Reviews of The Palmerston
O. W.
Great experience on a Sunday afternoon at The Palmerston. Busy that day with couples and groups. Staff certainly kept busy!
Food was great. Full of flavour and hearty. Just what we needed on a cold wet day (hey it's Edinburgh). Meat courses in particular were the stand out. Dessert for us the weakest.
Word of warning. My initial 3 choices for each course had sold out! But there was enough range in the menu to substitute.
Overall, worth a visit...just make sure you get there early.
C.
Very friendly services. Casual atmosphere make you feel relaxing. Value for money the 3 course set lunch we ordered. Portion was generous. The red wine and lamb we ordered were okay but not superb.

Was such a wonderful experience as soon as I stepped inside.
I’ve been for a lunch and a private event, and both times the food was on point, the staff was incredibly hospitable, and the environment was welcoming, cozy, and beautiful. I love that everything is super locally sourced and so thought out - it’s especially a treat that there’s a new menu each day. I can’t wait to come back again!
Oh, and it’s a very dog friendly restaurant which definitely earns it extra bonus points.

After all the great reviews I'd read about the Palmerston I found my visit disappointing. The staff were really friendly, the complementary bread was great but the rest of the food with the possible exception of the dessert was decidedly underwhelming.
I certainly won't be in hurry to go back.

I came here for dinner with my brother and was absolutely blown away with how amazing this restaurant is. Simple but delicious dishes made with incredibly fresh ingredients. We couldn't decide what to order but the friendly and helpful staff helped us choose and even suggested some cracking wines to go with our meal. It was so good that we came back for Sunday lunch the next day to try the pie - it did not disappoint!
I will definitely be back.

The most amazing bakery products you can find in Edinburgh ( far better than most Parisian ones ) , the loveliest people working there and the food is just incredible. Something to try while In Edinburgh 🥰
M. S.
A well-thought and carefully executed menu which changes daily. Add to this attentive staff and unique interior (the restaurant is located in a former bank). At the same time, the atmosphere is not pretentious at all. The value for money ratio is very high here.

By far the most exciting restaurant in Edinburgh!
Have been a handful of times and the menu always has something new to offer, as well as the incredible wine list.
Not only do they do a set lunch alongside a la carte, make sure you head there early for coffee and pastries in the morning!
The team are great and the space is beautiful too. Good vibes all round.

Absolutely delicious food served by a great team. The atmosphere was great, drinks were lovely and food was perfect. A fantastic new restaurant in Edinburgh that you need to check out!

ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING
I booked a table for two on a Friday at 6pm. This was one of the only times on that day that was available. After being seated we were given bread which had a lovely crunchy crust and tasted great. The waitress made us feel very welcome and comfortable.
This restaurant does one of my favourite things which is having an ever changing menu depending on the season and ingredients they have in.
To start off, we got the Mackerel with a caper remoulade. The fish was so fresh and delicate with a beautiful subtle salty taste. The creamy remoulade was also fresh and crunchy, and thus paired excellently with the slices of fish.
Following that, I got the Jacobs sheep which was amazing! The meat was so juicy and tender. Every bite was succulent and satisfying. There was a nice accompaniment of chickpeas and greens which were perfectly cooked. Everything lay upon a beautiful sweet and slightly spicy jus. At the end of the meal I got some more bread just to soak up every bit that was left.
I also got to try the braised beef shins which were practically falling apart because it was so succulent. Beautiful creamy mashed potatoes on the side as well.
Finally we got the chocolate mousse for dessert which was nice but I wouldn't come back for it.
Overall it was amazing and very memorable. Literally making my mouth water thinking about having it again soon.

No Wi-Fi. Great to be solo at the bar. Friendly knowledgeable staff. Delicious food (I’m a food professional with very high standards.)
For morning pastries go early. Best stuff comes out at 10am.

A bit pricey but absolutely worth it. Everything was insanely delicious, even down to the sodas, made in house. I got the pasta and it was unreal how tasty it was.

During our stay in Edinburgh our Airbnb was directly opposite the Palmerston and so we fully took advantage of their coffee and pastries in the morning. Excellent coffee and delicious selection of daily changing pastries. We also visited for Sunday dinner and had a fantastic time. The menu selection was varied and every dish was delicious and the wine also great. The staff were all super friendly and clearly passionate about the food they were serving. Would love to return!

