Reviews of The Devil's Advocate
B. D.
Excellent bar with a generous whisky selection and a sufficient number of beers on tap. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The bartenders are very friendly, entertaining and knowledgeable. The food is good, but do get a reservation as the Devil’s Advocate gets really busy most days. The surroundings are beautiful too, so don’t miss this stop while in Edinburgh.

The first bar we visited upon arriving in Edinburgh and it was gorgeous. Found it through online recommendations. I would recommend any whisky lovers try the old fashioned cocktails here. Didn't try the food but smelled amazing! Came on a Tuesday evening and it was busy, managed to get a seat outside on the terrace which was beautiful, lovely vibe and overhead heaters too. The old fashioneds are lush! Really well made, perfection 👌. The ice was so clear, so impressive! Highly recommend this place.
R. F.
Great whisky options and had a good set you can buy all at once. The food was beautiful and they cater very well for gluten free food. We sat by the bar to have some drinks before we were escorted to the table. They only accept reservations so do book in advance!
T. G.
Enjoyed our stop for a drink here. My husband, who is the whiskey drinker, loved all the choices. It’s really nice inside but there is very little bar seating. I recommend a reservation if you want food and be willing to stand if you just want a drink. It’s still worth considering this option for an upscale option

Food is great and drinks are even better!
Friends had the pork belly and burgers, I had the Cid and chips. We also shared the smoked fish. All were great and well prepared.

Beautiful spot halfway up Advocates' Close, with a lovely outside patio. I just grabbed what I thought would be a small plate and a glass of wine, but it certainly was not small. Their half portion charcuterie board is definitely big enough for two, and had delicious selections. The ambiance was great, with their afterwork crowd really picking up. I sat at the bar and talked to one of their chef's,who was having a shift drink, and a bartender (who are all not hard on the eyes, that is for sure), and they gave me some tips for other places to try in Edinburgh.

Revisited this bar twice during my stay in Edinburgh. It's modern yet cozy. They take walk-ins for drinks as well as bookings for food. Located down the steps of Advocates Close from The Royal Mile, its still a bit of a secret in some ways. Great cocktail menu and general drinks list with a lot of local brews. I recommend.

A great meal cooked the way I like it to perfection for both myself & my husband. Lovely service from Emily hope I spelt it correctly. A good atmosphere worth a visit in my opinion.

Cool vibe, casual dress or smart casual seemed fine. Booking was essential. We tried for dinner at like 6 or 7pm on a Tuesday and it was fully booked. Booked for a table Wednesday in the only alot available at 6pm.
Key points: good vibe, incredible food, OK drinks, 10% serive included in your bill, VERY slow table service and somewhat aloof servers....that was the oddest part.
Price seemed reasonable and quality of everything was top notch. The food was absolutely spot on, flavours and textures and even portion size were perfectly balanced. The menu is seasonal, true to Scottish roots and incredibly fresh and seems to have a modern take on things. I would have stayed for more or seconds! How could something as simple as steamed veggies be so delicious!
We also had a couple of drinks. The cocktails I did feel were a little over the top with flavours; the flavour profiles of the drinks weren't as well balanced as the food. I somehow ended up with a double gin shot in mine so it felt very heavy on the alcohol for a 200ml glass. I tried my partner's and againm very heavy on the alcohol. Not a bad thing if thats what youre looking for but they werent an easy drink. Still nice, but not what I would go back there for. Prices were the same as other cocktails in the city in places of a similar vibe. The wine we had was good and very drinkable and again a reasonable price.
For whisky drinkers there are over 300 options apparently but it strikes me as the place where you need to know your stuff as the staff didn't seem up for offering insight.
As I said, it was busy and we were on a Wednesday night...but the service was so slow. Food came out relatively quickly though. Drinks were somewhat slow for what they were. And trying to catch the eye of the waiter was excruciating...it was almost like they didn't want to talk to you and when they did it was quite short and cold. Not rude, just not friendly and warm. Now...Maybe it was just busy but it felt like it might be just the vibe. It also took 20 minutes to get our cheque after asking for it....we finished a glass of wine in that time!
Overall, would highly recommend for modern food, comfortable seating, nice atmosphere. I'd say put up with the delays and the tenor of the staff. It could just have been an off day really. If I could, I'd go back in a heartbeat....but I'd book ahead of time!
M. K.
Nice experience in an old Scotish building. Service was excellent and enjoyed the Whiskey flights. The pork chop and the butternut Squash were delicious.
K. L.
All cocktails and food we tried there were great. Impressive interior, an industrial and rustic decor with the prominent bar shelves facing the doorway. Worth the hype.
S. H.
Delicious meals, have heard that the cocktails also are very good. The staff were professional and efficient. Cool and laid back atmosphere.
A. N.
A must-visit for anyone stopping in Edinburgh. Absolutely amazing place with immaculate atmosphere. The drinks we had were amazing and the prices are really good (especially in comparison to London). I’m definitely coming back when in Edinburgh next time.
L. B.
Could not be happier with the service and food here. We booked this amazing place for dinner on our holidays to Edinburgh. Definitely recommend the steak, garlic chips and tiramisu. Super tasty. Definitely coming back.
K. D.
Very cool atmosphere. Sat upstairs. Food was okay, nothing special but worth a visit for the location.
J.
My favourite cocktail bar in Edinburgh. Has the quintessential Old Town charm from in and outside. Small standing & bar area for walk-ins but booking recommended. Small cocktail list of classics made well & can ask for others. Negroni was excellent, as was the 20th Century.
S. M.
Everything was 10/10! Highly recommend the haggis and veal. Good wine, cocktails and dessert also. The fritters were very average but apart from that it was very very good
V. P.
An absolute must go place in Edinburgh! Not only it gives great pub vibes but it also has a huge variety of whiskies and a particular food menu for all tastes. I've been pretty impressed by the restaurant itself, the friendly and prepared staff and the quality of the food!
The place was suggested by locals and it was definitely worth it!
At the moment, I recommend to book in advance :)
B. T.
Perfect ending to a wonderful day exploring Edinburgh. Whiskey sampler went right to my head but it was fun getting there! Great food and a friendly staff. The whole experience at the Devil’s Advocate was incredible. We also loved our table location, upstairs where it was warm and cozy. Don’t miss this place if you’re visiting Edinburgh! I can’t wait to get back there one day.
A. M.
Lovely place, really good food and great staff. It's a bit hard to find it's down advocates close of the royal mile but just ask someone and I'm sure you'll find it. The menu is modern and has a good choice of dishes. If you want really good food in a lovely restaurant you can't go wrong with the devil's advocate. One word of caution is that to get to the restaurant you have to go down a few steps.
R. B.
Hidden in a back alley you find this great spot. Wide selection of whiskey and friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit for a drink or two
L.
The service and the atmosphere was great. Our server was very prompt and polite. We ordered the charcuterie board, chicken wings, and truffle fries. Out of those, the truffle fries were the best. The wings were good but they weren't actually coated in the sauce it was more on the side and I just would have preferred if the wings were actually cooked in the sauce. Would recommend checking out the Devil's Advocate, would be a great date night spot.
M. J.
We just had cocktails. Not food.
The standard is really high with really well presented drinks. The staff were courteous and professional. Overall the place had a lively atmosphere even though it was in the afternoon.
I would go back there, no hesitation. Well done!
N. G.
Friendly staff, great range of whiskey as well as well made cocktails. Comfortable seating with heating outside. Highly recommend either for a quick drink or a meal.
W. D.
Really enjoyed Devil's Advocate a beautiful space really nice staff very friendly and welcoming, if you love whisky they have a massive selection to choose from not only scotch but whiskeys from around the world also, Great beer list and and amazing cocktail menu, their Negronis are 👌 a great outdoor space that's covered and heated so no matter the weather your comfortable well worth a visit if your about Edinburgh
J.
Amazing dinner, both of us had the rib eye steak and it was cooked perfectly, great portion size with lots of chips! Great choice of beers, whisky and wine. Puddings also were delicious!
Can’t wait to go back next time we are in Edinburgh!
P. C.
Had dinner here during the fringe. Found it great value for money, with a good range of quality menu options, decent portions and great service. The venue is tucked away down one of Edinburgh's medieval side streets, but worth seeking out.
L. S.
Amazing food!! The menu is made up of unique dishes that are very inovative. The venison was stunning and the cod was equally special. Service was great, friendly and the very kind waitress was happy to recommend dishes according to our taste.
Also, there is a great atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit!
E. C.
Great bar and even better food. For all our dishes, the flavours in the dishes were paired amazingly and the chefs prepared/cooked each part to perfection. The food was👌Waitress like a police officer but I guess that’s efficiency. Thanks for a great night out.
O. J.
Visited Devils Advocate on New Year’s Eve for dinner with friends, greeted by a very friendly girl called Anna. Showed us to our table and made sure we had fresh water on the table even before taking a drinks order.
Lovely atmosphere in the restaurant, candle lit with a good soundtrack. A warm and cosy feel, just right for Old Town Edinburgh
Service was attentive and very knowledgeable. Didn’t have to wait at all for drinks order and our questions about the different drinks were answered expertly by Mel.
Menu is varied with a bit for everyone and the food was amazing. We had Wings to start that were delicious and burgers for a main course. Perfectly cooked and very tasty. A side of Parmesan and truffle fries topped off the main course. Very very good.
After dinner, the barmen were more than happy to recommend a dram for me to try, a really good Speyside.
Great food, great service.
The staff made it a great evening, Mel, Anna and Eve were all wonderful and so friendly.
I will definitely be visiting again when I am back in Edinburgh! 10/10
B.
very good fries and beer, but long waiting time
H. L.
Superb food and the best staff! We had a great evening!
L. L.
I got my favourite vegetarian haggis from here. The cod and chips were lovely too!
D. L.
Great atmosphere, really busy, staff efficient and friendly, food was hot and tasty.

