Reviews of Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill Durham

The dining room in the old shire building is a stunning location. The food on this occasion didn't live up to the surroundings. Two fillet steaks one was fine the other was chewy and full of sinu and was returned. Nice biting of wine however to wash it down. After dinner drinks were nice in the adjoining bar. Same was let down by the food on this occasion.

Highly recommend if you are staying in the hotel or are celebrating a special occasion. The food was sublime and my partner said her steak was the best she’s ever had. The service was great. Not as costly as you might expect either. I recommend Alex James Blue Monday cheese he’s come a long way since his Blur days.

Heck, we paid enough for his education so why not a pounds more! Frankly a terrific meal. I had a smoked salmon starter followed by a lamb dish. All excellent and lovely ambiance. Lovely to see so many other parens with sharing a special dinner with their children, all dreaming of the day that they'll pay for their own dinner one day! Honestly, lovely time.

Fantastic place. Gorgeous afternoon tea and super friendly and helpful staff. Cocktails were superb highly recommended
Will definitely return.

Staff were delightful. Unfortunately the food left something to be desired. Beetroot/feta starter consisted of sliced beetroot with barely a crumble of feta. Macaroni Cheese must have been left in the oven forever as it was hard baked on the top.

I thoroughly enjoyed my recent visit to the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse in Durham. I went for a Sunday lunch and not only was the food great but the staff were fantastic also. They were very welcoming, friendly and attentive which isn't too common nowadays. The setting is lovely too. Well worth a visit and some deals can be had online :)
J. F.
Had a wonderful Sunday lunch today. Our server was Lewis and what a fine young man he is. Polite, friendly and attentive. We love MPW Durham.
L. H.
Sunday lunch is excellent- good choice of meats (and vegetarian) with fresh and imaginative vegetables, all served by friend,y and attentive staff. Beautiful surroundings too

We went for lunch, which was given to us as a gift. 3 course. The food was good, our steaks were well cooked. Bread shouldn't be an extra cost in my opinion, especially if your having soup(this came with 2 small slices croutons floating in it, which my partner found off putting)The cheese plate was ample, but would have been better if the waiter had said or the cheeses were described in some way so you knew what they were. Lovely building very tastefully refurbished. Would recommend and hopefully be back on the future
S. D.
Amazing food, we both had steak cooked to perfection. Ambience was very relaxed and our waiter James was warm and friendly. Management pulled out all the stops for our special anniversary. Cannot recommend highly enough
R. B.
Absolutely delicious food; high quality and good sized portions. Service prompt and friendly too
J. R.
Loved it
Celebrated our Pearl Wedding Anniversary and My Birthday there service and food excellent
I will remember this for a long while #memories

Nice food and a lovely atmosphere - would be a good place for a romantic date. Staff were friendly and efficient. We did think it was a *little" overpriced but I suppose you're paying for the name and the location as much as anything...

We visited the resteraunt on the 11th May, and we were overwhelmed by the place tge food and above all the service. One of our party was celiac and had specific dietary requirements, the staff were really accommodating even tweaking the menu just for her. Would definately return again - great location right in the centre of Durham. Highly recomended!!

The good: lovely dining room, the old Durham Shire Hall Council Chamber in the Indigo Hotel Conversion. The bad: it's nothing special with a limited menu, supposedly a steakhouse, the ugly:not with good steak. We had to send both of ours from the set menu back,as they failed the basics of even being cuttable. The replacements were ok and we got a free pud each in compensation. The next table had the same problem.
This lets down a very good hotel otherwise. Has Marco ever checked in? Staff friendly though!. Social distancing fine

First impressions, beautiful old building with wonderful original architectural features. We entered by a foyer with an ornate ceiling and tile clad walls. As it's the Christmas season a twinkling Christmas tree in the corner. On into the bar area. Really good drinks menu, hubby chose a pint of cask ale while I enjoyed a glass of champagne, well it us nearly Christmas! We were welcomed into the restaurant by a delightful front of house manager and introduced to our server Saff. We had pre purchased an 'itison' voucher so was presented with the 'festive' lunch menu. The voucher covers the three course food menu but you can opt for extras which we did and had the fresh bread and olives as an extra. For the food we both opted for the same for a three courses. Duck rillette for starters followed by sea bass as mains then plum pudding and brandy sauce to finish. We also ordered a side of fries with our main which really weren't needed but the menu didn't mention there was mash included in the dish, but that is the only criticism and if that the only fault then I'm happy and it certainly didn't detract from a very nice lunch. We also ordered drinks with our meal, hubby having wine and me gin. Couldn't resist the cocktail menu as a finale to a most enjoyable experience, Boulivardier for my other half and blood and sand for me. Both delicious. Our first time here but can recommend and will return when next in Durham.

