Reviews of Browns Edinburgh
M. M.
Beautiful surroundings and great service. Very disappointing food. I had the scrambled egg with salmon; it was poorly cooked, Luke warm, and tasteless.
The baked eggs were better. Coffee was fine, smoothie was fine. Nothing special for the price.
B. R.
Came here for a family dinner. The waiter was fantastic and attentive. He was also very good with a few of us who had specific requirements. The wine was really good and the food was hot. There was one issue with one of the dishes but this was resolved immediately (and to be fair, it was a fussy customer!). Would definitely recommend.
M.
Service and the restaurant decor was fantastic.
Our starters and desserts were superb including the calamari, scallops, sticky toffee pudding and chocolate trio.
The main courses though were a big let down. My wife who is a Coeliac had the GF pasta dish. The sauce was quite nice but the pasta had been really overcooked.
I had the chicken schnitzel expecting a nice thinly breaded piece of chicken. I got a breast butterflied in half. Thick and bland.
Shame.
C. M.
Delightful. Went out for Sunday dinner. Food was excellent. Cozy feel to restaurant which belies the size of it.
K. B.
We had a great meal here. The service was great, the tables were very well spaced out. The mains were very fantastic and the desert was amazing. Will definitely be back.

From the outside, Browns looks like a respectable and decent establishment, and the inside reflects that.
The service was lacking, however, with 6 people to serve our 3 courses (including the manager to sort out the wonky table)
The waiters were all well-mannered and respectful but I probably spent the same amount of time waiting for service as I did waiting for my food and eating it.
I also had to go indoors to get the service to pay the bill.
For starters, we both had the pan seared scallops with rhubarb - the scallops and rhubarb were all well cooked and each element tasted great, just not sure it goes well together.
For main, I went for the prawn and Devon crab linguine and my wife had the signature Browns burger. The burger and fries were a solid choice, but the linguine were lacking; the crab was shredded so fine, I almost forgot there was crab in there and the buttery sauce, which should have glazed the pasta and brought the flavour to the dish, was sagging at the bottom of the dish which I ended up enjoying with my wife's fries.
I did go for the Browns' dessert trio, as the signature dishes seemed like the only smart choice after my mains experience, and enjoyed the three mini desserts.
Would I recommend it? I doubt I'd go again, but I don't live near Edinburgh.
J.
really cheerful atmosphere, i felt so comfortable dining there and if i didn't feel full i wouldn't have left so soon.
i ate fish and chips, the fish was divine. however the chips were lacking but what made up for it was this bread (pictured) it was glorious! it comes out fresh and steaming and ready to be devoured.
i had an absolutely wonderful time and i will certainly be back. thank you ever so much.
c. m.
Delicious food at reasonable prices with excellent friendly service . All in smart , elegant surroundings.
L. B.
Had a great mothers day brunch! Service from Yilmaz was excellent! Great recommendations were made and a fab time was had by all

