Always a winner coming to the Banquet. Excellent service ,great cocktails & food. Worth booking in advance if you want a sit down meal as it gets very busy or you can order a takeaway instead. Plenty of free parking and ideal for disabled access.

Outstanding Chinese, truly a hidden gem of Essex. One of the finest places for Peking Duck in the UK. Try the prawns in special fruity salad sauce - they’re a revelation! Everything is delicious and the staff are delightful. Fantastic value for money too.

We use the Banquet regularly. The service and friendliness of the staff is always excellent. Tonight the service was up to its high standard, but the food on this occasion (considering its on the expensive side) was very average and particularly the quarter of crispy duck ( not remotely çrispy and very small) plus the main courses were very disappointing. In fairness tonight was not typical, but just giving an honest review based on this evening where our bill was £103 for 2 people plus 10% for service which was well deserved.

We have been big fans of Banquet for around 7 years. Recently we had a problem with a dim sum take-away - the first time ever. Banquet managemen contacted us and assured us it was a one-off. They offered to make up for the experience. In our view, how restaurants deal with things when they go wrong is a good measure of them. We remain impressed by Banquet.

Came for a company night out in December 2022. We had a private room which was lovely, and nicely decorated for Christmas. The table shared the Hong Kong set menu and the Banquet set dinner, with excellent vegetation and vegan alternatives, and plenty of care taken regarding allergies. The food was excellent, plentiful and really delicious and I will defiantly be returning (hopefully with room to try the desert menu, as we were all too full after the meal this time).

Even with a reserved table we were left standing for 40 minutes before being seated. The truly excellent dim sum -- including black fungus, cuttlefish cakes & charcoal hot lava buns -- and faultless, attentive service at the table almost made up for this lapse, but not quite. Will go back again, but not at lunch time on a Sunday.

Went for the Beijing set meal for two and an additional dim sum starter, the food was ok as a package, some of the items in the set menu like hot/sour soup and sliced pork with cashews were mediocre at best and some others were of a good level of standard. Crispy duck and the egg fried rice were the standouts of everything we had and we enjoyed them. The restaurant was quite cold and we wasn't the only table saying it. Service was good from most of the staff even though one couldn't speak English. The gap we had between finishing our starter an main coming was about 30mins which is not a good benchmark. Atmosphere was good, everyone was eating and happy, restaurant was busy so that's good. May come here again and eat to try something else.

The Banquet is a delicious dim sum parlor with everything you'd want to satiate those Chinese food cravings. Inside, the interiors is made to look traditional Chinese. On a Saturday lunchtime, the restaurant was not too busy and we were able to find a table with no waiting time at all. Service was pretty quick and the food was delicious, arriving streaming hot as one would expect. I have no complaints whatsoever and, I can verify that The Banquet as a good choice for dim sum for the whole family and groups of friends to enjoy.

Very expensive but I don't think there was one thing I didn't like. The food was lovely except for maybe the Chinese pork which was pretty dried out to be honest but everything else I had was lovely. We had dimsum, Hong Kong set menu, 2 more set menus and some sides. Some of the staff seemed a little bothered or flustered but the guy was all smiles and very professional. They add a service charge on to your bill automatically and then ask for a gratuity on top which I don't really like the idea of. I'm all for tipping but it should be your choice how much and who gets it in my mind. I'll be back for more. Edit: I forgot to add that our bill was quite large £300+ and they forgot to add some bits on so the server brought the card machine and I entered my pin then she took the machine back entered another figure and tapped my card herself, didn't even explain or ask me to confirm or anything, just used my card as if it was her own. I would've paid anyway but I didn't feel comfortable with a waitress just using my payment method without my consent or even explaining what she was doing and why. Very unprofessional.

If you are looking for a Chinese restaurant that does Cantonese Dim Sum outside of London in Essex, this is it! Decent sized, quality dishes at a very reasonable prices. Factor in free parking, a comfortable relaxed environment and attentive staff - Definitely recommended!

Tastefully decorated with very good service from the waiters. Had Tim Sum with some family members and most of the dishes are tasty and served hot. Got a 30% discount for every Monday till Dec 2018. Very good value for money! Will be visiting again soon.

After my previous entry of a disappointing dim sum place; my family found ourselves in Colchester with a recommendation to Banquet Chinese as a ‘must go.’ We arrived and was welcomed by friendly staff and a restaurant that was bright, airy and comfortable. After being seated, we chose all our favourites for dim sum and waited in anticipation. The food did not disappoint and it was hard to find fault anywhere! Each mouthful was delicious and were accompanied with happy head nods after each bite. Check this out if you’re a dim sum fan! This would definitely become our regular Sunday eatery if we lived in the area!

