Reviews of Passage To India
S. B.
Great Indian superb choice all our curries and accompanying dishes were fantastic the girl waitress was fantastic and good choice of beverages overall and the six of us agreed probably the nicest curries we have tasted would highly recommend and will be back.
B. R.
Struggled to find a good Indian restaurant in Edinburgh that wasn't "contemporary" or offered "fusion" cooking or even served alcohol unless you took your drinks, after being recommended this restaurant by our hotel owner we were not disappointed! Great food in nice clean surroundings ! Excellent!!
T. K.
Pleasant experience for a family meal. We were seated quickly and our drinks and order were taken as soon as we were ready. Everything tasted amazingly good! We will have to return.
C. C.
Very kind and caring staff. The food was delicious, we ordered vegetables pakora, chicken pasanda and lamb biryani. Definitely a place to try if you're visiting Edinburgh.
P. D.
1st visit to this traditional curry house for the Livi Hibs Real Ale Society and these 4 beer soaked fellows enjoyed the spiced delights on offer.
After beers in Robbie's & The Windsor we were ready for a Judy Murray.
Huge poppadoms, tasty nans & curries with more kick and fire than the lack lustre Hibs attack, they were all eaten with great enthusiasm.
LHRAS will return.

Excellent restaurant. Food was outstanding and staff are very friendly. Highly recommended 👌 Absolutely first class.

Best Gajar Ka halwa I ever had. The Madras chicken curry was yummy. Authentic Indian restaurant. Must give a try. 5/5
H. S.
Was supposed to walk down to the oldest Indian restaurant in Scotland but saw this on the way there and decided to give it a try. Staff were nice and friendly. Ordered lassi which was very rich and nice, briyani and chicken balti plus garlic naan for mains. Briyani had a big portion of rice but little chicken in it but was okay. The chicken balti was very good, I loved it. Naan was okay nothing special.

I was in Edinburgh on holidays and found this place by luck - someone had recommended another Indian restaurant around the corner, but their kitchen closes way too early and were just checking what else was around there. Well, lucky us! I live in London, where we have Asian restaurants in every corner, but this was the best Indian food I've ever had. Lovely staff too. Strongly recommend :)
W. L.
Best Indian food we had in Edinburgh during my semester here. Even better than Mother India. Thankful for the recommendation from our friends in Leith!
V. S.
Amazing restaurant with best food and great service.

The service was great and staff were friendly and helpful. Our food was flavorful and delicious.
K. P.
Service was great. Food delicious, very enjoyable. Visiting Edinburgh, picked this at random and glad we did. Its near the road works around John Lewis opposite side of the road to the theatre.
D. M.
Simply the best!
We are here in Edinburgh for the weekend and were lucky enough to come across Passage to India.
At home we have an Indian meal most weekends so we regard ourselves as knowing a bit about Indian cuisine.
This was probably the best Indian meal we have ever had.
Give it a try you won’t be disappointed.
S.
Actually I don't have words to express the taste of the food ..whole food carry A+ rating. But the daal makhni is great in taste ...specially thanks to Barsha who take care the basic requirement of the customer .. after Punjab I got taste here ..
Keep it up ..