Great spot for drinks. Great location. Very chic

Great little bar hidden away off the royal mile.

Perfect ending to a wonderful day exploring Edinburgh. Whiskey sampler went right to my head but it was fun getting there! Great food and a friendly staff. The whole experience at the Devil’s Advocate was incredible. We also loved our table …
D. F.
Great food and beer, but also a really nice ambience and friendly staff
S. B.
Top place for drinks - lots of interesting cocktails and an extensive whisky menu. Great service. I haven't had the food but it does look good.
S. C.
Super busy whiskey bar with helpful bartenders who’re willing to give advice on which whiskey to choose. They have a great selection. Delicious charcuterie board. Lovely vibe.
N. M.
Had a great lunch at the Devil's Advocate today. Sat outside, great covered area if it warm enough to be outside (which it was today). Food was lovely, cod was fresh and so well cooked (crispy batter) and the burger was succulent and just the right size...
Service was brilliant, so polite and efficient. Will definitly be back soon.
D. F.
Great food and beer, but also a really nice ambience and friendly staff
A. &. B. T.
Dinner for two. Welcome Greeting at the door and given a cosy table up the stairs. Drink order taken promptly and food soon after. I got a ribeye (Medium) and partner Sirloin (Medium Rare), came with chips, peppercorn sauce and partner chose the garlic sauce. Cooked to perfection and delicious. Servers all pleasant and earned their tip! Would definitely encourage anyone on the mile to pop down advocates close and get a tasty (albeit expensive) dinner :)
C. C.
Tops. I've had the lamb and missus had the venison; brilliant both of them main dishes, and great customer service. Book it on in advance online a day before as it's a busy venue. Fantastic choice of whiskeys for those who fancy a taste of a proper scotch.
f.
Everything about the place is wonderful...the food, location, staff and drinks. The £15 burger and beer is the way to go. We want to try more!
T. H.
It's a cool place to grab a drink, so it's worth a visit for the vibe. The barstaff are great and are helpful and responsive when asked about recommendations or wanting mixed drinks with specific spirits etc. They have a wide varieties of scottish gin and whiskys and I highly recommend trying a cocktail, mixed drink or a dram of something locally produced when you visit. If you are looking to eat here, I recommend booking online in advanced. I've only ever tried coming for a drink, but both times they were full and had space standing at the bar. This was totally fine for us as we just wanted to come in for 1 drink, but if you wanted to get a group in and stay longer then booking is probably much better.
C. S.
This place can be challenging to find but what a little gem it is. We had several recommendations to try this place out and we were not disappointed. Busy, but not to busy to deliver excellent service with exceptional food and drink.
Can't rate high enough, a must try for all.
A. P.
We had three different meals which were the best meals we had in Edinburgh, simply delicious. The effort put in selection of the produce and quality ingredients radiates the passion for food and service. This is a place for drinks at the end of the day or a celebration dinner either areas of the restaurant will leave you with a happy feeling.
H.
Amazing food! Lovely staff and an incredible whiskey menu. My husband loved his flight of whiskey, and the staff were knowledgeable about the drinks too.
H. S.
Lovely cocktail place. Gets really busy even on a weekday night.
B. W.
Nice atmosphere, good food, nice drinks. It's a pub, a very overpriced pub and the menus here are not updated. They had really nice options previously and that was the reason why I came in. However, I was given a very reduced menu with overpriced food options, not a large variety of vegetarian meals (both had curries). I was not asked for allergies
R. Z.
Great atmosphere, friendly staff, great drinks. Best cocktail place in Edinburgh!
T. K.
A limited cocktail menu, but well prepared. The food was excellent. Try the venison roast and any dish with cream and aubergine!
L. T.
Helpful staff in a lovely 'old world' meets trendy bar, down one of the many intriguing Royal Mile closes...great choice of lovely wines. Outside seating available too.
H. L.
Superb food and the best staff! We had a great evening!
C. C.
Phenomenal place. Food and drink are amazing. Well worth walking down the dark Alleys of Edinburgh to find.
J. S.
Beautiful food, very well made. Wide selection of craft beers. Friendly staff. The place is very popular, so make sure you make a reservation in time.
S. H.
Great hidden escape off the Royal Mile. Ideal for a dim lit date setting, cool atmosphere and great selection of cocktails, wines and whiskey. Will definitely return when I visit Edinburgh again.
P. F.
Bit cold outside but the heaters where on. Quiet busy but worth the wait. Nice little tooled away eatery
J. S.
Had a wee bit of whisky at the bar. Definitely worth the visit. Great selection, great environment, lovely staff.
L.
Cocktails great although table we were given downstairs near toilet not the best....staff very friendly and made drink suggestions.would recommend booking as was very busy Friday night.
H. D.
Brilliant selection of Whiskeys.
The venison was delicious as was the dessert.
Staff very friendly and attentive.
D. Z.
Cozy environment. Great food and drinks. Slightly overpriced.
j. k.
Wonderful restaurant with excellent food and drinks. Really liked the whisky flights. Service was very good.
B.
very good fries and beer, but long waiting time
C. C.
This place was such a lovely find! Amazing drinks selection, and got a whisky flight which allows you to have a taster section. Lovely atmosphere, great treat 🥃♥️
B. B.
Great service. Cool atmosphere. Lush cocktails.
Only been twice but great both times.
M. K.
Really fab food for 5 slightly hungover gents who happened upon the place. Lovely choice of wine, great menu and delicious food. Had sharing platters which were fabulous. Wine delicious and service great. Would defo go back. Steep steps back to the main street burn off the superb food! Epic.
Edit.....
We returned here 18 months later and were not dissapointed. Although the menu had been slimmed down due to the covid restrictions only just being lifted in Scotland the restaurant served up a wonderful meal experience again. Drinks were a tad pricey but we were certainly well fed. Defo recommend but wise to book.
d. m.
Great little bar hidden away off the royal mile.
D. L.
Fantastic experience. The food was delicious (and we tried haggis) and the server was extremely friendly and helpful suggesting scotch to try. And the interior design - exposed stone walls - make for a wonderful night out. Can’t say enough good things. Recommend making a reservation in advance.
A. Y.
Great whisky range, very quaint location and nice decor. Cosy bar area downstairs and restaurant upstairs.
We had the paired whisky and wine and it was good value, considering the whisky choices and beautifully paired with the cheeses!
V. D. P.
Good drinks but can be a bit crowded.
K.
Great food! Went here for my birthday dinner and wasn't disappointed! Lovely staff as well, could chat to them all day!
Would highly recommend this place!
E. M.
Wow! This place could not have been cooler to hangout out.y husband and I only went for drinks, but the experience was superb. The Devil’s Advocate bartenders know there stuff! Don’t be shy to go up to the bar wanting a glass of whiskey or gin, but not knowing exactly what you want. These bartenders will ask what you like and don’t, and give you a few choices to pick from. It’s obvious they take pride in their craft and I’m sure it shows in the dining experience as well. Be sure to get there early or make a reservation, because it will fill up!
N. P.
Expensive but good food, service and atmosphere. Perfect last night for our trip. Food was tasty, as it was quite dark the photos don't really do it justice. Dessert was perfect. Not too large, not too expensive.
Cocktail in pic: princess and the pea
Other drinks: whiskey experience
Food: venison with forest fruits and chocolate mousse.
D. P.
Outstanding lunch! Great beer, amazing food and wonderful service! Started with Cullen Skink which was perfect for a cold day, flaky smoky fish! Followed by a burger and fish and chips! We both loved the mains, best fish and chips I’ve had in UK! Highly recommend!
R.
Great food, good service. Something went wrong with our booking, but the solved it very well. We'll definately come back when we visit Edinburgh!
A. C.
Great venue. Fun staff. Good drinks. Good atmosphere. Decent seating area outside. It's not the cheapest but worth it. There are steps leading to it from both directions. Food looked nice
X.
Nice atmosphere, interior and friendly staff. Beautiful outdoor seating.
Speciality of cocktails, would specifically recommend Salty Towers.
Bathroom requires maintenance, not all seating is comfortable, so it’s your luck on how crowded it gets.
S. M.
Best atmosphere in Edinburgh. Excellent selection of whisky. Great food. Worth the money, especially if you are on holiday. Call ahead for reservations or expect to wait.
M. Z.
My wife and I went here for dinner since we had heard it was a ’hidden gem’ close to the Royal Mile and all its touristy spots located there. It was a bit crowded but we had a bit of luck and managed to get a table anyway (a reservation is probably advised). The food was great and so were the beer, wine and whisky. What maybe brings down the overall rating is the a bit too noisy bar just next to the dining area. Even so, this place is a ’hidden gem’ and I can recommend it if you want to get away from all the boring and tourist crowded places along the Royal Mile.
A. M.
Really great experience. Climatic, dim rooms with pleasant lights. Nice and fast service. Delicious food! I usually have some comments about the meat but not here. I teally enjoyed. Even if you need to wait for the table, its worth!
A. F.
A great restaurant and bar in old town Edinburgh, just off the Royal Mile. Down Advocate’s close, the restaurant is surprisingly big with an indoor and outdoor seating area. Candles are lit in the evening lending a great atmosphere, the food is good and the bar has a wide variety of drinks.
J. W.
Good food, but weird in Corona time all these walking routes but we had a good time here. We had to order via an app which took us a wee while, but that also went smoothly after all. Nice hideaway in a beautiful alley, we all got a bit of a Harry Potter feel there...
C. T.
My wife and I visited on our trip in the summer of 2019. Our last trip prior to COVID-19 :(. We celebrated our 36th wedding anniversary there. Service was fantastic, the food was quite good - Hot, fresh and delicious. What made the meal for us was a visit from an extremely knowledgeable bar man at the end of the meal. He came with excellent scotch recommendations for both me and my wife (still a novice at the time). He was spot on for me (peaty) and her (smooth and spicy). This made for a memorable evening in a world class city.
C. R.
Best food ever, totally didn't expect the quality and calabre of food we received! Definitely recommend to any travelling to Edinburgh!
The service is also on parr to the food!
D. E.
Great whisky and friendly staff, I love the atmosphere even on a Monday night! Highly recommended.
R. S.
This had been recommended to us and now we know why! Super friendly staff and talented cocktail makers. A really cosy atmosphere on a cold Scottish afternoon. Th
A. L.
One of the best cocktails of my life! Great food too! I wish they were in my backyard (instead of across the world) so I could go all the time and try every cocktail and every food item.
E.
Went to Miller's and Carter's earlier in the trip spent £100 on steaks and was left disappointed, here the ribeye was close to £25 and tasted amazing the atmosphere is nice, quiet and rustic staff are friendly, would definitely recommend a night here for food and cocktails.
K. W.
Gorgeous food and cocktails. Loved the Haggis starter and Cod main. Great service too
D. L.
Great atmosphere, really busy, staff efficient and friendly, food was hot and tasty.
C. S.
Good service and good cocktails with prompt requests etc
G. F.
Amazing atmosphere ,service, plates, and quite a big variety of whiskeys, scotches, bourbons and any drinks really!!! Worth a visit if you are seeking that bit extra from Edinburgh!!
V. S.
The bar staff is lovely, the drinks are delicious, and the beers are wonderful! The aesthetic of the place is wonderfully rustic, industrial meets contemporary. The only issues we encountered were the food lacking flavors. The polenta needed more flavor as did the soup of the day. I would definitely go back just for the bar though! The Under the Tuscan Sun, and Pilot Vienna Beer we're great! They also carry the Game of Thrones Whisky series!
F. C.
Named as one of the best cocktail bars in the UK and rightly so. The Devil's Advocate boasts an array of creative cocktails, extensive collection of whisky and excellent food. The decor is really tasteful and adds to the lively, sociable atmosphere. An absolute treat!
C. R.
This delightful pub is secreted off on Advocates Close... Right of the Royal Mile. Down a winding set of centuries old stairs.. this bar offers a staggering 200 varieties of whisky. The barmen were helpful and offered suggestions on a pint. Lovely place to sit and enjoy and the prices are reasonable.
A. D.
Relaxed and sophisticated vibe. Enjoyed drinks at bar and outside patio before dinner. Wonderful experience, dinner was great. My wife ordered the lamb and I had the ribeye.
P. R.
What can I even say here, the bar tender is very very knowledgeable and passionate about the very wide selection of whiskey, I don't think I'll ever have a trip to Edinburgh without visiting this establishment
V. R.
Great whisky menu! Many within reasonable price ranges (more than most places). Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Food manu is standard but good
L. B.
Fantastic place slightly hidden off the main road. Speakeasy style vibe including fantastic cocktails and amazing food! The staff were also super friendly and accommodating for us and our small dog last minute. Best bar we went to in Edinburgh! Would highly recommend.
T. T.
Superb meal there's last night with my 80 years young father and my wife. Beautiful old warehouse feel just off the royal mile. Distancing done really well . Staff in masks, but still felt cosy and welcoming. Nearly tripped up at the first hurdle. QR code accessible menu. Father - no chance, wife's phone wouldn't read it. Had to share a pdf download on my phone, very hard to read, quite frustrating as not at all phone freindly. The only issue of the night, but lots of options to make easier I'd have thought.
Food wonderful, great starters, and my main was a beautiful cod steak on garden peas and cabbage. The veg actually out did the perfectly cooked cod. No room for desserts this time.
Service was exceptional. The "new norm" can be very hard, but they were brilliant. Our server in particular never stopped, cool head, relaxed style. 10/10.
Struggle through the pdf menu and you'll be well rewarded.
J. v. B.
Nicest steak we had in Scotland so far.
Only complaint is that they don't serve it with much vegetables as usual in the UK, only a half tomato that’s it. Cappuccino wasn’t warm. Not cheap. But for Edinburgh acceptable. Cosy restaurant. Advisable to make a reservationists in front.
N. M.
Delish lunch here, fish and chips with super crispy fish, ribeye perfect...tasty sauce but ribeye flavor was superb without it. Leak, potato and pea soup-of-the-day hit the spot on a rainy afternoon. Good care from multiple of the wait staff
J. F.
Fantastic little hidden bar with a very contemporary feel. The bar staff know their way around the drinks and although the food menu might not be extensive there's certainly something for everyone and the execution & presentation is very good.
S. C.
Nice wee pub with seating both indoors and out, the staff were friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately we never tried any food and only visited for a few drinks.
M. H.
The haggis was absolutely delicious here. The staff are very friendly and no one rushes you to finish.
If you can walk up and down stairs to get here, the atmosphere and comfort you feel makes up for the exercise. Food is deliciousness.
D. B.
We really enjoyed food and drinks at this place! They have a heated terrace so it provided a unique experience of dinning outside in Edinburgh :) Def recommend to try the fish platter and all of the beers!
M. W. (.
The whole dining experience was excellent. Cocktails were lovely. As were the starters and the main course. We shared the Lamb and the Venison. Both unreal. Will definitely return next time we're in Edinburgh. Thanks.
T. O.
Brilliant cocktails, knowledge able and friendly staff! Only got to sample the drinks but food looked good. If you want to drink on the heated balcony you need to book a it gets busy
J. G.
Excellent pub and restaurant featuring some very fine and unusual whiskeys. Make a reservation for the restaurant or take a chance on bar seating.
F. X.
Great food with nice presentation and flavourful combinations. Also had a nice candlelit atmosphere as I was there on a winter's eve. Tucked neatly away from the hustle and bustle of the royal mile. Better than your standard restaurant but also pricier.
M. m.
Excellent food and huge choice of whyskies
J. C.
Honestly ate one of the best burgers in my life in there which I really didn't expect. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff.
R. I.
Lovely place. Friendly, pleasant staff. Scrumptious food and delightful cocktails.
We brought our young child for a 5:45pm sit down, reserved. The staff were accommodating and engaged with us and our child. Very pleasant, would come back on that basis alone.
The food was delicious, we had the haggis bon bons - probably my favorite! Lightly breaded and flash-fried, melt in your mouth texture. The smoked fish, cold and hot, was subtle and flavorful. (So good that our daughter ate most of mine, ha!) The smoked fish patê was creamy with a sharp smoke and excellent on the bread.
My spouse had the "Something, Something Sour" and the "It'll Come to Me." I had Macallan and Highland Park.

