We brought meat eaters to this very tasty place for veggies and vegans, they loved it too. Classy and welcoming atmosphere. Toilets very clean and appropriate for the standard of food. Banging food. Appropriate takeaway materials that were recyclable. Better biodegradable materials needed.

One of Cardiff’s best indian restaurants, the food was really tasty and well presented. We were a large party and everyone enjoyed thier meals. Extensive menu with plenty of veggie options. The new contemporary interior brings a nice ambience to the space.

First time visiting this venue. A friends birthday celebration. Fantastic customer service, amazing food, I will definitely be back.
J. T.
Best curry I have ever had. Great service. Original menu. Worth going to. Will definitely return.
S. K.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Phenomenal vegetarian choice.
Food was full of flavour, the paneer was so fresh and soft.
Definitely will be visiting again.

Brilliant food, well worth it. Be careful of the service charge though!

My expectations were quite high for last night (12/02/2022) But, we were disappointed by such a highly recommended and raved reviewed restaurant. Upon arrival, the table we had booked a while back in January, we had to wait several minutes to be seated at... The starter was delicious and probably the best part of the whole meal. Overall... Not very impressed at all. I have given it three stars, only because there was a large contingency of rugby fans in that evening and the staff were running at maximum capacity, but coped with the fully seated restaurant reasonably well!!! My Lamb Rogon Josh was bland to say the least. I was given the menu to order desert, but never got to order the desert. Overpriced for what it was. Would I return? Nope!!!
G. R.
Lovely attentive and extremely helpful staff. Lovely setting behind an easily miss-able single doorway in Canton. The food is out of this World however, everything balanced perfectly and all sauces/accompaniments so complementary. Thank you - we will definitely be back....there's more menu to try 😁
A. T.
Superb. Start to finish great service, delicious well presented dishes. Amazing value.
S. C.
A lovely restaurant above the high Street. The staff were very attentive and the food was delicious, everything look amazing and tasted even better. Not just the usual Indian, but a bit more up market, would highly recommend if you visit cardiff.

Please open a restaurant in Bath or Bristol!!! 😍 I came to Cardiff for a girls trip, the shops disappointed but the absolute highlight was for sure discovering Purple Poppadom and ordering it to the hotel room! The best Indian I’ve had, created by chefs who care about their dishes and create works of art. Non- greasy, flavours electric and portion size was 10/10! Please open more restaurants !!! 🙏🏼
J. B.
Is the food here fantastic? 100%. Does it look great? 100%. I have been here a number of times and loved it. However, after the new re-do of the restaurant I feel like the vibe has changed. I felt like I was constantly being upsold to order more than we needed to, order more expensive items and buy things we didn’t need. It made for quite an awkward and uncomfortable experience and I hope they tone it back in the future. Ps- I work in hospitality, I know everyone needs to make some £££ but this was too awkward.
S. H.
By far the best authentic tasty Indian food in South Wales for many years now. Recent refurbishment has been well done ., The new menu maintains the expected high standards Anand George has set .
Soft shell crab remains my favourite starter of all time .
M. T.
Amazing meal and great atmosphere, proper Indian food like you've never had!! Try the soft shell crab

Have made the trip to Cardiff twice now specifically for a meal at the Purple Poppadom, and will definitely be coming back again. The Murgh Lambabar is👌
J. R.
Fantastic food & service. The food here is a cut above the standard Indian fare with generous portions and tasty, unique dishes. The mint & coriander sorbet served with my chicken dish was new to me and delicious. The restaurant is spotless, the service faultless. Prices are fair. We had 1 starter (Onion Palak Pakoda big enough to share) 2 mains (Vegetarian Platter, Nawabi Chicken), poppadoms, naan, pilau rice, 3 Kingfisher beer a bottle of sparkling water. The bill, including a discretionary service charge was £76. We will definitely be eating here again.
P. H.
Absolutely stunning food. Friendly service. Nice decor.
F. B.
Me and my boyfriend got takeaway from here to celebrate an achievement at my job. We were honestly blown away, everything was incredible and very generously sized. It is no doubt quite expensive when compared to other Indian restaurants but it is absolutely reflected in the quality of the food. Perfect for a takeaway that was for a more special occasion. I haven’t eaten in the restaurant itself but I definitely will in the future :)

