Delicious food and coffee. You don't need to wait to be seated at this restaurant, just find your seat and the waiters will come to you.
We ordered the oat latte and oat cappuccino, they were both evidently better than most (highly rated) cafes in Cardiff city centre. The oat cappuccino was more bitter than the oat latte so the latte was my preferred drink.
Milkwood breakfast & Breakfast bun - both dishes were delectable. They were cooked and seasoned well, not overly salty or bland. Personally, I really enjoyed their hash browns which were made of layers of thinly sliced potatoes. They were fried to a perfect crispiness on the outside. To our surprise, their black pudding tasted great, without the sickly taste like most breakfast restaurants.
Overall, the entire dining experience was delightful. The service was quick and friendly, the food lived up to my expectations and even better, the prices were a bargain!
Great value for money. Highly recommended.

Gorgeous brunch.
We'd booked but our booking hadn't been recorded - however they managed to find a table for us.
Loved the food and service, only criticism is the judgement I felt when using the toilet facilities about how much loo roll I need. 😅

Lovely cafe in the heart of Pontcanna. Tasty food and very reasonable prices. Great for get together with friends. Modern, fresh decor.

Delicious Brunch with lots of veggie options. Hash browns are sooo good!! Cant wait to return.

Probably the best brunch I've had in Cardiff. The breakfast bun was incredible, loved the cockles, bacon and laver bread too.
The house white tasted great and the service was super friendly.
Can't wait to return

Best breakfast we've had in Cardiff. By a long way.
Update: Been here a couple of more times. Sadly service quality not up to par. Were turned away on Sunday and saw others just forcing themselves onto a table and being given a menu. Next morning, while food was still good, service was inattentive. It should not take 5 minutes of trying to catch a waiter's attention when they pass your table 10 times in that period.

The place has a wonderful atmosphere and the food was delicious. We tried the Korean chicken burger and the vegan Onion baji breakfast bun. The reason for the 4 star rating is that the latter portion is too small and therefore not satisfying. I recommend either reducing the price point for this dish or increasing it to incorporate chips or salad. Alternatively, the filling could be bigger. Despite that, I'd happily go again and order the chicken burger. Genuinely delicious, filling and ultimately satisfying.

Got them to make me a Full Welsh Breakfast (bacon, sausage, egg, cockles, lavabread) Was utterly awesome. I hope they actually add this onto their menu because as far as I can tell nowhere in Cardiff does it anymore. Would highly recommend going there.
E. L.
Absolutely beautiful place. The food and the service were excellent. 100% will visit again.

Had the buttermilk chicken waffles with maple syrup. Was lovely. Liked the vibe. Not too fussy. Coffee was good and they had full fat milk, which others don't always bother with.
R.
The staff are super friendly and really accommodating but the was food kind of a let down. We ordered the bacon, lavabread and cockles but it was so soggy that the bread it was served on was just wet. I was super excited to see this on a menu as it’s pretty rare to see but yeah was quite disappointed. My drink of iced tea was pretty bland as-well. The skinny chips was nice. It’s quite pricey for what you get. This is just my opinion though, I can see the place was popular so worth checking out!
C. P.
The buttermilk fried chicken is a must. Perfect brunch vibe.
E. B.
Absolutely incredible food. Great selection of light bites and larger meals all at amazing prices. Good coffee and lovely interior ☕
S. D.
Great, fresh food and good coffee (at busier times coffee quality drops but the nice atmosphere and kind staff make up for it). My go-to place for brunch. Make sure you book
J. E.
Really tasty food, excellent quality and good service

Popped by for brunch on a Saturday morning. Food was amazing (particularly the hash browns!!!), coffee was great, and service was fantastic. Would highly recommend.