Oh wow! What a wonderful place for a boozy meal in an atmospheric candle lit setting. We had lunch here - I had salmon and crab cakes and my partner had crispy fried polenta with wild mushrooms. I paired my lunch with a flight of ‘Smokey beast’ whiskies. food and whiskies were both delicious and it was such a great respite from the sleet and wind outside.
C. W.
Lovely atmosphere with friendly staff. Good portion sizes considering the high end yet relaxed feel of the place.
G.
Really nice bar hidden away. The decor is great, quite trendy. Really good cocktails and the food was top notch.
J. B.
What a cool place! The atmosphere is so neat and the cocktails are amazing. The service is great as well! Our server, Alan was so friendly and helpful; he even gave us suggestions for other places to go that we might like. Will definitely be going back every time I’m in Edinburgh.
D. A.
Delicious drinks and great service!! A friend recommended DA to me and the family wanted to try it out. GREAT experience!! Top quality food and the outdoor seating was very comfortable. PERFECT OLD FASHIONED, for your whisky lovers!
B. P.
Oh gosh, you've gotta visit this place. Amazing atmosphere, great food, top notch service. They also offer great Scotch tastings....
H. V.
Great atmosphere and friendly staff. I had the fillet and it was amazing. They have an extensive collection of whiskies. This was the best meal we have had since arriving in the UK. We highly recommend a visit.
E.
Great setting and decor. Large whiskey list with some cocktails also available. Dont drink too much though as it's a long walk back up the stone steps to the main road ;)

We visited the Devil's Advocate recently with family visiting from England as we had heard it was a lovely pub with a great atmosphere. The young girl who served us was lovely and so helpful and our drinks arrived promptly. The only issue we had was when one of our party tripped on the step, which is just outside the door leading to the terrace, narrowly missing hitting his head on the table and hurting his knee. The member of staff (young guy) who was there at the time couldnt have been seen to care less and when we pointed out there was no sign to warn people of the step he pointed and replied there's one over there! This was attached to the door for exiting the terrace so unless people are capable of seeing round corners I doubt very much this sign would be of much use. He then walked away without even asking if our friend was OK and we were quite taken aback by his rudeness. When the young girl returned and saw us checking him over she asked what had happened and was he OK. Our friend is in his 60's and had only had a couple of drinks with a meal and was quite shaken by the incident. Unfortunately this tainted what was otherwise a great night but was to some degree saved by the attitude and professionalism of the young girl who served us.

