Reviews of The Blackbird
E. 5.
My partner and I have been here twice in the last few weeks, and it was fantastic on both occasions! Hannah served us the 2nd time, and she was absolutely lovely. Love their approach to sustainability with local / seasonal garnishes too. The wings, burgers & cocktails were amazing!
P. C.
The food was acceptable, but didn't really offer value for money. My chicken burger was a little on the dry side and it lacked enough of the pineapple dressing. Fries were bog standard frozen ones. Ordered a second drink before food arrived and didn't get it until we'd nearly finished our food. Service was very good, however.
D.
We arrived without a reservation to a busy restaurant but the staff managed to make room for us. We ordered a cocktail and a burger each.
I ordered the the made in Japan cocktail, which had a nice citrus flavour but lacked in whisky for my taste. My girlfriend ordered a raspberry and ginger beer mocktail which had a sharp initial taste and a sweet ginger beer finish.
The chicken burger was okay, a little dry and not very crispy, but the beef burger was absolutely delicious.
The meal and drinks were more expensive than I'd have liked for their quality, but it was a good time and it's a lovely place worth spending an hour enjoying the food and drink.
J. R.
£62 (incl 10% service charge) for 2 beers, 1 cola, 2 mains, 2 starters and 2 sides of fries. We’re talking £5.70 for a pint of I&G. My chicken burger was flavourful but slightly dry. From frozen fries, very small portion for £4 and no seasoning. Heinz Mayo & ketchup provided. Quick friendly service. Sat inside near the bar. Comfy chair and large enough table for 3 people. Noise level low and good ambient music.
J. C.
Food tasty and generous servings, lively atmosphere although a bit darker and quieter in the back which suited my small group. Good customer service which was attentive but not annoying and we were left in peace to eat. A rare luxury ! Had a sneaky wee bloody mary while waiting for my friends to arrive which was deliciously spicy. I have been thinking about it ever since. Wish I'd ordered two.
D. S.
I had a great time while eating delicious brunch at your restaurant. The waiters and waitresses were committed to great service and were very friendly. We could pre-order in advance as we were quite a big group and the food arrived very quickly as soon as the majority of us were in the restaurant.
J. H.
We had an absolutely fabulous time! It was perfect for a girls night out. The cocktails and food were delicious and great value for money. The staff were very friendly and it had a fun atmosphere. Would definitely visit again :)
K. K.
Beer garden is beautiful. Staff is super friendly. Drinks are all good but our favorite was the peach walnut old fashioned. Good food too!
J. C.
Terrific back terrace, solid food, delicious cocktails, and exceptionally good service.
I dined here with my family on a trip to Edinburgh and the staff went out of their way to give us a good experience. When they were out of their chicken wings, for example, they offered to cut up a chicken strip, and then bread and fry it as chicken strips. They didn't have these on the menu but it was a much appreciated gesture.
The cocktails were also very very good. Try the Big in Japan, a mix of a couple different whiskeys, yuzu, bitters, and a chickpea emulsion that made it frothily delicious.
The Blackbird is a 10 minute walk away from Old Town, but it felt like a real local spot. Especially if you are looking for an outdoor dining situation that's not exposed to wind (and has decent cover), you really can't go wrong.
B. K.
Cool place, great vibe, good selection of cocktails, reasonably priced. We did not have any food, but it smelled wonderful. We will defo be back.
F. A.
Absolutely lovely/very professional staff and nice atmosphere. Beautiful interior and beer garden out the back with umbrella cover and ash trays provided. Drinks weren’t really my thing and I thought they were pricey for what we got. Recommend if you enjoy more bitter cocktails rather than sweet; my friend absolutely loved the Venice Negroni.
N.
Staff are always so helpful. It's a great atmosphere. The booze is good. I've had lots of great times in this place :)
K. B.
The food is not very fresh (either from the freezer or the fridge). They served me an avocado mash that was spoiled (brown, tasting like it was in the fridge for ages), so they brought a new one. It wasn't fresh either - super cold (to almost a freezing point) and also tasting like it was in the fridge, but not spoiled (at least!).
The hash browns and tomatoes super greasy, it seems like the food comes straight from the freezer, the can or from days in the fridge.
No vegan options for food or even tea (no vegetable milk available).
Service is friendly, but I don't recommend eating there in case you are looking for tasty fresh flavours.
S. M.
Came here with my girlfriend a couple nights ago and had an AMAZING experience!!! Hannah was our server that evening and we couldn't help but be in awe of her kindness and how natural she felt :) The food was great and we will be coming back here very soon
A. G.
Great food and beer, proper pub. Also has a nice looking beer garden, but never used it since it's Scotland and the weather usually sucks.