Unusual menu for an Indian restaurant lovely place, clean and nicely decorated..toilets are very clean, I had the biriani I didn't like it, very fragranced, looked lovely but I'd rather the usual bug standard Indian I'm used too
J. G.
First time visiting PP, on New Year's Eve. We weren't disappointed, the tasting menu was fantastic, atmosphere and service fabulous. It was lovely to see the restaurant very busy but that didn't impact on the service or food standard we experienced. Definitely will be returning.
M.
The food was absolutely amazing. I would highly recommend the samosa to start, this was my favourite part of the meal. I then shared the vegetarian platter (all lovely) and the sea bass classic. It was all incredible and I will 100% be going back. Worth the price and really great service.
A. M.
Booked a meal late in the day and rocked up knowing nothing about the restaurant. Once we found it (more later), it turned out to be a gem of a place. Very helpful staff who took time to explain each meal, good selection of dishes, and the food was excellent.
Handy carpark on the next street over with access via a lane to the pedestrian crossing beside the restaurant. Only issue for others could be access - the restaurant is up a flight of stairs - no lift that I could see. It also took us a few minutes to find it as the only indication of where it was was the sign above the doorway. We were looking at the bigger shop fronts and walked past it twice...
D.
Food was excellent, only slightly let down by slow & sometimes confused service.
Photo is of their Lamb Biryani + side order of Lamb Nan. Traditional, but more unusually in UK, their Biryani is cooked in an individual metal dish with edible thin pastry lid to keep all the moisture in, such that they don't by default provide any sauce (although you can order a Dhal side IF you want) instead the dish comes with yogurt.
Be aware most people round the table found their dishes medium to hot, so you may need to ask if you prefer your dishes milder.
N. H.
Fantastic experience on a long weekend visiting Cardiff. The exterior is very understated, but venture upstairs to a smart and stylish restaurant.
The staff were very warm and friendly. The service was extremely fast. The menu has a great selection of interesting things and all the food we ordered was delicious especially the onion pakodas.
M. K.
Really loved the food I am vegan so ordered only vegetarian food but it was really nice as compared to my yesterday's experience from other restaurant. Recommend others and I'll surely order again from here. Finally happy with the food quality and taste after coming to cardiff.
P. H.
The starter was great, the main was great and the dessert finished the meal off perfectly. Very much recommend paying this place a visit. Only issue was the lack of not alcoholic drink options, as a non drinker Coke and juice can be a bit repetitive.
D. M.
Excellent food, as ever. A safe, relaxed environment, with impeccable service.
N. T.
Wonderful meal in their newly decorated restaurant, menu a little reduced from pre covid but still top quality food. Service remains top notch.
M. B.
Great food. Will be back for sure.
Marsala tea - amazing.
S. F.
Fantastic meal and a great experience all round. Will definitely be going back.
C. H.
Absolutely stunning food, fragrant and tasty. Portion size was spot on and staff attentive and knowledgeable about the food. Love this place ❤
G. W.
Stunning. Food is very tasty and to a high standard and good quality. Plenty of it. Chutney with Poppadom is fantastic. We've tried different dishes. The Tiffin ones are great. Can't wait to sample more. Highly recommended.
b. A. B.
10 of us fed there tonight: we all enjoyed ourselves. Thanks
T. G.
Excellent food in a lovely intimate but lively setting. The crab and the streets of Mumbai were particularly delicious.
S. S.
The best indian food I have ever tasted, attention to detail for the food and service. Don't waste your time anywhere else!
D. Q.
Ordered a takeaway last night, Prawn tiffin box, pakora, Lamb rogan josh, peshwari naan and pilau rice, arrived within 20 minutes of ordering, the Lamb rogan josh was the best I've ever tasted. This place is next level amazing.
S. R.
We have eaten at Purple Poppadom before and loved it. During lockdown they are of course only able to do takeaway which we tried last night and were not disappointed. From the first mouthful it was clear this was not just another Indian takeaway: absolutely delicious food, and with 20% discount for collection, not too expensive. Very good portion sizes too: lunch today is sorted as well!
S. O.