Authentic Indian place in city Center
Although we saw only one staff member managing the show at 7 pm on a Wednesday evening - he was doing very well! Very courteous and good at communication with the customers.
Veg Biryani and chana masala were awesome
Complimentary chutneys Raita and curry with the biryani just like in India
Decor is also modern well lit and spacious
A.
Good sized portions, a little expensive but with the 10% discount it is very reasonable. Very delicious and good quality lamb curry with a lot of spices. The poppadom is also very good, very crispy and thin. The restaurant also gave me a free lemonade whilst I was waiting for my takeaway, so all in all a very good experience. The waitress is also very polite and the shop very modern and clean.
P. B.
Good food and amazing staff. They were my saviours for the 2 months I was in Edinburgh in 2019. I felt well fed because of them. Being a vegetarian, I mostly had Bhindi Bhaji, Alloo Jeera, Raita, Jeera Rice and Daal Tarka...Strongly recommend The Passage to India for anyone who is looking for proper Indian taste.
A. L.
Excellent Indian food. The place really opens a passage to India 😊 Try out the masala chai, its really good
J.
Had chicken tikka with plain rice last week. Needless to say, this is one of the best indian restaurant in Edinburgh. The food has adequate quantity and the quality, presentation and taste were exceptional.
K. S.
Found this gem on a recent trip to Edinburgh & it didn’t disappoint. Food was flavoursome & ambience was perfect! Definitely Recommend.
A. Y. B.
Best Dal Makhani in Scotland. Closest resemblence to North Indian Restaurant food. This review comes after eating at a number of Indian restaurants in Scotland over 10 days.
I. H.
The food was plentiful and delicious. Recommended
J. B.
Fantastic service and food – one of the best Indian in the UK.
M. H.
Despite the low key appearance this is one of the best curry houses in edinburgh
r. d.
This restaurant was just opposite our hotel and thought would give it a try ( though it looks a bit glim from the outside ) its a crown in the Indian food restaurants' amazing food brilliant service went back for more the next day highly recommended .
C. D.
Delicious butter chicken and great service - if we ever return to Edinburgh we will be revisiting!
R. H.
Both the food and service were great. Do not be misled by the small appearance of the restaurant from the outside, this place is huge.
I had a North Indian Garlic chicken dish, consisting mainly of garlic 'obviously' spinach and ginger. The flavours were both fresh and immense. I travel frequently here to Edinburgh and have eaten in many Indian restaurants and I can honestly say that this is the best yet.
I'll be back. Thanks very much.
D. N.
The food was absolutely terrific. The atmosphere was nice, quiet and cozy. But the service was horrible. We were seated immediately, but it took almost fifteen minutes before someone came to take our drink order. Then they never brought our drinks, I had to ask for them. They never came back to see if we needed anything. After waiting a very long time, I had to ask for our check...three times! I could forgive all of this if the place was crowded, but there were only a handful of customers in the restaurant. The workers just seemed to disappear for long periods of time. They really need to step up their service or they'll be out of business soon.
p.
Omg! Guys please order the karahi prawns and the chicken jalfrezi. You are going to love it. Chicken jalfrezi is a little bit spicy, but karahi is almost not spicy. The flavour and the texture you are going to nurture your soul while your passing away from culinary pleasure. 1000 stars!❤
T. B.
Had take-out here: Delicious. Great portion sizes, but also high-quality. Large chunks of lamb, and chicken, fragrant sauces with multiple distinct spice flavours. Delicious! (quick and fairly priced as well. The restaurant is much larger than it looks - going well back with a large dining hall. Much nicer food than a nearby popular neighbour who shall remain nameless.
A.
Very nice food although I'd say it's a bit on the pricey side. Main dishes are all around £9-13 each, about £3 for rice etc and then £4.25 for a pint of draught beer. So not exactly bargain basement prices but to be fair the food is super good. I had a mixed vegetable curry which was delicious.
The restaurant itself is very clean and has reasonably nice decor. Worth checking out.
J. G.
Awesome and authentic Indian taste. Suitable for both vegetarian and non vegetarian.
Place dont look big from outside but they have ample seating inside.
Friendly staff and owner. Food comes with pinch of sense of humor from owner.
Cant wait to try other dishes on menu.
Recommended dishes: North Indian chill garlic lamb gravy, Green chicken gravy and King prawns biryani.
V. B.
Indeed authentic Indian food. On a two week trip to Edinburgh, I was pleasantly surprised to find such good Indian food (despite someone already putting the expectations sky high). Everything we ordered was amazing, but Dal Makhni wins hands down. Their Bukhara version would easily put 90-95% of restaurants in India to shame. Go for this place if you want to eat good Indian food.
S. W.
Food was nice and portion size was good.
C. Z.
great food. the restaurant is a little under-staffed, so it may take a while to get your food. but I do think it is worth it. very authentic taste. I tried lamb biryani. And i could definitely taste the mint from the food (Many indian restaurant only put mint leaves on the dish for presentation). This really surprised me. Just make sure you have enough time..not recommend if you are in hurry...
H. 5.
Very nice place, the food is amazing. Very good staff, I work on Deliveroo and they always give me discounts and stuff I really appreciate them.
K. S.
Ive been to Passage to India twice now and both times the food has been delicious and the service excellent. They are very welcoming. Despite being in a busy location it is quiet inside and has a lovely peaceful ambience. I'll be taking my friends there so they can share in the experience. This restaurant is a find.
H. A.
The best Indian restaurant in Edinburgh. Delicious food, nice service and clean place 👌
From UAE 🇦🇪
S. B.
