Reviews of The Basement

9 of us went for a staff lunch (we hadn't booked) and they were really accommodating and gave us a section to ourselves. They do amazing Mexican food, I ordered the pulled pork quesadilla special and it was perfect. They are also dog friendly
H. M.
Really nice Mexican food - some really interesting dishes like the sprout and almond tacos and the goats cheese quesadillas. Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere. Champagne a bit pricey but what can you do eh.
E. J.
Very nice place, service, outstanding food and dog friendly. We went for brunch and enjoyed a lot. We will be back
M. J.
This is a pretty nice place! The thing that boosts my review is definitely the food, by far some of the most delicious I've had in a while! The drinks were really great too, I had a delicious margarita, and me and my friend both agreed that the choices on the menu were great and definitely worth the journey into the city!
The only things that make this a 4 instead of a 5 star review are that it felt a bit cramped, given that covid is still a thing the tables (while they were separated by plastic shields) were quite close together and the "basement" situation meant that there were no windows to open which left it feeling a little claustrophobic, especially as it was a warm evening.
Another thing was that the music was so loud I could barely have a normal conversation with my friend without shouting a little which over dinner isn't exactly ideal! I guess it depends on whether or not you mind a little background noise, but I personally found it too loud! With the music and then everyone having to raise their voice to be heard it was sort of like having dinner in a busy club!
Overall I'd say it's worth a visit for the food and cocktails, but be warned if you are still hesitant about covid, and maybe try to go when it's a bit quieter!

Fantastic. Although the prices may look a little steep, the quality and quantity of the food served makes it well worth it. It's hard to go wrong with a margarita, but these were especially good. Speedy and witty service. Funky decor. The basement is a must try for anyone into Mexican food or tequila cocktails.

Very very nice food, good portions, great staff, very good drinks menu as well, the cocktails are class. Highly recommended but get a side of chips they are 👌

Absolutely fantastic food and staff were attentive to all our needs.
Service was really fast
Food full of flavor and quality was spot on
Certainly recommend this place 👌

Really cool place - great vibe, good food and nice outdoor area too. The mushroom quesadillas were bangin! Helpful and attentive staff too. Margaritas looked good... shame I was here essay-writing... hasta la próxima!
I. C.
Lovely atmosphere and great food. The servers were also very nice. The frozen passion fruit margarita was delicious and came in the cutest cactus glass

Stumbled across this restaurant whilst on an over night stay in Edinburgh. Great vibe! Staff really friendly and helpful. Food lovely and very reasonably priced. Would highly recommend!

Had a nice time at The Basement and will return the next time we come back to Edinburgh.
We came out of The Playhouse and were going to go to Cosmos, but lucky for us, they were out the door. Looked on maps and decided to go here.
We were not disappointed. The only negative was the menu has very feint small writing and I could not read the menu as it merged in to the colour of the background colour of the menu, which was grey on greyish background. It was dark outside and the print was illegible to me. Having said that I downloaded the menu on to my phone and I could see it very easily that way, but that was black on white background
We went with the pimentos de padron from the "For The Table" section of the menu, which was roasted whole pimento peppers in a smoked sea salt dressing. They were really tasty.
We wanted tacos and were advised to have 3 plates between the 2 of us. We went for the taco pescado, which was Battered haddock, jalapeno tartare sauce, coriander and fresh lime. They were really nice. Next we chose beef shin tacos, 12 hour marinated garlic and chipotle beef shin, sour cream, spring onion and salsa verde. They were very tender with a slight kick and very tasty. But the best was our third choice, which was the tempura broccoli tacos, Pecan salsa, chipotle honey and lime. They were really superb. You get 2 of each kind and they are quite filling. We took 2 sides, 1 x sweet potato fries and 1 x hand cut fries and they were both really tasty. Both were salted, which I wish we'd known about, but they were not over salted to be fair. with 2 pints of Heineken and a diet code and a day dream cocktail it came to £53 which we thought was very reasonable for the quality and volume. The staff were really friendly and attentive and were willing to advise what they considered to be a good choice.

Who the heck goes to Edinburgh for Mexican food? We do. Why? Because it's our favourite cuisine and The Basement absolutely KILLED IT. Not a Mexican in sight but the guac was made to order table-side, the portions were generous but not over the top, and our Margaritas were spot on.
If I had one gripe it was simply that extra cheese cost a few pennies but our waiter was on point, friendly and helpful. You could, however, ask for as much salsa as you wanted at no extra charge.
