Reviews of Tymperleys
D. L.
Fantastic location. So beautiful in the morning when the sun shines through the windows..
Good to put your headphones on and work. Staff are happy to let you stay as long as you'd like.
Food is good, but nothing out of this world.
C.
Had a great time at Tymperleys, suitable for a special occasion, but slightly on the pricier side I would think for what they offer. They do have a lovely range of tea, cake and breakfast/brunch selection but nothing especially memorable. The interior reminds me of the historic Lavenham houses, which gives it a charming character, and has a superb courtyard for a sunny day, which is what won us over. We could sit and work on our laptops while soaking in the sun and the overall lovely atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit on a nice day.
I. M.
Excellent food. The scotch eggs are highly recommended
P. E.
Delightful setting; like a secret graden, so unexpected in the heart of a busy town. Superb food menu with delicious coffee and proper leaf tea. Lovely friendly and well-trained staff.
J. R.
Loved it! Great service, great ppl, delicious food and a great atmosphere.
C. S.
Gorgeous location deserves 5 stars. Fabulous half timbered Tudor hall restaurant and glorious outside space. But undrinkable coffee and average cake offerings rates 0 stars. Sadly my decaf iced coffee with oat was so harsh and bitter I actually couldn’t finish it. My friend declared her Victoria sponge was ‘made in a factory’. My blueberry and buttermilk cake again seemed to have the self same sponge base as the Victoria with a few blueberries scattered in. No evidence of buttermilk that I could see! Earlier in the day I had had a particularly great decaf iced coffee with oat in Colchester so it can be done! It’s a shame because we really need to support businesses that take on these ancient buildings and maintain them for the nation at considerable cost to themselves. But really an undrinkable coffee.
K. B.
Such a beautiful venue. Thank you for a warm welcome.
S. C.
Food was to a good standard, service was very efficient and friendly. All in al a very good experience. I would highly recommend this cafe/restaurant
V. F.
Lovely staff and delicious food! I’ve been for afternoon tea and lunch and thoroughly enjoyed both. They even do children’s afternoon tea now which went down a treat!

Something is changed ... in a bad direction.
The service is very good (like always), nice atmosphere but the food is really bad. Maybe they have a new chef or they need a new one.
Eggs are disgusting.
L. W.
Beautiful building, friendly staff and choice of afternoon tea for vegans and meet eaters!

We popped in here as we was walking past, particularly as we was talking about the old clock museum that used to be inside - curiousity got the better of us so we went in for drink and cake!
It was busy inside and we had to wait a few mins to get a table but staff were welcoming albeit they seemed a bit rushed. The building and rooms are nice but also felt a lityle cramped (at least in the first room where we was). They didnt seem to be botheted that little man (2 yrs old) was with us - this can sometimes put us off going in places!
In terms of cake there was about 6 options in menu and about 4 on the specials board. Wife went with choc orange and I went for a raspberry cheesecake brownie (I was intrigued as I like both cheesecake and brownie!!) It was indeed very nice...!
Service felt a little rushed during our visit - bill was given to us straight after finished cake (whilst little man was licking crumbs from plate) but we hadnt actually finished our drinks.
Wife reported no loo roll in toilet when she went! (A plesant way to end a review..?)
All in all an OK experience.

Wonderful afternoon tea at Tymperleys. The room, service and food were excellent. Highly recommended for a special occasion.

What a special place!
My wife and I booked Tymperley's as our wedding venue when we first viewed the property a few years ago - it was our first venue viewing and we fell in love straight away. It's an absolutely stunning building with such a rich historical feel and the gardens are so beautiful. The central location is brilliant but as soon as you step through the gate it doesn't feel like you're in town centre.
Our wedding day was a couple of weeks ago now and we are so so pleased we went with this venue as our first choice.
We had the most perfect small wedding day anyone could ask for. Michelle and the team have been amazing from the absolute start and made the process so easy and seamless. We had to postpone the day twice due to Covid lockdowns and there were no dramas about this whatsoever, Michelle was so helpful and kind to us. When the day finally arrived we felt in such safe hands, everything was sorted and I did not feel any stress for one moment as soon as we were both at the venue.
We opted for Afternoon Tea for the day guests and an informal BBQ for the evening and our guests absolutely loved it. The food was lovely, so tasty and the drinks were kept flowing throughout. We discussed all these options beforehand and we found Michelle to be super amenable and flexible to our wishes which meant that there were some great choices available for our guests. We had quite a few dietary requirements to cater for and the team took this in their stride, coming up with fantastic alternatives to ensure nobody went hungry.
Thank you so much Michelle and team, you were so wonderful and we are so happy we chose Tymperleys, we had the most amazing day!