Nice clean well laid out venue in the dining area and in the public areas including toilets. Staff are attentive, polite and knowledgeable on their menu choices. We had a banquet table for around 15 of us and were eating off the main menu, so were ordering lots of individual dishes for both starters and mains. Drink selection is good with a choice of beers, wines and spirits along with soft drink options. Food wise, they offer an amazing selection of dishes in both starter, banquet and main categories and all our food was cooked to perfection. My own order of chilli and pepper baby squid starter was fantastic and a good portion size as was the crispy beef and egg fried rice main. Everyone else was equally happy with their choices and portion size too. All in all a goodnight out with some spectacular food and best of all, someone else was paying.

Having been born in Hong Kong and coming from Chinese parentage, I've had a lifetime of experiencing Oriental food. The best Chinese restaurants used to be in Soho London, then my favourite restaurants were in Bristol. Banquet Chinese is now my favourite Chinese restaurant. I've not long moved into the Colchester area and for over thirty years have lived around different parts of Essex. It has taken until now for me to find a Chinese restaurant that I would happily regularly dine in, within the county. What a stroke of luck that I found Banquet. The authentic tasty food, the friendly service and the ambience are all top class and reasonably priced. I can recommend the Roast Duck, the Chinese BBQ Pork (Char Sui), the Crispy Roast Belly of Pork, the Beef in Black Bean with thick rice noodles (Ho Fun), the Hong Kong Sweet & Sour Pork and Dim Sum dishes. I will be a regular diner here and would recommend to anyone who is in search of a very good Chinese meal.

Evening meal this time. All very good...the highlight being the Morning Glory...even non vegetarians fighting over it Surprised by the quality of the Dim Sum. 6 adults all fed with lots of tea for under 80 quid 5 years ago we all walked out (paid for the drinks) due to still frozen inside food. A very easy drive along the A12, just 25 minutes from Chelmsford. Much better than battling thru the A13 to Yiban at the Royal Docks and then having to pay for parking!!! Food and service was good. There were twelve of us on a big round table. They would bring out a large platter of food and put it on the lazy Susan, eleven of us would then wait while one person served themselves and then moved the platter round. This was the case for the starters & duck courses. Incredibly frustrating and the meal didn't have the feeling of lots of little bits and pieces like I remember going for a Chinese. Food could have been broken down into three or four serving dishes. The main wasn't quite as bad as each dish had its own serving dish. Like I say, the food was excellent quality, the way it was served was really disappointing.

As a vegetarian, they had some decent options and a vegan only menu which made it a pleasant experience. The decor is lovely and the staff welcoming. It felt a little more expensive than it was worth but we enjoyed it overall. You can tell the food is fresh and it might sound weird to describe it this way, but it also tasted clean - not oily, not cooked in the same pan as something else from two minutes ago. And a lovely touch is to use local producers to provide specialist desserts - and they're very very good.

Top quality authentic Chinese restaurant. We’ve been to a lot of authentic Chinese restaurants in and around London (Yi-Ban) but this has to be one of the best. The flavour is perfect on most dishes, their Dim Sum is perfect although the choices are quite limited.

I've heard about the restaurant from a friend who was impressed about the experience so I have decided to visit it in a Saturday afternoon . Being enrolled in OpenTable app. I've found the booking very easy and the appointment was accurate at the location as well. The restaurant is surrounded by other restaurants, and without a previous information it's not the first to find in the area, but once you're there everything is clear and simple. The Cantonese cuisine, written on the menu book is exactly the same Cantonese cuisine as almost everywhere in a similar location, honest and well prepared. Decent prices, fast service on the table very helpful staff, nice atmosphere. As an advice, if you choose the location, make the choose when you are more than 4 people to enjoy the glass turntable placed on every large table, or, better, make a reservation for a company meeting or a birthday party to enjoy the whole services provided. All in all, a very good place to eat and spend few hours, with family or friends or colleagues !

Quite often do a walk in for myself & my wife during the week or later in the evening on a weekend if we don't have the chance to book or can't be bothered to cook. Food is flavoursome & plenty. Staff are brilliantly attentive. Menu is varied with lots of flavour. New desert menu has a touch of tiptree in it which fits in rather nicely. I wish they done a honey and black pepper meat dish other than with prawns (hey I love that sauce) Want a decent Chinese ? It's simple head to Banquet.

Have been a couple of times over the years but the management has changed recently and it really seems to have given what was always an excellent restaurant an extra shot in the arm. The food is simply stunning (IMHO) - and definitely the best I've had in the UK (be it china town or wherever). Truly authentic dishes mixed with classic UK palate pleasers - and if you can stretch to it, then try and spoil yourself and go for an evening meal one night and then again for Dim Sum at some other time (just out of this world - and the revamped menu makes ordering easier than it used to be for westerners such as myself). Had a really nice meal here with friends. We ordered the Shanghai for 4 which gives a really nice multi-course sampling of menu items. Everything was perfectly prepared and the dishes were brought out individually in courses and everything was timed really well.