The best cinnamon bun I have ever eaten. Perfect balance between flakey pastry and bread, so soft in the centre. Amazing.
H.
A happy start to the New Year of food with pastries. Divine, buttery, crisp layers. And they also do a great flat white - who knew!
S.
Popped in for a coffee on our way to the train station and very glad we did. The almond croissant was the best I have ever tasted 😋. Great coffee too and the staff all seemed really happy and upbeat. Just great😁
C.
Well sourced ingredients cooked with love and served without pretension or fuss. Plating generous and rustic, and all the better for it! Highly recommended for a relaxed, delicious evening. Interesting wine list too.
M. M.
Lovely ambience, friendly, professional and knowledgeable staff. Exquisite food with prompt service. And probably one of the most eclectic and intriguing wine lists I've seen in a long time. Just what Edinburgh was in need of to liven up the fine dining scene. Thank you for a lovely evening. Thoroughly recommended
G. K.
Lives up to it's growing reputation. Great food and service. Bread was amazing.
S. W.
Very good food; simple but very tasty ingredients.
The waiters were also extremely good, helpful and polite. They recommended a delicious wine when asked.

Above average pricing, good starters, good desserts
H. T.
Great food, welcoming staff and all round enjoyable experience! Will definitely be back!
B. C.
Solid food. Got the three course lunch. Service was slow… Highlights of the meal were the soup and the sorbet!
G. G.
If there was space for 6 stars I would have added it. It is rare indeed to come across staff that almost outshone the food. This was the case here. Rebecca (the lass who served us) had it all. Depth of knowledge about the food, humour, engagement and wit. All without being over burdening . Oh nd that bread !!
P. C.
Great food superb value varied menu terrific service. The rum and raisin ice cream was marvellous

A little jewel. Great service. Fantastic food and the best fresh bread in Edinburgh.

Wonderfully exciting new restaurant in Edinburgh.. immediate buzz as you walk into the restaurant with amazing food smells wafting out of the kitchen..
Warm and friendly staff with excellent knowledge of the menu when I had questions. Exciting wine list which my old man had a lot of fun finding some wines for each course..
Food was excellent, packed with flavour and well presented.. sadly I forgot to take photos as I was so keen to get stuck into my food!!
I had partridge wrapped in pasta (similar to ravioli but different name), for main I had a beautiful slice of rump (roasted) with amazing chips.. raspberry sorbet for desert. All local produce which I really love..
Thoroughly recommend this restaurant, I’ll surely be back soon..
Many thanks Palmerston Team for a wonderful evening! 👍🏼👍🏼

Excellent experience, food was flawless, staff were personable and made us feel very welcome and relaxed, the building is beautiful. Wine list was fantastic with a huge range of styles and price points, theres something fir everyone. Really there's nothing I would change.

Sadly we were underwhelmed with our visit to The Palmerston. We may have ordered badly as some of the food in other reviews looks really tasty but our meals were average. I'd also love to know the mark-up on the Carrot starter that was basically a raw carrot in a dressing for £8.
Most of the staff were friendly and our booking was kindly squeezed in at the last minute but I wouldn't rush back for any of the dishes we ordered.
S. P.
Cracking wine list with plenty of unique, characterful wines, excellent food - while the set menu is a steal the a la carte is too tempting - and friendly, knowledgeable staff. Can't wait to visit again!
E. A.
A really wonderful meal - great, friendly and helpful service, lovely drinks, and without a doubt the best pie I've ever had in my life. We will be back, and will recommend the Palmerston widely.
a. c.
The cooking reminds me off St. John - which is a good thing. Thankfully no haggis bon bons, Stornoway black pudding (nothing wrong with Stornoway black pudding by the way) or whisky sauces. Just top ingredients, though not always immediately familiar to many, cooked simply and thoughtfully. Nice room too.
A. H.
Love seeing something like this go in rather than another chain or something that no one local wants.
Food is uncomplicated bistro classics that are super light and tasty. Nice drinks menu, great coffee and pastries too. Staff were all super friendly as well.
Prices are toward the top end for a bistro so we won't be having every supper here, but instead will be a nice treat for us - prices definitely reflect the quality of the food.
c. r.
Am I missing something or has the chef changed? Nice staff, lovely bread but distinctly average food. I don’t think I’d return.
L. Q.
This place is amazing. Not only is the food out of this world, the staff are super friendly and helpful, you can tell they love what they do. This is my first stop when I'm next in Edinburgh.
H. T.
Great food, welcoming staff and all round enjoyable experience! Will definitely be back!
M. L.
Great service and fantastic food. The fish was excellent and the deserts were even better. We will be back soon!
J. H.
Food was fine, wine was decent but like most places in Edinburgh these days, house wine is way overpriced, and it had a young vibe. In fact, for me, a bit too young and noisy. But I hope it does well.
C. H.
Went to try their pastries and coffee this morning. Both were delicious. We will definitely be back for lunch and dinner next! Really lovely guy serving us as well. Don't have any photos of the food as we inhaled it!
J. W.
We were walking from Haymarket to Princes Street on a Sunday morning. Suddenly it started raining. We looked around for shelter. There was the Palmerston! Coffee seemed like a good idea so in we went. Great cup of coffee, friendly and attentive staff in premises that were up to date but had retained the feel of the original building. On the bar was a display of tasty looking bread. Fresh home made that morning, and would we like to try a sample? Delicious crusty artisan sourdough.
When the sun came out, we left with loaves in a bag, glad that it had rained when it did!
W. R.
Excellent, high quality, honest food. Seasonal ingredients prepared with care and thought rather than pomp. Totally delicious. The bakery is also excellent, bread you can just scoff and thoughly enjoy, that's what it's supposed to taste like.
c. s.
Highly recommend. Front of house staff have always tried to fit in bookings even if last minute. Prompt drinks and bread for the table, which is necessary as you can smell the in house bakery as soon as you walk in! Food is novel, exciting and consistent. Even when I don’t know what exactly the dish will comprise, I’ve learnt after a few visits that it will be executed well so I trust the kitchen! My favourite aspect (after the wine) is the atmosphere; welcoming, knowledgable and calm. My husband won’t let me paint our house ‘Palmerston Green’ which is upsetting but all the more reason to go back soon and enjoy the restaurant.
J. P.
Unquestionably the most exciting restaurant in Edinburgh right now. Wine, food and service are all absolutely outstanding.
G. M.
Brilliant food (and the lunch menu in particular is excellent value at 3 courses for £19!). Service was warm and friendly, too.
G.
Absolutely fantastic food, service and drinks. Will be returning again very soon.
N.
Great food, drink and wine. Atmosphere and service was excellent. Thanks again!

