Went today at lunchtime, the restaurant is positioned just across the road from the cathedral. The decor and ambience was very good, we were greeted by a friendly waitress who seated us. We were given a menu and information re the menu choices. The food was amazing and presented well, we had the humous and bread, a whole chicken with chips and drinks. The chicken was cooked to perfection and full of flavours and the chips were lovely. Great food, great service, good location and all in all a great place.

I cannot believe how good their mutton tasted. Truly authentic taste; I can't recall the last time I experienced this despite thousands of mutton dishes eaten over 50 years. Remarkable! The prices are reasonable and the staff friendly and efficient. I'll go back there anytime in Derby.

Lovely food. Format is a bit like Nando's but you pay at the end. Prices are about the same too. No alcohol at these venues. Not a deal breaker. Would I come here again? YES!

We had a lovely lunch here today. We had the sharing platter and extra jollof rice. The hummus was the best I’ve ever had. The choice of sauces was a pleasant surprise too. THE AFRIKANA, and the mixed peri were my favourite. The staff are wonderful and very friendly and helpful. A member even came outside to ask if I wanted to see a menu as I was struggling to see the one outside as it was to high up for me to see while sit in my wheelchair. We’ll definitely be back. What a great place to eat our dinner at and near a great street location opposite the Cathedral. Lovely vibe, decor and atmosphere in restaurant. The menu was great with a good variety of choice and options. The customer service and staff were very friendly and polite. Starters and drinks came very quickly, hot, fresh and really tasty. The starter portion were very generous. Main came again in good time, look very presentable, fresh, hot and tasty. The YREN team members really enjoyed their dinner. We ordered hot drinks afterwards. Staff did not rush us and we felt relaxed while eating at our own pace.

Absolutely fantastic experience. I travelled around 20 miles to try Afrikaana with my wife and we were both blown away with the service. The food arrived very fast and was pipping hot just how it should be. The sauces they have available are amazing also the Jerk sauce was my favourite with the spicy mayo. The afrikaana chips were good with the coated spices on them. The lamb chops and grilled chicken were cooked to perfection.. I will definitely be coming back next week again!

A nice little place situated within minutes from the cities centre. When we went it was very quiet, what i did notice when we sat down it was very chilly in there it could of done with the heating switched on .The food was ok and portions size were could of been slightly bigger, i thought it was a little expensive for amount of food i had personally sorry .The staff were welcoming and the customer services was fantastic. Ordered take away from Afrikana for the first time to Chellaston! Food was fantastic, we ordered the meal called keep it like Kenya (something like that) included A whole Chicken, Wings, Lamb Chops and 4 extra sides. When the kids enjoyed it, that's a good sign! :-)

Excellent! Everything we ordered was exceptionally well cooked. I think the highest praise is serving dishes like bunny chow and curry goat to customers from the same origin as the dishes that taste as close as possible. Really worth the money, lovely service on top. No booze, but happy with byob.

Great meal here. I had the soulful chicken stew, quite spicy but very tasty. Wife had mutton curry that was delicious and my daughter who is vegetarian had halloumi burger which she liked and ate all of it, that’s unusual. So overall loved it!

A great cafe-style ambience with friendly staff and excellent food at reasonable prices. What's not to like? I can personally recommend the mutton(goat) curry with rice, roti and salad...a delicious plate of food. We popped in before a gig at the Flowerpot and the proximity and quick service made it an ideal choice.

The food and service we received tonight was brilliant. My oversized burger was very delicious, beef could be a bit less cooked for my liking but still full of flavour! Sweet potato fries greatly done, girlfriend was very happy from her goat meat dish too. Only 4 stars as ice cream could have more vanilla flavour to it, choc cake yummy though. How can you play afrobeats all day and think your bland 'jollof rice' would be acceptable. I beg you to please sort out your recipe. We ordered half chicken with chips. Cute little restaurant with seating inside and outside. Nice food, quick service. Not sure why the waiter was in joggers and tee though 🤷🏽‍♂️

Got recommended this place and was not disappointed! Good price, nice atmosphere and unbelievable flavours. Big dishes so watch out if you have a small stomach. Would recommend the cheesy chicken and rice dish, also the chicken flatbread (it’s got a kick to it!)

Visited with family. Excellent experience all round. We had some great burgers, the Afrikana fries are really tasty and the customer service was top notch, they couldn't do enough for us. It was very busy with a great atmosphere. For dessert, the chocolate cake was divine. Highly recommend this restaurant - give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Visited this place on a whim whilst out shopping Menu looked interesting and we were quickly seated to a table It wasn’t very busy but there seemed a lot of staff on at the time I ordered the goat curry ( which is actually mutton) and a fish goujon side We also ordered soft drinks Food arrived quickly and was generally very nice although the goujons had been overcooked a little The curry does have bones in being mutton but it was very tasty The only downside was the general service We received the wrong drink which was eventually rectified but then appeared on the bill later and staff didn’t seem sure how to amend this at first We weren’t asked at any point during the meal if all was ok and no one came over until we had finished but there seemed to be staff stood around over by the kitchen just chatting We left and again no one thanked us for coming The lack of detail in the customer service did let the place down sadly but the food was generally good

Lovely place to enjoy a meal! Great location with a beautiful view of the Cathedral Quarter. Food was 10/10. Service was quick despite the busy restaurant. We had the Rotisserie Chicken which was saucy and cooked to perfection. The Ethiopian Sea Platter had chops and some of the best wings i've tried! The Boneless Banquet Platter was also a crowd pleaser! For drinks the Afrikana Fruit Punch is a must. Overall, service and food were both great and I will definitely be back again to try more!