It's cliche but 5 stars really doesn't do Milkwood justice.
Outstanding food made with locally sourced ingredients.
The staff absolutely nailed the hospitality touch. Just enough that if we were to want for anything they are there but not overbearing.
And then to top it all off their little garden out the back was quaint and comfortable. It felt like we were sat in a friends garden having breakfast.
Thank you Milkwood ❤️
H. B.
Lovely cafe - excellent coffee and brunch, reasonably priced with nice ambiance

Went yesterday, brunch was excellent very tasty and good portions. Coffee is also good!. Nice local cafe serving delicious food with a variety of options. Highly recomended
S. B.
The food here is fantastic, the staff are friendly, really nice atmosphere. The only problem is trying to get a table, as everyone in Cardiff have realised how good this place is.

Here on holiday we were so pleased to get to try Milkwood. It was the perfect quiet, relaxing dinner we were looking for away from the hustle and bustle of downtown.
We were able to enjoy multiple things on the menu on their outdoor tables which also made for good people watching. I loved the small plates concept so we didn’t feel locked in to any one or two dishes; while everything was fab, our favorites were the ox cheek donut, chicken thighs, and pork collar (I could have eaten the pickled veg all night).
Service was impeccable and a huge thank you to the staff who kept shuffling back and forth to the kitchen as we ordered more and more...and more. It’s that good, and unique; gems like this don’t come along often, I’m only disappointed we didn’t leave room for dessert.
D. H.
Had a lovely lunch that was very reasonably priced. The beans and peas on the trout dish were particularly tasty. Good service and wine too.
H. B.
Milkwood is a comparatively new place in Pontcanna, the restaurant has a very nice, relaxed environment, it is a bit like sitting in someone's front room.
As we sat down we were given a dark rind seed bread and salted butter - the bread was crunchy and tasty, and the butter actually had grains of salt on it. Very nice.
Once we had ordered, some hard decisions to make, our Amuse Boche was Ratte potato, horseradish and smoked trout - the crunch of the potato worked well with the softness of the trout, yum.
For starters I opted for clams and squid a la plancha (it was that or the Pig's Head croquette). The seafood was cooked in a light garlic butter and served with a slice of crunchy toast, really excellent.
My partner surprised me by choosing 50 day aged beef dripping, anchovy on sourdough toast - I didn't know he knew what dripping was, let alone that he would eat it. He says it was a perfect size and was very salty and tasty, just as he likes it.
My partner then opted for the Roast skate wing, caper butter, ratte potato and asparagus. The skate was soft and juicy, a lightly flavoured fish which benefited from the salty capers. The potatoes were al dente, just as he likes them, and the asparagus perfectly cooked.
I went with the stuffed saddle of rabbit, sausage roll, peas & gem lettuce with carrot cream and pickled walnut puree. The rabbit was lightly flavoured with the distinctive taste of rabbit very evident. The saddle rested on a bed of peas and gem lettuce which complemented the meat very well. The pickled walnut puree was a thing of beauty - sharp and tangy, perhaps more tangy than the rabbit could cope with, but lovely in its own right.
We ordered a side of roast hispi cabbage with hazelnuts - the pickled walnut puree went extremely well with this tasty cabbage.
For dessert my partner had warm treacle tart, creme fraiche, candied walnuts - He describes it as sugary good and would come back again just for this.
I had the cheese board with Montgomery cheddar, Driftwood goats’ cheese and Barkham blue - the walnut puree went well with the cheeses, and each cheese was strong and distinctive, served perfectly at room temperature, something some restaurants get wrong.
