Reviews of The Newsroom Bar & Eatery
M. E.
Staff are always friendly and helpful. Food is always nice. 5 minute walk from Edinburgh Playhouse. Which makes it perfect for us. We had starters of Broccoli & Stilton soup and Breaded mushrooms. The soup came with 3 large slices of sourdough bread and was really nice. The mushrooms were 3 massive pieces, about the length of my hand, served with a nice mayo dip and had a tomato salsa salad. The mushrooms were Crispy and moist and were really nice. Mains of Tequila Mocking Dog and fish and chips. The dog was superb, but was not smothered in sauce as claimed, but was nice along with Fries. The fish as always was very large. Nice Crispy batter and flakey fish was superb. The chunky chips were nice. Had a portion of onion rings which as usual were very large and crunchy. Looking forward to our next visit.

Located directly across from the new St James Centre, this restaurant is one of the best I have been to in Edinburgh. Extensive menu with loads to choose from, from fajitas to classic fish n chips to hot dogs. Dessert menu was short and sweet. Also a good selection of Christmas drinks and food which was a pleasant surprise. I've never seen a drinks menu with so much to choose from before, most specifically beers, gins and cocktails. Food and drinks were delicious. The environment in the place was lively but not overly so and we received a quick and wonderful welcome coming in from the cold. You have to go here! And we will definitely be back!
A. S.
Had a nice lunch at The Newsroom! We all split some appetizers and had some nice alcoholic beverages. It is in a very ideal location, close to everything! Definitely a good place to stop by after a day of walking around and needing a break.
A. Z.
Amazingly delicious bramble cocktail, best I've had in a while.
The staff was very welcoming even though I had no booking. Didn't have time to try their food but would love to visit again when back in Edinburgh.
J. D.
Very nice place. Nice food. Nice staff
Coixe of beer and the cocktails look amazing
C. T.
Amazing super friendly helpful staff. Amazing food and great value for menu. Would definitely recommend and to pre book if visiting
A. F.
The food was incredible and the cocktails were amazing... A little noisy but that was the customers. Such friendly, attentive staff.
B.
Nice place to have drinks and something to eat, prices were average for the area. We ordered the fish and chips, it was a large serving, the fish was cooked perfectly, however, there was a couple of small niggles, the batter was a bit greasy and there were far too many peas on the plate. The servers were polite, prompt and well presented. The toilets are downstairs, if you are tall, mind your head when using the cubicle on the right as the roof is quite low above the cistern (there is padding to dull the blow). Nice place well worth a visit.
K. “. R.
The food was good, large dish.
Toilets tiny but tidy :)
Atmosphere great! Nice staff, tending to all sorts of things, from helping to charge my phone to taking care nicely of a loud drunken guy, really pro.
Interior nice, clean and casual.
I recommend for dinner, lunch, chatting by a drink or staying the whole evening.
G. C.
Gorgeous location, cosy decor, really lovely staff and amazing food and drinks.
The people next to me told the waitress that their burgers were the best yet! I had scampi and it was very tasty.
I didn't want to come home from here it was so nice. Ill definitely be back on my next trip 😁
Thanks to all 3 people that served me you were all lovely!
J.
Food was good but when we visited it seemed like they were understaffed. Took a while to get our order taken.
J. K.
Great bar in a convenient location. Interesting beer selection and fair prices, plus a fully stocked selection of liquors. Makes a great stop after work or at the end of a night before returning to the hotel (many of which are within walking distance)
A. T.
I don’t normally wrote reviews but this place is 5 out of 5! Amazing food, amazing prices, amazing service.
A. C.
I popped in for a drink there. Because it was Friday evening the place have been quite busy however we found a table. I observed people around and I came into a conclusion that whatever reason, whoever you are with everyone will find something interesting for oneself. Casual and cosy The Newsroom will probably find your soft spot and hit it directly. Go and enjoy.
A. F.
Beer was pretty good and food was excellent. Loaded fries and the Balmoral Chicken were standouts, really recommend.
J. S.
Amazing food, nice decor and service
J. H.
Popped in on the off chance and a table was found for us. Service and food was good. Great little bar/restaurant fab atmosphere would definitely go again!
P. T.
Came with friends. Good food, big portions and friendly energetic staff. The nachos were literally bathing in sauce which was a bit over the top to say the least (borderline soup..) but tastey nonetheless. I'd come back :)
C. P.
Lively and loud but great food and service, we had haggis followed by deep fried Mars bar, fantastic!!
P. D.
Great selection of drinks, staff were friendly. We didn't eat but food looked lovely. Toilets are downstairs and there was no toilet roll at the time I went. One was also out of order I did let staff know and they said they would replenish.
E. T.
Food is quite pricey but location and sign of the times dictates that. Drinks well priced. Steak and Guinness pie is top notch. Staff attentive and a good atmosphere👍
B.
Lovely staff, newly redecorated and cool central place we will definitely visit again. Balmoral chicken was well cooked and seasoned, haggis was tasty, mash creamy and peppercorn sauce creamy and rich. Philly cheese steak fries were absolutely delicious, tangy, rich, mountains of melted cheese and lots of sauce. We will be back !
J. W.
Just love this bar, great food, great staff and great atmosphere.
A. W.
Cute little pub in a good location. Loved the cocktails
J. G.
Food and service great, it was an awesome place to pop in. We loved the beer selection and the breaded mushroom app. Gillie made sure we had a fantastic time and had everything we need. Thanks Gillie!
T. R.
Popped in for a late lunch and was pleasantly surprised by how nice everything was.
We had the tequila mockingbird and naughty hot dogs and both came with high quality hot dogs and were really big portions. The hand cut chips were also nice.
We had the fudge cake and apple dessert - both were really tasty too.
On the whole a nice pub to eat and drink.
K. B.
Nice place been 3 times now cocktails are good service is also good. Big shout out to the waiter with the mustache nice pleasant man
B. S.
Nice menu with good prices. Friendly service but could have done with some recommendations, was full after the starter and couldn't finish the main meal though delicious... especially the traditional huggies dish.
J. g.
Kept passing this place on every visit to Edinburgh so finally made the decision to go in. Was very busy and it was clear that there were not many staff working however the food was top notch. Will definitely be back!
