Reviews of Grand Cafe
M. L.
Fabulous dinner after surprise Picture House visit, Venison was excellent as was the Sticky Toffee Mille Feuille. Staff lovely, attentive but unobtrusive.
D. C.
Couldn't imagine a more perfectly atmospheric setting for our wedding anniversary. Barry and the staff realised and made the whole visit truly exceptional. Food was perfect. Amazing value too.
It has become a classic Edinburgh institution. We will be back!
a. l.
Great dining experience at such an iconic building. Beautiful decorations, friendly staff. Had a two courses set lunch with a girlfriend. Appetizers we had duck liver parfait and it tasted good, mussel was disappointing. Main we had chicken breast which is very tender and salmon that is good too. Will come back to try the afternoon tea set.
M. C.
Beautiful afternoon tea in beautiful surroundings. Food was excellent, staff were delightful. Experience only mildly marred by all of the card machines dying at once.
G. M.
Highly recommend this place when you’re in Edinburgh! Lovely atmosphere with a live band and a classic early 1900s vibe. We came for cocktails which were tasty and beautifully presented. We were shown to our table and our order was taken quickly soon after we sat down, and cocktails arrived in good time! Definitely recommend the cocktails and good service, or even if you just want a classy place to have a tea/coffee while in Edinburgh. Would 100% come again.
M. B.
Enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea here with my Daughter. We did not have any dietary requirements but this would have been catered for if necessary. Good selection of sandwiches, scones with jam and cream on the side and cakes. Choice of coffee or tea and cups refilled as necessary. Friendly and efficient service. Would definitely recommend.
J. B.
Lovely venue and atmosphere for a afternoon tea, with tasty and very creative selections of savouries and sandwiches.
The pity is on the service. No water was offered until you ask. No explanation on the food so the ice cream melted before we noticed. No extra plates offered for the savoury and scones. And you wait ages to pay the bill.
One sandwich came looking like half eaten, the manager explained that is because the bread is not flat. That makes sense but still doesn’t look good to customers.
B. K.
We had an amazing experience, went out for drinks in an extremely busy period
We were lucky that the friendly staff at the Grand found a table for us without booking.Good selection of whisky and fantastic tasty and well presented cocktails! If you love them, go for the tree of cocktails!
A. M. D.
This cafe is beautiful in the amazing Scotsman Hotel. Great drinks and vegan options for food. Service is great and ambience is beautiful! Recommended!
M. Z.
The place is very beautiful and the staff is very helpful and friendly. The meals are very tasty but I don’t give more than 3 stars because of incredibly small portions. I usually don’t mind places with small portions but there’s a line to this. I ordered the main course with salmon and side chips. When I finished I was still hungry and I am not a man with big appetite. I needed to go somewhere else to feel fed. I don’t recommend this place for more than a drink.
K. G.
Really nice food at reasonable prices. Friendly service. Good atmosphere and vibe. One of the better restaurants in Edinburgh.
N.
It was quite comfortable there, the food was good, but not amazing. The Pithivier was a bit sour however the cheesecake was very good.
V. D.
We had a lovely evening here. Started with a cocktail which was very nice. Reasonable price and a good selection to choose from. Then we went to the movie house and watched What a wonderful life. It was brilliant and a great film to get you in the mood for Christmas.
We returned to the grand Cafe for our dinner. The Turkey was really nice, as was the fish. Deserts were lovely. Would definitely recommend for a night out - or a treat for someone’s birthday or Christmas
J. J.
It’s a gem. Nice staffs and atmosphere. We went there for snacks after late lunch, ended up ordering more than snacks(but less for dinner). Still the staffs were nice and the foods were great. I highly recommend this place!
j. j.
Friendly and relaxed atmosphere, food is delicious - lovely surroundings - a slightly odd thing to note, but the carpet has gone beyond what I would call faded grandeur.
Nevertheless, I would highly recommend eating out here.
J. W.
Great surroundings and furnishings. Food tasted great however service was slow.
S. M.
Food was good. But service was exceptionally slow, slowest I’ve seen in my life. They gave a 1.5 hour dining slot, mine being from 1-2.30. Arrived a few mins before 1 and had my orders placed by 1.08. Starters arrived at 1.15. Mains arrived at 2.20. Never had to wait more than 1 hour in my life.