I don't generally eat out, even before the pandemic, as I try to save as many pennies as possible for rainy days. I was initially nervous when my group decided to go to Brown's, thinking I was going to be spending a lot for very little. Which is why I've never been so pleasantly surprised in my life that after the fantastic food, brilliant atmosphere and some of the best service I've ever experienced came to a price far lower than I expected! Would absolutely go again, and more importantly I can afford to!
C. S.
Good staff, perhaps family run as had that Italian hospitality. Although tired they served our unexpected large mix of friends & family well, split bills, no complaints. If it wasn't for the pub opposite being so bad- we'd never have found this lovely place.
E. G.
Excellent traditional breakfast, lovely place and atmosphere, staff very polite and quick service
P. -.
Lovely dinner with family, and the location is great, very central, nice atmosphere. I had my usual steak, and it was cooked perfectly. My husband tried the pork belly, and can highly recommend to try it as well.
Staff have been very polite and took care of us well. I do come back, as a nice treat.
C. B.
Only been here for drinks which were nice. Due to the covid restrictions was table service only and it did take some time for us to be noticed by waiting staff for a drink but the staff were friendly and brought our drinks quickly once ordered.
M. A. T.
One of my favourite places in Edinburgh to go for a fancy dinner.
Service from the whole team is outstanding, but I would like to mention Arturo in particular, he is such a great asset for this restaurant.
Food is delicious!
D. G.
Very nice atmosphere, great drinks and friendly service! We had the Rhubarb Hedgerow Bramble and a glass of Barossa, both absolutely delicious!
J. R.
Excellent meal and overall experience at Browns on Friday night. It is often all too easy easy to seek out the next new restaurant in Edinburgh or chase the next fashionable dining adventure. I have been to Browns before but not for a few years and I was very impressed by how good our experience was.
All of the food exceeded my expectations, the menu offered a good range of dishes, the range of wines was very good including an exceptional Hungarian desert wine. The service was quick and friendly - especially given how busy the restaurant was with Christmas celebrations. Well done Browns Edinburgh!
M. A.
I'd like to say a huge thank you to the Brown's Team for making my last week's visit great. Me, my wife and our friends had an amazing time here enjoying champagne, delicious food and a perfect service from Matty. We all look forward to coming back soon!
P. M.
nice interior and live music that creates relaxing and intriguing atmosphere. Menu is mix of meat and seafood primarily, including surf&turf. We liked cheese plate as starter, but I was a bit disappointed with my chorizo&octopus (it was a bit difficult to choose since didn't want neither steak nor salads). We're surprised by kids menu: 10 for two dishes and there was a choice.
C. W.
Truly excellent personable service by attentive, and not intrusive, people who really know how to make a person feel welcome.
This was our second visit, and on leaving booked for a late lunch later in the month.
Thank you again for a lovely warm welcome and delightful fresh food and drink.
C. F.
Seriously tasty food with friendly service, prepared to go the extra mile. A must go to for a great lunch with a good buzz and a very tempting drinks menu. Perennial Edinburgh favourite which never disappoints.
D. M.
Two opportunities to go to Browns on consecutive days - team lunch on Friday, and dinner with my daughter and good friend who had travelled up from Stratford Upon Avon on Saturday. First rate food, first rate service, good value - this is why it's my go to restaurant when I visit Edinburgh from Aberdeen. The person assigned to look after us was amazing ...looking forward to my next trip.
D. F.
A wonderful birthday treat for the fathers 64th! Karol simply made the visit... fantastic! He was so courteous with the dietary requirements needed😁
Y. C.
The service was really good and the food was amazing.
T. R.
These pictures where from before lockdown..A fabulous Christmas Day feast for my family with fantastic staff and tasty food with a lovely atmosphere
Last week I returned with a friend qnd it didn't disappoint was lovely food and the waited Adam recommended wine and was so kind and helpful
My work have decided we will go for Sunday lunch thanks again
S. E.
Lovely restaurant. Did a walkin with a party of 4 (two toddlers included) as we forgot to pre-book and we were still accepted. Kids friendly and the meal options are great for them too.
I had the burger and mojito which were delicious. Burger was filling and quite succulent.
I will definitely return.
K. P.
We had a large table booked and the food was fab. All delivered at the same time, was tasty and no problems. The staff were really friendly and were there if we wanted anything.
G. B.
Plates were cold so food didn't stay warm for long. Had to ask for a clean knife as water marked. Steak slightly over done. But food was nice, seasoned well. service was good. We did get a discount.
K. S.
The food was great and the service friendly. My only criticism would be that the live music was very loud and made it hard to have a conversation. We would have stayed later but the Scotrail reduced service meant we had to leave earlier
C. A.
Meal was lovely and value for money. Waiter was lovely and attentive . But got a big shock when the Bill came . As much as I asked for a bottle of Sauvignon blanc I didn’t expect to be given the most expensive bottle without choice. Next time I’ll know.
A. D.
Excellent experience. Food was tremendous and the waiter Yilmaz had knowledge, friendliness and humour in abundance. Would 100% recommend and will definitely be back!
G. H.
Lovely lunch here, on the pavement of George Street, watching the world go by. The sun was shining, a bottle of red wine and a first class beef burger cooked just how I like it. What more is there in life?
E. M.
Tue evening was my first visit to Browns, a convenient location for an after-work drink. The place looks great from the outside, but on entering there was no one at reception to show me to a table.. By the time someone came there were three parties waiting at the entrance, not a great start.
I the guy that showed us to the table was polite and sorted out the drinks menu. My friend joined me 5 minutes later. But trying to attract the bar/waiter staff was an ordeal. Two of them at the end of the bar chattering away together oblivious to the entire clientele. To be fair it was a slow night, not much happening but it wouldn't have hurt for them to look up now and again. I walked over to get there attention, no apology, just body language attitude. We stayed for a couple of hours, a few glasses of wine and a coffee.
When the bill arrived the waiter pointed out that the total included a discretionary 10% service charge. What service?
Resisted the temptation to say anything, like good British citizens we paid up, and walked out. Doubt very much if I'll be back and I wouldn't recommend it!
P.S. It's been about 10 days since writing this review and I've mentioned my experience to a few friends. Browns is a favourite venue of theirs and they think the service we received was uncharacteristic. My friends mostly visit for lunch and early afternoon when the place is buzzing. I've also been contacted by Browns management which indicates that they take their reputation seriously. I hope readers of my review will balance out my experience with other reviews and share their own experiences in due course.
M.
Had a nice meal here. The restaurant is decorated really nicely and provided a great atmosphere on a busy Friday night. Unfortunately we did have some issues with not reciving our drinks or having our food order taken half an hour after we placed it, however this was quickly sorted out. The food was excellent and apart from the issue at the start the service was good.
C. C.
Don't think we will go back. We went to Browns as I was given a gift voucher as a leaving present for work. I'm lactose intolerant and the waitress didn't really know what I could have on the menu. I felt a bit confused and just ordered steak as that was the easy option as she could not confirm what other dishes contained milk. She didn't seem bothered when I said it was an intolerance over an allergy. I don't have a milk allergy but a severe intolerance and would end up with stomach pain and diarrhea if I had milk. The food was quite pricey however was not up to standard. The fillet steak was chewy and burnt.
T. R.
Best meal I’ve had since I traveled here from hawaii. Yilmaz served me and I had a fantastic experience. If I could give higher than 5 stars I would. Great atmosphere and ever better service! Nice to feel the Aloha spirit so far from home <3
J. R.
Amazing cocktail menu & staff very friendly.
J. C.
Really great food and service! Recommended!
E. H.
Very nice environment n service prices accordingly with the city n up market surroundings. I had steak pie with guineas. My wife had fish n chips. Creme brulee. I had a peroni n a mojito cocktail. Wife had an Earl Grey tea. £64 defo go again
M. C.
Lovely staff and atmosphere, food was delicious!
F. A.
For my wife’s birthday meeting up with out Adult kids two in Edin one traveled from Glasgow
Good table fab service and excellent meal steaks were all great and we eat out a lot brat we have had for a while
S. N. S.
Fantastic service at browns this evening, our waiter Jean was fantastic. After our scallops weren’t to our liking we had fresh ones made along with the offer of a free desert. Absolutely amazing as usual!
D. B.
The food was OK but the atmosphere was very lovely with live jazz music. There was a hair in my food but the staff took it very seriously and immediately replaced my meal with care.
C. B.
Nice place, the atmosphere is lovely and the music is nice. Food is good although portions could be a bit more generous. We had the cooked breakfast, but the baked beans were only a few mouthfuls. Staff were very nice but disappeared after a while. We had to go to the bar in the end where they had all congregated to pay.
L. C.
Absolutely excellent service from waiter Jesus! Scallops were sooo good only thing I would not give 5 stars is there was no salt in the linguine but other than that excellent and returning soon x
T. F.
Fantastic meal came in not sure what to expect but was presently surprised starter good main course perfect finished off with great desert staff where totally on form be back soon 😀
C. F.
Went here on a Friday night as a walk in without a reservation as all other nearby restaurants were full. The food was average compared to other places at the same price. We tried the surf and turf and while the steak was good and cooked as requested it had not been allowed time to rest so was sitting in a pool of red liquid.
The turf part being lobster was awful, there was hardly any meat left so was either badly prepped or used in another dish. What was left was way overcooked and lacked taste.
Our table was in a corner by the window and due to a newly added decorative planter which the waitress told us all about in anger resulted in her having to pass us all the food and drinks from one side as she couldn't get round the table due to the planter blocking her way.
While we did eat most of the food, I described the meal afterwards as Wetherspoons food at a premium price!
B. D.
Browns is one of those restaurants that never disappoints. It doesn't seem to matter what I order, it's always delicious. This is the l reason I keep coming back.
C. C.
Me and my Partner went for breakfast. Very good service and food was beautiful. Will be visiting again.
A. K.
Good food in a nice setting. The restaurant has been renovated recently and now it looks great, it has a very welcoming atmosphere. The menu has options for everyone and the food is tasty. Great cocktails too! The staff is very friendly! Highly recommended!
X. S.
Loved the service, staff were very nice. My husband and I enjoyed our meals and drinks. Its also beautiful.
A. T.
Been here a few times including for my birthday dinner. Food has always been tasty, the place looks great and the staff are friendly. Can recommend!
D. R.
lovely setting and ambience, draws you in, staff polite and friendly with good menu knowledge, lunch menu excellent value and still great quality.
M. C.
Came with my wife for our wedding anniversary at the weekend on a trip to Edinburgh and was charmingly impressed by the service start to finish to mark a very special occasion. The restaurant is beautiful and the food was absolutely delightful. Special thank you to Emmy for squeezing us in on a great table for what was obviously a very busy weekend.
S. C.
Good atmosphere, lovely decor, delicious food, yummy desserts, service efficient and friendly.
M. N.
