Reviews of Shaheens Indian
S. L.
Great family run restaurant with
lovely atmosphere and very friendly staff.
Food was delicious with wide choice for vegetarians.
The owner offered useful advice on range of dishes to suit customer preferences.
Fabulous rose ice cream!

I ordered for home delivery but knew already that the food would be good.
In my opinion this is the best Indian restaurant in Durham. The food seems a lot more authentic and if my Indian friend rates it - what more can I say!
N. W.
Dine in meal: Service excellent. Food just how we asked for. Chicken sag, lamb Madras medium heat. Chilli naan, pilau rice & plain naan. The poppadoms were fresh & the sauces were fab. (especially the lime pickle). Would recommend if you're in Durham. Note to those ordering take away. Some food does not travel well (bread goes soggy & oil will separate in complex sauces when food not straight from pot) Get a sit down 😁

What a find, first time in the restaurant.
Traditional food and awesome flavours.
Fantastic service from the staff, really polite and very very helpful.
R. B.
I’m fussy about Indian food as it never tastes like ‘family’ food. But this was really nice. Also struck by friendly staff. Would definitely go back.

So this Indian restaurant has been here 36 years and this is the first time we'd even heard about it. This is a more traditional style indian restaurant, very authentic indian dishes, not the normal Bangladesh style most are used to. I ordered the Lamb Tikka Massala and I didnt really like mine as not what I was expecting. However the staff were amazing! I said I wasn't enjoying it. Not that it wasn't nice as it was but it just wasn't what i wanted. They asked me exactly what kind of curry I wanted, flavour, colour, spicy or sweet and then said they'd get the chef to make it up for me. First a sample came to try and it was spot on. So they gave me another full curry and rice to take away. Absolutely amazing service. I would definitely recommend but just be careful that the dishes might not he exactly what you expect.

The most amazing place to eat!
Not only is the food amazing, but the staff are so welcoming!
Adam the waiter, is really friendly, caring and attentive. And has an awesome beard!
I've never felt so welcomed in a restaurant! The sevice and food are perfect and i would recommend to anyone!
See you soon!
R. T.
Really tasty food and the best service, recommend for dinner in Durham! Had the veggie massala
W. L.
A pleasant surprise tucked away in the old heart of Durham just a stones throw from the Cathedral. The food was amazing and up there with the best I’ve ever tasted and the prices are excellent too. The atmosphere and decor nice and the staff very polite & attentive. You’ll be hard pushed to find a better Indian restaurant than this. We are from Edinburgh which has some very good Indian restaurants but this is as good as any I’ve ever tried at much better prices. The onion bajee was spectacular and the lamb Madras was quality.
P. R.
Had a takeaway from here it was tasty but expensive and needed warming up. I enjoyed it but I’ve had better elsewhere.
L. R.
Delicious food, friendly service and pleasant atmosphere. Highly recommend for special night out or celebration.
B.
Excellent food, very helpful server who knew the choices very well. Fresh ingredients definitely, nothing swimming in grease like some places.
k. l.
The best Authentic Indian Restaurant fabulous food Staff excellent if your in the area do not miss it 10/10
M. A.
Very cosy little restaurant, the decor is very tasteful. The staff were spot on, taking the time to tweak our order so that we all had the perfect balance of flavour and heat; can tell they know their dishes and want everyone to enjoy them.
The food is very reasonably priced especially considering the quality and flavour.
Will absolutley be back, can't fault the place.
S. W.
Second time here on visiting Durham and even better than the first time. My veggie dupiaza was the best curry I have EVER had and I only went vegetarian in January! Daughter's vegan choice was phenomenal, and hard to please husband was completely won over with his chicken tikka. A cacophony of tastes! We will be back.
B. F.
Wow! Just wow! I am not a fan of Indian food as I usually find it too greasy. I loved every dish at this restaurant! The chef took our order herself and made adjustments to some of the dishes for us. All the servers (all family) were a complete delight and ensured we were well looked after. We will definitely be back!
G. B.
Great food and friendly helpful staff. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
L. K.
Wow, what can I say...after not booking on a Friday they accommodated us beautifully. Food good sized portions and absolutely hands down the best Indian meal had. Stunning food. Staff amazingly friendly too and thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Clean, nice decor, nothing negative to say and cannot see why not 5 out of 5. Highly recommend.