The Basement claim to have one of the largest selections of tequila in the UK. I can't verify that claim but they sure had a lot of it locked up in the back.
K. W.
Fantastic food an drinks. Very friendly service. Would definitely come here again and again.
B. D.
Nice mexican food and cocktails. I recommend the frozen margarita. Good music
A. D.
Really good food! Service was lovely and the drinks are delicious. Everything was reasonably priced. I will definitely be going back to try the rest of the menu.
P. B.
Great place for a beverage to start an Edinburgh day session, we’re often first in bang on opening. Friendly staff and a relaxed vibe about the joint.
Not tried the food but the drink selection is always extensive.
Dog friendly too, we love this gaff.
S. H.
Nice atmosphere in the restaurant and both the food and drinks were nice. I would say it was overpriced for what you get, in comparison to other good quality Mexicans nearby.
M. P.
Very good! Next time when people ask me for a good mexican restaurant in Edinburgh, this will be on the list. The wacamole is real, I had the flutes... oogh so good!. They have agreat selection of draft beers, is nicely decorsted
N.
We were starving, we were thirsty. They feed us great food and gave us to drink.
Good atmosphere, great staff I fully recommend.
C. L.
Really tasty tacos and they make a good margarita even if it is a little small. I got the Birria tacos and the portion size was enough for me but maybe not for others with bigger appetites. My boyfriend had the pulled pork tacos and didn’t think it was enough. Great food but maybe a little pricey for the amount you get. Also the added service charge on the receipt at the end was a surprise as I prefer to decide myself rather than it being added on automatically. Still enjoyed my time at the basement even if it was a little pricey.
S. C.
Service was really slow. Food was pretty decent. Could not taste the Mexican though maybe it’s not as spicy. Worth a visit for sure though.
O. L.
Food is delicious, atmosphere is perfect and the staff are amazing. The staff were so helpful when I wanted to make my partners birthday special. They let me bring a cake and they stored it for us and DIDN'T sing as per my request. We got a private booth and it was everything we wanted! Thank you again!
T. M.
The food was amazing here, so was the beer and tequila! Would highly recommend if you've got friends visiting or just fancy some quality Mexican food.
C. N.
Really impressed by the effort they had made to make the restaurant 'covid safe'. It still had a lovely cosy feel and a fun atmosphere. Margaritas were also delicious! They deserve to be as busy as they are.
N. W.
Last minute find, but definitely a great one. Everything was amazing from the staff, down to the food and drinks selection. Good portion sizes and very reasonably priced. We will be returning when we come back up to Edinburgh. Recommend trying one of the tequilas!
E. H.
This place is a gem as far as I'm concerned! The best Mexican food I have tasted ins Scotland so far! I went for brunch right as they opened at 11am. The guacamole made fresh at the table was a delight. I got the fish tacos and pork tostadas and both were just perfectly cooked. Plenty of fresh veggies, beautiful chipotle cream on the taco and an interesting addition of black pudding to the pork belly tostada. The space is cool and the staff were all lively I can't wait to come back for dinner!
A. C. M.
Above average service, great options for my allergies, great cocktails.
J. B.
Have been here on a few occasions over the years. Great atmosphere. Good food and very efficient friendly staff. We were in the wee snug so apart from a wobbly table 🙄it was ideal as we could chat. Music is loud! However last night the two young guys were playing funky music from my era! God did I want to dance😀
K. M.
Great decor, decent bar selection, wonderful food (THE best guacamole that I've encountered). Long been an admirer of The Basement - it's a good solid bet for a fine evening. Current staff service is pretty damned good, too 🙂👍
K.
We had a great time here - even on a Sunday evening the place was very lively. Staff were great and very attentive. Food and drink was good quality and plenty of
flavour! Would recommend!
M. O.
Cosy Mexican themed bar. Great food and selection of tequila and tequila cocktails.
B. H.
Love it here- great for a meal or a few drinks! Wide selection of beers and cocktails. Cosy atmosphere. Small outdoor area for smokers! The guacamole is delishious!
I. K.
Food is perfect! Though, better make a reservation before going in
R. F.
Cool place to drink or have dinner. Not very expensive , delicious food , excellent service, free WiFi and water always on the table.
D. B.
My absolute favourite Mexican in Edinburgh! The staff are always super lovely the food is always fresh and well seasoned and the drinks are fantastic. The covid precautions they took are spot on and still managed to feel comfortable and cosy as always. Highly recommend!
C. A.
This place is amazing! It can get really busy so you may not be able to find seats. If you do everything looks and smells fantastic.