I've dined with an early evening lunch at my last day in Edinburgh, I felt very welcome and comfortable from friendly staffs, food are nice and recommend the dessert. Everything gives you a relax feeling, which is very nice.
M. M.
Fantastic service from Marcin, very attentive, explained the menu well and had a great sense of humour. Food was delicious and drinks very reasonably priced. Marcin is an asset to the business, thanks for a great night!
L. M.
Always excellent. Delicious lunch from the a la carte menu. Fixed price menu also looked good. Will be going back
M. O.
Great place for cocktails. Loved the vibe and the service. Definitely recommended!
F. F.
Lovely brunch, plenty of selection. We had eggs benedict, eggs royale & a salmon omelette, the food was excellent. Only disappointment was the pot of tea was only warm when it arrived and cooled quickly. It was quite busy, won't put me off going back.
G. K.
We hadn't visited Browns for years, we were not disappointed. Browns remains a lovely place to dine. The food was excellent.
K. M.
Lovely restaurant with great food and cocktails, our highlight however was the service from the Canadian waiter (I think the name was Jordan) - very kind and attentive.
P. C.
lovely meal with family, all enjoyed and service was quick and unintrusive
N. M.
Lovely place, very fancy and excellent food. Staff were superb highly recommend for any dining regardless of occasion.
R. A.
Took ages to be served. We were about to walk out as it had been over 15 minutes from sitting down. The food was okay but nothing special and we very much resented the tip being included in the price. The staff member didn't deserve it and we felt too embarrassed to ask for it to be removed. Won't be returning anytime soon.
W. M.
Beautiful restaurant.
Lovely lighting and atmosphere.
Friendly and efficient staff.
Relaxing background music. Starters were lovely.
Just felt the main dish let it down. Ribeye steak not the best and the chips were not 'homemade', resembled McDonald's, hence the reason I gave this 4 stars.
H. B.
Came here on a work trip a while ago and this restaurant is stunning! Was busy but still great service and lovely dishes!
S. B.
Amazing service from Yilmaz this afternoon at Browns Edinburgh ,we came for a mothers day celebration ,top service from a lovely guy, the baked Camembert was a hit, thank you for the recommendation.
H. M.
Food was nice but didn't have some things in stock. Waiter didn't seem bothered about serving us.
P. W.
Best pancake I have in the world.
Great service from Yilmaz, he’s amazing! Super super nice guy!
G.
Had Mothers Day lunch and it was delish! Served by Yilmaz who was very knowledgable and gave great advice on dishes. Really made our day. Thanks.
b. k.
Visited here with my fiancé for a romantic 3 course meal the staff was amazing looked after us and was very attentive, food was incredible! Will definitely be returning!
K. L.
Fabulous food and cocktails. Fast and efficient service by our lovley waiter Yilmaz. We will be back
C. O.
Superb food and a great atmosphere - this place has it all. We visited on a chilly Monday night when it was quite quiet but we found it all the more warm and welcoming for that. The wine was good and the after meal whiskey I had was top notch. I'd like to see a branch of this restaurant open up in North London. I'd be there every night!
J. M.
Lovely place to sit and relax in the spring sunshine. Staff are very helpful and attentive. Beer and wine where spot on
A. Y.
Just drinks tonight so cannot comment beyond that but nevertheless good service from nice attentive staff. Will go back and try the food.
A. G.
A busy Friday night in the run up to Christmas and despite this, the service, quality and preparation of the food was oustanding. Shows how well everyone involved is focussed on delivering high standards.
I often overlook Browns as a first choice on my list of places to eat, but I'll be visting again for sure.
A. A.
Very nice restaurant, excellent quality food, great service. Would definitely visit again
H. D.
Amazing service, fab food and cocktails. The only downside was being evacuated due to fire alarm and didn't have time for dessert.
E. S.
Enjoyed my lunch at Browns. Food was lovely and staff were friendly and helpful. Definitely will be back.
H.
It was the first time I've been to Browns and I am very impressed. It was peak lunch time, the place is 80% full and the staff was a little rushed.
Although rushed they were attentive, generally make eye contact, give them a sec to finish up and they are attending to you!
Polite and efficient!
Food portion was spot on! My partner and I had a main dish each and it was very satisfying.
I have not a bad word to say nor can I nit pick at all!
Thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Brown's!
F. G.
We had a hen party meal in here last night and the food and service was outstanding. Thank you. 😊
y. s.
The atmosphere food and service was amazing. Yilmaz was very attentive and nice.
J. S.
A perfect place for a high quality lunch at a very reasonable price, and with fast and attentive service.
H. S.
Went here for dinner with my family. Great service, lovely atmosphere and even better food! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed our meals from chateaubriand to salmon, every meal hit the mark! Will definitely be returning in the near future.
D. B.
Very nice atmosphere, polite table service, well priced and delicious food. With a visit
N. A.
Wonderful restaurant. We had a festive afternoon tea which was delicious. The service was excellent and friendly. Looking forward to a repeat visit the next time I'm in Edinburgh.
A. G.
Beautiful restaurant in a beautiful city. Food was, if I'm brutally honest, nothing special, but maybe that's just me being extra picky. What was very special was our server Paul--he was attentive, informative, welcoming and just an all-round great conversationalist--as well as being a superb waiter!! His kindness to my wife on an anniversary night that meant so much to us both (1 year since she was declared cancer-free) was something we'll long remember. Browns are lucky to have him on their staff.
M. N.
Friendly staff, great meal for the four of us, we ate the lot !!!.
B.
My husband and l came here for lunch as it was a gift for our wedding the day before, beautiful restaurant, our server was excellent and made our day feel special, food was absolutely delicious 😋 staff so friendly and we can't wait to return, thank you so much for the complimentary cocktail and glasses of presseco it was a lovely touch and very much appreciated....
c. n.
Has to be one of the most incredible city's in Europe by far. Full of history and is so easy to navigate and with its wide streets and trams it has every thing to wish for. The choice of food and the restaurants for me is the best I have ever encountered so far ever. I can't see another city matching to this experience.
M. B.
Food and festive atmosphere was excellent. Scallops we’re fantastic. Service was prompt given how busy it was with Christmas parties. Would highly recommend.
D. F.
Nice environment, good food, very helpful polite staff.
E. S.
Not the best Sunday Lunch compared to what we had last time here. Frozen Roast potatoes and different vegetables to what my husband had. Meat had been cooked on the griddle and not a carved joint of beef.
D. L.
Turned up half an hour early but was still seated. Waiter had a great sense of humour. Food was good. Good value for money.
C. J.
Lovely food and friendly, courteous staff. Could be a little more attentive though (seated for nearly 30 mins before someone took our first drinks order and that was only because we had to stop a passing staff member and ask them ). Other than that small initial issue, the rest of the service was good and food was great ! The restaurant was very clean , well laid out with good social distancing measures in place.
C. V.
We only had a starter and chips and it was presented very well to our table! The attention to detail when they served us was amazing. I can't give it a 5 as we never ate anything else but the customer service was amazing.
S. H.
Fabulous restaurant with great food. All staff very professional. Ingredients of high quality and prepared to high standards
C. C.
We decided to visit for lunch late afternoon on a Sunday, it was a sunny day so most people were sitting outside.
It was fairly quiet inside, but light and airy in the back room with a very impressive decor.
The menu choices were impressive, and it was difficult to choose. The food itself was a slight letdown, thankfully I’d added in extra prawns or my curry would have been lacking. My wife’s fish pie, although a substantial dish was mostly salmon and scallops should be changed to singular on the menu.
However the service was excellent along with the surroundings.
A. K.
Great place to eat food was very nice did have the statars very nice but on the small side but still very nice staff was very good and polite
I. M.
Highly recommended. Lovely discreet restaurant. Very good food and service.
N. W.
Nice variety on the menu, food very tasty, staff attentive & helpful, but £3.25 for a can of irn bru a bit hard to swallow....
T. C.
Nice atmosphere, good food and great well trained staff
N. Y.
Steak and Lobster was excellent, the service however was not. The waiter didnt bring our drinks until th meal was served and blamed the bar for being backed up. Never came back to check on us throughout the meal, had to ask other servers as they passed for drink refills and the bill.
S. A.
We stopped here for a dinner on our first night. The place is clean, well decorated and the food is very good. Service wise, Chole was our waitress and she was absolutely great !
A. D.
Amazing place to people watch when the sun is out. The Staff here work really hard to make your visit special. There was some issues with items on the menu not being available but it was on a Sunday after a very busy and sunny weekend. Matthew our waiter handles these issues amazing and did everything her could to make these issues not spoil our evening. Great work.
E. C.
Great service and food, would definitely recommend.
D. N.
Browns seem to be resting on their laurels a little. Had a cooked breakfast there recently and was underwhelmed. Whilst the serving of sausage and the two eggs were generous the rest of the plate was pretty scant. Two very small rashers of bacon, two small pieces of toast, a tiny pan of baked beans, and the meanest portion of black pudding I have ever encountered. I shall not be rushing back for breakfast.
D. S.
This restaurant serves such good quality food, their staff is always welcoming and accomodating even at the last minute. We were served by Roy who made our experience really entertaining. He looked after us well and was very honest.
The only thing I do not like when I visit is their hand sanitiser, as to be honest this might be the smelliest and stickiest one around:) Hence I always bring mine these days. Thanks.
G. G.
Great food at great prices. The service was also brilliant.
A starter (sourdough bread) to share, two mains, a desert (apple and rhubarb crumble with custard) to share, two drinks and two latte's all for £65 from the A La Carte menu.
Really nice building inside as well, highly recommended if you're visiting Edinburgh and you fancy something to eat.
J. M.
Lovely attentive staff and delicious food.
R. A. K.
Nice afternoon drink but service was bit slow and the conveniences were not great even though it wasnt that busy
G. D.
Great service, tasty food and wholesome ambience
J. H.
Great food welcoming staff and lovely decor definitely be going again
S. M.
Excellent choice for a family dinner. Food was really nice, especially the steaks and the service was friendly and very efficient. Holly Webber was our waitress and did an excellent job catering for my family's needs. Well done.
D. M.
Nice atmosphere and could have been in Paris, Brussels or Prague. Good service from friendly staff. Perhaps a bit pricey but download their app for discount offers. Nice food, nice place.
K. G.
I always enjoy a meal here- great staff, super menu nd love the chilled ambience
M. P.
We always visit Browns
Great food
V good service
Little overpriced but worth a booking
S. G.
The restaurant has had a stunning refurbishment since I last visited Edinburgh - inside or outside it's an absolute delight. The service is fantastic and the staff are extremely polite and attentive. I visited on a Sunday and there was a list of 'Sunday Roast' options in addition to the a la carte menu. The food was delicious and the wait not overly long for a table of 5. Well worth a visit.
L. B.
Mid week lunch, very quick and tasty. Nice to see it busy
1. B.
Absolutely amazing place. Food is excellent, service was excellent from Marcin. A true gentleman. Drinks were amazing and the atmosphere was lovely.
C.
Enjoyed our meal tonight. Good service, didn't have a table booked and were able to get a walk in no problem.
C. d.
Great atmosphere, fantastic food and service was 1st class. Would certainly recommend and we will be back for sure.
p. s.