Fab meal lovely restaurant and great service. Took my mum to playhouse on Friday and had dinner here. Mum's birthday and the staff put candles in her dessert and we all sang to her. Very resonable too 3 of us had 2 courses and a few drinks each and it was under 100.
O. M.
Incredible food, the most authentic Indian cuisine you will ever taste, beats most places in London! Chundi was a great waiter and provided excellent service. Highly recommend! The Saag Paneer is fantastic 👌🏽🔥
S. B.
Delicious food, wonderful restaurant with good atmosphere. Service is excellent and the prices are sensible.
N. B.
Food was ok, portion sizes were not big. We had chicken and veg pakora to start. Was unusual as the veg in it was in strips. Butter chicken was very sweet and the madras was ok. Service was ok staff were friendly. On the food alone wouldn't rush back
D. R.
Food and service excellent. Staff very helpful, one of the best Indian meals we have had, and very reasonably priced.
S. M.
Lovely meal. Deliciously crispy pakora and onion bhaji starters, followed by an incredibly tasty tandoori Chicken Tikka, big enough for my wife and I to share! Not quite enough delicious sauce for either course though, in hindsight.
m. s.
We went for the dinner and food was really excellent and at par with good restaurants in India. Dal Makhni was delicious and just like the way it is meant to be. We also had Channa Masala, Mushrooms and Veg Biryani which was again fabulous. Recommend this place to all those who are looking for authentic Indian taste.
R. P.
Amazing food, so so so tasty, both my fiance and I adored this place. It was really well priced and every single staff member was absolutely charming. Can't wait to go back!
m.
Food was good but the service lets it down. One waiter appeared to have little knowledge of the job and even simpke thinfs suchnas taking the food order or getting the bill was met with 'my collegue needs to do that' followed by his swift departure meaning you had to ask someone ekse gor tye bill.
No coffee or dessert were offered after finishing the mains so I can only suspect they do neither
M. S.
Best restaurant for Indians in Edinburgh. Homely taste food provided. We ordered paneer butter masala, nan and pulao. The chef cooked the food, very indian. Had a very good experience. Will recommend people going to Edinburgh, must visit this restaurant for authentic Indian taste.
A. C.
The food was very good and the service was also adequate. The main downside of this restaurant was that the food took a very long time to arrive, granted I was with a very large group of people. If you go here you will definitely get food that you will enjoy.
P. J.
The owner went out of his way to make us feel welcome, even when one of our party did not eat their food so bought fish and chips and was able to eat it with the rest of the party. Absolutely excellent. As was the food.
S. B.
Food was good however service was terrible. Firstly they lost our reservation, then it took us 20 minutes to get served (including getting a drink) and that was only because we had to ask someone. Other couples around us had the same dilemma. One couple left as they had a show to go to- bit useless having a pre theatre offer on but not being served quick enough to be able to go see it! Starter took about 30 minutes and we had to ask for our mains to come out ASAP as we were too running out of time. I’ve been here before with no issues but perhaps on a busy Saturday night they should consider hiring more staff or the waiter needs to remember people are waiting to be served!
S. A.
Amazing indian food in Edinburgh! Not only were we surprised to find indian vegetarian good available in Edinburgh but it was one of the best meals we have ever had!
L. M.
We were walking past and felt really hungry. We saw a sign that said 'any starter, main and rice/naan for £10 so went in.'
I was surprised at how big it was inside. Wasn't very busy but was a weeknight. 'Any' starter isn't quite true. We were each brought a selection of starters, mine vegi, his meat. So far, so good. We ordered our mains, which were spicy and more than enough to finish. I'd recommend, as it's great for the location and price. We'll be back I'm sure.
S. B.
Stag of ten from Midlands Sat 8th July 2017. Best meal at a Indian restaurant we have ever had. Punjabi Methi Ghost, Kerala Fish Curry both top dishes both full off flavour. Would recommend to everyone for both food and service we were offered out off this world. Thank you for making our night.
S. A.
Me and a colleague dined here on business last week. I'd been let down by the couple of previous Indian restaurants I had previously visited, therefore was in need of a "Good Indian". It has now come to my attention that If I'm going to be guaranteed this, I'll have to make more regular trips to Edinburgh. Good work guys and don't let your chef go!!!!!!
B. N.
Amazing curry house, or extremely authentic unlike the others nearby. I may not look like much from the outside but it is well worth going in. Ask to speak to the owner and discuss your tastes with him and let him guide you through the fantastic menu
N. M.
Decent food near the playhouse for a pre-gig curry. Good service, good food.
g. s.
Excellent Food and service and even my kids enjoyed the Food.
This Indian restaurant was suggested to us by Steve while we were browsing at Royal Mile. I have tried various Indian restaurants in UK and love to eat the food at an Indian restaurant again when the food tastes close to the original i.e. India. I would rate it 9 on a scale of 10 as genuine taste close to what you get in India. But one thing you have ask before ordering is just ask the manager that you want it to taste like India or same as Punjabi style back home and I was totally obliged.
We ordered chicken biryani, Butter chicken, Paneer Makhani , Dal Bukhara(Makhani) with Butter naans which were not even on the menu.
We just walked in no appointment and Were welcomed by the staff who were very friendly.
If I lived in Edinburgh then Passage to India would have been my to go Indian Restaurant. People of Edinburg are lucky to have such an amazing restaurant locally whose food tastes close to same as we get in India.
Genuinely Authentic Indian food outside India.
I thank Steve for suggesting this restaurant.

