Reviews of The Albert Beefeater
S. N.
So compared to other Beefeaters; this is ok, nothing special, not amazing, just ok.
Parking is available, you need to type your registration into the machine as you enter the restaurant. (I think there may be a time restriction, so do check especially if you plan to be there a while I.e. party/large group, service is slow)
As you walk in there is a bar area to the left and a rather large restaurant area to the right. When you enter staff come over (when they are free) and seat you at a table.
Having been here many times, it is often very quiet with plenty of tables available and only a few staff who seem to have too much to do (getting a refill or staff for anything can be a challenge)
There is plenty to choose from off either, the main menu or lunch menu; which is now 2 courses for £9.45 or 3 courses for £11.45.
As a Reward Club Member (Beefeaters Loyalty Scheme) we had an email containing 1 free main meal voucher. Prior to ordering asked whether there were any restrictions on the value of the meal; no value was referred to within any of the Terms of Conditions or within Beefeaters FAQ's. Was informed that it is about £20, but could cover the Fillet Steak as only just over that at £20.99.. (all as clear as mud) The Surf & Turf at £20.49 caught my eye so ordered this.
Also ordered the Beer Battered Fish & Chips from the lunch menu and was then informed that they only had Haddock. Was asked if that was ok; fish is fish isn't it? So said yes (Then saw Haddock was showing as an 'upgrade' for an extra £2.49) We wasn't keen on the assumption that we would know Haddock was an 'upgrade' incurring extra cost and that we would want that at the increased price. Therefore decided to choose another meal, albeit felt very under pressure to pick a replacement option and settled for the Lasagne.
So the food.. I have to say the Surf (Calamari and Jumbo King Prawns) were really lovely. The Turf (Sirloin Steak) was cooked as requested but more on the tough then tender side to eat. The Lasagne was standard, nice and hot with no gristle, great to have both chips and garlic bread too.
Finished with the Caramel Apple Betty and Custard, again it was ok.. have had much better, custard was slightly cold.
Our bill.. so another member of staff brought our bill over and told us that our free main meal voucher of £19.99 had been deducted.. (Apparently the local managers set amount). Having queried the conflicting information our bill was amended accordingly. However the reason I mention this, in these current financial times, this could cause a great deal of embarrassment and people may not have the extra to cover the difference. I had and have re read the T&C's and there is no mention of a maximum value, and a clear confusion amongst staff too. I have tried to seek clarity from head office to no avail. I feel that clarity should be sought and if local decisions are allowed this should be reflected within the correspondence.
Overall ok, feel sorry for the staff who cover a vast area and many roles.. too few we feel.

My lunchtime meal was absolutely fantastic. The bbq ribs was very nice and the meat fell off the bone. The staff was very friendly and my waitress was very helpful and informative about the food. Definitely will come here again. Highly recommend xx

Another family evening out at TAB Colchester. Nice food, good customer service. Always enjoy the chargrilled prawn.

Went for breakfast, great deal that kids eat free and cooked breakfast was well cooked and a decent portion. Continental breakfast is a decent selection and keeps being topped up but the 2 toasters are really really slow so can cause a but if a queue. All in all though would recommend.

It's Friday afternoon, so my partner and I fancied a quick bite to eat outside: we booked for half 4 because, you know, dinner rush on a Friday night can be murder!
Well, the issue started before we were even out the door. Firstly, we decided to ring in and book, as we didn't want to just walk in and take up someone's space - the Beefeater have an automated system, which we were not prepared for and had a bit of a laugh trying to navigate. Safe to say, it's not very user friendly, albeit quite entertaining.
We arrived and were greeted by a man, who started leading us to a different part of the restaurant. The weather is actually nice today, so I politely asked if we could sit outside; never have I felt a waiter's energy turn hostile so damn quickly. He quite bluntly said the restaurant wouldn't provide table service for outside eaters, which I was quick to agree with and say "that's fine, we don't mind". My man then handed us the menus and totted off...okay then.
We went and found a table outside, got settled and I went back in to order food. The bartender was nice and patient, so no issues there. I took our drinks back outside and waited for the food.
When the starters came out, I was pleasantly surprised - the food quality was good and genuinely tasty. Then the mains came out very quickly after the starters, which I thought was odd: normally there's a bit of a grace period between the two to digest but oh well. The waitress also had an off energy about her: not hostile but certainly not friendly. I have a feeling she was not having the best of days.
The main, unfortunately, was a bit of a disaster. Both of us had ordered medium rare: both of us got medium. Normally, I'd never even kick up a fuss about something as trivial as that but seeing as it's a Beefeater, you'd think they'd at least cook the steak right.
The mac n' cheese was lacklustre. Chips were okay, not very flavourful unless you're dousing them in salt. The bit I enjoyed most was the chargrilled mushroom, to be honest.
Now, my partner and I always have dessert after a meal. So the fact that we promptly left after the mains is pretty telling.
A disappointing experience, to be honest. Had it been the dinner rush and the staff were swamped, we would've had some empathy for the situation: however, we were two of a handful of patrons that were pretty much treated as an inconvenience rather than customers.

There was nobody to greet you when you walked in. Just a sign saying please wait to be seated.
We waited about 5 minutes for a member of staff to seat us, by then there were quite a few people behind us.
The staff were friendly and the food was nice.
My daughter's meal got missed and she had to wait a bit for them to cook it.
I had a voucher code and the staff member didn't know how to use it so the manager came over and looked like it was an inconvenience for him to apply the voucher to my bill.
Not sure I'll be making the trip there again.

We came for breakfast and were seated a little after our booking time (no big deal) - unfortunately while waiting we had two separate arguments between customers and staff pass over us, which was unpleasant.
The food itself was mostly fine, and as always there's a great selection.

Good was good. Had to wait a while for our drinks and when the food came one of our parties chips were cold. Rectified right away. Staff friendly but looked hot and flustered but I'm not surprised in this weather.