S. T.
Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, decent toilets. The normal and vegetarian Haggis dishes were both delicious.
M. B.
Kind server, good food and beer. 👍
A. B.
Stumbled across this bar/bistro. Food that is trying hard to be good. Prices are fair. Staff are hard working and friendly. The fruit and nut salad was a variation on a French classic: Hot Goat's Cheese salad. The cheese and bacon wasn't warm, wasn't meant to be. The lettuce leaves lacked a good vinaigrette to marry the flavours of the strawberries, walnuts, cheese and bacon. Now for the Haggis, tatties and neeps. Great presentation and loved the deep fried Swede, which intensified it's flavour. A great idea. The Haggis was fine. The potato was a peppery disaster. The amount of pepper killed the dish. I guessed it was served with a whisky sauce, but the huge quantity of pepper in the potato bulldozered through every single taste bud on my tongue. Accident in the kitchen? Hope so. The Big Story burger was big and good. Enjoyed the Sticky toffee pudding without it knocking the ball out of the park. Every one is trying really hard to make this place work. They must have other dishes that work as amongst the tourists there were regulars there. Good choice of beers and cocktails.
1. 5.
Nice friendly bar good service bit old fashioned and traditional but some may like it.
i. l.
Pros - The food portions were huge, 3 of us shared and were totally full and satisfied. Excellent!
Cons - Entrance welcome will be good. We were standing for a while and then moved in on our own to get our seats. For some reasons, no server was there to show us in.
T. L.
Slow service. More interested in booked tables than walk in customers, or so it seems. Not a bad place but when there's one member of staff behind the bar doing what seemed like endless cocktails it needs someone else to serve rather than having to wait. Would recommend reserving a place, you'll probably get faster service.
D. W.
Stopped off here for lunch on a Sunday. They did a great take on haggis, neeps & tattles. Good food & service at a reasonable price. Recommended.
O. W.
Was in today when a group came in with an infant. The licensing rule here says that you can't be here with an infant unless everyone is eating. This group was quite rude to the staff about it, but the staff kept their cool and were really polite, even when the patrons were being quite sassy and rude. Was really impressed. Great drinks, great staff, would definitely come back.
A. R.
What a cozy and superb place.
I really like the convenience location.
Bar is specious and attracts fine crowd.
Grate Music, deliciouse food and refreshing cocktails.
Staff super friendly and welcoming
Table service available until 10.00
Sound
K.
Went for lunch, got in early so place was relatively quiet. Good atmosphere I would say, music was low volume during the day so great for conversations etc.
Food: Good pub food, wasn't amazing but flavours were there. Had a burger.
Drinks: Good selection of bottled beers, would have liked more draught/tap beers.
T. D.
Stopped off for some lunch with my parter and the food is out of this world staff are friendly also. I would highly recommend this place to any one.
N.
Our group had a good time, enjoyed the food. The cocktails looked and tasted gorgeous. Not sure there was much alcohol in them. After five cocktails each costing nearly £50 each we all would have passed a breathalyser. Not our aim on a Friday night! Folks save your money and get shorts or shots instead.
L. B.
The Newsroom has a great atmosphere. The food is delicious and good value for money. The staff are friendly and courteous. Well worth a visit.
L. D.
Very trendy spot with a very lively and great atmosphere. Drinks were reasonably priced and the staff we interacted with were all extremely friendly
D. R.
Great atmosphere & close to the theatre but the pork fillet was over cooked & on the dry side. Saved by the cabbage apple & red wine jus.
K. S.
Fabulous food! Excellent service from the lovely waitress! Very attentive and friendly!
Would recommend to anyone.
P. D.
Awesome food! Recommended.
K. M.
Just a drink, quiet day. Pleasant staff and a good choice of beers. Worth another visit when I'm in the area.
f.
It was quite busy and loud this Thursday evening, but the food, drinks and service were perfect. I enjoyed the haggis supper, which was very nicely presented.
N. A.
Very cosy place with perfect drinks 😍
I. “. s. S.
Excellent service, with some very tasty food and drink on the side.
C. M.
Nice and friendly customer service, good selection of food and drink choices. Reasonable prices for a city, good atmosphere.
K. C.
Fantastic burgers , lovy coffee and friendly helpful staff. We have had a great afternoon in here , many thanks x
A. R.
It was good, busy and the staff were really nice. There is not enough choice on the menu for vegetarians though.
A. S.
good cocktails and deep fried Mars bar. Table service was slow with some errors on the food order.
G. t.
A great place to visit. Excellent service and great food and drinks. Way better than the 'A' across the road.
C. K.
4.5 Server did a quality check, so automatically this place gets a 4 star rating. Food was quite nice. Shrimp was excessively breaded, but easy to rectify ad libitum.
Decor is definitely a highlight. Quaint and kitschy. Decent playlist. Worth a stop in.
E. G.
The staff are incredibly friendly and efficient. Even during busy periods, their level of customer service is on another level. Highly recommend!
D. B.
Excellent food, great atmosphere. Will definitely be back.
W. L.
Great bar with friendly staff. Haven't tried the food but intend to rectify that on next visit to Edinburgh. Highly recommended.
J. T.
Excellent service, lovely food...just what we were looking for
E. H.
Cocktails are amazing, manager Anthony was very attentive and all staff very polite and helpful. Will definitely be back.
Z. I.
Enjoyed the drinks and food immensely on a work night out. Slight issue was that some of our party ordered the sea bass and mentioned that it was far too oily and one of our party wanted something gluten free and vegan and couldn't be accomodated with anything other than sweet potato fries.
F. W.
Love this bar. Great drink selection, relaxed vibe and friendly staff
C. N.
Chill vibe. DJ played boom-bap and hiphop memberberries while the TVs were tuned to Sky News.
M. G.
Excellent, had Balmoral chicken which was delicious, followed by battered mars bar with icecream, chocolate sauce and candied walnuts all washed down with lots of Long Island Ice Tea cocktails. The place is cool, great decor and we sat under a pic of my wife's favourite David Bowie 😊
B. J. D. U.
What gorgeous food?! The best salad I've ever eaten. Gluten-free was well catered for. The basement venue was cool, too.
