What a lovely find. Seats outside with view of the beach. Great service and really friendly staff. Nothing too much trouble. Thoroughly enjoyed the food and good value too. And doggos 🐶 welcome. Ours loved the liver cake!

In a lovely spot on Portobello promenade. We sat outside in the sunshine, admired the view and people watched. The service was great- table service. The young man serving was very professional and knowledgeable. We didn’t try the food but saw a couple of very tasty looking burgers on their way to another table.

Very pleased with the design inside. Waiters was very kind. Even if we have to wait for Internet connection for card machine. Various beers to choose from. Menu is really nice. Portions could be bit bigger, but otherwise everything was tasty.

The menu was somewhat underwhelming, however there were plenty of options for kids, and phrased in an amusing way. The food was tasty, it was definitely worth the money. The plum tart was lovely, but the plums weren't peeled, so a bit disappointing in that regard. Also, canned squirty cream with it was rather poor. The service wasn't the best. The restaurant is dog friendly. There is a book swap bookshelf, which was great to see. The toilets were absolutely horrible. They were clean, yes, but the cubicles were tiny. The cubicle in the gents' toilets did not have a lock, and in the ladies' toilets the cubicles did have a latch but of very poor quality. In one, there was a large gap when the latch was in place. In another, the latch did not close properly, so if someone pushed the door from the outside, it would open - as is what happened to me. So I had to keep my foot pressed against the door to prevent it from happening again.

When possible we have for years liked coming to the Espy for breakfast or lunches. It works well with the kids and especially when we can get a window seat to see the world go by, literally and taking in the stunning views. The team were great and really accommodating, despite not having a booking they welcomed all four of us in. We were pleased to once again get our favourite table. The menu has also changed a bit over the years, but still a fantastic choice and I'd say something for everyone. Coffees are still amazing and just wish we had time to visit more often. Thanks to Amanda (the owner) and her team for continuing to work hard to serve us all 👏

Food was really nice. Service was frequently slow with the server we had. Took nearly 10 minutes for us to get change from the bill. 2 person table was barely large enough to fit both menus, but was still having space taken up by the condiments/cutlery box as well as a candle and flowers, which made space for plates and drinks quite tight. The gents toilets had one cubicle, which could not fit someone larger than average, so I had to use the accessible toilet. The toilet door also had no lock. I learned from my wife that the female toilets had latches, however the cubicles she tried either had a gap that she could see through, or the latch wouldn't keep the door closed if anyone tried to push on it (which happened). TLDR; food was really nice, but rest of the elements of the place have put me off returning.

Was really disappointed, started off great, food menu and drinks sounded good. Very nice mulled wine. We ordered starters and mains. Starters took a while but we were patient as it was quite busy but then had to wait over half a hour for our mains while other tables that had come in way after us were already finished with their mains. When the food did come it was delicious and rh atmosphere was fun.

We turned up without a booking. The place was already heaving. We host gave us a table right away! Great service. The food was also great. We had pea and spinach soup followed by fish and chips. We sneaked a portion of chocolate fudge cake to complete our lunch. We couldn't fault any of it. Compliments to all of the staff. Came here after walking down to the beach. On a trip to Edinburgh for a few days. Nice enough place. Just rather expensive due to the location. I loved the home made lemonade it was just rather steeply priced. Had a breaking bad burger and it was nothing super special. It's still worth a visit but just be ready to spend a decent amount of money.

Very seaside place. Inside the ambient is really nice. The bun with seafood and chips was delicious. If you are in Portobello you should definitely go and relax there. For 50p we also had a good portion of liver treats for our dog :)

We came here with our two labradors who LOVED their home made treats. The location is fab, right on the promenade, views over the water, and an amazing chance to people watch! The food was excellent (my party had burgers and sea bream) but the service wasn't great. Very, very slow (we were there for two hours in the end) and it took quite a while for them to take our orders. It was very busy and the staff mentioned they were short staffed, but it wasn't ideal. If we'd gone on a quieter day, I'd probably rate it a four or a five because the food was genuinely very nice, but they were let down by the service. Worth trying.

I have always loved going to the Espy, although we don't get there as often as we would like as we don't live nearby. However, met a friend for lunch on Sunday and as usual, food was lovely and service was fantastic and for that I would give it 5 stars. However, I was seriously put off my food by the dirt and dead flies on the window ledge, this was not just from the previous day, it had obviously not been cleaned for weeks. The toilets also left a lot to be desired, definitlely needing a good clean. It's such a shame because it's a fab place. Come on guys, bring it back to its usual standards.

We made a trip to Portobello and looked for a place to have a quick lunch at and ended up here. It looked nice enough, and the staff was very friendly to us. We had the soup of the day, which was okay (but not great) and had a nice time sitting there. It is very children-friendly (high chairs available and there were quite a few families eating here) and overall a good place (even though at least the soup didn't convince me).

The Espy as it is known is popular among locals and it's easy to see why. It's splendid position on the prom means you can enjoy eating in or out, the food is decent and well priced and the bar exudes a comfy vibe. Very dog and child friendly. Many of the staff are antipodean, so expect a bit of crack with them. Good selection of beers and the vino not bad either.

Right on the corner of Bath Street and the Promenade. Traditional style pub (that is part of my family history, so lots of nostalgia when I visit!) I went at lunchtime and was quickly seated in the large dining area in the public bar. Service was quick and friendly and there was no problem accommodating my request for a small alteration to a menu item. Food was freshly prepared in the kitchen, served quickly, and delicious. A jug of tap water with cucumber and mint was provided on the table. The place seemed family friendly and efficiently run. The toilets are rather cramped and dated and would benefit from refurbishment, but were clean.

