Reviews of Mother India's Cafe
A. T.
In a word, amazing. I visited this place for lunch and was delighted to experience the amazing food and the reasonable price tag it comes at. Just a word of caution, if you don't like hot and spicy you have to tell them to mellow down the hot quotient otherwise the default is very spicy! For an Indian spice lover this place is as good as it can get in Scotland. The place is great to have a meal with family. The Naans are amazing both in size and in taste. Overall a must visit place for a Desi food lover in Old Town Edinburgh.

I got a table despite not having booked prior and appreciated them for allowing me satisfy a random craving. Pricing was pretty decent too.
I also love unassuming restaurant setups, and this was one of them with a basement area which was a pleasant surprise.
But, I’ve tasted better and more authentic Indian food. They had their spin on the Butter Chicken but weren’t heavy on the spices as I’d have preferred.
Masala tea was also more tea than herbs and spices, and not even enough milk.
Waiters were friendly but across my table I watched 2 waiters talk over guests’ meals before they served at their table, and that grossed me out. Sounds a little dramatic considering this is likely to happen in many kitchens but the sight of it was unpleasant.
Never have I ever emptied a bowl of sauce in an Indian restaurant until this one - pretty small portion.
I’d go again for the ambience, not so much the food.

Tapas style works great for Indian food. Tried 5 out of the six dishes our group ordered. Chilli fish cakes and karahi mushrooms were my favourites. Very reasonably priced as well. First visit but will definitely be back.
C. N. V.
Very good Indian food at nice location. Options of lunch menu until 17h with first, main and dessert or coffee from 12 pounds. Nice staff! Recommended!
S. P.
The best Indian food i ever had in UK. Must try samosas n aloo chat at very reasonable prices 🎉
J. S.
Went here for first time! Been told about this place and read reviews! First thing I liked about this place was the honesty of our waiter, told us exactly how much we should get which was spot on!! Have chicken and fish pakora! Look at the size of portion amazing tasted brilliant then on to main, butter chicken beautiful and delicate flavours with juicy chicken and chicken tikka basil just banging! If you love basil this is the one! Popadoms and dips fresh! Whole experience was outstanding! Great place staff food!! Just go!!! Just been back OMG even better pics are chilli chicken and keema dossa just incredible!! Mains are chilli chicken and railways lamb curry!!! AMAZING!!!! This is why I love Indian food!!! Best around!!
P. O.
Good food. Not too spicy. Great service. Naans were soft and fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Pindi channa, aloo Gobi was good. Quantity of dishes could be better. Service was fast. Clean restrooms.
G. B.
The obvious narrative about the small portion tapas style of dish here overlooks the fact that these will be the best tasting dishes you've had. Tandoori monkfish and saag paneer were particularly exceptional
G. B.
Many Indian places really don’t know how to cook real Indian food . Finally a place that cooks food great ..without all that oil …great flavours and original dishes. Def would eat here again only down side was there was a draft that made me feel cold and uncomfortable .
V.
Edinburgh has a lot of Indian places to try but this one is a must try if you are craving some Indian food. The staff are kind and service is quick. The ambience and food was good too. The Chicken dosa had a twist to it but it was good too. Can't complain. A nice restaurant at a good location.
a. i. F.
if you love Indian food this place is a MUST. We already expected it to be good but it still went beyond our expectations. Food is just spot on and really good value. definitely one of the highlights of my Edinburgh visit 😄
C. R.
Great place for a UK style Indian dining experience. Big menu and the food is very good. Curries are 100% dependent on the methods of those cooking. The curries here are consistent in quality and texture. The Malabari Prawns was a great dish with lots of flavor, as was their daily special of lemon-cashew rice. Prices are very budget friendly and you could reasonably get a solid meal for two here for £20.
J. D.
Delicious food and helpful staff. The okra curry was particularly good and we loved the onions for topping the popadoms
T. H.
the food here is excellent, no messing about just proper curry cooked properly. the real deal. the service was fantastic. unbelievable value for money. the meal cost 2/3 of what it should have. don't hesitate to come. chicken curry on the bone as good as you could make at home on your best day.
C. C.
We didn’t have a reservation but the host made us feel very welcome and accommodated us as quickly as he could. They sat us a a table and when a better table came up he came over and asked us if we wanted the table at the window….super nice of him! The food was absolutely delicious. The tapas portion sizes are perfect and allowed us to taste more than we would have with larger servings. Everyone was very friendly and service was perfect. Would definitely go back.

m. s.
Amazing place to taste Indian cuisine .We ordered butter chicken and garlic Nan perfect in flavour even we ordered mutton dish that was also very yummy .Good ambience .They should include Indian dessert in their Menu .
K. M.
Food was actually delicious but the portions were really small and they all came at weird times so I had my tiny main meal and then once I had finished I had my bowl of rice on its own. Perhaps it was because it was a big table but honestly it was not the best experience. The quality of the food was good though.
K. B.
The food here is incredible and there's a huge variety! We loved the tapas style dining so that we could try a few different dishes. Drinks options are extensive too, and well priced for the quality of service and food!
M. R.
The food was amazing!! The flavours are delicious, and the cheese nan is yummy. I only gave 4 stars instead of 5 since the sitting was a little too cramped for my taste and there wasn't much room between the tables (but that's just a personal choice).
J. B.
Just nice, tasty and good service. Can recommend the Kingsfischer‘s Lager and the chicken pakora and on bones.
H. F.
We had been here once before and loved it.
This time we had an Itison voucher but failed to notice it was only valid until 17.00 and we arrived without a booking about 17.30.
We were happy still to take a table and just use the voucher at a later date but the gentleman at the door was lovely and said he would honour it this time for us.
The food was excellent as was the service and we will definately be back.
M. F.
We’ve visited all the Mother India’s in Glasgow so we where looking forward to visiting the Edinburgh one and we weren’t disappointed. We both had a great meal, complemented by friendly & helpful staff. Highly recommended
A. I.
brilliant little restaurant with great food and great prices. tasty and hot and great location popular with locals and tourists. must visit if you want some good indian food. only have the one photo but loved the chicken saag. yum!
D. M.
Excellent lunch today at Mother India. My lunch with my friend was excellent. Tremendous value, great service and delicious food. We will definitely be having lunch here again.
G. M.
Visited several times and tried a variety of dishes. Can't praise this place highly enough. Thoroughly recommended. If you are in doubt about the Spiced Haddock, GO FOR IT!! Truly amazing. 🙌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😋🏅🏆
C. B.
Always absolutely amazing food, a beautiful environment, and friendly service. Their aubergine fritters are to die for, and they are gluten free if you're okay with contaminated oil! There are plenty of other gf options and all of them that I have tried are delicious. And my mum is a bit mad for the chicken tikka lababdar.
D. F.
Always advisable to book l did not but luckily l was offered a table. Service was fast, polite and professional. Good food enjoyed by us both and left in less than an hour.
J. C. (.
Really super food. We booked and it was very busy on the Sunday night when we went but I can see why. Really tasty food not just " hot " .
I. G.
Always amazing. No wonder it’s our favourite. Top eating that is very reasonably priced. Nowhere has better food.
C. P.
Good food in very small portions: as it is written in their menu: it’s “tapas” style.
The food is brought very fast - good service.
I have no highlights or bad things to say (other than my clothes were incredibly smelly after I left the place). The restaurant is just good, nothing special, though.
R. S.
Amazing food and staff. It's perfectly clean including the bathrooms. Its reasonably priced and would definitely recommend.
H. S.
It is a good restaurant with decent veg options and has a very nice ambience. Try the sag aloo dosa with a single malt and have a good time together. The staff is very welcoming as well.
J. D.
Best Indian food I’ve ever had in Edinburgh by far. Service was amazing and everything came out super quickly - overall a 10/10 experience
V. v.
Ordered Lamb handi biryani, Chilli garlic chicken, chapati, aloo sag dosa… all 10/10, food is authentic and delicious.
Must visit when in Edinburgh royal mile..
A. H.
Best everyday Indian food in Edinburgh without doubt. Tapas style means you can experiment a little and always keep a spot for your fab dish. Daily specials, prompt service, competitive pricing and amazing food keeps this place busy all the time!! Book in advance !!
s. B.
Well what could I say absolutely 💯 great meal very friendly staff best meal I had in long time highly recommended will be back next visit
Y. M.
Though the food was not in large portion, you may order several dishes, and they are all in reasonable price. My friend and I got really full after finishing these (plus a naan). Love the potato fritter!
M. M.
If you crave an indian food then this is the place!!
As soon as u enter the restaurant, you smell the spices hear the indian music "put you in the mood".
We tried Chicken Curry ofc, Butter chicken and Chili Garlis Chicken.
For me the Chili garlic chicken was the best, if u like spicy dishes pick this one. Its moderate spicy and rich woth flavors.
Coconut icecream was great.
Highly recommended!!