J.
One of the busiest bar having varieties of cocktails and liquors. The venue has beautiful décor and ambience giving spectacular experience.
M. S.
As Edinburgh residents, we choose our places to eat and drink wisely.
Newsroom, a beautifully newly decorated place, combines delicious food and drinks in one!
The staff were SUPER attentive, fun and welcomed.
Bruce, the gentleman who served us, has been FANTASTIC, and thanks to him, we had a wonderful night.
Please do try a French martini!! It's the best in town.
We had haggis fritters, breaded mushrooms and chips to start with (yes, we were greedy!)
Burger and nachos to follow!
All food was served with perfection, hot and juicy.
Staff kept checking on us and made sure all is ok.
The music was great, and we had an excellent relaxing experience thanks to the staff and the quality of food and drinks.
Highly recommend! A must go to!
E. M.
Friendly staff with table service (due to covid). We were able to get a table as a walk-in. Food was very enjoyable as we're the cocktails enjoyed by the non driver! Good value for money in a very central location in Edinburgh. I would recommend and visit again.
M. M.
Great friendly staff good pub food , nice relaxed atmosphere, will definitely be paying another visit next time I'm in Edinburgh.
P. O.
Enjoyed the food and service and drinks all great. 4 stars because sea bass not on!
S. M.
Food was amazing, staff were awesome and the atmosphere well that was something else
M. T.
What a wonderful bar in Edinburgh to visit you order a glass of Sauvingnon at a very excellent price and taste and sip the night away. Lovely. Xxx Maggie
g. m.
Great food, not too expensive. Very pretty at night with the lovely lights.
C. H.
Cool decor, free wifi, and general good vibe. Came here after a long day exploring Edinburgh as a tourist. Shared the 'Captain's Punch' cocktail jug (£15, pictured), which was nothing special (couldn't taste much/any alcohol, nor every ingredient listed) but quite refreshing. Clean bar/eating area, and clean, nice bathrooms. Overall a good experience!
W. A.
We turned up as a late walk in and they were very helpful and accommodating. Rustled up a sharing platter for us, which was great. Paid by card, the amount on the machine and forgot I carry no cash these days, therefore forgot to tip. 🙄
Sorry guys, it was great and we'll be back 👍
C. K.
A bit noisy but good vibes and a quite nice burger.
M. M.
Great wee bar . Very clean! Very busy..Good service at the bar. Friendly staff..I will definitely be back.
A. R.
Had a fantastic time the food was fantastic and service second to none ...the cocktails were to die for ..we tried a few ..well worth a visit
B. S.
A nice place for a quick meal or social drink with friends. Having the beef & Guinness pie with mash was nice, being real potato though broccoli was undercooked. The pastry on top of the filling was nice too. Care L they sting you for sauces as extra!
A. K.
Fantastic friendly pub with great food, drinks and wonderful staff. Haggis nachos to die for
J. S.
Great location. Decent menu. Good quality food. Not huge portions and sides are extra but worth a visit. Superb selection of beers.
P. S.
Great bacon rolls. Big roll plus lots of back bacon. Excellent value at only £2.50 each.
Coffee was nice but not hot enough.
Excellent service.
A. P.
Absolutely love this place. We visited on Saturday 3rd July and cannot recommend it enough. We didn't book... but I advise you to reserve a table if possible. We were very lucky that we managed to walk in and there was a table free until a specific time..which we were so greatful for. The guy who managed to do this for us and the waitress that served us ... thank you!! Your random shot surprises and your customer service was brilliant. Couldn't have asked for better. Made our night. Sorry we can't remember any names... 🙈
H. H.
Amazing pulled pork. Amazing hand cut chips. Wanted to try the deep fried Mars bar but I’m allergic to nuts and it has walnuts !
M. C.
Lovely staff very helpful and I though reasonable prices for capital even when I had a complaint dealt with immediately and removed from bill
F. I.
Visited for breakfast, once we got in it slowly got busier and I think the service suffered as a result.
Told at 10.30am there was no toast left to order with our breakfast fry up and a minor thing was everyone got 1x fried egg with their breakfast when the menu stated 2 fried eggs.
Overall nice to sit in but slacking in service and poor on accomodating toast that early in the morning and didn't serve what was as described on menu. They don't offer alternative milks either which was dissapointing.
R. H.
Superb choice for a meal and drink. The steak pie was spot on and the neeps and tatties was excellent very well seasoned. Not over crowded service was excellent and the local lager was great. Very covid safe.
M. T.
Great bar and food place. We must have eaten and drunk here 4 times during our stay. Friendly staff and good food/drinks!
J. M.
Brilliant team and great food plus the beers given are great!
H. H.
Staff friendly, starters were lovely but burger for main was overcooked and chewy.
J. M.
Went for fish and chips. Would say that was a wrong choice. Heavily fried soaking in oil. Not what i have expected.
K. A.
Went in for some lunch, really nice place and the food is great. Much bigger on the inside than you would think so there is plenty of space to sit. Would definitely recommend if you are up for food or even just for a drink 👌
M.
Always pop in here when in Edinburgh.
So chilled and staff always great. Food and drink always spot on
K. H.
It was great to get into the Pub after a very bitterly cold day service and food was excellent.
D. W.
Nice place with helpful staff. Had breakfast there so didn't get the full bar ambiance. That said, food and service was very nice.
B. W.
Super friendly staff and substantial burgers. Couldn’t have eaten any more and really tasty. Accompanying cocktails were good too
R.
Really enjoyed our drinks here, we had some beers, the rhubarb cocktail which was superb and two mojitos which weren't sweet enough, but the atmosphere and staff more than made up for it
K. C.
The cocktails are to die for!!!! Very nice vibe. Friendly staff.
V. P.
Lovely place on leith street for drinks with friends. They were strict with their seating policy which is reassuring in these times of social distancing.
d. m.
Excellent bar. Great atmosphere. Again Nice decor.
K. P.
This is a lovely pub with great drinks and food. We ordered cocktails which were delicious and a food sharing platter which was plentiful. Will definitely return here
I. L.
Very good food and the service even better.
