Reviews of Three Birds

Very good Christmas menu (£35 each for 3 courses) with tasty duck and starters. Great quality food and lovely service. A little on the pricey side though for what you get.
J. D.
Fun place with a great menu, some quirky choices. We loved the food but it felt a little crammed space wise.
D. C.
Love 3 birds.
It's certainly on the expensive side of things compared to the portions, but it's worth the visit; the good is simply delicious and also creative. It's great for special occasions.
Staff are awesome, welcoming and friendly.
Simply fab.
It's a shame they stopped the half-price dinner tasters, they were a great way to have an affordable dinner -while helping out a bit.
n.
A great cosy restaurant with some unique seasonal flavours. The menu is up to date with delicious selections and treats. The brunch menu is great too with classics such as eggs Benedict. A two course menu costs £15 which is very reasonable. The staff are friendly and professional. I'm giving 4 stars because it is a small place and with Covid, I thought it was too small and the tables were too near each other.
L. D.
What a find!
You will not be disappointed.
Amazing food, beautiful wine and splendid service.
Ambience is delightful.
Don't miss out on this treasure!
Wish we could return but we are only holidaymakers in Edinburgh .
N. D.
Amazing food, amazing service. The scallops were the best I’ve had. You get the loveliest welcome, nothing is too much trouble and it’s not expensive for the quality of food. Can’t wait to go again.
Ζ. Ρ.
Quiet place with soft music very good service with a smile and courtesy and the food AMAZING !!!
C. H.
The staff were lovely, but the food disappointed a little. I ordered a Malaysian curry, but got some sort of ratatouille with a tortilla wrap and an Indian raita. Rather odd. Reasonably priced though. My friend had sea bass and saffron rice, which looked nice.
L. A.
Outstanding food - interesting, diverse and beautifully cooked & prepared menu. Staff were lovely. Atmosphere perfect. LOVED this place and will definitely be back.
C. C.
An exquisite restaurant. Every course was deliciously constructed and delightfully presented. And we were very attentively waited on by Ronnie and Hanna. We will definitely come back, if we might be so lucky.

Meals were sensible portions. Staff very polite and helpful. Pleasant atmosphere. All in all a place that I would recommend to anyone for a pleasant experience.

This place is great for an intimate dinner with family, friends or even a great place to go for a date! There are fairy lights on the walls and it is has a very cosy feel. The staff are very attentive, friendly and welcoming. The food was great, with a plethora of gluten free (most of the food on the menu is gluten free), vegetarian and vegan choices. Starters are pretty small but in my opinion, the food was delicious. However, not everyone in the party enjoyed the food, in particular the Hake dish was not well received. Overall it was a good restaurant, and I would recommend it.
E. R.
Good brunch options, good coffee and plenty of space.
T. O.
Oxtail and venison were excellent, chicken was fine. Dessert was good. Drinks were good. Reasonable service, reasonable price.

Booked this on a whim and so glad we did, from arriving on Friday night the staff were so welcoming, the music was great and the food was to die for!!, will definitely be back on our next visit to the city...
L. N.
A small restaurant with nice food. The tables be placed very close to each other. Price is reasonable compare with quality. Staff are nice and friendly too.
K. M.
This is THE restaurant to go to if you live on the south side of the city. Actually, I take that back, if you live in ANY part of the city, you should seriously try the Three Birds. I’d visited this restaurant during the Edinburgh Festival and experienced a vegetarian aubergine (eggplant) dish that was amazing. Fast forward to last weekend and a Saturday spent walking around the city taking photos. I walked all the way back home but happened to pass by Viewforth. I was curious if their menu had changed.
They had a new seasonal menu and their set lunch was only £12.50 for 2 courses. I couldn’t resist, and you won’t either.
R. W. M.
An exceptional restaurant with unusual staff and great food. The lighting is superb and may be the secret of why this place is so good. The decor is great too and there are lots of interesting things on the wall (see my photos).
The food must be the main reason for the success of this restaurant, and its little chain of similar establishments around the city. I only had one dish -- the fish of the day (sea bass) -- and it was really superb. Light, aromatic, subtle and delicous.
The waitresses chatted to us like we were old friends and this is unusual. Why don't more places do this? In most restaurants I feel they don't want to talk to me or, even worse, they put on a show of friendliness that is fake. Often I get the feeling they don't want to be there, they are above this sort of thing and they also don't want to be wasting their time talking to me.
I think one of the reasons for the surly undercurrent I feel in most restaurants is that waiting tables is considered a temporary or lowly job. Presumably they think that serving people is not a noble endeavour. But it is. In other countries the waiting staff take their job seriously, and take pride in serving others, and this comes across.
I've heard that most waiting staff in UK are hired on a temporary basis, paid peanuts and expected to move on soon. At Three Birds I suspect they pay properly and expect their staff to remain.
We were approached by a middle aged lady who is presumably the manager. She was as hardworking as the others but she spoke to us with a confidence that suggersted she had no fears about getting the heave.
We chatted and she told us she'd been there since the restaurant opened. She even came up with the name of the owner's new restaurant, on Broughton Street in Edinburgh, which is called the Educated Flea.
"The name came from a joke," she told us. The third restaurant in their group is called the Apiary.
This was her joke cum poem:
"Birds do it
Bees do it
Even an educated flea can do it"
I can just imagine the laughter this comment must have provoked.
I wonder how many people have had restaurants names after their jokes?

