Reviews of The Granary
J. D.
A perfect setting for a magnificent brunch. All dishes prepared to perfection. Very friendly and discreet staffers. Lots of weddings elect this as their favorite location.
F. G. d. R.
Good fish and chips, and a good burger, too. Friendly staff. Not spectacular and a tad expensive (especially the drinks), hence the four stars.
S. S.
Very lovely place for dinner. All food taste excellent and well presented. The staff are very busy but very patient and responsive. We love the ox cheek pie the most. Highly recommended.

I visited it 3 days in a row during my visit to Edinburgh and each day was a pleasant experience. Positives: amazing menu, cozy atmosphere, wonderful ambiance and very clean. Concerning the service, all the staff members without exception, from the service to the manager, they were very helpful, polite and they made me feel unique.
K. H.
Had vegan fish and chips and my partner had the chicken burger and skinny fries. Lovely, tasty food with great attention to detail (mine had mushy peas, gerkins and vegan tartare and was served on an old style custom designed newspaper). Smart venue inside. Ideal for sunny lunch by the quay.
A. B.
Excellent food and drink in a great location. Kids menu has three choices of starters, mains and dessert. Take a window seat to watch the world go by.

The Granary has been around for a few years but popped in today for first time in a while. Very impressed. Fish and chips was superb - as good as I've had in a restaurant. Proper little crispy "chippy" chips and fish very fresh. Wife had a lovely bowl of soup. Best of all we were worried about turning up with 3 kids and 2 prams but the restaurant had clearly catered for this with an area for families. Less stressful for us with noisy kids and, knowing what it's like to be surrounded by noisy kids, I'm sure better for the adults only diners! Will go again no question. Great to see this shore institution at the top of its game again.
A. G.
Great service with a smile. Food was pretty good as well. We were not upstairs or at the front near the window we were at the back, alone, but it soon filled up. Bright lively place with music (it was friday evening). Parking was a nightmare, took us well over 10-mins of driving about. Will we be going back - you bet we will.
k.
Good service drink was okay a tad pricy though
G. T.
Really nice atmosphere. Really good food and great service. This area of the city is soooo nice, a bunch of bars and restaurants on the water.
T. F.
Lovely atmosphere, wasn’t too busy, a good spot to have lunch. Great choice for food, plenty to offer in terms of dietary needs.
S. W.
We walked past this place twice and decided to give it a try. We wanted coffees and desserts. The server was really pleasant and offered us a table next to the fireplace. It was raining outside so sitting next to fireplace having lattes and sticky toffee pudding was divine. This place has a warm atmosphere and really lovely staff. The location is very pretty as its located right next to the river.
They have a fully stacked bar with a great selection of cocktails and drinks. I have to come again and enjoy the food and drinks instead of coffee and cakes.
I would certainly recommend this place to have a good time.
k.
Friendly service and nice refreshing cocktail....nice place to sit down and feel the warmth of the sunshine 🌞
K. D. B.
Very nice food and lovely staff! Don't miss it ! Just perfect for lunch ! Thank you Ana !!!
E. M.
Reuben loved his first trip to The Granary! Thank you for being accommodating.
V. “. M.
Good food, drinks, service, decor.
T. C.
One of the best Sunday roasts I've had in years. The pie is amazing too 🤤
R. D.
Went for a wedding. Lovely building. Great staff. Amazing food
P. A. H.
First time here and loved it. Front room was catering to the Six Nations but apart from an occasional cheer we weren't bothered in the back and warm and cosy room. Staff were attentive and friendly but not intrusive. Food was excellent. Big thumbs up. Even though it's a short bus ride away we will return.
J. L.
Nice bar with professional staff.
Beef cheek pie was awesome.
My wee pooch snoozed on his blanket so this place gets his thumbs up!
A. M.
My wife, my children and I had a wonderful meal tonight in a clean and characterful venue. The service was excellent and our well behaved children were treated respectfully. The confit of duck was extremely tasty as was the fire cracker chicken salad my wife tried. Our kids also gave their seal of approval with two clean plates, but the portion sizes were just right as they were not looking for more. All in all a very fortuitous find and a lovely evening.