M. P.
Lovely little quirky bar amd very friendly staff who made us feel very welcome I would definitely recommend the food looked amazing but unfortunately we had just ate somewhere else.
A. W.
Nice beer garden out the back. Nice bar staff. Bit pricey and food looks good but didn't order. Not too many seats.
I. M.
Went for a few drinks and food, food was really good with a food atmosphere and friendly staff
S. W.
Had a lovely time. Cocktails and food were delicious, staff were friendly and the atmosphere was vibey. Exactly what we wanted, perfect for a girlies cocktail night. Would recommend & visit again.
P. A.
Ernesta and Tara were just brilliant. Lovely, friendly, so welcoming and great with recommendations. My partner is GF and DF and nothing was too much trouble to tweak to make sure she was able to enjoy her food, the beef brisket burger. I had the buffalo chicken burger and both were incredible. We were both happy food dancing whilst eating… chefs kiss!
Great clean venue, really nice little garden in the back, good music, the toilets are a surprisingly pleasant place to be in and cocktails were delicious. Neither of us are sickly sweet cocktail fans so it was great to see slightly more creative cocktails with different flavours. Ask for a Bloody Mary with Bourbon! Delicious, and perfect with a burger.
A. B.
If you can get a table, this place is such a great littl gem. Good food, and plenty of drinks to choose from.
a.
It's a great bar, staff are very professional and friendly all the time, I always have a good time here.
J. M.
My girlfriend went on her first date with her ex here.
We went for my birthday and sat outside in the garden, it was a gorgeous sun trap. The staff were helpful too, then my table sang happy birthday to me and I was thrilled and embarrassed.
Update: I have now been for breakfast and it was excellent. The waitress, Jennifer, was great, and the eggs benedict was much better than the one I tried to make at home this one time.
Also, my girlfriend is now my fiancée, we're hoping for a summer wedding.
S. I.
There wasn't much variety of food but I had a burger and I was good. Their mixed drinks were excellent and the staff were lovely.
M. R.
Nice place great cocktail menu and service but more han £6 a pint is spicy 🤔🍻
R. W.
Lovely staff, great cocktails, comfy seating inside and out the back.
K. F.
Great cocktails and a fantastic beer garden, a hidden gem.
A. B.
Lovely bar, live music and good pints. Great stuff all round
G. L.
Just went into the blackbird after walking past it for years. I was really impressed with the setting, the staff and the range of gluten free food. The beer garden is lovely and is dog friendly.
Update August 2021:. The beer garden is still very comfortable and is now surrounded by beautiful foliage. The updated menu has loads of excellent gluten free options.
However I am deducting one star because after my review 2 years ago The Blackbird still does not offer gluten free beer, despite the very friendly GF menu. This is a shame, with Scotland producing so much excellent GF craft beer, and with Bellfield (one of the best dedicated GF breweries) just across the city. Also there is an amazing variety of excellent porter, IPA, and bitter from First Chop Brewery in Manchester.
N. H.
Superb bar and restaurant in west Edinburgh.
Very good food, great range. Buttermilk chicken on waffles with mac n cheese was super; heirloom tomatoes, halloumi and strawberry was a great salad.
Peanut butter espresso martini is to die for. Heartily recommended.
Really good service, good vibe to the place.
D. J.
Excellent stop of when touring city
J. G.
Cocktails were fantastic, everyone that I was able to try that is...but if those are anything to go by I'd say there isn't a bad drink on the menu!
Food looked amazing even though it was only from glaring at the table next to me.
Would definitely recommend this as a must go, staff were all very helpful and friendly. I will absolutely be back!
H. K.
Dog friendly and very welcoming straight away with bringing a bowl of water over for our little doxie. We were able to get drinks on the cocktail menu with a little wait on ordering food . All in all great place and quirky. The staff are very friendly and polite
M. A.
Its an amazing place. The food is delicious, the staff is great, the outdoor garden is just perfect for the sunny days in Scotland, well even if it rains you can still have your pint outside. Highly recommended.
A. B.
In our 2 day stay, we have visited twice. All staff were lovely but Catherine stood out both times as she was so lovely and welcoming! Really nice place with a fab vibe. Would definitely recommend and visit it again.
R. A.
Very nice little cafe with a pretty seated area at the back with heaters to keep you cosy in mid Nivember. We all had the pancakes which were very nice! -yum!