P. B.
Full of awesome authentic flavour. One of the best I’ve ever had. The staff were great, informative and friendly. Highly recommend if you’re in Durham for a night out. We’ll be back.
S. M.
The best curry we have had in ages. Really fresh ingredients and service was excellent
M. M.
Great food and excellent service. The servers are friendly, well-humoured and genuinely interested in making sure each dish is served to expectations. I've never been offered different levels of spice for each curry before, and it shows an attention to detail.
The end result was a big meal that 6 people were all very happy with. Great work!
M. T.
Great food and service, was served by this young man named Tan a very friendly waiter who made sure our needs were met. Would definitely go again.
D. P.
Found the place by chance when walking in Durham and decided to give it a go.
The waiter spent time asking us how we would like the food prepared and Without doubt it was the best Indian food i have ever tasted.
We knew it was going to be special when we tasted the pickles and mint sauce with the poppadoms and it just got better when the mains arrived.
Having looked at the reviews since everybody appears to agree with me.
A. Q.
There were 4 of us and got 4 dishes and shared between us. Chicken sag was delicious.
A. A.
Had a lovely time , great service and excellent food. Our waiter Adam was especially nice and knew the menu very well. Would recommend !
A. M.
Top draw curry in a small, busy restaurant in old Durham. Service was pretty lacking however.
R. B.
Had a lovely meal there tonight. Fantastic freshly made food, so many choices for all dietary requirements. Meat, veggie, vegan, nut allergy, lactose intolerant everything they've got an option for. Amazingly friendly service too makes you want to go back immediately. Definitely recommend
N.
Fantastic meal with wonderful staff. Truly delicious Indian food. As a severe nut allergy sufferer I was assured that virtually nothing had nuts in (bar an ice cream and 1 rice variety) and I was free to have anything on the menu without concern. Without question will be going back again and again.
A. S.
Delicious home cooking. Great service.
C. C.
My wife and I have just returned to base camp after a cracking meal at Shaheens in Durham. Delicate yet flavoursome is how I would describe both our dishes and anyone coming here to eat will be in for a treat. But the real stars are the staff. The service was beyond reproach and if I could give them more stars I would. Plus the fact that anywhere that gives my wife extra chocolate mints at the end of the meal is on to a winner!
t. j.
Terrific. Excellent dishes and service. We really enjoyed it.
C. M.
We tried Shaheens for a change to our normal indian restaurant last night. We were very impressed & enjoyed the food. The staff were very friendly & service was excellent. We will definitely be back. 👍
J.
Great restaurant with lovely food, good portion size and friendly staff. Undoubtedly the best in Durham!
M. A.
My wife and I had our first anniversary meal here. Small, family restaurant, nice atmosphere and staff very friendly and attentive. We were asked very specifically how we wanted our curries to be cooked, and both were delicious. The poppadoms were very nice and fresh, and the onion bhaji we had to start with was the best we've had (and we've had lots). Would highly recommend.
R. S.
The best! If we lived in Durham, we would eat here all the time. They had the most delicious, flavourful curries, fluffiest naan, and exquisite gulab jamun to finish it all off. We will definitely be back the next time we're in Durham!
P.S. The waiter, who is one of the owner's sons, mentioned that he has a severe nut allergy so they don't use nuts in anything. Not an issue for me personally, but I suspect finding a safe place to eat out can be very challenging if you have a nut allergy, so if that is you this is probably the place to be!
E. B.
I cannot recommend Shaheens highly enough. Fantastic service from start to finish. Our first time here, the chef cooked an off menu butter chicken for my daughter, and the waiter spent time giving us recommendations. Food was absolutely delicious and staff checked regularly everything was okay. Felt completely COVID secure. Finally it was excellent value. I'm so glad we picked here to eat out!
G. W.
Great food using fresh ingredients, good service.
C. T.
The whole experience was fantastic. When booking the table staff were so friendly couldn't be more helpful. The food was fantastic and price was affordable. The staff were so friendly throughout our visit. Overall I would 100% recommend this restaurant.
K. M.
From outside this looks like a standard indian restaurant and the menu reads similarly unexceptional. But don't be deterred by that. The food is of the highest standard and the nearest to true indian food as eaten at home that I have ever found in an Indian restaurant in the UK. It is served with a courtesy and charm which made me feel I was back in Kashmir.
S.
Absolutely delicious curries, I had the Shaheen Special Balti Chicken Tikka which was brilliant. It is a family owned business and the waiter is really nice. If you are in Durham, you have to come here, this must be some of the best curry I've ever had!
c. h.
