Reviews of The Company Shed
C. C.
Excellent bubblu service with a smile, authentic experience and top notch seafood with quick service.
It is extremely rustic, so wear warm clothes in winter.
Only thing for improvement was the smell of bleach from cleaning the floors - good to know it's clean, but a scented one would be better!
D. P.
So simple, great seafood done really well!
BYOB (and bring some nice bread! They have rolls but they're not great)... Check high tide times before driving onto island though! We got stuck for an hour!
E.
Went for breakfast today, hands down the best seafood I've ever had, the sea salt and garlic mayo is amazing and the prawns so easy to peel.
The staff were welcoming and accommodating and food was served in good time.
Will definitely be back!x

Wow! We visited The Company Shed on a recommendation and we were very impressed. We had the Crab platter, garlic grilled lobster, tiger prawns, scallops and oysters. What a treat! We will definitely be returning :)
K. H.
Best sea food you can buy great service bring your own wine and crusty bread

It is the best place where we have eaten seafood in the UK, the food was amazing, I recommend it 100%

Visiting Mersea for the weekend and was real excited to try the Company Shed. Happy to say that everything we'd read is true, the food is amazing. High quality seafood cooked with love. We ordered a lot of food for takeaway which cost about the same as a Nandos but was much more special. Ordered around 8:30 on a Friday evening and there was no queue, went for a little walk along the shore and picked up our food on return so the whole process was easy. The staff were also helpful, friendly and welcoming. Everything was delicious but we especially loved the tiger prawns and grilled oysters. This place is a real gem!

Excellent sea food, garlic stuffed mussels and tiger prawns are amazing. Best oysters I've had in a long time

Arrived at 11.30 having booked a table for 4 of us, we were seated after 5 minutes. As the only ones seated in the restaurant we didn’t expect to wait another 15 minutes for someone to take our order. The urgency of the staff was awful. We ordered dressed crab platter and 4 hot dishes and asked for everything to be brought out together as our 2 sons wanted to try some shellfish they had not had before. Unfortunately this did not happen and the 6 hot tiger prawns arrived alone followed 10 minutes later by the 4 seared scallops. 5 minutes after our cold crab platter came out followed by the rest of our hot food in 5-10 minute intervals. Not sure why our crab platter served cold had to wait 15 minutes to be served to be honest.
Overall the food was tasty and fresh especially the crab and scallops which were wonderful. The crab platter had some issues though, the mackerel was dry and rubbery and the shell in shrimp served at the centre of the platter were mushy and seemed previously frozen. The bread rolls the serve there were lovely along with real butter.
With a bit more focus on service, food order timing and with an upgrade on some of the platter ingredients things could improve a lot here but unfortunately for well over £100 we don’t think we will be back again especially with good quality competitors we can try next time.

We had booked for Sunday & were a bit concerned by some of the negative reviews. We pre-ordered a crab platter as advised on the website & picked additional items from the menu. We had a nice table complete with plates, cutlery, glasses of water & kitchen roll, which was a great idea! The food came 'as & when' as explained and was really good, especially the scallops & tiger prawns. Overall, a lovely meal, although felt the menu extras a bit pricey. (Some people bought their own wine & bread) Nice unfussy service from the young girls.

Lots of hype and was really excited to go but upon arrival, customer service wasn't that great and although the platters were nice, they weren't hugely impressive. The prawns were a bit tasteless and the crab was good although they didn't supply anything to break the crab with so had to waste a lot. The mackerel was delicious as was the rollmops. It was really expensive for what was on offer so we probably won't be returning.
M. L.
Excellent creamy oyster, quality seafood with many choices.

Rode to The Company Shed from London just to try the seafood as they have excellent reviews. Pleased to say they 100% deserve 5star rating as someone complained about their prices i have to say you get what you pay for and in my opinion worth the price. Staff are very nice too. One other biker i met there rode from Folkestone to try this place that to me sais it all. Keep up the good work guys and see you next week

It's OK...
We were seated next to the back door, even though other tables were free...staff constantly were in and out, with the door swinging shut and rattling me and our table.
Good crab cakes and salt and pepper squid were good, adequate oysters, cockles and smoked fish.
But not a patch on Seafood at Dawn...
The place felt like they were too busy and didn't quite pay enough attention to detail.
It's situated at the touristy end of the island of the island and that's what we felt like .
The young staff were charming and doing their best, but seemed to lack training and confidence.
We'll be heading back to the East next time.