G. B.
Decent little bar staff always lovely an the food was really nice
c. m.
Absolute top class mexicana bar! The server/bartender was awesome. Broadened my tequila horizons and the food was properly good. Deffo recommended
a. s.
Great vibe, good prices especially for students, Service was fast. Would visit again without hesitation.
G. C.
Booked in for a show at the Playhouse and looked around for decent eateries close by. We both like Mexican so gave this place a try.
Staff were friendly and very helpful.
Ordered a few plates along with their signature guacamole which they make in from of you at the table.
Mrs is veggie and had the veg fajitas which she loved.
I had ordered the duck taquitas and fish tacos and both were amazing.
We had got the traditional Mexican cake for dessert which was also fantastic.
Food was fresh and tasty, spicy without blowing your head off.
Drinks were also great and cocktails fresh and imaginative.
Stand out cocktail for me was the kiwi and jalapeno which sounds a strange mix but was absolutely fantastic.
Highly recommended place
K. G.
Food was really nice and good value. Service on the other hand.... While staff is friendly, they struggled to remember what food they pick up at the kitchen... We ordered two burritos. When the food came waitress simply said that she doesn't really remember which one is chicken and which one is pork and just left it for us to figure out. When we tasted it, it turned out that she did mix those up indeed. We did tell her about the mistake and all we got was 'sorry'. Not cool....
Therefore if you are looking for good cheap food and drink, and are not too bothered about getting a different order, this is a great place to visit.
C. S.
Wow, this place is fun. Very helpful staff who seem to enjoy discussing their menu. The food was like no Mexican I've ever tried before but it was brilliant and so full of flavour. There was plenty for us vegetarians to choose from and it was hard to make a final decision. I'd recommend it to anyone!
r. s.
Some great Mexican food, good selection of drinks and very attentive and polite staff. Having the guacamole made at the table was really interesting and among the best I've tried.
I highly recommend the beef shin tacos and the taco pescada. We'll be back next time we're in Edinburgh!
H. J.
Amazing Mexican food with a fabulous atmosphere. Ate here on my birthday - got a complimentary glass of Prosecco! We opted for the guacamole starter which was made fresh at your table - tasted amazing! I opted for two tacos as my main - the slow cooked beef was to die for! My husband had the fajitas and they looked great. I also tried a chilli margarita which was pretty spicy! Look forward to visiting again on our next trip to Edinburgh!
G. M.
Good food, guacamole mixed at the table, plenty of veggie dishes and a choice of wines by the glass. Prices were reasonable and service friendly and efficient. We asked for a change of table as we were originally to be right next to the singer which would have made conversation impossible and were moved to a much quieter place. We ate in the bar area as the dog was with us.
T. E.
This is a modern style bar that serves fajitas and other Mexican style food rather than a Mexican restaurant. Good range of drinks and the food is nice. Not too pricey. Fairly hip atmosphere and decor without being pretentious.
S. T.
Busy little place. Very cute
We had the guacamole (which was not made at the table) and natchos (skip theses, just so bad). The tacos were pork and beef and both were good, but I'd double down on the beef and skip the pork. Always nice to have Pacifico with a Mexican meal.
L. A.
Swift service, gorgeous cosy setting. Personally didn't think the food was as nice as it sounded on the menu but it definitely wasn't bad
N. J. (.
I love this place. The food is always amazing and the staff a super friendly and so nice to chat with. I love coming here for a few margarita's with my friend. Every time we go we hope they add the fruit empanadas with chocolate sauce back on the menu as they were divine but the churro's are just as tasty.
It's always worthwhile to book a table just in case they are busy, which they always are when ever I visit.
S. T.
Most importantly the food is GOOD. The decor interesting and fun..(Soup of the day = Tequila!) The staff are friendly and helpful over the menu. Im veggie and my friend isnt but we both enjoyed our meals which is often not the case. We will be back...two thumbs up!
C. S.
From the outside, this place looks pretty unappealing, but hands down this is some of the tastiest Mexican food I've ever had. There's a great selection of cocktails (largely based on tequila and mezcal, of course) and other drinks, but the large plates and smaller sharing plates are just divine. We had fish tacos, broccoli tempura wraps and chorizo and crayfish tacos, which were delicious. Would definitely recommend.
J. M.
Good Mexican, I liked the Fajitas, which come on a 2 level plate. The section of beers were great.