I. W.
Successful refurb of the long-lamented Old Toll bar. Sensibly limited menu and interesting selection of beers. Apt music choices for a trendy, but X-generational bar just off city-centre blessed with friendly, efficient staff. Perfect for a casual meal, especially on a sunny day! Why? Try it to find out! 😊
T. M.
Came here initially for the dessert as I'd heard that it was really good. It did not disappoint, I really enjoyed my desert. Washed it down with a rum and coke after!!
T. G.
Fantastic place. Great food, service & ambience. Plus very good value for money. Nice menu with interesting dishes, reasonably priced.
G. M.
Busy bar with a good size terrace, offers both food and drink with a range of items on offer and a decent selection of cocktails; staff are friendly and professional. Popular with a younger crowd mostly, although a good place to stop for a drink and a bite to eat.
G. 4.
Great cocktails and lovely staff. Food was okay too but cocktails for the win!
A. v. W.
I asked for a saucy chicken burger, which turned out to have a wee bit of mayo and warm grated carrot salad on it. The Rosemary chips wasn't warm. The overall experience was just average.
D. L.
Brilliant pub, great beer and staff, outside space amazing too.
L. T.
Really enjoyed our meal here.
e. a.
Tasty food and really nice cocktails. A bit loud but as expected on a Friday night.
A. S.
Yummy food. Great service. Fine selection of beers on tap. Red, white and rose wines also.
M. B.
Lovely cosy little bar, Home Alone on the TV, friendly attentive staff, pretty quiet but it was a Tuesday
C. R.
Great cocktails, kind staff
D. 8.
Dog friendly place with nice food and staff 😊
P. M.
Really great atmosphere and a good range of interesting drinks.
Mains food is fine, but the bar snacks are a total let down. They clearly don't have enough care put into them, the crab fries in particular are just inedible, though they sound nice on the menu.
Other than that it's one of Edinburgh's choice pubs, with a particularly amazing beer garden.
A. H.
Great setup, beer garden very pleasant, but consistently waited 20-25 minutes for each round to be served, with the place only at half full.
R. J.
Very nice. We managed to get a table, as it was really busy. Staff were great. I'll go there again. 👍 👍
A. G.
My favourite bar in Edinburgh for cocktails, beers, and a lovely atmosphere.
I. M.
Pretty good. Food nice, beers very good, service very good.
Shame they allow smoking in the garden area as that's pretty grim.
T. B.
Lovely place with a nice beer garden in the backyard. Delicious food and drinks. Will be back soon.
P. P.
Lovely little place with great food and staff. Beer choice good too
j. s.
Lovely place, fantastic cocktails, great food and great little sun trap of a beer garden. Would highly recommend it.
L. R.
Atmosphere very nice and friendly staff. Some interesting options on the menu, and very tasty food
D. B.
Great menu. Team very friendly and attentive. Covid protocols seemed good. Small hiccup with a part on two meals but dealt with immediately.
M. B.
Had my 50th birthday party here. Food was wonderful and the staff were just fantastic. Thanks to all!
D. D.
A nice beer garden with an indoor space also for brunch lunch or dinner. It's has a beautiful outdoor space with some dishes that are good. A good selection of beers and spirits and some pretty rad cocktails. The food is not always up to the mark but the service and ambience make up for that. A nice place, to just sit around and socialise.
D. R.
Nice venue, food and drinks are delicious and staff is very friendly. The price is fair, but it does take a while for you to be served.
M. H.
Great place with very friendly staff. Table staff offered and they are very attentive. Great food and great atmosphere!
C. L.
Solid brunch menu! I had the brisket waffles and they were “chef’s kiss”! 👌🏻
I. C.
Nice bar with nice decor, lighting and atmosphere. Quite small inside so sometimes seating can be an issue. However there is a beer garden so quite a good place to go when the weather is good. Typical pricing and service nothing to write home about. Toilets could do with a scrub.
S. L.
The waitress were very nice. The food was very good. It's the best duck and swordfish we ate in all the UK. They gave us some top advices on drinks (beautiful cocktail) and food. The little beer garden is so nice when it's sunny.
k. h.
Decent enough pint at reasonable price, but bit disappointed that after watching our small group take seats and place our coats over back of same, and then serve us, barman told us “Those seats are reserved, sorry”. Why not tell us before we ordered drinks? Poor service lets an otherwise good pub down.
J. A.
Lovely cosy place, lovely staff, only had time for a cocktail, hopefully return to try the food.