Excellent Indian food in Edinburgh! Real authentic Indian food. Daal tarka, parathas, jeera aloo & chicken tikkas. Very good service & very polite staff.
A must for Indian food lovers.
P. S.
Passage did a fantastic job of feeding at least 50 guys this evening with a good choice of curries. Five stars and three cheers! The cobra lager was deliciously cool.
m. r.
Best india food in UK. I have been with my family to Edinburgh and not very sure where we end up having indian food. We went to this place and believe me it is one of the best place I have ever been. very very good and warm staff. food is excellent. must try dal makni.
H.
Fantastic meal, great staff, look forward to coming back. Only had a basic tikka masala, but very tasty and fresh. Thank you.
A. M.

Spicy dishes taste like sweet and sour.

If you look for a nice place to eat an excellent food, you'll find it in Passage to India.
I recommend lamb with spinach. It is also worth to try a dessert there!
N. K.
food was fantastic when it came, late service, in store also ordered to collect and had to wait an additional 40 minutes for collection, was told to call 30 minutes to give notice, that were coming to collect but still had to wait 40 minutes. no parking makes it even harder.
A. b.
This is the best Indian restaurant in the area. All of our meals were lovely, I recommend the saag aloo, delicious! Also the staff were very nice and atentive.
G. S.
Possibly the best curry I've ever had. Great service. Unreal! 🥘
m. w.
Good Food. No sauces served on this occasion which we found odd. Also ordered coffees and asked again 15minutes later. A further 10mins elapsed before we were told the coffee machine was broken.
J. L.
Nice meal but said we should have booked and told them that we had a Taste card to get a discount when we pointed out that nowhere on their web site does it say that they finally reduced the bill seemed like they were trying it on!
p. v.
Nice indian place. Good food but a bit on the expensive side. Great service in a good location. There is a tesco nearby and tram station is just a 2 min walk.
N. S.
This restaurant is under new management and is gr8. Absolutely love this restaurant. Never got disappointed. My Haggis Samosa was perfect. Good Service & friendly staff.
100% recommend .

R. G.
Amazing environment and great service. Food was spicy seasoned very well.Overall great.
D. M.
Really delicious! Full of fresh ingredients & flavour. Perfect naan bread too.
m. c.
Food was good ..not a typical desi food but worth the price ..
J. M.
Highly recommend, great service and value for money straight across the street from the Edinburgh Playhouse.
R. C.
Lovely food. Good vegetarian variety. Try the samosas, the paneer dishes. Simply outstanding. Great going
a. a.
we saw the menu in the window which also has signs saying halal, we saw the haggis samosas and steak on the menu so we had to try it but when ordering we were informed that those dishes were not halal, we were disappointed as that was the main reason that we actually went in, also they shouldn't actually be advertising as halal if everything isn't halal as this is misleading, we wouldnt even have gone in otherwise, anyway we ordered other dishes instead, everything was lovely apart from the spicy wings which had a very bitter lemon taste and the side salad which came with curry and rice which also tasted really bitter and lemony.
K. H.
Great value for money and attentive service keeps me coming back here whenever in the mood for a curry. Haven't had anything less than perfect whenever I've been.
v. m.
One of the best Indian food I had in Edinburgh. Absolutely authentic indian👍. And the staff is very friendly.

A. M.
Lovely curry house fantastic food and service, not cheap but you get what you pay for. I would recommend this place for all curry lovers.many thanks to Habib from Bradford xxxx
A. G.
Great food and consistency too as we have ordered a few times and loved our food each time!!
Z. F.
Quiet cheap for the location and quality, delicious curries and Naans. Be careful with the spice level though, since even level 2 is pretty hot
R. N.
Great takeout: amazing flavors, great portion sizes and good value. Be aware though that "mild" is still a bit spicy.
P. B.
Nice Ambiance. Great Service with excellent food :) You can expect authentic Indian taste.

(Translated) All very rich, food with a lot of flavor, at its point, very elaborate and carrot dessert as the icing that crowns the meal, very well priced

Todo muy rico, comida con mucho sabor,en su punto, muy elaborado y postre de zanahorias como la guinda que corona la comida, muy bien de precio

(Translated) Recommended and very tasty and original Indian! However, you should bring some time if you fancy the dishes with steamed meat - it is better to arrive at the Playhouse at least 90 minutes before the performance begins;)
(Original)

(Translated) 🥰 Oida 🥰 I found something good there.
An Indian who really dares to cook spicy. The restaurant is great compared to the Play House and is from the outside rather a bit inconspicuous. Inside, however, the Indian hospitality comes in full. Yes, I found an eye-opener here. Yes, I like to come here again and forgive with joy all the stars I have. Thank you to the team again 😘

Danke ans Team gerne wieder 😘