A. I.
Beautiful food and our servers provided stunning services
K. M.
A delightful restaurant, excellent food and service. The waiter was very knowledgeable of the food and drinks available. This was a work celebratory dinner and I would highly recommend Browns.
K. B.
Great service, ambience and food.

Perfect Sunday Roast. We went for an early dinner on the 17th November and the service was spot on, the waitress was lovely and the atmosphere, just right.
A. H.
We had a lovely meal at Browns this Friday eve - Yilmaz was super friendly and attentive. I have a dairy allergy and he made sure I was able to find soemthing suitable and was extra contentious regarding this. He was an excellent server.
G. b.
Amazing experience great food lovely atmosphere staff was great too
J. D.
Food was delicious! Service was great. I really recommend eating here. The menu contains a wide variety of dishes.
M. C.
Great evening. Service was fantastic. The waiter that looked after us was brilliant. Made us so welcome.
We will be back.

I always enjoy a visit to Brown's, it hasn't changed for years but why should it?
S. R.
Been to this restaurant twice, the food was lovely and the service was great each time.
J. M.
Very pleasant dinner, would definitely go again
L. C.
Lovely Sunday afternoon sitting in the winter sun sipping a lovely red wine and people watching
B. P.
We arrived at 8.30pm for some dessert, the menu had quite the selection, everyone was impressed with the taste of the food, as well as, presentation.
Service was a quite slow, however the staff were very friendly.
J. M.
Excellent menu and food was delicious.
P. V.
Lovely ambience, great service, very welcoming and friendly. Food was fab! Definitely worth a visit, they do breakfast, lunch and dinner! You won't be disappointed.