I. B.
We loved it here, particularly for the food, before its revamp last year and were a little sceptical about it’s change to a purely Mexican menu, even though we loved it for the burritos. Thankfully the burritos stayed and taste just as good, the other items are equally as delicious even if it takes a couple of secs to work out what the traditional titles actually are. The friendly, upbeat atmosphere continues to draws us back again and again.
M. C.
Found this place randomly while searching for somewhere to eat. Staff all really nice and friendly and the cocktails and food were both fantastic, recommended.
K. T.
The restaurant and bar as a whole has an incredible atmosphere. Live DJ, beautiful and modern decor, and fully stocked bar made it feel hip and exciting.
My friend and I both ordered the chorizo burrito and while mine was tasty, my friend said theirs had barely any meat inside, which I also noted after inspection. We also ordered churros for dessert, which the waiter forgot to bring out. When it came, it was basically all batter and no base (in other words, eating an onion ring with no onion in it).
I ordered the piña colada, and while the presentation was great, my drink tasted like alcohol and water, like it was not mixed properly.
We also had to hunt the waiter down to pay our check after about 15 minutes of no service. I saw the table next to us do the same thing earlier in the evening. To The Basement's credit, the waiting staff was extremely nice and accommodating.
Overall, I think The Basement could be a super cool hangout if you want to get a beer or tequila. The atmosphere was awesome. The food was so so, and the waiting staff was very nice. I don't think I would personally come back but would not discourage others from giving it a try.
J. S.
Fantastic restaurant with great vibes and a great menu. Cocktail specials and tequila deals when I was there made the evening much more exciting and fun than originally expected to be! Strongly recommend for any visitor in Edinburgh looking for a high energy spot for a late night dinner with the chance to get nice and drunk afterwards.
R. W.
Food was delicious and a reasonable price. Brilliant selection of drinks and good food choices. Staff were very friendly and helpful, I contacted them before our visit to make a booking over email and they were very useful. Restaurant was decorated beautifully with a Mexcian theme throughout. My only slight criticism would be that the table we sat on was very small and barely fitted all our food on! Would be better to have 1 less table and slightly larger ones possibly? Also the chairs, although beautifully decorated, were old wooden chairs which were not very comfortable.
R. S.
I used to frequent the basement many years ago when Edinburgh was having it's first wave of Mexican food and always enjoyed it. We ventured back recently and the menu is entirely updated and the quality and flavours are first class.
And it still has that funky, chilled "basement feel" that it always did, a long lived Edinburgh institution for a reason 😎
S. D.
Amazing bar, great staff, great choice of drinks and the food is just sublime!
You have never had nachos like these before. Don't believe me? Just pop over and try them, best I've ever tasted.
Totally going again, next time I'm in town.
K. H.
Always brilliant! I'd happily live on the fish tacos for the rest of my life!
J. G.
A great spot - a mix between pub atmosphere and Mexican food/drinks which actually works really well. It can massively crowded so make sure you book if you want to have dinner. Can be quiet around lunch/brunch time, so you may want to try it at the point too. Great range of drinks and friendly staff. Lovely location, at the top of vibrant Broughton Street and close to the rest of central Edinburgh.
S. F.
Having been a regular at the 'old' Basement for over a decade, I was wary of new owners coming in and changing a place I loved so much but to their credit, they have transformed the place with new comfy seats, bright (but not too bright) lighting and a fab new menu. Still Mexican themed, the new menu offers fresh options including guacamole made to order at your table. The cocktail menu is pretty good too.
T. W.
I guess because they're right next to multiple festival venues I'll be lenient on them. The service was shockingly slow. We got told upon making the booking that we had to leave by 2100 no ifs ands or buts. We arrived early and the staff were very helpful getting out table ready. The food was also really good. The service was great up until we were all looking to leave. Having been told they needed the table at 2100 we ended up waiting about 30 mins before we had to send a member of the group up to request the bill. By this point it was 2120. I guess they didn't desperately need the table after all.
J. H.
I love this place - such an Edinburgh institution! Great food, very central and a brilliant vibe.
The food is always dependable - who doesn't love Mexican food and the Basement do it as it should be, without fuss.
Food aside this is a great place for after work drinks - the crowd seems to move quite regular so even if you go when it's full a table always becomes available .
A. K.
I looooved the food and the drinks! A little slow customer service but they were all very polite and conversational so overall a great experience!
J. B.
Amazing frozen margueritas, lovely Mexican food, and the place we discovered Pickerings Gin (haven't looked back!).... bar staff are highly knowledgeable and the cocktails are fab. I love this place for the relaxed ambience and hip vibe.
