Reviews of The Perch
G. W.
Absolutely stunning meal. One of those that makes you go "wow" at every bite. Everything was delicious but the spiced duck breast really blew us away - has to be one of the most delicious flavourful dishes I've had in a long while. Not to mention the sticky toffee pudding is the best I've ever had (and I've had a few!).
This is a little hidden gem, great atmosphere and service. Will now be my go-to for celebration meals. Don't miss out, this is a must-try!
S. B.
A beautiful lunch in the new town. Pared back, reasonably priced set menu. Good portion sizes and I enjoyed every mouthful! Will definitely be back!
A. R. (.
Top notch, best meal I've had of 2022 thus far. Presentation was thoughtful but not over the top. Flavor and texture followed suit. The venison with the creamy horseradish sauce blew me away. Every bite had me delighted.
L. L.
The Sunday roast was good but a bit overcooked. The overall portions and value for money was not great but the food was very tasty. Loved the atmosphere and the waiters were very nice !
A. A.
Amazing, the duck breast and the aracini are really good. Maybe the best tasting dishes I have tried in the city. Plus, the place is cozy and attention is great also.
C.
Sunday lunch on a rugby weekend. Really enjoyable lunch. Great service though very busy. Accommodated our various requests and though busy they were always available with a cheery response. Good wholesome bistro menu and amazing tender Sunday roast. In a city centre being taken over by amateurs and chains (sometimes at the same time) this was a great choice. Can't wait to come back.