The person at the table near me also had some dishes that didn’t arrive before he had to leave .
V. E.
We loved our visit to this place! Went for afternoon tea, and everyone was super helpful and kind. Very serviceminded. Food was delicious. Great coffee.
G. H.
Lovely coffee, bit more expensive than others but worth it. Well located, although building works outside is a temporary obstacle. Very well fitted out.
A. O.
I had afternoon tea which was lovely . The table was set up in the upper gallery area and most of the time we had live music piano player, double bass.etc.Very enjoyable time..
T. G.
They open late so it’s good!
Came here during Easter. Tried their Easter menu. The chicken liver was so so, a little bit salty but not too bad. The Bass was dry and not much flavor. Underneath the Bass the seafood was okay, tomato sauce based.
Overall good service but really average food. Tea was nice though.
L. L.
We had some whisky at the Grand Cafe during the summer. What I found quite remarkable, was the live piano. I must say it is way better for brunch. but super charming atmosphere any time throughout the day!
Late in the afternoon we found it rather empty, but same high quality drinks, and It did offer a wide choice of drinks menu. I visited Scotland as I had a whisky tour and this Cafe completed my whisky tasting experience while in Edinburgh.
C. A.
I couldn't help dropping in to such a beautiful building and the interior was not to be missed with eye catching towering coffered ceilings that look immaculate plus a wraparound filigreed balcony. We paid a laughable amount for a bog standard Riesling but isn't that always the way? It was refreshing on a warm evening and that was enough. Still we decided to pass on anything more as it was decided The Scotsman seemed more style over substance.
G. M.
A fabulous bar on North Bridge. The decor and atmosphere inside are both sophisticated and elegant. The live pianist after 10pm is a treat, it’s a shame he didn’t start sooner. It is refreshing to have such a beautifully decorated bar in this area, especially one with this level of detail. My only criticism is the very slow table service.
K. E.
Food was very nice but service was very slow. The actual restaurant is very grand, maybe they were short of staff, but worth a visit.
E. I.
Interior design
Old fashioned but interesting. Beautiful chandelier.
Service
No introduction from the server . No explanation about the menu
Ordered “An Ode to the Phiz” server said that they don’t have Gin that goes in. And left me with this information, wasn’t offered any alternative.
Asked glass of Pino Noir same story : “we do not have it. Only by the bottle”
Well alternatively options to provide would be lovely.
Food delivered with closed hand.
Server- is the person who provides service and not just an order taker
Food
Starter was Scallops, interesting solution to serve it with Copa was absolutely delicious
Main course was “Lamb rump “
Bravo chef! Delicious, tender . Comes with wild mushrooms
Dessert was “Trio” Creme brûlée was extant
Rice pudding need to be improved
Chocolate with raspberry sorbet was delicious
Overall:
Interior 10/10
Service 6/10
Food 9/10

What a shadow of its former glory! Until recently it was a very upmarket place with amazing food in the fabulous surroundings of the former "Scotsman" newspaper offices. If I wipe that from my mind, I am glad this place has reopened at all. It is now shabby chic (please clean the gorgeous big mirror that is the highlight of the back wall!). The food was surprisingly good and the staff very relaxed and friendly. I'll try it again.
j.
We enjoyed an excellent pre-theatre dinner. Our server was really friendly, helpful and attentive to our party's particular dietary requirements (low gluten).
We ordered a wide selection of starters and mains from the menu, which were without exception delicious, and also well presented. Our fries were just the right side of crispy.
The decor of the restaurant was first class, and felt truly christmassy. I appreciated the engraved glassware for that premium touch.
Overall, we would recommend the Grand Cafe to anyone looking for an upmarket but friendly dining experience in Edinburgh city centre.
D. M.
This is a beautiful restaurant and the food was superb. The staff were excellent as well (hugh thanks again to Anna and Julia for dealing with an issue outside their and our control). They showed professionalism and calm and made for a wonderful evening. Staff such as these deserve to be very highly valued in these trying times.
