Reviews of Educated Flea
D. T.
We booked for lunch and we were not disappointed with the food,as it offered great quality portion for the lunch menu. It's a busy venue so would suggest booking in advance. We would of given another star but,we did have an issue with the Bailey coffee we order as the latte was more than half done with froth, over stretching milk created an liquid of shot of Bailey with about quarter cup of milk, while rest was froth, was brought to his attention but was told you ordered a latte.. shame but would go back to eat again.

This place really surprised me. Nothing on the menu screamed I have to try this but I decided to get the specials and the flavors were amazing. I got a pork dish with earl grey rice and a vegetable patty that I can’t remember the name of but both were really good. My husband even liked the vegetable patty. The service was amazing and so accommodating.

Great cozy little restaurant. Lovely friendly staff, great food with a menu that regularly changes and lovely atmosphere. We had a wonderful evening here and will definitely be back soon
R. W.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant. I was in for lunch with my mum and food was excellent and staff were very friendly. I will definitely be back.
R. H.
Absolutely wonderful experience! I shared a few of the small 'bites' with the table, had the incredible, perfectly-cooked and dressed Caribbean spiced steak for main, and delicious ice cream to finish. Everything on the menu is so creative in the best way (still very accessible), and every single bite was delicious! The service was fantastic as well, and the space is very cute and cozy. I can't wait for an excuse to go back!
S. R.
Beautifully fresh food. Lunch was delicious and in such a cute and cosy atmosphere. Staff were lovely as well! Highly recommend.

Fantastic little restaurant, food was really good (I'm vegan and there were only a couple of options but that doesn't matter when the food's this good). The cauliflower starter is a must have, seriously one of the nicest things I've ever had. Aubergine main was good as well. Staff were great, friendly and efficient. Great place.
R. P.
Delicious food, book in advance, highly recommended, try the pigs ears if you like pork scratchings

We went to Educated Flea for my husbands 50th Birthday meal. It was just perfect!
The staff were super friendly and nothing was too much trouble, even though we were probably a real pain they never once let on! 😁 We felt so relaxed and it was down to the excellent service!
The food was delicious. It was so nice to have so well made and tasty. Such a great menu, something a little different which is always good!
I couldn't recommend highly enough! We will be back next time we're in Edinburgh. Thank you so much!
J. R.
My first time in Scotland and I am so glad we happened upon this place. We were lucky enough to get a table and had the most amazing meal. Beautifully prepared gourmet food in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. My only regret is not saving room for dessert.
A. S.
Wonderful service and amazing food! A diverse menu with something for everyone. They were able to accommodate for the different allergies and intollerances we had (Wheat/Gluten and Dairy/lactose). I've gone a few times now and every time I've loved each course.
M. P.
As a coeliac, this is one of the most amazing bistros I’ve been to for gluten-free options and hassle free dining. Every staff member was friendly, highly informed and went above and beyond to accommodate any request. Relaxed atmosphere where nothing is too much trouble and the food itself was out of this world! We’ve been back several times over our short trip to Edinburgh- would definitely come again!
M. B.
Delicious food, friendly staff, and a cozy little venue. We tried it on a whim and ended up liking it so much that we went back the next day!
C. O.
Loved our meal here! Starters were really tasty followed up by amazing mains! Service and staff were also great. Menu was diverse and catered for different dietary requirements. Highly recommended!
m. o.
The place is amazing! Food very tasty. I had watermelon with feta for starter and beef for mains. Service very nice. Big thank you for Aaron👏 definitely will come back
B. M.
Fantastic place to have a meal. Food, service and atmosphere were great. We ordered the Big Cow and was very impressed. Tasty and hearty. The waiter was polite, friendly and very hardworking. Atmosphere could be described as intimate due to cosy size. But what they lack in size, they make up for in terms of quality.
Would highly recommend.
D. B.
Went in on the off change and WOW so glad we did. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. Great service too.
D. M.
Great menu, reasonably priced and lovely staff. The food was super tasty and good wine selection.
B. B.
This cozy place thrives on originality and care. We were told thet every couple of months they change the menue so that clients can keep surprised by their offer and have dishes prepared with seasonal ingredients. Although its a tiny space, they have managed to fit quite a number of tables, so dont be afraid to for group bookings.
They have a fair selection of wines and the personnel is friendly. The food is colorful and incorporates not only a variety of references to ethnic cuisines, but also unexpected mixtures of flavour. Truth is that, while the dishes were perfect in execution (cooking time, tenderness, balance...) some mixes were too bold and the flavours were stepping on top of each other, not letting you enjoy the freshness of the produce.
