Reviews of Monteiths

We reserved a time for a late dinner on a Sunday night and it turned out great. The staff was great and offered good dinner selections. Food was excellent. Had the smoked duck and crispy bite for starters. With the honey old fashioned. We had the braised ox cheek and white fish for main course.
R. L.
Had an exceptionally good dinner here. The food was amazing and the woman who served me was so lovely (I didn't catch your name sorry, but I'm the one that chatted your ear off about New Zealand!) not only did she tolerate my chatter because I was on my own, she was also manning the bar and restaurant on her own and doing an amazing job please give her a raise.
The food and wine was superb!
Wish I had time to go back!

Amazing food at this restaurant! It was beautifully presented and fresh. Slight downfall was the service. The staff weren’t as knowledgeable as expected for this type/level of restaurant. They brought the set menu but we had to request the a la carte menu afterwards. They thought it was easier if we ordered from the £45 3-course menu. However, we wanted more choice. We ordered both red and white wine and the waiter said there was only one bottle of red left. But they subsequently brought another of the same bottle. When the bill came, we asked for the service charge (10%) to be taken off but the waiter said it was policy to be added. However when he checked, it was found to be discretionary. In the end we paid half the service charge as we felt that the service could have been better. Couldn’t fault the food though! Credit to the kitchen team!

Love this place! Some of the best cocktails I've had and I've had a lot lol. The heather honey cocktail was beautiful and the apple bramble was a firm favourite. We will definitely be back for food soon as it looked amazing as it was coming out!
T. M.
Great little fine just off the royal, would say is worth visiting if you’re visiting Edinburgh! Although expensive for the amount, the quality of this little eclectic place is great. Service was good quality, albeit slow, the quality of the food won’t disappoint :)
C. K.
Delicious food, a bit pricey but worth it as a treat. I had the yummiest cocktail I've ever had - the Skittles Swizzle, and we shared the chocolate mousse (which would've been too big for one).
Also, the loveliest staff who had great energy and attentiveness.
K.
A beautiful meal with lovely service. The decor of the restaurant was great, felt cosy while remaining sleek.
The food was fantastic, the pressed pork belly, ham hough bon bon and fried sprouts with bacon all incredibley delicious. The cocktails on offer all sounded great and the heather honey old fashioned was a delight.
Highly recommended for an evening meal.
d. h.
The evening was fantastic start to finish. We had the brie and haggis to start, venison and halibut for main and cocktails to finish. All of it was perfect and the staff were welcoming, accommodating and friendly. Will definitely be coming back here next time we are in Edinburgh!

Lovely little date night restaurant. Delicious pork belly and steak. We enjoyed cocktails and wine under twinkly lights. We have been many times before and keep coming back.
D. J.
loved it.
really stylish, basement level bistro, with a cool vibe. the menu is small and the better for it.
we had roasted monkfish and it was perfect.
the staff are wonderful - friendly and attentive, without overkill.
great cocktails.
what's not to love?
B. S.
Fantastic place. Dimly lit basement, very cozy, beautiful art on the walls. We got sat right by the heater at first which was scorching hot but one word with the server and it was off. Had a few of their cocktails which were all wonderful, and I had the monkfish. It was fantastic. It is spendy but well worth it.
M. R.
Came here a couple years ago and had the best cocktails, the Bee's knees. Went back recently and they weren't as good unfortunately. Still very nice place, friendly staff and good atmosphere.
M. B.
We had a great time for our anniversary dinner at Monteith's. The location made it feel like we'd discovered a hidden gem! Food and cocktails were delicious and the service was prompt, friendly and welcoming. Thank you for making our night special!
B. M.
Unfortunately on this occasion when we arrived we were told that our table in the bar area had been let go as we were late (by 3 mins), even though I had called to let them know we would be late and told that was fine. Another table in the restaurant was sourced which was fine but after waiting 20 mins I eventually went to the bar to ask if our order could be taken. Never been so ignored in a bar in my life. Once drinks arrived they were great and staff became very attentive. The outside seating area is lovely. This is a cosy wee gem hidden off the Royal Mile so worth a visit.
T. M.
Really sweet restaurant! Cocktails are amazing!