My husband and I were very disappointed with this restaurant, it was highly recommended to us by several people, the owner was very nice and attentive when we arrived, but the other staff were a bit lost! We had seen them their on the Sunday, so must work there regularly! We were told that they now provided wine and bread and didn’t have to bring our own, so we didn’t, that was a mistake, unfortunately the bread rolls that my husband had at just under £2 each, there was nothing artisan or freshly made about them. I always think out of sight out of mind, we asked for napkins! I had to get up and go inside and ask again , my husband wanted wine, know one came out, so I went in again to get wine, and go find someone again to get another roll, all a bit of a pain and the seafood platter was nothing that I couldn’t Russell up at home at half the price, we went to a place in East Mersea in May, which was great, the best thing about The Shed were the 4 cooked oysters we had were Amazing, but not worth
£ 68.00. Such a shame.

One word. Lobster! Hahah! Fantastico 👌 Can't say no to a BYOB (bring your own booze 😝)

After singing the praises of the company shed to my partner, I was left embarrassingly disappointed. For those that remember an authentic fresh and no frills experience with wonderful fresh seafood at a reasonable price, will find the experience a disappointment. The prices compared to other local establishments are hugely inflated. The two mini seafood platters ordered were underwhelming. I fear that they have become a victim of their own success and lost their way. Not all change is progress :(
S. B.
Lovely staff, fabulous seafood and loved the low key space. There should be more spaces like this - honest, take-us-as-we-are places that don’t have to go for ‘boutique’ style and serve delicious, worth looking forward to food! Thanks to everyone. X
D. W.
Very much a spit and sawdust fish restaurant. Amazing staff, who are friendly and welcoming, plus helpful when choosing from the menu or specials. An array of locally caught produce. If you love delicious fish, crabs and lobster, served in a rustic and honest fashion come here. Note, they now have a drinks licence, but if you want bread you need to bring your own bread. There is a bread shop close by.

Jay Rayner was asked on the One Show what was his favourite eatery was?
The company shed he stated after pondering some.
Mr Rayner seriously needs to give his head a wobble. A visit to Cancale in Brittany would also raise his low bar too.
The two of us after driving hours spent over £85 on the following;
12 x Oysters
1 x Dressed crab platter
3 x Oysters grilled with mushrooms
3 x oysters grilled with cheese
1x spicy lobster soup
1 x glass of wine
2 x soft drinks
If the fish & shellfish elements had been of spanking good quality and beautifully presented maybe the £80 plus was justified but it was mediocre at best.
The place is run on a shoestring despite them sitting on a gold mine. To my utter amazement they turned all walk in trade away and only allowed pre booked customers.
We had of course booked but they had empty seats and tables and must of turned away £500 plus of trade.
To me, it seemed they didn't want or expect any trade and had only stocked accordingly. The display cabinets if I think about it were completely empty.
The oysters, (why we actually went) were at best, average. Small and not even served on a bed of ice.
The crab platter consisted of the dressed crab, peeled prawns, shell on prawns, 1 green lip mussel and some smoked salmon. At £25 it wasn't value for money.
I could weep thinking of the 'fruit de mer' that could buy in French France.
The soup was pleasant & tasty but more a curried soup than spiced, unfortunately only served Luke warm too.
Hindsight being a wonderful thing, due to the poor presentation and overall qaulity the £85 would of bought far better quality elsewhere.
Sadly & with regret, especially if you're a foodie this isn't worth traveling too.
Thank goodness we went past Wilkin & Son factory in Tiptree. The day wasn't completely wasted.

The Company Shed is a hidden local treat. Set just off the Blackwater their seafood is caught locally. The Shed itself is a homely, unpretentious restaurant offering sit down and takeaway shellfish and other fish. I had a takeaway plate of mixed treats: a crevette, prawns, cockles, plus a classic seafood stick! Eating it by the sea really makes it.
Don't expect a white linen and sommelier experience - just great produce honestly served.
J. W.
I went to this place with my family and drive for about 1.5hrs to get here. We tried everything in the menu except for the raw oysters.
I have to say the food is pretty good. They sell lobsters at 50 pound a lobster. They were delicious to be fair though a little salty. Again the the pan fried scallop and bacon, you can't go wrong really. You're allowed to being your own drinks and bread which is nice, however the food itself is a bit pricey, otherwise I'd rank this a 4 star instead of a 3.
Overall, well cooked and seasoned seafood, pricey for what it is, not worth travelling over an hour for, but if you're more local than I am then it's pretty good.
D. G.
I just keep coming back and time after time the food is top quality!
If you are looking for delicious hot and cold seafood that is honestly priced then look no further. You MUST book to avoid disappointment as it gets very busy and rightly so. Well done all at The Company Shed!
Z. Z. N.
Maybe my expectations were too high - it is a great, friendly no-frills seafood stall with cooked options. But that’s about it. The choices of seafood was the same as some competitors and the cooking was also comparable.
Do bring your own bread and wine!
R. H.
Honest rustic fresh seafood served proudly without any heirs or graces.