After a long train journey, Browns was the perfect place to relax in comfortable surroundings, listen to piano and eat some good food.
Beautiful place, great waiting staff, a wee bit of luxury
i. r.
Good food and attentive staff in this spacious restaurant with booths. Great in these times where you don't want to feel too crammed in. Steak pie good but profiteroles were amazing.
A. G.
Clean comfortable ornate surroundings with friendly staff and superb cusine. We (three) shared a starter and had a main meal plus a drink each. Cost £104.Worth every penny.
L. E.
Lovely food ,great service as always .Never have a complaint at Browns
I. C.
Very nice restaurant with lovely surroundings & atmosphere. Food very good & reasonably priced
P. H.
Great place really goodfoodand service and really clean
C. M.
Went for breakfast, got mushroom omelette, absolutely lovely. My sister ordered tray of pastries. All very nice.
Staff very attentive, definitely be back.
L. F.
Lovely evening with family. Food good. Excellent service and lovely atmosphere.
L. G.
Always one of my favourites ❤ Great cocktails and the food not too bad either if you fancy a bite to eat. The staff were friendly and informative
J. B.
I had the lobster thermador but it wasn't really thermador sauce, it was just mustard spread on the top of the lobster. We didn't notice that they had added a service charge for 2 of us so regret leaving a tip as well.
Update 21st August, email address you gave me was wrong!! Checked other posts, got the right email address, emailed on Wednesday 18th August, no response, I guess your earlier response was so others think your dealing with it when your quite clearly ignoring it.
C. F.
Great meal! Staff very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. The chocolate profiteroles with caramel sauce were to die for!
D.
Came here for an anniversary meal with my girlfriend this evening and left very satisfied.
The staff are extra vigilant when it comes to measures brought in as a result of Covid. They don’t make a big fuss about it but you can tell due diligence is being taken in order to quell the threat of the virus.
The atmosphere inside is lovely, the lighting, music and ambience sets a very relaxing vibe for enjoying your meal/night out. The room does tend to carry the background hum of customers but that’s to be expected with any restaurant I suppose, to my appreciation the music isn’t cranked up way above the noise of the customers so in all it’s a rather pleasant noise and not unbearable.
We were served by a lovely man called Jean who was very attentive when it came to tending to my allergen requirements. He was friendly and sincere and we even shared a couple of laughs. I wanted to leave him an extra tip but to my disappointment found out a 10% service charge was already calculated into the bill, I’d have left 30% if I could.
The food is delicious. I ordered the burger (which was customised for me due to my allergy requirements) and I had no problem at all polishing it off. My girlfriend had the Browns Club and said it was very tasty and she ate near enough the whole thing, she can struggle at times with her eating so the fact she left the plate almost clean told me all I needed to know about her thoughts on it.
I’ve been coming here since I was 6 years old with family & friends and for the past 14 years the quality has never slipped in my opinion. I gladly return here every time knowing I’ll be looked after and have tasty food on my plate. So when my girlfriend and I were choosing a place to eat while we’re up here, one place sprang to mind immediately.
Thank you to all the team for making us feel welcome, putting tasty food in-front of us and granting us a lovely evening that we both really enjoyed.
T. C.
Was very impressed with the service and standards of Browns - will definitely return
k. w.
Booked at the last minute. Meal was ok. We ordered steak with chips. Steak was good. We did not want desserts so expresso martini which was excellent.
M. W.
Only stopped for passing mid morning drinks. Staff very pleasant and a very nice alfresco experience. The Browns raspberry soda was very refreshing and light.
I. J.
Lovely food, great service.
Y.
Check your bill carefully! The Govt discount was not taken off our bill and when queried was told "sorry I forgot". When revised bill was provided the 10% service charge had not been adjusted and remained the same as incorrect bill. That said, the food was decent and service wasn't too bad either.
T. M. S.
Nice place to eat..Me ,my wife and my two boys had a great time ..restaurant is very clean ..b4 i eat in any restaurant i first check their toilet..meal great and service 10/10
O. A.
I have been reading the reviews of this place as we were trying to decide where to go and have some food that wasn't pub food. I came across some saying that it is just slow service. We thought we aren't so hungry so I wouldn't mind having to wait a while. We went in and we had been seated by a very nice chap.. and then we have just been sitting at the table for 35 minutes, up to the point when I just wanted to get up and leave but my other half went to speak to someone about it. Very slow service is fine, even though it wasn't busy at all, but most of the waiting staff was not attentive at all. We asked 2 waiters and they both said give me 2 minutes, but never came back. The same chap who showed us to our table came by and honestly, he was rather surprised himself that we haven't even been able to order drinks yet, let alone food. We ordered in the end and he really took care of it and if I am fair, the food was very nice, but again, the waiting staff is not attentive at all. That has nothing to do with slow service. That is the cause of the slow service. Shame.
S. L.
Great place, but better on an evening. The lights are beautiful when lit in a night time- very romantic.
Good choice of food and reasonably priced.
J. L.
First class. Scones excellent and staff very nice
C. J.
Booked for festive afternoon tea and wasn't disappointed. Very nice and great atmosphere too
R. N.
Great location. Nice high end vibes. Great selection of food and drink. Staff were friendly but could have been more attentive.
A. S.
Very good food and service.
C. B.
Brilliant food and lovely attentive staff. Can't wait to go back
I. L.
Really nice breakfasts, service was excellent. Seated very quickly by a welcoming host called Jay. Had a good laugh with the manageress regarding myself looking like a character from the marvel universe. Highly recommended to tourists and locals. Great vegan options
2. M. D.
Jay and his staff are fantastic, as a place for breakfast, lunch or dinner you can't expect better service in Edinburgh. Thank you all for your dedication to make our experience
J. Y. (. Y.
Great Food and Service at Brown's and Window Seat enabled us to watch the Festive Ice Skaters on the Rink outside
N. B.
Service was very professional. Food was very good and the lighting creates a chill atmosphere despite the hustle and bustle of a clearly popular restaurant.👌 👍🏻
A. G.
Had a lovely light bite of 3 excellent starters, sitting outside in the sunshine! Very good service and great food! Good job!
R. H.
Lovely brunch but pretty expensive!
F. M.
Third visit to this venue and whilst the food was lovely and the atmosphere is always lively and entertaining, the service is very slow. Waited 20mins after we arrived, before we could order drinks and food took a while to come. In fairness it was busy, and we were prepared to wait, but when it did quieten down we still couldn't attract a staff member's attention to order drinks or dessert so decided to leave. It's a lovely venue and the food hasn't disappointed on any occasion I have been, but the service hasn't improved since my last visit.
S.
First of all, the food was amazing.
We went for mains and dessert, and we were very impressed with the food.
Unfortunately, the service wasn't great.
We were sat down, and left unattended for around 30 minutes, and the waiting staff kept looking at us, but not actually coming to our table.
Nobody really acknowledged the long time, and it felt like we were an inconvenience because we were only a table of two.
When mains came out, we were very impressed with the food, but it took a long time to clear down and offer us dessert menus.
It also took a long time to get dessert ordered too.
I've given 4 stars because the food was honestly great, and perhaps the staff were just having a busy day, so I wanted to be fair and I think 4 stars reflects our experience.
If we didn't have to wait so long without drinks or food, it could easily have been 5 stars
B. C.
Really enjoyed having brunch here - great coffee and the restaurant is effortlessly cool. Just need to get back to try the cocktails now!
G. P.
I'm one who usually avoids the city centre, especially during the festival. However my boss gave me a gift card to use in the restaurant. I took my Mum and Dad for a spot of breakfast this morning, none of us had visited before. It was excellent and all 3 of us agreed we would definitely be back. Lovely food and ambience and friendly staff. Thoroughly enjoyed!
D. F.
Lovely food and decor. Really liked the meal and good time with friends.
I have deducted 1* due to the pianist being a pain in the backside. Really loud music, slow, fast, slow, fast. Jeez Louise, calm down man!! It was like cat running over the keys at times. It was nice when it was slow and subtle but that was few and far. Way too haphazard for any relaxation.
The best time was when he was away for a break.
If you do go, ask to be seated away from the piano and any speakers if its set up via that way. You have been warned!!!
K. S.
Amazing dining experience. New Year's Eve was fabulous, food was excellent, and the service was amazing. Live music from the bar piano drifted into the dining area and we were well looked after all night by the friendly staff. They had a huge range of drinks to choose from and everything was delivered to the table at the perfect moment. It was a little pricey but in my opinion well worth it.
D. T.
Excellent lunch (lunch menu) and service
J. H.
I had a great time in Browns and have enjoyed superb customer service. Special thanks to Yilmaz, who created incredible atmosphere through his attentive and friendly service.
n.
Nice but pricey. Small portions, quite expensive but at least the food was good quality. Your expected to have to pay 10% service charge even though it says its optional??? Considering we had to wait quite a while to be served even though there was hardly anybody in, we asked for the service charge to be taken off the bill. The waitress said she would have to speak to her manager 1st??? Any one would have though we'd committed some sort of crime by asking to have it taken off the final bill???
T. T.
Lovely food,staff & atmosphere
L. S.
Lovely meal and table. Great day out with family
J. D.
A lovely restaurant and vibe, but very expensive for what it is. £14 for a basic salad, with an extra £3 for chicken on top. £17 for a chicken salad! I’ll be back if and when they rethink their pricing.
D. H.
Friendly staff and well organised covid restrictions make this restaurant & bar in the centre of Edinburgh a joy to visit. Sit outside if you can brave the Scottish weather. There's plenty of room inside and they will accept walk-ins. Fine to just have coffee but full menu being served too.
P. S.
Great food, lovely surrounding. Bench seats were a bit tight
M. R.
Dined outdoors at Browns on George street last night. The food was great and the service from vilmaz superb. He was attentive, personable and knowledgable, an outstanding waiter!
A. B.
Great place for a family, business or general group of friends. They have a massive array of cocktails and drinks, alcoholic and non alcoholic. Food is devine however the main courses were lacking in size, didn't quite fill you up. Desert menu was good, if not a little restricted. Overall, a great night/evening out, perfect place for everyone.
G. M.
Lovely place and great choice on the menu. Waiting staff are friendly and efficient
M. S.
Had a wonderful full Scottish breakfast here, the atmosphere was lovely, the server was very helpful and was more than happy to help cater to one of my friends dietary requirements. We ended up staying at the table and chatting for a while after our food and were never rushed by the staff. I would highly recommend.
M. K.
nice food clean toilets very nice place
H. B.
Good food, lovely atmosphere. Staff were not great. It took ages to be seated, even to be noticed we were standing in the waiting area. The restaurant wasn't overly busy and staff seemed to be standing chatting ignoring the accumulating numbers of people at the door waiting to be seated.
I used to love coming here but it definitely is not as good as it used to be
R. H.
We came in on a Sunday afternoon with the odd request of scones and cocktails and they were only too happy to oblige! Delicious wee scones and jams, and really expert cocktails. Great atmosphere and lovely service as well. Coming back for a celebration dinner soon!
J. L.
Lovely restaurant. Great food and really attentive waiters. Will visit again
C. C.
Ehhh..... It was okay. Table of 4. We had three courses. Meatballs were dry. Steak overcooked from choice and cold. Steak and ale pie was more like a veg pie with steak flavour. Dessert was actually not bad and coffee was bitter. The Chap on service was lovely. Lovely environment but needs a little TLC in places.
A. H.
Very good, excellent service throughout, the quality of food was spot on.
Next time we're in Edinburgh will most definitely dine at Browns
S. O.
Excellent service and food however the lighting is awful and I don't know how many people had to turn on their phone torches to read the menu
A. S.
This place used to be my favourite place to eat, the atmosphere of well dressed people the live piano and the pleasant staff made it very enjoyable. It has become a bit hit and miss of late with the service while still pleasant needed reminding of drinks orders and the odd item missing from an ordered dish. The evening seems to be a better quality experience. I'm giving this place 4 stars as I may have been unlucky. Worth an evening visit, very nice.
D. L.
Visited last week for lunch. Excellent food and service
R. G.
Nice, laid back atmosphere, tasty food and prices are reasonable, but I've knocked off 1 star because they forgot the bread sauce with our roast. Unfortunately, we also didn't realise until later. The coffees were lukewarm too.
B. H.
Great place with a great choice of food! Staff were very professional and gave a high level of customer service 👏 thank you
M. C.
Thank you for contacting me. My rating reflectswhat I believe is a mid range restaurant, not an exclusive, Edinburgh restaurant. Your prices are, in my view, reflecting a higher star rating than that on offer. I thought the food served was perfectly adequate but could not rate it 4 or 5 star. The house wine was not recommended by your waitress - that may be a positive. She advised that the head waiter did not recommend it! There is no good reason why house wines should not be perfectly acceptable. If they are not, then take them off the menu please.
S. F.
Great place, expensive but worth the treat
D. C.
I came here today with 2 friends for afternoon tea. Whilst the service, decor and ambience were great, it seemed that my request of a vegetarian afternoon tea (which the restaurant was notified of at the time of booking) seemed to be quite a challenge, and I was told our waitress would have to check with the kitchen. After I was asked if I ate fish (vegetarians do not) I was given a rather uninspiring selection of cream cheese and egg sandwiches.
It really should not be such a challenge for an establishment such as Browns to provide as interesting a variety of vegetarian sandwiches as non-vegetarian - other restaurants in Edinburgh manage this perfectly well. I will return to Browns for the positive reasons I noted above, but will sadly have to think twice about the afternoon tea.
S. N.
Inspite of the COVID restrictions this place was busy and friendly as usual.
Service both times we ate here was efficient and the food was very tasty.
Lovely interior and plenty of space for SD.(social distancing!)
S. Z.
Very stylish, nice food.lovely cosy lighting.
E. G.
Very nice restaurant in old town of Edinburgh. Food is very good, serving as well. Definitely worth visiting.
H. G.
Great place! Went here for breakfast. Full traditional cooked Scottish breakfast was excellent, well presented and yummy quality ingredients. The smoothies were also great! Great atmosphere, cool place and staff were very friendly. Can highly recommend!
M. T.
Nice location ,spoilt by a smell of fish.
Kitchen smell extraction needs attention.
E. W.
Your Breakfast was fab, the sausages are to die for. But do we wait to be seated or not ?? There was no one about to ask.
Our waitress was very nice and polite and professional.
A goodbye and thank you from any member of staff would have been lovely and maybe enhanced our visit.
M. (.
Very good food, lovely environment to relax for a meal and polite, friendly staff on hand. Occasionally difficult to attract their attention even on a slow night, but at least they aren't constantly hovering unnecessarily!
Price is about what I would expect for the quality of locale and product, although not somewhere you can go regularly on an NHS salary - perfect for a treat on date night though!
i.
I've been visiting Browns on a regular basis for business meetings over the last 4 years but never had the opportunity to dine there until this week. I have to say that I was extremely impressed with the food and professionalism of the staff. Our Brazilian waitress (sorry, forgot her name), was extremely polite and helpful, which helped to make the overall time there relaxing and enjoyable. I will be certain not to leave it so long before returning.
L. R.
Very elegant place. Good for romantic and business dinner. Good background songs (chilled). The decoration is amazing. Price for the meals very expensive but those meals are top quality, really tasty!!!!!
R. B.
Lovely place for a bite to eat , friendly staff, and reasonably priced hopefully be bk soon
J. G.
Overpriced, slow service, excellent decor. 10% service charge automatically added to bill. Have been regularly in its 22 years in Edinburgh but less so these days.
S. D.
Had the set menu - available up to 7pm - small but good selection for a reasonable price. Just a bit disappointed as the steak wasn't as good as the last time and took the Arctic Roll for dessert and it was just a bit of a shop bought one with added fruit!
K. J.
Lovely food as always. Beautiful venue
M. F.
Had a lovely evening last night, celebrating a friend's birthday. We had the drinks party package, which comes with a gorgeous buffet. All served by our lovely waiter (sorry, didn't catch his name, dark hair/beard and moustache). A selection of wine, beer and delicious cocktails. Definitely recommend it for a good night out.
J. R.
Staff very pleasant clean love the window seat

