Food was ok, especially for the price. Coffee could have been better if it's a little hotter. Desserts were a little over the sweet side. Environment was good but staffs were slow at service, even to pay the bill took quite a while.

I have loved everything I have eaten here. There's a great selection of food and drinks. It's a very large space so they can usually accommodate larger parties, even if you walk in during dinner time. Service is a bit slow, it sometimes seems like they're ignoring you, but it's nice that they're not down your throat trying to kick you out. They also have delicious vegetarian options.
A. Y.
Good vibes, lots of open spaces, funky decor. And a small menu that is quite good at what it delivers. I enjoyed the gnocchi, and would definitely recommend it here. The staff were friendly too, putting up with a large and rowdy crowd, even taking our pictures on request. Thanks for the chill vibes and good memories!

I've been here a few times and I enjoyed the environment and staff. It is a nice place to go with friends. The food is OK and there are good options for vegetarians.
E. H.
Perfect balance between trendy upmarket dining and wholesome simple foods. I say upmarket but the pricing is reasonable and it helps that the staff are super nice and attentive! Perfect place for a study brunch or an intimate evening meal

I ordered the cauliflower shawarma and note that, while delicious, is a take on or perhaps a deconstructed shawarma as what can we do out was literally an entire cauliflower! also what came out wasn't what was described on the menu as it said that it should have been with molasses pistachios but, as can be seen in the picture, it instead had pomegranate seeds on it (also it is massive!). Ultimately it's no bother for me but it wasn't what was advertised so I'm knocking a star off for that otherwise everything was great.
On the Saturday night I went, i was there earlyish around five and there were loads of tables available.
The staff were friendly and checked in a couple of times during the meal.

Lovely cafe with a quirky interior that is so quintessentially Edinburgh you'll fall in love like I did. Great lunchtime menu and amazing staff who will have a wee cheery chat with you on a windy Scottish day.

Brunch at Checkpoint: all the guides said to try it and I'm nothing if not compliant to implied authority, so...
The atmosphere is great, very relaxed; lots of local students; pleasant, grungy backgroud music; friendly and helpful staff. But it is very dark - i had planned to read a book for half an hour or so. Not possible. Unless you are using an illuminated screen, reading/working not an option. This is a place for cosy chats over coffee.
The food was very good but... well, is it ever okay for somewhere to get your order wrong? I went with hashbrown, poached eggs, and hot (spicy) salmon. I was served scrambled eggs. Was this a mistake or a deliberate decision in the kitchen? Because visually the plate was impressive with the scrambled eggs and I think it was actually all the better for it. One for the philosophers. The hash brown was EXCELLENT and all other sins can be forgiven.
The coffee was fine. The flat white was too milky for my taste but the coffee in the americano was really nice and bitter. Juice comes from a bottle.
Overall, it was a meaningful interaction. Will come back - and double-check my order (even though I'll probably be making the wrong choice).

Seriously average quinoa, avocado salad. 95% lettuce.. for £8.50. Nice place to be though, good for coffee/drinks.
L. G.
Delicious food, really good for groups. We went early and they were basically empty which was great!
G. C.
Finally a place that serves Australian-style brunch! Loved the poached eggs and hash - gave a generous portion and had great coffee. Very helpful staff and nothing was unreasonably priced.
B. F.
Didn’t have a couple things on the menu for mid-day, otherwise a great experience.
M. B.
Great brunch, although takes a bit of time (but we were 9 and each ordered 2 items!).
N. I.
Very nice place for food in a good central location. Menu was small with not a lot of choice, but the food I had was delicious. Went for the belly pork which I highly recommend as it was delicious. Price wise it was reasonable and worth it for the taste. Inside was a bit bare, tables very spaced apart so it made for a nice setting for a meal with friends. Staff were nice although slow to serve, had to wait a long time before staff came to ask if we wanted anything else/the bill. Despite this, I would still recommend this place as the food was reasonably priced and delicious.

Checkpoint has an amazing menu, with great exciting healthy food. Really loved the vibe here!

I found this place by accident across from my hotel. It’s fantastic! Food and drinks all day long and the best Bloody Mary I’ve ever had in Edinburgh! Service is gracious and the menu has just about anything you could want. Very casual - many people just chilling or working on their laptops. My new favorite hangout in Old Town!
S. S.
Good food and coffee. I love hay they always have a few vegan options. The vegan breakfast in particular is very good, as are the various bowls I’ve tried here throughout the years. My only issue here is that it’s always so, so dark. More light so that I can see my food in the early evening would be ideal.
W. F. A.
Very serene atmosphere. Great food. Friendly staff. Good wine.