Three of us went for dinner and drinks at The Granary last night. What a find ! The food and service are second to none !!! . The staff were super and everyone made us feel so welcome ! We were very impressed by the way the manager Andrew was so very kind and helpful with our taxi problem .This place has fantastic live music . We stayed there until late as we couldn’t tear ourselves away . Well done all!!!
We will be back !!!
G. Y.
Very friendly staff - good ambiance- superb jazz music by Katie James & Karel. You have got to listen to them to appreciate jazz!!👏🎉
K. F.
Great location and friendly helpful staff. Lovely relaxed atmosphere. Great food for 2 adults and 2 children. Unfortunately due to the dreaded covid they were doing a slightly reduced menu so no ox cheek pie I was hoping for! Sadly we were rushing to get to another location so couldn't wait for adult puddings, but childrens were lovely. Would definitely recommend for a quality lazy meal but not if you are in a rush to go elsewhere. Not a critism, just meant we were unable to make the most of it. Fantastic all round
T. O.
We come to this bar regularly and it's always a good time. The drinks are good, and it is one of the best places for no&low cocktails.
E.
Lovely place to grab a drink. Pricey but it's not a boozer, so good to be able to hear people and have a chat. Went at the backend of lockdown so can't say what it's like during normal hours. Would def say, things on the menu aren't available after certain times with no notification of such, know it's trying to be classy but a note saying X items are available during lunch/dinner etc. Would be helpful. Also a basic option of snacks for X people (with a scaling price) wouldn't go a miss, rather than trying to do algebra when you just wanna sit, have a chat, a drink & a nibble.
G. S. (.
Punctual service, and is very covid secure/aware. Drinks were brought over quickly and food was good. Our mains were a little cold but it wasn’t really a big issue. Good quality food and would definitely come back.
Side note. the large rugs on the floor absolutely need bolted down or some other solution as I saw two members of staff almost trip on this one visit alone.
D. P.
Lovely lunch, good menu choice. Friendly relaxed atmosphere. Nicely furnished
B. S.
Sadly quite slow service. Service charge added to every single drinks order
M. C.
Super friendly staff, excellent food and big choiche of drinks. We will come back when we will be next time in Edinburgh.
N. D.
Place is very clean and Covid rules in place.
Front of house staff very nice but unfortunately the size of my Haddock was half the size of my husband's very disappointing when I politely complained was told nothing could be done but we did get a discount .
Presentation and quality was good .
D. K.
Very nice food and lovely staff!
J. M.
Had our Christmas night out with work here on Sunday evening.. decent food and great service, particularly from Steph and Becca 😊
I. P.
Professional staff, excellent food. Highly recommend.
A. R.
Great place for a morning coffee. Friendly staff, lovely fireplace and warm decor. Will definitely be coming back. Fully recommend!
s. m.
Very nice sunday afternoon meal, dog friendly which was nice. Portions and pricing are great. I had the cullen skink and sunday roast and both were delicious. Staff we friendly and helpful
M. M.
Food and service was great. Asked if I could re-fill my water and they did so - even asked if I wanted lemon juice with my water
M.
Nice surroundings. Quiet and comfortable to enjoy a leisurely afternoon.
D. C.
Very nice friendly staff, full of helpfulness. Meals very tasty and nice. Little more filling in pie would have been welcome. Otherwise definitely no gripes.
A. W.
The coffee and food were excellent unfortunately we had a very long wait between ordering and receiving our food, at least 50 mins. They were not particularly busy with people having meals that morning so not sure what the delay was.
J. L.
Visited The Granary for a few drinks and dinner. We did not have any booking but the waiter found a table for us quickly. We ordered a few drinks (cocktails and beers) and then decided to try their food. We could tell the food was fresh and homemade - the fish and onion ring batter really tasty and crispy. Well done and we will be back soon :) !!
E. M. C.
We had a lovely lunch time meal and drinks with fantastic service in this fabulous bar at the waterside in Leith. The staff went out of their way to make us a gorgeous icecream dessert not on the menu. Well done guys!
S. F.
A decent spot to sit and watch rugby while drinking beer.
K. P.
Nice venue with live music at the weekends.