Ordered fresh home deliveries from The Company Shed several times now and have always been so impressed with the freshness, quality and delivery.
Had an issue with my most recent order which was down to human error but the way that the company shed dealt with it was exceptional, great customer service is so much more than a smiley voice at the end of a phone, it's only really tested when you have a "problem", The Company Shed is amazing, food has always been amazing and I can't recommend them enough, book in advance and order twice as many tiger prawns than you "think you'll need" you won't be disappointed. 🥳🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

Great atmosphere. Take your own drinks and bread. Book on the day. Fantastic value for such good fresh seafood

We really had the most lovely lunch. Everything was super fresh and delicious. Special mention for the prawns, squid and oysters. The salt and thyme on the prawns were next level and I’m totally stealing that idea. Yes, it’s very busy but just chill, relax and have a good chat while you wait for you food. Staff work exceptionally hard here and all with a smile on their face. Worth the wait and I’ll definitely be back again. Thank you.

Updated 02/05/19. Its been a year since i managed to get back here and boy was i happy to return. What i didn't manage to put over in my previous review was just how friendly the staff are, old customer or newbie you are treated like part of the family. We chose a weekday morning time to visit which is a great idea. They get very busy especially at weekends and holidays. After getting our table which came with a breadboard and knife supplied for the bread and butter we had brought with us. We selected our food ( see the pictures) and placed our order at the counter, all our food was scratch cooked and served within ten minutes, but allow longer at the busy times, it is all cooked to order. We had taken our own wine but they do now sell some if you need it. They also now supply salad so you don't need to take your own. A quick check by one of the staff to make sure everything was OK and then they leave you to munch away to your hearts content. Things have changed slightly as they now accept bookings which is a god send at the weekend, email them as far in advance as possible via their website, they check them daily. They can deliver during the week, I assume that is local only and they still do take out of fresh products. Disabled size toilet available which was clean. Park in the local council car park, two hours 50p over that £3.50. The bottom line about this place is its a no frills, laid back sea food adventure with great staff. I will leave the old review below as it has nearly 4000 views and I am updating to a solid five stars just like their food rating. Please leave your own reviews i am sure you will love it just like me. One last note don't forget to check the tide tables as Mersea island occasionally gets cut off. PREVIOUS REVIEW great food Great staff no frills. This extremely popular place gets packed out so go early. Take your own wine and bread, find a table then select from the counter. Its all cooked and prepared from fresh. Wine glasses are supplied. Middle price range. Enjoy the experience.

If I could award more stars I would, probably the nicest sea food I have ever eaten. Friendly down to earth atmosphere with staff that go the extra mile to help, one even chased me down the road with the jacket I forgot.
D.
A very enjoyable seafood lunch at the Company Shed consisting of mussels, oysters (raw and grilled), fish cakes and (the star of the show) the Tuna burger special. Don’t forget to take your own bread, fizzy water and wine with you - although there is a great selection of drinks if you forget (like we did).
Great relaxed atmosphere, super service with a smile, we look forward to our return.
E. L.
The Seafood here is absolutely incredible. I went with my friends and we sat for about three hours just working our way through the menu. The oysters or some of the best in the country and about a quarter of the price you would pay in London. Bring your own booze and bread. Expect to wait a while for a table if you arrive any later than 12. Amazing unpretentious experience. Highly recommended.
P. E.
We had a seafood platter and I had Dressed Crab platter, all really fresh and tasty, also had lovely glass of wine, which really enhanced our lunch. One word of warning it gets busy so best to pre-book, or get there about 11.30
J. W.
Wonderful lunch again today - food so fresh and well prepared, spoilt for choice with so many lovely seafood dishes to choose from. Friendly, helpful staff - highly recommend for a seafood experience to remember.
K. M.
The best oysters!!! Best seafood!!! Simply the best all kind of fish!!! Great service and wonderful atmosphere!!! All was worth of waiting for a table. Will be there again soon.
R. h.
Seafood is super fresh but some of the staff are bit rude. Remember to bring your own bread as theirs isnt good and expensive.
They dont have changing table for babies either. They offered us to change the babies nappy on the floor of the bathroom, which isnt ideal
J. H.
Was full as booking 2 days in advance was required but ordered a takeaway of a seafood platter and fishcakes, which we pop back for about 1 hour later and sat on a bench nearby to ate. The food was smashing the staff were helpful and friendly and I now know to book in advance at our next visit. 😁