Wonderful food, drink, and service.
S. L.
Good food. Nice cozy atmosphere.
M. D.
We happened upon Monteiths looking for a good place to eat near old town and made a reservation. Honestly, don't know how this place wasn't booked solid. One of the best meals that we've had. Ever. The food is amazing, the service is outstanding. Great locally sourced food in a wonderful atmosphere.
M. S.
Food and cocktails were amazing. Service was quite slow but it was very busy and didn't put a damper on the evening.
M. H.
Great service, very well-mixed cocktails and delicious food. It is a tad on the pricier side, especially for the portion size, but I would still recommend it very very highly
D. K.
This cute place on high street has my heart! Very friendly and super efficient and loving staff... they got all our orders right and they also suggested a lot of things. The place is not very big it’s small and cute. The entrance to this place is lovey. They have really good collection of liquor and I loved the Dalmore cigar!!!! Smooth!!! Food was yummmmm!! Yess mushroom risotto is something to have and it’s the best I have had till date and I remember the taste soooo well even if it’s been more than a month!! Love this place and table reservations is recommended
M. J.
Good selection of food and wines. Slightly steep prices for what you get but it is the royal mile so it kind of goes with the territory.
J. W.
My boyfriend and I had the best time here! Tucked away on busy High Street, you almost feel like you're in the wrong place as you duck under sticks and branches through an alleyway to find the entrance. Once inside, we were delighted to see a cozy, dim-lit restaurant with hipster, lodge-type decor. The food was absolutely amazing. We had a risotto and oyster dish to start. My boyfriend ordered venison for his main and I pork belly. We ended with a cheese board and creme brulee. Highly recommend the cheese board - it was the best I've ever had! The service and atmosphere were perfect for an intimate evening without being too formal or stuffy. Make sure to book a table beforehand!
J. L.
The atmosphere is cosy, the food was really good - we ordered 2 different risottos, cured salmon, heritage tomatoes with burrata. It was tasty and fresh. The location in the city centre is great and not busy (went there for lunch) which is nice ! Will be back to try the cocktails ;) !
T. G.
Atmosphere is ok but a bit pricey.
I had the braised pork and the skin was tough. My wife enjoyed her lobster and my son enjoyed his steak. Would I come back.. likely yes but it would not be my first choice but
R. W.
The food here is always excellent although the staff were a little short handed and therefore service wasn't as good as it had been previously. We had the haggis bon bons to start and then steak - both tasty and good portions. Also want to say we loved the music they played in the background! It wasn't loud but it was a great selection!
K. S.
High quality food although portion sizes were small so required three courses for dinner.
Didn’t like some of the flavours. Wasn’t too keen on the sauce with my haggis starter and the small onion things with the venison main (although this probably down to personal preference).
I must admit the mille feuille dessert wasn’t what i was expecting. It wasn’t like the cake version you get in a patisserie.
The service we received was quick and friendly. The restaurant is set just off the Royal Mile. Has a cosy feel to it although i did find it loud at times.
B.
Beautiful little spot. The food is “Michelin” style so portions not massive (however the Mrs thought they were perfectly sized!) but I have to say it was Delicious!! Well worth a visit
N. P. B.
My Mrs and I had a fantastic Sunday lunch here whilst we were in Edinburgh on holiday. Beautiful food made from fantastic ingredients. Friendly, attentive staff and a nice quiet atmosphere. Highly recommended.
R. K.
The food was amazing. Great experience for first timers in Scotland. Staff was very well versed in Whisky and offered pairings that matched well with the dishes.
M. B.
Very beautiful place.
I've loved the atmosphere from the entrance.
Mysterious, romantic and cosy.
I had very good cocktails and tried some snacks and I've been impressed by how good they were too, I never expected that crispy kale can taste so good.
I didn't have dinner but I had a look at the menù which was very interesting, short but of quality, exactly what I like.
Stuff was nice and friendly too.
I definitely recommand to check out this place.
A. B.
The food was pretty average, definitely overpriced. I wouldn’t go here for a culinary experience. The reason I’m giving it 4 stars and not less is that the service was really professional and friendly, and the atmosphere was pleasant.
S. B.
What a find! Cozy, unpretentious with amazing food. Open fairly late. Half way up the Royal Mile. Great service. Wish we lived closer!
A. W.
The food was absolutely beautiful! Catered to my awkward dietaries with no fuss, waiters were super friendly, and portion sizes were ample! The setting inside was cozy and very well presented. A great step away from the hustle & bustle!
K. E.
We booked this at short notice having just arrived in Edinburgh, an excellent choice. Food was top quality with service to match.
a. m.
Excellent food, the service was very good. Recomend the Haggins and the lamb. To return
R. B.
Stopped in for a cocktail, was certainly not disappointed! Staff are amazing.
J. v. z.
Food was absolutely delicious. Very fine dining in a relaxed environment. Really 5* quality food in such an inviting environment. I really enjoyed this place. The cocktails we had were exceptional. So tasty and complex. This is a wonderful place to impress people with. Service was outstanding we were served by an Australian legend that had such an amazing menu knowledge. Thanks guys!
A. M.
This place is so tasty. I highly recommend. Service is great also.
E. M.
Go for the atmosphere but stay for the food and drinks! They serve some great cocktails and tasty seafood. It was right off the Royal Mile, but didn't feel too touristy. Highly recommend.
D. S.
Had the most excellent craft cocktails and amazing food here. Pork, chicken, and lobster were all delicious. Staff was so very friendly, provided great recommendations, and wonderful service. If we lived locally, this would be our go to spot.
x. m.
Very nice place , cozi , the atmosphere and see decoration it's amazing. The food very tasty. I strongly recommend it .