M. M.
Good food quality and speedy service but very less quantity for the fish masala and saag paneer.
S. P.
Nice Indian restaurant with authentic taste. Book a room before you leave. Portions are small and suitable for one person. Location is easily accessible. Staff is good. Ambience is good. Booze available.
G. C.
First visit back to Mother India's in too long a time. The food is simply delicious, as ever, served tapas style (but really, portions are generous) and the staff excellent with nothing too much trouble. Great range of drinks and good non-alcoholic options too. Highly recommended.
A. M.
We saw the good reviews and went there for lunch. Staff are Indian and Scottish and they were very courteous with every one. We ordered for roti, butter chicken, Channa aloo, rice and masala chai. It was medium, nor bland neither spicy, just like home cooked.Really recommend people to visit it once.
E. D.
We had dinner here in 2019 and said we'd come back when in Edinburgh again and we did just that.
The food was again absolutely delicious and cannot fault it.
However the service was not as good as we remembered which was a little disappointing.
We had a booking for half 8 but were left waiting for a good 6-7 minutes on arrival without even being acknowledged. The area is quite small so we really felt 'in the way' as people tried to get past.
Two of our dishes were forgot about and brought out later. Our waiter repeated our order to us so we know we ordered them.
We weren't offered dessert or tea or coffee before leaving either.
We loved the food and understand that somedays things can just go wrong in restaurants so we have given it 4 stars.
Would have no hesitation in returning as we just felt it was just an off day for service.
a. m.
Edinburgh seems to be renown for its Indian food. We were sceptical, but so many people insisted that it was a must do in Edinburgh. We relented and were glad we did. The butter chicken was not as sweet as we were used to but still a favorite. The fish masala was also delicious.
G. S.
M.I. - Glasgow or Edinburgh - always first class! We had another great meal - this time in Edinburgh - cheerful, friendly, super good food!
E. a. R.
Excellent curries. Friendly, helpful staff in a clean, well presented restaurant. Moderately priced. 10/10
X. R.
Indian tapas. The best Indian food we’ve ever eaten. Full on a Monday night which is testament to the great service and reasonable prices. Saag paneer in particular was something special.
A. B.
The service was very good, lamb biryani is full of flavour but chicken tikka dosa is like a chicken kathi roll , but taste is good . !!!!!
t.
Fantastic thali (tapas) eating, amazing courses, so much flavour - loved the Rara Gosht
F.
Service was good, food was ok at best. I do not like diced chicken as was in my chicken and chilli garlic,it just don’t look good. Also chutney and onions that accompany popadoms pre meal should not be added as a cost.
v. M.
That was amazing! Maybe it was how much I wanted a good Indian feast but The idea of small plates so you can order even more dishes is great. So much flavour and even during Edinburgh festival being crazy busy the staff were fast, and helpful :)
A. M.
Great range of delicious Indian dishes. Good seating, helpful staff. Gluten-free options. Easy access off South Bridge and quite close to George IV Bridge.
J. A.
Consistently decent quality food. Just make sure you wear something you aren't overly precious about as the smell of curry goes with you when you leave! 😄
M. W.
This place is so good for delicious tapas-style Indian street food. The waiters are really attentive and the food amazing. Although I am a hardened meat eater, the vegetarian and fish dishes are even better than the meat ones. The food comes out very quickly and all together, so I would suggest ordering only a couple of dishes at a time otherwise the experience will be over too quickly. A must try!!
J. D.
Loved the small portions so you have to order several to make up a full meal. Indian food served tapas style.
A. J.
We had a very pleasant experience last week when we visited mother India. The food was very tasty ,super hot and crispy & masala tea was refreshing. The service was superb with good hygiene standard.Would definitely recommend this place.Worth visiting.
Y. H.
Good service and great food! My friend ordered butter chicken and found that chicken was not fully cooked. Then they soon delivered new bowl of butter chicken with garlic naan.
n. m.
After long time .. finally we found a place which serves authentic Indian cuisine.. it was great experience and location is just near the city centre with very affordable price… dal makhani, paratha, channa dal, aaloo gobhi is must try.
J. K.
Went there at lunchtime and it was busy, testament to the quality of the food. The tapas idea does give you the flexibility to try as many dishes as you please, but if you want to stick to a budget, they have lunch deals with starter, main, nan or rice , coffee, tea or ice cream for under £18. Really liked the spicy keema dosa, actually had this in India and it was pretty close to it.
O. G.
Lovely food and service, only downside was no descriptions under each dish so you didn't know what you were eating!
a. m.
Amazing food especially chicken garlic.portion is little less but food taste is awesome. Staff, ambience & service is also good ....
A. W.
One of my favourite curry restaurant, basically an Indian tapas but the dishes are very tasty. A little larger than a starter portion best to get many dishes and share around. Always found the specials to be outstanding.
W. B.
Super tasty veggie samosa, lamb curry and minced lamb willingly to be repeated. Quick service and nice atmosphere :)
W.
A great place to experience a wide range of small dishes. Very reasonable prices and friendly and fast service. Tasty menu and a good socially distanced setup.
A. H.
Love this place and have been frequenting for years and still aa strong today. Lamb Saag all day long!
r. j.
A really wonderful meal. The food is DIVINE, the only downside was thay there was an air of chaos with the staff. Asking for ice or more of something seemed a bit stressful.
That said, this place has an incredible atmosphere, always buzzing with different types of people. A wonderful wine list and a fantastic choice of dishes. Truly a great choice!
E. W.
Ok food and service. Found the samosa a little bland and greasy. Chilli garlic chicken and Biryani were very good.
K. R.
A great curry place. It came highly recommended by a local friend, and completely lived up to the expectations and then some!
A. J. (.
Good food and authentic taste. Portion size is relatively small, and could be improved.
C. M.
Wow .... Food was delicious. Staff are lovely and friendly. Great value for price. It's good to share all the dishes and get a taste of them all
L. G.
Excellent food and service! Hadn't been there in a while and was just reminded again how amazing their food is!!
S. S.
I went to this place for the first time and many Indian places really don’t know how to cook real Indian food Finally a place that cooks food great and delicious
K. E.
Great food, great service and great price! Don't miss Mother India's Cafe when visiting Edinburgh.
V. P.
Delicious food.. this is one of the best indian restaurant in Scotland.. I had ordered an additional plate of biriyani because of its taste.. you can have hot and spicy food at a moderate price.. not too cheap and not too costly.. good ambiance... you can hear old hindi songs and feel like you are in India...
M. D.
Nice food and beer. To a Londoner it all seemed reasonably priced and arrived promptly on my table
B. G.
Good food. Nice decor. Very good service. No brainer, I'll be back.
R. G.
All dishes were very good. Fast service. Worth a visit.
P. K.
Some of the best Indian food I've had and friendly staff! The tapas style is good if you're indecisive like me, four dishes were perfect for two.
G. C.
Indian "Tapas" style menu, order a couple of dishes each target than one each. Nice food, well presented.
Very busy Indian restaurant, reservations strongly recommended.
A. B.
Very good Indian food in small plates, so you can try many things. Recommended.
A. K.
Amazing restaurant!. Worth every penny. we ordered mostly chicken items and it was delicious. You can ask them if you want to customize something. Service was quick. Size of Dhosa was small compared to what we normally get in other restaurant, maybe that's why they kept that in starter. Overall good and recommended.
R.
Super good foood and nice atmosphere. Definitely worth the money. Been a few times and quality never varies even when busy. Literally the best place to get Asian food anywhere imo and great for gluten free coeliacs because some places still don't know what that is.. Also very clean tables and restrooms so what more could you want!
V. &. S.
Lovely place to eat Indian food. The portions were very less for the price. The staff were great. They accommodated us though we did not had a booking.
Would definitely recommend.
V. C.
Place was very busy, staff were patient and efficient. Food was fantastic and timely. Would definitely go again.
R. S.
Great food great service decent price what more do you need. Well you could add that this places serves India food as tapas. So you order several dishes for your table and share with y po Ur in party. Ki t worked well be for us and we all he had a small selection of many dishes. Great! Recommended.
E. N.
Really nice place, good and tasty Indian food and not expensive!
M. K.
We live near Tooting in South London, brought up in Hounslow Borough and been to several Michelin star Indian food restaurants and this is still some of the best Indian food we've ever had. Such a pleasure, lovely staff though they were crazy busy (unsurprisingly) and every dish had a completely different flavour and spice profile. Yum!
J. S.
Spectacular food. Beautifully balanced, with some surprises along the way. Can’t recommend it enough.
A. S.
Absolutely superb. We went with a £25 itison voucher for a starter main rice/nan bread and ice cream to finish. Absolutely stuffed full, great staff, and the wine was very reasonably priced. We'll be back.
F.
Lovely place. Service was fast. Food was delicious. Very good flavours 4 of the tapas style dishes were perfect between 2 people. Will visit again. :)
J. M.
Delicious food, great service and a good atmosphere in the restaurant
a. p.