Absolutely divine meal today. Seafood, lobster, potatoes, wine, bread, salad and lovely staff to celebrate my birthday.
M. J.
We go here a lot even though it's an hour plus drive. Make sure you arrive before 12 to get a table. Bring your own bread and butter. We used to bring our own wine, but they've started to do local Mersea wine which is really good. The seafood is the nicest I've ever had anywhere.
M. I. (. I.
Visited this well known Mersea Island restaurant for a light lunch, chose the tuna steak burger which was delicious. I asked for it to be cooked medium, which it was, to perfection. Staff were friendly and attentive, service was quick. Great location for people enjoying a stroll around this beautiful area.
R. e.
Great food and friendly service, the sea food is top quality with lovely flavours.
Avoid high tide time as you won't get to the place. Booking is advised as the place is busy a lot of the time, but they always try and get you in.
M. O.
The grilled oysters and scallop salad were superb, washed down with a local Mersea Island beer. Unfortunately the young lad serving us did not know what the specials on the chalk board were and when I asked how the anchovies on the specials board were served he shrugged and said "don't know; most people just eat them how they're served". Turns out they didn't have any. Maybe it was 1st day so not representative but he then forgot the cod we ordered too which was really poor and not much of an apology or attempt to get an alternative on the table quickly to correct the error. Can't remember the last time I withheld a tip but I did on this occasion. Shame as the seafood that came was great.
C. P.
Very nice find, good selection of sea food stuffs. Though the ambiance and investment in how it looks is kept at a minimum. Though it s worth a visit
R. G.
Super fresh BYO wine and bread seafood experience. Smiley staff, Dynamic atmosphere
T. M.
Wasn't very busy but then we went when kids are in school, nothing really appealed to me on the menu which is unfortunate as I love fish and seafood, prices are not expensive expensive but your going to pay out lol
S. M.
Quiet today but it was quite early. Freshest ingredients is what it's about. Quite a price difference between eat in and take away, so I opted for take away crab cakes, which were crispy and yummy. Not a 'posh' place but good, honest seafood.
J. R.
Love this place ..do the best cooked oysters in Mersea x
J. G.
Excellent service
We brought our own fizzy booze
Ate so many prawns
#HaikuReview
J. D.
Great fresh fish with no pretension. Really enjoyed the day's special steamed mussels. I can remember the wonderful sweetness as I review them 2 days later! Tiger prawns and scallops equally good. Top tip is to take your own bread & butter.
M. B.
I keep returning with different friends and return friends as well. This place andvthe food are fantastic.
l. h.
We visited 23rd Feb been told about this place so we took our dogs for a nice beach walk and ended up getting a small selection it's the best seafood I've tried my personal favourite were the cockles my wife absolutely loved the dressed crab
J. R.
A strange experience. Great atmosphere but had to wait for 40 minutes for any sort of service. Ordered wine, but no-one came to tell us that they had run out of the label that we had ordered. The spiced lobster soup was nice and warming, but way too 'curryish' for such a delicate seafood. The mussels, grilled, with a parmesan crust were good, but as they (and the sauté potatoes) arrived at the same time as the soup, they were cold by the time we got to eat them. So.... a bit of bread and some drinks when we arrived and we wouldn't have felt so disgruntled.
K. T.
Totally fabulous!!!haven't been for years due to covid. Can't wait to come again. Such a change to be offered water. Food cooked to perfection lovely service thank you very much
R. Y.
If you are after native oysters, this is the best online order company. I used this company in the last 10 years without any single fault .Quality, price and delivery are second to none. Highly recommended.
S. U.
I had the best vegetarian lasagna I have ever eaten. I had it to takeaway from the company shed, along with a fish pie for my partner after a busy day at work, it was delicious and so nice being able to just sit down at home with some amazing food that I haven't had to cook.!! I wish I could have one every night! Will definantly be having more of them again 👍📲
R. W.
We had a lovely visit, 12 oysters and 2 platters. Unfortunately a day later my partner started being sick and the day after I am the same. I presume it was the oysters.
Such a shame as we were recommending to all our friends.
A. A.
There usually is a waiting line, so be prepared to wait! Baked oysters were amazing!
I. A.
Best seafood I've ever had, will be giving it another visit 😋
R. G.
The food was delicious. The staff were lovely and very happy to recommend things.
V. W.
Visited many times. Pleased to see you can now reserve a table. Great food at a great price
D. W.
Lovely seafood . Lola the main front of house member of staff was very professional and friendly. The back room staff very good at preparing and serving the food . Lovely afternoon.