A. R.
Wow what an afternoon tea! We were stuffed, the food is excellent and the service by our waiter Alex was brilliant. We booked vi the website and had a lovely table prepared.
I would suggest you book or call ahead for an afternoon tea to avoid disapointment as we came close to missing out even though it's not clarified on the menus, website or chalk board.
My only niggle is the state of the bathrooms for a high end cafe and hotel they were a little grubby and worn out. But that's nothing serious when the food is good.
E. P. N.
Amazing service and unbeatable tea. Scones were really good too.
s.
Beautiful place, great food. Fancy enough to really dress up, but happily accepts tourists in jeans and teeshirts
B. J.
The staffs were so casual..... They never came to get our order. And we’ve waited so long to get our dishes. And the meal wasn’t cooked perfectly.
A. H.
The service was very slow, after we asked for the bill it took over 15 min for someone to come. We even had to ask another waitress. But the restroom was very clean and the aesthetic of the place was nice as well.
M. C.
Lovely food not too expensive. Good choice. Relaxed atmosphere
I. I.
Fancy place to have dinner or at least a good gin. Really impressive decor and very good service.
J. w.
Truly lovely evening at the Grand Cafe with friends. Gorgeous surroundings enhanced by lush cocktails, tasty food and just the nicest waiter ever, his first evening in the role and he managed the substitute cocktail situation, our shared starters and ever more tipsy orders. Thanks Andy and all the Scotsman staff.
G. S.
Great for some drinks or a bite to eat. If you liek gin their "from Edinburgh with love" cocktail hits the spot.
L. G.
It's okay but if you want afternoon tea make sure you book up before you go .the last time we went we did not have to so was a bit disappointed
M. R.
Great food and great service. The Enlightenment drink is amazing.
D. Z.
Just had afternoon tea for two today 6/1/22 absolutely delicious and brilliant service well done the Scotsman team.
d. f.
Beautiful space where we had a lovely morning tea. We told our waiter we didn’t have much time as we had a train to catch and the service was super quick.
J. F.
Service was 10/10.
Food was lovely although a pared back menu. Comfortable and classy surroundings. Nice cocktails too
J. M.
Fabulous afternoon tea. Great service.
L. B.
What a spectacular setting for a spectacular cocktail! Pity that they add 10% service charge regardless of group size. Staff very nice and helpful
K. S.
Scottish breakfast with Black Coffee. Simple but well executed, I’d come here again for sure. Service was friendly enough.
R. S.
We went there for drinks after dinner and we love the G & T selection! We enjoyed drinking them.
I. B.
The restaurant itself is a beautiful building and well decorated, giving the impression of luxury without being too fussy.
The food was very tasty (mostly) and good quality. However there were a few things not quite right. The small potato in our haggis starter tasted of charcoal and nothing else, despite not looking burned, very odd. the plates were a little greasy round the edges and were not hot, and my lamb main was on just warm, especially the potatoes.
The service was a little odd as well. The staff were handing us the plates rather than moving round the table to place them down, not what I's expect for this kind of place. They were also a bit absent and took a while to get attention, and after mains were cleared they never returned to offer deserts/coffees etc. we had to call them over to get the bill. Could be better.
If the service was a little slicker and the food hotter, we would go back at some point.
C. S.
Very nice and expectedly on the pricey side.
Staff impeccable and attentive. Food equally good.
We'd be happy to come back.
J. W.
Staff very friendly and helpful. Attended for an afternoon tea and food was lovely.

Summary: fabulous decor, excellent food, a more relaxed atmosphere, and live music make this one of the best place spend an afternoon drinking tea or an evening sampling the excellent cocktail menu.