Great service and food in a pretty amazing venue

Had a wonderful lunch. Staff were very attentive and food tasted amazing.
T. E.
Fabulous service and excellent food had a groupon offer ....well worth it....tables are very small, had to shuffle items around and remove water jug and glasses...
S.
Amazing atmosphere, amazing food. Felt looked after from start to finish with the staff at the front desk and also our amazing waiter Tom. Tom really made sure everything was perfect and made our Valentine’s Day meal special. Will definitely be returning back. Best restaurant experience me and my partner have had in a while. Thanks to you all!
A. N.
Beautiful evening, went for my partner's so they sat us at one of the best seats. Great service and amazing food would love to go every night!
D. C.
Enjoyed a lovely meal as part of the Indigo Hotel Dinner, Bed and Breakfast offer. However, I was very disappointed when settling my account that there were 'extra' service charges. I'd already given the waiter a tip, but then find buried in the the small print is a service charge of 12.5%. As a customer at the hotel I had to ask for an itemised breakdown of the restaurant bill as one wasn't forthcoming. An expected bill of £179, rose to £230 when drinks, supplementaries and this discretionary 'service charge' was added. How can it be discretionary, when you don't know about it - unless you take a magnifying glass to the menu
Not happy :-(

We attended this beautiful hotel last night and ate in Marco Pierre white grill. From start to finish, the whole experience was fantastic. Attentitive and friendly staff throughout the evening. The food was amazing and the cocktails to follow just as good. We have recommended this place to all our friends and we will be back. Enjoyed a couple of jokes with our waiter about the description of the food. Had the escalope of pork and surf and turf fillet steak. Go, you won’t be disappointed.

Absolutely fabulous meal in Marco Pierre White steakhouse tonight. Wonderful ambience, impeccable service and fantastic food. The latter combined with a lovely professional and friendly receptionist in The Indigo Hotel this is where I will spend my next break in Durham.
M. d.
Waiting staff and location were lovely but food disappointingly average. I had the Sunday lunch menu with family and whilst nothing was unpleasant it all tasted a bit like pub food, slices of Hovis alongside the prawn cocktail, granule gravy and lots of food that simply felt as if it had been prepared long in advance rather than freshly cooked. All in all less than I was expecting from the Marco Pierre White name, if admittedly in a great setting.
K. H.
Very disappointing.
I expected much more from a restaurant associated with such a high calibre chef.
Expensive.
You will get better quality and better value within 5 minutes walk, just over the bridge.
This was the first day open after lock down, which might explain things a little (but a restaurant I visited the very next day needed no such excuses and was simply excellent, so why not Marco Pierre White's too?).
Service was slow. The waitress was unfamiliar with the menu and the expensive wine list (why aren't there any sub £20 wines)? Order was taken. Followed 10 mins later by bread. Followed by the waitress coming back to ask what wine did we order! Wine arrived (Bruno the wine waiter was pleasant and chatty and clearly glad to be back at work). Eventually some very ordinary steak arrived. Not at all flavoursome.
As I said disappointing.