Fantastic tapas style Indian food. Very tasty
R. M.
Excellent food - don't miss the fish pakora!
R. W.
Had an excellent lunch, good menu choice and quick service
J. S.
If you like Indian food, you’ll love this. Run to get here.
C. N.
Amazing indian food. Highly recommended and will certainly come back
P. C.
Very tasty Indian food, I loved it!
S. F.
The service was a bit too quick for us, but the food was amazing. The food choice and flavours have lifted the bar on what we would call a good Indian restaurant now.
A. M.
Lovely meal - would advise booking as always really busy.
p. m.
Classic traditional indian tapas, good place to enjoy this Kind of food
D. E. M.
Awesome little tapas restaurant with a great selection of food that arrives quickly.
A.
Delicious Indian currys and naan breads. Great location and atmosphere. Friendly staff. A little expensive but very good quality and tasty food. Highly recommend! The currys are very flavorful and different. Just wish the portion was a little bigger for the price.
I. G.
Probably the best Indian I've ever had.
Went with a couple of friends.
Had a fantastic meal.
Really love the tapas style where you can choose a few dishes.
I had 3 dishes with rice and naan and was totally stuffed.
Incredible flavours and well presented.
Good service from staff.
Can't wait to go again.
R. G.
Busy place on a Friday evening. Not your typical Indian restaurant. much more modern and dishes I have not heard before. Service was quick and even made me a keema nann which was not on the menu.
P. M.
Very pleasant, very tasty, great service and a good price...
M. L.
Sweet waiter. Delicious food. Casual atmosphere. Dhal Makhini should be illegal, too good!
A. B.
Not a fan of Indian, but the place seems nice. Food was a bit bland for me, but maybe because I enjoy the spice and it wasn't..
W. A.
Nice food but only giving 4 stars because like all of the other restaurants and take away no one in Edinburgh knows how to make biryani. Because own its own is whole world of taste flavours and aroma. But all the take aways and restaurants ignore that and think fried rice with hot curry sauce is biryani. No no no no
G. P.
Absolutely delicious! We had the saag paneer, fish pakora, chicken curry and aubergine. All were fantastic and it's so well priced!
Definitely book since it's busy
T. T. G. M.
There were 3 of us, visiting in June, just after lockdown. It was a Tuesday lunchtime and quite quiet. We were welcomed to a pleasant window table. We ordered a number of small dishes, tapas style, to share. The menu had a separate section for vegans/vegetarians, but did not specify which items were vegan. In fact, the menu offered no description of the dishes whatsoever! It was a case of "style over substance". Luckily, the helpful waiting staff brought over the old menu with descriptions and advised which items were vegan.
We chose dosas, palora Dahl and lots of other dishes from the menu. We had 3 kinds of naan and 3 chapatis, as well as rice. We also ordered drinks and chilled water with garnish was provided without us having to ask. The food was fresh and delicious. It was brought quickly and nothing was too much trouble.
The toilets were nice and clean.
Our bill came to just over £68 which was a bit pricey for lunch, but we had ordered loads. The restaurant also gave us tinfoil dishes to take our leftovers home, which was a lovely gesture. I'd definitely go back. The food was lovely and so were the staff.
w.
Mother India is curry mecca! the most flavoursome curry I've had in Edinburgh. beautiful flavours and rich sauces. the Chicken Tikka Masala (which they did as a tapas plate, not on menu, after i asked for it) was the best I've ever had. the fish dishes are divine as well - the spiced haddock is amazing. Can't wait to go back!
A. b.
Cannot rate this place highly enough! Food is fantastic, staff are exceptional, service is fast. Some of the best Indian food I’ve had and some great twists on classics. Great for groups and couples as dishes are perfect for sharing. Considering moving to Edinburgh for this place
M. L.
Went for lunch on Monday - back to it's very best cooking. Will be back.
L. D.
This is one of the best Indian places I’ve ever been to! Butter chicken 10/10!
P. B.
Great place to go. Love the ginger and chicken dish.
R. S.
Great take on Indian food, ideal for sharing. Between 3 of us, we ordered 9 dishes and that was more than plenty. Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff!
M. D. C.
Landed in Edinburgh will clear intension not to have Indian food whilst we are on holiday .. in rush a first day ordered couple of biryani allowing some time to settle ..... after day 3 still ordering & eating Indian food from Mother India's cafe ohh boy delicious food. Every dish is top notch & very generous portions. Kudos to the Chef ...Thanks
T. M.
Really nice place, great veggie and vegan options. Little expensive but always busy and a nice crowd with good service :)
T. N.
Very good food with good service. Price was reasonable for the quality received. Obviously appreciated by the younger element who made up most of the customers whilst there.
M. R.
This is the tastiest Indian restaurant in Edinburgh, we've been several times and it is always consistently good.
The staff are exceptionally friendly, the place is clean and comfortable and the food is amazing. The fish pakora is fresh, light and beautifully white. Everything has a real depth of flavour.
Shame they don't have the drumstick lollies on the way out anymore......bring them back please!
I. J.
Top notch Indian restaurant popular at all times of day. Karahi Mushrooms are to die for. Railway Lamb Curry with plain rice is delicious. Naans fresh and buttery. Highly recommended for those seeking a fresh perspective on traditional Indian favourites.
K. C.
It was good, but not amazing. I think the food runs a bit on the spicy side. Crowded, even on a Tuesday.
A. T.
One of the best restaurants in Edinburgh.
Hearty food, good portions, dhal is great but a bit heavy (too oily).
J. P.
Scottish vibes meet Indian aromas .. its a charming restaurant , very friendly staff , the food is delicious , quantity is good .. for an Indian traveler craving for home style food , this one is the place .. some innovations around tapas and Indian food .. nice .. shall visit again .. great menu ..
M. S.
great service, great food & decent prices! if you like indian food, you gotta stop by for lunch/dinner.
S. G.
Excellent carry out - we decided to do this for staff Christmas lunch, and it was brilliant. Great food, great service.
s. m.
Really good place.. Nice ambience.. But less quantity of food.. Less value for money... Pricey
M. S.
Enjoyed our meal and really lovely staff
B. K.
Fabulous food, friendly and helpful staff, didn't feel particularly covid safe as a woman at the table next to us was coughing pretty constantly, and the restaurant was packed. Ate an left quite quickly.
R. L.
New to Edinburgh and decided to have a takeaway as family were staying. On the basis of the reviews we went with Mother India Cafe in Edinburgh. A great choice, the service whilst ordering and collecting were both excellent, it was a large order and the food was ready at the stated time. Everything tasted delicous, lots of smiles all round. Would highly recommend and will certianly be back it was excellent.
J. M.
Love eating the fragrant, delicately spiced and delicious dishes at this restaurant. Warm atmosphere and service always great.
Strongly recommend.
C. M.
Great choice for a curry with the family. My wee boy likes a Korma and was disappointed that it wasn't on the menu, no worries as the waitress said Korma is no problem to knock up even though its not on the menu, (we didn't even ask) one happy 7 year old! Staff were busy but very efficient and helpful. £69 for 3 courses for 2 adults and 2 kids. I had mango cider which was superb with the meal. Highly recommended.
U. S.
Amazing Indian food I got hooked on their ginger chicken spinach with peshwari naan.
W. K.
Some of the best curry in Edinburgh served as tapas so you can try several of the dishes. Great vegan options. Lots of seating.

Following a day spent touring Loch Lomond and Stirling Castle, dinner at Mother India's Cafe really was the icing on the cake. Seriously all the dishes were on point, but the main call outs for me were the lamb chops and the monk fish. Absolutely delicious! In fact so much so a repeat booking has already been made for Friday evening. A very worthy 5-stars!
R. C.
Wonderful night out , food amazing, staff amazing , great night out will recommend to everyone please try will not be disspointed, can't wait to visit again
O. M.
Fabulous restaurant - loved the tapas-style food - table service was quick and staff were nice - dish highlights were the karahi, fish pakora and peshwari naan - definitely recommend going here for a meal!
B.
Pleasant Indian food in smaller portions. I enjoyed the mango cider. I was eating alone and I was happy to find that the total bill was less than £25 for two tapas dishes, rice, bread, a drink and desert which I felt was great value. The food was good although I found that it lacked a subtlety in the spices. The gelebub and ice cream for desert was delicious. The staff were welcoming and although the place was busy I only had a short wait for a table.
K. M.
The food was absolutely delicious, and great value. Lovely veggie and vegan options.
P. B.
A great find. A sensible range of dishes with some specials. The 'Tapas' concept is pretty much what I would call an Indian - choose some dishes and rice and share them! Still the restaurant was extremely clean (it was good to see even the menus all being wiped down at the end of the evening), the service great and the food excellent. I was surprised in the end just how good a value the meal had been.
A. P.
Great meal, very friendly staff. Busy though!
J. S.
Great value, the food is amazing. I would recmend the spiced haddock. Always busy so you will need to book ahead.