Ideal location just under 10 mins walk from Waverly station, perfectly cooked west coast mussels in a wine, cream, shallot & garlic with homemade fresh bread n butter, Ribeye steak with homemade fat chips done in duck fat delicious followed by coffee n fudge oh and 2 lovely glasses of red wine fantastic meal friendly service in a lovely cosy wee restaurant , a definite must try and booking recommended , back today March 4th 2017 for another visit fantastic meal again, chips were amazing, steak was tasty but half the thickness it was on the previous visit, love the rustic bread and butter ;-)
R.
Best place so far in Edinburg. Amazing food but you must have order all courses including desert 😀
C. H.
Our first haggis and whiskey in Scotland! Well worth it... Amazing food and friendly service.
F. S.
It's a great restaurant. The food is delicious. The staff is pretty. Cocktail menu is wonderfull.
We have spent a good moment in family. Here we go...
J. M.
Really really good cocktails and food. It is quite pricy but worth it for a fancier meal!
J. M.
An incredible dining experience. The food, wine, staff and atmosphere made this a birthday treat to remember.
Y. M.
Our anniversary meal was lovely. It was tasty and we'll presented. The staff were friendly and attentive.
A. K.
Nice place with good food, friendly staff and great atmosphere. The place is a bit pricey and maybe the portions are not that big, but still it is a great choice if you want to try a new restaurant.
C. B.
Delicious food and drinks with very friendly staff. Gorgeous decor and lovely location. Definitely worth a visit.
G. T.
A nice place for dinner. Good selection of food, drinks, and dessert. Cozy environment. Good spot for 2-4 people.
J. B. J.
Nice. Staff super friendly. But lots of items missing from the menu which is a problem when there is not much choice. But give it a go it's small and intimate and perfect for a winter's night.
A. G. (. घ.
Lovely food and cocktails. The Heather Honey Old Fashioned is divine, and definitely try the Potato dumplings. Ditto for the Fried Goat's Cheese.
N. T.
Very cosy bar, never had food, but the cocktails were excellent and reasonably priced by Edinburgh standards.
M. C.
We dined at Monteiths last night and left disappointed with my main course. The evening began well with the starters and cocktails. I went for a negroni and my friend had a burnt pineapple martini. Both were mixed to perfection.
For starters we ordered the haggis bon bons and the goats cheese. The haggis and chutney were outstanding and my friend enjoyed her goats cheese dish however there was a wait for it to arrive as the waitress did not order it.
For the main dishes we had a long wait then when they arrived the lamb and seabass were presented well however both of us notes how cold both dishes were. The mash potato side was inedible for me. It tasted like the hollandaise sauce had split and there was a strong, unpleasant taste of vinegar, I sent it back. The broccoli was also cold. The sauce topping had a skin on top as that had arrived cold too.
Was very much looking forward to our dining experience at Monteiths but the evening did not live up to expectations.
Also, please change the blinking/ flicking lightbulb, it's very distracting and hurts your eyes after a while!
R. S.
A great place to spend the night with friends and some cocktails. The team is friendly and helpful. The barkeeper knows his job.
S. J.
Had a most enjoyable meal with friends. We had succulent steaks with yummy chips. Finished our meal with superb cocktails. Friendly staff with a pleasant ambience. Spotlessly clean with all the safety measures in place.
E. M. G.
Very good, a go-to place for great food. Get a reservation mind you!
C. Z.
A very good place for a good Breakfast 😋👍. The staff is very friendly and courteous!!😎
D. D.
A basement restaurant and bar with some upbeat service and relaxed ambience. The cocktails and drinks are quite nice and the service is absolutely wonderful. The food is nice but could have been a little better with flavors and size for the price. The place is well decorated and has something for everyone. Its located on the royal mile just next to the bus stop and a taxi stand.
K. S.
Great food and drinks! Would recommend the Haggis starter. Lovely old fashioned as well. Lots of good quality cocktails to chose from.
B. X.
The staff were really nice and friendly and the ambience was fantastic!
K. A.
Cosy place, interesting deco, amazing food although a bit on the small side.
A. L.
Service was fine with considering how busy the place was. Food was quite good, but a tad overpriced for the portions. Quality was great though!
R. H.
Busy place with good apps and cocktails. The bacon and butterscotch is really good. Great atmosphere and vibe
J. H.
Really enjoyed our visit this evening on what turned out to be reopening day. Our starters of venison Scotch eggs and haggis, mains of halibut, lamb and pork, finished with chocolate tart and cheeseboard, with drinks including cocktails and desert wine were all absolutely delicious. Very friendly staff, a lovely end to our day in Edinburgh.
I. M.
Food was excellent and service was the same, great evening for the whole group!
B. T.
We tried haggis here and it was amazing

Monteiths is an absolute hidden gem of edinburgh. It was my girlfriends birthday and on arrival they provided us with with complimentary cocktails which was a lovely gesture. After this we had a couple of cocktails and a few small plates - all of which were delicious. I would highly recommend monteiths to anyone visiting edinburgh as it was by far the best place we visited.
D. E.
Really good food, service and atmosphere. 😍
B. V.
Limited food menu but everything delicious, from the risottos to the fish and chips, great drinks menu. I highly recommend the hot buttered brew on a cold day. Wow.
Our server was very personable and friendly. This was a random open table finding an be we loved every bit of it.
D. R.
Beautiful food and wine