Once again, this afternoon, we had the pleasure to enjoy The Company Shed. We ordered the lobster soup, which is beyond delicious. A tuna burger, spicy fish cakes (one of my favourite dishes) and their potatoes which are divine. It is simply worth every penny. We have moved to the Island, and having this little beauty within walking distance is a delight that we treasure.
C. B.
Just wanted to say that we had a brilliant Sunday lunch at the Company Shed. So glad we made the trip over from Cambridge. We booked in advance with the owner who made us feel most welcome. It was delicious. From the native oysters (requested in advance), to the grilled Tiger prawns and salt & pepper squid. Blow out. We will be back.
A. P.
Absolutely brilliant. Delicious and fairly priced. Local beer was excellent too
S. M.
Lived up to it's fabulous reputation, you need to book as it is always busy. Fantastic food.
P. M.
Absolutely wonderful, this is the great British cuisine everyone needs to know about. Fantastic fresh seafood, perfectly cooked & great service, unpretentious & great value. Thanks Sebastian & the team, we will return.
M. P.
Super food, looked forward to visiting and wasn't disappointed
J. B.
A pleasant experience. After travelling quite a distance in search of prawns, I must say the service was great with a difference to your normal restuarant. We were welcomed with a smile explained how things worked and then served. The Oysters were great, the Tiger prawns were really great and really tasty. Altogether worth the days outing.
k. k.
Although the food was great, the service was absolutely shocking. I stood waiting to order for ages and was totally ignored by staff. After queuing for ages to order at the stand I was told that staff would serve me at the table. So I go sit, finally manage to flag down a staff member who tells me I have to go queue at the stand and because they don't do table service. The manager was far more concerned with the food being prepared then customers being served. The food was delicious but the service ruined the whole experience and based on that I wouldn't return.
D. B. (.
Delicious fresh seafood, we’ve visited quite a few times over the years. Charming setting, ideal to sit on beach, look out over estuary. Prepare to wait, take your own bread, butter & wine. Simple fun experience. We had to stay longer on our last visit due to very high tide. No problem it added to our experience.
M. C.
Great food, if slightly small portions, but sometimes less is more, and this is that kind of place. Amazing welcome and service with a smile. Bring your own bread, drinks and don't forget the butter. If you haven't booked, park up and arrive at 11am to see if they have a table free. We'll definitely come again. 😁
r. h.
Believe the hype. The food is properly nice. Being able take your own bread and booze is cool. Friendly and helpful staff. Lunch for 2 was about 50 quid, which felt very reasonable. Get there before 12 at the weekend or there is a long wait to be seated.
A. G.
If you're ever in Mersea Island this is an absolute must visit if you like fresh fish and seafood. It's friendly, rustic and above all the food is outstanding. You can even take your own alcohol. It's a not to be missed on Mersea experience :-)
S. L.
Amazing you must eat here if you get a chance. The best seafood on the Island fact
H.
Great place for seafood. Fresh fish and oysters, good service and friendly staff. You can bring your own drink and bread. I don’t understand the bread part. Why can’t they sell bread? Never the less the place is worth going just for the seafood. No one regret going to this place unless you have seafood alleges. Good selection of shell fish as well.
O. L.
I was disappointed with the quality of the food
I heard such good things about this place all the way from London but after visiting a competitor of theirs the day before I was disappointed with their food. The lobster was overcooked and the garlic butter was burnt. The prawns where bland also. However the tuna burger was really nice, but rather very small. but definitely not worth the price
D. E.
I've been here a number of time's. Great oysters, there are hot specials everyday we had squid, crab cake and king prawns.
Take your own bread and wine for a very reasonable lunch.
Get there early you can't book. It's very different and rustic.
P. C.
Great seafood cafe. A wide range of freshly caught shellfish and fish. Very flexible menu with platters to share. Bring your own bread and drink. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. You can now book. Otherwise arrive very early and make sure you have parked first and all arrive together.
p. n.
best sea food ever must try will be back thanks
H. D.
Delicious, recommend the crab, the grilled oysters
I. R.
Excellent food in an informal but busy atmosphere. Booking only and no walk ins at the moment. Arrive hungry.
N. C.
The best seafood I've ever had. Very fresh. You have to take your own bread and byo wine although they have a small selection there. No fancy furniture but great seafood. Can't book ahead just turn up early as it's a small place!
N. H.
Lovely ambiance... Cool rustic setting. Delicious Colchester Native Oysters and seafood. Happy helpful staff. Remember to take your own bread and booze. Very enjoyable afternoon.
a. b.
Lovely seafood, started to get a bit pricey
S. M.
Quirky restaurant where you are encouraged to bring your own booze and bread! Small, well priced portions. Would recommend making a platter of your favourite seafood. Will definitely be back...
A. S.
Whilst the quality of their products are never in doubt, their pricing is far from "competitive". However, the staff are very friendly, the surroundings on the island have a certain charm worth at least one visit.
D. K.
Great seafood. Bookings only now. Fortunately it was a nice day and we got fantastic take out. Recommended
A. M.
Book on the day as it always gets packed out during the summer. Bring your own bread and drinks and enjoy local fresh sea food. The oysters should be tried as Mersea is renowned for them. The sea food platter that they do gives you a little taste of what is available. And they do both a hot and cold menu.
M. C.
I love this place the seafood is amazing quality and the variety is fantastic we had a lovely meal and lots of fun on our visit. I have recommended this place to many people since and a lot of people outside of the area have already heard of it which I believe speaks for itself. I hope to return again in the very near future.
