Reviews of Chapters of Durham Tea Rooms
D. M.
Interesting experience.
Sat outside. There was a lot of seating upstairs, however the place is really warm and although some of the windows opened there was not enough blow through.
Given a coffee in a cracked mug (crack down the side of the cup), took it back and was given another coffee poured from the first crack cup!
Very delayed in waiting for the tables drink order, no awareness of what the table had ordered when the food came out and wait staff unsure of what there were carrying to the table!
Ran out of knives on the table and when in to ask for spares, was asked what for!
Okay food, limited chorizo in my “chorizo hash”.
Quite expensive.
I. M.
Excellent place for a spot to eat a drink, sat in a window seat so I could people watch, delicious food and amazing coffee, when I come back to Durham I'm bringing my partner,
Excellent service throughout my lunch
S. L.
My other half, Sue (who is in an electric wheelchair) and I stumbled across this place, as many of the other cafes didn't have wheelchair access. The staff who greeted us (I think his name was Liam) was very friendly, and he moved the chair so Sue could get to the table. He gave us plenty of time to read the menu, and took our order when we were ready.
I had poached egg, mushrooms and toast, and Sue ordered a breakfast (available all day). She asked for something specific with her breakfast, and this was no problem. The food was great - especially the nice, thick toast which was gorgeous, and we were only slightly let down by the eggs, which were a little tasteless. Otherwise, it was great!
The food on offer caters for different tastes (even vegan options, including the gorgeous looking cakes). The prices were quite good for a cafe in the middle of Durham. The decor is quite rustic, and the only other let down was that the toilets are up the stairs on the first floor (no good for Sue). Other than those points, definitely recommended!