L. A.
I like this place, but the Mexican was all a bit bland, needed some spicing up, and the frozen margaritas did seem to have any booze in them at all, I had to check I wasn't drinking a mock-tail.
For what they charge I would expect something a little more special.
P. S.
As an American who lives in a part of the country with the best Tex-Mex food available, this little basement joint was a pleasant surprise in Edinburgh. The chile con queso was quite good (even though it isn't like it is back home) and the chicken fajitas were also quite delicious. After a encounter with "nachos" in a London pub, I was worried about trying Tex-Mex food again in the UK. But The Basement was a welcome surprise for a road weary traveler who was a little homesick. Service was great. Our server was the most attentive one we had during our entire visit to the UK. Most seem to never come back to check on you after you get your food, but our server checked on us regularly. I definitely recommend The Basement!
R. H.
Initially, my boyfriend & I visited The Basement as we had a Groupon voucher. On our first visit we were extremely impressed by the food and the kind and friendly staff who made the atmosphere welcoming. As we loved the food so much, we returned on several occasions, taking family members with us who equally enjoyed the food as much as us. We have also recommended it to many friends & will continue to do so. I give The Basement 10/10! :)
C. F.
The basement is great. They serve fairly authentic Mexican food at not crazy prices. They have a tonne of tequilas and the other dronks are quite varied and of a high quality.
C. M.
Fantastic brunch menu. Really great food.
S. S.
I'm not sure I understand what the fuss is all about... Been here three times. On the three occasions, some items on the food menu were unavailable (but only were told when ordering...). Same with drinks the last two times. Our food was good, tasty, but in terms of Mexican food... Quite average, in my opinion. I guess I was just expecting something more especial after hearing people raving about it.
J. D.
If you're from the states, especially California, this just about hits the spot for the style of Mexican food you'd enjoy. The Taco Al Pastor (pork tacos) are fantastic and they make a pretty mean margarita. So far they serve the best taco's I've had in Edinburgh.
M. M.
I always really enjoy the Basement. Great selection of beers on draft and in bottle (love being able to get a pint of Joker IPA), really interesting selection of spirits, the food is decent and the staff are always friendly. I especially love the gorgeous selection of artwork for sale, which adds to the great ambiance.
C. P.
Go early or reserve because this is a very popular bar and restaurant. We went at 4:30 on a Saturday and just barely got a seat in the restaurant. Had carne asada tacos and a burrito, with fresh guacamole. So good! It's Mexican food, but little bit more fancy. Great margheritas toi. The only complaint I have is that the restroom was smelly, like someone had been sick in there. 32 pound for dinner and two drinks, not bad. I would recommend.
L. M.
The portobello mushroom and mini corn fajitas were delicious and filling. I love that they have blue moon on tap here (though it's not cheap!) I've not noticed much of a change since the refurbishment.
However, they offer to make the guacamole at your table, which is something of a novelty! But at least you know it's fresh!
T. W.
Great food and friendly staff, reasonable prices and a wide range of drinks, seems to be a good place for a snack and a few pints before going out. Not family friendly if you have anyone younger than 18 due to licensing laws. The food is very tasty, order the guacamole.
M. I.
Yummy veggie Mexican food, we had chickpea and broccoli fajitas and nachos which were very nice.
Y. K.
Nice place and friendly staff. Had enchiladas with beef and chorizo. It was tasty but I also had sore stomach for 2 days after that. But I liked the place and I think I might give it one more chance. Stay away from the chorizo though!
M. K.
Fantastic place! Great food and cocktails and super friendly staff!
D. M.
I've been to the Basement a few times, mostly just for drinks, or so the plan goes... Their fajitas are awesome and pretty much whenever we're there someone will suggest them and suddenly the whole table is ordering!
It's cosy, with quirky decor, bike wheels and barrels seem to feature quite a lot!
D. N. A.
FINALLY brought kicking and screaming into the 21st century with a recent refurb & new owners.
What was once a fairly grotty basement bar (which admittedly did serve great nachos) is now a bright, welcoming Mexican diner / bar.
Main dishes are slightly more expensive than they were before but the fajitas are about the best I've ever had.
G. D.
Excellent food, brilliant hospitality and superb price. We would really recommend a meal/evening in the Basement. It is a quirky place full of character with an excellent menu. We love going to the restaurant everytime we come to Edinburgh. Cannot recommend enough.
C. P.
The Basement has recently had a makeover. A lick of paint, some new furniture and some general tlc has made all the difference to this Broughton Street institution. But the general vibe, friendly staff and great food and wine have all stayed, making it as reliable as it always was.