J. M.
A great selection of seafood and the prices are generally reasonable, especially the seafood platters. However, some dishes are a little steeply priced, such as the scallops. The staff are friendly and the service is good. The 'first come, first served' basis for tables can be a little stressful, but appears necessary due to the popularity of the place.
M. E.
While eating in hasn't been an option you can buy "cook-at-home" kits for their popular dishes. The tiger prawns come with oil, herby salt and thick mayo for dipping - and they're always super helpful on cooking tips.
C. J.
Came to this place after the other Oyster bar cafe just down the road was fully booked. It's a sort of place where you feel really comfortable by the friendly staff and environment. You can take along your own bread to accompany the dishes served and I would definitely recommend doing this. We were fortunate to have a next table offer us leftover bread they had. Next time I would probably go for less platter and more oysters..
A. H.
Amazing garlic prawns! Not a glamorous place to eat but they dont care and don't pretend to be and it's always busy, the food is delicious and the staff are lovely. Its bring your own bread and wine.
T. T.
Very basic seafood shed with absolutely no frills. They serve fresh catches of all your favourite seafoods. I'd recommend the crayfish and rollmops to start. The prices are quite large, larger than you'd expect in such a run down place considering they place is in desperate need of some cosmetic attention. But the produce is good.
H. W.
Loved it, definitely take bread for your meal..was amazing sea food... Well recommendt
L. W.
Absolutely delicious and fully Covid compliant as takeaway onlyat the moment. Very friendly, service with a smile! Perfect place to grab gorgeous hot seafood and find a spot near by to look out over the estuary. Will definitely be back.
Z. G.
I have been visiting West Merseafor years and finally went in to book a table. I was told to bring own bread and butter and come back in an hour. You can even BYO if you are not driving.
My friends treated themselves to the sea food platter. The special that day was tuna.
A real delight for sea food lovers.
J. N.
Great food, drink and cooking family filled atmosphere. Thank you and glad I booked in advance.
L. B.
We arrived at 12.30pm on Saturday afternoon to be greeted by a young blonde boy ~(around 14 years of age) He informed me that there were no tables available until 3.30pm for our group of 5. We decided to get a take away as we had been told this was a great place to get seafood. The young boy served us, Oysters, Crab, prawns, cockles, crab sticks and Rollmops.
I don't normally write reviews but the excellent customer service this boy provided and the manners he had are a tribute to his mum he was very pleasant and polite and I would just like to say thank you and although we didn't get to sit and enjoy we were still very happy with the level of service. Keep it up! :-)
A. B.
- made bread and brought it ✔️
- got wine ✔️
- navigayed the most complex and slightly stressful queue/not queue system in the world ✔️
You've made it, the fish is great, fresh tasty, lots of it. The shed is also great, informal, tables big enough for lots of bits of fish and shellfish. And luckily everyone is friendly and the service is efficient. We'd recommend the beetroot cured gravadlax and the crab (undressed). Go and enjoy this slightly weird pocket of England!
C. B.
Came all the way to Mersea Island to check out this restaurant and it lived up to expectation! The seared tuna with tomatoes salsa was at the top of the list but every single dish made the taste buds do a little shiver! I loved the BYO bread&wine, helping yourself to glasses and sharing the table with other people. Emma our waitress was such a gem and gave us advice about the area too.
My advice is to go experience yourself!
D. A.
The only place worth eating seafood in mersea. A platter for two people will feed four. But be prepared bring your own drink, bread and condiments, make a reservation on weekends and in the summer.
J. H.
Great for fresh seafood plus you can take your own wine. Take out shell fish very expensive. I sail all over the east coast and the dressed crab here is double the price. £12.00 each.
A. P.
Really good fresh seafood...scallops to cook at home were amazing
C. C.
Glorious. One of my favourite places in the UK. A special place for my fiance and I. Some of our fondest memories are from this little restaurant. You can bring your own wine and bread but the local island wine they sell is delicious.
w.
Friendly staff, great food, unique atmosphere , set in a landscape that brings "Great Expectations" alive. This a place where you go to enjoy the experience. It would be so out of place to have a glitzy establishment in this setting. The fisherman' shed just sits so well with the inshore craft and boatyards. Go early, get a time and then walk along the shore to experience the seaside without neon lights before having your meal. Even the gale force winds that we had sweeping through added to the atmosphere of this shore. A "sharing platter and salad" is the basic starting point but the specials are really special additions. Meagre parking nearby is quickly filled.
M. L.
The food here is amazing. Unfortunately last time we visited I queued for 15 minutes just to hear that they were not serving hot food anymore (and "might be serving it later on") as they have been too busy.
e. w.
First class. Food excellent. The girls serving are helpful and good humoured. We took our own bread and wine. Just wanted to eat our way through the menu. A must visit.
G. P.
Nothing but fish so you can take your own bread and beer, great atmosphere, great to take a cooler bag for the afternoon spent with friends. Be sure to book. ££££ for fresh lobster and crab.
M. G.
Food excellent. Wrap up warm this time of year as very cold inside.
Disappointing that they don't serve hot drinks.
F. L.
You can't get fresher sea food unless you catch it yourself. Unusual rustic and basic setting bit a must for any seafood lover.
Worth bringing some bread from bakery by the church as this is not available from them.
c. s.
Up until 4pm you can eat in bring your own wine and bread. They sell local beer and wine. After 4pm they are open as a takeaway (cold food only). So if you are visiting West Mersea why not drop in for some local seafood, wine or beer. When I visited the staff were very nice and helpful.
N. H.