Super impromptu pop in for a couple of glasses and a nibble, lovely cosy venue, super foh team made a lovely mid afternoon stop off. Will be back to enjoy more
u.
Great spot for drinks. Great location. Very chic
M. S.
One of the top bars in Edinburgh in my opinion. Fantastic range of drinks. Very accommodating, informative and friendly staff
m. h.
Started a bit rough with a hardent hostess, and turned out to be a brilliant place with great drinks and knowledgeable friendly stuff.
C. B.
Amazing food steaks were beautiful, pricey drinks but they were lovely and gave a good kick first time visiting Edinburgh the service was lovely.
G. V.
Me and my friend were looking for a nice bar with young people and found this. Nice atmosphere with jazz music as a background, quite many people, and affordable prices (Gin and tonic was only around £3.50). Not many seats for people who came only for drinks though.
M. E.
Great atmosphere, loved the candlelight and music. Great staff too and the food was devine
S. E. E.
Incredible service and cocktails. A must visit!
I would highly recommend this bar to all visitors. The range of liquor is second to none and all of the bar staff are extremely knowledge and can recommend various cocktails and drinks to suit all budgets.
I went with friends and had the pleasure of being served by Javi from Barcelona. He made us a variety of drinks which were all fabulous. All the staff appear to love their work and the atmosphere is relaxing and cosy. It's nice to visit a place and feel welcome and know that the staff are happy and want you to enjoy your time!
10/10
D. F.
We went here for a whiskey tasting and stayed for the amazing food. Probably the best weve had in Edinburgh.
R. B.
Nice restaurant which serves a small variety of very good dishes.
There specialty is mashed potatoes and they have a range of recipes based on it.
Vegetarian & vegans friendly.
R. M.
Delicious cocktails and fun vibes in an interesting location. Also very happy to adapt/customise drinks.
T. F.
Such a fun place!! Great drinks!!! Just a little walk off of the Main Street. I would go again!!!
D.
I'd pay a lot more for those type of dishes back home. Great drinks, great food and beautiful presentation. Neat little area at the bottom of Advocate's Close.
C.
Great bar with outdoor space and a really nice vibe. A little hidden away so good for escaping from tourists during spring and summer. The staff is great and the drinks are always well made.
H. T.
Poached pear dessert is delightful.
P. H.
For excellent. Whisky selection interesting. Really enjoyed lunch.
G. G.
It's very good, went twice, but the second time the soup was cold to start with, but inside the bowl was scalding hot. Not sure how occurred, but caught my girlfriend by surprise and burnt her throat and mouth.
Steak and chips, was just that, great but I can't explain, I can go to any pub and get steak and chips. Nothing wrong just fell short on the experience for what it is.
M. B.
Good discrete place off the Royal Mile. Just had a couple of drinks outside on the terrace, but good enough without a booking. Maybe for a dinner it might be worth it to book in advance. A bit understaffed at the moment to get second orders out the bill, but apart from that, good place.
J. v. z.
We only had a cocktail here because They were so busy. And rightfully so because they are great. The drinks were amazing, the service was good, there selection of whiskys were mind boggling. Loved it
M. S.
Nice bar, good restaurant! Nicely tucked away from the main throughfares
C. T.
Loved it! Located in a great spot, tucked out of the way and full of atmosphere. The food is excellent, beer cold and staff great. Will certainly go back next time we're in Edinburgh!
B. “. C.
Amazing food, but service was mixed and apparently out of many of the whiskey flights.
Service fee is automatically added to the bill, which is always a tad shady as it shames the customer if they don't think they have received good service. Am of the opinion that if it's automatically added, it's not a tip it's a tax.
F. B.
Very nice place. Good beers and good selection of whiskeys. Excellent chips/french fries. Dinner was alright. Overall a solid place for a drink and chips.
E. D.
Food is great... Step outside the regular fish and chip shops and you'll be rewarded
R. W.
Good food and drinks. Best to book
A. R.
I always judge a place in the first instance on how eager I am to return. The decor is great, the staff are excellent and the food is superb. Yet for some mysterious reason, its not a place where I would immediately suggest in going.
M. a. G. B.
Delicious food and incredible service. Fabulous value for money too.
P. F.
Amazing atmosphere, food was outstanding. Nice place to visit
M. B. (. E. m. E.
The venison was simply wonderful, and the peas and onions were a great accompaniment.
A. J.
Truly excellent and unique cocktails created with a broad and exciting collection of spirits, including a vast back catalogue of whiskeys. Very pleasant atmosphere fit for conversation. Top-notch service.
B. L.
Lovely cocktails and great atmosphere. It was very busy but they squeezed us in by the bar. The outdoor terrace was lovely last time we went and had heaters.
M. M.
Lovely bar! Very accommodating with cocktails and wonderful staff.
J. O.
Charming cocktail/beer bar with great music and ambience. The staff was friendly and helpful. They have a food menu, but we didn't have a chance to eat while there.
R.
Excellent food and environment! The selection of whiskeys (scotch and worldwide) is amazing. The wine list is also great!
J. F.
Great whiskey flights, cocktails and food. The roasted cauliflower was to die for and the steak was delicious.
S.
Great atmosphere, amazing charcuterie board (the oatcakes!), very boozy cocktails! Get the tiramisu.
We just had a bit over an hour in Edinburgh between trains and this place right next to the station was an ideal spot for quick boozy brunch.
S. G.
Great service this evening. Dutch colleague loved it and location. Even charged my phone for me, lovely!
J. M.
Best negroni of 2019 for me. Bartender was amazing, 1 large ice cube. 😍 How a cocktail should be!
A. S.
Amazing atmosphere and great cocktails but food was underwhelming and way too oily and heavy.
J. F.
Great little bar tucked away...
Even though they were fully booked, they managed to find me a seat on the heated terrace.
J. K.
Very good, nice staff. If you go for dinner, make a reservation. Highly recommend place to visit
J. K. K.
Nice food and service, music is awesome
C. N.
Visited for some cocktails at the weekend, was cosy and staff very friendly. Cocktails were yummy but not a lot of choice many contain either whiskey or gin but we still had a great evening sampling the others. Thank you!
R. K.
Wow what a cool spot tucked away on advocates close in Edinburgh. The food was amazing and the service was great. Would Higley recommend this spot and it seemed like a resoveration would be a good idea during the busy lunch and dinner hours.
R. O.
Great looking menu and a stylish bar/ restaurant in the heart of Edinburgh.
Along one of Edinburgh's famouse stair alleys just off the royal mile, this is a very smart place with a fairly large heated terrace and a cosy interior.
I had thd haggis starter, which was special, and a jacobs ladder for main along with several pints of Neckoil. The missus had perfectly cooked steak served with hand cut chips and washed down with a lovely Merlot.
We had luckily bagged a nice boothe/nook/snuggle upstairs for dinner then headed out to the terrace to finish drinks, however the terrace shuts at ten pm so one of the waiters kindly found everyone seats before ushering them back in, which was a nice touch and indicative of the professional, friendly manner show in this upclass joint.
I strongly recommend you reserve for dinner here if visiting Edinburgh!
k. y.
Oh...love this place. Had a such a wonderful time whiskey tasting. Very lovely staff! Easy to get a booking!
D. B.
What a great venue. Staff super friendly. Bar staff very knowledgeable with the different whiskeys. 👌 the food was delicious. I'll defo be back again
K. H. M.
Very cool bar 👌 it was packed with people around 5pm on a Friday (maybe not a surprise for a bar...). But the cocktail was tasty and the vibe is good in this bar. 🍻
J. I.
Excellent food, great beer, attentive staff. Great experience
M. S.
Awesome atmosphere and the best food we had all week. I highly recommend the smoked fish appetizer tray.
R. M.
Great bar for cocktails and drams worth visiting while at the royal mile.
R. C.
Favourite place in edinburgh that came very highly recommended by several sources. Bar staff were extremely knowledgable and picked everything i drank for me. Just tell them your preferences and enjoy their suggestions. Didnt eat here but the food was reasonably priced and looked great!
A. B.
Several years ago I had the best burger I'd ever eaten here, along with the lovely and bewildering experience of the mismatched menus, it became a feature of every trip to Edinburgh since. I've been less enamored in recent years, but I wonder if that's more me than the Advocate, no drop in quality or charm to speak of.
S. L.
From the drinks menu to the food menu, you will not be disappointed! Beautiful settings in the old town of Edinburgh, this venue offers amazing food cooked to perfection. The bar has so many whisky options and a team full of knowledge, I fully recommend and is in my top 10 to visit.
M. M.
Situated in a the Advocate's Close, the Devil's is a must in your culinary journey through Edinburgh.
Every plate i've ordered was gorgeous and deserved every penny.
Also the staff was very kind and i can surely say that the people of the devil's make this place really better .
Very reccomanded: Book a table a couple of days before your visit
C. P.
The cocktail list and whiskey flights are works of art.
Really, someone put some thought and artistry into the drinks, the names, the stories. That same attention to detail and art goes into everything here. Try it!
M. t. b.
Amazing steak! Took us in last minute was so lovely of the staff
J. R. P.
Best selection of, well, anything alcoholic? Fantastic bar team, great knowledge and they even do food!
Just visit for yourself and find out!
S. D.
Nice and atmospheric place. Even though it was pretty busy we didn't wait for table to long. Impressive list of local whiskey and very tasty food .
S.
Great service, good good and even better whiskey!
A. O.
Spent a great afternoon here. The haggis and chicken wings were excellent and I recommend the Pilot Vienna Pale from a local brewery in Bonnington. Service was friendly and efficient. The restaurant is tucked away in a close between Cockburn St and the Royal Mile and is well worth a visit
T. H.
Excellent food. Brilliant atmosphere, attentive staff. Had a lovely evening here.
D. O.
In the spirit of a happy cow gives you better milk.....that burger belonged to a VERY happy cow. The bacon came from a pig that could not have been happier.
M. C.
Had curry fish, burger, trout appetizer, and a whiskey flight for lunch. Excellent food, service, and atmosphere.
c. c.
Very nice spot. Very good and accommodating staff . We came without reservation and we got seated . Very cool bar and great location.
M. T.
Cocktails are mostly whiskey based and reasonably price around £9 each. Service was good and the foid was fresh and yummy.
A. L.
Excellent cocktails. Excellent ambiance. Not fond of the stairs, but only because I'm lazy.
R. E.
This a bar not to be missed. Pretty good food out back, super cool interior and a superior whiskey selection.
D. B.
Only went in for drinks but they serve excellent cocktails & have a huge selection of alcohols. Such a nice little place.
A. L.
Given the hype, we expected gleaming service as tasty cocktails. Unfortunately, the cocktails were pretty underwhelming and overpriced. Servers were friendly and the atmosphere in the bar was nice.
I. B.
Really great food and service! Pub has a nice vibe and great outdoor space. Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch here. I recommend the wings and haggis! So delicious!
R. S.
Good restaurant in the heart of Edinburgh. Team was helpful and friendly. They offer veg haggis and the main course was good.
J. W.
Favourite Bar In Edinburgh. Hidden gem. Great terrace area..and dog friendly
E. S.
Lovely atmosphere and fantastic food!
M. R.
Extremely pretentious little bar but nice pint. Thank goodness I'm attractive ...
A. A.
It’s a must visit restaurant and bar while in Edinburgh in a small Allie, but do not forget to reserve before going to secure a decent table specially if more than two
S. D.
Absolutely stunning venue and the food was great. Had an Old Fashioned(cocktail) and it was perfect, so just kept ordering more and more of them.
Friendly, helpful staff. Track and trace, menus and payment all done contactless. Looking forward to going back post covid so we can feel the atmosphere a little more and appreciate the building properly.
K. O.
A bit disorganised at lunch, but a decent but a decent burger on the lunch offer with a drink for £15.
J.
Lovely Cheese & Charcuterie Board!
R. M.
Very good food and drink, highly recommend this place.
K.
And amazing spot for a cocktail, glass of wine, or a meal. Such a warm atmosphere hidden in one of the alleyways off of the main drag downtown. Such a quaint spot & an incredible find!
A. W.
Great selection of beers, wines & spirits in convivial trendy setting! Well worth a visit.
K. M.
Lovely first visit for lunch. Great service, ambience and value for money . Tasty food ! A hidden gem .