We’re looking for a fancy restaurant in Edinburgh and we found the Perch restauran by a chance. The prices in the menu was reasonable, especially for the launch set menu, where you can have 3 courses for less than 17 pound. We took that offer and chose couscous salad, Haggis, and panna cotta for dessert and we had steak dish from the main menu and mac&cheese as a side. All of them were perfect and delicious, but maybe the steak dish was a little bit small portion. The waiter is very friendly and happy to answer any question we had regarding the food. The service is very excellent. I highly recommend to go to this restaurant if you’re looking for high quality food with good price.
C. M.
We decided to try this place as it was close to our hotel and we were delighted when we left. Food was brilliant and so were the local drinks, highly recommend!
E. M.
Beautiful decor and nicely tucked away from the busy city, food was absolutely delicious and staff were friendly.
D. C.
One of the best meals we’ve had in Scotland over the past two weeks. Everything was delicious and like I saw someone else commented, we were saying wow that’s delicious after each bite. Great and friendly service to boot. Would highly recommend.
M. M.
Absolutely adored our visit to The Perch. The wine list is very nice with lots of great options, which the staff were happy to make recommendations. The food was SO nicely seasoned and you could tell that the ingredients were all fresh and prepared with care.
M. A. F.
Had an absolute incredible experience at The Perch for dinner. From their service, to their drinks to the divine food. Was by far the best food we had in Scotland. The rack of lamb was cooked perfectly and so tender. The sticky toffee pudding I am still dreaming about to this day.
A. R.
Had an amazing lunch today. The Venison tasted amazing and the sticky toffee pudding was to die for! It was very reasonable in price with a lovely ambience and the service was fantastic. I would highly recommend this beautiful wee restaurant as I intend to visit regularly.
C. B.
The staff were great and the food even better! Our food came out hot and delicious, with no complaints to speak of. The Perch is an intimate, cosy gem which you would never notice walking down the street.
J. S.
We had a fantastic meal at The Perch yesterday evening - every dish was absolutely delicious (and the STP was served in a bowl of sauce, perfection!) Immediately we were made to feel so welcome by the staff, and I can’t commend their service more. The atmosphere was great, so much so I even asked for their Spotify playlist as I had been singing along all evening, and the staff took time out to show me exactly how to get the right playlist. I can’t recommend it enough, this should be an Edinburgh must-try!
P. E.
Lovely lunch with friendly service. Good value for money.
Accessibility: the restaurant is on the first floor up a large flight of stairs.
J. K.
Six of us went, to take advantage of the Eat out to Help out. They were taking it seriously, asking customers to wear masks when moving around the restaurant, with hand gel available, and well spaced tables - all good to see and we felt comfortable being there. There weren't many people in, but the atmosphere was good. Which makes it all the more surprising that the service was so slow, with more than a 45 minute wait from us arriving to starters appearing. Without that they'd get 5 * as the food was great: subtle flavours, interesting choices and reasonable portions.
R. A.
Didn’t get to eat here, but the service was so kind and responsive! Made a reservation on a Saturday morning and kept having to shift right. They were responsive and polite! Thank you!!
A. M.
Brilliant addition to the already great collection of restaurants in Edinburgh. Beautiful food, well presented and a great wine selection. Friendly and helpful staff. Would highly recommend.
P. N.
Fantastic service, food and atmosphere. The scallops and venison were the best I have had.
D. P.
Beautiful decor, delicious food & fantastic staff. We visited with our young baby (6 weeks) & they were incredibly helpful and thoughtful with her, providing a space for her to lie down so I could actually eat with two hands, a real novelty these days. Attentive without being overbearing. Had good vegetarian options too.
A. S.
This place doesn't get the attention it deserves.
Great food and service, amazing lunch deal, really enjoyed it there.
F. S.
Really nice place for dinner, elegant and cozy room with a high ceiling, very friendly and attentive staff and excellent food. Would definitely come again!
L. M.
Fantastic food and great service. I had duck with sweetcorn fritter which was delicious. Cod with herb crust went down well with others as did the pan fried sea bass with Thai broth. Cranachan, pavlova, rich chocolate brownie and sticky toffee pudding were pure joy. Thoroughly recommend a visit to the Perch.
J. W.
Fantastic Sunday lunch. Main course and dessert were very tasty and the coffee just topped things off nicely. Service was friendly and efficient. A most enjoyable experience.
J. B.
Lovely food, prompt service. Small portion sizes however had to use the hotel vending machine afterwards.
B. F.
The food was AMAZING! Their wine selection was fantastic. We cannot wait to eat here again! (Also the staff was very friendly and helped us pick the perfect dinner :) )
E. R.
Good food, quite a long wait for it to arrive but we were in no hurry and it is a pleasant spot to enjoy a glass of wine.
d. l.
Perfect place for a nice evening. Apart from good quality food and drinks, the Service is extraordinarily good!
W. G.
Had dinner at the Perch with wife on Wednesday 16th June. Excellent food. We had the seared liver, smoked salmon parcel and steak and pork, all good, especially the steak. Really good service and prices very fair for the quality of the cooking. Real flowers on the table, music loud enough to hear but not too loud to be obtrusive, tables well spaced. Recommended!
B. H.
Perfect.
P. B.
We arrived to some confusion about our reservation but the staff resolved the issue promptly and with grace. The service and food were outstanding and comedy was provided by both sides in interpreting our American and Scottish accents (milk and sugar- Monkey Sholder).
A. D.
The ambiance and the staff were amazing. Food beautifully cooked and presented. Able to cater for different dietary needs
Z. T.
Fantastic food and service. Couldn’t recommend more - thank you!
L. J. v.
Food was average but not bowled over. The pork belly didn't seem to be rendered well and was a bit bland. The panacotta was nice but the sauce had a sharp off putting taste and the meringue tasted weirdly like onions, quite an odd flavour profile for panacotta.
D. O.
The meal I Had at the perch was amazing. Went there for the 4th anniversary with my partner and the food was amazing. Had for 3 starters because I couldn't resist arancini. The ox liver starter was unbelievable the sauce it was in juet blew me away slightly sweet taste too it which gave an unbelievable balance to the dish. For the main I asked the waiter whether I should go for the venison or the steak and he recommended the venison and it did not disappoint the venison was cooked to perfection the fondant potatoes where delicious and the whiskey sauce brought the dish together. The brownie for dessert was so crisp on the top and the center was so fudgy and one of the best brownies I've ever had. Can't recommend enough.
R. S.
Tiny place. Food is great. But the staffs are not very welcoming. Felt a bit neglected the whole time.
A. W.
Great atmosphere, good food!!
J. B.
I had a wonderful time there, the fish I had wasnamazing and the staff were all very nice to me.
I'll be sure to come back some other time!
K. A.
Enjoyed a fantastic meal for a birthday celebration as a party of 12. The service was excellent, really attentive to everyone, and food was lovely. Would definitely recommend.
b. j.
Great meal very tasty. The beer selection is not that good only lager and cider no bitters.Hence I never had a drink.Otherwise very good Worth a visit.
M. H.
Place itself is nice my honest opinion on the food was OK but nothing memorable The soup was over seasoned the bread that came with it was burnt had requested for my burger to be cooked well was served pink in the middle and dessert was a little dissapointing ordered white chocolate pavlova but meringue was not homemade and more like a shop bought meringue nest
R. M.
Please go....it is friendly- comfortable and the food is super. Great value for money- for a high quality menu.
Y. P.
Lovely ambience and friendly service. Main, the duck, was excellent and starter, mozzarella and pesto salad, very good. My desert was fine but didn't quite live up to the superb earlier portion of the meal. Would definitely come again though!
M. F.
Very nice setting overlooking Hanover St (try and get a table by the window). Starter (mediterranean dips & bread) and dessert (sticky toffee pudding) were incredible. Mains could be improved - sea bass dish was a bit bland and the burger was very plain (could look to one of the burger chains for inspiration). Good portion sizes though.
P. E.
Great food. Excellent atmosphere. Superb for couples. Could not fault the service the food and great value for money. Will definitely go back.
O. W.
Delicious meals all round; very relaxed atmosphere; lovely decor and great service. Highly recommend. Would come again as and when next in Edinburgh.
S.
Lovely, small and very friendly restaurant with a great Scottish chef who clearly knows his onions! Visited last night with my wife on a trip to Edinburgh and picked it due to the good reviews and location. Was not disappointed
In any way.
H. N.
Very warm welcome. Great ambiance. Friendly, helpful staff. Best fish and chips we have had. Will definitely recommend it and will come back again. Thank you for a great evening.
H. A.
I would highly recommend the perch to anyone. I went for lunch and there is a lunch deal that is either 2 courses for £12 or 3 for £14.50 which is a great price for the quality of food. For the started I decided to have the ox liver with a creamy mushroom sauce on a slice of brioche. I am not a fan of mushrooms but it was superb. For my main I had the battered haddock with hand cut chips and peas. This was also very tasty. To end it off I had the desert of the day which was a lemon and lime cheesecake that was amazing but the other deserts on offer also sounded great too. The staff were very friendly and helpful too, so if you are looking for a nice place to have lunch then definitely give The Perch a go
t. l.
Food was glorious. Started with chargrilled asparagus with parma ham poached egg and holondaise. I had venison which came with wilted kale baby beetroot and mash. The good lady had seabass with samphire, crushed potatoes and beans in a Thai broth. I finished off with sticky toffee pudding, which. Was delicious but needing sharing as it was large.
A. R.
Amazing food experience. The starters - salmon with seafood and mustard sauce tasted like heaven. Every ingredient complemented the rest of the dish. For the main I had the special - stir fried Scottish beef. It was delicious. Finally the Pavlova was wonderfully refreshing. It was a fine dining experience very reasonably priced. Anytime I'm going to be back in Edinburgh I'll make sure to visit again. Adding to that the service was very quick, staff friendly and helpful. Five stars doesn't seem enough.
C. M.
This was a really nice restaurant that had only opened fairly recently. The food was excellent, staff were really friendly and the cocktails were good too. I'll definitely be back when I'm next in Edinburgh. I had the haggis for my main and chocolate tart for pudding. Both were excellent.
P. B.
Recently opened and no website yet (that I could find). Lovely food and friendly staff. Reasonably priced and nice menu. Range of prices to suit budgets.
Stack of lamb lovely, beautifully cooked and presented but wish I'd ordered a side of salad or veg to go with it.
Extra marks for a wee piece of delicious tablet with the coffee
S. L. D.
The fish dish I ordered was outstanding. Very relaxed atmosphere. Will definitely be back