Good food to be had in the split-level venue overlooking the water of Leith
N. M.
Great service by the lovely blonde waitress and Andrew! Really nice good food too
N. B.
Nice food well served. Nice atmosphere and the venue is pleasant, well decorated and nicely laid out and furnished. We've been many times and always enjoyed it. 2 criticisms today. The table next to us, people left almost 45 minutes before it was approached to be cleared, and the music was too loud. It's not deafening by any means but is pretty intrusive. Neither would stop us returning. Altogether a good venue.
a. f.
Went to a wedding reception here, great venue, much bigger than it looks.
The food was great, and the drink selection was extensive.
N. T.
Top notch spot to graze on small plates and have a drink... friendly staff ..good service.... everything we ate was tasty too.
J. V.
Friendly staff had time for chat and the service was prompt. We both had fish & chips, which were a good sized portion, the fish was really fresh. It was a Monday night but there were a few people in and so the atmosphere was pleasant! Would definitely recommend.
S. R.
My family and I went to the Granary on Christmas Day this year.
We had a wonderful table as promised, and the food was wonderful.
However, our huge thanks go to Paulina and everyone else who helped organise our day.
The waiters and waitresses were absolutely wonderful and worked so hard . They couldn’t do enough for us and we are so grateful.
Many thanks again.
C. R.
Just stopped in for a drink and disappointed they still use plastic straws.
M. H.
1 Vegan option available. The baked polenta. It was very nice, our friends with fish and chips etc also tried it and loved it.
We walked in without booking early Saturday evening and were given a table for 6 quickly. Would definitely recommend.
D. W.
Fabulous club sandwich here. Very dog-friendly. Generally friendly!
B. B.
Stayed locally and had a great evening in the granary, good food and great service.
W. C.
Nice atmosphere , food decent, menu was restricted or would have gave 5 stars , had a nice evening though
F. B.
We were a party of 3 arriving at about 1310 with no reservation. The place was buzzing and almost full but we got lucky with a window table. The girl serving us was lovely and very welcoming.
The food, once it came, was tasty, plentyful and enjoyed by all, unfortunately it took almost an hour to be served our food. Our order was poached egg with smashed avocado on sourdough toast with bacon and roasted vine tomatoes; mac & cheese with roasted red pepper and onion; full scottish breakfast. We didn't feel that any of our order should have held it up for an hour plus! That said our poor waitress came to apologise on several occasions and gave us a free drink each. On receiving the bill we were pleased to see they had taken 25% off for our good nature and patience. We will go again because as I said the food was lovely.
P. M.
Once greeted at the door We were told by one of the servers that it could take up to an hour to eat, which was fine as we had to feed our baby first, we were offered highchair within 30 seconds of being served and Our order was taken quite quickly. Which was pretty good considering they were busy with large tables, the wait didn't seem that long and our table was touched regularly with apologies of the delay (could not fault any of the servers attitudes they were all polite, freindly and very attentive). Once the food came out it was well presented ( full breakfast) hot and cooked perfectly. Haggis was really tasty and black pudding nice and peppery. The wife's and my son's were good from the feedback from them ( club sandwich and fish and chips). Upon paying we were offered a discount for the long delays, a really really nice gesture but was not needed.
Sorry for the long winded review but your staff were amazing, thank you.
F. S.
Great atmosphere. Mellow sounds from the band , nice place with good service .
E. K.
The food here is wonderful and the staff are fantastic. They look after you so well right down to the last detail, with great chat throughout. There's a real fire giving off a lovely warmth and comfy seating. Electric sockets are easily available (please ask though, just to be safe...and polite). Toys and books are available for young children and the staff are absolutely amazing with them too. There is wheelchair access to the bar, restaurant area through the back and the restroom also. There is seating upstairs which catches the sunlight until almost the very end a function room upstairs which also hosts pole dance classes. Large windows and loads of sunlight and (if there are no cars outside) a beautiful view over the Water of Leith. Overall this place is brilliant and well worth a visit :)
O. B.
Lovely staff but food was a bit tasteless (had the vegan burger)
S. S.
Nice staff. Live music. Average prices
V. V.
Great food, friendly staff and amazing festive cocktails.
J. S.
Attentive service , relaxing atmosphere, beautiful view of the water and very tasty food. Would recommended, remember to pre book as very popular.
A. P. (.
This place had a very nice starter, but had very nice starter.