Very nice breakfast

We came to visit as one of our friend has recommended and told us we should try this place to us on our stay in Edinburgh and we did.
Place itself is great with good layout and awesome menu.
It was a quiet night on sunday so there wasnt any problem to get a table.
Food wasnt excellent but was good , we had a chicken schnitzel and pork belly.
Plenty of choice from drinks menu , overall experience was great . Well Done to you all.
Definitely one of the places to go and eat while you are in Edinburgh.
One & last thing ,
It will be 5/5 if there were more smile from their staff but unfortunately not everyone like to be at work.
Smiles great asset to your team it will be .
Hopefully another time we will see lots of smiles.
R. P.
Lunch today for three. Thai fish cakes, steak and ale pie and fish'n'chips. All were excellent. Fish was initially sent back to complete cooking! No problem, a new portion was returned with apologies. Eton mess and rhubarb crumple to follow, all looked and tasted great. Drinks and coffees were fine. Service was very good. Been many times before over the years and will visit again in the future. Tables cannot be booked and on a rugby weekend it can be very busy.
h. h.
They were very good to seat all 11 of us at short notice. The food is delicious and they catered for lactose free and vegan with no problem. Wonderful service.
J. C.
The service and the staff was excellent food was excellent will go back soon.
A. H.
Always great service and fantastic food here Maybe a little pricey but it's so worth it
J. K.
Very nice food, great setting and friendly service

Dined outdoors at Browns on George street last night. The food was great and the service from vilmaz superb. He was attentive, personable and knowledgable, an outstanding waiter!