What a wonderful experience! The staff are welcoming and personable, we spent an hour just socializing. They made us feel like old friends! That's not to mention the delicious food, the exciting drinks, and the atmosphere-from the Secret Garden inspired entrance off of the Royal Mile, to the feeling of adventure that comes from descending the stairs into the restaurant entrance-this place has it all. It is highly recommend and was the perfect way to cap off our Edinburgh adventure! Thank you for the magical evening!
A.
Went here for a birthday dinner. The place is cozy, serves great cocktails, and has delicious food! Highly recommend the seafood chowder and fillet! The espresso martini is also great. Service was good, and all staff were friendly and helpful.
S.
Wonderful service, great food you must try the Haggis Bon Bons and Cocktails
k. h.
We stopped by for a late afternoon snack. This ended up being by far the best meal we had in Edinburgh! From the onion soup to beef sandwich and of course fish and chips, everything was top notch quality. Great service as well! I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting the Royal Mile and who appreciates great food amongst the tourist traps.
A. C.
This was the last place we ate in Edinburgh and it was fantastic! Hubby ordered the bacon and caramel sauce (Yeah! I mean, where else can you get bacon served with caramel sauce for dipping??) We had other small bites and drinks and soaked up the ambience here. Overall, a great restaurant with a very romantic setting, perfect for couples. The food is very good and the service is wonderful.
B. M.
A great find, the atmosphere was great and the clientele selection varied. The food was honestly fabulous and well worth the money, the cocktail and wine selections were large and the cocktails we tried were definitely new to us. Would absolutely visit again.
P. R.
Small place. Our anniversary dinner. Place was full on Tues night. Tables too close together. One room with no partitions so very noisy and nothing on walls to muffle sound. Had my chair kicked 3 times during dinner by waiter and patrons squeezing by. Mussels were great. Ribeye was cooked perfectly but not great quality and lacking in flavor. I’m sure I would enjoy it more during off season.
C.
The food was delicious, and service was super fast. Great atmosphere- cozy and fun, very friendly. They have a fantastic selection of beer, wines, whisky, and more. Would definitely recommend checking out. Make sure to book first, space is at a premium.
G. B.
We stumbled across this little gem on the way to the train station so had limited time and so went for a couple of cocktails with the bar snack menu. The cocktails were beautiful, one of the rare places which now offer genuine cocktails. We also went for the haggis bonbons which made us a bit resentful for the fact that we didn't have time to pick from the main menu! They were so good. Lovely environment and welcoming staff, definitely going to revisit in the new year.
J. C.
Lovely staff, resto is really nice decorated and the food was delicious. Halibut was great and venison too! 😋
C. F.
Superb!
Good service, great atmosphere, fantastic food...makes a memorable evening.
Thank you team Monteiths!
D. D.
Brilliant food. Lovely ambience and a great evening was had by all.
T. P.
Excellent cocktails - perhaps some of the best I've had whether in NYC, SF, London etc. I told the bar tender what I liked and he mixed several unique drinks I'd never had before. Food was good though not excellent. Space was a bit small and crowded and music was jarringly loud. All said I wouldn't hesitate to come again.
A. F. G.
Quiet, modern well crafted dishes and a good atmosphere.
B. L.
Very good restaurant in a basement- very Edinburgh - on the Royal Mile. Often pretty busy so booking at busy times probably best. Small cocktail bar if you just fancy a drink. Nice modern setting with some understated tartan just in case. Steaks were great as were the triple cooked chips
L. S.
Found this place because we saw the cool flower archway (you have the duck to get in!). Came for a few cocktails, and the place was really nice with good decor and friendly staff. There was even a small outdoor courtyard. Cocktail menu had some unique choices and all of the ones we tried were very tasty (I recommend the orchard bramble and the london calling #2!)
S. W.
We went to Monteith's after a nice loooooooong hike at Arthur's Seat. It was absolutely delicious. We literally ordered everything from the bread plate (amazing herbed butter that came with it) to the duck (highly rec.) to the fish (good, but the duck dish was better) to the pudding dessert (unlike anything I have had but really loved it). I highly recommend eating here. Really had a nice, relaxing vibe to it. The staff was incredibly nice, taking our huge coats and being very attentive and friendly.
D. E.
A hidden gem. This restaurant / pub is right off the Royal Mile. Featuring an entryway that is covered in arched sticks, you feel like you are entering some place really special. While the menu looked interesting and unique else opted for just drinks at the bar. The decided on bar tenders choice and were thrilled with his ability to anticipate our flavor profile. Each cocktail was the perfect balance of spirits, flavors and spices. Definitely recommend to anyone seeking a high end yet casual time.
T. M.
What a quality bar, never too busy which is hard to find with good places.
S. C.
A lovely hidden away find. It's very warm and cosy inside with a real mismatch of furniture that just works. The food portions are reasonable but full of flavor and at a price that's not steep. I had the haggis which was some of the best I've had (not that I'm an expert) and I couldn't stop eating the duck fat chips.
Suitable for dates and families alike.
R. B.
A lovely little hidden place away from the hustle and bustle of the high street. The bar staff are very friendly and happy to say prepared probably the best Old Fashioned cocktail I've had so far in Scotland. Nice little outside area with heating
J. K.
It has a well hidden entrance to a cellar restaurant and it does feel like you have left the busy Royal Mile behind. Atmosphere is warm and decor in keeping with it. Food and drink great with Scottish produce to the fore. Enjoyed our steak and chips. Would go back again.
M. C.
Brilliant little restaurant. A little later getting to our table than we'd booked for but completely worth the wait. Food was great, cocktails were expertly made and the service was friendly throughout. Will definitely book again if back in Edinburgh.
a. m.
Excellent Christmas lunch menu. Good amount to eat and lovely flavour, turkey meat a little tough for my taste and another pig on its blanket would have been appreciated. The cheese board is worth a visit. Really nice wine.
J. V. K.
Loved the food and setting. The risotto was well seasoned and prepared as was the scallops. We felt like it was the best chateaubriand in town. Beautiful coloring, little or no fat and perfectly cooked. All nice portions. I liked how there were a smattering if different chairs at each table. If you want hygge in Edinburgh, this is the place to go!
j. S.
Our bartender was impeccable with his service. My partner and I came in late and had 4 cocktails. He was patient with us when we were deciding, made sure our drinks came out together and topped up our glasses of water regularly. We enjoyed watching him make cocktails behind the bar with calm and meticulous precision. We are coming back tomorrow for lunch.
K. C.
If you like listening to ABBA while eating (delicious) lobster this is the place! The staff were incredibly well meaning and friendly and the food was delicious but it lacked an atmosphere I know this place could have. All in all I felt as though I was in a tourist trap when I think they have the ability to make it feel better than that. Maybe it’s the music. The cocktails were fantastic and the haggis Bon bons. The lobster felt very small and the ‘chips’ did not feel worthy as a side. Also cut my finger on the door to the toilet stall so watch that I suppose. All in all, I would rather have not spent my money here.
A. T.
The meal was lovely enjoyed it. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Will go back on my nxt visit to Edinburgh.
P. A.
Oh it was great, we got the last free table after a great evening with the Scottish national ballet, we were made most welcome and given our late arrival the staff were friendly and accommodating. The large party of friendly chineese tourists sang Happy birthday in chorus upon discovering my companion was celebrating her '100th birthday!'
R. M.
Excellent food and cocktails and very welcoming staff, but a combination of very salty food and being asked four or five times whether we wanted more drinks made us feel quite pressured. We ended up forgoing the digestif for this reason, even though we'd been looking forward to sampling something from their wide selection of spirits.
I. M.
First visit and disappointing.
Starters of salmon and Arbroath smokie risotto Ok but not outstanding.
Mains of duck and venison very dry and unappetizing. No sauces provided meaning meat was boring to eat and we struggled to finish. Eating in silence as both of us disappointed with meal. Side of fries very dry and old and worse than a fast food chain. Waitress although nice had limited English and couldn't explain menu. Didn't understand the word "sides" so we struggled to order. Cost was twice our previous meal in Howies which was much better. Will not return. Pity.
C. R.
Good food but a little pricey for what you get, cosy atmosphere though
C. B.
The dishes are great and creative, the staff is more than lovely! The atmosphere is outrageous
E. T.
Scottish dining and drinks at their best. A lovely, unusual and beautiful little place down a fairy light lit entrance. The food is delicious, and the cocktails inventive. The staff are always lovely too. I always take visitors here as I think it is a must see!