A hidden oasis in Colchester is Tymperley's. Nice friendly staff with a variety of food and drink options.
Unfortunately I can't give 5 stars as I walked into dog poo on the grounds of the place. I learned that the manager's dog was responsible, it's a shame this wasn't cleaned up as it took away from my visit to the venue.
W. B.
Nice enough food, without being exceptional in any way, the interior is lovely and the staff were friendly, but, despite all that, I'm in no rush to return.
D. K.
We fhought it seemed a bit empty until realising most people were in the sunny courtyard. Food was vey pleasant and the service was very polite. A most relaxed meeting spot.
R. M.
Nice peaceful location, in the middle of town, but within a walled garden, lovely when the sun is out for Al fresco dining or just a ni e coffee. Good food, friendly service. Nice way to unwind after a few hours shopping.
L. K.
I came here with some friends for an afternoon tea for a baby shower. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. They provided a separate vegetarian afternoon tea and even a vegan one for another person in the group. The cakes were all delicious, I’d highly recommend Tymperleys! Beautiful setting too.
S. V.
Quaint, traditional table service restaurant, great for breakfast, brunch or tea...and probably more. Helpful, unobtrusive staff. Not expensive either. Close to town centre. Well worth a regular visit I'd say after only my first.
A. N.
Excellent spot for a quiet cuppa to take a break from shopping. We stopped on a sunny morning and had delicious loose-leaved breakfast tea with a teacake and lovely Tiptree jam, and a cheese and gooseberry scone. Table service from very friendly staff. Great facilities for babies too. Definitely recommend.
E. S.
Gorgeous setting, very peaceful in the centre of busy Colchester. Homemade scones and clotted cream were delicious!
J.
Just lovely. Amazing Christmas cake. Beautiful surroundings, lovely staff.
R. S.
Lovely atmosphere for a family gathering, more special as it was a wedding. X
N. L.
Really delicious Afternoon Tea and a cosy atmosphere. Thank you for all!
G. G.
Great tea, amazing coffee and a must try carrot cake and cream tea
C. L.
Sat in their lovely garden. Food nice. A little more pricey than some places. But an enjoyable lunch
G. M.
For a lovely place in a fantastic location. Every thing else was very average. My cake was a small slice and very dry. My coffee was tepid. Which was a terrible shame as the venue is fantastic.
s. c.
Very nice restaurant/cafe. Visited on many occasions. Scones are delicious. Nice outdoor seating area, not sure it'd be much good when it rains as several holes in the roof.
M.
Beautiful location, delicious food and good service
B. M.
Had a lovely afternoon here with friends from America, they wanted a hi tea and they were not disappointed it was lovely.
h. c.
Seating inside and out. Sign in to NHS app and sanitise hands on arrival or at your table. There are umbrellas over outside tables. Inside is fairly well spaced with both the entrance and exit doors, which are at opposite ends of the building, kept open to allow fresh air to flow through. Table service only. Very good selection on the lunch menu, plus usual selection of tasty cakes including gluten-free. Good assortment of wines, soft drinks and hot drinks. Also provided a high-chair for my great grandaughter
K. C.
Such a beautiful setting in the middle of Colchester but the food we had was disappointing. The poached eggs were hard. The bacon sandwich was literally just a sandwich and for £6.50 I think a few crisps wouldn't have gone amiss. The brownie was very dry so not a brownie at all. The rest was OK. Over priced. Such a shame
F. (.
Very relaxing atmosphere. They've done an awesome job architecturally, combining the old building with new bits. Cream tea is great and the coffee is good. Kid friendly. The toilets are clean and well kept. The staff's excellent and the garden's fantastic.
K. D.
I organised a Hen Do. We had the most gorgeous afternoon tea over lunch time. One of our party was dairy free and the care and attention that went into ensuring the food looked and tasted wonderful was first class. There was a real desire to ensure the diary free was as lovely as the other teas. The other afternoon teas were gorgeous with a very generous selection of food that tasted fantastic. We had such a generous selection we took several boxes of cakes for later in the day. The whole thing went really smoothly with wonderful service from the moment we arrived. We were seated in the far section of the tea room so we had plenty of space and privacy. The atmosphere and decor was lovely, just what I had hoped for the event. Highly recommended for a treat or special event. Thank you to Sheila and all the staff.
H.
This was a wonderful location with lovely tea and great scones. I wanted to but couldn't quite give 5 stars because while the scone was great it only came with butter not cream and they were very miserly with the jam. UPDATE: Have now been back a couple of times and the cream and jam issues have been resolved! Excellent scones with plenty of jam now! 😊
N. J.
Lovely setting and enjoyed our lunch. Service was good. This is one of my favourite spots for lunch!
s. o.
Just had drinks and cake here before outside but cakes and service was great and really organised for social distancing. Beautiful old building and nice garden, oasis from shopping streets. Could do with more sun umbrellas for all tables!
S. Y. L.
This place is very nice, beautiful and with very decent food at a fair price. It has its own seclusive area and garden. The place is done nicely with some unique feel to it.