J. C.
Good staff and service, not too badly priced!
A. B.

A. M.
Nice bar for a relaxing drink. Didn't eat but the food I saw looked very tasty
G. T.
Great place but freezing cold with the door open all the time. Amazing French martini. One to order!
y. l.
Nice wee meal today when visiting Edinburgh today. Highly recommend it.
A. B.
Nice and friendly bar to catchup with friends. Not the largest selection of beers but pleasant enough. Would revisit though.
A. M.
Only went for drinks but enjoyed the cocktails
L. J. W.
Nice bar/restraunt ordered two sandwiches got wrong food but still very tasty!
A. O.
Nice atmosphere, good drinks and affordable price 👌 it's 5min walk from Waverly train station and Princess Street. Recommend
C. M.
Lovely atmosphere good place for any age group
M. M.
Thank you. Fully recommend!
J. N.
Great atmosphere, friendly environment and good entertainment
S. L.
Nice decor and vibe. Service sub-par. Man with beard rude. Seemed stretched with lack of attentiveness. Food average.
H. H.
Attractive bar/restaurant. Blindingly good cocktails. My fish was a wash out. Limp batter and disintegrating fish rather than flakey. Shame.
M.
Nice place to share some beers with friends. Good vibes and great atmosphere. Close to the Waverley station. The music is a bit loud sometimes.
A. C.
Lovely meals and great service.
G. R.
Tasty steak and Guinness pie, interesting cocktails, nice atmosphere. Way too expensive, though.
J. E.
Great atmosphere nice little bar
S. F.
Friendly staff, great beer and cider choices and excellent cocktails
G. T.
Very good place to eat and have drinks at the bar. Staff are very welcoming and funny.
j. a.
Had a very nice cajun chicken warm salad and husband enjoyed a HUGE 'el papa' burger.
2. C. D.
The dj down stairs on the night we were there was amazing . Fabulous music.bar staff were great and helpful. Would totally recommend
L. S.
Good food, lovely service.
L. M.
Such a nice friendly atmosphere. Drinks well priced. Only had wee light nights butsovtaty snd good value for money. Wifhvwe had gone here for dinner.
S. A.
Good place to go for drinks. I would not recommend for food or large parties. The bar staff were good. They were a bit overwhelmed by a large party and borderline rude because of that. They could turn a large party down if it wasn't to their liking. The food was okish. If the menu could explain that the burgers doesn't come with chips it would be great. The waiter serving us was very rude and made some of us unwelcome and uncomfortable. The bar staff made up for it .
T. B.
The Newsroom is where I got to try my very 1st haggis. It was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. The staff Kinley and Gregor were excellent, in this current climate they ensured the safety of everyone, whilst still making us all feel relaxed and welcome. Thank you both for a lovely experience. Next time we visit Scotland we'll definitely be back. 😊 xx
T. B.
Visited the place while was shopping at new St James Shopping Centre the pub just across the road thought would give try. Good safe service, nice range food, staff friendly would reccommend the place for visit when your in town.
b.
Lovely fresh atmosphere. Very interesting menu. Vegi haggis with I crisp batter which melted in the mouth. Friendly staff. Even though the places was heaving we got excellent service. The price was great for a tasty meal in a special place. Thank you.
O. B.
Great staff; great cocktails
W. Y.
Had a lovely lunch with a couple of drinks. Staff were very attentive especially a young man called Gregor who was working his socks off in our section👍
M. L.
Stopped by for a pint. Group of 5. We had a great time.
S. P.
Had lunch and it was great. I'm vegetarian and they adjusted a meal so I could eat it. The service was good and very Covid safe.
N. B.
Friendly service and good bar food. Great mushroom and haggis!
D. M.
Good sized portions and excellent service. The veggie burger was delicious. Tried their deep fried mars bar and surprisingly v tasty 😋. Vegetarian options are very limited hence my 3 star rating.
J. G.
Stopped in for a beer and had some haggis frites which were amazing!
d. w.
Very cool bar and restaurant staff very friendly and helpful excellent food loved this place
M. C.
Great cocktails, great staff and great ambience!
J. P.
Absolutely loved it! Staff was wonderful! Flights of whiskey delicious
A. T.
I booked a table for me and my partner. We arrived and were shown to our table. Staff could not have been any nicer to us. Nothing was a problem to them. We had same lady (Holly) serve us all night she looked after us like we were VIPs all night. She never stopped smiling and ensuring our comfort. The food was so delicious I was gutted I didn't complete my meal. I was so full I felt like I was going to need to be rolled home. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants fantastic service and food.
A. C.
Loved it visited several times food was beautiful
P.
A great bar with friendly staff. Standard Edinburgh for prices for the city centre. Good atmosphere every time I have visited.
S. P.
Decent grub, nice pint and excellent service just like the sister bar the pipers rest. Ideally situated for a bite before or after shopping in st james rather than paying the inflated prices in there
A. R.
This is a great bar for after work drinks, not too fussy and drinks are reasonable for near the centre of town. Nice chilled vibe and the decor is very cool. In summer it's great with the windows open wide, except when the traffic stalls by your table for too long. Cocktail menu is good and the wine and beer selection is fair. Haven't eaten there but have heard good things. The toilet cubicles are tiny though - why do planners do that??
S. E.
When walking around Edinburgh centre it is easy to underestimate the impact of the hills. Once we'd negotiated the walk up to and around the castle we decided we'd earned a pint (or two).
The Royal Mile pubs were still busy with the lunchtime crowds so we popped our heads through the door here, lucked into a couple of freshly-vacated seats and rested a while with a much needed beer.
Decent range of draft and bottled beers and happy to serve tea and coffee too. Quick, friendly bar staff are always welcome too and the Newsroom has plenty of these.
Well worth a visit.
R. A.
Always wanted to visit this place because of the cool lights it has in the window. Went in for lunch for the first time and the waitress we had was lovely and so approachable. I ordered vegetable soup not expecting anything special but it was amazing! And for some reason it stayed hot right to the last spoonful - don't know how they achieved that but it really was lovely. Reasonably priced too. Definitely go there again!
X.
Really interesting pub with nice furniture.