T. L.
Really nice place to enjoy a sunny day in the backyard with good food and a tasty beer or with one of the delicious cocktails. And if you like to have a whisky you will find a nice selection. The stuff were really nice and attentive.
M. M.
Lovely staff amazing cocktails great service.
L. H.
Cold wet and hungry we hadn't booked but were found a table for an hour. The food was delicious and the bottle of wine excellent. A very big thank you to the waitress who took pity on us
L. S.
Great in the summer, as it has a brilliant large beer garden. It can get busy in the bar, so if you are wanting food, it may be best to call ahead and book a table. Food is good, nice cocktails. Can't remember if the wine list was extensive, but what I had was good :)
P. E.
One of the best beer gardens in Edinburgh. The rooms are really well decorated with a nice welcoming atmosphere. There is a big selection of drinks and the prices are OK. The staff is nice, but the most important features is the back, outside, beer garden. Plenty of seating available, and smoking friendly 🚬🍻🍺👌
R. H.
Very friendly staff. Managed to fit us in. Good food and service. Highly recommended
S. S.
Menu slightly confusing as unclear on starters and sides. Food slightly underwhelming for the price. Staff seemed overworked and booked table wasn't ready on time. Cocktail menu is amazing though and average prices for those. Dogs allowed and offered water bowel which was nice.
T. W.
We love the food here, but it’s often so busy it takes away from the atmosphere.
The decor is full-on hipster and stylish, with the bar and restaurant split between two rooms. Seating in the restaurant is tight, and the window seats and stools have mismatched heights, and get really uncomfortable.
The food is really great (mussels are *amazing*, and they’ve got pretty good veggie options). They’ve got a pretty good selection of bottled beers (although not as much as interesting on tap). The cocktails are amazing, and have a real flair to them. Service is normally really friendly, although it’s tougher when they get busier.
As a bar, I’ve never been a fan. It’s noisy, crowded, and has TVs on the wall. Stick with food and cocktails!
C. S.
A nice small bar with a mix of high and low tables. A wide variety of cocktails made by skilled bar tenders and served with excellent presentation. Pricing is average for Edinburgh with cocktails from £7. The music is at a level where you can still talk comfortably and there are TVs on the wall.
R. D.
The staff here are so friendly. Lovely atmosphere, didn't eat here but they had a good drinks selection. We were initially standing around a small table (there were quite a few of us) away from the bar. One of the bartenders noticed this and came straight away as soon as a booth cleared up to ask iaf we'd like more room. The staff really make this place stand out. I'll definitely be visiting again.
H. C.
I've been here a few times for drinks, on smarter occasions. The atmosphere always has a bit of a buzz. Their presentation is great - all their fruity ciders are full of fresh fruit which is a nice touch. It is a bit more pricey and can get very busy - but I have enjoyed it every time I've managed to get a seat!
Z. P.
From the blackbird logo wallpaper on the ceiling and art deco mirrors to the huge leather chesterfields with their tweed/denim cushions, The Blackbird is definitely a funky little establishment. (It's from the same people as Treacle and Hamilton's.) You could spend some time deliberating over the large cocktail menu... and I may 'need' to go back to try more. Food-wise, you can expect restaurant quality rather than pub grub. We opted for the fish and chips, and the roasted chickpea veggie burger. The fish was melt in the mouth, while the veggie burger was flavoursome and had a great consistency (no sloppy veggie burgers here!). The staff were also superb – friendly, attentive, and made us feel like regulars even though it was the first time we'd been. We'll definitely be back.
A. W.
Fun interior, cool bar with some really good cocktails, the staff seem to know their stuff too. If you are looking for something less alcoholic, their range of teas are lovely too. The food certainly LOOKS like it would be good, however my friend and I were unable to try anything because both the things we had chosen were 'not on' that day.
R. K.
Delicious burgers, fun atmosphere, friendly staff. Great neighbourhood spot!
C. T.
Nice pub just along from the King's Theatre. Decent selection of beers on draft as well as in the fridges and a sizeable cocktail menu to keep everyone happy. More of a cafe/restaurant vibe during the day as they serve a good range of food, but can have a lively atmosphere in the evening, especially at weekends.
A. B.
Hands-down the best pesto I've ever had. I got the Sea Bass with linguini and pesto. Service was good, even though I was eating alone (not a given at many restaurants, because we don't tend to be as big a ticket). I was there at 8pm on a Friday. It was busy, but I felt unrushed.