Lovely relaxed atmosphere. BYO drink/bread and eat lovely fresh seafood. We went in the winter and are already planning a summer trip. Very popular so book or be prepared to wait.
A. L.
Fantastic place with gloriously fresh seafood! But be prepared to be turned down if you haven't put your name down, as it's hugely popular. Bring some bread and wine and you won't be disappointed.
E. M.
Unpretentious, friendly hardworking team. Delicious sea food . They sell some sea products over the counter and now do Takeaway as well. Always busy - book in advance!
c. c.
This is a long old drive from south east london.
West Mersea is a lovely island and feels both islandy and old world at once.
The Company Shed has changed over time, but not very much.
We have been coming for about 15 years and it serves some very fancy oysters these days. My wife just loves them as I do. Nowadays it also serves local wines and beers but you still have to bring your own carbohydrates (bread, slabs of polenta, potato satads, or what have you)
We ordered. grilled oysters which were just gorgeous, fishcakes to die for and. simply cooked fresh mussels. The mussels were steamed in cider and onions and did not quite do it for us but the rest was just glorious. We washed it down with green tabasco a bottle of Villa Maria sauvignon blanc and some giabatta bread. A truly sumptious lunch and one of the real foodie glories of England.
j. g. b.
We got takeaway food and are it on the beach. Food was tasty, well cooked and thoughtfully presented and packaged. Will definitely return.
J. B.
What's not to like? Super fresh sea food and BYOB followed by a lovely coastal walk? The beetroot gravadlax is fantastic as is the crab platter. Good value too!
G. C.
What a lovely place to eat in even more so as with my lovely Wife had arranged for birthday cake and impromptu birthday sing along
Food excellent
First class all round
Thanks to all for the birthday sing along
A. A.
Excellent seafood cuisine with exceptional service in amazing surroundings.Take your own wine and ENJOY.
P. M.
This is a wonderful place to eat. I have been going for over 9 years and it never disappoints. Fresh seafood and great company.
J. D.
Such a unique fun place to visit with amazing seafood!!!! If you can't get a seat then grab a takeaway and sit on the beach. Love this place. Such yummy food everytime.
M. A.
We love this place! If you're after a bookable, warm, cosy eatery, don't come here. If you're after super, super seafood with generous portions, look no further.
A. I.
Absolutely amazing. Everything was super fresh.
A.
If I could give them more stars I would! The freshest seafood you'll ever find, absolutely delicious.
R. P.
I loved every bite of seafood, I choose share plate just for my self, amazing taste , forgot to take photo, stuff is really friendly, advise for seafood lovers, book in advance, they are quite busy, I'll be back, I know this 😊
J. B.
This was on our wishlist for some years and the experience of finally making it was all so worth it. The native oysters are exactly as they should be fresh and luscious. Book and go...
S. S.
Simply the best seafood about - it doesn't get any fresher! You can still bring your own bread and wine - brilliant treat
M. W.
Fresh shellfish served with a smile. They now take bookings so worth ringing ahead. Don’t forget to bring bread and wine - you won’t be disappointed!
S. S.
The best seafood going... Not a lot more to say!
C. S.
Great little place. Rough around the edges but fits perfectly for the area and it's easy dining set up. The local beer works great with seafood.
P. G.
Fantastic shell fish and oysters no frills restaurant. You can't book so get there early to get your name down. Check the tides before you go in order to get across the causeway
B. M.
Very good food, shabby-chic venue, thoughtfully provide bread board and knife, can buy wine or take your own. Service cheerful, although our initial reception was not the warmest...
M. C. d. L.
Loved it, fresh seafood, great atmosphere great staff very welcoming. Take your own drinks and bread, there is a shop/cafe who sells baguette and alcohol if needed.
I. D.
This is the best place where I've been - to compare the price and service:) If you desperate for yummy , well prepared seafood and don't mind about easy place, you have to visit it!! Don't forget to take the good friend, alcohol and bread with you - and I can bet, all your stress will be dissolved enjoining the food & company:)
B. H.
Lovely fresh oysters and shellfish. Limited menu, but good. Take your own drinks and nibbles to go with your food. Then enjoy
L. G.
Great and tasteful food. The dressed crab is amazing and the cockles are really fresh. Staff nice and friendly, best meal ever! See you soon :)
S. M.
Lovely location to serve shells
J. E.
Real old seafood shack with quality seafood, platters are lovely and fresh and they now sell beer and wine as well as take cards , unless you're lucky you will need to wait but well worth it, don't forget to take your bread with you.
J. T.
Amazing lunch here today, very fresh. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable
K. O.
These people really care how seafood tastes. If you’re after restaurant quality takeaway this is the place to go.
f.
A great place for fresh seafood. Rustic yet immensely pleasant experience.
p. w.
Its low key for some but I love the simplicity and the seafood is excellent. Go early to avoid the wait. Take a bottle of wine and some bread rolls; what more do you need know.
M. W.
A very good place to get seafood cooked or raw there is a little bit of waiting but well worth the wait
D. P.
The Company Shed is a family run business...I have been fortunate to know of it and enjoy it's fabulous food for over 25 years....if you love sea food this is the place to be...they offer a vast selection of fresh produce to eat in or takeaway...by far the best eaterie on Mersea...
S. W.
Brilliant concept and gorgeous seafood. Just wish there was an outside table or two out the front so that I could eat there when I have my dog with me as I live far from mersea and when I go I always go for a day out with the dog
M. O.
It had delicious salad, fish and drinks. You have to bring ur own bread, but u can also bring ur own drinks. There is lots of parking available, and it is easily accessible.
c. C.
Very cozy place. Good and fresh seafood. U must bring with u the bread and tha wine. But it necessary a refresh of the location.
j. c.
Great value, fresh and well prepared seafood in a relaxed atmosphere. Bring your own booze and bread.