Good customer service. The table stuff was really friendly.
Burger was ok for a quick bite. Dessert was really tasty. I loved the chocolate fudge cake. I definitely recommend it.
D. S.
Great bar. Lovely staff and relaxed atmosphere.
s. m.
Excellent service from very pleasant staff, sharing platter well worth a shout, first time in , will definitely try it again, Moretti on draft big plus.
C. S.
Fantastic meal, one of the best meals I have ever had. The topped fries are unreal
C. N.
Great place for after work drinks. A wee bit busy but they put the times on the booked table markers so you can see if you can use that table before the booking. Very warm and friendly atmosphere - lots of laughter and chatting going on.

Really lovely bar. I havent eaten here but the drinks go down a treat! Nice decor, clean toilets and kind staff.
They also have wee cards that allow you to donate and pay for xmas dinner for the homeless.
I'll be coming back.
J. H.
This bar is in a great location. I can never work it out though, I feel like I only ever come here because of convenience and am usually quite pleasantly surprised. I don't particularly like the atmosphere, it is trying to be quite grand and posh I think. The cocktails are nice but I remember drinks in general being quite expensive. I would never and have never chosen to come here but when I do it's okay.
C. H.
The staff were nice and the wine list pretty good. I love the retro style lighting in the windows and the big central bar but I have to say the bar snacks we had were just awful. Really greasy goujon things and haggis balls in a ton of oily batter and not very exciting chips.
Good for a quick drink as its really central but definitely wont try eating again.
C. B.
Bit loud and busy but it was Saturday Easter weekend
O. I.
Nice place to drink something when is raining 😉
J. R.
Food was perfectly okay. Many items on the menu were no longer available. Short-staffed - the waitress was clearly overwhelmed. Bought a burger, no fries or sides, but was cheaper for it. Was not offered ketchup or any other condiment. Waited a while for service. Free WiFi was open and fast. Atmosphere was okay. Good music.
C. C.
Warm, roomy pub with more table spots than some of the other smaller ones.
A. C.
Food and service good but didn't have many things on the menu
M. S.
Thought the food and the staff were great especially with how the dealt with the middle age man who was overly upset that the staff could not read his mind.
M. N.
Just came in for some drinks. Seemed like they took a while to make, but turns out one of them wasn't exactly tasty.
J. M.
Staff very friendly. Lovely interior nice and clean and the lights made the place look very relaxed. Only went in for a few drinks but will definitely be back to try the food next time.
M. H.
Stopped in for lunch before spending the day in Edinburgh. The food was great, I ordered the Guiness Pie and Haggis fritters which were delicious. Coffee was on point! Service was friendly and prompt. The only downside was when the empty plates were taken away by the waiter and he spilt the haggis sauce all over my shoes. He cleaned it up but it ruined my shoes and I smelt like BBQ sauce for the rest of the day which was unlucky but disappointing none the less.
D. M.
Great food - really friendly staff and a good pint! What's not to like!!??
C. L.
Wide variety of drinks including gluten free beer on tap. Dr Paul’s quiz on Thursdays is excellent. However the food is poor. Clearly heated up as very little in the way of gluten free options.
B. F.
Great food always made welcome, special offer of 50% discount makes us visit regularly and have recommended it to friends and family
G. J.
Fantastic welcome, service and food
A. M.
Good vibes, tasty food and friendly staff. Bonus points for not needing a reservation on a Sunday evening.
D. M.
I’m a regular to this place as we quite often go to the quiz night here on a Thursday night. It definitely is one of the best quiz nights that we’ve tried as there’s always a lively atmosphere in the place.
Decent drinks selection available and there is decent pub grub available at reasonable prices too. Drinks aren’t cheap but that’s to be expected in such a central location.
Great place to go after work for a few pints, highly recommended.
S. S.
Nice little bar very popular on a Saturday. Tried to go on Saturday, but all tables were reserved. Booking is a must. Sunday evening was much nice. Managed to sample the burgers and they were delicious! Service was very good too.
N. A.
First day in Scotland for us, and we are definitely going to come back before we leave. Highly recommend this place, the Haggis and Bloody Mary was amazing! We finished with a sticky toffee pudding and that's definitely a must also! Enjoy
N. M.
A bar I've always bypassed because it looked like a place for weekend drinks for office workers. The staff were welcoming, helpful & friendly. They make a mean espresso martini & the food was top class.
N. H.
Been a good few times with work for lunch. The food is good filling lunch fare and service is reasonably quick. Guess since we've been back a few times must mean they are doing something right. Price wise it is what you expect to pay in this part of town. If you have food allergies, you may find the menu slightly more limited than other places
J. S.
Awesome selection of cocktails in a great atmosphere. Throughly enjoyed our visit
H. S.
Lovely waitress helped two old farts order cocktails in the new track and trace era. The cocktails were nearly as nice as the waitress.
R. Å.
Very helpful staff. If you are unsure of what beer to choose they will offer you something to taste. Much appreciated. They offer a variety of burgers and also some english or schottish dishes. A fair choice of beer and gin is displayed on the drink menu.
K. B.
Busy and cool bar. A great after work spot. Has a lot of quirky features and the staff are very speedy at busy times. I’ve never eaten here but the menu looks pretty good!
G. M.
Great atmosphere, excellent choice of drinks and the haggis was delicious.
C. H.
Great place with good atmos.. Only thing wrong was they included a vegetarian burger style meal in the main burger menu and guess what, we ordered 2 by mistake! they were however very nice but we felt they should have a separate veggie section on the menu to avoid confusion.
S. K.
Just happened to pass this place, decided to pop in and was delighted by the resulting experience. The food was excellent, menu choice was fine and service was also great. Prices also seemed reasonable for the quality of fayre. Would definitely go back next time I am in Edinburgh.