C. R.
Nice place to grab a pint & some food. Awesome beer garden out the back for those 3 days of sun we get per year in Scotland. Only didn't get a 5 stars because it always seems to take a while to get served.
J. D.
Impeccable service, friendly staff, really nice relaxed ambience and great presentation of food. The only slight problem was perhaps the spin on the quantity of food. It really was not enough, especially for a cost of £60 for lunch for 2. I felt like I needed lunch afterwards! Went back to the Novotel bar and had some chips and cheesy bites to fill our tummies! I think the Blackbird has got so many things right and if there was a decent quantity of food I would rate them 5 stars.
J. N.
Nice beer garden. I was driving so they had Erdinger and Brewdog IPA AF. My wife had a nice cocktails 🍸.
J. H.
This is a great pub, it is extremely well decorated! It has a lovely beer garden too. It is just so nice inside and the food, drinks and service match it's looks! It is a gem of a pub but I wouldn't personally make it my local as it's not that relaxed and feels a bit more like a restaurant than a pub.
P. V.
Amazing selection of cocktails. I've had a few cocktails here and none of them have disappointed. The food is good pub food, burgers and sharing platters and the like. The onion rings are particularly lovely!
A. C.
Great, relaxed music at a nice conversational volume. Cocktails were of a good standard, well presented and pre made so service was very quick. Some of the seating could have been more comfortable but overall the Blackbird has a laid back, friendly atmosphere.
L. O.
I stopped in here to meet friends prior to heading out. Nice to have table service and a recommendation of drinks. I went for the Manhattan which was simple but potent! £6.50 a drink so not cheap but nice for a couple of drinks prior to heading out elsewhere.
The decor was understated and quite chilled. The bathrooms were immaculate which is a bug bear of mine.
I'm not normally at this end of town but will keep it in mind for the future, maybe for a pre-theatre meal.
N. L.
Beautiful food and great atmosphere. Quick and friendly service, too. Thank you!
L. B.
Lovely staff and beautiful decor. The outdoor bit is so nice too, we had a great time!
P. D.
Lovely wee bar, really happy welcoming staff and dug friendly, can't wait to come back!
V. M.
Very suggestive place, with a small beer garden outside, soft lights give to the place a sofisticate idea emphasized from amazing cocktails served in a very unique way. The menu is inspired from books and tv series. Definitely an experience to do!
J. H.
The Blackbird is trendy, with fantastic decor and a great wee beer garden.
However I think it is a bit try-hard and can feel less than welcoming, maybe that's just my paranoia when I'm around the 'cool' kids.
The food has been hit or miss in my experience and a bit pricey for what it is. The sharing platters are good though.
Ok for a meeting place before heading elsewhere but it is too narrow and too busy to be comfortable for the night.
S. C.
A great bar with a wide range of beers, ciders and cocktails to work your way through, alongside some tasty food. The menu isn't massive but everything I've had there has been pretty tasty. The beer garden out the back is a bit of a plus as there aren't too many places in Edinburgh with one. Recommend booking if you are looking to eat as it isn't a massive place and everytime I've been in it's been pretty packed.
A. L.
Simply just relaxing long lunch
M. P.
Great bar, great tunes, and the food is really superb. Also, fans of Rekorderlig Cider should definitely visit - they had virtually the entire range in there the last time I went! Can't go wrong on a warm summer's day. Beer garden is nice too, a bit concretey but hey, it's still a beer garden - Edinburgh is sorely lacking in them!
T. F.
Foods a bit pricey but I love the place, indoor and outdoor. Always cool people and a nice vibe
K. R.
Lovely food, however the limited menu wasn't clearly advertised prior to arrival and so the GF food we intended on wasn't available. The staff were friendly however.
J.
We were looking for a place to get breakfast and walked past this place and are glad we went in. Very friendly atmosphere and the food was tasty and we'll presented. The coffee was great. Will certainly back again.
J. B.
We had a minor issue with an item of food which was swiftly and satisfactorily dealt with. The food was delicious and we will definitely be back.
M. v.
super welcoming staff and good cocktails overall, but it's all about the looks in this case, and that's in a good way. decor is beautiful, seats are comfy and you can carry on looking around and always be surprised to noticed a little new detail or two hidden somewhere.
A. S.
Really pretty pub. Bit pricey and one of the staff members was quite rude but the rest were fab.
G. S.
Not specifically the blackbird's fault but the whole pub experience in general now is a sorry ordeal. Won't be going back to a pub or restaurant until things return to normal.