The starter said it was spicy but from my experience I would not even notice if it said crayfish pot, instead of spicy crayfish pot.
My main was very disappointing, the chunky chips were nice but the batter on he fish I thought was poor. If I come back here again I will be sure to not have that "fish & chips".
Overall I thought this place was OK which leads me to rate a 3 star for this place, definitely NOT the worse place I have been to but I would go to other restaurants before I go here.
G. C.
On arrival the staff were welcoming even though it was a busy weekend. I was happy that they accommodated my request to sit upstairs out of the restaurant area for a meal.
The food was good and I also had a rather nice latte to accompany my meal. If you're down in Leith I would recommend this establishment for its good service and atmosphere.
N. F.
Good service and nice cocktails. Some of the drinks are a bit pricey but they're nice.
C. D.
Went during the jazz festival and had a good time. One round of drinks got messed up because their tonic ran out on the tap, so we ended up drinking top-shelf gin with soda water. We informed a server but she didn't know how to help, and only later (on the next round) the bartender let us know that they could've replaced the drinks for us if we let them know.
G. L.
Beautiful food and staff were so friendly. Would highly recommend when visiting Leith.
A. L.
Summary: Attractive and spacious cafe/bar, but disappointing service often lets it down.
The Granary could hardly have a better location, sited, as it is, overlooking the Water of Leith. Within, the decor charms with its scrawled quotations, warm colours, and open fire. This all enhances a spacious interior that also has an upper mezzanine, large rear area, and even a small corner for children to play. Coupled with this, a wide variety of drinks and food is available, all of which are generally above average quality, and live music is a common feature. So, what's not to like?
The service.
The quality of service, I've found, is very variable. On some visits, it could hardly be better, on others it is just unacceptably bad.
So, if you're lucky, and get one of the good service staff, the Granary is a fine establishment for a comfortable meal or fun evening out; in particular, it's Sunday lunches are especially good. But if you're unlucky, the Granary does not impress. At all.
S. D.
Had a lovely time at the Granary for Christmas day. It was a different Christmas for my family due to a family bereavement in early autumn. The Granary was great , staff were first class and made what was a tough day as enjoyable as possible. Food was great and service was smooth.
Many thanks to you all ♥️
J. T.
The location on the water is great, and the layout of the bar, with a mezzanine floor, is really nice. But, the the beer selection is average, and the food is pretty mediocre. Never really delivers on the promise of its first impression.
R. W.
Lovely food and nice service, good setting for some quiet pub grub.
J. B.
Good place for food and drinks. PJ was our waitress and she was great. Buffalo chicken popcorn is amazing.
K. J.
Food was really wonderful and it has a great atmosphere. Service was really slow, took 10 min to get a menu, another 15 min to get drinks etc. Wasn't a busy night, had 5 tables filled of about 30 in the restaurant. Great place to go if you're not in a rush.
K. B.
Very nice sharing/nibbles dishes. Great flavours, friendly staff
I.
awful service at Christmastime but good food at least
H. A.
Had a really nice main course, it was dog friendly as we took ours in with us. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, offerd us a little tub of water for our pooch. The food was delicious! Couldn't fault it at all
P. D. L. N.
I’d been there numerous times and popped there again on a lazy Sunday morning to get my breakfast. The Granary has beautiful wooden & stone interiors and is perfectly located with a great view of The Shore. The waitress was very friendly and efficient. I got the Full Scottish Breakfast which was exactly “as written on the tin” no more, no less, but did the trick.
Tried the food in other occasions but was nothing out of the ordinary.
Good selection of drinks (lagers, beers, wheat beers, wines, gins, cocktails, etc.) is available but rather overpriced.
During evenings the place can get busy (nice atmosphere, though) but the bar staff is not renowned for their speed, so if you are queuing for a pint and the bar tender is making a cocktail, well…you are kind of doomed…
Plus: interiors, strong WiFi & location.
Minus: Evening service speed (or lack of it) & kind of average food.
A place to go back, bearing in mind that you may wait a long time to be served during busy hours.
J. G.
Sadle the Granary has gone downhill, the service is still good and the drinks selection is excellent, but the food was a disappointment. The steak pie was advertised as having a puff pastry lid but had an odd, flat top which was neither puff nor shortcrust, the filling was generous but over salty and there was a paucity of chips on the side.