I think it may be unfair to review a Royal Mile restaurant in Festival time - not that Monteith's is by any means your normal tartan and stag's head tourist trap (though both those adornments are present). However it used to be my all time favourite restaurant. The food quality always excellent, great wine list and other drink selections, service always first class and wonderful location. So why was I slightly less than overwhelmed on this occasion? Well, food still excellent, though maybe slightly more prissy than it used to be, definitely smaller portions and the menu more limited than I remember. We also felt hurried, it was extremely busy and noisy and I felt the pricing to be hugely increased from what it was previously. These last complaints may be a direct result of the pre-show hour on a Friday night at Festivaltime and to be fair we went again last night (Sunday) and it was much quieter, our meal more leisured and the service more relaxed. So maybe it is unfair to judge the place from that. I wonder too if the price hike is permanent. Anyway if you can afford it and either don't mind the freneticism or find a quieter time, it remains hard to beat in the old town.
S. Y.
This hidden gem of the Royal Mile, tucked away down a fairy-light lit alley, did not disappoint.
The staff went beyond when our table number increased at the last minute and were very apologetic on our table position due to it's proximity to a Christmas party.
The decor is very cosy where tables are quite close together, however it suits the venue though do book to make sure you do get a table. The food was amazing however some dishes were surprisingly smaller than other dishes within the same course so quantity may vary.
D. L.
Boss atmosphere. Great food. Best bottle of Rosé I've had. Ever.
T. W.
Didn't eat here so this review is drinks and atmosphere only. Prices are fair, drinks are very varied (if you're into IPAs or Japanese whiskey this'll be right up your street).
Being honest I kinda wanted to hate this place cause it seemed kinda try-hard trendy... but I just couldn't. Bar staff are lovely, music is spot on and the wee seating area out in the alley was exactly what we wanted on a hot humid evening.
Brilliant place, can't wait to pop back in again.
I.
I wish we had stopped in at Monteith's sooner than we did. The food was great and was on the table quickly. The bar menu, whisky and beer, was excellent. Next time we're in town, we'll be dining here more regularly.
I. H.
Great food and good service. Had some really tender lamb and lobster macaroni and cheese. Both were fantastic as were the sides: carrots (cooked to the exact doneness that carrots should be) and cucumber salad.
The entrance can be kind of hard to find, so use Street View before you go.

Lovely restaurant. Went there for a special occasion. Food was delicious, service was exceptional., an setting amazing All in all. Well worth the money. Certainly will be back again
C. P.
If you’re looking for an atmospheric dining experience, it doesn't get much better than a fairy-lit close just off of the Royal Mile. Throw great food and stylish surroundings into the mix and you have Monteiths, a lovely restaurant with a great menu, which definitely has something for everyone.
I highly recommend the steak if you’re a meat fan. It was cooked perfectly (medium-rare, as per my request) and the accompanying chips were good too. I was too full for dessert, but the menu was tempting. So much so, that I can’t wait to go back for some of their sweet treats.
Royal Mile eateries can often be geared solely at tourists, which at time can have an impact on the food. Monteiths definitely hasn't gone down that road, and for that I am very grateful.

Had Dinner here on the 14th December. Lovely waiter offered us the festive Christmas menu when he found out my friend celebrated Christmas on the 24th instead of 25th which was a nice touch. We didn't have drinks other than soft drinks. However we were amazed by the bartender making cocktails - was like an art. The food was to die for, lovely and very filling. Staff were pretty amazing. Would recommend to anyone and would defiantly come again.
Thank you for a nice meal and experience.
A. P. M.
Amazing food and experience, the place is very nice. A little bit noisy for our taste but the other things make it worth it.
R. P.
Excellent food with a cozy atmosphere. I had the lamb which was prepared very well. The cocktail was also excellent. Very good service. Quaint location.
R. N.
What a wonderful visit we had today for lunch! Lastnight we went to a below average Italian restaurant and ordered a chicken Ceasar salad. It was awful, so today I wanted to be redeemed. I ordered a chicken Caesar at Monteiths and it was amazing! Fresh homemade dressing, beautiful croutons and slices of anchovy and a perfectly poached egg set on top. It was amazing! The service exceeded our expectations and the bartender who looked after us was lovely. Highly reccomend!