A. M.
This is a really trendy bar, I love the way it's decorated and the cocktails. But we had lunch here recently and were disappointed. My jerk chicken was fatty and the chips pretty meager for £3. Often at the weekend it is too busy but lovely for a mid week catch up.
L. R.
Lovely space, both indoors and outdoors. Delicious menu and friendly, helpful staff.
J. H. J.
Very nice servers and love the look of the place. My food was acceptable but the others at my table were unhappy with theirs. None of it was worth the money we paid. The beer selection was good.
S. K.
Cool little place for a cocktail if your up this end of the town. The bar maids are very attentive and keep the place ticking over. Would recommend.
S. S.
Well that was fun, never really went properly before but all was fine! Service, beer, comfy! Nice. 😊 Thanks
S. P.
Wonderful staff, pretty decent cocktails and tasty food in a good location
G. M.
With its comfy sofas, big selection of cocktails, tasty food and chilled out atmosphere, The Blackbird is fast becoming my favourite "local". Everything from the decor to the menu feels pretty cool and a wee bit hipster-ish, but it's not at all pretentious. The cocktails are on the pricier side (although, sadly, so are most cocktails in Edinburgh) but the drinks menu is brimming with delicious choices that are a bit more exciting than your standard Cosmo so I don't mind paying that little bit more. I definitely see this as more of a drinking establishment rather than an eating one, but I have on occasion sampled a few snacky things from the menu and they have always been great.
L. M.
The Black Bird Bar and Restaurant is one of the favourites of mine. Great space - open bar areas, comfy couches, more private booths, a fantastic fairy light-lit beer garden. Food is not your regular pub fish n' chips, it has a great selection of small plates, sandwiches and main courses. As a vegetarian I enjoyed the Chargrilled halloumi with jack fruit, pinenuts and honey for a starter and Courgettes with goats cheese curd for my main. The staff is always helpful, and ready to recommend something to your liking. It's always a good atmosphere and pleasant vibes. Weekends get pretty busy in there, and it can get cramped, but you always have the beer garden(with heating lamps)!
S. E. E.
Amazing selection of sweet, strong and classic cocktails. The atmosphere is nice. Music is not overpowering and staff are really friendly and Will be back for sure. A hidden gem.
K. S.
Finding places in Edinburgh that allow dogs can be tricky but the blackbird is so dog friendly, my dog owning friends and me regularly go here. The veggie menu is good and there's an outside smoking bit, so every type of friend you have can hang out with you here. Get early to secure a prime sofa seat though as the hipsters occupy them all day. While there's something really hip about the blackbird, its not pretentious, unless I'm pretentious and just don't see it? (Oi!) The staff are friendly and helpful, they will offer you an alternative and try to cater for you. If your dog is especially cute, (whose isn't?) don't expect to see much of it, the crowd are super friendly!!
F. H.
Great place to eat and drink. Standard prices for Edinburgh, food is excellent, staff super friendly and they have a great whisky selection. If you are in that part of the city get in there for a drink.
F. B. C.
I have always always always loved the blackbird (even in their iffy moments) and I would happily recommend this place to anyone looking for an easy mid-cost dish, a cosy warm chat in the beer garden complete with heating lamps and blankets or a really yummy espresso martini with a peanut butter top.
C. K.
Life changing burgers. Went with a taste card and felt like I was robbing the place.
Highly recommended!
A. D.
Nice little pub, a quick visit while waiting for the theatre to open.

A lovely fined, if you want a lovely cocktail with a lovely modern surroundings. Iv been a few times for lunch and the menu is fairly standard pub food, burgers, fish and chips and all are lovely, but the dinner menu is a delight and really makes The Blackbird a worth while place to eat.
I had the Yellow Fish Gumbo and it was one of best things Iv tasted, so full of flavour and just makes you feel like you are eating something special. When you take a bite you just have to take a moment and savour it, to take in the all the flavours that are there.
I went for for a cocktail, stayed for dinner, and will go back for the Gumbo.

Good quality food! Had a hearty tomato soup which filled me up quite nicely. Lovely service in a quirky little pub. Would definitely go again!
T. O.
Nice place and friendly staff. Food is great, especially the pig in blankets. They also have a very nice beer garden at the back.
Z. M.
I have been sat here 10 minuets and have felt the need to review!
1) soon as I walked in, the lad who came over was on point! Took us to our seats!
2) the girl came round with water for us as soon as we sat down! Then took our order!
Fantastic! Coming back here!