As a summary: cozy, fair price, original. We’d give it another chance.
B.
Great food and service! Spent a week in Edinburgh and went to quite a few nice restaurants. The flea was by far my favorite.
S. B. (.
Absolutely gorgeous food and friendly staff. Gluten-free menu was superb, made our day!
A. C.
Delicious food, great service, reasonable prices! Highly recommended. Especially the bacon!
W. L.
If they haven't won a Michelin Bib Gourmand yet, they should! The two-course lunch offers delicious food at a great price and the Malaysian curry is especially delicious.
M. S.
One of the nicest meals I've ever had. We went for the pre theatre menu and were very happy with the value for money. Highly recommend this place.
B. P.
Our first meal after landing in Edinburgh. Good beer, great food, great staff, good prices. What more can you want?
Genuinely one of the best steaks I’ve ever had (Big Cow on the menu) and the mushrooms that come with it were to die for. Will definitely be back next time we’re in Edinburgh.
M. T.
We had a lovely dinner here. Food was great and servers were very sweet. Definitely recommend.
H. T.
Absolutely fabulous!!! The blend of flavours was just incredible! Great service accompanied by good fun. Highly recommend
P. B.
The staff were absolutely wonderful and the food delicious! The menu is limited if you're looking for vegan or vegetarian options.
N. W.
First impression belies a uniquely authentic experience - premises are small, seemingly unchanged from some earlier retail or trade use, possibly a dry cleaners or taxi office - a genuine welcome and straightforward service - food good, duck confit & vegetable curry excellent - the Umbrele Merlot a delight - we shall return soon .
L.
I visited to have a quick lunch-time dessert and was not disappointed! Great food, service and atmosphere
K. L.
Went here a few weeks ago for mother's day and still raving about the place. Great service from the staff and not a bad wait for food despite being busy. Everyone enjoyed the meal, the steak was cooked perfectly with the texture of butter, soup of the day was very different but lovely. Loved it and loved that it was fully gluten free!
L. H.
Visited with a friend and the food was so tasty!! Definitely be back. Lovely staff too.
S. M.
Lovely lunch at the Educated Flea. Popped in without a booking, but got a table for 2 and enjoyed the £12 for two courses lunch menu.
A. F.
Brunch is amazing!!. Very accommodating staff.
J. T.
Fabulous! Delicious food, nice atmosphere and lovely staff. You won’t be disappointed!
R. B.
Lovely lunch , service excellent ,friendly ,
The sea bass was perfect , very reasonable prices too
A. D.
Simply lovely. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, gorgeous food.
J. N.
The fish soup was amazing.
N. B.
The absolute best meal I've had in Edinburgh. The place itself is absolutely charming, and the staff were attentive without being overbearing. The food was sensational, and I really appreciated the time and effort that had been put into the astonishing menu that was executed impeccably. Anyone visiting Edinburgh that appreciates good honest food should go out of their way to visit this amazing restaurant - you won't be disappointed!
M. B.
Amazing food! The place is quite small and packed at lunch time but it's definitely worth a wait.
If only I lived in Edinburgh and could go there more often...
K. E.
Fantastic small restaurant in the New Town area of Edinburgh with a great menu and amazing food. Most of the diners in the small dining area were from out of town and had come on a recommendation- and these were well earned. Great and attentive service by knowledgeable staff, exciting menu options with fresh seasonal food and great local beer and spirits options.
V. g.
One of the most unique places I've been to! Super creative and delicious flavours!
A. W.
Such good food, great menu, very special. Please visit it wonderfully.
K. P.
We love supporting this business. The food is always to a high standard and very affordable for what it is. They do a great pre-theatre special and also offer a lunch special, a starter and main for only £15. If you’re looking for a nice place close to town, I’d highly recommend
R.
Delicious food and lovely lovely staff! Great value.
D. C.
What a fantastic find! Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, quick and very efficient! Food was a little different and totally delish! Was happy with the whole experience and intend to return. Thanks guys!
J. B.
Fantastic service! My husband is a very plain eater and when he could not find something that he would eat they created something for him. The food was delicious and I would recomend this restraint.
H. A.
Amazing food, very friendly staff and the service was good. A+ for the corn and coconut soup :) A must to go in Edinburgh
A. H.
Great for brunch. You can book by calling. Definitely worth securing your spot!