Used this place during covid and had excellent food so thought would try the Restaurant. The starter of chicken chat was excellent but the size of the main courses were very disappointing. Shame as the Service and quality were excellent
T. W.
Top-notch cuisine from the Indian sub-continent expertly prepared and sumptuously presented by people who really love what they do. Friendly staff create a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere and are happy to offer guidance and recommendations if required. Excellent veg*n options and accommodated my companions nut allergy without fuss or compromise. It's a shame that I can only give this review 5 stars - I could easily stick a couple more on. Excellent.
J. G. Á.
The best place in Durham to enjoy your meal! The quality of the food is amazing. One can tell that there is an enormous effort in every single dish. The flavour and quality of the food is authentic and unique. Not only is the food wonderful but the staff is really friendly and helpful. If you do not really know where to eat, I honestly recommend you to stop by and enjoy your meal!!
i. w.
Four of us went to Shaheens last night, the Meal and hospitality we received was first class. None of us had eaten inside the Restaurant before, although my wife and I have had many takeaways while been in lockdown. Mrs Carne, and her Son Adam Own the Restaurant and do go out of their way to make you really welcome. I can honestly say this is by far the best Indian food any of us had taisted before, and it won't be too long before we eat there again..
E. M.
Amazing food, so tasty, will go back
A. R.
I really enjoyed my meal here last night. My wife had a chicken tikka masala which was like I remember from childhood. For some reason since then the said fish has returned into a bright red bowl of sugar so it was really fantastic to taste an authentic recipe.
My dhansak was likewise a much more authentic recipe than most places with lentils and pieces of fruit to sweeten rather than loads of sugar the heart was just right for me
The service was good too. A proper family affair, a proper job.
Thank you so much
S. C.
I ordered 2 curries and coriander rice via uber eats (chicken saag and vegetable korma). The curries arrived hot and fresh. Whilst the flavours of the curries were good, there were very little vegetables in the vegetable korma and a very small serving of the coriander rice. The curries were also on the oily side. The chicken saag was flavoursome but again I would have liked a bit more chicken. The aubergine baji was good. Overall experience was average - a little on the expensive side for the amount of food you get.
S. A.
Worked all day so starving, found this place by accident but was not disappointed, food was piping hot and very fresh and flavoursome, also the waiter was very friendly and professional, and we felt it made him happy to see his customers having a nice time. The lady chef introduced herself to us and to see if we were enjoying and we were, would definitely recommend this restaurant for the while experience. Keep up the good work.
J. E.
What an amazing experience. A true family run business for 30 years. The owner really took the time to tailor our dining experience and recommend dishes to what we liked. More than happy to allow us to order off menu and also talk about the cooking process.
I had a chicken tikka madras which I highly recommend followed up with a real mango Lassi - I really hope to visit again soon!
Z. H.
It has been 18 years since me and my partner visited this curry house and now I'm thinking that was a huge mistake. We don't get date nights often, but when we do we will be back. The food here is authentic fresh and tasty and the service was unparalleled. The young man serving was very friendly and polite and worked hard to make sure everyone was happy. I would highly recommend.
W. B.
I had a lovely evening. I however left my jacket in the restaurant and travelled down to the south of England the next day. The staff were very helpful and posted it to me the next day.
B. D.
Best meal since New Delhi in the late 80's. 100% authentic and freshly prepared. Highly recommended
N. K.
We had a fantastic meal here. Curries were perfectly spiced and very fresh, the peshwari naan was utterly delicious. Really recommend the rose kulfi too. Couldn't fault any aspect of the meal to be honest. Really friendly service, quick without feeling rushed. And I was very impressed with the Covid measures taken - waiters in PPE, careful entry procedures and good spacing between tables. But nothing felt intrusive. Very good value even without the Eat Out to Help Out scheme - but with it, it was an absolute bargain. A must visit when in Durham!
A. C.
We were here last night. The food was amazing, I had all my usual favourites but they have never tasted this good, for a very reasonable price. We have had a lovely time in Durham, but would go back just for this restaurant alone! The staff were lovely too, great service
D. L.
Amazing! First time back here in over 20 years. Food was beautiful and service was absolutely top notch. We will be returning!!
