Reviews of Hemingway's
T. P. E.
Genuinely great experience. Very cosy and intimate atmosphere. Charming and down to earth staff, helped recommended drinks and explain the menu. Great selection of both classic, and original cocktails. The portion sizes were quite small but that's more than made up for in the quality of ingredients and taste and still left feeling pleasantly full. Although it felt like eating at a fancy restaurant, the bill was very reasonable. Will definitely be going back.

Had my birthday party here. The staff were fantastic, very helpful and gave a bottle of bubbly on the house to celebrate my birthday. Food was very tasty. Thanks for making my first birthday out of lock down special. 😊
R.
Delicious vegan options. Lovely spacious dining. Pleasant, attentive staff.
M. S.
I really enjoy the food here, and their cocktails are brilliant. The only reason I deduct a star is that the last two times we visited the service was incredibly slow. It wasn’t busy either so unsure why they didn’t come and check on us outside now and again so I could order another one of those amazing margaritas.
T. C.
Really loved this place - staff were friendly and helpful, the cocktails were excellent and the few hours we were there flew by. We will return without doubt!
S. “. S.
Had a great evening with drinks and a bit of food. The outdoor space was lovely and the customer service was excellent. Special shout-out to the service of the lovely lady (Rebecca I think, sorry) who went above and beyond for us

Birthday lunch at the Hemingway’s today. We loved it. The restaurant is decorated with taste and the theme is everywhere even in the toilets. Beautiful restaurant. The food was tasty and the dessert to die for! The Nutella chocolate cake with rose sorbet and pistachio was sooo good! We had two very nice alcool-free cocktails 🍹. We had drinks, a meal, a dessert, a cheese board and dessert and we paid only £42. Very competitive prices for the overall quality 👌🏻
We were pleased to see that everything was in place with the COVID situation. They even checked the temperature at the entrance which is reassuring. Please note that due to the COVID doors are open and it is quite chilly inside - bring a nice scarf with you if you want to feel cosy.
Also, the menu is different for lunch. You have a Brunch Menu until 3 pm. We’ll come back at evening as we’d like to try more from the chef.
We both had a great time and will definitely come back. Thank you 🙏

Visited for a light meal with my daughter at tea time. Small plates were ideal and with an excellent selection of meat and vegetarian options. Food was delicious served by very helpful and friendly staff.
The ladies toilets are stunning and even have a swing for your entertainment. Useful particularly if there is a queue. Love a nice toilet! 😂
Drinks menu looked lovely too.

Visited Hemmingways with my girlfriend this evening and was taken back by the decor at first and the standard of the cocktails, Damien was more than helpful in letting us know what cocktail was best for us both, hats off to the bar and the quality of staff! Will definitely be back and recommend to our friends

Informal, friendly Hemingway themed pub/restaurant. We shared a few dishes. All delicious. Great service and dog friendly.
R. P.
I would not recommend for brunch. We had chicken and waffles. Chicken was not fried chicken, was dry Grilled chicken which had a weird taste. The waffles were not homemade and were the cheap sugary packaged waffles you get at bad train station coffee stalls. It came with a salad which looked fine but didn't eat this because chicken and waffles shouldn't come with salad. The dish was £10 and I would say was worth about £1.50 in ingredients. I have been a few times for dinner and drinks and have always had a good time. Service is usually good but this time was fairly inattentive.
H. P.
Brilliant, the flatbread brunch is too a piece of advice don't eat before you go as its huge 😀 fab choice of drink also
D. W.
The staff are very welcoming pleasant and friendly. The food was delicious. Well recommend.
C. L.
Hemmingways is easily the best bar by the shore. The staff are super friendly and sociable and service is prompt. Even the regional managers came and spoke to us.
The cocktail and drunk selection is very extensive and there are drinks for every taste. The food is also very good, and the heated terrace is the icing on the cake. It is definitely my go to bar moving forward
G. S.
Great cocktails, good atmosphere and handy for the bus stop back to the City

First time here, loved the indoor, beautiful and nice atmosphere, lot of character.
I found all the staff friendly and caring, a special thanks to Tassia ( tall blonde girl!)
We sat outside, I found the tables too close to each others (like my chair and the one behind me were touching and no much space to move) however when few tables got clear I asked to be moved.
Apparently the menu changes so I can only speak for the recent times. The food was OK but in my opinion nothing to go back for, I don't mind spending money for small portions if they are good but we found it "average" and maybe we expected more from the flat bread, it's very dry. It's a great spot for drinks and if you want something to eat with drinks but wouldn't suggest it for a proper meal.