The food menu has had a bit of a rework to focus more on traditional Mexican dishes. There are more tapas-style options on the small eats menu, and having sampled the empanadas, I can’t wait to try more. I also loved the sizzling fajitas from the main course menu. The large portion was great value for money and incredibly tasty.
I loved the Basement’s new look, and I’m really looking forward to sampling more from the new food menu and drinks list.
D. C.
A very enjoyable, and unique, pub and restaurant.
The decor is an eclectic mix of industrial furniture and fixture mixed with the staff uniform of Hawaiian shirts.
The staff are all friendly and generally attentive with only a forgotten request for a bill being the notable exception.
The food is good and always tasty with a leaning towards Mexican food but plenty of other options such as (huge)fish and chips or lasagne.
The chocolate cheesecake is just the right amount of chocolatey without stepping over into being sickly and the banoffee pie is easily worth visiting for by itself.
The bat stocks your standard selection but also has a healthy selection of smaller or micro brewery drinks available. Definitely a place to kick off a night out.
E. C.
We had 3 courses and 3 drinks including a cocktail for 2 and it was only £75. Great tasting food, such a nice atmosphere was stayed all night and the staff were lovely.
A. D.
Great atmosphere & loved the freshly made guacamole at the table !!! New seasoning on fajitas far too spicy for us, despite additional sour cream, but meals were deducted from bill, so we'll be back to try again !!!
I. T.
After a second visit I had to downgrade my review from 4 stars to 3. We ordered the same amount of small plates like the first time and the portions were much smaller and the quality wasn't as good. On my first visit I was feeling good after 2 small plates but the second time I left feeling hungry.
M. F.
This place has a really nice vibe, inside is dark and rough but decorated well. The staff were super friendly and we got 2 mains courses for £12 which was a great deal as the food was delicious. This is a great spot for lunch or a dinner date.
R. E.
Great pub style mexican food, perfect for a casual night out. Decor is contemporary, probably not to everyone's taste. Quirky, fun place, friendly staff. Good choice on the menu and large cocktail menu
S. D.
I unfortunately went vegan recently, but until then I actually would have called this place my 2nd home. The food is fresh and flavoursome and the staff are sooooo helpful and friendly. It's warm with a great atmosphere and good music.
Their nacho's were a favourite drinking accompaniment of mine and my friends for a few years :o)
S. A.
Super tasty cocktail. My friend ordered by mistake an alcoholic drink (she not liking alcohol) and was shocked when she realised it wasn't alcohol free - it was delicious!
Food is good as well, but being drinks so nice I would stick to those.
L. B.
Excellent service, generous portion sizes, excellent recommendation's from staff and perfect food. Loved it
K. A.
The Basement is in a convenient location on Broughton Street and is a good place either to grab a cocktail during a night out or to have a casual meal. The menu is mainly Mexican and it is all cooked well. The staff are all friendly and chatty and there's some outdoor seating as well which was fab last week when it was so warm in Edinburgh.
A. T.
Really great modern Mexican food. Menu was a good range and not too extensive. Recommend the roasted cod, esquites and broccoli tacks.
A. D.
This restaurant is great! The staff is really welcoming and friendly. Food is delicious and well presented. I'd also recommend to try the guacamole thet prepare directly in front of you.
R. D.
Just gone through a bit of a refurb and only been in there for drinks since but it seems much bigger. There are some good beers on sale and the staff have lost the Hawaiian shirts now. I'll definitely go back to try the food as it looks to have changed for the better
H. M.
How the Basement managed revamp and refresh the whole bar to create a (relatively) clean and airy space whilst maintaining their signature underground hive feel is a mystery. It is a great space to go for drinks and food. Great beer selection, viable wine choices, fantastic cocktails (especially tequila based and the Bloody Mary has saved many a tired moment) Indeed, many times going for a drink leads to drinks leads to the need for food; and similarly a meal leads to a dessert cocktail leads to.... you know! The Basement it a vortex of time and space - you'll lose track of time for sure. Feels truly like stumbling on a secret.
J. P.
Great cocktail knowledge, food was outstanding, service was friendly. Couldn't recommend more
C. G.
Simply beautiful Mexican food. The nachos here are the best I've ever had. Service very good and staff friendly. Highly recommended!
C. S.
🇲🇽 Really great ‘hidden gem’ of a place!
Booked, as something special, whilst on our trip to Edinburgh. We weren’t disappointed- great, tasty authentic Mexican food, with a real street vibe.