L. L.
One of the best Indians I've ever had. I could've had the rice on its own it was so good. Will definitely visit next time I'm in Durham
L. W.
Came here with my husband on Saturday night and had a lovely night couldn't fault a thing. We were served by a lovely lad called Adam ( I asked him his name so I could write this) who couldn't do enough for us, service was quick he was friendly polite and courteous and he even done my husband a special spice curry. Hats off to the chef I've been to lots of Indian places and this was far best the best sagg I've tasted. Will definitely be returning
D. J.
What a gem of a place the food was absolutely amazing as was the staff and to top it off the cook the owner came out from the kitchen to see if everything was okay. The next time we visit Durham we will definitely be calling back thank you all at Shaheens for making our visit a one to remember
A. A.
Fabulous food, favouring flavour over heat. If you would like it hotter just ask, but try and taste their dishes first.
A. W.
Fantastic little find!..Food was amazing and plentiful and staff brillant so friendly nothing too much trouble will definitely be going back next time I am in Durham 😊
J. C. M. B.
Good portions, no mistakes, tasty food. The best first experience trying Indian food I could ever have!
K. J.
Absolutely amazing food and was prepared faster than in most rsturants. Never tasted anything this good. The staff are very polite and are always checking if you are alright and happy with your meal and never have to get up and ask the staff for anything as they are always asking if there is anything else that I need. 10/10 would go again.
G.
Excellent service and delicious food. Would highly recommend the fish pathia and lamb dopiaza (cooked to preferred spice/heat). Try and sit at table 4.
T. T.
Small gem serving really great Indian food at very reasonable price. The wine was over priced but the service was friendly, yet professional.
E. T.
Fantastic food and friendly staff who could not be more attentive in this family run resteraunt. The re-furb looks amazing. Absolutely recommend to anyone looking for a lovely Indian resteraunt!
S. W.
What a place! Tucked away at the top of North Bailey this place is easily missed. However, if you're in Durham City and in the market for an Indian pass on the rest and find this place....well worth it.
The food isn't your usual 'Indian' it authentic Kashmiri and absolutely delicious. I've tried dozens of Indians across the North East and this place is up with the best.
Edit: visited it again this week (03/09/19) and was just as impressed again.
F. S. P. O.
After many months of not being able to visit, I can safely say Shaheen's is still by far the best option to eat a curry in Durham. The attention from the staff is above and beyond, and that goes for the food as well. They have taken so all the necessary measures to make customers feel safe and comfortable in this new 'normal', which is an amazing effort on their behalf. If you're in Durham, or even just quickly passing and want a good meal, do stop here.
H. B.
Visited Shaheens last night for the 1st time. The staff (Mother and Son) were great.I was advised on what would be the best meal for me and have to say,the food was outstanding. Loved our whole experience of this lovely restaurant. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back .
J. W.
Fantastic food, fabulous informed and enthusiastic staff. If you enjoy Indian food please don't miss this restaurant if you are in Durham. All round great experience and very safe.
E. G.
CONSISTENTLY AMAZING. I've tried a lot of curry places during my time in Durham, but the quality at Shaheens is just on a different level. No competition.
L. B.
Myself and my family thoroughly enjoyed our takeaway meal last night, the dishes were contemporary and full of wonderful flavours. We cant wait to dine in the restaurant when lockdown ends.
W. J.
Truly outstanding service and food. We first visited back in February and we were wowed by the skill in customer service of Adham the manager. This was matched by the quality of the traditional food served from his mother in the kitchen. A return visit for our anniversary in July cemented our favour with Shaheens as Adham once again greeted us, and not only remembered us but what we had enjoyed on our previous visit. Our thirs visit tonight saw us introduce our young children to Indian cuisine, not a small feat with a daughter with serious nut allergies. We were reassured by Adham that the food would be nut free and as a family we were delighted to be able to relax and enjoy fantastic indian food in our now favourite restaurant!!! Thank you again to Adham and the family.
G. A.
Brilliant food and service! If there's a better Indian restaurant in the area tell me about it . Shaheens is very definitely the best I know.
M. C.
Fantastic food. Good service
K. J.
Great Indian food and a fantastic friendly atmosphere. The staff were friendly and attentive, and able to make spot-on recommendations. Really good value for money too.
G. B.
Good cooked with family love is how ai will describe this place! Warm, welcoming and with sumptuous food! Loved every bite of it! The Biryani, the lamb, the paranthas, Dal, Palak paneer, raita- Yumm food!!