Drinks, staff, atmosphere all tip notch. Couldn't fault it one bit as far as I'm concerned it is one to go to
G. Y. T.
nice food good selection of drinks.
k. w.
Always like to visit here when in Edinburgh to taste some of the huge range of whisky they have. We ate here one afternoon and had pork belly which was extremely tasty.
Z. T.
Great food and craft beer, wide choice of whiskies to choose from.
P. H.
Fantastic whisky selection, and you can get some nice flights. Food is excellent, too.
s. m.
My favourite over priced bar in Edinburgh. The eerie location is worth the drink prices
J. F.
Great atmosphere and good selection of whiskey's
A. G.
Good food and service, nice location. very good value for money. I had the fish platter for one and enjoyed lots of salmon. Would recommend, reservation required.
A. G. V.
My ultimate favourite bar… first bar I found while visiting Edinburgh and always go for one drinks when ever I am there.
Haven’t found a bar as good vibes as this one
F. B.
very tasty food but we waited a very long time for food.
E. K.
Great atmosphere, loved the little cubicles and low lighting. My cosmopolitan was lush.
L. W.
I got one of the more basic / beginner whiskies (sorry, I don't remember which one exactly) and boy was it a great whisky! Even though I don't have much experience, it beats what I've drank in Canada and the USA. It tasted good, but was still quite strong! I had the crispy black haggis as a starter! And boy was it better than I thought, the outside was deep fried so that's where the "crispy" came from. The inside actually tasted quite good, even though I was expecting something gross and nasty, but they seasoned and cooked it really well here, and it exceeded my expectations! For the main, I had the Tweed Valley burger, and boy, this was one of the best burgers I've ever had. It's super juicy, tasty, delicious and greasy, but the good beef kind of grease. Everything about the burger was good, the bacon and the bread, just everything. And the chips were so delicious. They were freshly made chips and so fluffy with great texture - salted and fried perfectly! This restaurant is so good, I'd definitely recommend. And when I'm back in Edinburgh, I'd love to try this place again! So far.. Love their foods!!
T. S.
Great cocktails, great whisky selection, cool staff who share info with layman punters without making them feel dumb for not having their level of expertise. Good tunes, good fitout
N. G.
Food and atmosphere fab worth a visit if you are in Edinburgh
M. K.
Great pub right near the Castle and Royal Mile. Fantastic beer and Scotch selection in a fun, casual, and lively atmosphere. It's off the beaten path which makes it a great find. There's a two story tall bar area and cozy dining area. With small number of dining tables, it's best to make a reservation. The food is good for a pub with lots of options.
C. B.
Absolutely delicious and fantastic service, the atmosphere is outstanding! Loved it😊
B. F.
Great food, nice atmosphere, lovely staff. Need to make reservations in the weekend.
G. O. R.
Great place. Friendly and helpful staff, great beers on tap, good food. Can recommend lamb and lentils, delicious.
R. C.
I love bringing people here.
There's a bar section with a few seats if you aren't going for food, which is where I usually just stay.
The selection of drinks here is incredible. Whiskies from all over the world (they even do whisky cocktails which are pretty great), and a great selection of other drinks too.
The atmosphere is lovely and warm. It's usually quite busy - it's a popular place and understandably so.
A. F.
Fantastic service from the staff, they were great, the food was excellent as well, personal service delivered professionally.
m. c.
Great bar, definitely worth trying to get a seat on the terrace which has covers and heaters.
Staff were very helpful and nice
A. V.
Wonderful experience! ❤️ Amazing drinks, atmosphere, staff and bartenders! 👋🏼 Especialmente Javier 👋🏼
D. C.
Nice bar, great drinks list. Bar staff very friendly and happy to offer advice.
B. T.
Nice place. Its situated Down advocate close and has two floors. The ground floor is a cocktail bar and the upstairs is a restaurant area.
The place has a nice ambiance and good service.
The menu looked good but the delivery was disappointing. It was over seasoned in salt. It wasn't just my food my friends stake which looked perfect tasted of only salt. My fish curry also just tasted of salt, even over the spice. No one really enjoyed their meal and we all left very thirsty.
Service was good though and provides us with ample water.
Would be tempted to go again if they have addressed the salt issue.
M. O.
It was fine, service was a bit slow but cocktails were nice
J. W.
Went on a quiet Sunday evening- cheery and attentive bar staff who had the time to recommend different whiskies to us (obviously know their stuff!). Really stylish bar and good music, wish we had found earlier during our trip. Worth noting that it's only accessible via steps.
D. P.
Amazing atmosphere and food, very friendly and helpful staff
N. B.
Great bar hidden gem
L. J.
Popped in early evening without a reservation to dine alone whilst on work trip. The wait staff were friendly, accommodating & unobtrusive. Had the lamb neck fillet, it was cooked superbly & went beautifully with a glass of the malbec. Highly recommend & will definitely be back next visit to Edinburgh!
K.
Great stakes. They have lunch menu until 17:00 and then it changes 5 to evening menu.
Friendly staff.
t.
Another fantastic Edinburgh bar. HUGE selection of whiskey, some fine beers and nice cocktails. Friendly staff who knew the menu well and all types of customers. The coffee flavoured beer was great and too full to eat but items coming out looked and smelled good.
J. D.
Nice location, good food and a great selection of whisky.
T.
Really lovely bar. There's an old feel to this bar, great location. The lady who served us was really nice and friendly.
Visited for drinks only and sat outside, really nice space although small, it was perfect. I would say there are sections in the bar I would class as cosy and intimate. It's a nice place for hanging out / dining with friends, it's an all rounder and definitely worth a drink or two when in Edinburgh.
Looking at what customers ate, the food looked amazing, but cannot comment.
A. F.
Great environment with some skilled bar tenders. They were more than happy to make us some custom mocktails as my partner was pregnant and I also wasn't drinking at the time. They tasted so good, and we never felt like we were missing out.
E. G.
Great vibe here. Unusual range of cocktails.
Really enjoyed my evening here.
W. o. F.
The location is sweet, the deco is good and drinks are great. Its definitely great to pass by for a few drinks in Edinburgh.
D. H.
Service was good, drinks arrived quickly. Venue was clean and well presented. Cocktail menu was classic with some unique.
A. A.
Excellent cocktails! Especially loved this place since we are Sun Devil's from Arizona State University. Go Devils! #EverydayImDevilin
J. T.
Amazing food, great atmosphere, and wonderful staff! My husband and I went here on our last night in Edinburgh and we couldn't have chosen a better restaurant to end our trip with. I had made a reservation for a later time, but we wound up getting there earlier than expected and they were very accommodating. Both our meals and drinks were very good! We can't wait to come back on our next trip.
W. L.
Recommended by bartender in London. Great whisky flight — I got the “I Barley Know Anything.”
J. M.
An extensive whisky menu and great cocktails. Lovely, brief local draught beer menu. On a quiet Sunday afternoon, slightly rushed service and a couple of mistaken orders but nothing untoward. Absolutely recommended.
K. Y.
My husband and I came here just for a post dinner drink for our first night in Edinburgh. The location is very unique and the interior has a cool vibe, although it was extremely busy and somewhat difficult to appreciate. We were able to have our drinks on the outside veranda, which was a lot less noisy and a fun little spot. We decided on a menu-set flight of Scotch's so as to break out of our whisky comfort zone. Even though we definitely did not enjoy every dram, it was a fun experience broadening our whisky tasting palette.
P. L.
Absolutely fantastic restaurant, I have been coming here over the years whenever I visit Edinburgh, it now seems like no trip to Edinburgh is complete without a visit.
- Very happy to accommodate a baby and a pram (though you have to get there first which meant carrying the pram up quite a few stairs first (Edinburgh is NOT wheelchair friendly)
- Staff are friendly and chatty
- Staff are always very knowledgeable about the food and options.
- There is always locally sourced fresh food.
- The cocktails are always innovative and tasty.
- There is an almost overwhelming choice of Whiskey, are a price range for everybody.
C. B.
Awesome place. Good food and drinks.
L. B.
Excellent restaurant off a little staired alley in Edinburgh between High St. and Princess. The food was amazing. Even the soup was exceptional. The staff was very friendly. Service was quick but not rushed. We got great advice on whiskey. We did not partake of the haggis starter here but the group next to us did and they said it was excellent. It's a small portion so a great way to try. I'd recommend a reservation.
J. C.
Good place with a great atmosphere. The bar downstairs is really nice for a few drinks, and the restaurant upstairs has a good atmosphere. The good was great as well, particularly the haggis starter.
The wine selection is fantastic, and the staff are very helpful with any pairings.
We did have to wait quite a long time for our pre-booked table, but we got a free bottle of prosecco for our trouble, so that made up for it. I'd definitely come here again, and would recommend it to anyone visiting Edinburgh.
B. Z.
Really cool little pub. Nice inside. Great beers available. Garlic chips were absolutely delicious.
Dog friendly as well. Chef even gave my friends dog some turkey (with her permission or course).
M. d. V.
Fabulous, excellent food. Reservation recommended !
D. S.
An absolute gem, definitely worth a visit whilst in beautiful Edinburgh
A. G.
A lovely off-the-beaten-track cocktail bar. The whisky selection was incredible and the cocktails too! We had margaritas and also a gin based cocktail and it was delicious. The staff were also very accommodating and friendly, by giving us blankets when it got a bit cold but we wanted to stay outside. I will be going back next time we’re in Edinburgh!
T. D.
Damn good.
I stopped in for dinner and was blown away. Excellent food, though a smaller menu with tremendous service. Would recommend to anyone coming into town.
M. O.
Sophisticated bar, tucked away off of the busy Royal Mile. Nice cocktail and whisky selection. Generally fairly busy on Friday and weekend nights, but there is usually room to sit out on the terrace (and they have blankets if it's cold out!)
FYI They don't allow under 18s in (even on the terrace) unless you are sitting in for a "full meal" so don't expect to pop in during the day with your family unless you have a reservation for a meal.
A. H.
Great service, excellent food. A real hidden treasure
S. A.
Have been a few times and love it. The setting and the mix of ancient architecture and modern bar feels very 'Edinburgh'. Accessed via an atmospheric 'close' (a steep alleyway with steps) that connects the Royal Mile to Cockburn Street below, you enter into an old Victorian pump house and face an impressive bar that is impressively stocked. There are tables upstairs and a few cosy booths just off the bar. The cocktails are excellent and the staff friendly but professional. Only eaten there once - had an outstanding lamb dish and my wife's steak was also excellent. Main courses are priced mostly at around £20-24 with side dishes extra. Cocktails around £9. Nowhere this good in central Edinburgh is likely to be cheap! Not a huge space so book a table.
A. O.
Awesome food, all good service drinks atmosphere highly recommended. Busy place can see why..
D. M.
Great restaurant, can get busy, so would recommend a booking. Drink prices are fair and the bar tenders are willing to help with choosing a cocktail which appeals to you. Good atmosphere, great staff and prices are fair considering the quality fare on offer.
G. M.
One of my favourite drinking holes in the city. There's a good range of delicious and different ales, Vienna Pale and the Blonde my favourites, and there's always a vibrant atmosphere. Usually very busy but sometimes you luck out with a table. All the staff are friendly and efficient too. Excellent.
V. A.
The food was average even underwhelming, and you can find a better value/taste for money elsewhere. Burger was £15 and pork ribs were £14.
E. R.
Seriously, this place is an alcoholic's fairytale come true. SO much Whisky......SO much Gin....SO much alcoholic goodness all under one roof. Such a great location in Edinburgh with an AMAZING view of the city as you descend Advocate Close.
The bartenders are amazing. They are true chemists/artists as they concoct your drinks, whether it's something off the menu or something tailored to your specific taste. The place is high-energy and hopping and you'll find yourself amongst a crowd of discerning drinkers...naturally I felt right at home.
The prices are very reasonable as well, and I can honestly I paid less here and for a MUCH more creative and tasty drink than at swanky high-end bars in Manhattan.
Go Edinburgh!
And go, Devil's Advocate!
S. M.
We only visited for drinks so can't comment on the quality of the food. The selection of beer was good, with none of the usual brand names available. Bar staff are happy to let you taste the beers before you commit to a full pint! Overall nice setting and a good place to enjoy a few drinks.