Full: Excellent in every aspect. The decor is imaculately adorned with beautiful marble pillars, period woodwork, green velvet, and an abundance of wonderful plant life. The Grand Cafe is cozy and relaxed in feel, despite what one might expect given the luxurious hotel it is attached to. The staff are lovely and friendly though occasionally a little unprofessional. This can all be passed off though as I don't believe the Grand Cafe is attempting to be the pinnacle of luxury. It is a cafe after all, not a restaurant or tea room. The seating is comfortable and views are excellent. I would recommend booking for any time past 9pm during the week and past 12 on weekends. There is live music every evening and in the afternoons on the weekend. The musicians are talented and play a mix of classics and covers. The food selection is excellent and uses some of the highest quality ingredients. The high tea and brunch in particular are excellent. They also offer a section of beautifully made cakes to accompany an afternoon cup of tea should a full platter be too much. The Grand Cafe is in my opinion a staple of Edinburgh's dining scene. A place to always fall back to, assured that you will not leave disappointed.
C. G.
I love this establishment with its 19th century ambience. I have thoroughly enjoyed my visits and found the drinks and food to be good value for money. Visitors to the city I have taken there have been very impressed by the decor and the food and service. One thing I would like to see would be the customers dressing up a little to match the building. I hope you survive the lockdown as I really miss you.
C. S.
Enchanting, classy and elegant. Bar, Cafe, and meals served at reasonable prices. The cocktails were great! The service was excellent and friendly. This place is ideal for dates and to reconnect with your favorite people. Very intimate seating with plush velvet couches and chairs. It takes you back to the glamour of the 20's.
V. J.
Dropped by to see The Scotsman building and decided to stop at the Grand Cafe for mid-morning tea and scones with clotted cream and jam.
Service by Arturo was efficient and hospitable. The scones were delicious (albeit a tad dry) and the tea was a tad bitter for our taste (we chose the Breakfast Tea since they did not have Darjeeling Tea or Second Flush Darjeeling Tea).
A pleasant experience all-in-all and we loved the Gallery upstairs. A stop is recommended.
R. L.
Our family met up, late Sunday morning, for brunch at the Grand Cafe. Excellent service from helpful, friendly staff. Great menu something for everyone. Food was very good and reasonably priced. As we ate musicians played music up on the gallery. Fabulous building, marble stairs, pillars, ornate cornicing. All very very civilised and most enjoyable. Thoroughly recommend
H. H.
Excellent surroundings, beautiful building, comfortable, nice atmosphere, decent prices however having to wait 35 minutes for a ham sandwich with no apology spoiled everything, left disappointed.
A. L. G.
Perfect place for a night out in an elegant restaurant.the quality of the food that we got was not at the top (probably was my mistake get a burger in such place). The fries were just reheated microwaved and the cauliflower was partially raw.
For that place I was expecting much more but I enjoyed the place anyway.
P. A.
Good evening Internet, all is not quite right at the grand café. The service appears to lack the required experience, several dishes were brought to the wrong tables, and a wait between my main and my wife's main was around 5minutes. The food is good (not great) my mussels were plentiful but a touch bland; according to the gentleman on the next to ours his steak was well done when he ordered medium. The ambiance was good and architecturally the building is fantastic. After you've dined you fell overwhelmingly unfulfilled by the Grand café's potential.
A. C.
The Grand Cafe is exceptional, the seating is very comfortable allowing you to enjoy the opulent surroundings, we only had a sandwich but that was huge together with accompanied chips. Service is good, Nd there is plenty of room between tables. The room is tastefully opulent, we enjoyed our 1st visit so much we returned the next day.
This is part of the Scots man Hotel.
S. B.
Nothing too special. Kind of overwrought and old style. Probably the perfect place for grandma but for us was just a touch out of fashion. Coffee and cakes were fine. Service a wee bit slow. Toilets were clean and fancy though. Plus a neat old printing press near the loo.
M. W.
Went here for breakfast - great food and even better service. There was a special winter cocktail menu on the table which looked so good we came back for drinks in the evening. Also had a very good selection of Gin and Scotch
D. H.
The grand cafe was very impressive, but the service was so slow waited half hour just for a sandwich but still worth going in to have a coffee
R. E.
Beautiful restaurant, nice food, terrible service. The decor is stunning and everything we ordered was well presented and tasty, but on a Sunday at lunch, the service was both rushed and slow (!), forgetful, and indifferent. Our order was taken but no drinks offered and even when we asked, drink menus appeared, but no one returned to take our drinks order. It took several requests to get the bill. Service was just not up to the standard of the interiors and prices.