So many great looking places to eat in Edinburgh but so glad we stumbled on this place.
Called in after a visit to the amazing museum of Scotland good vibes from the start.
Friendly staff, simple menu, great
Music.
I settled on the shakshuka, my partner on the aubergines on toast, simple dishes done really well
Definitely be heading back next time we visit this great city.

Visiting Edinburgh for the first time and wandered into Checkpoint for a late evening dinner. Steak was fabulous and the space was comfortable. I will absolutely return if I’m ever back in the area. Thanks for a good experience!

Came here for lunch - was alright.
Gave it another chance for dinner and I’m so GLAD we did. What a wee gem. Must go, fantastic food and unbeatable prices. Great atmosphere. Nonetheless always seems half empty, intimate. Really recommend for dinner service. Lovely staff too!
C. G.
A table for 2 for a late lunch. Apart from being given a bottle of red (when asked for white) and the food being sent back because it was cold we had the best time! Ok, so they were a little chaotic. However, on being told of the issues the 2 staff that looked after us went above and beyond the call of duty. The portion sizes were big, the food was tasty and believe it or not, we would definitely go back.
M. A.
It was quite a busy Sunday but it still took 35 minutes to order drinks and they ended up coming after the meal but there was one really nice server that made up for the quick rushed service of the others. She came and made a bit of small talk with the table explained the situation and was the only person to check if we were ok.
Just don't get a table if you need a quick meal
M. A.
Very very good food . Great menu
Z. H. (. S.
Very cozy and cute. Great environment with beautiful background music. Clean toilet downstairs with places for children and for mothers to feed their children. Staff are very very friendly. They always smile to you. It is close to Edinburgh university. It's never very crowded. Drinks are okay.
N. H.
Although we didn't eat here as it was fully booked, we were made welcome to enjoy a pre theatre drink.
Given that the place was so busy, the staff were very efficient in a relaxed way and were extremely friendly.
I'll definitely try to eat here sometime.

Haven’t tried the food yet but coffee and cakes are excellent, they also have some gluten-free and vegan options. Very friendly staff and quite unique interior design. I will definitely go back there to try some lunch and dinner options.
M. O.
Nice coffeshop/cafe during the day. Good food, interesting menu, nice atmosphere. Also turns into a bit of a bar in the evenings, but I've found the drink service is slow and the drinks are overpriced (£5-6 for a can of beer).
A. W.
Checkpoint was absolutely brilliant. A gem of a restaurant in the heart of Edinburgh. Quirky decor great food at reasonable prices and very friendly and welcoming staff. I loved it and wish we didn't live 250 miles and were only visiting.
K. G.
Checkpoint is a great place to come for reasonably priced, great food, lovely drinks, and alcoholic beverages. The only problem with the restaurant/cafe is that there doesn't seem to be a clear line between cafe, restaurant, and bar. This is not necessarily a bad thing, it's only that for me, the experience becomes slightly uncomfortable because of it. Since it's not necessarily set up as a cafe, I feel pressured to keep ordering food when I set up to do some work. Otherwise, it's a very cool and hip place to come for a bite to eat. I would not, however, recommend coming here if you're looking for a cafe.
n. m.
Very tasty food in interesting surroundings. They have a good menu with lots of options for gluten free and vegetarians which is nice.
It's a bit pricey, but the atmosphere is nice and the staff friendly.
J. S.
Standard experience here.
Soft drinks are very overpriced considering they just give you a can and a small glass with ice - why do non-drinkers get punished so highly?
Toilets are in the back and downstairs - they’re also freezing and some heat could be used down there.
The decor is quite cool.
K. H.
Really good food served up in a grand but comfortable room. An interesting selection of beers and a full cocktail list. The service is impressive too. Well worth a visit.

This was the BEST restaurant we found in pur week long trip in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Food was amazing: pure flavours, healthy, affordable and comfy atmosphere. Can’t recommend enough.