V. Z.
The food was delicious! I can totally recommend the starter with the feta cheese! The waiter was really attentive! The chef even made for us a special chocolate-amaretto sause for our ice cream at the end! Would totally come back and I recommend it 100%!!
G. F.
Great food. Nice ambiance and lovely staff. Was there for lunch with friends, had a great time.
C. G.
Educated Flea was recommended to us by friends from home and during our few days in Edinburgh we couldn't miss eating here! The food was delicious and the service fantastic. One not to be missed!
B. E.
Treated a friend to lunch and spent 2 hours enjoying both the food and the atmosphere. My pal tasted duck for the first time and loved it! So pleased to be able to experience a delicious and visually beautiful meal in a safe space. We shared the pistachio & feta dip with home made corn chips to start with. The prawns, miso butter, sriracha asparagus, tempura scraps starter was SO tasty and well presented. Pretty much everything on the menu appealed to us so we'll be back to try more dishes!
M. T. S.
This cracking wee place is one of our favourite places in Edinburgh. A real wee gem of a local restaurant along with ‘Three birds’ and the ‘Apiary’.. all part of the same group. Get out to one or all of them and be ready for a warm welcome and great food. You won’t be disappointed.
E. D.
Coeliac Safe & Great Tasting!
I’d highly recommend this small resturant.
Almost all of the menu is gluten free apart from items with bread, but these can be substituted for gluten free bread which is stored safely and separately.
C. M.
Back in on Friday night (well, 5pm!) for the first visit after lockdown.
Great meal - as always - and still the same rose wines on offer.
ps. Current " head waiter" a top chap!
G. C.
First visited Three birds very shortly after they opened over eight years ago.. Visited The Apiary and now finally The Educated Flea.. all great! A credit to the owners and staff. Great food...took American Friends who loved it!. Creative menu..always a culinary pleasure. Mediterranean bistro cuisine!
C. A.
Had an amazing and delicious meal (sorry was too busy eating to take pictures). Starts, mains, and dessert were all perfect, and the staff were fantastic!
The space is small and busy, so do call ahead and book a table. £70 for two three course meals and a bottle of wine is 100% worth it.
N. D.
Lovely food and very good value.
L. S.
Really enjoyed our tasty dinner, everything well flavoured and very pleasant service real treat.... Just one more thing maybe you could keep adding to vegetarian/vegan mains, let's move to have plant based dishes as for to the menu as fish and meet. Passion fruit and ginger pot was to die for.
J. B.
Amazing food and informative, friendly service
Would 100% recommend and come again
T. J.
I work here and all I can say is the staff are so helpful and very attentive at all times and very professional service all the time chefs do everything you ask or need
R. N.
Amazing Vegetarian food, very taste, fresh, food well prepared. Worth a visit.
P. F.
Visited here for the first time.. was only a small restaurant but atmosphere was calm and relaxing, my partner had the sea bass and I had beef blade , food was delicious and the waitress very welcoming... would most definitely recommend.
H.
Popped in here on a friend's recommendation. Great £14 lunch deal with small starter (grilled watermelon a delight) and large main (duck salad significant and you don't really need carbs) . Booked. Quite quiet and peaceful for a Fri lunch. Lovely staff. Happy with Covid procedures. Loos a bit tired but you're here for the wholesome food tbh. 😁
P. L.
One of the best place in Edinburgh. The host is a lovely lady and her restaurant is as rich as her personality. Everything was perfect and I recommend the stuffed chicken with blue cheese. Can't get enough. Run! What are you waiting for...?
I. K.
The best restaurant experience I ever had. Its cosy, beautifully decorated, amazing food which tastes fresh and is full of flavor, the staff is very friendly and made sure we had all we needed while making us feel welcomed. Locally sourced ingredients, drinks on the menue and a creative menue. I can't speak for others, but I honestly would give them 10 stars if I could. Thank you for making our evening so perfect!
l. T.
Excellent food and fantastic service. The only issue was with the 80's power ballads, given the ambiance, some jazz would have helped.
C. K.
Food and service first class helpful friendly staff
d. k.
The dining room is small and quite cozy. The staff are friendly and they know the menu very well. They have daily specials which are very nice. All the food we had was delicious and plated brilliantly! I would go back in a heartbeat
A. I.
I went there for brunch with my partner on a Saturday morning. The restaurant is cosy, but not too intrusive. Service is impeccable and the fresh cocktails are delightfully made (bloody mary in particular). But the food, as it should be, was the real star. Everything looked and tasted delicious. I couldn't actually finish everything but I wish I had as each bite was amazing. I'll definitely be back.
