Reviews of The Cottonworks Bistro

Had dinner on the outdoor patio and it was lovely! The prices are extremely affordable for very creative, interesting dishes - comparable to stuff you might find at Michelin modern cuisine spot. They were understaffed so service was a bit slow, but perhaps they didn’t plan to be fully seated on a Wednesday night. The server recommended two delicious small plates - chicken parfait and mussels - and a great dessert (egg tart + rhubarb sorbet). Plus a beer, all together was less than £30.

Excellent food, lovely atmosphere, the staff couldn't have been more helpful. Not sure on the choice of music for a Sunday lunchtime! (The mushroom soup was astoundingly good.)

Really good. Wine choices good, food choices off the set menu were good and great value

Absolutely fabulous and cosy place with honestly pleasant and friendly people from the staff. Food was perfectly cooked. Coffee there is a brilliant, can’t describe in words. Would definitely recommend to others.

The place was amazing both inside and out, there were stunning views from the windows especially the cannooists going past, however I didn't rate the food it was basic. Unsure whether or not this was because the food was from a set menu for a large party of guests but I didn't enjoy it. My main consisted of a chicken breast which had grissle and fat, one roast potato and 3 asparagus. The brownie was hard and clearly had been stood for a while. I would visit again though.

A really good meal overall. You were welcomed in through some old wooden doors and you walked into a really nice classy bar and dining area. There was disturbingly loud music which was a little annoying. £23pp is a good price for the 2 courses I had it was a quality meal. I had the roast beef and Pannacotta for desert.
I would definitely recommend this place but if you do visit parking is limited and it is really small roads that lead to the restraunt

Firstly Lovely hidden gem..! Set just off the river bank..lovely outdoor seating for warmer days..kept the old cotton works look as it was ..rustic yet very cosy ..cracking ladies bar & table staff..the coffee is to die for ..absolutely beautiful..I.m a coffee lover & this is up there in my top 2 ! We shared a fire ovened pizza ..with chorizo jam n mozzarella..n chicken thigh ..lovely ..we only found this 2 week ago n this is my 2nd visit ..love the vibe ..not too busy at 12 midday ..little bit of parking nearby but very tight ..there is ample parking 2 min walk away this side of the river ..polite n curtious staff ..Great for dog walkers or coffee n lunch meet ups ..

Gorgeous hidden gem in Derby, a little inaccessible but worth the effort. Beautifully set by the river, uber cool interior, friendly, efficient staff and stunning food! Wish every restaurant was as good 👌💯👏

The most loveliest of places to have brunch, lunch and dinner! We had a wonder time as a family of 3. The Sunday Roasts are the best in Derby (we've eaten at quite a few places) highly recommend and will be back to explore the wine bar (I think owned by the same people but don't judge me on that!)

The service was friendly and light hearted. The coffee was absolutely spectacular. The cakes were succulent and moist. The brie, grape and chutney panini was incredible. But the best of all? The water was supreme. Just cold enough, with the perfect amount of ice. Top tier aqua.
If you want coffee done right, the Cottonworks is the place for you.

Great location.
Lovely staff.
Fast and helpful service.
Fantastic food and really lovely cakes! They do some great cocktails too! :)

Lovely indoor venue with character to complement the summer terrace.
Wonderful and tasty Christmas lunch menu and full menu served by friendly staff. No apparent lowering of standards due to Christmas.
Well worth a visit for the food on offer.

Wonderful food, the best cocktails and amazing customer service - the team simply couldn't do enough for you. Keep up the good work, can't wait to come back next time.

A pleasurable cafe to visit, lovely warm welcome in an atmospheric building. The food is freshly prepared and great wines on offer, thoroughly recommend the Pinot Noir. Definitely returning a.s.a.p.
B. H.
Beautifully done dishes, excellent quality! Portions are a bit small though.

Perfect for the summer, riverside dining, lovely food and drink in a nice peaceful location.

Expensive for what is cheese on toast(pizza) but very nice and great fries.
R. S.
Menu wasn't as I saw on the Web, tapas, cooked meals, pizzas, cheese board/baked camembert.
We shared a lovely pizza then we had puds which were a bit expensive, some of the menu was autumn themed: bonfire hot choc etc. My coconut rice pud was served with toffee apple ice cream and scattered toasted almonds which looked like fallen autumn leaves on it.
Option to sit out by the river. Lovely staff. I will def go again.

I love sitting here by the river, but it's a bid odd, breakfast finishes at 11, lunch starts at 12. Only cake in between which I can't eat, means it's important to get my timing right. I always forget. Lovely coffee though and good service

Cosy, welcoming and warm, apart from the lovely menu and delicious food (and they cater for vegans!) The service is excellent, the chef is excellent and the ambiance wonderful. Highly recommended.
H. L.
Brilliant, tasty fresh food (and incredible coffee and cocktails!) in an idyllic location with unobtrusive service. Beautiful outside on the Riverbank in the sunshine, great atmosphere inside on a rainy day. Highly recommended.