Set right on the beach in Portobello, The Espy is in an ideal spot for a drink while watching the sunset or a fish super at the beach. The decor is fun, with fairy lights and bunting and there are board games to play at your table. The menu was a little light on vegetarian options, with only a veggie burger and salad to choose from, but the prices were good and the portion sizes were huge. Though the food was filling, it wasn't great with flavours. The staff were friendly but the service was slow and we’d finished our drinks by the time they took our order, with no apologies for the delay. I probably wouldn’t rush back but it’s a great option for a drink at the beach on a hot day.

A quirky pub with an eclectic mix of styles. The food looks to be your standard for a pub but with decently sized portions. The bar area has nice comfy couches and a couple of high backed chairs. Alongside the decent selection of beers and spirits on offer this is a nice place to spend a night with friends and family. The pub is also dog friendly meaning you can have a walk along the promenade and stop off for a bite on your way.

The food was truly excellent and they handled our large order of both starters and mains in timely fashion. Warm and cosy, with a restaurant one side,seating and sofas the other, with the bar seperating the two. Wide range of alcoholic drinks and cocktails. Food was delicious but the fish and chips was insanely large, as are all their portions so be warned. Me and my friend where really hungry and both could only finished half the fish and chips, would have been worth sharing one. Parking can be a little tricky, especially weekends. Very busy on weekends, suggest to book for sure. All round nice cosy place. Would recommend

Nice place, part of a wee local chain of bars...only slight issue is (always) the lack of attention any of the bar staff pay people at the actual bar, although it has now become much more food orientated of late. Portobello is a must to visit when in Edinburgh, just for an hour or so though during the day.

A welcoming, chilled-out pub in Portobello. Perfect for some warming grub after a walk along the beach (the nachos are especially good). The only problem is nabbing a table in the dog-friendly back bar - it's so popular with the local dog-walking crowd that there's rarely a spare corner!

Been few times before and would have given it 5☆ previously however this time was let down a little. Table was dirty, chilli cheese burger wasn't tasty - burger was bland with a teaspoon portion of chilli on it. Milkshakes seem to have been downsized and as a result are way overpriced.

Just don't get the negative reviews. Someone saying food and bar good and then awarding The Espy a poor - fair rating. Was there early evening 29/01/13 and food and wine good and reasonably priced as always. Staff attentive but not over-bearing and happy to chat about film nights and dog friendly policy. Young girl (18 months old?) made so welcome as were tourists who rearranged seats for a better view of the rain and gale force winds. The toilets have always let The Espy down but I understand they are closing for a few days in the next couple of weeks to freshen up the decor and improve "the facilities" so maybe there will be nice mirrors, radiators that work and hot water! The Esplanade Bar - or Espy, as it's more commonly known - is a friendly, vaguely-Australian-inflected bar that does an alright trade in booze and an excellent line in burgers. Its a busy, buzzy place, with a "more is more" approach to interior design, but in feel it's unpretentious and cosy. Babies and dogs are warmly welcomed. Staff are very friendly if occasionally more enthusiastic than competent. The bar menu is very standard bar fare, fine but not brilliant, save for the mountainous burgers, which are Just Ace - huge, meaty, charred, and utterly gratifying. You can get some good beer - they even have some great Australian imports - but the wine is a bit woeful and cocktails are inexpertly put together (its not that kind of joint, really). All in all, if you've had a day in the sun and are looking to round it off with beers'n'burgers, this is just the place for you.

A friend wanted somewhere local to knit and natter in the afternoon so I suggested The Espy. We settled down to our knitting after a light lunch from a menu that was not very inspiring and hasn't changed much over the years. The staff are always very friendly and the service is excellent. I did know that The Espy is 'dog friendly'. Dog friendly pubs seems to be the new trend in Portobello. I imagined dogs snoozing peacefully by the fire but instead the dogs that duly arrived with their various owners were like a little group of toddlers meeting up for the first time, demanding attention, constantly active and somewhat restless and suspicious of each other. The owners cajoling, shouting and reprimanding their pets inbetween chatting to each other led to a rather strained atmosphere. The smell of smoke may be gone from our pubs but we now seem to have a new aroma - a la Dog, but at least it doesn't have the same health risks!

I have mixed feelings about The Espy. On one hand their staff are friendly, the little of their food I have eaten has been ok, the beer is good, the location excellent, and most of all they are dog-friendly. On the other hand, as the evening draws on it does seem to attract some dodgy clientelle. Admittedly, I am basing this on one evening spent at the Espy, but on this one evening one person tried to start a fight with me for unavoidably brushing past him at the narrow bit next to the bar; another person tried to sell me some drugs; and finally somebody else stole my phone. Obviously, the clientelle is not the fault of the bar, but it affects the experience nevertheless. Despite my evening there not being a great success, I give them four stars for being dog-friendly and for the fact that the manager let me watch the CCTV footage to determine that my phone had in fact been stolen.

I rather like the Epsy and perhaps the only significant problem with this seaside pub is that plenty of other people like it too. This makes the Epsy unpredictable. This is a Portobello pub. It's not posh. It's clean but it can it takes a low of light to illuminate the room and we're talking wooden floors and basic seats. There's no sawdust on the floor but there is sometimes sand. Does that strike you as the type of pub you'd be wise to reserve a table at if you wanted to eat dinner? You should at the Epsy. Even in the Winter it can be busy. I turn up at 7pm in the January darkness, looking for a table for one, and do so fully prepared to be turned back. I come here for beer and burgers. This is what you'd want from a seaside pub. My vote goes to The Hombre burger; topped in chilli. Beef with beef. What's certain is that if fine weather has lured you out to Portobello and now you're looking for somewhere to eat then find where Bath Street meets the Promenade and give the Epsy a try.