The Perch is a great place for almost any occasion. the food is delicious and made from quality, local produce. The atmosphere is cosy but stylish and the staff are very attentive. In an area of Edinburgh where it is hard to find a 'classic' restaurant among fast food and cuisines from other countries, The Perch offers the perfect places to experience great food and drink.
j. h.
The perch couldn't have been more accommodating. The food was incredible with each dish serving a combination of bold flavours that complimented each other perfectly.
The two members of staff that were working were extremely attentive giving us local information and even looking after our baby so I could eat hot food!!! If you have a baby you know how rare this is.
Thank you for our evening, meal and looking after our baby so well
F. B.
Nice staff, very good food, good gluten free choice, good Drinks. Worth the money
S. H.
Nice location and a great-looking dining room and bar. Food fine but didn't push any boundaries.

Early Saturday evening. They managed to accommodate 5 of us and were absolutely charming. Exceptional food and great service - I feel like we were fortunate to get ahead of the wave as I expect the Perch will be booked solid when word gets around.

Food was delicious served by exceptional table staff, cocktails were quite strong but well worth the money ;) the place looks nothing special from outside but candlelight, nice table setting and a lovely relaxed atmosphere convinced you of something special.

(Translated) Located in the New Town area of Edinburgh within easy reach. Few tables but really very cozy place, with wooden structures and elevated view of the street. Good dishes, the haggis tasted very tasty. Not to be confused with the local "Dogs", now closed but originally positioned there. Average prices and friendly staff.

(Translated) Very nice surprise that this small restaurant with fresh and authentic products (fabulous herring fish & chips, sea bass with fresh peas and grilled local potatoes: yum! The traditional Haggis is divine ...) in a nice setting with staff charming and attentive. By the way, excellent IPA to be savored on a background of Aretha Franklin and Amy Winehouse. Note a long staircase not easy to climb for grannies or strollers.