We tried the 7 course tasking menu and it was excellent. Each course was quite small but overall more than sufficient!
The waiter explained each dish as it arrived and was very helpful. There's even a matching wine selection for each course but I was driving so didn't indulge.
Highly recommended.
S. D.
Stunningly good, well presented and original food. Chef gives classes too! A wonderful meal at a reasonable price. We will be back!
I. T.
Curry to die for should have an award for decor its amazing
F. R.
Was debating giving this place a 4 star review but settled on a fat 5. Here is why.
The food is excellent and I had a taster meal option. It was all presented beautifully and very tasty. Starts with some venison naan which is to die for. There was an odd Chinese tasting pork belly dish that was nice however felt out of place. The main dish was prawn curry which wasn't the best however that's more to personal taste preferences as prawns are low on my list of curry meats. If the main was a lamb or beef dish, this would have e easily been a 5.
The staff are excellent. Really attentive and have a relaxed sense of humour which is normally missing from such Hugh rated places. They checked if we had any allergies before hand and then served promptly and ensured we were always well refreshed with wine.
The actual restaurant is small and cosey, allowing you to have private conversations and your own space but also not feeling like a battery hen waiting to be fed.
All in all a great restaurant that I would happily visit again. Highly recommended.
A. L. F.
Have the lamb shank absolutely amazing
L. w.
Fabulous food, impeccable service will I go back? Ooh yes
C. S.
One of the nicest meals I've had and the service was brilliant. I went with 4 friends and one of them suggested it. Glad he did. Next time I'm visiting Cardiff I'll definitely be going here again. You could easily miss it from outside so keep an eye out.
J. G.
Nice location in Canton, Cardiff. Handy parking nearby if arriving after 6pm. Good hosts. Attentive staff and nice selection of food. Reasonable prices. Would happily go back to try some other options.
C. L.
I found the food excellent. The quality of the meat and the taste of the sauces were great. Definitely be having a takeaway from there again
K. H.
Great food a cut above your normal curry house.
G. S.
Lovely food and super helpful staff. Really knowledgeable about the food and helped me to pick out some vegan dishes. The pakora was my absolute favourite. Been back for takeaway since.
C. E.
What a fabulous evening! I have never had Indian food like it. Even though we were in a big party we were looked after exceptionally well. The waiter came to explain every dish to us and the food was out of this world. My particular favourite was the Chocomosa pudding. To die for!!! Really, really fabulous, cannot recommend it highly enough!
M. L.
We really enjoyed our meal, Indian flavours but with some really clever twists. And everything was cooked perfectly, we really couldn't fault it. I would recommend the tasting menu as it gives you a real showcase of the chefs talents
C. C.
Go for the crab to start and the sea bass for main it’s out of this world 👌
D. C.
We did the taster menu. The food was lovely but expensive. It's the first time I've ever been to a restaurant and they didn't have a house red. My partner wasn't so impressed, she felt a bit like a battery hen - they do pack you in. I'd go back for the food but she wouldn't. It's worth it for the experience, everybody needs to go once.
P. F.
Excellent Indian food and good service. The Purple Poppadom is one of two Indian restaurants which vie for the title of best Indian restaurant in Cardiff. The food is wonderfully tasty and well presented in a pleasant atmosphere. Be prepared to pay more than most people would expect for Indian food, but it is worth it.
M. H.
We had the best four course meal with tasting wines too. Loved every course and the New Zealand wines. Thank you Purple Poppadom for a fantastic evening.
D. H.
We had the Christmas tasting menu. I have eaten a lot of curry in my time and nothing compares to this. What could have been normal restaurant food was just elevated to something else. A little chaat starter with filling, marinaded tandoori chicken, lovely tasty breads, Kerala chicken, lamb and a chocolate samosa with ice cream to finish. So very, very good. Probably the best restaurant in Cardiff in my opinion. The staff were lovely and helpful.
A. G.