J. H.
Wonderful service, delicious freshly cooked seafood and very friendly staff. We were very impressed by our seafood platter between 2, all the seafood was cooked perfectly and there was plenty of it! Lovely restaurant inside too, very cosy and a perfect place for a date night.
E.
Firstly, almost the entire menu is gluten free, which is such a treat! They only labelled items which are not gluten free. And the wine range perfectly compliments the menu. I had a beautiful sauvingon blanc with my dinner.
Amazing food and brilliant value for money. I really enjoyed the wee fish taco starter I had and the hake main was divine. I also had a boozy affogato which was the perfect way to end the dinner. I was absolutely stuffed after it! The pre theatre menu is amazing value for money and the variety of food and wine is brilliant.
I would definitely recommend this place!
F. O.
Lovely welcoming staff, great menu, delicious food. Would definitely recommend.
N. N.
The food here is brilliant, lovely atmosphere, and all the staff are really friendly. Highly recommended.
j. f.
This is NOT as discribed in Google Maps... An Indian. This is far far superior with healthy (or not depending on your choice) delicious food, welcoming staff and pleasant atmosphere. 8 of us just had our Xmas lunch and all stuffed. High recommend this as 1 if the group needed gluten free and was easily accommodated.
H. C.
We had an early Christmas party here and it was perfect. The food was delicious and the staff were so accommodating. They made it a fun and relaxing experience. Will definitely be returning!
L. P.
Lovely lunch. A different sort of menu but everyone really enjoyed what they had. Good value and very friendly staff. The restaurant is small and it was full Tuesday lunchtime so would recommend booking.
H. M.
Had dinner here with my girlfriend who has many allergies, some of which are commonly present in the same dish. The staff at Educated Flea were more than happy to guide us through the menu and substitute parts of her meal which prevented her from having certain options.
The staff were well informed regarding the origins of their ingredients and therefore were aware of any "may contians" associated with the food.
P. D.
Came for brunch and had some of the best food in a long time. The staff are great and the place is small but clean and well decorated. The dishes are not your normal brunch items but they all work amazingly well and it's super cheap!
J. R.
Food was incredible and the staff were lovely
L. R.
Lovely food, nice atmosphere
C. R.
Fantastic food and the service was even better👍
J. R.
Lovely little place for brunch/lunch/supper. Delicious food - diverse and tasty menu and the staff were attentive and kind. Absolutely recommend :)
H. M.
Great food! Exciting menu with lots of choice. Really enjoyed the visit would highly recommend :)
M. F.
Not for beer lovers, not for fish eaters, but highly recommended for vegetarians.
Friendly service but a bit young, urban and arrogant. They started off by recommending an IPA brew instead of the porter I chose, when I had just mentioned how do not like hoppy beer. Maybe they don't know where IPA beer gets its sharp taste from... and not knowing good beer is forgivable, I suppose..
But then they brought the wrong side dish which was not a salad but a bowl of grilled „market vegetables" - mostly green, red and yellow capsicum... now if there is one vegetable I really do not like grilled it is Capsicum, and as we left most of that untouched although we were not sharp enough to send it back right away they were very apologetic and took it off the bill, … I can't really complain, but obviously cant say I enjoyed.
Regarding main course: I ordered the market fish and was unpleasantly greeted by the smell of a few strategically placed absolutely not fresh pickled sardines placed on top. Why would anyone spoil a dish of supposedly fresh fish with some stinky sardines?! Then again, the piece of seabass underneath it did not taste especially fresh. It wasn't bad, just dry and bland. Maybe I should have asked what day of the week is „market" day in Edinburgh before I ordered …
That is not to say that everything on my plate was awful. The mashed potato dish with olives and a dash of mango sauce were very subtle and original, I actually loved. The chef is probably a vegetarian. For vegetarians I might recommend this place. But if you want fish, steer clear.
S. G.
Thank you for a beautiful lunch today. Didn't know quite what to expect, what a warm welcome we got, nothing was too much trouble and the food was stunning, so tasty and different. Definately can't wait to return.
A. M.
Excellent venue - my lamb was perfection -still 'pink' and full of flavour and complimented by its 'supporting act'. The fact that I had excellent company only added to the overall experience.
J.