Good steakhouse in a beautiful location. Good food and wine plus nice service. Not cheap but a very pleasant meal for a night out.
G. B.
Sumptuous food, Brilliant ambience with an old world charm feel
A. B.
Lovely setting, took my wife for a treat, beautiful food, we both really enjoyed it! Nicest Macaroni Cheese I have ever had!
J. B.
Had an amazing night celebrating our 40th anniversary. The food was amazing best fillet steak I've ever had and James gave us excellent service.
j. f.
Fabulous. Lovely cosy ambience in the restaurant, even tho it's quite huge. Attentive and helpful waiting staff and meal was cooked to perfection with perfect burger for the husband and delicious tender lamb for myself. Shared dessert of blueberry cheesecake was gorgeous. All well presented and delicious with excellent wine list too. Will definitely return.
S. L.
Afternoon tea was wonderful. Lovely experience. Staff were helpful and friendly. My allergy was catered for and I was made to feel so safe. Highly recommended
C. W.
Nice location, the main restaurant is a really beautiful room and the seating arrangement is great. The starters came out really quickly and our waiter was very polite. I had scallops and she had baked camembert, we were both impressed. The mains came out, we both had the 10oz sirloin, she had hers medium and I opted for rare. We both got the mushrooms in garlic butter. The steak its self was nice, it wasn't world beating but it was nice. She complained it was tough but maybe it was just the way it was cooked? We were both a bit perplexed by the mushroom sauce, it wasn't really a sauce. The chips on both were good. The person I assumed to be the head waitress came and collected our plates and asked if we wanted the desert menu, I said yes please. We waited nearly 30 minutes and still no desert menu. In the end we just got the bill and left. Now, we were using a £100 voucher I received as a Christmas gift. We had spent £105 so i used £5 of my own money. If they had brought the desert menu promptly then this would be a 4 star review and they might have had some extra money from me in their till. Nice starters, mains were a bit middle of the road especially considering the price on the bill. Not very impressed and I felt like I should've been. Lord knows how the people using their actual money felt! I would go back to give it another chance but only if I had another voucher. It would be 2 stars if I had actually paid for what I got. Service needs to be improved, it started well but the consistency wasn't there.
p. w.
Lovely surroundings, great staff, good food. Loved it, thank you
L. N.
We stayed at Hotel Indigo and decided to give this place a try. One of the best steaks and lamb dishes I've had. Lovely atmosphere and cocktails. We received great service from all the staff but just wanted to highlight our waitress, Kirsty. You made the dinner even more special with your attitude and kindness. Can' wait to come back!
K. M.
Incredibly average and disappointing for the price. Had way nicer steaks at cheaper places. Wine menu was extremely limited and dessert wasn't anything special either.
h. w.
Beautiful building and restaurant. Attended for festive afternoon tea which was very disappointing.
Horrible white sliced bread. Poor sandwiches and cakes were not great resemblant to those frozen ones from Costco. Would come back for lunch or dinner but not the afternoon tea. Much better elsewhere I'm afraid.
S. H.
We came today to celebrate fathers day.
The food and service was exceptional this was our first visit to this restaurant,we will certainly be back. Thank you so much staff are fantastic
I. C.
The restaurant has very good customer service but sadly the food is not of the same standard.
K. A.
Got a groupon voucher for a 3 course lunch for 2, only £26.50 and what a bargain!
Stunning decor, good service and always amazing food!
My partner and I both had the soup to start, served with fresh warm bread. Followed pan roasted chicken breast for our main, this was served with chantonay carrots, green beans, roast potatoes and gravy. Chicken was cooked and seasoned perfectly, veg was nice just the right amount of gravy.
Dessert was baked cheesecake with fruit compote for my partner which he thoroughly enjoyed and I had the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream, absolutely delicious! Definately my favourite restaurant by far
m. v.
We called in for a drink last night with friends. Enjoyed a few cocktails and some snacks. Was very grateful to Katherine, one of the members of staff for chasing us down the street when one if the guys left their phones. Thank you Katherine! Will definitely return soon.
T. N.
Food here was phenomenal. Probably the best steak I've had. Their customer service was second to none. The waiter (Dan) was very friendly and attentive but not overly so which was very pleasant.
T. A.
Great place to eat, lovely building, had a fantastic time and the food was scrumdiddlyumcious! I wish I could remember the name of the lady who served us, it was a couple of months ago now, but she was very attentive without being overbearing as you can find in some places, but she was friendly, helpful, courteous, informative and very polite, just superb. The best service we've had in a long time. Thank you to all.
j. l.
Visited with a friend to celebrate her birthday and we were both stunned when waitress brought ONE glass of presseco on the house! How very tight of a restaurant of this calibre, could understand if there was a few of us but just two, it would not have broke the bank. Disappointed.
S. E.
The food was certainly if very good quality although the desert choices were limited. It's disappointing that all of the staff wear face masks. Will eat here again when they get back to normal.
G. M.
We had a lovely Sunday lunch here with my brother and sister-in-law really enjoyed it, however the parking needs to be looked at as if you go over 2 hours after having paid ,£5 at reception you will receive a fine of £100 pounds however the hotel is sorting this out.
I. T.
A nice treat on a rainy afternoon. Food good and service was with a smile. I'd certainly go again
D. J. M.
Had wonderful food and wine here over a year ago.. Little disappointed that no new offers have come my way since my first experience there... Oh well...
P. F.
Great setting but let down by expensive and average food and service. Would recommend making a short walk for a great range of excellent independent restaurants
G. N.
A little bit special experience here. Great service. Good food, cooked & presented well. A real nice setting in the round, high ceiling room. Excellent lunch.
B. L.
Really enjoyed the food here. Staff were great too.
B. A.
Beautiful building, decor is amazing, ambience is great, staff fab (with a Durham accent) food very good, sometimes have to wait a tadge too long between courses, but we'll worth it. Will return again and again.
L. S.
Lovely environment, staff extremely friendly and pleasant. Beautiful food.
P. W.
Really nice place! Great food and nice atmosphere👌 I will defo visit again soon.
M. V.
Ruth our waitress was really good and very friendly but sparkling wine could have been chilled more and there were no hand towells in toilets to dry your hands .The food was probably worth only the price charged and not full menus price .They make it up on the price of the drinks .Atmosphere was fine
S. H.
Another great night and meal at the Steakhouse, the jazz night and singer from the balcony a great miss. Highly recommend.
N. D.
Lovely staff and decent wine but steak was poorly cut and cooked, and burger was very average. Not the higher end establishment it’s trying to be.
S. K.
Outstanding food, drink and service in beautiful surroundings. Ideal for a special occasion. Highly recommended.

A. r.
NICE place if you have not been well worth the trip just for the decor you will not have see wood panelling anywhere like it Food as good and wine do not expect to get much change out of 200 pounds for two people
E. O.
Beautiful food- slightly overpriced as expected. But we really enjoyed it and the building is stunning.

Well I'm surprised Marco has put his name to this Restaurant.
The duck was so overcooked it could have been a rubber toy for my dog. Simply awful.
Champagne was served warm at £18 a glass!
I wouldn't expect my local pub to have been so poor, at least they know to serve beer cold.
Sorry, very disappointed.
Upset as this was supposed to have been a special occasion.