Absolutely outstanding.service was quality.and just good quality food

Good grub and good service nothing to dislike.

Good menu and drinks in a nice west end atmosphere

Great atmosphere, excellent food and service.

Check your bill carefully! The Govt discount was not taken off our bill and when queried was told "sorry I forgot". When revised bill was provided the 10% service charge had not been adjusted and remained the same as incorrect bill. That said, the food was decent and service wasn't too bad either.

Very nice and excellent service.

Amazing service
D. G.
Just had an amazing anniversary/birthday meal at Browns. I had the steak, probably one of the best I have tasted and my husband had the sea bass risotto. We will definitely be back
C. P.
Very attentive staff. Food was lovely, some delicious drinks. Venue is stunning
T. M.
Friendly staff who were willing to accommodate us late on a Friday night when most other places had stopped taking patrons. Prawn cocktail and burger were great, though the burger was fairly messy to eat - perhaps a cocktail stick or something similar to support the burger would make it easier to eat. Otherwise I would definitely recommend!
G. C.
Staff brilliant food superb and cocktails amazing, a great night was had in Browns
R. O.
They are understaffed, had a bit of a wait as nobody was at the front of the house to greet us. Food was good. I wouldn't recommend the mash potatoes, our waitress was lovely taking a fight with a colleague very professionally. Irena thank you
S. L.
Good quality food at a reasonable price and lovely atmosphere. Staff are efficient & friendly. Looking forward to my next visit
M. H.
On a hen night. Was a very busy Saturday night before Christmas so that may explain fairly standard food and less than brilliant service. Think they were struggling to cope with numbers. All in all it was okay but better food and service could be found elsewhere. For me it was not worth the trip into the centre of Edinburgh.
J. L.
Breakfast 9am Saturday with friends. It took a long time to come and was not hot. Eggs were hard...everything overcooked. Not even the coffee was hot! Disappointing. Service wasn't good either - slow and inattentive with poor attentiin to detail(clearing empties when bringing fresh coffee, no checking back if we were happy.) Wouldn't rush back.
W. M.
Excellent meal ..Excellent service..would definitely recommend. Lovely experience. 😍😍😍
J. L.
Great food and atmosphere. The service was fantastic our waitress was particularly helpful and great with us.
R. M.
Got a nice carrot and corriander soup for starter and a chicken ham leek pie with mash. She got a club sandwich. All was nice service was good.. lost a star as we were 5 minutes after breakfast time and thought they could have still served us these options.
M. M.
Good restaurant, quite large and airy which was great on what was a very hot afternoon. We were issued menus very quickly, time to choose and meals arrived quickly and very enjoyable. Iced water provided free of charge. I thought 2 large glasses of Pinot Grigio rather costly at £7.25 each! Meals slightly more expensive than other eateries we have visited but enjoyable just the same. I have visited Browns twice before, including an office Xmas night out and not been disappointed.
A. M. H.
Fantastic night on Saturday. We were a large group. The service received from Hannah was first class and she made the special occasion run really smoothly. Thank you very much Hannah and everyone else. AMH
B.
Absolutely fantastic service even on an extremely busy night after the Scotland-Wales six Nations game, the starters were delicious 1 scallops 1 meatballs. Mains were the ribeye steak cooked to perfection medium rare, with excellent skin on fries and possibly the best onion rings we've tasted and my wife had the peppecorn sauce which was really creamy and more-ish. Wasn't cheap, but worth every penny, definitely will go back when we're in Edinburgh.
D. M.
Nice centrally located restaurant on George street. Food was good and service was alright.
Perhaps a little expensive for what you get but maybe that's due to its location. Always busy and always has a buzz in the place.
Now with some of George street shut off to traffic there is an area outside that you can sit at which is very nice. I would recommend booking ahead especially at the weekend as it can be very busy at times.
R. E.
Lovely atmosphere but if you’re going for scones, go to a local bakery.
R. G.
Very nice meal at Browns, quick without being hurried, attentive staff, as a group we had our own dining area which was different. Pays to book ahead, we had 3 courses, just too nice a menu not to.
L. M.
I cannot believe how much bigger it is in here than what I was expecting!
The waiter was helpful and the menu was good. However some of the items were off the menu, which was disappointing. All in all, the ambience was relaxed, the food was tasty- though not exceptional, and we had a lovely evening.
V. G.
Lovely afternoon tea very nice staff would highly recommend.
S. A.
Good menu and drinks in a nice west end atmosphere
A. P.
The atmosphere and ambience of Browns George Street is lovely. It varies between relaxed brunch ambience and lively evening cocktails. The dining area is well laid out and spacious. While the food is well presented and very tasty. Cocktails in Browns are also divine and worth checking out on a night out.
S. D.
Amazing food and fairly portioned the service is amazing and brilliant priced on food and drinks
T. G.
Excellent food and customer service. Great restaurant and wonderful ambiance. If ever back in Edinburgh I would come again for a memorable meal. Live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
H. F.
Visited for breakfast at around 10am on a Sunday morning. Lovely and quiet, with a nice atmosphere. Service was spot on, and the breakfast options were great. Highly recommend the Eggs Royale!
T. O. M.
Great food and if possible better service... There was something for everyone including a gluten-free menu with really tasty food for those of us who needed that. It's definitely a place you visit again...and again 😀
H. W.
Browns looks amazing- it doesn't disappoint from an aesthetic perspective and the old, high ceilings and big fans make for a dramatic dining experience that doesn't always have to break the bank.
Browns is a regular venue for a lunch catch-up during my hour long break from work. The restaurant and bar area varies between being packed-out busy during festival time and very quiet on more rainy days.
Despite these varying levels of busy, my food has always arrived in plenty of time for me to have a good catch up with my family/friends/co-workers and not stress about being late back to the office.
Saying this, the quality of the food- whilst always acceptable- is also varying. Sometimes you will be sent dishes with few extras (no crispy onions on the hot dog), or a dish will simply be quite different to how it's described on the menu (a chocolate salted caramel pot came out as chocolate salted caramel profiteroles...which were lovely, but not what was described).
Despite these few mishaps, staff are always friendly and I do find it is a reliable central location for a good meal.
S. P.
Lovely food and drinks. Service very good.
M. M.
Get a window seat and enjoy a home made main and dessert. Best time to visit is on a week day (lunchtime) as it is quieter and you get superb service (they always seem so attentive).
Best meal: Fish dishes
Best drink: Wine always
Best for: couples and friends, not wee kiddies. Definitely, for special occasions
Prices: surprisingly reasonable especially for the George Street crowd
C. G.
Had dinner with friends here at the weekend and it was fantastic! Our server was lovely and the food was delicious too. Can't wait to go back!
C. A.
Great food and service.
S. K.
A party of 4 for a Sunday lunch we all loved the food. Lovely ambience and the service was excellent. Couldn't find fault at all. Would recommend to anybody
A. N.
Lovely place to visit. Me and my boyfriend, we had our afternoon Tea at Brown's Edinburgh. The waitors and waitress are really friendly. The Tea set is really nice as well, they have really nice Scones and red velvet Cake. Fully recommended, if i ever come and visit Edinburgh again, i will surely visit again!
c.
Good quality food, relaxed old style decoration under the sounds of a live piano. A bit expensive though (it's George street! Remember) it is good place if you have guests.
T. M.
Lovely place - polite and helpful staff. Great food!
C. Z. R.
I ordered the "Lobster risotto"
The lobster was a bit too chewy, and the risotto itself was lacking of cheese, besides that my friend found hair in his dessert...
Overall the food was okay and probably what you would expect, but i would not recommend eating there
M. S.
One of my all time favourite Restaurants in Edinburgh. Consistently great food and friendly efficient staff. Well worth a visit - even if a coffee is all you have time for.
P. B.
Very enjoyable experience with lovely food and very pleasant waiting staff
S. D.
Came in a large group for afternoon tea. Tea itself was quite nice, sandwiches and cakes were good but nothing special. Staff were attentive but seemed thrown off by how many of us the were, odd as we'd booked. Only breakfast tea as an option, no earl grey or fruit tea offered but not bad for the price.
D. W.
Friendly, first class service, great festive menu. Dined there with two friends on Wed 11th. Nothing too much for staff. Very attentive and food was excellent.
K. M.
Food was really good, but service was very slow.
m.
great place for breakfast in a lovely building .
C. A. N.
Had a lovely lunch with my hubby. His mum and her sister for motherinlaws birthday, everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food, good service. Will be back
S. G.
Excellent service. Was recommended by Miller & Carter as they were fully booked. Food was excellent, chefs happy to cater for needs. Would happily return on next visit to Edinburgh.
Over the last 4 nights. Between the Dome, Amarone & HRC, the Browns came out on top. With Amarone a very close 2nd.
A. S.
Staff were great and food was lovely. Wrong drink brought to the table and what we wanted was off the menu. Broken glass on the floor under our table. Having said all that we did enjoy our evening
L. M.
Great service, good food loved our boozy brunch
i. r.