J. V.
Worth the walk up the steps of Advocate's Walk, themselves laden with the atmosphere that comes from dark stone and historic buildings.
Make that walk and what you'll find is a split level blend of new and old, warm lights, tall ceiling, upmarket look, but with friendly staff.
A smart restaurant / bar where the spirits on offer go beyond the norm, and the beers are diverse. It was certainly busy when we ate, and I'm sure a reservation would have been sensible, but we were a party of two so they fit us in without a fuss upstairs. The food was excellent and in my opinion the portions were well judged, it wasn't pile it high pub grub, but that wasn't what we were looking for, nor what the impression of the place gave.
We didn't try the cocktails, that's not my thing, but plenty were doing exactly that. Downstairs looked to have a series of booths / snugs, but we sat on the mezzanine and it was busy but buzzing.
One last thing? The staff were great, it was busy, they were busy, but they went beyond efficient and were friendly, recommended food, drinks, and were ultimately what made the visit, so thank you!
K. D.
Amazing atmosphere. Great wine, cocktail & whiskey selection (over 300 whiskeys!). Food was innovative and delicious, however portioning was a little on the small side. Regardless, I'd definitely go again next time I'm in town.
O. J.
Nice place! Tasty food too
D. G.
I love this place a lot, but be warned, it's quite expensive but sometimes you just have to say what the hell. The staff are friendly, the wide drink selection good, especially the whisky, and the food always looks exceptional. Definitely worth a visit.
h. O.
Very busy place with excellent food and drinks, I would gladly come back!
J. B.
Great food and cocktails. Will be back!
A. E.
A great range, though a little pricey. Booking a table even for a drink is easy and avoids disappointment as distancing is kept up with table service only. Great to have outdoor seating well away from bustle and traffic.
D. S.
The Devil's Advocate is located on a very interesting street: the Advocates Close in the Old Town of Edinburgh. What I personally liked about this restaurant was the large collection of whiskies. If that is not your thing, the choice of other drinks is also plentiful. A nice touch is that the menu comes with drink suggestions to accompany the meals. I ordered the suggested whisky with my very tasty steak and the combination worked out really nicely. I will definitely visit this restaurant again on my next trip to Edinburgh. I would recommend making a reservation if you want to have dinner at this place.
D. C.
Wow what a great little place. Stunning food and very friendly service. Great selection of drinks. Low lighting and very cosy. If you are in Edinburgh, this is somewhere you absolutely must visit. Make sure you book in advance, we saw crowds of people being turned away on a Thursday night.
K. D.
Once located, this is a charming small bar, providing good food / tapas, with a wide selection of whiskey and beers.Great atmosphere and very efficient staff. I have now visited a couple of times and have found the food to be fresh and delicious and service to be very good.Eating tables(raised) within the ground floor bar area, with a additional seating area on a 1st floor mezzanine restaurant area.Has the feel of an Old Scottish eatery....Recommend!
D. P.
Stumbled across this beautiful pub on our weekend in Edinburgh and looking back it was the best part. What a gem! Service was fantastic and knowledge of the staff was just brilliant. We tried a range of cocktails and they were all delicious. We'll certainly be back! Thank you x
I. H.
Great pub with a welcoming staff.
J. B.
Excellent lunch, super friendly staff, and excellent selection of draft beer. The pub is just few seconds off the royal mile but enough to make all the difference and away from the hoards. The place has great character as well. I would definitely recommend it!
J. T.
Would be 5 if whiskey sours were consistently good. As us, they vary from visit to visit.
B. C.
Really cool and quirky bar. We went for a few drinks. The drinks were mainly cocktails and whiskys, with a few beers but it's definitely more of a spirit bar. The food was pretty good, but we only had starters. Really nicely presented. The only things holding this place back were the prices were a bit steep, and it was a bit cramped. This did add to the atmosphere, but don't bring any luggage if you are traveling during the day or anything.
C. K.
Absolutely fabulous meal in Edinburgh. Best meal we had in a two week trip in the U.K. I had a steak which was a quality cut of meat and perfectly cooked medium rare. Every dish was delicious--we all shared and it was fabulous. Lots of disappointing meals all trip so this was a highlight. Nice ambiance and location, will definitely go again!
E. C.
Best restaurant/bar we visited in Edinburgh.
Very helpful staff, delicious and interesting takes on menu items which you wouldn't find anywhere else. Great cocktails and ambience to boot. Had a great time here and will return when in Edinburgh again.
M. R.
Good service and excellent food. Had a variety of drinks that you can't go wrong. Will worth the visit. Highly recommend, best place we ate at while in Edinburgh. Gets busy, so get a reservation. Email if out of country, call if within.
C.
High quality cocktails, great music and an energetic atmosphere! Great spot!
B. M.
Very cool bar tucked away a little off the Royal Mile. Lots of cocktail choices with beers and wines also on offer. As we didn't eat there I can't comment on the food. Found the bar to be busy and vibrant but a little small with not a great deal of seating or areas to put your drink down. Also waited at the bar for some time before I got served. One person was busy doing a lot of the work whilst the other had his back to us polishing glasses and cutting fruit. Seemed like no urgency to serve.
J. F.
Easily the best food I had in Edinburgh, having tried some of the highest rated & recommended places in town. The sweet potato & chickpea curry was hearty & delicious, the pistachio crusted cod was equally delicious if a little smaller. 9/10 mains, sides were 8/10. Drinks were 8/10, great selection of beers, cocktails and whiskeys intelligently delivered. Definitely worth a visit.
A. G.
Nice place, good atmosphere, had fish and chips... but portion not great.. probably should have went to the chippy
Z. K.
Great atmosphere and fantastic cocktails. Recommend to everybody visiting Edinburgh.
They have an app to order drinks and food and even pay to ensure the safety during the Covid times. Suggestion is to pre-install it if you are planning on going, saves a bit of time.
A. S.
Great atmosphere plus lovely eating area upstairs. Staff very attentive and food well presented and very good. Overall, highly recommended. The barman was extremely friendly and welcoming.
R. G.
Delicious food and lovely service. We Americans were scared to try haggis, but here it was delectable — as was everything else we ordered. Great atmosphere with a fun bar, excellent cocktails and a lively crowd. We went here twice on our long-weekend trip, and would return in a heartbeat.
D. D.
Brilliant, quirky and friendly. This place has some amazing food, (the ox cheek is to die for). An amazing selection of drams, beers and wines. The staff are friendly, well versed and available. It is placed over two floors with the ground being more oriented to the pub and the first for seating. Book in advance if you want to eat (highly recommended). It also has outside seating with heaters. A nice night out with friends, family or your special someone
H. S.
Excellent hidden spot for drinks. If you want to learn more about whisky, skip the overpriced tours at the distilleries, and come here on a quiet afternoon. The bar staff are all really knowlegable and will talk you through the menu.
P. S.
Cozy bar! Good selection of beers and plus Plus: they have a dedicated menu for whisky and whisky cocktails!
A. B.
Very tasty food and good wine! The room upstairs is very loud over the festival time though. A few tables on the way to the toilet and kitchen downstairs were way quieter. It was also lovely as more secluded.
j. f.
Great whisky collection with a very knowledgeable bartender. Love the ambience. Great place to visit.
P. B.
Food was quite good. Atmosphere is trendy and fun. Lots of whiskeys and beers to complement the good food. Wait staff comes off preoccupied. The restaurant was written up in Rick Steve's Scotland your book. We were there during the festival in August and it was very busy. Reservations were absolutely necessary. At 330, they were sold out for the entire Saturday night.
J. K.
Great place, decor, ambiance and drinks are all amazing! Couldn't ask for more.
T. H.
Nice drinks. Not a massive selection
K. R.
Historical bar with fantastic interior! The extremely helpful staff warmly welcomed us tourists. A great atmosphere and cosy feel, this is somewhere I'd frequent if I was an Edinburgh local. The local beer was delicious!
J. W.
Cool intimate bar, with excellent terrace space. Knowledgeable staff & enormous Whisky list 🥃
J. P.
Great service. Delicious food which is very reasonably priced. Love the building its in too. Highly recommended.
H. W.
I'm writing this review of the Advocate only as a bar, as I haven't had the pleasure of eating here...yet.
I've been to the bar a few times now and have always had a great time- with impeccable service.
My last visit to the bar was a few weeks ago and we stepped in from the cold close outside to a crowded bar- it was 10:30 on a Saturday. We were greeted by a friendly member of staff who asked if it was just the two of us and began to lead us to a table- until he realised someone had just beat us to it. He told us to wait a moment and he went away, appearing a few minutes later and letting us know we should follow him. He took us to a table upstairs and gave us menus. This first encounter had set the tone for the rest of the night and each encounter with one of the staff was helpful and friendly.
We ordered off-menu, requesting espresso martinis which were one of the best I’ve tasted in the city…and just enough to leave you wanting to order another.
Their range of beers is good and they have a very impressive whisky selection- so I’d recommend it if you’re after some local spirit without the tourist tat.
All in all, I love this place and always recommend it as my go-to bar. I will definitely keep going back.
S. M.
The whisky selection is great and the food really good -- there are options for vegetarians. The atmosphere is also nice, but it is not a big place so don't be surprised if you have to wait for a table.
S. T.
Called in for drink and had a wonderful experience. Staff where welcoming and consistent with their service. We chose to sit outside which was extremely chilled. Perfect little hideaway for a casual relaxed drink.
L.
Wonderful atmosphere, friendly staff, fantastic drinks.
S. L.
Excellent cocktails and an awesome bar! (Didn't try the food)
R. M.
She got a cold sliced beef starter with salad was quite nice.. I got crispy haggis was absolutely brilliant served with a tomato nd apple puree.. we opted for a tomahawk steak as a shared main accompanied by potatoes, chips dips and salad was very tasty. This place loses a star due to what we both thought was a poor desert menu with no cakes or pastries .. we decided to go to a chocolate cafe instead. Tomahawk steak also a bit on the pricey side but definitely worth a visit.
I. A.
Very good food ! Nice people , all good!
N. P.
Fantastic wee bar, down the dark alleyway in Edinburgh. Came highly recommended and didn't disappoint. 2 cocktails, delicious, 2 Aberlour whisky...a'bunadh...60.8%, delicious! Great atmosphere and great staff! A+
D. O.
Lovely bar off the royal mile. Great location and it has a really nice, secret aspect about it. The cocktails are fabulous and if you don't know your different spirits incredibly well the staff are so lovely and happy to assist or recommend a cocktail after sussing out your likes/dislikes. It has a really cool vibe about it and a great atmosphere. I would recommend this place to anyone bored of the same old bars and looking for somewhere a bit different! I have only been here a handful of times but it is definitely my favourite bar t visit in Edinburgh! :)
C. M.
Hidden halfway down Advocate's Close, this whisky bar looks mysterious, stylish and upscale. The staff were friendly but forgot to place our order, meaning we had to wait a really long time for our food. The menu sounded impressive and considering the prices, we had high hopes for our food. Unfortunately both of our meals (the mac n cheese and pumpkin tart) were underwhelming, very small and rather bland. Our cocktails were also so strong that they killed the other flavours. I really wanted to like this place but sadly it wasn't great.
J.
Wow.
A trendy bar that straddles traditional and modern with a warm low-/candle-lit atmosphere. You can see why the bar staff have won numerous awards as the craft cocktails (most unsurprisingly are whisky based) are absolutely delicious. A great place and a must if you like cocktails and are around Old Town.
D. M.
A fantastic bar tucked away in the Old town on steps that lead up to the Royal Mile.
Great selection of drinks on offer. Food available too which is sort of upmarket pub grub. Great atmosphere in the place especially after work. Quite expensive but willing to pay for it as it's well worth the money.
They often have events on too such as tasting events or other interesting things so check out the website for details.
One of my favourite bars in Edinburgh.
S. C.
Lovely food and our waitress Megan was very friendly and helpful. The only slight annoyance was that the main courses were the same price. Is cross subsidising correct? However we enjoyed our meal very much, thank you.
C. W.