J. C.
This close to fresh seafood should be better, but we did come at last doors so hopefully it’s normally better? Prefer some of the food I’ve had further along.
K. K. K.
Fantastic, if a little expensive & too popular (thanks telegraph & guardian!!) The best seafood and an unrivalled experience...take your own bread & beer for a true taste of the sea :) an Essex secret that leaked out!
N. B.
I brought some fresh oysters and haddock
P. S.
They've adapted incredibly for Covid. They may not be open to eat in but the takeaway menu is still fantastic!
T. J.
Fresh seafood. Bring your own bread and alcohol. Gets busy may need to book or wait for tables. Butter sold here and fresh fish.

N. W.
Fantastic, been many times, had the spicy lobster soup this time which was fantastic!!!!
P. R.
Basic decor - it is all about the amazing seafood here. Bring a bottle of prosecco and some baguettes, they're fine with it - it's awesome.
C. A.
Excellent quality and price, superb!!!!
J. B.
If you like fresh seafood you can't go wrong here, but remember to bring your own drinks as they don't have an alcohol license.
J. D.
Suggest getting "dressed" crab platter unless you are well practiced at cracking crabs. Be very careful with parking as it is easy to get caught with high tides!
M. C.
Amazing
T. W.

A. B. (.
There is nowhere better for no-nonsense, fresh, delicious seafood...and it's cheap and a BYO! No booking so get there by 12.30 or you will likely have a very long wait.