My girlfriend and I booked afternoon tea at 3pm and were seated quickly as the place was quite quiet. I asked if we could have the champagne afternoon tea for £26 for two but if I could instead of champagne have another drink instead. The waitress kindly said we could and asked what drink I'd like - so I ordered a Peroni. The drinks and afternoon tea arrived on a lovely display tray and we quickly got to work. I didn't say anything until later in the day to my girlfriend but the bread on the finger sandwiches were a little stale. I said nothing as this was my first afternoon tea and thought since she had said nothing then perhaps this was the preferred way to serve this - although I can't think of why I thought that now. The drinks were lovely and we got a cocktail each too, which was truly lovely.

Team Christmas Night Out!
When I originally saw the menu for the Christmas meal it looked a little uninspiring but have to admit that the experience in real life was much better. The food was well presented and tasted fab, our waiting staff were friendly and very helpful too. A really good night was had by all.

Very busy on a rugby Saturday but still excellent. Food was good and service excellent. They were very friendly and accommodating with my 10 month old daughter.

Amazing food, wine and cocktails. Very good value for money and a lovely setting. Beautiful restaurant and attentive staff.

Went here twice with my mum as its her fav place in Edinburgh. We had a lovely brunch and on another day during our stay we had a delicious dinner

A nice chain brasserie (part of Mitchells & Butlers, I believe) that doesn't really feel like part of a chain.
Often end up meeting my folks here for breakfast when they come to Edinburgh to visit. The full Scottish fry up is great, as is the eggs Benedict, and the staff are always attentive and make sure your are well supplied with fresh tea or coffee.
Plenty of space and a relaxed, almost continental, atmosphere. The lunch and dinner menus are just as good as the breakfast, and often there is a live pianist in the evenings.

Beautifully decorated, cozy salon. The staff was very kind which is always a plus. The food ratio between quality and price was appropriate. Would recommend!

Great lively business which offers good food delivered by efficient and friendly staff who don't rush you. Thanks for making a family outing most relaxing and enjoyable.

Pretty great food, not so fantastic prices. While everything was nice, the chips were a bit over salty and overall I didn't feel the meal was that great value for money despite tasting pretty great.

Nice location and very good food although rather expensive.

Good food but seems to have lost a little atmosphere in the renovation

A classic of George Street, Browns is one of my favourite meeting points not only because its food, drinks and service are always consistently good or above but also because many of my friends have children and they can accommodate them no problem.
As usual the front of house was welcoming, even though the place at lunchtime was rather busy.
As I was having a business lunch I got the Fish & Chips (cod) with pea and mint purée, tartar sauce & chunky chips. The two pieces of cod were very tasty and the lightly battered coat was perfectly crispy, a real delight. Chips and tartar sauce passed the test too. Thanks to the strong O2 WiFi I was able to complete some reports in-situ, and after that the very well deserved pint(s) of Amstel lager to wash down the whole lot. Even though food prices range from average to the upper side, alcoholic drinks are, as expected in George Street, rather expensive.
The service was good, professional and efficient as always. Will certainly go back, keep up the good work!

Nice pleasant helpful staff, enjoyed the food I had. Lights were quite low so not easy to read menu, so used my mobile torch to read and view the food when it came to the table.

Fine food but service poor... Less staff chatting at the bar and pay attention to your customers

I visited Browns for the first time ever at the end of the Festival, and it could easily become my favourite coffee and/or tea venue in Edinburgh. Situated at the Charlotte Square end of George Street, it stretches back in neo-Victorian splendour to include a bar, a restaurant and a conservatory. The staff couldn't have been more helpful or accommodating, even topping up my teapot with hot water to eke out the last of my green tea. A lovely place to just sit and be!

We visited Browns for lunch today for the first time whilst on holiday in Edinburgh. What a find! Delicious food served by a charming waitress called Vanessa and lovely ambience. We will be back! Thank you very much.

As Christmas lunch menus go, it was very nice and fairly priced. Service was a bit slow. That said, we weren't in a hurry.

We'll definitely be back!

My husband and I spent the evening in here on Saturday 5th Sept we were made to feel so welcome one staff member in particular made the evening for us by making us a impromptu platter for our anniversary! Thankyou all !!

Not quite as good as we've experienced on our previous visits. Staff a bit light on the ground so attention to detail a little lacking. Browns you had something special so don't lose it!

Generally good. Attentive staff. Varied but limited menu. Tables little close at the rear section if privacy needed. Good for lunch and meetings.

Good location, fair food, average overall.

Excellent eggs Florentine and mushroom: perfectly poached eggs, not quite enough of the delicious, punchy Hollandaise (next time I'll ask for extra) , and a truly delicious unwatery mushroom.

Great place for a Sunday brunch. Airy and light ambience, good food, helpful staff, reasonable prices. Family friendly.