M. M.
A nice bar with friendly staff, however the food was very hit and miss. The calamari starter was bland in the extreme, which the manager openly agreed with and removed from the bill. My vege burger was average, a shame as it's easy to do well, but my partner raved about the beef burger she had. Good drink selection.
N. M.
The Blackbird is a great addition to the local pub and restaurant scene. There is a decent range of beers-always something new to try, and the cocktails are a treat. It s a lovely place to spend time, be it a cheeky afternoon drink, an evening out, or grabbing some food. Speaking of the food...it's great. At lunch time there is a nice selection of sandwiches and lighter bites, the lunchtime star is the burger and handmade chips. It's a big claim, but the chips are some of the best in the whole city. Having been a few times for lunch and having thoroughly enjoyed the food, I recently visited for dinner and was pleased to discover the food is even better in the evening.
Well done Blackbird!
J. K.
Look around you will find cheaper, its ok if you want to spend 10.00 pounds and 20p for 2 pints.
A. R.
Great pub. Fantastic staff. Great pub garden. The only thing I would ask to make it perfect is a few guest ales. The range of cask/tap ales was very limited.
K.
More upmarket lounge type bar + diner. Good for chilling. Couch and bench seating in bar area. Usual Edinburgh beers and prices. Friendly staff.
C. D.
Food was good and the selection of drink was vast. Only negative was the service from the small gin hut in the beer garden. The woman serving was too preoccupied by her phone and friend to give any customer much attention at all. Best just to stick to the indoor bar where the staff were all great.
J.
Nice and calm Ambience with good food. Perfect place for couples
R. A.
Excellent service - the staff really made us welcome, and went out of their way to help when the heavens opened. And the food was delicious.
S. F.
Great drinks choice. Lovely bar staff and a really. nice outdoor beer garden. Recommended
K. B.
A really nice cocktails menu! Friendly staff and the area outside :)!
M. T.
Pleasant staff and nice beer garden, beer and cocktail great
J. S.
Former home to a less-than-salubrious old man's pub, the Blackbird is a sparkling new gem - and extremely welcome addition - to Lothian Road. It's a bar/restaurant from the Hamiltons and Treacle team (who, if you don't know, are local pros in the chilled out drink-and-dine scene) and the Blackbird has plenty of their signature quirky style (stylised blackbird wallpaper on the ceiling, anyone?), cosy ambience and top notch gastro pub grub. I went along for dinner on Friday and enjoyed beautifully cooked Asian-style salmon fillet, whilst my friend chowed down an extremely juicy classic beef burger with crispier-than-crisp fries. Lots of flavour, cracking presentation, and all served by a lovely waitress who fell over herself to be helpful and attentive. If you don't feel like eating then there's plenty of comfy-looking sofas and chairs to sit back and sup away.
Can't wait to go back - so thrilled it's my new local!
D. R.
Another old Edinburgh bar turned into a student/hipster joint And i think they have done a good job great choice of drinks Food menu looks interesting and fast friendly service,Would have given 5 stars but hated tin can my cocktail was served in for £8 expect a glass not a old soup tin
P. C.
With great decor and an awesome selection of cocktails (plus friendly staff and comfy leather couches) the Blackbird is a really good place to go with friends. If you like mojitos, try the "Victorian mojito" they do with gin, it's pretty good!
Oh! And the night I was there the music was really good! Great indie tunes!
D. R.
This place is little jewel. A wonderful range of beers, spirits and cocktails. Interesting menu and pleasant beer garden. What's not to like?
W. T.
Really nice spot! Good drink selection. Amazing food and a nice chilled out vibe! I will be back to try the beer garden in nicer weather!
n. s.
Randomly pulled in on a rainy day and stayed most of the afternoon. Really Friendly staff and good vibes!
M. G.
The meat is excellent here! It is always fresh, desired roasting and very juicy. I advise you to visit this place!
K. H.
Just as good whether you are popping in for some lunch or cocktails on a Saturday night. A fine addition to the Tollcross area, I particularly like the exposed brickwork decor which lends a relaxed atmosphere to this busy local bar.
J. L.
Great outdoor space and ambience
M. H.
Small space, but cosy. Comfy sofas and nice atmosphere. Great beer garden!
No cider on tap though.
L. D.
Fried chicken wings and pomegranate sauce
B. M.
Great menu selection, well priced coffee and a very cool venue. Really nice courtyard out the back for drinks and food too!
C. E.
Friendly and welcoming staff. Nice relaxed atmosphere. Nice looking beers but had a coffee instead as only 11am and in charge of the dog!