I. W.
Really interesting and cool bar restaurant
A. K.
Service accurate but slow. Someone added a cocktail we did not have or order to our bill. The restaurant is dark, the toilets are a flight up from the restaurant. The menu is limited and average.
D. B.
Good service, beautiful location by the docks. Eggs Royale (Salmon Benedict) were tasty. Spotted some small flies about but not enough to seriously detract from the experience. Interior vibe is really cool - you can sense the history of the space while appreciating the modern updates.
B. G.
Situated in Leith with street parking immediately adjacent this is a bright lively bar/bistro pub. The food is good from a varied menu that includes some tantalising dishes as well as the usual favourites of "fish and chips" and hamburgers. Friendly staff and reasonable prices. Definitely worth a visit for drinks or food.
M. C.
Great friendly staff & atmosphere ,👍👍👍
J. T.
Nice place, a bit overpriced for what you get.
A. H.
Underwhelmed. Limited menu. Slow service.
C. D.

Very nice we were a bit cold sitting having our drinks
G. C.
Service very slow but food was OK when it came a bit pricie

This place had a very nice starter, but had very nice starter.

Pretty chilled contemporary bar down the shore, well worth a visit.
N. B.
Nice food well served. Nice atmosphere and the venue is pleasant, well decorated and nicely laid out and furnished. We've been many times and always enjoyed it. 2 criticisms today. The table next to us, people left almost 45 minutes before …
A. D.
Good food in general. I liked the fish and chips which was really nicely cooked and avoided being greasy. Cheese and biscuits felt more like a sampler then something you'd actually be charged for.
J. D.
Really lovely spacious restaurant and the food was amazing, would definitely return!
S.
Great food enjoyed sitting outside with a few drinks overlooking the water.
O. W.
A really nice location in Edinburgh. Down at the shore. Options for sitting outside in the sunshine during the summer or sit indoors in the cosy surroundings during the winter months.
They have a nice function room upstairs which has it's own private bar with ample seating for all.
Great service and highly recommend their soup and sandwich deal for lunch.
G. M.
Very nice staff food excellent
K. W.
For food: can be great, can be infuriating - there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. When they're on song it's definitely worth it. If you're not in it for food, the decor and ambience is great, and the staff friendly.
A. P.
Amazing cocktails, good seating, live music
A. W.
Had a great team meal out. Service and quality was very good.
R. K.
Pleasantly surprised by the food. Nice wine and beer. Friendly staff welcoming with our new borne but had to be out by 8 due to licensing laws.
M. D.
We ha to wait quite a long time to be served, the cocktail selection is not huge but quite appropriate, nice atmosphere over all, food quite basic but well executed. I give this a three stars.
A. N.
Service was appalling. Our waiter seemed to be of the opinion he was doing us a favour by serving us. Also asked if he could get us the bill before we'd finished eating! (it was early evening so they weren't about to close). Neither me nor my friend have been back. Food was nothing special anyway if I'm honest.
a. m.
Staff made us feel instantly at home even on our first visit. Will definitely be back!
J. K.
A nice place to stop for a drink, with a well-stocked bar and rustic, bare-bricked decor. Good food at lunchtime, though the service is often a bit slow. Enjoyable enough.
B. G.
Stopped for coffee and cake on a Tuesday morning. Good coffee, good cake, relaxed atmosphere. Lingering smell of stale beer, so maybe not cleaned thoroughly every night, hence 1 star off.
L. M.
Excellent meal, dietary needs very well catered for. Very attentive staff. Well worth the money, excellent value. Will definately go back again.
J. N.
Went there for a predrinks in my boyfriend's birth. Maybe was quite busy for me ( I was pregnant and was a little noise ) but we really enjoy our cocktail/mocktail
d. s.
Nice wee cozy pub lovely atmosphere had a nice night here 😀
M. G.
Nice atmosphere. Quiz night was a ton of fun. The food was average, except for the mussels. They were fantastic.
A. L.
Excellent menu. Fish and chips was very tasty
P. R.
Very enjoyable and relaxing meal good food choices
R. G.
A good place to come and listen to music at weekends. Food not bad either. It's in a prime location down by the shore and if the sun's out the outside seating catches the evening rays.