Really nice cafe. Very pleasant and peaceful location. Service can be a bit slow, but if you are not in a hurry then it's worth the wait.
Staff members are nice and helpful.
Overall I would recommend this place.

First class food. We had a nice selection of small plates. Excellent flavours. Thornbridge beers on tap which was a nice bonus. Lovely outside seating by the river if the weather is nice. Highly recommended.

Absolutely amazing food at reasonable prices for the quality.
The staff have the fine balance between friendliness and over familiarity spot on creating and warm relaxing atmosphere to leisurely enjoy a wonderful dining experience.

Really fabulous Bistro.
Friendly, helpful staff, great location and wonderful food

Lovely spot by the river, we've been several times for brunch and lunch (also the Bistro for dinner!). We find the menu choices varied and well priced - these guys put quality and provenance above cheap prices and huge portions which is what we value too. You can see that in their supplier choices from the coffee to the hot chocolate to the meat to the wine - all excellent, high quality stuff. If you haven't tried it yet I thoroughly recommend it - the buttermilk chicken wings with dill fries and chilli jam are AMAZING and only £8. GO!

What can I say?!!! The welcome was casual and warm which is something I love. I'm not keen on this modern "Hi guys" that so many places use these days so it was nice NOT to hear that!! Service was very professional yet friendly and the starter, main, sweet and coffee was outstanding. We will definitely be going again and again. Loved every minute.

Great place, great positioning by the river, excellent service and delicious food: thumbs up to the tapas style but come on guys, this would be a 5 star if you didn't have the policy of not even serving nibbles such as olives when the kitchen is closed... Britain often really doesn't get what continental Europe has understood forever!
A. G.
Amazing place - so lucky to have this in the area!
Nice industrial styling that’s inkeeping with the surroundings. Warm & welcoming with great food to boot. Fantastic coffee too, probably the best I’ve had in Derby.
Can’t wait to come back and try the evening menu, but the baguette & chips I had for lunch were on point!
Cheers guys

Visited here with some friends recently. Really good, flavoursome food and a great vibe. The staff ensured that social distancing and covid precautions were followed.

A nice cafe tucked away among the Darely Abbey Mills. Excellent service with a laidback atmosphere.
S. G.
Lovely setting and staff but a long wait and no salad with the lunch as advertised on the menu. Also just a fork to eat a ciabatta !! Then the garage at the back started moving classic cars about which were quite smelly with exhaust fumes.
J. H.
Great addition to the derby cafe culture and sorely needed in Darley Abbey. Cleverly retaining the industrial heritage you can imagine these thriving cotton mills in their heyday without having to break a sweat.
As befits this business’s bar and restaurant heritage the barista coffee, and, equally the excellent leaf teas, are of excellent quality with a great choice of milks to suit all tastes.

Nice place, friendly staff, good drinks 😊

Love this place. Lovely informal, relaxed feel but with delicious food and brilliant coffee. The outside space is considered and plenty of it. Well worth a visit.

Lovely coffee and a great lunch menu. Love the industrial decor which suits Darley Abbey Mills perfectly. Pleased that dogs aren’t allowed 👍🏻 Lots of luck to you, looking forward to coming along in the evening to your Bistro.
H. K.
Genuinely delicious food. It is the best restaurant in Derby by a mile
P. C.
Looked lovely inside, delightful staff and bacon sandwich good according to my mate. We've added it to our usual cycling stops!

A nice little hidden gem, tucked away behind Darley Abbey mills.Next to the Shed.

Amazing, food was amazing and service was excellent,
W. M.
Lovely little bistro hidden away in the Mills and right next to the river. Beautifully decorated in a rustic style, the food is delicious and can't wait to return for more food - perfect ambience for those wanted to chill and glad it's not another chain of starbucks. Not many places nowadays allow dogs, but they do have a seated area just outside - or you can take your coffee and baguette away with you.

We visited it in the evening when it's a restaurant. Tasty food and drink. Good friendly service.
S. B.
Not the best but quite nice. Food was alright but slightly overpriced. To much salt used for my taste but everyone is different...
M. S.
Courteous staff. Prompt service. Great coffee.
B. W.
Lovely little bistro with tapas style eating. Great riverside seeing, too
J. G.
Lovely place and meal but struggled with meals arriving at different times not what I expected for the prices they charge
L. N.
Tapas style lunch plates and pizza in a rustic setting. Could have done with a little more choice on the little plates and dessert menus. If you didn't want sticky toffee pudding or ice cream you were out of luck. My Serrano ham, focaccia and olive tapenade were excellent, as was the bottle of Picpoul de Pinet. The pizza looked good too. It's not a cheap venue but if you like quality in a relaxed setting then give it a try.
J. M.
Lovely place for coffee, lunch (or dinner) in a fab heritage location.