Friendly staff made it all the better 👌🏻🌮
1.
Had a lovely night, the bar man couldn't have been more helpful and passionate about the job. The best daiquiri in Edinburgh, not on the menu but was made for me regardless!
G. B.
This used to be a regular nightcap spot on the way home, but haven't been for a while so this was the first visit since it's been refurbished and with new owners.
It's been tidied up outside and the interior now has some funky day of the dead type Mexican decor. Can't comment on the food but I did feel it seemed to be more focussed on food than being a bar now. And I really miss the gigantic Magnum (Tom Selleck not the choc ice on a stick).
Seems to of lost a bit of character, but will try it again to see as it's still a handy nightcap spot ;-)
D. O.
Cheap and very cheerful food. The chilli is definitely recommended as is the banoffee pie! The seating area is a bit cramped, and can be busy - but with food this good, you can't complain. The decor is nothing to write home about, but the friendly upbeat atmosphere of this place makes up for it.
P. D. L. N.
Went yesterday for an afternoon meal: the bruschetta was cold and soggy (the cook was joking and chatting at the bar instead of working in the kitchen so probably the kitchen potter made it) the main course chicken & bacon casserole was tasty and OK. Service fluctuates depends on whom is serving you. Drinks are so overpriced (£ 4.25 for a pint of Estrella) Due to the bar location is a good meeting point but if you are planning for a big drinking session you may end up re mortgaging your flat...
G. T.
I've been here before, it's a Mexican restaurant and the main courses we had were excellent, the atmosphere was pleasant and the service was good but the huge let down was the Churros for our desert, they were way over cooked and were really just a warm crunchy biscuit, but other tables had them as well and they were all the same, definitely not as they should be, shame.
M. K.
Love the Basement. The food is incredible, if you're looking for great Mexican chow this is the place. Great to just stop off for a drink too, staff really friendly and helpful.
B. D.
I came for the cocktails, and they did not disappoint! The food was a pleasant surprise, but I was blown away by the service! Cannot recommend this place enough.
K. F.
Great place to meet friends, fantastic selection of cocktails and the food is absolutely amazing. The pub also displays artwork from local artists which are available to purchase. Will be going back again.
K. M.
Good drinks selection, great food. Getting a little too popular for my taste these days however, can hardly hear yourself think let alone hold a conversation.
D. M.
Lovely restaurant with a cosy atmosphere and very helpful and friendly staff.
A. H.
Great margaritas slow.service and steak was tough and not edible.love the.place but was very disappointed on this visit
P. M.
Had a fantastic meal, staff were great - friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was very upbeat, we felt the great vibe as soon as we entered the restaurant.
M. F. B.
nice spot, decent Food, mostly tex-Mex, locals and friendly staff
c. m.
Amazing margaritas, just need to come back for food as the menu looks incredible!
T. J.
When I came with my friend, we decided to go for the tapas menu, rather than mains, and all of the food was lovely, although we definitely should have had more than 5 dishes between us - however, add in some Purple Ruin cocktails (gin, apricot brandy, and creme de cassis), and this little underground bar/restaurant gets super cosy. Especially if you manage to grab one of the window sofa seats. Top marks for the awesome 90's playlist, not so top marks for having to go up to the bar after 15 minutes of waiting for the bill after asking for it, and then having to go up again to pay, ten minutes later.
A. S.
Amazing food, fast service great staff. Excellent
A. M.
Food is amazing, at a great price too. Would recommend food to all. Unfortunately toilets don't look clean. Sticky doors and broken toilet seat in a dark atmosphere.
m.
Fun place with friendly staff.
V. G.
Tasty food, great drinks, and a lovely atmosphere! What more could one ask for
M. C.
Interesting underground bar, which is quite common in Edinburgh, but this one has a secret room, where you can sample their very own coctail creations. They also do food but can't comment on that as I haven't tried it. The coctails are very different, I will leave it at that!
N. w.
My wife liked it but not for me. Tacos fell apart and messy. Drink prices high. Funky decor ok.
R. D.
Good vibes, food very tasty but a wee bit pricey for size of portion will need to order 2 mains if you are like me £18.
A. S.
Exceeded expectations in every way. Food was amazing. Price was right. Super impressive tequila list. knowledgeable and attentive staff.
C. A.
Such good food, extensive drinks menu. Staff were great fun and attentive despite us being a loud bunch (especially Grace!)
