Reviews of Makars Gourmet Mash Bar (Edinburgh)

The best sausage and mash I have ever had. I attended after finding this place whilst researching for my trip to Edinburgh, and I’m glad I found it. The food was wholesome and delicious. The sausages were unbelievable and the spicy mash was perfect for spice lovers. The beef fell apart when cutting into it and tasted delicious with the gravy. The puddings also deserve a mention as they were very tasty. The atmosphere was great and the staff were friendly. This is definitely a place that I will return to in the future and recommend to family and friend visiting Edinburgh. It’s also an independent restaurant so I’m glad to support it.

Fantastic, you won't regret coming here! Absolutely delicious food with a great variety of choices. For a starter, we ordered the scotch egg which was very good. For mains, we both ordered the lamb shank and it did not disappoint. Beverley, our waitress, was super friendly. Food came out within a reasonable time, it was hot, tasted fresh and moreish. I highly recommend booking a table ahead of time as this place does get really busy!

Good service and a good place to try haggis. We got the haggis starter, soup of the day which was spicy tomato soup (yum), the beef shoulder on cheddar chive mashed potatoes, and the award winning sausage on the chili mashed potatoes.
Would recommend the haggis and the beef shoulder and the cheddar chive mashed potatoes. Spicy tomato soup was good too!
The chili mashed potatoes were really what we were expecting- more of like sweet n sour chili and the sausage wasn’t anything special

Delicious! The staff screwed up our order of haggis and forgot about it but they ameliorated the situation by taking it off our bill. Speedy service otherwise and the food is well worth it. The potato’s are not that creamy but they’re very tasty. Highly recommend the sausage, which was the best thing we had. First time trying haggis and it was great! The gravy was super tasty!

Delicious food with generous portions. Ideal location and extremely friendly & attentive staff. The variety of the menu was extensive considering the gimmick of the restaurant "mash-bar", and the facilities were incredibly clean. Prices may appear high but it's completely worth it, and considering the location the cost is to be expected. One of the best meals I've had in a while. Would definitely recommend this independent restaurant for lunch or dinner if you're in the area.
Marvellous.

If you don't visit this amazing place while you're in Edinburgh you'll regret it.
One of the best meals i have ever had. I opted for the veg sausages with cheese and chive mash and it was insanely good, followed with an incredible gluten free brownie, which I didn't need, but hey I'm on holiday.
The staff were so great and the atmosphere was very relaxed.

I was so excited to visit on our trip to Edinburgh, and it did not disappoint. We had the haggis with black pudding mash and boar sausages with the bacon and spring onion mash and it was also scrumptious!! The desserts were very yummy as well would definitely recommend.

Wow what a great restaurant. Everything was amazing. Staff were very friendly, helpful and well trained.
Food was delicious. So many good mashes.
We had the sausages with cheese and onion mash. Also the beef shoulder with the bacon mash. Tried the haggis as an appetiser.
Highly recommend this if you love mash.

Delicious veggie haggis (yes, delicious haggis that’s veggie friendly!). The staff were incredibly friendly, and I had a great time chatting to some fellow Yankees across from me.
After the host was super kind and moved some reserved tables around to find me a spot (I didn’t ask for that, but wow was that unexpectedly amazing service and truly appreciated). My server was very fun and nice to talk to and even hooked me up with some truly spicy mash under my veggie haggis. I don’t normally get to feel a pleasant burn in the UK, but here for sure.
Highly recommend to anyone, especially vegetarians who want to experience Scottish cuisine!

The food and service was amazing! Andrew, our server, was very accommodating. Everything we ate was delicious. A bonus, they had Thistly Cross on draft! It certainly isn't cheap but definitely worth it.
If you're struggling with booking a table online and don't want to risk being a walk- in, try giving them a ring. We were a walk-in and were seated without any issues.