First visit with friends last night, service and food was fantastic! Had the most tasty fish cakes and vegetable curry, the presentation was lovely, it arrived on a platter with naan bread and coriander, chilli and sour cream in little silver dishes! Didn't have space for desert but wished I'd left some when I saw the Rocky Road and ice cream on the next table. Will definately be back very soon!!
M. A.
excellent customer care. an error occurred with our booking and the staff immediately apologised, taxi'd us to their sister restaurant , and gave us complimentary drinks. Food was fantastic there also (Apiary)
N. B.
Lovely varied menu, with plenty for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. Friendly, personal service. Will definitely be returning to try all the delicious dishes I didn't have room for.
N. w.
Different with attention to detail on the plate. Lunch chilli stack was pretty and tasty. Service was quick and happy with a smile and humour throughout. Prices ok and ingredient quality good. Will go again.
A. B.
Small place with great food and pleasant staff. Meals are diversified, well presented and very tasty. It is affordable and the staff make you feel welcome. Good experience!
A. P.
Great food in a very relaxed atmosphere. Educated Flea is a sister restaurant to Three Birds and Apiary, serving world cuisine, from French duck confit to Thai curry, to interesting bits and bobs like smoked mozzarella. Heartily recommend it for a dinner with a friend: laid back waiters and great food.
D. M.
Great food, friendly staff
J. C.
Not the largest of places, compact but tastefully decorated. The food is exceptional and the restaurant name is brilliant. Service very good, nothing is too much trouble.
J. S.
Visiting this place from London and we loved every bite. The staff were super friendly, helpful with tourist ideas and such good food. We also loved the cute ambience and neighbourhood. I highly recommend!
C. R.
All of our dishes were delicious. I had some gnocchi and they were the best I've had. It's usually busy, so make sure to book in advance.
H. M.
Not to be confused with the nearby go-to-BYOB-for-groups, this Khushi is a long standing institution famous for its naan bread and ornate chairs and restaurant decor. It's a lovely little place, worth a visit. They have a discount on menu price for carry out.
J. H.
Great new neighbourhood bistro. Small and very welcoming. Part of a trio of restos owned by 3 friends (Three Birds and the Apiary are the other two - get the "theme"?!) but each is different enough from the others to allow frequent visits without ever becoming samey. Great value set lunch (currently a tenner) and VG house wines in carafes, if preferred.
Broughton St. is the place to go in Edinburgh these days...
P. W.
Ate here today for brunch. Great and friendly service. One of the best brunches I've had. Thoroughly recommend. We had the Bruncheros and Confit Duck Hash Cakes
R. W.
Wonderful food and service. Great quality and reasonable prices.
C. A.
One of the best places to eat in Edinburgh. Plates are amazing, always a bit different with seasonal ingredients. Early bird is an awesome deal. Amazing desserts.
A.
Love the food, interesting and not run of the mill! Lots of gluten free. Great service. My favourite place to eat at the moment.
L. P.
Food was delicious, staff were very friendly, atmosphere was great. Loved the cocktails too
M. P.
Beautiful space, lovely people and excellent food: a classic 'triple threat'! Made our visit just a touch more special, in what is already such a welcoming city.
J. C.
Lovely meal. Well presented and tasty. Efficient service.
I. L.
Staff and food are both incredibly awesome. The vegan options are good especially the dessert. Definitely recommend it.
A. C.
I didn’t want it to end! The food was great, and I was able to combine a brunch appetizer with a lunch main course. The staff was friendly and very prompt. Can’t wait to come back.
J. F.
A friendly modern bistro serving great quality and contemporary dishes in a relaxed environment. Thoroughly recommended and in one of my favourite areas of Edinburgh.

The food here is very good, a must if you are around. It also has gluten free options and it is safe for coeliacs (staff knows about cross-contamination issues)
a. f.
Lovely little spot. We were menaces talking not paying attention and still the staff smiled! Food was interesting and varied... a comfy bistrot
S. M.
Just back from lunch at the Educated Flea. This is my third visit and yet again it did not disappoint. Interesting mix of delicious dishes, friendly staff and reasonable prices.
P. L.
Very good meal, children and family friendly. They have local micro-brewed beer and delicious venison burger. I highly recommend!
G. M.
Sensational love the food and the vibe. Is very small so while that adds to the ambience it also means that you are aware of the chat at the nearby tables.
D. P.
Lovely food, nice staff and good price. Nice atmosphere.
H. M.
Absolutely stunning food. Recommended very highly
S. K.