Lacks substance - I wanted to really like this place, but it was a mixed, generally below par experience. We looked at the menu online, to find the prices had increased by about 20% and some of the dishes were no longer available. Having one menu online with one set of prices and another when you get there, left one feeling a bit hoodwinked. The food was mostly beautifully presented but unfortunately quite tasteless & without seasoning. One standout was the prawns, otherwise was mediocre at best. We decided to skip dessert and go somewhere else. Service was patchy, one server was decidedly terse. I would possibly return for a drink, but not for food. All fur coat and no knickers, as the saying goes.
S. W.
Lovely looking place, very nice inside. Choice of food is odd as it is either tapas or flatbreads and nothing else, not much choice with the tapas. Quite pricey for such small dishes. Good beer and friendly staff, worth a visit.
O. H.
Delicious food and nice drinks in lively setting well looked after by friendly staff
L. k.
lovely drinks but poor booking service.
I booked a table for drinks a few weeks in advance specified outside in particular as that what it said to do on website, however on arrival placed inside in restaurant area and mentioned it was meant to be outside. I was just majorly disappointed as this was meant to be cocktails by the river for my mum coming to visit. It was meant to be a special occasion there wasn't much of an apology. The campari spritz was nice so can't complain about the drinks
S. R.
Went for lunch and drinks with group of friends. We were served and looked after by Craig and Rachel. They were very attentive and friendly. Both of them were very lovely and friendly and always checking in our table for more drinks, water or food. We would like to thank both of them for making our day and for being so professional and friendly.
I. L.
Great atmosphere, great drinks. Definitely recommend Damian's concoctions!
A. Q.
Last minute decision to go here as places were just about taking last kitchen orders. The staff were great and the food was excellent. Nice surprise .
D. G.
Good quality mirrors in the guys toilet in this innovative Leith bar. However,I found the lighting to be a little on the dark side for my liking. This may help to cover a multitude of sins for many but there are some of us who like to check ourselves out. 'The mirror man.' The mirror equality crusader....!
P. C.
Fantastic food, amazing cocktails, absolutely worth a visit
R. D.
The staff here worked so incredibly hard the first Friday back after lockdown was lifted. They made sure everyone was seen and we're super polite despite some customers being a bit disrespectful. The Aperol spritz and cocktails were delicious! The beer garden area outside is perfect for people watching and it's covered and heated too. Can't wait to come back!
S. B.
Extremely friendly staff who where very tentative to you when having a drink. Reasonable prices too with availability all night. Would 100% recommend for food and drinks
K. G.
Just great. Perfect service, truly delicious food, perfect cocktails and the best toilets I've ever seen. This is a place you need to visit
B. F. m.
Great place . Lovely. Staff . Reasonable prices. One of my favourites.
M. T.
Stopped one a whim and had a lovely brunch here on Sunday. Very tasty French toast (the bacon was outstanding) , and same for the avocado toast. Prices are very, very reasonable and the place is really well put together and feels very warm. Great staff as well - say near to the bar and since it wasn't busy had a great chat. Will come back when in town.
J. H.
Fab! I loved my Hemingway old fashions and the Glaswegian bar tender was a class act. Lovely evening. Great service. 10/10
B. S.
Fantastic cocktails and friendly staff!
S. M.
Great deco, service and cocktails are amazing. Has a fantastic atmosphere and a warm welcome.
W. F.
Unique decor. Friendly staff. Excellent food and drinks.
J. B.
The food was ok, but nothing spectacular, and overpriced for what it was. Same for the cocktails - I've had much better versions of the same cocktails elsewhere. Don't think I'd go back.
A. S.
My wife and I stumbled across this new bar and restaurant and what followed was very special. Chris the manager was attentive, passionate about their food and the whole place. Food is based around sharing plates and all were bursting with flavour. A real gem of a place which has got so much potential as it’s only been open 4 months. Will definitely be back and recommend.
C. D.
Such a great night! Staff (especially manager Craig) were WONDERFUL! Cocktails were great and lovely outside seating area. Craig went ABOVE and beyond to accommodate us! Thanks Craig!!!!
I.
Love this place especially the £3 Amstel! One of the cheapest pints in Edinburgh!!
C. B.
Amazing Service! Can’t wait to be back! Staff are amazing! And they were extremely helpful when we needed help picking drinks based on our personal preferences! X
A. C.