D. L.
Good food and great range of tequilas reasonably priced. Nice friendly staff and atmosphere
T. B.
Nice selection of beers also with some decent coctails (didnt tried myself, neither did food yet)
But it's close to where I live and nice atmosphere :) go on and check it yourself
A. S.
Delicious Mexican food - always looks like just another pub and always an amazing reminder that it's so much better than that. An amazing mezcal selection too!
K. B.
Very busy but we were kept updated with any wait times for food. This place has a great atmosphere and very, very friendly staff! Thanks for a great night guys!
M. G.
Seating is basic, however the food was great, particularly for a vegetarian( Sizzling Fajitas, veg). Service also was good and fast.
S. P.
The quesadillas did not seem to have any queso. The food is interesting I suppose ingredients wise, but could be better and take the same amount of time to come out.
G. D.
Loved this place. Wish we were having more than a pre-dinner drink, especially when we saw the food coming out to another table!
H. W.
Lovely staff and cocktails. The food looks good but is a little bland for Mexican food.
M. J.
Delicious food and great service. Must try the guacamole, although it's the best part of their menu, it was a little inconsistent the last time
K. K.
Great margaritas and mezcal selection. Brunch menu is excellent value. Staff is the best!
B. K.
Great fajitas, but the pico de gallo and other salas are a bit tasteless. The quesadillas were way too salty. The fajitas saved the day..
J. P.
Excellent service. Sauce was inedibly salty but it was dealt with well by the friendly and competent staff. The replacement, and the rest of the food, was delicious.
E. G.
Cosy and fun atmosphere, exceptional food and drink for reasonable prices. I have always received great customer service.
A. I.
Great food. Lively place. Good cocktails and a huge tequila and mezcal selection.
M. A.
Great vibe, great food, great drinks! Came in here with a group of 16 on a saturday afternoon and got the chance to eat the delicious food and have a few nice drinks! Well done!
B. M.
Pretty much unchanged over the years, small and lively basement bar. Good place to kick the night off and sample tequila! Grest fish tacos!
B. F.
Been here twice for staff nights out and it’s a smashing wee place! Lovely cocktails, great food and fantastic atmosphere would definitely return!
L.
Great staff, good grub and they even make the guacamole fresh in front of you. Wonderful atmosphere and a good little out side smoking snug.
T. L. L. R.
Nice place to stop for a filling lunch for under £10
G. G.
Tacos were delicious, churros very tasy but brownie was disgusting.
Service was really good and staff friendly.
Would recommend.
S. P.
Friendly staff. Good Mexican food and decor. Nice selection of drinks including cocktails with tequila
M. M.
Good atmosphere, nice space. The chicken ceasar salad wasn't great, but the duck tacos and con queso were AMAZING
J. B.
Banging Food, Great Drinks, Best Mexican in Edinburgh!
M. G.
Very nice place to go for drinks with great atmosphere. The food is also nice and the staff is very friendly.
S. W.
Been here for years. New long island ice tea is minging man. Too much lime, not enough cola. 5 star for food and staff, I'll change to 5 once yous fix the drink!
F. S.
Used to frequent the basement for years but when it changed I stopped going. So, first visit for about 3 years... Its not the same but the food was good and the staff were friendly, I couldn't complain!
n. r.
I first came here soon after it opened, over 25 years ago. Now, new owners, new vibe, and my beloved skulls all over. Still great.
r. s.
Food is okay but drinks can be very expensive and music is very loud for the size of the venue.
E. P.
Awesome food, drinks and chilled out atmosphere. Service is always great
J. D.
Food was delicious and staff really helpful, service was also quick. Pints very expensive though
K. S.
Place is great but one staff member was completely ignorant. Couldn't give a toss. I can only assume he was planning to quit later that day
J. P.
Went here for a hogmanay lunch. The staff were very accomodating despite members of our group arriving in dribs and drabs and ordering separately, and the beer battered fish was lush.
S. H.
Super friendly staff and surprise: pretty good Mexican food! Order the guacamole and watch them make it at your table.
K. G.
Cool, cosy and very friendly. Good Mexican food and a mean blood orange margarita.
H. H.
Lovely food, warm and friendly atmosphere, good price, would come and eat here again
S. G.
Delicious well presented food, in a quirky basement joint, with friendly and beautiful staff. Very recommended! Espically hot sause 2
D. G.
Outstanding service and quality food. It's been used as a working space and I'll definitely consider coming back. Thanks

Great Mexican food, good drinks and there was even live music when we were there.

The staff is really nice. They've got nice beer. Pitty they don't have a better Coctail selection.