Absolutely exceptional food. I often eat at the Red Fort on Dean Street - multi award winning and excellent restaurant - but this is even better. The salmon starter is beyond compare. The subtlety of the taste... And I defy anyone to cook a better lamb shank main course than the Raan Akbari. The mint sorbet and the squash mash complemented it perfectly. The chef and owner was charming and showed us the kitchen, the tandoori oven - and introduced us to his inspired colleagues. So friendly and unassuming.
Whatever the price find a way of eating here. This isn't just a posh Indian restaurant. It's simply superb food that transcends ethnicity.
L. T.
Had a takeaway from Purple Poppadum this evening - Absolutely gorgeous food - Ordering online was so easy and collection was speedy and felt safe. Definitely recommend.
m. m.
My wife and I went for a meal to celebrate our first anniversary....I have to say the experience was one of the best meals we have had ever!...we went for the 7 course tasting menu along with paired wines....the food was absolutely fantastic and the wine pairings were quite appropriate...the service was prompt, attentive yet unobstrusive...I would definitely recommend this place for people who would like to see Indian cuisine in a more refined light, yet maintaining all the flavours and spices....Saag Chicken was my favourite...reminded me of my mum's cooking...overall a fabulous experience....I would definitely visit again...some quick feedback on two aspects - 1) multiple course meals along with paired wines should state if the total quantity of wine served during the meals is above permissible driving limit or not? 2) The decor can be improved a bit...there is a lovely large wall on one side of the restaurant that is not used at all...just to brighten up the place..
A. M.
Went with a friend for a girls night out. Really excellent food, we had two courses and everything was beautifully made. The staff were lovely. A great night out and we will be returning!
c. b.
creative, imaginative fusion of Indian and Welsh flavours. my onion intolerance was no problem for them. got the chef to autograph his cook book for us and even posed for a photo. highly recommended
F. C.
Lovely food, tasty and fresh. We had murgh makhani and joghan rosh as mains, pakoras and prawns as starters. It was our third visit in 6 weeks, and plan to go back again soon!
P. C.
Incredible food and great service. Very authentic but also has the richness and depth to curries. Some unique dishes but an overall very good standard curry eatery! Also equally great take away.
s. b.
Food was excellent but the place is very cramped
E. N.
It was an amazing evening with my family and relatives. Everything on the menu was creative. The taste was unique and full of flavour. I enjoyed almost all of the meals and deserts. It was a great time :)
P. G.
Good welcome with an extensive menu.It is the first time that I had an Indian of this quality.I will certainly going back.Thanks.
R. A.
Delicious Indian cuisine.
Not big portions but very tasty.
The best Indian restaurant in Cardiff.
Excellent service and friendly staff.
M. B.
Food was good however the service was slow but staff were really friendly- it was a set menu and maybe that's why but we was waiting ages inbetween courses.
The dessert was gorgeous, white chocolate mousse
a. a.
Very good authentic Indian food... would highly recommend the chicken lababdar, prawns biryani and butter garlic naan
L. V.
If your looking for vindaloo this is not the place. What it does have is a delicious menu featuring Indian/Welsh fusion food. A dietary requirement was handled very professionally with no noticeable drop in quality. Very impressive.
A. M.
Beautiful food and excellent service. I had the creamery starter and my wife had the chicken starter, then I had lamb, which fell off the bone, and my wife had the chicken with a stunning sauce. Different, and highly recommended.
a. k.
Lovely quality food from here. I would call it fine dinning. Chef Anand George is amazing, dishes always come out great! Couldnt recomend more. Do book before going. They are busy for a reason!
J. D.
Delicious takeaway- had a vegetarian paneer dish with rice and peshwari naan. Full of flavour would recommend
S. M.
My partner bit upon a very large piece of bone in the beef curry. Not dealt with well at all. No apology. Eventually a £10 reduction in bill. Starters lovely. Main quite bland. Won't rush back
n. s.
Lovely place to visit for a date or with friends and family. The food was very nice. Clean linen on the tables. No hassle to order or even to leave. Reasonably priced.
S. C.
Food was ok though expensive (not sure about value for money) and didn't feel menu offered much choice. Took a long time for food to arrive on a pre booking, admittedly on a Saturday night - seemingly kept waiting to buy more drinks. Overall experience 3 stars.