N. M.
Great curry dishes, excellent cooking. You get a smallish portion off a great menu of fish, poultry, red meat, veg. All tastes catered for. 4 of the small plates between two is adequate with nan, rice, chapati etc.
Drinks are standard nothing special. Service is very good and friendly. Gets very busy so book. You will love it.
S. P.
What a fantastic Indian restaurant. The food is extraordinary full of flavors, right amount of spice and depth. Best part is, it has tapas style menu, I suggest trying more than one item. If you are getting Chapati get 2 they are delicious but very thin. By far the best Indian food I had outside India. Make reservation, but if you are alone they have seats for single and was able to find a seat right away.
S. S.
This has always been the Curry House in Edinburgh, to go to, It's!It's just so good, full of flavour, never been to India but feel the food would taste like this. You should try it. 😉
R. R.
Very enjoyable visit. Good food quickly served. Like the information tapas-style menu.
B. B.
Wonderful experience as I've never tried curry before. The host and serving staff were kind and the food arrived to the table quickly.
C. Q.
Excellent food which is coupled with truly excellent service. Great menu options, and was very full after my meal after ordering two dishes. All servers were very polite and professional. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and definitely would come here again myself
M. M.
Amazing food and service. We had so much of it and everything was delicious. One of our favourite Indians to date!
M. R.
Superb food, excellent service, food came quick and fresh. I was surprised with the bill, it was lower than I guessed, great value for money.
I have read some negative reviews complaining of portion size! Please be aware that the concept here is similar to tapas style. The idea is to order a few dishes and make up your own feast!
J. S.
Loved it. Having sharing portions is great. Seven dishes between 4 of us plus rice etc was perfect
D. R.
Awesome Indian food concept with small dishes that you can share. We got about 7 of them for the table and they were all delicious. Our kids are not always big fans of Indian food, but they loved it.
Definitely worth a visit as a change from the pub grub.
T. R.
First time having Indian food from a restaurant and was very impressed! Delicious flavor and loved the small portions to be able to try a variety. Great value for your money. Highly recommend getting some dessert because it was just as tasty as the meal. I will definitely return if I am ever in Edinburgh again. It is a must visit!
S. M.
Never disappointed with mother India's food. However it was incredibly noisey and busy leading to a little confusion and subsequent delay in our order.
J. B.
Went there quickly between 2 assignments..
Impressive fast quality service
N. J.
Paratha was a bit dry and bready, but the curry and service made up for it
S. S.
Just Delicious 🤤, Being an Indian and a foodie person i really struggle to find authentic Indian food in UK, During my visit in Edinburgh thought to give a try and surprisingly the food was delicious and the price are also very reasonable as compared to other indian restaurants in Edinburgh, i will highly recommend must have food here if you are planning to visit Edinburgh, try to book a table in advance as this place gets busier.
P. W.
Nice indian dishes. You order several small dishes tapas style.
J. C.
Hands down the tastiest Indian meal we've ever had. Every dish we had from the tapas-style menu was flavourful, reasonably spiced (but not overpowering) and utterly delicious. Would recommend the spiced haddock to anyone interesting in trying something a little different, but not too adventurous. The rice was seasoned beautifully and the samosas and naans were insanely good. The service was fast and efficient, but very friendly and welcoming.
If we come back to Edinburgh, we're definitely coming back here. Best meal out I've had in a long time. Would recommend booking in advance for a Friday/Saturday or busier seasons.
A. J.
Loved the vegetarian food. Ambience is amazing and location is perfect. Highly recommend. Definitely worth a visit if you like indian food
B. G.
Hidden away in Infirmary Street, this is an excellent tapas style restaurant. If you enjoy Indian food then this is worth a visit, especially at lunchtime when you may want a lighter meal. The menu offers the usual range, starters, vegetable, chicken, meat and fish dishes. Served in small portions, hence tapas, it lets you choose a range of dishes. The food is excellent, full of flavour. The decor is modern. The toilets were spotless. I've visited the Glasgow restaurant many times but didn't know about the Edinburgh one. The Glasgow one is on my list of favourite restaurants. I've now added the Edinburgh one.
M. P.
Best Indian food this side of the continent!!
M. I.
They served great foods so fast that I could reach the station on time.
J. S.
Exceptionally good food, quick service and reasonable prices
S. P. E.
Fusion-style Indian food served as Tapas. Very happy with the food and the service offered by Hiren. Would definitely recommend.
D. M.
Food is presented in a tapas style format so excellent for trying different dishes and sharing which was great. Found myself struggling to find dishes that I would like on the menu but the food that came was superb. Very busy so recommended to book a table. As it was so busy the service was slightly lacking but it made for a good atmosphere in the restaurant. Perhaps more than you'll usually pay for an Indian restaurant but the different tapas style format and great food make it one of the best Indian restaurants in Edinburgh.
B. W.
After reading the reviews, we thought we would give Mother India's a try, and we were not disappointed.
The food is served in small tapas size portions, which turned out to be a great idea as it gave us the opportunity to try several different dishes.
All of the food was delicious, and served by friendly efficient staff.
Overall an excellent experience.
P. S. G.
Loved it... excellent afternoon tea and drinks
c. c.
Great meal. Good service. Be sure to book as it gets busy
L. F.
Very enjoyable experience. The "Indian tapas" formula let's you taste many different dishes, all very tasty. Although you might end up spending more than a traditional restaurant at the end of the day, because you'll want to try them all...
Service was faultless.
R. W.
Lovely food. They were well set up for social distancing. Friendly staff. We didn't feel rushed at all. Highly recommended. Consider making your reservation a couple of weeks in advance to have your choice of time slots as it is a very popular spot.
P. N.
Great food and well experienced staff..Definitely will be back soon!!
J. C.
We've been in Edinburgh for 3 years now and struggled to find an Indian restaurant that we'd go back to, but that was amazing!! We really enjoyed our meal, and we'll definitely be ordering from Mother India Cafe again!
B. S.
Delicious, delicious food. Had a great meal here and would return if we're back in Edinburgh. Good portion sizes. Not too spicy. Very tasty. Comfortable location with nice decor and good facilities.
R. S.
Delicious, hearty Indian food that tastes like it's made with love! Very good value for money
A. J.
This place serves Indian food but the taste is not good and the quantity is very less. We ordered aalo chat in starter and we even confirmed if it’s authentic and the manager (who was an Indian) assured it to be great in taste. it was nothing, but mashed potatoes served with chutneys. My husband liked this place a lot but I personally found it very expensive and the quantity to be very very less.
D. B.
Mother India consistently delivers outstanding Indian food. The place can be very busy as it has a very positive reputation in Edinburgh so booking is advised. There is a wide selection of food for both carnivores and herbivores. Try something new - you will not be disappointed.
C. R.
Fantastic Indian food really tasty. You must try if in Edinburgh and want some great Indian food.
K. C.
One of my favourite indian restaurants in Edinburgh. The fried aubergine dish was my favourite of seven tapas style dishes we ordered. A tasty meal overall but found the prawns and parts of the lamb quite overcooked on the second visit. Great service usually but found our waiter on the evening a little cold. Would eat here again for an overall delicious dining experience
R. C.
Best Indian food place in Edinburgh!
A. C.
Beautiful food served quickly, amazing value, excellent quality. Don't have anything bad to say about it at all
P. S.
Fantastic menu and great service. I had two dishes I've never had before in any Indian restaurant, a haddock dish and a vegan broccoli &spinach dish, both if which were superb. Will definitely visit again next time I'm in town
D. P.
Went there on a weekday round 4:30-5pm, already busy. Food is nice, it serves in ‘tapas’ version for Indian food which is strange, but food is tasty, the amount of the tapas just filled in my tummy, maybe 1.5 portions would be prefect.
Atmosphere was ok, enough, it was busy so me and my friend had to speak louder which was also ok too. Nobody was bother about the noise anyway, everyone was enjoying their meal and accompanies. Would go again to try different dishes.
D. B.
Really good choices of food. Everything we ordered was so very tasty and much enjoyed. Social distancing was well in place. Staff were helpful, masked and attentive. Thoroughly recommend it.
J. D.
Great little restaurant serving a decent range of small, tasty dishes which are perfect for sharing. The naans are freshly baked; they come piping hot and are highly recommended! Other than the chicken being a touch overcooked, everything else we chose (5 dishes between the four of us) was good
T. W.
Probably the best India food I've had in Edinburgh. Friendly, well lit, extensive range of smallish dishes cooked with fresh ingredients and spices. Think of it as a kind of tapas bar that serves authentic Indian dishes. Fairly priced.
V. L.
My favourite Indian restaurant in Edinburgh, it’s always pack full of people. Decent price, service is quick and food is always fresh and lovely. Highly recommend if you like Indian food 👍🏻
g. s.