C. W.
Lovely food. Big portions (2 courses was too much for us) and staff were very nice and completely suited to the job. Our waiter had us laughing the whole time
S. R.
Lots of fried pub style grub, but so good handling any allergies and very poor allergy friendly offerings of any type. They just "leave it off" but charge you the same price. Lots of gins to choose from, plenty of beer too
W. C.
My wife got chicken and waffles and thinks it was decent. I got the meat pie and thought there was not enough meat in it. Everywhere else I've had it here in Scotland, I haven't had any broth left over at the end of my meal. However, when I ate this meat pie, all I had left by the end was a bowl of broth. Very different from the legit places out in Stirling etc. I would not return to The Newsroom. Not really a great place for tourists, except for the drinks, I guess. The haggis was ok, but nothing special, so don't get your hopes up.
M. G.
Great food, great drink selection, friendly staff and good prices.
G. M.
Great food and great prices.
G. B.
Tad expensive but it's Edinburgh city centre so only to be expected. Great atmosphere, clean and drinks as they should be - flowing 😀
K. J.
Good bar. Loved it. Bit quiet though for new years eve. Also one of the bouncers was rather aggressive slamming doors and stuff when a probably drunk person outside was antagonising him even though the bouncer was inside the bar.
D. S.
Comfortable/ interesting surroundings, the staff were really enthusiastic and welcoming. Drinks and food were really nice and reasonably priced...Great quality and a good selection
G. C.
Really nice atmosphere created by the friendly staff. All comfortable with good mixed of age groups. Food was excellent with the quality of the beef a particular stand out.
C. M.
Nice bar, friendly staff, drinks were really good, but was not mixed that well. Would recommend for a night out
L. D.
Nice pub with reasonable prices. A bit loud, but that's probably because I've been stuck in my quiet flat for the last year!
J. G.
Bouncing fun pub on a saturday nite
T. f.
Good food, friendly staff. Got served black burned portobellos at first, this was swiftly replaced by a whole new plate, and even deducted from the tab. Almost too fair! big compliment 👍
P. D.
Good atmosphere and polite and helpful staff. Food was very good and well presented.
R. H.
Excellent menu choice. Great staff. Very modern restaurant.
A. D.
A gem of a place, great food and vibe, very friendly, and zero-alcohol Heineken on Draft which was excellent! Kids loved the deep-fried Mars Bar dessert too.
A. R.
It is a very nice place to go and gets drinks (especially for cocktails)
N. S.
Beautiful place with an arty style.
The cocktails were vert strong and tasty on the same time. Thayer propose also a large range of food. We tasted the mexicain tapes with our cocktails and the mix was perfect!
If you are passing by, you should try it!
S. S.
Massive breakfast, very delicious 😋‼️ Great friendly staff and good value.
K. B.
Coolest bar and eaterie in Lieth I have been to. Local DJs after nine, great bar staff catering to your desires re gourmet standard food , cocktails etc Ambience is so cool 🤠 and relaxed you could not help chilling in this excellent establishment.
A. W.
Did this comfortable lounge bar and eatery used to be part of the News trade? Hence it's name, I am unsure. A stylish and popular bar near Princess Street and the Railway station, it has a good selection of beers and other drinks , but those on a budget beware, not the cheapest prices, 2 pints Heineken for £10. Novelty wise they brew their own gin on site, worth a try?
K. F.
Great food and delicious cocktails. Service was friendly and efficient. Also a convenient spot if you're out for the Fringe. Saw a couple shows in there.
L. W.
Amazing service and food. The staff were incredible and gave us so much information about the city for our first stay there and loved every minute of it. Highly recommend xx
j. b.
Nice pub where we went in for 1 and stayed for 2!! Pretty full on a Friday afternoon with prompt table service
P. R.
Great place to go for a drink in Edinburgh!
L. L.
Excellent food and service. Late lunch plenty of room to sit although I can imagine it gets busy at night. Pity there isn't a Newsroom in Nottingham!
C. B.
Good place too go great food friendly staff
G. C.
Very good food and friendly service!
M. H.
A nice bar with a kind of unique decor and theme to it - massive prints of celebrity obituaries from newspapers might not sound too appealing, but the place pulls it off. Food wise, think birders, wings, chicken burgers in waffles - it's American gourmet fast food and it is all pretty good. They have some nice beers on tap, including the Coast to Coast IPA, but they're definitely at the pricier end of Edinburgh pints - set your minimum at around £5+.
S. F.
Just had a drink but nice friendly staff nicely decorated and relaxing atmosphere
L. W.
Fantastic place. Friendly with great music and cocktails 🍹🍹
M. F.
Very good food and large portions, great atmosphere and service
N. H.
Warm interior and excellent range of drinks. Cosy yet modern.
E. M.
Excellent staff and adorable with our dog. Food is brilliant and the atmosphere is fantastic
J. N.
Great food. Friendly service. Visited mid-afternoon on a weekday, so it was quiet at the time. Will definitely be back.
L. P.
Loved this place! Great food. Great service! Cool place! When we come back to Edinburgh, we'll be stopping in here again! The Big Story burger is a hit!
a. d.
Trendy bar bistro, friendly staff great food and drinks menu. Good service, food arrived quickly and hot. Would recommend the pulled pork Nacho's, absolutely delicious.
L. A.
Visited this place 7th July 2021, lovely place, very friendly staff and amazing cocktails, very clean and inviting place, will definately be back x
C. U.
Incredible food, best burger I have ever had. Friendly staff and quick service. Cocktails were amazing also. Looking forward to going back there on my next trip.
T. M.
Cozy and warm. Too bad about all the construction out front.
S. K.
Really nice bar with a lively atmosphere and friendly staff.
M. W.
Fantastic food and cocktails. They had the friendliest staff working there. Great time and would definitely recommend.
M. K.
Nice vibe about the place, good spot for a drink.
R. C.
Great night out for drinks and relaxing time staff very helpful and will return thanks
G. a. S. M.
Good haggis, neeps and tatties, fish and chips, sticky toffee pudding and deep fried Mars bar. Window seats good for people watching in a relatively busy area.
J. R.
Dropped by late in the evening and this place was quiet, but walked by earlier and it was packed. The bar has a nice layout and is pretty open. I would return another time.
Always feel free to reach out to me on Twitter @joerazz
Y. G.
Friendly staff, good prices nice atmosphere
A. G.
The newsroom has a comfortable feel. They offer a variety of speciality cocktails, think "Passionberry Fizz" and some originals with a twist as well as the classics. They have a half dozen or so beers on tap and an equal number of burgers on the menu.