M. T.
Food and drinks were great! Unfortunately the service was quite slow on a Friday night and it was difficult to get our waiter for ordering food/drinks and getting the bill.
S. W.
A cosy and atmospheric pub/restaurant with good food and a wide range of cocktails, beers and whisky
J. M.
We booked the Granary for my wife's 30th birthday and the function room, food and staff were all great. I will be recommending it to any friends seeking a function venue.
R.
Very friendly staff. Laid back chilled place and has good acoustic live music at weekends. Food top notch too
S. P.
Very nice place close to the sea. Very friendly staff, especially the Spanish waiter. Suggested if you are around
M. f. o.
Excellent food and friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere.
Would love to live nearby to frequent more often.
C. T.
Lovely place, really nice atmosphere, really good food. Live music as well to further enhance the conversation and atmosphere.
j. r.
Better places close by, ok
P. S.
Food and drink both really nice and staff really friendly 👌👌
A. G.
Cool brunch & bloody Mary.. Andrew McDermott the waiter is an affa fine loon
A. M.
Cozy and spacious at the same time; lovely old exposed interior timbers. Not a bad range of beers on tap and good fish and chips.
W. F. A.
A really nice place to eat and drink but it's quite pricey. Great atmosphere and very classy.
I. M.
The Granary was lovely. Thorougly enjoyed my sandwich. Nice relaxing eatery. Staff very attentive and helpful.
W. R.
It was quiet when we got there but soon it became busier. The eggs florentine were divine and priced very reasonably too. Great service in a great location.
S. S.
The staff were wonderful, the service was great. It was amazing sitting by the window with the sun streaming in. My only disappointment was that their red wine was a bit pricey
M. V.
Great place! It has a nice view, the service is excellent, very good beer, very nice food and the live music on some days is awesome!
D. K.
Lovely vegetarian breakfast and great coffee.
A. B.
Just had a few pints here on a Saturday night, but it was spacious, good atmosphere, decent beer and the service was really efficient.
N. S.
Average brunch. I went with a group of 4, our poached eggs were overdone and everything was rather cold. Tasted good though
M. D.
Perfect Scottish breakfast as a German would imagine it! Friendly staff and nice atmosphere. All in all a total thumb up!
C. C.
Excellent food although service a bit slow
W. M.
Superb brunch offering at weekends and great service.
M. C.
Had an excellent meal here today. Staff very friendly helpful.
Keep it up.
A. C.
Myself and three others got the cocktail masterclass here, well run and decent value for money. Lovely bar.
L. I.
Good place to be for all kind of events. Also nice food and drinks & cocktails served all day long..
G. C.
Service very slow but food was OK when it came a bit pricie
E. B.
Fantastic lunch and then breakfast the following day. Excellent food and very good service indeed from friendly staff
J. L.
Lovely bar/restaurant with very nice food. Not too expensive either. Live music on some nights too.
L. P.
Each day/evening there was different music. Jazz, pop, Country. Lovely place, good food, good atmosphere.
J. N. C.
Amazing atmosphere at Shore, Leith. Beverages on a reasonable price and live music every now and then. Kind and helpful staff.
D. R.
Pleasantly surprised with a large bowl of mussels perfectly cooked. The bar area was nice with very pleasant staff.
J. G.
Nice place for dinner. Staff attentive food well presented and tasted fabulous price very reasonable
C. Y.
Okay food, very beautiful setting and friendly but at times staff might be spread too thin
A. J.
Beautiful Pub with such friendly staff and well the French Martini was absolutely amazing well done guys
D. A.
Beef burger was good but we tried to order several (3) tank beers that were sold out
D. M.
Lovely food, friendly staff, good service, a really relaxing atmosphere (perfect for date night) 😊
K. Y.
Very nice we were a bit cold sitting having our drinks
B. N.
Good pub, large and quite formal. Good quiz on a Wednesday night, comedy nights at the end of the month. Worth a look.
D. T.
Lovely staff. Very attentive at private function. Lemonade available on draft only & that was awful.
c. a.
Excellent atmosphere. Great food. Brilliant live music!
G. J.
Great food with a very good selection of beers. Reasonably priced with a very relaxed atmosphere