Went with a big group. The staff were lovely and the food was delicious!
R. T.
Good GF options, a decent menu of hearty food at very affordable prices. Decor is characterful but the low lighting feels a bit gloomy. A great affordable choice for food in this neighbourhood.
M. C.
Great big airy room, young trendy service staff, decent and cheapish coffee, menu that's a bit odd - all rosti and smashed avocado - but not bad, if a little lacking in flavour. Often quiet, with good WiFi, mornings and afternoons.
S. S.
Spacious and with plenty of tables. Buggy - friendly if you don't mind loud music in the afternoon. Friendly staff. Reasonable price for French toast and the amount of bacon that you get!
P. D.
The industrial feel of this restaurant has its benefits, high celings beautiful old building brought back to life by a group of bright young things friendly staff always willing to help and offer water top ups, inside sits a shipping container from which you can dine in which is a quirky talking point with guests, the first thing i asked the team was if this was just a pop up during the busy festival period and they said they intend to keep trading well after the festival but will probably change the opening hours accordingly.
the coffee if fantastic with fresh pastries on display a vegan and gluten free menu is available upon request ,overall if you want a quick coffee or a new cool place to sow your friends this is the newest place around.
H. C.
I have always enjoyed Checkpoint. The staff are friendly and there is plenty of room to sit. They're creative with their menu options and I'd highly recommend breakfast here. The coffee is also done well here, if you're not looking for something to eat.
M. C.
Great atmosphere, friendly staff, good food and nice drinks. It has many vegetarian and gluten free options. However, it's a bit expensive for what you get, especially with food.
M. P.
Ordered the beef ragu fettuccine for £8. I don't know why people say it's expensive.
Food was good for its price point. Portion was generous. Plenty of meat.
H. R.
Very comfy ambience, good variety of drinks, reasonable wine price. Unfortunately, I felt like there werent many dinner options on the menu, very few vegetarian ones and no vegan at all.
Z. M. S.
Nice place with interesting selection of brunch items
O. S.
Delicious food options to choose from, with pricing being quite reasonable. Coffee not the greatest, but you can always grab a beer instead. Service always very friendly, even when packed.
D. B.
Great fun on Friday night, have been in for lunch quite a few times actually now but have started going for drinks as well after work sometimes.. Pretty awesome cocktails and beer/wine selection. Beer on tap coming I'm told! Fave of mine. DB
M. S. W.
A nice restaurant with comfortable seating. The coffee I had was great and I’d love to visit again for food. The atmosphere was also great, owing to the impressive building and the interesting interior decor
P.
Food was really good and friendly service but the current menu is seriously lacking and doesn't match with the online menu so couldn't get what we were expecting.
K. K.
I don't like these hipster places with their minimalist beaten up decorations. Don't know what to say, I just don't like having my food served in a flower pot or tin... If you like that sort of thing, sure go ahead, you'll love it, this place is just for you.
G. H.
The food was good, but there are discrepancies between the menu in the restaurant and what is shown on the official website. It should be updated so people know what is available to them before arrival.
L. D.
Nice café and restaurant. It is very large and thus, you should always find a quiet table. Great coffee and free WIFI. So also a good place for a business meeting or working
C. O.
Very tasty and filling brunch. The hash browns and scrambled egg was delicious! Good quality food and attentive staff.
T. M.
Great food, sunny, spacious and relaxing. It's a good antidote to the sometimes claustrophobic Brew Lab atmosphere. Will definitely go back.
C. S.
Delicious and interesting food. Service a tad slow but we weren't for hurrying anyway. A wee favourite spot. 😊
T. B.
Enjoyed our food here so much we came back for a second lunch. Perfect place to eat a late brunch or tasty lunch during the Edinburgh Fringe.
E. R. n. F.
It was a great place to park my butt and work for the afternoon. The food was exceptionally tasty and the staff was very sweet. FYI the restroom is down a flight of steps.
S. Y.
Wide open planned restaurant/cafe/Coffeeshop . Not quite sure on its identity, gives the air of an upmarket coffeeshop, with its decor and in-house shipping container, whilst providing table side service and meals.
Lots of space for a laptop warrior to work especially the large bench in the backroom, providing ample lighting and space to spread out.
H. G.
Really great find, came for breakfast and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Coming back for dinner tonight! Absolute gem of a place, just around the corner from the Museum and Royal Mile.
D. M.
The atmosphere here is cosy, friendly, and laidback, the food is wonderful (Hello, halloumi chips), and the staff are fantastic. I love it here.
J. G.
Good coffees and enjoyable espresso martinis during a day out at the Edinburgh festival. Nice location, nice staff and a pleasant atmosphere, I'd recommend it.
A. G.
Great place where you can watch some of the countless irreverent performances of the famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Inside the hall there is a bar area to take a drink.
C. L.
Lovely food and great service. The menu steered away from the usual and there was a nice drinks selection.
K. O. L.
Nice place for cocktails, quite long wait however for just two drinks and it didn't seem that busy.

D. F.
We met a guy outside this restaurant who advised against it but after reading some reviews we gave it a try. Absolutely no regrets!! I had the baked cod with chorizo in a wonderful bean sauce and my wife had the wings and a lentil/squash salad. Both dishes were creative, well presented and delicious. We're from Canada so can't come back regularly.....oh well. Love Edinburgh btw!