J. F.
Great value for the large portions
Great prices and friendly staff
Mind keep room for the deep fried Mars bar, you will love it
B. O.
Very nice meal and staff very friendly and the atmosphere was comfortable.
M.
Really nice place that we spent time, lovely bar but make sure you bring ID because they did put a bouncer on at a certain time, other customers really nice
d. m.
Great for drinks friendly staff very clean prices reasonable I call here often for coffee also food available and close to both centre's for nights out. Great place to start
M. F.
Great bar, with cool look. Food was very good. Deep fried Haggis was awesome in the burger. Would be back there if in the area.
T. E.
Dreary, expensive and mostly forgettable punter trap. Had some soul music mp3's on but there's nowhere to dance, and nobody here looks like they would dance even if there was. Extra star because at least the barman had a sense of humour.
A. S.
I was given skooshy tonic in my gin without being asked what I wanted (don't like skooshy mixers) witnessed a member of staff being (just a little) rude to a customer but there was no apparent reason, not impressed
K. M.
Actually one of the best burgers I've had in ages, nice one, and fair drink selection too. The service staff was excellent on the night. Bit annoying it's so popular because of their room hire, but I suppose that's not their fault is it.
E. C.
Good Central location with food and excellent drinks menu
G. V.
Good food, and reasonably priced drinks. It is always fairly busy, though the atmosphere could be better. Generally I find myself moving on in search of something better after a couple of drinks.
K. O.
Great cocktails if a little more expensive than I'm used to but definitely worth it.
T.
Fabulous decor but otherwise nothing sticks out in a city with older pubs and friendlier service. I actually stopped in for a pint because I kept passing it on my travels but wasn't impressed with the prices or service.
B. M.
Great atmosphere, great music, food amazing! Bar staff brilliant and gorgeous cocktails and alcohol choice!
J. F.
Nice bar, great staff
E. W.
Trendy decor and some fancy indie ales. Downstairs is a reasonable venue with a sort-of green room. I have nothing but treasured memories of the Fringe in this bar
C. W.
Great food and service
S. B.
Busy Friday at Christmas but one barmaid in particular was pretty short and abrupt at ordering you to move. Trouble is they had let so many customers in there was nowhere to move too...
M. J.
Nice drinks, quite-good food and really great service crew. Definately better place to drink than to eat, but worth visiting.
G. M.
Food and service is excellent. Really nice atmosphere and friendly.
R. o.
Great food and drink selection. Nice atmosphere.
T. K. S.
The food - soup of the day (sweet potato, chilli and coconut) was delicious. Main course was vegetarian haggis, neeps and tatties..... Unrivalled!!! Can't wait to return..!!
J. M. (.
Reasonably priced for lunch in a cosy environment
L. H.
Great vibe. Super friendly staff. Good food and beer. Definely recommend.
R. L.
An amazing place with a fantastic atmosphere, music, drinks and food!!
A. S.
Had a really nice chicken burger here. Great selection of drinks too. A nice place for a beer.
V. D.
Delicious food, great friendly service and good atmosphere. We will return on our next visit.
R. B.
Extensive cocktail menu, friendly staff. Cocktails to Suit all tastes and staff were happy to recommend as required. Didn't get to eat here
G. G.
Not very tasty food. Service average or bit lower. Probably for beers is a good place, it has good music.
L. R.
Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and good food! Not too pricey. Traditional food as well as new interpretations of it.
D. H.
Nice classy pub on leith street that is great for meetups, and first dates. Has lost a little of its character since its 2013 refurbishment, replacing the comfy window couches (which were great for people watching) with much taller tables and chairs. Though the incandescent light bulbs in jars that litter the bar are a nice touch. The Newsroom offers a wide variety of drinks and cocktails, I'm a bit partial to a nice bourbon and it's pleasing to see a good range of Jack Daniels, Jim Beam and the awesome Woodland Reserve. All a bit expensive though as draught and bottled beer starts from £3.60, a round here will hit you hard in the pocket.
C. S.
Went here before going to Arhtur's Seat. The haggis was great. It is a little spicy with the whiskey sauce but I loved it.
J. M.
Brilliant cocktail menu, good food and one of the few places in Edinburgh serving Krustovice on draft. Usually busy so booking recommended.
V. A.
Great cocktails friendly staff...even making a mararita which we couldn't find on the menu and coming back to check that it was fine...well done...will be back when in Edinburgh next.
J. M.
Good place to catch up with friends, you can book in advance and meet with more than 10 people at once. Drinks and food available for a good price and good quality and the place itself is quite cosy and original!
A. G.
Been in this place few times before..short staff this time plus mixed up order, music too loud to hold conversion.
Would go back for a drink but not for food.
A. O.
Good food and great staff what more can you ask for.
Well done.
D. A.
Good food. Good staff. Certainly more a place for a meal and a drink than sitting in for a drinking session.
D. W.
Very good food, good service, recommend booking.
K. S.
I have been going to the Newsroom off and on for years. It always delivers great service, food & drinks, ambience and music. Perfect for nights out with friends.
J. B.
Very good service, big sortiment of beer, very good fish n chips and fast served.
Nice place!
B. K.
Very nice wee pub,
C. D.
Nice place, good food and atmosphere, helpful staff
P. R.
Pretty chilled place to have a few after work, and livens up at the weekend. Food is decent enough and the drinks selection is pretty comprehensive.
W. M.
Was beautiful and had a nice atmosphere! The server was a little slow but overall a great bar.
R. B.
The nachos. ....oh the nachos! And a bottle of shiraz. It was crazy busy but staff were brilliant, food was brilliant, thought the wine was very well priced, great atmosphere and customers were also welcoming!
V. G.
Nice and cosy atmoshpere
J. G.
First time in this bar but won't be the last food was superb atmosphere fantastic service absolutely spot on.
m. r.
Very good food - the portions are huge so beware. Great beers 🍻
M.
Poor Food nice venue reasonable price.
m. m.
Great food, beers and wines. Friendly staff. Busy with all ages. Great stop on the way to the theatre or cinema
P. C.
Cracking breakfast, good service from friendly staff, handily situated just off princes street.