Though I'm not sure if this is what Ernest Hemingway himself would have put together, this is a lovely bar with a nice selection of drinks and great atmosphere. The cocktails are absolutely delicious and the staff are friendly. The bathrooms feel very opulent, and are a great spot for a selfie if one is warranted. The drinks are a little on the pricey side, but given its stellar location on the Shore and the craftsmanship of the drinks, it is a fair price. The front room cannot seat large parties, but the restaurant is roomy while still being cozy, and a perfect place for a special occasion dinner or a nice little treat. The only thing that I would have liked is for the menus to be a bit easier to read - their pages are placed in Hemingway's books with little photo corners on the pages, but they are not terribly secure and it is easy to lose the pages. Other than that, it's a lovely place.
D. C.
Great food let down by service. It all just gets thrown at you way too fast. We were less than 20 minutes from sitting down at our table to 4 of our 5 dishes being delivered. Despite asking to slow down, we were still done within 55 minutes. And overhearing the waiting staff celebrating "one more to go and then we're outta here!!" really makes you feel valued. Shame to only give 3 stars as the food and wine were both lovely but really needs to get the service aspect right to compete.
K. K.
Food was absolutely delicious!! They have a great selection of food and drink, staff were excellent, very attentive and so friendly. Decor is amazing, especially the bathrooms! Great atmosphere, couldn't have asked for better!
S. W.
Stumbled across this restaurant on a Saturday afternoon looking for a family lunch.
Its tapas style restaurant on a beautiful location. The server accommodated all 9 of us with two kids.
Very neat, clean and modern restaurant with chic toilets.
The menu is simple and easy to understand.
We ordered quite a bit and it kept on coming in turns. The food is very good. There were few food items not available on the menu but everything else was perfect.
The waiting team was also very polite and helpful.
My steak was small but bloooooodyyyy good. I don't like Haggis but the Haggis bon bon was cooked to perfection (Even I couldn't help myself trying a couple).
Try the different breads and they are divine. The deep fried Haloumi Cheese was brilliant.
The craft ales also complimented the food.
If you are in Leith do give this restaurant a try. I can assure you won't be disappointed.
t. b.
Great food, great drinks, but more importantly a very cosy and friendly environment. Home to some great characters, the staff and service was hard to forget.
Eating here was a wonderful experience, but I strongly suggest you dont leave without sitting at the bar. With comfortable seating, calm decor, and a skilled yet lively bar manager, Rishi, you will thoroughly enjoy yourself.
Ask him for a drink, you won't be disappointed.
T. A.
Amazing place, lovely food and drinks and amazing staff. Would definitely recommend!!
A. P.
Bit slow service however did seem to be busy! Nice place though and drinks were good too! Server was kind and apologetic!
E. O.
Just had dinner in Hemingway’s, absolutely stunning meal, every course was cooked perfectly and we couldn’t decide what we liked most! We ordered Halloumi fries, Korean style Cauliflower, Confit Duck Leg, Chicken thigh and a prosciutto flatbread, for drinks we ordered a Hemingway daiquiri and a ‘to hell with luck’ with two espresso martinis after our meal, again only excellent things to say about them. All the staff were so friendly and so so attentive, amazing team! The decor is amazing, so unique that it makes the place stand out, especially the bathrooms, and make sure to get a picture on the swing! The best night of our weekend away by a mile, couldn’t recommend the place more! If I could give 10 stars I would!
D. B.
Amazing place with amazing food and service. Nothing is a bother for the staff. We purchased a voucher and were treated wonderfully which mades go back twice already. White wine from New Zealand is fantastic.
I. R.
The staff make the place!!! Rishi and Craig are absolute gems and helped me pull off an elegant surprise birthday party! The drinks are delicious, the space is stunning and the service is perfect! I wish I could give more stars!

Stumbled on this place by accident, and glad we did. We shared a flat-bread and various tapas, and it was exceptional. Service was top-drawer and decor quality and taste also fantastic. Absolutely over the moon to have found such a gem
G. G.
Lovely place with lovely food at a really good price. They were short staffed so service was slow but the staff were friendly.
R. G.
Fab new place on commercial Street. A good selection of small dishes ideal for sharing at affordable prices. The vino is certainly not bad either!
Freindly staff and nice decor to boot. Still in the process of working it all through, but all in all a satisfying evening beside the water of Leith.
a. l.
Excellent service, good selection of food and drinks. Great atmosphere with banter with the staff. All round really impressed with this new restaurant.

Lovely bar and restaurant with an interesting menu. Looked forward to trying the food. We had pricey wine but well worth the price
K. M.
Nice place but half the beer taps were off and the cocktail was slow despite it being very quiet. Hoping they're just teething problems!
A. K.