A hidden gem on The High Street in Edinburgh.
You enter through a archway of branches (watch your head) into an outdoor courtyard with stairs leading down to the main bar and restaurant.
We were greeted by a friendly member of staff and asked if we wanted a drink at the bar before going to our table for dinner. (Nice touch).
The staff were very friendly and the service was efficient without being overbearing.
The food was excellent and well priced. My wife and I had bread and bacon to share as a starter and then we both had ribeye steak with proper chips.
We had never been before but we would go again and sample some more of the menu or just for a drink to escape the hussle and bussle of The High Street.
A. G.
I have only been here once for dinner but did enjoy it. The food was nice but its really the atmosphere and decor that makes this place special! I would go more often but due to the location its always busy. My boyfriend and friends all has steaks and said they were incredible!
E. L.
The restaurant was sooo lovely. We enjoyed the food a lot and the service was excellent. Our waiter Gergo was very friendly, making our stay even better. We would definitely recommend this restaurant especially if you are in for a short stay and want to have a great food experience. I would recommend you make a reservation for a secure place. :)
S. S.
A cute restaurant with an impressive entrance. Food quality matched the price, which ranged between £4-7 for a starter and £15-25 for a main course. Food quantity was slightly less than I would have expected. The ambience was nice but slightly more casual and patchy than I would have liked. The waitresses were quick but could have been more helpful and politer. Overall, a good experience, which could work for a smart casual night out or a date, even though I can easily think of a few nicer alternatives within the same category nearby, such as La Garrigue and Maison Bleue.
J. E.
My girlfriend took me here for my birthday and I was not disappointed. It feels very warm and welcoming, however maintains a classy feel. The food and whisky selection were fantastic too.
A. W.
Every aspect of my experience at Monteiths was excellent. As a huge seafood fan, I was delighted with the menu. My friend and I shared starters: squid with a chilli jam and scallops. The squid was perfectly cooked, not chewy at all, and the scallops were nice and big, which isn't often the case for a starter portion. For mains, I ordered hake with mash potatoes and a lobster broth - absolutely delicious.
Our waitress was incredibly attentive, but not in your face, and she made every effort to make our experience an excellent one. The décor is contemporary Scottish and the overall atmosphere was relaxed but with a good wee buzz. Price wise, for 6 people with a couple rounds of drinks, bottle of Moet, 2 courses and coffee = £308. Pretty decent for the quality of the food.
Definitely going here again, I have my eye on the seafood platter!
C. H.
Really nice setting having a "drawing room" feel. Great choice of cocktails made as requested by the more than adept bartenders. The Shackleton whisky has an interesting back story, but not worth the £15 price tag.
A. A.
Great atmosphere and amazing food. The prices are a higher than most places, but is worth every pound! I strongly reccomend the pork belly here, one of the best meals I've had.
G. A.
The haggis drew me in, but what a great bustling little place this is. This basement restaurant is quite cramped, but this probably adds to the atmosphere. The waiting staff are also great and really friendly and generally do a good job keeping so many tables and orders in their heads. The aforementioned haggis is a small affair, but it was full of flavour and restored my faith in this dish. It can be tasty! We also had the squid to start, but they graciously cooked it without the crackling owing to my sons dairy intolerance. A big thank you for that. It was still good quality, thick and firm. and I can only imagine what it would be like with the crackling. We also had the duck, lam, cod and venison. We were pre-warned that the meats would be served pink, which I believe it should be anyway. The quality of the meats was again excellent - no gristle at all and so soft to cut. I had my eyes opened to smoked vegetables - go on try it. The duck fat chips we could have had more of. Actually we did order more of them, but they didn't arrive along with the two lots of spinach. Hey ho the tenderstem broccoli they gave us instead was perfectly al dente so we didn't send it back. As I say, it was the August and this place was heaving. Next time we're in Edinburgh, we will book again.
A. B.
First visit to Edinburgh and was recommended here. So glad we came. Staff really friendly, cocktails very alcoholic and delicious food. Try the skittles cocktail. Would definitely recommend a visit.
T. W.
A really unique little place, hidden underground. We went for a quiet weekday lunch but I imagine this would be a cool place to go for an evening drink. Straightforward but well put together lunch menu, decent beer and friendly staff.
K. P.
A firm favourite Edinburgh restaurant, great for us late evening diners. The food is perfect, full of flavour and abience perfect for a romantic dinner for two. My husband and I enjoy Montheiths so much that it's a first choice for valentines, anniversaries, birthdays and sneaky romantic late night meals for two. Not forgetting the ever friendly, helpful and welcoming staff.
A. H.
Great hidden gem, grazed on several starters and bottles of rose with the Mrs, recommended by a local property agent who always goes here. Entrance looks awesome, decor tasteful, but careful not to walk past as it's hidden in a narrow alleyway. Will go again on next visit
G. B.
Over the years this has become a regular nightcap stop off. They have a good selection of wine which comes in decanters. They also have some unusual gins and spirits.
The staff are really friendly and the outdoor seating area with sparkly lights is lovely in the summer.
c. r.
Wow, the food was stunning! And the service was just as good!
C. P.
Very nice food, I enjoyed it very much!
M. H.
Terrific staff - Sarah served us and she was great - served a very good Old Fashioned and great quality food. Height of the Festival so rather irritating crowd but that's not Monteith's fault. Recommended.
C. P.
Great food, great service.
Awesome food - the Arbroath Smokie Risotto was to die for. The haggis, neeps and tatties was cutely presented and tasted amazing.
Great service. Allowed us to visit with our dog, we sat in the outside area. They even brought a bowl of water.
T. D.
A great little restaurant. Fabulous cocktails and delicious food - the haggis and pork belly were standout Good service and friendly staff.will definitely return.
S. M.
This is a lovely bar and restaurant tucked away off the High Street, Royal Mile. The decor is a stylish twist on traditional Scottish and has a a well-stocked bar.
I'm yet to eat here despite a great looking menu and reputation.
There is a heated outdoors area under a canopied tunnel of willow and fairy lights which is great for a cosy drink with friends or a romantic night out. Drinks are reasonably priced and there is an interesting selection of whiskies.
M. P.
An Edinburgh institution and rightly so. It's well designed from the arched entrance sprinkled with fairy lights to the cool, hidden bunker interior. The delivery isn't bad either - succinct but exciting cocktail menu and some good Scottish fare which sits on the right side of traditional with a modern edge.