Great Indian restaurant well worth a visit. They work tapas style so rather than starters and main course they bring it all out together. The portions are smaller so you can pick a couple of dishes each without feeling greedy. Ideal for sharing. The staff are friendly and there's always a good buzz about the place. The prices are really low.
S. L.
Omg so good, not your standard Indian meals. One of my favorites Basilikum Chicken Curry. The food was amazing and the staff members super friendly. But make reservations before you want to go, it's a busy place
L. H.
Absolutely rammed when I visited on a Wednesday evening. Still managed to find us somewhere to sit. Service was a bit slow initially but as soon as I raised my head to look for a server they were very prompt in helping me order. Food was amazing and will certainly visit next time I am in Edinburgh. I was recommended to go to this place by the hotel I was staying in and what a recommendation!
A.
My favourite restaurant. I would have no hesitation in recommending Mother India. The food is first class, the service is first class. You need to try this restaurant!! 😋
M. E.
No words describe how good this place is.
Haddock is the most amazing dish I have ever tasted.
M. T. M. L.
Brilliant dinner! Had the fish pakora, garlic/butter naan, saag paneer, butter chicken & monkfish tikka. Would highly highly recommend the monkfish tikka.
S. R.
Reasonable prices and probably the best butter chicken I've ever had. Very busy (can tell it's popular). Good service and lovely Italian wine that compliments the Indian food beautifully 👌 spot on. Will definitely be back!
J. S.
Amazing tapas Indian food. Unique way of dining. Stunning tastie food.
Cant wait to return
C. D.
Delicious Indian food served in tapas style small dishes so it’s great if you like to have a little taste of everything. The service was really quick and friendly. I’d been to Mother India in Glasgow and it was really one of the best curries I’ve ever tasted. I wasn’t sure if this Edinburgh branch would match up but it was really excellent too.
R. L.
Lovely dishes and good service, but exceptionally noisy downstairs . The food made up for it though
A. F.
Really delicious authentic Indian food. Daily special was great value.
L. L.
Extremely tasty and affordable indian food! Appropriate size of the portions - you have to order 2 dishes per person and get to try more. Improvement points: staff working at the bar should try doing their stuff a bit less loud. Apart from that, it's an A+!
P. H.
Great food and amazing tastes from the various curries and starters don't miss out if you appreciate home cooking Indian style
S. B.
I loved eating here! I came before the dinner rush, so it was quiet and relaxing. The food was very very good. I ordered vegetable samosas, garlic Naan, butter chicken, and another chicken curry I've forgotten the name of. I also ordered dessert, coffee, and a Chai tea. Everything was absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. The waitstaff were friendly and attentive. The prices were also very reasonable. I highly recommend this place.
N. B.
Amazing food. Not really much more to say. I've been a few times, both for lunch and dinner, and I can never fault it. The staff are great, the prices are decent and the portion are good. Definitely recommend the first chicken dish on the menu - can't remember its name. And the mango chutney.
I. S.
I stumbled across this place by accident, i am glad i did.
The staff are so friendly and accommodating to my families needs. The food is great and prices are reasonable, unlike most other indian restaurants, this indian cafe looks like a traditional english pub.
K. F.
If you visit Edinburgh you must eat here. I have never tasted a better chapati. Alll the food was flavourful and fresh.
Lovely welcoming staff, full of smiles, and a great atmosphere too.
Also - impressively clean & spacious toilets and overall high standard of general cleanliness
A. M.
I'm so glad we are here!! Tappas style so you can taste a lot of dishes, we loved each thing we ordered, especially the chefs special lamb dish. The place was packed when we stopped for lunch, but the server and food still came quickly. Very casual atmosphere, not a tourist trap, authentic flavors, highly recommend.
C. D.
Everything tasted very good, I recommend the butter chicken, chilli garlic chicken and the lamb saag.
S. M.
Best food in town no question. Great service and amazing food.
s. d.
Quick service always busy the wait is worthwhile .
H. G.
Stressful experience. In and out in 20 mins. Argument with customer could not be helped but ruined atmosphere for us. Food nice especially the fish. Even though it is tapas style portions very small for sharing. Not cheap
D. K.
Amazing as always, great food, great service.
So many restaurants could learn from this place.
R. P.
Friendly service, tasty menu with nice atmosphere. We've been coming here for more than ten years and recently my bff has said the quality has declined but I still like it. It is in a great locality and perfect for gluten free dining.
J. M.
This is a great, small Indian restaurant selling delicious food in small tapas style dishes for sharing. Some quirky dishes combining Indian with Scottish style - curried mince and peas fur example.
Friendly staff that know when to come to table and when to let you be.
Lots of repeat visits. A real Edinburgh favourite. Book ahead if you can, particularly at weekends. If you go to one Indian restaurant when you visit Edinburgh, go here.
j.
Good food one of the best in Scotland. The food came fast, but they forgot one of the dishes. It took 5 minutes and it was there though. Reasonably priced as well. No question about spiciness. But for a "normal" European it was spicy enough.
Recommended.
A. C. (.
Excellent selection of extremely well crafted dishes which work as sharing portions. One word of warning, they go heavy on cilantro with a bunch of dishes. The beer selection leaves much to be desired, but is serviceable.
E. L.
Really great restaurant experience. Service was prompt and helpful even though there were at least 2 other tables of 10 people.
The menu is extensive and actually noted that lamb may be mutton (which is one of my pet peeves when they don’t). Dishes are exactly the right size for sharing about 4-5 between 2 if you’ve big appetites.
Particular highlights were the lamb saag and the chapati which were excellent and so fresh. The prawn curry was also an honourable mention for best dish of the night.
The Chana daal wasn’t my most favourite but tasty with some mango chutney added.
Price was very reasonable for two (under £50) with two drinks.
J. E.
Great place to eat! Meals sizes are smaller due to tapas style but it gives you a good opportunity to buy many different dishes. Food was great. Only downsize is the table layout made for no room between other guests.
S. C.
This place is amazing! Had 4 dishes plus some garlic naan and some rice between 2 and it was so cheap and more than enough food. The dishes were also fantastic and delicious. Massively recommend the garlic naan and the chicken tikka dish, I've never had a similar dish before but it was so creamy and smooth. The place is super busy but still feels homey and the waiting staff are never far away to help! 5/5
I. C.
Incredible flavours and selection, at very reasonable tapas sizes, allowing you to try a few different curries especially if there with a group. The mango lassi is good too. Perhaps a tad noisy in the centre of the restaurant, but great nonetheless
J. H.
Very good food, absolutely delicious with a great choice on the menu. Very nice atmosphere and great to book for a large group. I had my 21st birthday meal here and it was wonderful. The staff were very good despite the large group on a busy night, they were accommodating and allowed my parents to bring in a cake and candles to embarrass me with...
N. B.
Great Indian food, love the idea of Indian tapas. Good value for money, dishes are roughly £5-6 each. Service was a little slow, but the food came very quickly from the kitchen. I'd easily go there again
A. K.
Amazing! We didn’t have a reservation and server immediately tried to assist us. Food came out quickly and was very tasty. Tapas style but portions still filling. By far one of the best Indian food places I’ve been to.
B. E. T. A.
This is very good. You get small boils of food which allows you a large choice if in a group. It is easy to over spend by ordering lots of different things of the menu. The food all comes at once starters mains etc. So eat quick or it gets cold unless you likr starter and mains together.
H. P.
Very good food. Indian tapas - what a great way to try out a variety of dishes. Nice clean spot, lots of room and nice quiet atmosphere. Would highly recommend. Also try the Mango and Lime cider!!!
A. S.
Great Taste, staff's friendly and joyful.
If you like indian food, worth visiting.
N. L.
The food is great! We wanted to go for Indian food while in town and came here based off reviews. I've never been to a tapas style Indian restaurant before, but got two lamb dishes (1 was dosa). They were amazing. Would definitely come back
C. S.
Tried this place with my wife. Great because you can try lots of different curries with their tapas style portions. All food was delicious and we will be returning to try other dishes. Highly recommend the food. I recommend making a reservation as it is a busy place.
A. W.
I have always been a fan of tapas style dining and Mother India cafe is a great example of this done right. The dishes are all small, around £5/6 per dish so if you are in a group I would suggest a couple of dishes per person for sharing. The food is always fresh and ridiculously tasty. Very different to your usual Indian takeaway. It is a very popular restaurant so you might often have to wait for a table, but if you ask nicely, you can wait in the Royal Oak next door with a drink, and one of the lovely waiters will come and get you when your tables ready!
L. R.
I've been to both the Edinburgh and Glasgow branches of this restaurant and the food and service in both has been great. I love the fact that it's like tapas and you can order several dishes to try as to choose just one would be impossible. One of my favourite curry restaurants.
D. R.
Busy Sunday early evening found a queue already there but then we were all led to dine down stairs which was lovely. Easy listening old style music which was a nice change.. Great choice of Indian "tapas" especially the curried haddock, lamb biryani, good drinks menu, loved the Mango cider !
s. k.