Amazing place, great drinks, amazingly super helpful staff. Relaxed mature environment and best of all they play Kaleo. If your coming to Edinburgh it's your number one spot for a night cap or evening drinks.
S. N.
Great beer, cocktails and wine...and beautiful haggis
C.
Can't go wrong in here. The people behind the bar can make you anything that you would like. It is hidden away up a wee lane, but don't let this fool you, it will be busy no matter when you go.
They do have a seating area to order food but I was only in for drinks.
The espresso martini was very sweet and it had a thicker, not a word I would usually use to describe a cocktail, texture than I'm used to but it was delicious.
P. S.
It’s always hard to find a place to eat with a 4 yo in tow but we took a punt and the experience was amazing. Danny went out of his way to make us all feel welcome and he delivered the same level of service all night. The drink selection with our dinner was spot on, plus he was able to make some small adjustments to our meal for our little man. I had the lamb and my wife had the pichena and we both loved our meals.
D. M.
Just been for lunch on Friday. Great interior, good service and cracking chicken burger. Recommended.
J. V. d. E.
Friendly service and absolutely delicious food. Had the lamb, it was 👌
Z. B.
Absolutely amazing food, welcoming and friendly staff. Really lovely atmosphere. Would love to go back, really made it a birthday meal to remember. Thank you!
***EDIT - We went back and it was as amazing, if not better, than before, thanks to all!
P. H.
Excellent bar for whiskey. A truly unique selection, with some really heavyweight choices. The bar staff are friendly, and will help you with your whiskey choice, and even point out other places to go in Edinburgh. Well worth a visit, a just off from the Royal Mile.
N. W.
Great and cosy place with a lovely furniture. The only thing what I would criticize is the waiter who asked us if we want to eat something. As we said yes he told us that the kitchen is already closed, so we stayed for a beer. As we saw people eating around us he just told us that they're all working here. At least we got a bowl of fries at the end :)
M. F.
Cozy little bar off Advocates Close, gets very busy though so I recommend making a reservation, especially for dinner. Walked in one night and they had no tables for 2 hours, ended up going for lunch on another day. Good wine, good food, good service.. try and get a booth for the best experience. Beef brisket was nice, fish and chips wasn't bad, worth a visit.
L. W.
This place is cool, yummy cocktails, nice food. My only grumble would be that it was so busy so it was really crowded. I felt like I was double dating with the couple next to us. Still recommend though, ensure you book a table!
T. T.
Great selection of whisky, good food pairings, and a nice patio out back to enjoy a cigar and a drink! Steph was super-helpful in getting us settled in here and also in recommending other places to visit throughout Scotland!
A. K.
A very good selection of whiskies, beers and cocktails. It has a nice atmosphere and very friendly staff.
The place has outdoor seating area with a few tables. But the bar area is not too big and the place hasn’t got too many tables inside either so reservations are recommended.
D. P.
Great little place in the middle of Edinburgh Old Town. Loved the brick walls and small private sitting areas. A wide selection of whiskies are on offer. Good beers too. Cocktails could be a bit more colourful.
L. D.
This restaurants is one of the most amazing spots near royal mile and old town of Edinburgh. It's location is a bit tricky but you should enjoy the journey of finding this hidden gems. Once you made it, this place gives you a warm welcome with the nice interior. Be lucky and take a seat upstairs which is more cozy, romantic and more separated. The menu offers a nice variety of dishes and meals are lovely cooked. Try the lamb rump or cod fillet!
RESERVATION is a MUST - better safe than sorry. I prefer this place unlike the overcrowded Rose street... enjoy!
M. E.
Very good and cosy place. Great food, huge choice of whiskey, wine, good beer and great cocktails. It's pricey, but totally worth it. You need to pre-book.
Great location in the old town. Has terrace/balcony. Very stylish place with friendly and competent staff.
The only downside I can think of is music - for some reason they play rap and pop rnb songs very loud, which don't match with the ambience of the place, but that maybe just me.
M. S.
Great for drinks and Great for dinner. The staff was friendly and accommodating.
M. D.
We were like, completely inexperienced about anything. It was nice. They helped us. Good quality. Reasonable prices. The waitress was like, my dream girl. I wish i could come here every night. And be happy.
R. B.
Picking somewhere to eat in Edinburgh is difficult with all the choices so this was, largely, a shot in the dark.
Absolutely fantastic, delicious, didn't feel overpriced and the lamb neck was quality. Tucked away in a quaint back alley we thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.
R. B.
Found it by accident when out ace list of cocktails and drinks well worth a visit
L. D.
Best customer service in Edinburgh! Very polite and friendly staff. Good food and beer. Highly recommended!
J. P.
Service was absolutely amazing and the online ordering was easy to do. Food was lovely and the drinks were very nice too.
Staff were helpful and friendly
Loved the atmosphere! Definitely recommend
N.
A great atmosphere and friendly stuff. We really enjoyed our drinks and the the decor but the food was not as good as e expected given the price. I would definitely recommend this place for its cocktails or a nice pint though.
J. K.
I love this place - tucked away just off the Royal Mile but less touristy than most pubs in that area. Great selection of whiskys and a small but high quality menu of contemporary Scottish food.
I. “. J.
I almost don't want to write this so that the Devil's Advocate remains still a little unknown, but it really is one of my favourite bars in Edinburgh. Tucked down one of the side streets off the Royal Mile, the Devil's Advocate feels like a secret den only a few privileged are privy to.
The lighting is dim, the decor is cool, the music isn't too loud and the areas to eat are either on or under the mezzanine level which really separates you from the buzz of the bar. The bar itself is pretty big and I've seen the place get quite busy on the weekend, this doesn't stop the staff from being swamped as there are usually enough on hand to get drinks or be seated at a table without much of a wait.
I haven't yet eaten there so can't comment on the food but they have a huge selection of whiskeys and a good assortment of beers and wines plus all your other bar regulars. Prices are the expected of a bar in the city centre.
M. T.
Great little bar, little being the main problem. Has a relaxed classy atmosphere with a great selection of drinks and perfect for an intimate date or a quiet chat, but if you thinking of going as a group or for food i would recommend booking. The staff are the type you would expect/hope to be behind the bar and add some great character. Worth taking the time to find it just off the Royal Mile.
M. T.
Very nice bar on a "hidden" charming location that suggests something traditional. Varied selection of scotch whiskeys if you're into that and fancy cocktails and wine if you're not. Only tried their bar so can't comment on the rest. Tends to get quite busy and crammed especially in the weekends.
E.
Are you a fan of great Whisky and food (or even Whiskey and food), if so, you have to visit this place. The design is great as is the location away from the crowds. The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable, the food is fab and of course the selection of Whisky is second to none!
M. H.
Rustic and laid-back place with whiskey tasting menus, perfect place for getting to know or exploring Scottish whiskeys
P. T.
Reception a bit officious, food over priced, nice atmosphere.
A. D.
Romantic decor, great staff, food and drinks were delicious, not too far from castle
Z. T.
Lovely and classy place! I went on a busy evening and couldn't find a seat. Told the bartenders I was there for a first date and they tried to find me a seat (even though I said it was okay, cuz it seemed quite full) and when my date showed up, they checked in on me and asked if everything was okay. So needless to say service is really great!
G. C.
Lovely bar with great drinks choice and service in a secluded spot with a nice terrace. A great option amongst Edinburgh bars
A. v. H. d. B.
Extremely friendly staff! And the best food we have ever had. Also the cocktails were great. We had the Jazz Hands👋. Next time when we visit Edinburgh we will be eating there again.
A. v. H.
It is slightly more expensive for a poor student like me, but it's definitely worth it. The steak I had just melted on my tongue, they had really interesting cocktails and the server we had was absolutely lovely! (Blonde girl from New Zealand).
Next time I'm in Edinburgh, I'll definitely return here.
F. F.
We had 5 stars expectations, but the experience was 2.5. Service was good even we were not expecting bill placed on the table before asking (Sounds like, please go). Food very average and the house wine given was acid, which we asked to change.
L. B.
Lovely space with dark wood, candles and quirky decor. Interesting cocktails, food looked good too. Barstaff were super friendly and knowledgeable. Not too busy or touristy either as slightly off the beaten track.
D. W.
This might very well be the best Fish and Chips of my life. Fantastic restaurant and wonderful staff. Don't use the Google walking directions to find it, make sure you walk down "Advocate's Close" from the "Royal Mile". my table companions had the lamb and the rib eye and everyone was impressed. A great welcome to Edinburgh, I recommend a visit!
D. C.
Soo much choice and friendly staff. Lovely atmosphere
P. L.
Very good food and nice selection of beer. Not many choices of beer and food but just enough. Nice atmosphere and very good staff. Serve food till late, I would recommend. Prices bit on the higher end but worth it.
D. M. B.
The best tomato soup ever! And the cod with chips was simply amazing. Great atmosphere and even if they are pretty well know within the tourist they are down to heart and authentic. Definitely a place to go
D. F.
Great place for a drink and dinner just off the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. Service was awesome, made us feel welcome as soon as we walked in, food was great and vibe is really cool, relaxed and yet classy. A really great experience, strongly recommended!
S. L. (.
Who knew this lovely bar and restaurant existed? I've worked on the Royal Mile for over 5 years and I didn't! Small bar and restaurant. Very tastefully decorated (think hip shed) and with good selection of drinks at bar. The staff were friendly and knowledgable too. We went Friday night and it was super busy and the restaurant was booked up but we sat for a while at a free table and were well looked after. Looking forward for the excuse to return soon!
H. W.
Hidden away up alley steps but v well worth finding. Super food includes terrific cullin skink and a fine black Haggis starter. Excellent list of malts including an outstanding peated Longrow. Super loos. Outside courtyard seating in summer. Do go....you won't be disappointed
J. O.
What a fantastic find! On a beautiful cobbled side road is this adorable bar, specialising in Whisky, Cocktails, and awesome looking beer and wine. Not unreasonably priced and the quality is so nice. Special praise to the decor and glassware they use, very trendy and stylish with the perfect old-fashioned twist. The Devil's Advocate is Highly recommended.
W. A.
Got to try it man one good place. Live upto its name and where it is just amazing. If I ever filmed a movie this will be 100 % the place I will use
A. M.
Good cocktails and steeped in history. 😁
A. W.
PROTIP YOU NEED TO MAKE A RESERVATION BY CALLING!
we called day-of on a Saturday and was given the last open table option. Also, I recommend coming down from the Royal Mile, it’s a bit closer and doesn’t involve walking up 100 steps in the dark. Okay the review:
Food and drinks were AMAZING. Pork Chops were divine and was complemented beautifully with apple sauce and apple slices. Get the truffle chips for some extra fun in your meal.
Drinks as well are great and on the cheaper end.
Overall with 2 entrees, 2 drinks and an app we came out to about £53.
e. c.
Had a fabulous meal there tonight...one of the best dinners I've had in the city. Not only do they have great food but they have a very nice selection of mixed drinks. I'd highly recommend this place for dinner and drinks!
S. R.
Loved the place, great location and vibes. Food and drinks were delicious (only place I was able to find a Bloody Mary-esque drink!)
Unfortunately the 2 times we went there over a week, were served by the same lady who got our food orders wrong both times, the second time completely forgetting to put the order in- by the time this was realised she told us the kitchen was closed to serving food to the area we were seated in. Unfortunate end to our time there as this place was otherwise amazing.
R. M.
A really good bar and restaurant just off the Royal Mile. Had the tomato soup for starter and lentils for main. Good choice of drinks.
G. G.
Order the Charcuterie or Seafood platters. Absolutely Awesome. Malbec wine is very good too.
J. R.
Stopped into the bar just to check it out. It's a very cool space and was busy when I dropped by. It's down a staircase and a bit hidden. The space has a very old feel of the Harry Potter world, but has modern touches. I would head back at some point for another beverage.
Always feel free to reach out to me on Twitter @joerazz