E. J.
Cozy little Restaurant with a changing and really fresh Menu.
Wander down the Montheits close and find yourself in another world.
The Servers are so nice and really sweet and treat everyone the same, if you're a local or a tourist.
A must if you like good local food made freshly everday and if you enjoy some quiet of the noisy and crowdy royal mile
V.
Second visit to this very welcoming bar / restaurant...did not disappoint. Great cocktails, lovely food - wonderful ambience. Highly recommend if you are visiting Edinburgh!
D. P.
Outstanding location with a great variety of Scottish dishes with a modern twist. Cheesecake homemade was superb. And as a starter seafood chowder was absolutely marvelous
P. S.
Cosy and friendly. Amazing food. Recommend the carpaccio of beef!
P. C.
Food of the highest quality, wonderful service, a sanctuary of relaxed good taste hidden amidst the madness and tourist tat and rip-offs of the Royal Mile - and along with everything else the most wonderful whisky. To be cherished.
A. M.
Love the intimacy of Monteiths. Didn't enjoy the poor quality steak from the Groupon deal but haggis bon bons and duck fat chips are amazing. Staff very attentive but sometimes over the top!
S. K.
So worth the visit. Amazing food! The ARBROATH SMOKIE RISOTTO and the DRESSED CRAB was pure heaven and the VENISON LOIN was to die for. I would recomend this restaurant if you want a faboluous evening in an cozy environment.
M. v.
it might be a little bit up market and you might find that you will need a certain special occasion or excuse to make your way to Monteiths but dont get fooled: this is one of the best cocktail places in town. their menu is certainly enticing. the mixologists are very knowledgeable an will be ready to suggest you something if you are not sure what to choose from. the restaurant part is also worth the visit. cosy, welcoming surroundings and amazing food. walking down the stairs after passing by a fairy lights corridor certainly anticipates the good things you are about to experience there!
R. L.
Great food and atmosphere staff were friendly and attentive. It's not a cheap eat but well worth the cost. If I'm ever back I'll go again and reccommend to anyone that is in the area.
S. R.
Really nice place to go on a date. The food is not in giant portions but the standard was very high. The fillet steak was delicious. Nice atmosphere and attentive staff.
L. C.
Great customer service and hands down the best steak in Edinburgh
K. S.
Oh my gosh I love this place so much. I first discovered Monteiths when a friend invited me there for girly drinks. From the minute I spied the, no other word for it, MAGICAL entrance, I was hooked. If you're going on a date, GO HERE, GO HERE. He/She will love it and think you are the most romantic person ever, dreamily looking into your eyes planning what your babies will look like. No, of course, I didn't do that! As if.
The wines and cocktail are oh so fine, and the food always tastes fab. I've lunched and evening dined here so take it on good authority, Monteiths is pretty special!!
M. C. (.
We visited Monteith's with an itison voucher and weren't expecting much from our sirloin steak and duck fat chips. The entrance to the restaurant is through a close decorated with fairy lights which gave your entrance an enchanted historic feel of Edinburgh and the restaurant/bar has been decorated in the same theme. Its walls are decorated with deer antlers and other hunting style memorabilia as well as leather bound books, keeping to a Victorian style hunting mansion type theme.
When we were seated and looked at the menu, we decided to go with the smoked mushroom side dish to go with our sirloin steak. One thing I noticed when asking for steak in various restaurants is it's difficult for the chefs to get a steak cooked medium rare; it relies heavily on the chef knowing the stove well to cook your steak at the right heat and for the right amount of time. Monteith's made a perfect, melt in your mouth steak and the duck fat chips (although it seemed like you only got 6 chips) were thick Jenga blocks. The smoky flavour of the mushrooms was a new flavour to experience with button mushrooms that I enjoyed quite a lot.We were also given a glass of house wine to go with our meal and while I'm not much of a wine drinker, the small amount I drank was very nice indeed.
I would definitely recommend Monteith's to anyone who's looking for a fine dining experience.
A. C.
What a great evening we had ! Food was delicious staff were wonderland friendly and very accommodating :) worth every penny atmosphere was great and Sophia was happy to stop and talk xx thank you very very much xx Ally and Mark xxxx
S. O.
Very good tasty food. Cozy atmosphere. Excellent location but nice hidden hideaway off The Royal Mile. Would definitely recommend
J. D.
Fabulous! We had an itison deal for Christmas lunch and they were so accommodating to my annoying vegan requirements! Above and beyond the call of duty. I have been a few times before and the food and service is always excellent. Not cheap, but not expensive considering how lovely the place is and the location.
s. d.
Good service, but put Tennetts lager on the bar gone down in class
G. T.
I still dream about the bacon and butterscotch sauce. I had it for starter and dessert. The rib eye steak is a marvel and the bees nees cocktail is the most delicious thing this side of heaven.
D. P.
Great food, great atmosphere. Friendly staff. Went for a date with the girlfriend and would recommend it. Not cheap, but worth the price!
A. D.
Lovely staff and atmosphere. Food was very good, every dish was well thought out. Highly recommend.
F. A.
Excellent food and atmosphere. The staff were friendly but the place was a little overcrowded where they had tried to squeeze in a few too many tables so the service was slow.
M. P.
Haven't been to Monteiths in far too long, but it remains one of my very favourite eating and drinking spots in Edinburgh. In a brilliant location just off the Royal Mile, Monteiths can be found at the bottom of a twinkly-lit side-street that will light up the eyes of your date - as long as they haven't been before, of course! Inside you're greeted by modern faux-hunting lodge décor and mismatched furniture that either adds to the charm or looks a little messy, depending on your point of view. However, something that can't be argued about is the quality of the food and drinks. There's a reason why Monteiths has won awards - the steaks in particular rival anything else you'll find in the vicinity, and the bar staff mix cocktails alongside the very best in Edinburgh. For goodness' sake, go to Monteiths. Also keep an eye on popular voucher websites, as you very occasionally will see a deal for steak and wine. If you do, buy it immediately - you won't be disappointed.
J. T.
Cosy place nice cocktails. Was cold but we were near the door!
J. R.
Great place. Only had a few cocktails really. But they were bloody amazing. Take the wife, take your date. You will be onto a winner.
b. w.
Food was lush , service lovely, just remembered tell them how you want your food cooked
R. E.
Mildly over priced (all about location i guess), however, all that considered the staff are amazing and the food is pretty tasty. Would we go back; yes; but only for a special occasion ..
H. W.
Amazing restaurant, nice vibe, good food and desserts
M. O.
Really nice cocktail bar and sublime restaurant. Great food and service. Be sure you book in advance cause otherwise you might get disappointed.
R. H.