Food was good but serving size is really small. It's just good for one person. Also a bit expensive for the quality and amount they serve. However so far best indian food outside India especially if u r typical North Indian spicy lover.
D. M.
Excellent food, quality was extremely divine so much to choose from and the price is very very good well worth every penny
P. V.
Good good and is not too heavy on the Pocket!
A. G.
Some of the best Indian food we've ever had. Staff were very welcoming and the service was excellent. Highly recommended.
A. E.
Amazing food and amazing service recommend the butter chicken and the curry haddock would definitely go again
A. J.
Absolutely unbelievable food. Would highly recommend. Smaller portions to give it a tapas feel and the Tikka massala was spicier than normal but this was better for me as I prefer a bit of a kick. Lovely place.
J. H.
Great value for money, bought way too much food, they did offer to bag up what we left but we were too stuffed to even think about eating it later. Recommend the Lamb Saag and Keema Samosa, but I do have to throw in that my own homemade butter chicken is better... which I never thought I'd say...
E. T.
It never disappoints. I have been eating in the Mother India restaurants in Edinburgh and Glasgow for many years. Positively the best Indian cuisine I have tasted outside of India. Definitely recommended.
J. D. (.
My new favourite Indian food.
After eating Indian food over 40 years, this is the very best Indian food I have had in years. You will not be disappointed.
H. M.
Pretty good food, but perhaps a bit under-seasoned. These definitely don't seem like small plates, as we left absolutely stuffed and unable to finish everything. The service is friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is very nice.
A. R.
Wow, all of the staff were so lovely and it was nice bringing our 1 year old daughter there too. Not a big family restaurant but I'd say if you have 1 small child then I'd say it's good. Great food.
N.
Good but not great, staff lacking in enthusiasm, plenty of better value, higher quality Indian fare within walking distance. Tapas-style delivery doesn't work with this style of cooking in my opinion, and it adds £££s to the final bill. Overall......over-rated
S. r.
Took my friends from Norway and Texas here for a 602 birthday meal for my sis Gro's birthday. Couldn't fault the service or the food. I've been a chef in Indian restraunts for almost 30 yrs before retiring. This was Authentic Indian food great taste great Quality. And the place is immaculately clean. Thanks for a great evening see you soon. Xx
a. g.
They offer authentic Indian food which taste delicious along with a very good ambience. Loved this place and the food.
M.
Great friendly service. Very accomodating as hadnt booked. This place is very popular after 6 so booking a recommend. Pop to the Royal Oak next door for a great beer and folk music first. Food is not like your average indian, individual bowls of your choice. We had 6 bowls between 4 plus rice and naan and was just enough. Fish was the best.
G. M.
I have had curries all over the world. From Kabul to Bradford, Doha to Manchester, Kenya to New York, Baghdad to Sheffield, Bahrain to Bristol and Penang to Peterborough and this is by far the best curry I have ever had. Pickle tray, i have had better, but the range and taste is fantastic. If i lived in Edinburgh it would be my restaurant of choice. Well done. In addition, to let you know how great it was , we were in on a Wednesday at 1800 and it was packed.
R. M.
What a surprise this restaurant serves Aloo Chat in such an elegant way and delicious flavours I could eat 3 or more portions honest best aloo chat ever and never disappoint my family friends when I recommend them to here.
V. K.
One of the best Not just in Edinburgh but also in UK maybe.
Very close to City center and they serve awesome authentic Indian food with awesome taste.
Staff is friendly and will speak with you most of of Indian languages to surprise you 😊
C. T.
Very good Indian food, wide variety of options to choose from. You can go for small plates and share or go for your very own meal. Prices are reasonable, I would usually spend around 8-10 pounds for one person. The location is not great though and there is no wi-if access, while your mobile network might also not work at all, especially if you’re at Vodafone. This is the only reason why I decided to deduct one star. Other than that, it’s a great Indian place and the staff is lovely.
D. J.
Set back from the bustle on the drag up from Princes Street, we found MIC at the top of Infirmary Street. We walked straight into the welcoming restaurant and were greeted warmly and shown straight to a table in an empty downstairs eating area. This was short-lived as it was filled with excitable diners within a few minutes. The service was knowledgeable and enthusiastic and the food was tremendous. We followed the menu's guidance and ordered a selection of dishes to share between us as a family. Whilst I would recommend everything from the pakoras to the peshwari naan, a special mention has to go to the Railways Lamb Curry.
D. W.
Execellent menu with dishes served tapas style. I enjoyed my lunch so much that I went back for dinner. The curry chicken is so delicious and I recommend the daal, aloo gobi, and this spicy lamb dish wrapped in a pancake (forgot the name).
So, so good.
S. K.
A beautiful plethora of dishes none of which disappoint in flavour and presentation. I highly recommend the lamb dishes (basil coriander lamb or lamb saag), the sauces are creamy and the lamb tender. To top it off the service was fast and the atmosphere buzzing. You know you've found a good Indian restaurant when you open the door and your mouth starts watering!
M. A.
Never disappointed. Achari chicken is perfect every time. The rice can be a bit hit or miss, but the dishes are so tasty we can always overlook that. We love that we can get 3-4 dishes to share and still not break the bank.
J. M.
Excellent Indian food. This is a BUSY place, you will need a reservation if you want a table between 5:30 and 7:30 pm (we visited the city the last week of May - tourist and marathon crowds). The manager keeps a sharp eye on the door, and we had our table within 5 mins of arriving. The menu had 25 choices, everything is served in small metal pots. Rice and Nan bread are extras, they do server popadom and chutney as starters.
3 pots with rice and bread was enough to fill us... and in a beer and a green tea the bill came to $48 .ca. service was on the slow side, but we expected that given the place was packed.
Worth the wait!
A. G.
We had the best evening at Mother India. An amazing (but not too overwhelming) tapas style Indian menu. We were a group of six and each picked two dishes to share and it worked out perfectly - along with 2 rice and 3 naan breads. All dishes were an absolute hit (you can’t go wrong) and it was incredible value for money at £23 a head with 1 drink each and popadoms. You must come here if you are in Edinburgh!
T. v. D.
We ordered three different dishes(lamb, chicken and vegetable curry) a bowl of rice and a naan bread. This was more than enough for the two of us.
The chicken and vegetable curry were really spicy.
Staff is friendly.
C.
Great place. If you get food envy or like trying lots of different dishes then this is the place for you. The quality of the food is spot on and full of flavour. Probably need to book because it's always super busy
a. w.
One of if not the best curry wev ever had. Great service, really friendly and food was amazing. Served in decent time aswell. 5 stars for us.
L. M.
Best Indian Thali place in Edinburgh- without a doubt.
I tend to come here as a treat, but it certainly is worth it! We order 2 dishes each, with rice and naan and 'one for the table'.
The staff are amazing. They very sweetly offered us the first table available or said we could wait for a more private one, which we did, and I'm glad we did, because it's a busy wee place.
We tried to book a table for 8.30pm on a Wednesday and the earliest they could do was 9.15pm (and it was packed!)
J. H.
Disappointed based on the hundreds of positive reviews. Nice restaurant with reasonable wait time, but the food fell short. The naan lacked flavor and the vegetable curry was unremarkable and lacking in actual curry sauce. That being said, the tapas serving size was very welcomed in comparison to usual large portions at other Indian restaurants.
K. M. A. A. I.
Recommended by my colleague.. first time visit.. experience was decent overall. We went on quite late so couldn't order any starter dish. Had butter chicken, lamb saag and aloo gobi matar.. chicken dish was not as per expectation.. only 3 piece of chicken.. lamb and veg dish was ok but nothing special.. but desserts were fantastic.. gulab jamun was absolutely brilliant. The service was great in general.. the waiter was very friendly .. knowledgable as well... the food quality can be improved but overall vibe from the staff and atmosphere made it positive
王.
The food is nice and the staffs are friendly
P. S.
Limited menu but amazing food. Menu is in a tapas style, so smaller curry dishes which is great, as portions are often too large.
Good service but very busy most evenings, booking is essential.
G. D.
Just as amazing as I remember it being from last time. Each dish was so different from the next and so fresh and tasty. Thank you mother india.
G. R.
Food was delicious. Staff friendly and polite. Outstanding. Best I've had in years.....
E. F. R.
Great Indian tapas style dishes so you can try a few which is great. Service here is always very fast and efficient and food excellent. Friendly service and nice atmosphere.
Highly recommended
K. B.
One of the Edinburgh favourites! Very flavoursome food, good variety and reasonable prices. Can be quite busy at peak times, so it is usually a good idea to book a table beforehand. The Peshwari Naan is highly recommended as a side dish!
S. B.
Extremely good Indian subcontinent food, but quite pricey. Nàan was spectacular.

We really dug this place. The service was decent, but didn't come to our table often enough. Again, we were really struggling for a variety of foods in the parts of Europe we were living in. It was nice to have Indian for a change of pace. Portions were very small, almost like tapas.
