My partner and I went to this chippy just to try the deep fried Mars and it was delicious. We also shared a large chips which was freshly cooked. Sometimes there is nothing better than a good ole bag of scottish chips. We arrived just as they were closing but they very kindly let us sit inside while enjoying our supper. The service was exceptional. Quality of food excellent although a bit on the pricey side but would definitely come back.

The deep fried mars bar was a revelation! Conveniently located in the main tourist area, this means you can get your fix without straying too far from the attractions. I liked that they made no attempt to gentrify the place and tried to keep it as 'normal' as possible despite being very popular

Had always wanted to try a battered Mars Bar, then Agnes of the Fright Night Tour told us that the Clam Shell takeaway does them and so i went there after the tour with my partner. The crazy thing is.. I don't actually even like chocolate and I loved it, so that says it all.

If you want the famous fried mars bar or pizza then this is the place. Its a bit small in size so bevare when there are a lot of tourists

Decent food for the late night. The food is precooked and kept warm so don't expect toasty fresh, but the food doesn't taste stale either. Fried fish was decent and not overloaded with battery. The mince meat pie was rather weak as the filling was really just a hamburger patty. Nothing special but is a good fill up for when nothing else is open.

Got introduced to White Pudding, which is a mix between Haggis and Blood pudding! Apparently this is also home to Scottish food. Found out about this place from 2 YouTubers. One person ordered deep fried Haggis and the other ordered a roll. Apparently they also have an amazing deep fried Mars bar, which is also home to Scottish food inventions! Who would have known?

Nice chippy to take back to our Travelodge, tasty but a lot of bones in the fish. Would go again 👍

Lovely fish and chips! Yes, you have to wait for the fish to be cooked fresh - but it's worth it! Lovely light and thin batter and delicious fish underneath. Chips fabulous and curry sauce great too. Good banter with staff while waiting. Prices higher than I'm used to - but for being right on the Royal Mile - you certainly can't complain. 10/10 would visit again

The family that own it are so nice, and if you need a hangover cure just get chips from here and you’re sorted. Also, I usually go in looking like a tramp having had no sleep and a heavy sesh the night before, so even though it’s banter, I’ll take my chips with a side of “are you single yet” every time. You know who you are, cheeky!

Absolutely brilliant. It was a quiet night in Edinburgh with lots of places shut and no casual takeaway. The Clam Shell is always there with cheery efficient staff. As I waited I had a good banter with the staff and a regular delivery driver. The fish supper was freshly made and excellent as always. Absolutely amazing takeaway. Reasonably priced too. Guys in the shop were fantastic with my 6yr old nephew who is autistic and has Adhd. Will definitely be back to this fantastic chippy We ordered a medium portion of chips, a small portion of chips, chicken nuggets and chips with curry sauce for my nephew and we also grabbed a meal deal which included a 7inch pizza and chips and a drink for £5.95. So if you are hungry and find yourself in the High Street, Edinburgh then head to The Clamshell. You won't be disappointed. 😋

This is the chippy which, for me, does the best sauce and chips on or near the High Street. The prices are not the lowest in town but at least you know that you'll get some good chips and all the classics. The staff are friendly and it is open late, the staff generally staying friendly til close. They do half pizza suppers, understand what "lots of salt and sauce" means and keep their stuff hot.

The Clam Shell is an Old Town institution. Its excellent for a quick bite if you are young, a tourist or just a fan of deep fried fish and chips :) They also do a mars bar supper which if you haven't tried then you will probably live a longer but less chocolatey life than I. The manager is a friendly and welcoming chap, the staff are always efficient and have a smile on their face and its a refreshing change from some of the customer service you get in these type of places. Considering the amount of tourists on the Royal Mile it is not bad value. They are always open when I think of them which is one of the reasons for their 5 stars. Along with all the normal Scottish chippy offerings such as blackpudding, half pizza, smoked sausages etc they also do kebabs, hot dogs, burgers and more. They also sell a small selection of alcohol which is a nice option when time is running low to make it to an off licence. Usually I'll pick up a couple of half pizza suppers and there is still change in a tenner. Not bad for a traditional chippy in the middle of the Royal Mile.