S. M.
Nice food, good atmosphere. Had the 7 course taster menu and it was delicious. However, it is a little expensive but not your normal Indian!
N. J. H.
Very honestly.. the best Indian food I have ever had. Not your typical curry for sure.. it will have a star soon.. so go now.. it's not the cheapest but is certainly fantastic.
P. R.
Excellent food and service for party of ten
K. C.
Amazing food. Filling, fresh and a delight for your taste buds.
J. C.
Ordered a curry on delivdroo. The food was amazing. Will definitely order again next time we visit folks back home.
A. D.
Nice place to eat out. The ambiance is very much upmarket Indian and the staff is very helpful. The only upside is it's on the first floor and has no disabled access.
S. M.
Clean and food was nice pipping hot
V. S.
Just had the takeaway veggie set meal. Really delicious, and very generous for two people, probably enough for 3!
T. E.
I will come here every time I visit Cardiff. Do yourself a favour and go. High level Indian cuisine and beautifully presented. Rather unique.
A. J.
The best indian cuisine restaurant you can find in cardiff don't give a second thought try it you will love it...
J. R.
Truly fantastic food and excellent service. Couldn’t fault a single calorie 😊
J. C.
Exceptional food on the 7 course taster menu. Slight delay between courses but nice helpful and attentive staff. Best Indian food in Wales.
P. S.
Excellent formal restaurant that happens to serve Indian food, or rather a modern, creative interpretation of that. Very pleasant atmosphere, good service and a memorable food experience.
T. K.
Excellent modern Indian cuisine! Soft shelled crab a MUST! (Though only as part of a starter 'crab' trio) .... Apparently if you pre order they will arrange as much SSC as you want.... Nom Nom Nom!
J. C.
Interesting concept of putting traditional westernised curry dishes in a Frock and charging more for them. Tasty? Definitely. Worth the money? No way.
R. G.
One of the best meals i have ever had, i can only say good things, George is an amazing chef, i certainly will return, definately 5 star!
H. R.
Lovely food. A little more expensive than usual Indian restaurant food .. lost a star a not accessible to anyone with mobility problems and definitely not anyone using a wheelchair.
B. I.
Nice ambience, peaceful place n scrumptious food and great hospitatlity. We had a great "Aanandful" time at purple popadom.
J. H.
Amazing food, friendly staff.
T. J.
Food is excellent if rather on the sweet side. The portion sizes are rather small and the prices high. It's also located in what might be described as an unyuppyfied area.
B. R.
Some of the best Indian food we have ever had. Very smart balance of flavours and great service!
J. L.
Overpriced curry house! Trying to be special but the curries are not that special. No substance to the sauces and definitely 50% more than a decent curry house.
F. B.
A unique Indian dining experience. Innovative and flavoursome. Not your average curry house.
M. G.
Eating here now and the food is so good I need to rate it immediately. Best Indian cuisine I’ve ever had.
R. M.
Chefs veggie tasting menu wasn't on the main menu but was amazing. Lots of variety and supremely filling and satisfying.
P. J.
Good food with great service
M. R.
Excellent indian cuisine. Efficient and friendly service. Not very spacious, but not cramped.
A. G.
Very nice presentation of food. Quantity bit low and price on the higher side. However nice atmosphere and staff with tasty food.
R. P.
Incredible food. A little more expensive than your standard Indian maybe, but we'll worth it.
S. S.
Best Indian restaurant in Wales and the South West by an enormous margin.
Like Kobe beef compared to a Big Mac
D. M.
Pre-match meal with a group. The place was full and everyone was eating at the same time. So it was a surprise to find friendly fast service and great food.

Easy to miss this restaurant as it is just a door leading to the restaurant above shops, but the food was amazing.
B. D.
Fairly small portions and not that great quality. Getting the staff's attention was not as easy as it should be.
J. S.
Best Indian I've ever had. Went in with 7 other lads and the service was bang on.
K. P.
The scallop and Hake starters were amazing. Mains were brilliant also. Great service and friendly.
J. E.
Wonderful food. But charge 10 per cent service charge. Very expensive.

Excellent food which was understandably expensive. Included a tip disguised as a 'service charge' for which I have docked 1 star.