We finished with double expressos, very content – we’ll be back.
J. W.
Fantastic restaurant, meal was amazing, superb wine list and impeccable and friendly service and very reasonable.
We skipped starters, which I'm now regretting but there will be a next time, and went straight to the mains. I had the brace of quail and my wife had the lamb which were both delicious. We followed this with the chocolate mousse and chocolate and almond torte which were excellent.
We drank the Guy Allion Pinot Noir which was light and smooth so a perfect accompaniment to the meal.
We will definitely be returning to Milkwood
G. O.
The food is delicious, simple and perfectly cooked/prepared. And make sense!
Small but spacious restaurant. Service was good, too. Prices are normal but let me tell you; it makes you feel you want to pay more!
Well done. Love to go back again!
O. M.
Came for my birthday with my boyfriend after having a very disappointing meal in Heaneys. Needless to say I should have listened to the locals and just booked milkwood! It was excellent. Service was attentive and food was excellent.
T. P.
I have been to Millkwood on numerous occasions for Lunch and I can honestly say that the food and service is always excellent. I would highly recommend anyone to visit this vibrant eatery.
B. D.
Popular place in pontcanna, always busy but wasn’t hard to find a seat once we got here. Only downside is they don’t have a booking system that works at the moment and they don’t answer the phone. So it’s more a first come first serve
L. B.
Incredible place. Really warm & welcoming atmosphere, they made my partner and I feel extremely comfortable. The food was to die for.
E. R.
The BEST food!
Great, friendly staff!
Would highly recommend! Milkwood has become my new local!
A. C.
Best breakfast I’ve had in some time. Nice relaxed atmosphere, great staff.
P. B.
Great breakfast - looking forward to try more options off the menu.
D. F.
Amazing food. Lovely waitress and sharp owner. Very welcoming to us on our visit from Australia. The clam and squid starter was the highlight for me. Oh, did I mention the wine.
G. T.
This place is Awesome, i had the Huevos Rancheros for Breakfast and i can honestly say it's the nicest Breakfast I've ever had. Upstairs deco is cool too. Worth a visit, not sure how we managed to get a table at 11ish on a Sunday but I'm glad we did. 5 star staff too 😉
M. F.
Great food made by excellent people. Their recent transformation from local gastrohub to brunch bar is complete and I hope they never go back. Excellent coffee and hearty, generous meals with top shelf ingredients. Stop reading this and go there NOW!
R. M.
It was such a treat to be able to enjoy some delicious recipes. We were a group of 5 and managed to order most of the small plates on the menu. All prepared with the freshest ingredients and tasted amazing. Will definitely come back once lock down allows us to sit inside again.
R. L.
Enjoyed the laverbread on toast, great coffee (never say that lightly) pleasant staff. Definitely be returning.
R. K.
Great place, small with amazing food that is unique with incredible flavors. Staff is equally outstanding.
J.
Friendly staff, really well considered and nicely tasting breakfast. Excellent coffee. Team happy to do something slightly off menu and happy with substitutions. Will be visiting again.
D. S.
Just popped in for lunch on a Saturday. Nice decorated with a very cool bar set up and friendly welcoming laid-back staff. We had 2 drinks (1 alcoholic and one non alcoholic), a pizza, the ribs and the 3 cheese croquettes. We were both well fed and it all came to under £30- cheaper than we ever spend on a takeaway! Very enjoyable food and a comfortable environment. Will definitely be back!
s. c.
Yummy food ... good atmosphere ... lively staff.
A. O.
Good food, good coffee, good service.