C. B.
Lovely restaurant, family owned and run (Dad cooking, son waitering). Being on my own while on a business trip, I was made to feel very welcome. Great food - really fresh and flavoursome. Would definitely recommend it.
J. H.
Absolutely fantastic. Not just one of the best curries I've ever had but possibly one of the best meals I've ever had. Can not fault this restaurant. Food and service are exceptional.
C. H.
Amazing night at this place, and the food was I can't describe how good it was would highly recommend. All the staff were extremely helpful and pleasant. When I am next in Durham I will visit again.
L. H.
Enjoyed a great meal here tonight. Fantastic service, really tasty mains, and just a lovely environment. A great family run business. Highly reccomend!
D. S.
Lovely family indian restaurant. A very warm and friendly welcome attentive service with the waiter happy to assist and make recommendations on the menu. Good tasty food all round. Would visit again 👍👍
D. T.
Excellent food, lovingly prepared. Family run. Chef took the time to come and chat to us afterwards which was a really nice, friendly touch.
R. L.
Amazing experience from the beginning,
the staff were amazing. Not a single fault from the
food, highly recommend the tandoori sizzling platter. 100%
will be returning.
H.
Really fantastic family run Indian restaurant. I don't think I've ever had better service. Adham was so friendly but professional and is a real credit to the restaurant. The food is fantastic, good portions and very tasty. You've got to have a lassi and their peshwari naan. Definitely going to be our local!
I. D.
Poosibly the best Indian restaurant I've ever been too only surpassed by its great customer service!
If you get a chance to go don't miss out!
Brilliant!
P. H.
Good-quality food, with the different spices easily distinguishable, and cooked in the style of traditional home cooking, by a single female cook who knows what she's doing. Adam, the owner, is very friendly and hospitable.
F. B.
Great food and very helpful waiters who were happy to point out which dishes were vegan. Plenty to choose from!
O. W.
Stunning food and exceptionally friendly and welcoming staff. There is obviously a huge amount of love and care goes into their cooking. Highly recommended.
F. P.
Very good food, fantastic atmosphere and great service. Would recommend both if you're a student looking for a nice, chilled out evening with friends, or if you're inviting parents over or if you have a date.
J. M.
Just delicious! Wish I still lived here! Staff lovely and food...wow.
Student waiter, what a pleasure x
S. B.
Everything about this place is amazing! Our first visit but not the last! Adam is tremendous host and the food/choices just out of this world!
E. L.
Never knew how many dishes were on a Indian menu! So much variety but I had to be boring and go with the masalaa which was really flavoursome. My partner had the dopiaza and enjoyed it, service was good and would return to shaheens.
J. M.
Really good food, staff were great.
You can tell its family ran as the atmosphere is really comfortable.
Definitely recommend 5* best Indian in town!
A. F.
What a great find! Shaheens is very comfortable, with personal service and excellent food. I can't say enough about the food. Fresh, delicious, with a huge variety. At Shaheens I even tried Naans that I've never had before - wow!
The clientele at Shaheens ranges from couples and local families to large student sports groups and University research groups and more. Everyone is clearly welcome. Very family-friendly place!
R. B.
The service was really polite and friendly, but as a group we weren't very impressed with the food. The naan breads felt like they need particular attention - the garlic naan was literally swimming in garlic butter, and the peshwari seemed like it was covered in condensed milk and grated coconut.
L. G.
Excellent food and made welcome by the staff, not rushed at any time
J. B.
Great food at a good price. Friendly, helpful staff. What's not to like? Will be back (very soon, I hope!).
D. K.
This is undoubtedly the best Indian restaurant I have been to outside of india! Absolutely 100% authentic. The owner/chef and all the staff were friendly and professional. I will be frequenting this restaurant a lot.
R. B.
Amazing wee restaurant, family run, traditional home-cooked food! We stumbled accross this place on a busy Saturday night and it was a wee slice of heaven. Currently having our leftovers for breakfast :)
P. R.
Little gem hidden away in Durham near the Cathedral, made to feel very welcome by front of house. Home cooked Kashmiri cuisine was bang on and is competitively priced, I would recommend and we will be going back.
L. K.
Really good Indian restaurant, tasty food and friendly service. I would recommend to everyone and definitely come back in the future.
N. G.
Hands down the best Indian I’ve had. Been here a few times now and always receive great service.
T. B.
What a lovely friendly restaurant, food cooked to individual tastes. Highly recommended. Will definitely be returning. Thanks guys x