M. M.
Very relaxed and very good drinks (cocktails are peculiar and tasty) prices are ok, perfect service. Worth a visit to have some drinks and chatting
J. P.
Good bar with friendly staff and good music. Only gets four because the toilets stank and bins were overflowing the night I visited. Could be easily remedied.
S. J.
An unexpectedly delicious dinner. Amazing service. Wonderful menu. Great drink selection. Try it.
C. G.
Breakfast - my wife and I come for breakfast every time we come to Edinburgh no matter where we stay the walk is worth it. Wonderful service and great food. Great cup of coffee too.
N. M.
Aesthetically pleasing, found a wee beer garden out the back that's cute as, and the tunes are class xx nae student discount tho which is a shame because it's a real studenty spot :(
J. K.
Upgrading my previous 3 star review. Decent, fresh bar food, friendly staff and a good range of drinks. Can get a bit short of seating, but there isn't really much they can do about that.
w.
Great food and beers
T. M. G.
Cozy wee beer garden that gets quite wet when it rains, as gardens tend to do!
M. B.
Really nice beer garden for a summer day. Inside is average bar fair. But by no means terrible. Ok selection of beers.
R. M.
Nice staff, good beer and cocktails , and a beer garden out the back. The food looked good as well. It I did. It try it
叢.
Great place to unwind. Roomy beer garden which catches a fair amount of sun. Friendly and helpful staff. Good for groups and couples.
C. B.
Bathroom like Slytherin common room, with a reasonable choice of beers at average prices
S. W.
Great cocktails... friendly staff! Went on a Friday night so pretty busy and loud but grand to catch a drink after work!
C.
Nice little courtyard in the back although you have to go insode at 10pm. Very clean, table service only at the minute too
L. E.
Cocktails are excellent and atmosphere is lively, although not too loud. Would advise booking ahead, even for drinks, as tables are few.
a. c.
First stop in an Edinburgh pub and didn't disappoint, lovely outside terrace, you need to give it a look is worthed, even tho took me some time to find it 😁, always use your Google Maps 👍
S. C.
Beautiful little Malbec. Snack food menu looked good too. A few too many folk vaping for my liking
K. K.
Nicely decorated place with tasty cocktails and friendly staff. Had a great time there!
J. A.
Amazing dog friendly garden area, the food and the drinks were ab fab, 4* only because my skinny butt was still hungry after the waffles.
L. M.
Always lovely atmosphere, great choice of drinks, only thing I would say is food can be a little slow arriving!
V. P.
Just went in for a wee tipple. They have a cute backyard and very cheerful decor. Will try to go back for an actual meal sometime hopefully!
A.
Cool place, dog friendly, good, imaginative food.
T. D.
Lovely burger and beautiful vegan banoffi pie!!
A. C.
But pricey, i.e. fish and chips £15. The cheese burger was tasty and staff always attended
C. H.
Staff were great and made sure we had everything we needed by providing regular table service
B. H.
Weird layout, staff a bit impolite and pretentious, just average drink selection, overly busy seating. Worth visiting once.
J. M.
Nice beer garden if the sun is out, not massive inside. Good selection of drinks and the food is very good for a bar.
E. V.
Brilliant cocktails- not too many tables so prepare to stand. Drinks are worth it though. Largely.
C. M.
Very nice bar with friendly staff, nice food and a beer garden. Decent prices.
j. h.
Excellent service. Enthusiastic staff, very welcoming and all in a understated, yet elegantly colourful bar.
N.
Fabulous place, cocktails are very unique but are a bit too blend in taste.
K. M.

E. T.
Nice vibe, with modern gastro-pub style fair. Gets pretty busy over weekends. Book ahead if dinning.
G. W.
Decent bar in Tollcross, great for a wee drink after visiting the Cameo - extra star awarded for having a small beer garden out the back!
C. C.
Great little bar. Good food and a really nice beer garden for the days you want it
D. M.
It's a cosy cocktail place to hang out. Expensive and not many beer options, which takes a star off.
S. L. B.
Peng cocktails, supernice bar staff, sick choons
A. M.
New addition at the Tollcross area. This pubbish restaurant offers what can be considered good gastropub food. The deer and salmon selections could be a good option. The service is rather Tranquile :)
A. H.
Sea bass & prawn chowder was excellent - in fact the whole dining experience was brilliant including the service
G. W.
Great beer garden, decent selection of beers and my other half found a drinkable white wine.

Intriguing in a very enjoyable way, old worldly feel with some modern edgy feels and a interesting cocktail list, which makes it well worth a visit for the cocktails.