Great food here and came quite quick. I can't really complain about the service as everything came quickly but did feel a bit like the number on the table, if we needed anything else, salt, we had to go back to the counter as we didn't see anyone until we left. when asked for water they literally must have just turned the tap on and filled the glass, it was a red hot day too! Still giving 5 stars as food was fantastic and probably go back
M. A.
Lovely experience. All staff very helpful and friendly. Food was excellent and prices fabulous. Would definitely recommend a visit. The cakes looked amazing but just couldn't fit one in!!
B. T.
Food excellent, ate from breakfast menu.stayes quite sometime chatting after meal as catching up with friends and not pushed to leave even though over lunch time although not that busy as weekday afternoon don't know if had been weekend when few more people might have been wanting g to dine
S. J.
Great service, very friendly staff. I had the breakfast with a poached egg which was overcooked but they did allow me to have my beans cold (as I prefer them) will definitely go back when we go to Durham again 😍
G.
had breakfast today....tasty, good value but some items on the plate were tepid at best.....you gotta expect food to be served hot...😕
S. H.
Staff always very friendly. The coffee is always lovely and the make cinammon toast especially for us. We call in whenever we are in Durham.
S. R.
Friendly staff lovely scone and coffee. Husband had good sandwich would call again
F. F.
I go at least one a week and I am always treated politely. Nice family owned business.
G. B.
Ahhh yes, I came here just the other day (Friday 6th Augustus MMXXI) and certainly had a nice experience after a long walk around Durham. During our shelter from the rain inside the café, I very much enjoyed my coffee and this peanut and chocolate cake (pictured), another bonus being the friendly staff who were also very helpful. If you are passing, bless yourself with a 15 minutes in this fine café!
M. G.
Great staff, great coffee and a great deal on two peanut butter stack cakes
A. D.
They have some delicious vegan cakes.
J. B.
Pleasant lunch - staff were very helpful in charging my phone when it went flat when I was trying to contact my partner who was elsewhere on the City. Full marks for going above and beyond!
A. R.
Genuinely incredible. You haven’t experienced life until you try that grilled cheese sandwich. Probably the best thing that’s ever happened to me ever.
R. L. M.
Fantastic cafe with grate food coffee and lovely staff. Would highly recommend.
D. T.
Wow. What a delightful experience! In desperate need of a pick-me-up on a grizzly Thursday morning, I strolled into this fine establishment and nervously mumbled that I'd never had coffee before and was looking for some help. The delightful staff behind the counter then talked me through the ideal starter coffee for beginners (a mocca by the way) and before you could say 'coffee bean' a silky smooth coffee was staring me in the face. I hungrily gulped it down and felt instantly refreshed, although that may have just been from the staff's wide smiles! Many thanks all and I wish you the best of success for the future!
K. G.
I had a veggie breakfast here and they made the effort to make it a bit more special than just the usual stuff. The food was tasty, staff were helpful and friendly, and the location was great. I'd return to try other things on the menu!
H. D.
Good food, and a nice dinner was had - avocado on toast for me & the chicken & bacon sandwich for my friend. Food was served quickly and the staff were very polite.
C. S.
Not sure what its for. Tried to get breakfast & coffee at 8.30 and it was closed. Tried to get cuppa and a cake at 4.20 and they wouldn't serve me because it was just closing
D. W.
Lovely place to come for a coffee or an afternoon cup of tea. Cakes are great and customer service is also good. Would be five stars but place is not at all wheelchair friendly, so good only for outside visit but not really for inside.
N. K.
Very cute atmosphere, with a nice variety of vegan options.
G. A.
Excellent place for breakfast with very tasty savoury menu options, and equally decent drink offerings, plus fantastic cakes if you desire something sweet to start your day really well ! Also worth mentioning the friendly and helpful staff. Dog friendly too.
B. D.
Delicious food, friendly service, fair price, good range of veggie options.
D. R.
Best coffee in Durham... lovely attentive staff and a great spot on Elvet!
I. B.
Best cafe ever. Love the coffee and brownies
M. W.
Love coming here food fantastic friendly staff but struggled to find a table at first due to students taking up seating areas for hours with only one cup of coffee/tea... to do their studying, one girl in there didn't even buy anything just brought her own drink. Think you should do a maximum of one hour per table at busy times. Sorry to moan ...
C. R.
Nice place with nice cakes, but nothing special.
R. A.
Great atmosphere! Food is great, and the staff are prompt yet not very friendly. Great to meet a friend for a catch-up.
G. J.
We were in Durham just having a day out and had a bite to eat and a drink £5 for a hot drink and a Bacon Brioche was one hell of a bargain, a really full Bun and a nice pot of tea served by really nice attentive staff made the visit enjoyable. We had to sit outside due to covid restrictions but the waiter was out straight away putting up the umbrellas and ensuring everyone was dry.
Cakes inside looked nice , only issue is being in Durham and not in Middlesbrough but would definitely use again and easily recommend to friends going to Durham.
J. E.
I had a wrap there for a tenner and it wasn't even that nice. Burger was average too. Cake looks nice and service was good. Server gave me detailed description of coffee to milk ratios. But payment was also confusing... BOTH TIMES (could be clearer). Thanks (Love la=cuy BAyKer x)
C. G.
Was in the area today waiting while my daughter was attending a course. I had work to do so I was looking for a cafe and came across Chapters. In the end I was there for 4 hours! Lovely relaxed atmosphere and staff were very friendly, more than happy with me sitting at a table, one waitress even waited with my laptop etc while I went through to the counter to order more coffee. Lovely carrot cake too.
c. o.
Nice food, with a varied menu, though it's a little impersonal
M. C.
Lovely place with a good menu to choose from. Friendly staff and delicious food, will visit again when I'm next in Durham.
N. M. L.
Lovely food, friendly helpful staff
D. M.
Lots of unusual food to choose from as well as traditional.very clean toilets
D. W.
I recently did a course in customer service in durham and visited chapters, from the first visit they were friendly and continued to go above and beyond. Although they were more expansive than the usual big chains offering the same because the customer approach and extremely friendly srvice i preferred to to take my custome to them. Well done all of you keep being excellent.
D. B.
Good food. Very attentive staff.
M. H.
I am happy to report that the menu has a much more interesting range than most places in Durham. Duck and orange salad, grilled chicken burgers, and cinnamon toast arent things we normally get around here. I had the chicken burger and it was great. Artisan bread, fancy lettuce, the works. Also happy to report that the service was some of the best I have had in Durham. Really friendly, helpful, and quic
K. 9.
Great food and great service. Veggie brunch wrap was delicious.
A. H.
We normally are in Durham during the week and we try somewhere different for a coffee. We often walked past Chapters and decided today to give it a try. Nice welcome on entering told about seating and menu. Ordered at counter and our order was brought to the table..coffee, tea, & toast all very nice.
F. M.
Such friendly staff. Coffee is delicious.
M. E.
Great coffee and excellent food at a reasonable price, would especially recommend the roast beef hot sandwich and their flat white (although Flat White's across the road is superior). The service is 'pay at till' and a table number is required to eat in however coffee to go can be ordered directly. It is also cash only, so remember to grab some before heading in. There is a wide range of high quality cakes available and the location makes for great people-watching. Chapters is like a good book that you keep going back to for more.
D. R. M.
I understand the dilemma coffee shops have now. There must be a balance of customer flow and looking after your regulars (which in my opinion are the backbone to most small coffee establishments). This balance is almost entirely struck by the presence, or in this case, lack of electrical sockets (to charge appliances). I am a regular customer and have spent a fair bob or two in this establishment and when I sit down with my piping hot camomile tea and look at my appliances with what can only be described as a critical battery- I do expect to look across, down, up, wherever and see a vacant plug. Alas, I don't have a phone.
Also, the low beams are a threat to anyone who is over the size of 5'5.