It offers a good selection of what you can expect from a place like this and the food is prepared nicely. The only down point is occasionally the food lacks consistency between visits, sometimes it's really good sometimes it's average. Still very nice though.
C. H.
Went here with my mother for tea, had one of the tastiest chocolate cakes I'd ever had in my life and was pleasantly surprised by an Egyptian mint tea which I'd never had before. The staff were friendly and the building has great character. It's a lovely little quiet spot in the centre of town and I'd recommend it to anyone.
S. G.
Brilliant, what a fantastic building tucked away in Colchester of one of the lanes.
Discovered it by chance and so glad we did, the food was lovely and the staff very patient as I have a hearing problem and not always easy to communicate in tea rooms, restaurants etc.
We will definitely be back for more on our next visit to Colchester.
Highly recommend and worthy of more than 5 stars if they could be given.
Y. S.
I booked a room at Tymperleys for my daughter's Baby Shower. We had a private room upstairs andit was was beautiful. The staff were very helpful and attentive before and on the day. We had cream teas and it was reasonably priced and delicious. Would thoroughly recommend this venue.
S. B.
A lovely restaurant tucked away in the centre of Colchester. Had a very nice lunch and the dishes were unusual. Cakes were gorgeous. Very reasonable too and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. Will definately return.
S. C.
Had a lovely lunch with some special people, to me it all felt so civilised, calm and really nice food. Such a beautiful building, grew up coming to Colchester but have never actually spent time in here. Truly enjoyed it. 😁
J. W.
Ever since cafe rouge closed, have been looking for a restaurant to make a good eggs Benedict. Found one. Eggs done to perfection and a freshly made hollandaise sauce topped on salmon or bacon. Surprisingly, the bacon option is very good, excellent bacon. Will probably come here every Sunday for breakfast from now on.
T. S.
First class restaurant, staff are very attentive. Definitely worth more than 5 stars
B. M.
Had a fantastic lunch here a while back with my uncle. Really good food, and a vibrant atmosphere in a delightful setting. Probably the best meal I've ever had in Colchester.
P. B.
Wonderful mix of the quintessential British tea shop and the modern coffee hangout. The service was exceptional and only bettered by the lemon drizzle cake. An easy recommendation.
H. G. J.
Quite little setting in a lovely Tudor style building! Breakfasts and Lunch are tasty and well presented! Make sure it's not too busy as food can take a while to come!
R. S.
The food was good, but it took a long time to get to the table. Around 40 -45 minutes
T. M.
A very enjoyable meal, wonderful food and great service in very pleasant atmosphere will be recommending it.
S. S.
Beautiful location and restaurant, great food and coffee if a bit of a wait but they did apologise and explain which is fine. One member of staff was extremely polite, however a bit loud and intense which was almost off putting but we found humour in it... Maybe calm it down just a bit.
L. J.
Afternoon Tea was Ok but not worth £20 per head. Didn't have a full tea selection and the cakes were alright although the brownie was so dry. The scones were thick and stodgy which made chewing them really claggy. It's s shame as the service was great and the location is beautiful.
S. M.
Lovely, if a little pricey. Slightly above the ' average' place for either a coffee, afternoon tea or light lunch, so can forgive them this. Nice courtyard if the sun is shining.
S. C.
A quiet oasis with a super pot of tea and suitably sticky coffee and walnut cake. Great service within minutes and a gentle crowd having light lunches. Great for tourists as it is fully beamed and oldie worlrdie.
J. R.
Found this place by accident, but well worth a visit. Lovely decor inside and benefits from ample old world charm due to the restored building it is in. We had a great breakfast which was perfectly portioned and priced.
L. M.
Absolutely delicious breakfast. Best we have had in Colchester. This place is a hidden gem of our town and worth the visit of you are looking for somewhere decent to eat.
A. B.
Tons of Medieval character, nice teas and cakes. A bit more expensive than your average cafe, but is not your average cafe. Rooms available for hire as well.
N. C.
Very nice for a first lunch outing since March. Friendly staff, good food, good hygiene. Recommended.
C. w. S.
Friendly staff, always amazing food, great selection of tea, would recommend ANY of the cakes never had a bad meal at tymperleys
T. S.
Lovely food, great service. Highly recommend.
H. A.
Lovely restaurant in the centre of Colchester. Good menu, including a full roast, and some interesting specials. Excellent service and ambience.
D. D.
Hidden gem, building dates back to 1452. As we arrived later we did not eat but the menu and cakes looked fabulous.
Z. B.
It is a really lovely place to go for lunch, dinner and afternoon tea. And good quality service , it's also an old place as in it has beams inside it.
S. W.
Great location. We had a delightful brunch of eggs florentine, eggs Benedict and different coffees
C. H.
So nice to go back to Tymps and sit in their garden. Latte lovely but scone maybe 15 seconds in microwave, a tad hard....
S.
Really enjoyed the atmosphere! The food was great tasting and the ambiance was worth the little higher price. Very enjoyable.
R. T.
Lovely place for an afternoon tea, able to cater to dietary requirements. A lovely place for a smaller wedding, delicious food.