My new favourite restaurant in Edinburgh. Food was delicious, ambience great, service great!
J. L.
I popped in with my wee son for a quick drink. Beautiful place with sunny vintage windows.

The Palmerston is a fabulous addition to Edinburgh’s dining scene. James and his staff are relaxed, friendly and knowledgable; the vibe is classy but chilled, and the food is equally high quality without being pretentious. The starter of clams was super fresh and super delicious, and a generous monkfish main with two superb wines. It’s a perfect blend of flavour, choice and style. I will definitely be back.
D. G.
Friend and I ate there last night. Great food from the back of house. Really. And a wonderfully genuinely friendly and helpful team front of house.
Will be recommending to all my friends.
A. M.
Above average pricing, good starters, good desserts
A. M.
Good bread and homemade soft drinks,I had the onion toast
O. G.
Amazing food, excellent service, lovely space. Only improvement would be the Guinness pour, rather disappointing
I. R.
Great venue, amazing starters and snacks. The mains though good were a little disappointing, the venison quality and quantity was fantastic but it didn't taste of much and it needed something more!
M.
This is a decent local joint, no more, no less. Good produce, dishes uncomplicated and pleasant, though no finesse or spark. Not enough to draw me back, but if somebody took me there I would not be desperate.
N. J.
The most delicious pastries and bread...cannot wait to come for dinner soon.
K. P.
Not sure there is another place like this in Edinburgh. Really local and current menu. Small plates and seasonal mains. Probably the best bread in town - sourdough and baguettes.

I really enjoyed everything at The Palmerston! Waiters and bartenders were very knowledgeable about their menu. It was a lovely evening! I wish I live a bit closer..!
P. M.
Such an amazing experience, everyone there is so friendly and knowledgeable, great wine selection and incredible food made from top quality ingredients.
N. C.
Very 'echo-y' due to stone floors and sparse furniture. Good pastries and coffee. Friendly staff and interesting artwork on the walls.
B. V.
Great food and atmosphere, very friendly staff we felt like home. Only local products, very tasty and well presented food. Will definetely come back 😊
G. C.
Fantastic food and super service. Definitely go!

I haven't been but intend to; the reason that I'm leaving this review is, as a business owner, I understand how hurtful malicious 1-star reviews can be, particularly so when they're not even relevant to the service provided. Good luck with everything, guys!

(Translated) A must-see restaurant in Edinburgh. Recently opened in 2021. Everything is done on site from delicatessen, butcher to bakery and pastry. Systematic use of local products. Team of young experienced cooks of different nationalities (including a Frenchman from Vendée) who are committed to offering innovative cuisine that is both delicious and generous with high quality local products.
Perfect welcome by a very friendly team.
More than reasonable value for money given the quality of the products used.
I recommend making a reservation if you want to be sure of getting a table, given that the quality of this restaurant has not escaped the notice of customers who want to have a great time in a spacious and warm setting.
The card is constantly renewed according to arrivals.
A big congratulations to all the teams and a big thank you.
(Original)