Delicious and good value for money. Had avocado on toast and full English with coffees. Friendly staff, tidy and organised and clean :)
A. M.
Really lovely spot, and food was delicious. Staff were so accommodating and went out of their way to help and assist.
C. C.
Friendly staff, warming ambience, vibey music and a panoramic window seat to enjoy my cappuccino. Mario enjoyed his latte too. Light and milky. Perfect froth to coffee ratio.
b. b.
Best burger I've had in Durham. Juicy, pink pattie and beautiful home made chops and fresh salad. Worth 10 quid.
P. A.
Had great veggie breakfast
J. G.
Great food, but mixed experience. Sadly went for breakfast but they had stopped serving. The hours of breakfast service were not printed on the menus or visible anywhere.
Hawaiian sandwich was to die for, though.
P. D.
Excellent food, friendly staff and lovely atmosphere.
T. W.
Lovely place in a lovely location! A very pleasant atmosphere, with calming music. Coffee brought to the table - a needed pick me up! Will be back soon
S. B.
Friendly atmosphere with dog friendly areas. Food on the stodgy side but tasty.
L. W.
This is my favourite place for breakfast when I'm in Durham! Cheap, quick and delicious. Only thing is every time I go I ask for marmite and they never have it..... I wish they had marmite haha
P. H.
If you like a strong coffee then I think this is the best in Durham.
J. S.
Food quite nice but very crowded due to Durham open day. Table staff very efficient and courteous but guy on the till needs to be more pleasant to all customers rather than curt with some and gushing over others!
D. B.
Always make for this venue when in Durham
, Good food and drinks in a relaxed atmosphere
P. C.
This is a must visit in the city centre.
Great menu. Fantastic food. The decor is lovely. Staff are pleasant. I visit every trip.

L. I.

T. H.
A absolutely gorgeous location right by the River Wear; some beautiful flora and fauna on display inside; and a lovely place to have a coffee with friends and family.
P. R.
Nice food. But only given 3 stars since the coffee is the usual disappointingly average UK stuff
J. S.
Lovely coffee house, fast service and very spacious. The Flat White I had was excellent and it was a nice atmosphere
h. p.
Gorgeous food and lovely friendly staff. But the boss is a stinge who works his staff to the bone for terrible pay. Suprised he has anyone left working for him
K. H.
Lovely staff, nice place to sit, really central location. Bread could have been nicer though, wasnt that fresh
G. H.
Dropped in for breakfast with two others. Three different orders, all very tasty. And the staff were friendly. We would happily go back.
M.
Came here just for a quick drink. Cosy place but felt a little odd having to find a table number before being served instead of waiting at the till to order (for a cafe)
H.
Lovely cafe! Great central location, relaxed vibes and delicious cooked breakfast. Many thanks!
M. D.
Lucy - Exceptional customer service!
That’s all I need to say, oh yea and spot on sausages ❤️

This was our first visit here and we were very pleased with the choice, quality and service. Right in the heart of Durham, this is a lovely location near the river.
A. S.
Great, quirky, tea rooms. Spread over three (or four possibly) floors. Awesome sausage sandwich!!
J. R.

L. A.
I've been here for a tea with my girl, so we take "afternoon tea for two" with sandwiches and cookies. It was very very good!!
V. C.
Very quirky place with lots of character, with many levels and nooks and crannies. Well located in the city centre and reasonably priced.
M. L.
Good location and pleasant environment, spoilt by indifferent staff and limited menu. Should also change the ordering method of ordering at the till if they are trying to be a classier establishment.
R. D.
Good breakfast and quality. Reasonable price. Vanessa was brilliant and friendly. Highly recommended.

Great food, but somewhat slow service and an obnoxiously loud staff room door

Disappointing bacon and egg sandwich. Bacon under done and very salty. Usually really good.