T. R. N.
Great little Indian, flavours are outstanding, however please let people actually finish their meal before trying to clear plates, if others are still eating don't clear anyones dishes.
T. O.
Really nice place to visit, friendly and attentive staff and great food at a reasonable price.
Would recommend and already planning a return visit.
p. r.
Great food, really tasty. Would definitely go again
J. G.
I've had both delivery and eat in at this place and both times were good. Lamb railway gets a particular mention. I would say naan slightly dry but not enough to remove a star
T. M.
It's been 9 years since we were last in Edinburgh and had our first experience at Mother India and last night's dinner did not disappoint. When you have raved about place for as many years as we had, it's easy to worry if you've have set unrealistic expectations. Until our next visit!
s. m.
Mother India easily lives up to its recommendations.
The food is simply awesome and the staff is very friendly. On top of that, the rates are very low.
If you love Indian food, this one is must visit!
K. C.
1st time here well impressed would recommend. Hope it's the same standard of food & service.
C. F.
Was okay overall. Slow service on the uptake, eventually took food order and then we had to ask about drinks. It was busy but thats a basic to get a drink order in ASAP. Not convinced we got the right dishes, 6 of us in group and some dishes came twice but only one ordered. Not sure I'd go back, had better Indians.
G. S.
One of the best Indian meals I have ever had, tapas approach makes it easy to try a good range of different dishes. Good atmosphere and prompt service. Will most definately go back.
M. R.
Love love loved my visit here. Food is great, massive difference to your conventional Indian restaurant.
Love the tapas style dishes.
Usually order 3 dishes and rice side to share and a naan bread.
B. S.
Love this place! Went with family for the first time in January 2020 and had the most delicious meal. So tasty and really lovely staff. Going again tomorrow!
I. S.
good Indian food, nice atmosphere and aroma, fast serving, but be aware that there comes a lot of people so you will have to wait for 10-15 mins to be seated. good price performance.
S. D.
10 years since my first visit and quality has not slipped. Balanced tangy fresh dishes. The okra and potato side is a main event in itself. The chilli garlic chicken is as good as curry gets. Up there with London's Veera Swami and Tayyabs.
C. H.
Fabulous little gem of a restaurant. Delicious food at reasonable prices. Staff are friendly and helpful without being over attentive. Even picky daughter found food she enjoyed. We'll be back.
D. A. A. D.
It's one of the best (if not the best) Indian restaurants ever. The taste is very explicit. The portioning is nice for sharing and trying many different dishes in the same visit.
L. M.
We didn’t have a reservation and they sat us immediately with two glasses of water and lemon ready for us. Definitely recommend the Railway (Chefs Special) & the Chicken Tikka with the cashew nuts! Quality food and amazing service.
J. H.
I was told by my friend that this place gets great reviews. I was disappointed. Waited ages without anyone acknowledging we were standing at the door (I guess you have that luxury when you are this popular!)
Food was average compared to many Indian restaurants I have been to and the decor is straight out of the 80's.
Overrated !
T. A.
A gem of an Indian. The menu is nice and simple but everyone in the party was blown away by the flavours in the food. It gets awesome reviews online and on trip advisor and most certainly lived up to the hype. Awesome!!
T. E.
First I thought the portions are pretty small, but in the end I was fed up well for a reasonable price. Staff was nice and the tapas really great.
Only negative point is, that it was a bit noisy in the restaurant and you don't have too much room to move.
C. C.
Fantastic food, really tasty and great service
C. H.
Take home meal from one of the voucher sites. Great food, fresh, reheated really well and tons of it. Makes a great treat during lockdown.
W. M.
Looking for a curry dinner and this one was nearby and well rated. The curries ranged from decent to quite mild in flavour. The tandoori (in this case prawns) suffered from being well overcooked and losing their moisture.
The meal was ok but I didn't feel enamoured.
M. F.
What a great place, sort of smaller portions tapas style Indian food. Three or four dishes for two, some classics and some surprises. Loved the chilli king prawns. If it looks full there's a downstairs. Thoroughly recommended. I'll be back....... as someone said.
D. M.
Awesome, don't be fooled in to thinking the dishes will be small because it's tapas, won't need to order as much as you think. Good atmosphere, great food, good price
R. M.
Had great service, friendly staff, good food. The three things that you must have at a restaurant. The food was very tasty, spiced how we requested. The naan was different that what we are used to but still very good. Great service!
A. C.
Really good food, but seems to be always busy, which compromises the speed of the service.
The food is very spicy and when we asked for a mild version they said it was okay but brought the normal one to the table.
The portions are not very generous, but the food is good.
E. T.
Amazing food, great selection and reasonable prices! Yum!
C. G.
A tapas style Indian restaurant... what a great concept. The food is excellent and well worth a visit. The service was great and very helpful if you didn't know what some thing on the menu was. I can't wait to go back.
t. b.
Always a pleasure to get a meal here.
A nice range of dishes wich are extremely tasty!
A. D.
Delicious food and great service when we last visited in May - back v soon!
L. C.
I could not have imagined finding such excellent food stumbling up the streets of Edinburgh, but the aromas emanating from Mother India on a warm summer evening were so enchanting, my crowd and I succumbed to the draw and were thoroughly satisfied. The tapas style was wonderful to share all the diverse tastes among the table, and the chai was spot on.
h. r.
This has been one of the best Indian restaurant so far in uk , i have never had any restaurant bringing the food so fast while being so busy and it was fresh and full of flavour.
D. D.
Absolutely fantastic food, the best Indian in Edinburgh. The fish pakora were just amazing. Service was great too.
V. D.
Truly authentic indian restaurant. Was visiting Edinburgh with family and we went there with less expectations. What came out was a surprise. Food is very authentic indian food. Mutton biryani, railways lamb and chicken on the bone karahi were remarkable. Only thing to remember is it is tapas style so dont expect quantity to be bigger, even the biryanis. They are all small pots. Order 3 or 4 curries for 2 people otherwise it wont be enough for a hungry stomach. Chai was the one of the best one i had in UK after my home. Cant stop going there again.

We had not booked, but were able to have a table for an hour which was plenty of time for a main meal. Which we both enjoyed due to the delicious flavours, that the ingredients were cooked just right, and the food was hot..good friendly service..
A. S.
An old restaurant, well maintained, serves good Indian food. They have quite a good spread but I couldn't spot much Indians eating there but saw a lot of English/Europeans. Overall a good restaurant right next to the high lands main road.
W. L.
As good as any Indian food I've ever had! Thanks, Anthony Bourdain.
D. B.
After 5 years of performing on the fringe the best thing I have ever done in Edinburgh is eat here. Delicious food but the comedy awards are fixed by the big management companies. 5 stars would eat again
J. D.
Been here a few times and it was always lovely, but this time it was quite disapointing. Dont know if they have changed chefs or what but the chicken curry sauce was like thin watery soup. Maybe it was due to the time we visited as was during Edinburgh Festival. Not up to usual standards. 😔
j. r.
Great food with wonderful social distancing practices. The Chaat was an absolute favourite and the dosa was delicious. Would also highly recommend the monk fish.
i. V.
Staff were lovely, atmosphere was nice, but the food was ok. The garlic pitta was amazing but the curry was average. Seeing the reviews I was expecting exceptional an it just wasn't.
R. J.
Fast service, excellent food. Will definitely be back next time I'm in edinburgh.
t.
Lots of sample dishes which was interesting. Not enough actual curry dishes they felt like mainly sides or starters. However all cooked really well and gave me an opportunity to try something's I normally wouldn't
S. G.
One of the not-so-well hidden gems in the city, Mother India combines the rich flavours of the Indian food with the convenience of the tapas style platters. You can easily share up to 6 tapas with a friend, along with a couple of naans, and, based on my experience, you will keep asking for more. When we go there we use to order 2 or 3 of our favourite platters and the for the rest we try new platters, picking almost randomly from the menu. I have never been disappointed following this strategy.
E. L.
Very good food. Dinner is only tapas based but it will give you a chance to try different flavours. Very good service, nice atmosphere, not too quiet, not too noisy, average prices.
J. F.
Never fails to impress. The food is high quality, traditional and tasty. Four dishes usually plenty. The dal is delicious! And the service is always very friendly and attentive.
G. H.
Great food. We visited as a group of 6 and asked the waiter to bring us a mixture of different food for us to share. The food was fantastic - exactly what we were after. It worked out to be ~£25 per head all in - starters, mains and all drinks.
J. F.
We go to Mother India for every given special occasion and even get the odd takeouts. Lovely flavours and great service. The place is definitely well known so reservation is alwahs key. The veggie dishes are great and the peshwari naan is deliciously moreish!
P. S.
Super food,quick service Highly recommended.
D. C. (.
Great Indian restaurant with crazy queues outside during the festival. It feels a little on the expensive side for Edinburgh (and this from a London native), but it's worth it for the range and general quality of the food.
n. m.