Excellent food for brunch with warm and friendly service

Had a great brunch here on a Saturday afternoon. Will definitely go back there again. Staff were friendly and helpful and the food was excellent.
R. M.
Lovely staff, bubbly atmosphere, delicious food and dog friendly... What more could anyone ask for?
R. C.
Great food and service, we had brunch best hashbrowns ever!!
J. H.
Absolutely stunning breakfast. The chicken and waffles were so tasty, the coffee was brilliant and the whole vibe is very chilled.
A. P.
Contender for best restaurant in Cardiff, certainly!
A real 'hidden gem' - food, atmosphere, service all of the highest order, all delivered in an informal feeling but top quality venue.
Hardest to believe, while the menu is nudging Michelin creativity and quality...the decent portions are all served at down to earth prices. There's some magic afoot here...
Can't get enough!
K. B.
Lovely space for coffee, tea and delicious things to eat.
D. P.
Best meal we've had in Cardiff! Top class fine dining experience in a genuinely local, relaxed and friendly environment. Food was faultless and front of house staff excellent. Prices also very reasonable, especially taking quality of the cooking into account. Will be recommending to everyone and will be returning to sample the menu as it changes throughout the year.
A. C.
Excellent breakfast at a fair price.
Both the full English and breakfast bun were cooked well with high quality ingredients.
C. M.
Gorgeous coffee, good service and the food was just perfect. The breakfast bun and pancakes were to die for, definitely worth a visit 🙏🏽
A. K.
My daughter treated me to lunch here today.. my first time but defffinetly not my last...such lovely friendly staff...awesome menu...Good prices...I had a vegan burger just because it sounded so tasty and I wasn't disappointed...it was delicious 😋
Highly recommend popping here...
J. M.
Lovely food with good friendly service.
Had the bacon, cockles, larvabread on toast which was delicious.
L. G.
Delightful restaurant. Great atmosphere even on a Tuesday night. Interesting seasonal menu. I had a duck main course which was delicious. The staff were friendly and attentive. For the quality of the food I think the prices were reasonable at around £15-18 for a main. Would highly recommend and I fully intend on returning.
W. M.
Very impressed. Small so you'll need to book, especially weekends. Food was fantastic with well matched wines. The interaction from Andrew (Front of house) made it a true dinning experience. Probably the best restaurant in Cardiff.
M. D.
Milkwood was fantastic. The food was delicious, the wine menu excellent and the service was lovely. I recommend you go for things you wouldn't normally have but still enjoy, as the flavours they produce are outstanding. Milkwood is definitely not cheap but just justifies the price tag.
J. K.
Delicious food! The Jerusalem artichoke chips were so yummy! I would definitely recommend the duck ragu pasta - the ragu was so tender, whilst you could tell the pasta was homemade. Staff were lovely too. The only reason I’m not giving 5/5 is as someone who loves desserts is that I was a bit disappointed by these. They taste nice but I just think they lack a bit of creativity and also the portion sizes were very small.
l. s.
Super busy on a Saturday morning, staff are really friendly and work SUPER HARD to give everyone lovely experience. Food and coffee are delicious! Highly recommend 👌
E. J.
A limited menu that changes regularly depending on what's in season and good. Excellent quality ingredients and flavours, outstanding service. We paid £100 for 2 people - 3 courses, a good bottle of wine and a dessert wine. It's small and cosy so make sure you book.
E. S.
The restaurant itself is nothing special but the food definitely is. Ox cheek to die for and the best kedgeree my husband has ever tasted. The rack of lamb and the confit duck were both beautifully cooked and accompanied by interesting veg, and the glass of red wine we had (la Native?) was terrific and well priced. Service was friendly and attentive and the patron rang a day before to confirm our online booking which was a nice touch. All in all, the best meal we've had in ages - Milkwood is well worth a special visit.
D. L.
Visited for lunch in 2017 and everything was just awesome. Great friendly service, food was fresh and delicious (maybe a bit quirky for some - beetroot soup-like amuse bouche), everything else was clean and simple.
It may feel a bit pretentious to some but if you like your food it's a must to try.
J. R.
Gary fresh food. Wonderful service. Book ahead!