A. F. A.
The place was very nice, but my cocktail wasn't good at all. I ordered a long island iced tea and it didn't really taste as such.
L. M.
Really nice bar with friendly staff and a good selection of food and drinks
S. P. D.
Great bar with a nice atmosphere in a brilliant location. Not enough seating though. Thats lost it a star
I. P.
Nice food, good selection of drinks but, in common with many pubs of this type, has "music" thudding away, making normal conversation impossible.
L. O.
Definitely worth a visit . Food was superb, tasty and good sized portions, and the staff were nice and friendly.
M. D. B.
We had a nice meal here, very good Haggis and fish, also the beer was good!Prices ok!
L. M.
It's a conveniently located bar for meeting basically anyone in Edinburgh. The service and drinks are fine, but nothing particularly stands out.
A. M.
Vibrant atmosphere and food not too expensive.
S. M.
Cocktails are fine. Haven't tried the food yet but the mood and ambiance are alright.
M. B.
Such nice staff, wonderful visual aesthetic and tasty cocktails.
E. M.
A nice wee place for a drinks, although sometimes you can smell the toilets from your seat - not an excellent quality. Well decorated and has a bit of buzz about it.
M. P.
Good service. Looks like locals and tourists go here. Table service makes this a restful stop while touring the town
S. R.
Great atmosphere, lovely staff and nice pub food, recommended!
D. T.
This place is amazing food is great Service was great too and waiters were so friendly would definitely recommend 😁
M. S.
Close by Courtyard Marriott and good food!
D. D.
Lovely food, great waitstaff, comic acts downstairs..all you could ask for in 1 location.
M. M.
Had some great cocktails that have fallen away slightly. Still a great place for drinking and a brilliant meet up spot.
D. P.
Great burgers, they taste homemade.
J. S.
Great bar, good food and right in the heart of the city.
G. M.
Had lunch with friends, the food was very good, and the staff were very friendly and attentive thank for a lovely afternoon.
J. S.

Good themed pub, great selection of drinks, slightly expensive but nice setting
J. B.
Great bar. Great laid back food (love the wings)
K. “. H.
Enjoyed it there nice friendly staff
Modern bar
Good atmosphere.
E. G.
Cocktails were nice. Average prices but felt it lacked atmosphere even on Fringe weekend
J. P.
Burgers arent bad and cocktails are pretty good, but the place is a bit crammed, food overall didn't have a ton of flavor, and lacked creativity.
B. B.
It's nice but at £5 a pint go to the omni centre may not be as nice but you will still have some money left
V. R.
Food is better than their beer selection, good for a quick catchup with friends.
P. S.
Really nice place to have a drink. Good choices of gin. Great
P. T.
Very happy with the food and the fact a lot of the beer, if not all is produced in Scotland, well done..... there should be more of these about.
D. t. m.
Small but great aesthetics and atmosphere. Good selection of drinks.
S. S.
Enjoyed a tasty meal with an Edinburgh gin and tonic. Great service too in a good atmosphere.
j. c.
The food is wonderfully weird, the atmosphere really good and the staff really nice.
J. C.
Nice pub...Good service...clean and well organised with the social distancing.

Warm, friendly.. good beer... and above all I'm coming back...say no more:-)

A. S.
Nice venue and recommend the nachos wee portion.
d. r.
It's ok
e. w.
Fantastic food and the duty manager was very nice and professional when there was an issue in the kitchen. He went out his way to resolve this issue.
D. M.
Terrific place for a quick dinner. Awesome pub food and interesting drink specials! !
A. J.
Very loud music, but nice nachos and good selection of drinks. Would recommend for night outings not for casual eating in afternoon
P. L. S.
Great service, good drinks and food was great! Definitely visit again.
B. D.
Great atmosphere. Fish and chips were excellent. Service was great.
N. S.
A theme bar with good pub food. The menu is printed in form of a newspaper. Nice idea but not so easy to choose from.
h. g.
AMAZING!! The best cocktails, food, staff and ambience!! Always have the best time here!!
M. C.
Mirror by the loo is annoying, as is the magazine's on the barrels so you can never find a good place to put your drink. Could never find a drink I liked in there too.
E. L.
Excellent service, quick and responsive staff. 100% recommend
H. E.
Amazing atmosphere and ambience
H. W.
Great selection of drinks and great service.
J. K.
One of the favourite pubs in Edinburgh, busy on the weekends, but very cosy and Krusovice beer adds even more points.
E. C.
Nice little bar in the heart of Edinburgh. The cocktails look great, taste nice, but little alcohol in the drinks.
K. L.
Great food and atmosphere, live shows and friendly staff.
E. N.
A lovely lunch and great service after a great time at The Fringe. A lovely end to my break in Edinburgh.
P. G.
First time in here today the best fish & chips ever service brilliant can't wait to go back.
K. R.

C. B.
Decent bar with warm friendly feel. Perfect for a few after work pints
R. P. G.
Great place for drinks before heading to the playhouse which is only 2 minutes walk away from here. Misses out on a star due to price.
E. W.
Bit noisy and busy but had good food and lovely folks there too
M. C.
Definitively not the best burger in town. Quite dry, no sauce in it... meat not really good. Go for something else on the menu.
C. M.
Great bar but advertising to charge your phone but no USB 2... Using my last 1% to vocalise my discontent... (insert sad face)
P. M.
Great food and cocktails plus staff very helpful
R. W.
Tasty food and exceptional service. Also full of locals unlike the nearby touristy areas.
T. R.
Good food, good beer, good prices, good location. Alround good I'd say. 🙂

There was a lovely barman called George who wrote a lovely note in the receipt and it made my mother's night. How kind
A. S.
Excellent food and great service 👍
D. M.
Nice service, tasty food, good beer!
E.
Excellent place for a beer or a drink. Great selection of gin.
b. m.
Nice bar, but the beer prices are shocking. I only had one.
K. W.
Delicious cocktails and a great vibe!
M.
Standard pub that has some weird decor (obituaries) that makes the experience a but odd. There are better pubs in the same area.
G. M.
Nice food. Very nice decor. Alcohol selection could be better.