Great beers, great staff
O. S.
We booked a last minute table for drinks, the staff were incredibly accommodating and the service was exemplary.
I. B.
Food was really good. Service was really good. The atmosphere was great. But nothing really excelled enough to me to feel the place needs 5 stars. The whiskey list is really impressive, though.
K. A.
Super cozy and beautiful building! Food is out of this world. Perfect place for romantic date night! 🥰
M. M.
Nice experience!

With only 35 reviews, this place has to be one of the best kept gems of this city. Everything here is amazing from the interior design right down to the best wait staff. The food is out of this world unbelievable. We ordered the lamb burger, ox cheek pie and duck confit - they were all incredibly delicious and definitely something to write home about. Times like these I wish I could give a 10 star rating!
A. H.
This place is a beautiful bar hidden and perfect. The cocktails are amazing and made with pride and time. The service is excellent. Not to mention the men here are beautiful. Single ladies alert! There is a Ryan gosling looking man with a beautiful accent. *heartmelt. Cheers!
M. S.
Great drinks, great food, friendly staff, and excellent music!
G. E.
I'm unsure if American steak is higher quality or not but the steak I had for £32 wasn't worth even a $5 steak back home. For almost $40 American I expected a lot better and bigger steak than I got. The server we had was great tho kept our glasses full and was always around to check on us!
T. H.
Good beer, good service, good food.
A bit out of the hustle and bustle of the total miles, but still very convenient. Perfect for a relaxed meal.
Great outdoor seating for drinks while you wait.
R. S.
This bar is wonderful with amazing bar staff, received some very creative cocktails! The Devils Advocate has a very intimate atmosphere but the only criticism I have is sometimes it can be too much and few very crowded/claustrophobic.
I. A.
Incredible cosy atmosphere, helpful staff that make superb cocktails, great selection of drinks. Didn't eat but the food smelled and looked very tasty. Would highly recommend for couples, families, friends etc.