England’s oldest recorded town is also its oldest Roman city. With a history dating back almost 2000 years, it’s a wonder that more people don’t visit this north Essex town, an hour from London by train. When you’re ready to rest your legs, the town has plenty of cafés from which to choose, including the characterful Tymperleys, housed in a Tudor mansion.

Good place for celebrations: Tymperleys is a Tudor merchant house set in a walled garden in the centre of Colchester. Opening 8th May 2014 as a tearoom/restaurant and events venue. The building, started in the 1490s, derives its name from John Tymperley (d.1505) who served as a councillor and steward of the Duke of Norfolk’s holdings in Colchester and the surrounding area.
Rioja Winemaker Evening with Pedro Urbina: Bodegas Urbina Wines first came across the Colcheser Wine Company with the introduction of their delicious 1999 Seleccion to their portfolio, and Pedro’s tasting showed us that this exceptional quality runs throughout their range, from their Joven wines to their Gran Reservas.

Beautiful little place, both the building and the garden. A lovely place for a drink and but of cake with a view in the city.

L. P.
Lovely food and lovely setting in the heart of Colchester. Worth a visit. Lovely breakfasts too!
J. N.
Lovely venue, attentive and helpful staff but £9+ for a 3 inch square cibatta roll with a small round hole into which a very small goat's cheese was placed was very poor value.