We booked this new place in Pontcanna to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday, we knew the background of the folks running the place (coming from the Potted Pig and Porros) and had heard positive recommendations.
And we weren't disappointed. The whole experience was fabulous. Gracious hosting and service, tasteful surroundings, stunning high cuisine food (though the menu is quite limited, but everything wad amazing did that didn't matter) and good wine selections. They even serve large bottles of Pipes pale ale too.
Almost all of us opted for the duck breast, with a carrot puree, chard amd fondant potato, which was simply beautiful. Incredible flavours. I finished with a lovely Gin and Lemon sorbet... just perfect!
Well done all at Milkwood, we'll be back soon...
p.
Lovely dinner for two, I had cod cheeks to start and my wife had sexy beef on toast. Both were really good and plentiful for an entrée. I had a ribeye and my wife had grey mullet with a laverbread and cockle sauce, again cooked to perfection. The restaurant is cosy but has a nice bistro feel with friendly staff. We had just come back from the south of France and Milkwood is easily up to the standard of the bistros we ate in there.
P. D.
fantastic gem of a bistro - the chips with oxtail ragu are a meal in itself and worth the visit in themselves. Tom and his staff have got the menu spot on - support not just of covid but because milkwood is fantastic 👌👍
S.
Best meal I've had in ages, definitely best meal to be had in Cardiff. Flawless food, esp the sweetbread, which it was so exciting to see on a menu around here. Warm, friendly staff. Cannot wait to return.
J. D.
Wow ! Really, all the enthusiastic and superlative reviews are fully deserved : the food is superb (varied, inventive, with great flavours nicely revealed by the preparation and assembled in your plate) and the people are fantastic. Plus a great atmosphere.
E. N.
Friendly service and tasty dishes makes Milkwood stand out amongst competitors. The execution of the food was of a high standard with a French flair: These are not dishes you can easily rustle up at home.
They serve seasonal dishes with an ever changing menu and everything we tried was spot on. Definitely going to have the Bute salad side dish again. Worth the price tag!
S. S.
Very happy indeed to give Milkwood a five star rating. The food and service alone are worthy of five stars, but the addition of wall art by local artists is worthy of note too, displaying quality pieces of art and supporting local artists is worthy of praise.
The food, as previously mentioned was worthy of five stars, local produce providing the ingredients and although the menu is short, there is something for everyone. Another fabulous night out in Cardiff.
I. D.
Our son took us here for lunch and we were highly impressed with the food and the welcoming and friendly staff. Therefore, good food using local produce (Wye Valley asparagus for example) and excellent wine- the South African Sauvignon Blanc highly recommended. Looking forward to our repeat visit.
G. S.
If you are looking for amazing food, just come here. Everything tastes incredibly good, starting from the complementary butter and bread served while waiting for the order.
Tried the panfried chicken and pappardelle al ragù - both really tasteful and perfectly balanced.
Cosy atmosphere and kind personnel as well.
I will certainly come back.
J. J.
Fantastic breakfast and lovely service.
A. W.
Wonderful hospitality, food and vibe. Seasonal and local menu with a nice wine list. Loved the squid a la plancha, duck breast and cheese plate. Highly recommended for a date or nice dinner with colleagues.
M. P.
Great food, great service, great time!

Had the fantastic Cubano on Saturday night. It's almost too good to put into words. Such a shame we can't visit the restaurant for the full experience.
E.
Went to Milkwood for a light Sunday lunch, really nice atmosphere, very friendly staff and lovely food. Thoroughly recommend.
P. B.
My wife and I treated ourselves to three courses here. We had the ox cheek to start. I’m no Jay Rayner so I don’t think I can do it justice - it was rich, unctuous and melted in the mouth. Superb and a dish that makes you smile at each other. My wife had the chicken for main whilst I had the pork chop. Both wonderful with a good chunky pork chop that was succulent. We both had the Mille-feuille. Stunning. The ice cream that came with it was a cool, smooth flavour bomb and the pastry flaky with a lovely bite. I had a lovely glass of crisp Sancerre and a bottle of primitivo which was soft and jammy. Service was attentive and very friendly. A bloody good dinner.
G. J.
great for brunch and lunch, so good that I've try all the dishes already! 😋😋
L. T.

Great service amazing cuisine and far better than I was expecting. Interesting and unusual but not experimental. Excellent portions. Will be back as soon as possible. Thanks Andy
S. S.
An unassuming menu and place that surprises you with some of the best food you'll have tasted. The three course lunch menu and glass of wine is an absolute bargain for what is an incredibly luxurious 2 hours of deliciousness.

(Translated) We visited our daughter in Cardiff and looked for a good restaurant for a birthday dinner. The reviews on the Internet made us curious ... We were not disappointed! The Milkwood is an exceptionally good restaurant, with ambitious chefs who produce delicious, unusual and also visually very appealing creations. The service is extremely warm and attentive. The menu is not very large, but our daughter, who is a vegetarian, was also able to find something on it. Make sure you also have your appetite for dessert! The slightly higher prices are definitely justified. We had a wonderful evening! Thanks to the entire team!