The food was amazing! Unfortunately, the service really let this place down. We stacked our plates to allow waitresses to collect them, they was left on our table for a large amount of time. We asked one of the waitresses to clear the table, she took a few plates and left the rest. We was left waiting for our order for a long period of time whilst staff was standing around, a waitress eventually came to us and asked what we was waiting for and clear the table properly.

The food was really nice. I was very impressed with the service from BRENDON. He made our experience delightful. I came with my family for my daughters birthday on the 11th of August. The food was pretty good, the chicken and lamb chops were tasty and we really enjoyed the Mac & cheese and fries. However, the order arrived 45 mins after Uber Eats said which was disappointing and when we called to check on the order they were quite abrupt on the phone and hung up on us as soon as they said it was on its way (which I’m not sure it was at that point!). A little bit of good customer service goes a long way.

I think the shop looked amazing inside and out 😍 The prices for the portion was steep👀 If your hungry its not a place to go, kids portions are bigger. 😂 For example nandos style chicken, mash, veg and sweet patatoe fries for kids £5 Smallest butterfly chicken, I've seen sweet potatoe fries for £9 I had to order some rice with it, to fill me up😫 The passion fruit mocktail was nice😍 And coke or any fuzzy drinks comes in small glass bottles for 1.95👀 Over all I would probably pay £1 more for a half a chicken 🙄 Service was slow, I had to get up and ask to be served.

Visited Afrikana for the first time and I wasn't disappointed. The restaurant was very busy but the service was still spot on. The food was similar to nandos, only much better and such a good selection - they do grilled chicken, burgers, lamb, ribs, prawns, fish and goat curry. Everything was hot and cooked fresh - the curry in particular was melt-in-the-mouth good! The owner took time to ask how our meal was which was really nice. I think once it's been open for a little while and the staff get settled in it will be even better!

This Restaurant was recommended to me by a relative living in Derby. At first I was a-little unsure. We were with my mother who is wheelchair bound & has mental health issues etc. But then we looked at the menu online ... too good to resist. Had to go. Went there in the evening, friendly atmosphere, very nice ambience, busy place. Friendly staff. Hats off to the Manager who had time for everyone. And the food was ultimately delicious. Well worth it if you’re a spice fan. You can always have the spice levels adjusted upon ordering & giving your preferences. A good variety of food to suit everyone. Very enjoyable food indeed, even my Mum who doesn’t normally eat her evening meal enjoyed the food. I highly recommend this place & wish for a Chain to open in Greater London. Completely forgot to take pics I was so caught up in everything else! Sorry!

Really great, tasty food. But not great service. Too many tables, which meant poor service. Bring own alcohol (great idea) but also remember to bring bottle opener, as they don't own one. Had to ask to move as we needed to put our coats on because we were sat infront of the doors on a table only just big enough for drinks never mind food. Stick with the chicken and you can do worse for sure, the chicken was pretty spot on. Non chicken dishes leave a lot to be imagined, food can also be over seasoned and on the dry side. Ate with a big table so plenty of good was served. The service needed some work, nothing malicious in it just an all round lack of experience. Had about four different people come to our table and didn't get a single name. Overall, if you want some quality chicken dishes check it out, if you want a steak sandwich there are greener pastures my friends.

Service was a bit slow but they explained that 2 of the waiting staff had called in sick. Food was amazing. We shared 3 starters of halloumi sticks, chicken strips and the peri prawns. All were really nice but be warned, the prawns are quite spicy. Fine for us but maybe too spicy for some. We then shared 3 mains of half a chicken, the chicken with Afrikaans sauce covered in cheese and the goat curry. All was really nice but the goat curry was one of the best I've had in ages. First time I went there tonight, Ordered Lamb chops X 2 and Fries, best tasting lamb chops I have ever had.. By far.. And I have had lamb chops from lots of restaurants. Only downside they were very small, however the flavour made up.. Staff were nice and attentive, Eventhough it was packed In there, I have read other negative reviews on here, and I know where some points are coming from, the main reason behind these minor faults is because the premises isn't big enough for the business.. That is the main reason behind some of the negatives, be rest assured food is good, I didn't try other food, I would never order "Cheese Is all she said", way to sweet, no need for the warm HP sauce on the food, Goat curry was also decent. Food was on point and even when my sister asked for her's to be reheated she was provided with a fresh plate of food and extra food with a smile.