C. K.
So delicious. I'm stuffed!
P. O.
This place is just a total gem, from the manager downwards. The servicing staff are friendly, the bar staff both knowledgeable and approachable and the food perfectly suits the atmosphere and ambience of the place.
m. c.
Lovely cocktail bar
V. A. C.
Great place. It has a small list for food but it's pretty delicious... If you want something gourmet to try and you are around in Old Town, you have to try..
S. H.
Super friendly servers, great cocktail selection, and cozy environment! Only surprise I had was that the steak was a bit more rare for 'medium' than I was expecting.
K. S.
Limited menu choices, but lovely food and nice atmosphere
J. F.
Very cosy restaurant but over priced for not much food. Left hungry. Don't think I will be back. Staff lovely though.couldnt fault them.

K. D.
Great food but service was a little slow...
N. J.
Excellent food, atmosphere and wine. The playlist of 90s classics was a bit weird but got better after a couple of cocktails and a bottle of wine
S. V. (.
Good choice of whiskey and cocktails. Nice surroundings and friendly staff
O. K.
Great Bloody Mary. Place is hidden away down a close and down a few stairs. The place to go if it's raining, and there is lounge seating for cocktails.
S. S.
Very nice lunch small and friendly staff .thought a little expensive but in high street so normal I would think for this part of town .will go there again in the near future.
m. l.
Meals were well cooked and enjoyed. Experience let down by unfriendly servers and also sense of feeling that menu was slightly overpriced.
E. A.
Excellent food, very friendly manager and staff and great atmosphere. I dared to try haggis for the first time and it was great!
S. L. P.

Great food but service could improve massively.
I have been visiting this restaurant for a few years now as I live near by but the service unfortunately never improves.

R. P.
The food is levels and the service is top notch too, thank you!
L. S.
We were there with an Itison voucher, lovely meal but feel we may have received friendlier service had we been paying normal prices.
M. A.
Excellent food and service. All the steaks served to our group sublime. Best napkins I've ever seen.

Very nice place but mediocre food that doesn't justify the price. Great cocktails though
J. N.
Delightful cocktails and very cosy. Quite small but very popular, book in advance to avoid disappointment.
C. L.
Good food that is worth the money... But the service... Well... They are not the fastest or most serviceminded. Could easaly have been five stars.
M. M.
Good food. Friendly staff. You need a reservation as it is really busy on a weekend night.
C. R.
Really good food, a little pricey, but worth it. Just make sure to reserve a table at least a few hours in advance

J. Z.
Always the finest service and menu. Great range of drinks and perfectly executed steaks.
C. M.
On the plus side, excellent food, lovely staff and good value, but the service was slow, no criticism of the staff, rather an over-optimistic diner/staff ratio.
D. L.
Emily and the crew deliver great food in a friendly atmosphere, great cocktails in a hidden Royal Mile hide away, cosy subterainian restaurant!
M.
Food was simple but of excellent quality.

(Translated) The place is not easy to find, but worth the detour.
The place is nice, the welcome is cordial and the food a joy.
From aperitif to dessert, no false note, and there were 6 of us.
Unanimously we appreciated.

(Translated) Rather disappointed with this dinner which I found very expensive for what we ate.
Cocktails & starter without much interest.
The fish dish was delicious.
On the other hand, of the 3 à la carte meat dishes, 2 are not available. The waitress then offers me a steak whose flavor she praises to me ... but not the price! When the bill comes in the dish is £ 33 while the dishes he was supposed to replace was more like £ 24.
Unpleasant feeling of being ripped off.

(Translated) The food was very very good with sought after flavors! The desserts were the best I have eaten. The staff were very pleasant and the setting is very neat and modern. On the other hand, the service was very long (45 min to be served), the wine came almost at the end of the meal. The room was very dark, so you need good eyes to read the map. The plates are very small and the prices are quite expensive. Besides, you have to pay for support.

(Translated) Ideally located in the old town this restaurant / bar has an ambient and very nice decor! Interesting wine list but .. dear! The main courses were very tasty with a very elegant presentation! pig with a very good beet puree. The duck was very good too. The accompaniments are paid for separately .. I do not think that is justified. We had taken the gratin of potatoes .. not extraordinary. For dessert we avos took 3 Scottish cheeses: for 9 pounds I can say that I was disappointed by the 3 small mini slices .. I did not love the cheese .. but it's personal. For the thousand red-berry leaves, big disappointment .. the dough was replaced by caramelized sugar .. not too fan. The big flat: a crazy waiting time! 1h between our arrival and the first service ... when the dessert arrived I slept almost already on the table 😂😂 but, for what is essential: the balance is positive.

(Translated) Nice surprise because this restaurant is not visible from the street and yet it is worth seeing. Excellent salmon and very good risotto with peas. Reasonable price and efficient service. I recommend

(Translated) We loved it, we have to find the place, at the end of a dead end. The meals are excellent, fine food, the prices are higher than a brewery but it is definitely worth spending an evening there.

On a adoré, il faut trouver l'endroit, au fond d'une impasse. Les repas sont excellents, fine cuisine, les prix sont plus élevés qu'une brasserie mais ça vaut vraiment la peine d'y passer une soirée .