Really friendly service and so kind staff. At the same time food are delicious and tasty. Every week I used to try different different meals, up to now all of them nice.
C. L.
Really happy with the food, the service,.. Thanks a lot!
T. P.
An amazing first experience at Mother India's Cafe. Flavours of the food still churning inside our palate. Would totally recommend this restaurant for authentic Indian cuisine.
S. C.
One of my favourite Indian places in Edinburgh. Food is delicious and service is without a fault. I cannot praise their Dal Makhni enough.
A. R.
Conveniently located around the central university area this restaurant is the perfect place for a nice meal if you're craving a good Indian dish. A bit more up-market than the standard Indian restaurants you can find near-by, but definitely worth the extra money if you want to treat yourself.
L. M.
I love Mother India, along with everyone else in the city. Great for groups to share Indian tapas food and washed down with an indian beer, what could be better. I'd suggest booking as it's very popular and in festival time it can be waiting times of upto an hour! But so worth it!
G. D.
Absolutely delicious. Really busy evening during the Fringe, staff were wonderful and efficient. Food was delicious. Ordered too much and have just eaten the remainder for breakfast. Satiated beyond belief.
P. M. (.
Genuine Inian style food in really nice environment. Pleasant staff.
J. L.
Pros: Rice was great
Cons: Lamb and chicken were both too salty. Calling the food 'tapas' style is no excuse to serve portion sizes that are not worth the price.
H. L.
Food was great. Waiting staff were very attentive. Would definitely recommend.
R. C.
Busy restaurant! Did not have a reservation, but Waited in waiting area for a few minutes then was seated. Delicious food!!! Food came out very fast, good service! Even the ice cream for dessert was very cold and yummy!
D. B.
Outstanding Indian Tapas food. A great selection on offer and the staff are friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend booking in advance (even for a small table) as it gets very busy very quick.
m. c.
It's a tappas style approach to curry house cooking. Don't be put off by the rather uninspiring menu. You may have tried all these dishes before, but you haven't had them here. I went as one of a party of four. We had a karahi chicken, a mutter keema, two off-the-bone lamb dishes, a fish kebeb dish and a couple of veg numbers. Two plates each, basically. With this were two chapattis and two portions of rice. With three beers this came to around £60. The lamb was melt-in-the mouth tender and the 8 dishes provided us with sufficiently different eating experiences to provoke conversation and stimulate the senses. We were all pretty ravenous to begin with and there was plenty to satisfy us all. The mutter keema deserves special mention for really celebrating this simple truck-stop favourite and making it fit for a king. The tappas -sized servings and communal style of eating are a good way of bringing a fresh face to these national favourites. Make sure to book. It's popular.
T. D.
Been there twice, almost year apart, service and food had been excellent. Recommended. Considering the quality of average Indian-food or "curry" in UK, this restaurant was a pleasant surprise.
D. T.
Great vegan options on the menu. We had no reservation but the staff managed the queue well and we were seated after a short wait. Great good value food.
T. D.
One of the best places in Edinburgh for Indian food. Tapas style, so you get to try lots of different dishes. Book ahead if you're in a group.
C. C.
I have to say the chili chicken here is about the best thing I've had in Edinburgh. So much flavour it blew my mind. I can't recommend Mother India's Cafe enough!
D. C.
Good food. Still I would prefer a better variety of dishes and better beer. The menu needs to be improved, not really friendly for tourist or those who don't know Indian cuisine.
D. B.
Superb choice and freshly cooked Indian food served in affordable tapas portions giving the opportunity to try a few dishes. The chilli king prawns, smoked haddock and chicken achari were particular highlights.
S. E.
Great service, and amazing food the chilli garlic chicken, chicken saag and king prawn curry was Absolutely delicious, best Indian in Edinburgh hands down.
E. C.
Absolutely brilliant food, really fresh ingredients and interesting surprising flavours. The tapas style small dishes mean that you can get a real selection of food even with just two people.
c. a.
Tapas size portions with amazing flavours....would definitely recommend the place, but if you're a big water go for 3 or 4 dishes.....minimum!
A. C.
2nd time to Mother India's. The food is as good as your Dadi's- some of the best I've had.
The menu is served tappas style: you get small plates to share. Three orders is enough for two people once you throw in pitta (naan) and some basmati.
A bite at Mother India's and a pint next door at the Royal Oak might be the perfect evening.
J. G.
Meal was okay... unfortunately the lamb was very chewy. The waiter would interrupt the table to take away our dishes more than what was necessary. Overall, this branch of MIC doesn’t come close to Glasgow’s.
S. W.
Delicious Indian food in a restaurant with three dining rooms, two at ground level and a more intimate one in the sub basement. Great veg dishes. Attentive and friendly staff
D. M.
Good service , nice food . Reasonable price
F. M.
Perfect to try many Indian dishes, with their famous tapas style menu.
Sometimes it is too crowded and wait can be long. Food is delicious and staff helpful.
F. A.
A must visit for such amazing food and wonderful staff... arrive early to book your table as during the festival it took around an hour to get the table but the good side of it is that you could roam around the old town with plenty things to see and return back for the booked time.... worths the waiting for the fantastic food.
R. M.
Lovely, would definitely recommend!
J. S.
Decent Indian food at reasonable prices. Not sure it warrants the accolade of top Indian restaurant in Edinburgh but it it still quite good. The waiting staff were also pleasant, so would visit again.
G. W.
Great meal speedy service. Garlic chilli chicken was excellent. Food was delicious, piping hot and just the right amount of spice heat.
S. C.
Fab Indian food. Small plates, a great selection of dishes and good prices. Reassuringly busy at lunchtime. Recommended for Indian food fans (like us).
T. C.
Different concept on a curry. Liked it and food was good - could do with a bit more chili in some of the dishes, but that's personal taste. Book a table otherwise you might not get in
R. D.
There are very few good indian restaurants in Edinburgh and I would put Mother India toward the top of my list of favourites. Serves indian food in a tapas style so gives you the opportunity to try out things that you may not usually go for. Very enjoyable evenings had in here and highly recommended.
M. S.
Excellent Indian restaurant serving "tapas-style" smaller sharing dishes. Service is usually good but can feel abrupt when busy, especially during the festival.
R. B.
Very tasty Indian tapas style meal. Note that the pitta on the menu is actually naan (which is confusing when there is a naan on the specials! Docked 1 star because this confusion and also because of a very irritating waiter. Would definitely go back though.
A. A.
Unexpectedly Awesome Indian food!!
T. R.
Tasty dishes of a descent size, 2 dishes +rice or bread is enough. Good simple service and not too long to wait without a booking.
Will go back.
H. D.
Awesome food. Always crowded. Food's freshly prepared. Owner's quite hospitable. Great place for an Indian food dinner date
K. B.
Indian tapas--what an amazing concept. We have been here twice now and have found delicious food to eat, good wine to drink and all at a very affordable price. I highly recommend this place.
N. F.
Really enjoyed this meal, Indian tapas, recommend 3-4 for two people sharing and a rice/pitta (the pitta is actually naan, just called pitta on the menu!). Good atmosphere and food ready really quickly!
D.
Absolutely delicious authentic dishes. The service was quick and pleasant. We will definitely come back for more!
M. M.
Among the best Indian in Edinburgh. Dishes are meant to be shared tapas style. Frequently very busy, even during the week. Booking is essential if you have a group.
M. M.
Great selection and approach to offering a wide range of dishes. Quick service. Staff friendly. Good effort with COVID19 sanitation prevention measures.
R. B.
Nice place for a family dinner. Shared plated make it easy to experience Indian food. 4/5 because a bit too spicy for some of the people.
B. V.
Best meal I have had since I moved to Scotland! amazing!
Y. H.
Great food and great service! Will definitely visit again.
A. K.
One of the best of its kind in town. Make sure to sample a range of dishes, as the menu does change depending on availability. Lassies and naan breads are creamy and doughy, respectively.
T. O.
Packed with people. Great food. Love the atmosphere and good service. Will come back again! (BTW the lamb railway curry was excellent - ordered 2X)
S. S.
The place has the perfect portion size for trying out 3-4 dishes. Tastes very authentic and reasonably priced.
E. G.
Delicious food, friendly and efficient service, relaxed ambiance and very clean, welcoming decor with some really beautiful black and white photos especially of Edinburgh.
J. S. A.
Absolutely delicious food fantastic cutsomer service and brilliant atmosphere. No complaints what so ever none. Would reccomend to anyone.
S. S.
Amazing food for amazing price!
M. R.
Tapas to share are a great idea. Food is so good, that even the queues and related waiting times should not keep you from trying it. We will go there again tomorrow.
R. v. W.
Very good Indian Restaurant. Loved their food. Very quick service by the way. Next time I visit Edinburgh again I'll definitely visit you again.
M. F.
Great atmosphere, really nice staff and amazing indian food!
I would presume it‘s good to book a table in advance, we certainly did.