R. M.
Lovley decor, fab staff and great place to chill.
J. T.
Impressive decor and decent service but -2 stars for the actual food.
K. S.
Very slow service, 2 hours for 2 course, quite disappointing 😞
S. R.
Delicious food and great service!
l. m.
Great afternoon tea place. Helpful friendly staff & cozy atmosphere. I like to try different tea experiences & this was the best dessert selection I've had. Usually places make the desserts too rich, too "foo foo", just too much but these are light & delicious.
P. T.
Very nice location. Nice food
M. M.
This new restaurant & bar on Edinburgh's North Bridge is part of the Scotsman Hotel. It was formerly a bistro but closed and now a busy facility again. The old bistro had a grand winding staircase to the upper floor where there was additional seating for diners. They have an A la Carte menu and until early evening a 2 courses for £14.95 deal. We opted for this as it had Venison burger. Sadly if we return the venison burger will not be my choice. I've eaten venison many times but all I can say was the burger had no real taste. I rarely eat burgers but thought it was worth a go. I have commented about this on another site but no response. Tried to speak to a manager before leaving as I felt the burger was poor and wrongly advertised as venison. It was busy and choose not to wait around. Otherwise it is a pleasant place to eat and drink.
P. K.
Service and cocktails very very good 👍
L. S.
Great afternoon tea. Amazing service. Very well looked after. Beautiful surroundings

Tried to get a table on christmas day, unfortunately the cafe was fully booked so we booked a lunch the day after. Had an amazing lunch at the Grand Café today. Good food in nice portions. Brilliant cocktails! No regrets 😉
B. B.
Everything was great but we didn’t get all of the food that should have come which put a dampener on the experience
I. H.
Service not up to the standard it should of been but the food was very good
A. M.
Every one should try the grand cafe. What a treat. Set menu reasonably priced. Super tasty. Service great. Given plenty time 2 relax and enjoy lunch. Defiantly going back to try cream tea. Beautiful building.
R. S.
A lovely grand building in the heart of Edinburgh offering a lovely range of food and drink. Nice cocktails at reasonable prices. I'd love to see a refurn though as they velour seating and tables and chairs aren't really as high class as the venue deserves. Add in some dividers to make it more intimate and you would have a 5 star venue.
A. D.
Great surroundings, but staff were clearly struggling with the large numbers - this was Saturday evening during the Festival - so our food order took ages to appear, but was very enjoyable when it did. Would definitely consider coming back, but at a less frenetic time
p. m.
We had a wonderful brunch at the Grand Café - the service was excellent, the the food was delicious and the surroundings were beautiful. Can't wait to come back!
J. K.
Been here a few times and live music is always great. But once finished the recorded music played was pretty dire. Need to change type of music or I certainly wouldn't come back.
M.
Nice atmosphere and the drinks aren't too bad either
M. M.
I recommend the marmalade sponge. Amazing! Comes with a scoop of ice cream. The flat white may have been made by just pressing a button, or maybe not, but it sure looked like it though. 5 out of 5 if it were not for the coffee.
T. H.
Good food and the building is amazing!
J. G.
Amazing food, interior & staff - especially Cedric - we have been few times and definitely we will come back when visit Edinburgh next time. No photos as the food was so tasty that gone straight away :)
M. P.
Best afternoon tea in Scotland
If I could have rated more stars I would have, super ambience, excellent staff and the food was divine! Cant wait to go back, special thanks to Lisa for making our visit so special
T. M.
Beautiful place. Food just average. Service ok. I think it wants to be top class but just doesn't have the skill.
R. B.
Food was excellent. The atmosphere is elegant yet casual. Service was friendly and attentive. Well worth a visit.

Fairly disappointed with this place - it could and should be much better. Won't be back I'm afraid, especially with much better pubs immediately nearby.

(Translated) The undisputed must be on your list of places to visit in Edinburgh. In addition to a great location in the city center and a beautiful view outside the window, this place impresses with a beautiful Art Nouveau interior. Professional service, an interesting selection of gin and the afternoon tea offer with a very good price-quality ratio made a very positive impression. A place worth visiting and recommending. I wish you a wonderful visit :) best regards