Delicious food, super nice atmosphere and excellent service.
There’s a wide variety of food going from easygoing good to nice main dishes.
L. H.
Chicken with a hint of Korean was very very good. Service excellent and all at a very reasonable price.....
A. M.
Excellent choice of quite different dishes. Good service, well arranged seating, bright interior, for the quality, very modest prices.
T. R.
Food was delicious, nicely presented and reasonably. The staff were friendly and accommodating to dietary requests.
Will definitely visit again
J. P. J.
Very friendly service. Interesting menu, lovely presentation. A cozy unpretentious spot
P. H.
Good range of choices. Good food. Good wine and very good staff
L. A.
Excellent tiny restaurant with inventive dishes, great service and very reasonably priced. Generous eggs Benedict with 3 eggs!
G. D.
Good local restaurant with a good value selection and a much bigger menu than ought to be possible for a place of such few covers - credit to the chefs. It’s so small and friendly you’ll know the staff by the time you leave. Needs booking in advance, but it’s worth it.
M. G.
Food fabulous and staff wonderful at this cosy restaurant. Wonderful ambience. Peanut butter jam ice cream is divine . Something for everyone on this eclectic and delicious menu.
K. M.
Really enjoyable and relaxed lunch with great food. Eggs Benedict was very good indeed and ice cream a perfect dessert. The atmosphere was very good and our server friendly and able to flex the menu. I'll definitely be back!
K. R.
The food was fantastic. We had the veggie mezze starter and the Big Cow main. Simply delicious. Great service. All in all, a special night out.
K. T.
Went here for a family reunion type thing, very crowded, but the atmosphere was fantastic with the food being amazing as well
B. U.
Good food, nice people and cosy atmosphere.
C. K.
The food was exquisite & delicious, the staff was very friendly, they had a blast from the past playlist going, and ambiance was spot on. Highly recommended!
N. G.
Excellent for allergies, the team couldn’t have been more helpful and accommodating.
J. D.
I love this place. Food, staff and atmosphere are all perfect. Last time I was in for dinner, I had one of the best seafood platters ever - seriously!
A. L.
A cracking little restaurant. Very friendly staff, who trust you to examine their varied gin selection without drinking it....
Excellent, original and exciting menu, combining ingredients and flavours not found in similar menus elsewhere.
Very well cooked food, with some unique specials.
Most tables busy on a Monday evening - that says something!
On our 'to visit' list, every time we are in Edinburgh.
Last time we were in Edinburgh they were full, so booked well ahead for this trip. Well worth it. The food and service are as good as ever. Great varied original menu. Still on our ‘to visit’ list.
T. C.
We booked here at the last minute but weren't disappointed. Very friendly and helpful staff & great meals.
s. t.
Great food, staff, atmosphere. Lovely to be out again. Great service and can't wait to go back
A. K.
Absolutely delicious and a beautiful atmosphere for an intimate dinner. Highly recommend going for a meal at this charming establishment in Bruntsfield.
M. K.
We had a very lovely dinner here on our last night in Edinburgh. The service was great and so friendly. We loved the veggie options and the unique ice cream flavors were fabulous! In a great neighborhood and very reasonably priced, especially given the level of quality.
B. S.
Fair price, friendly staff and great food. Lunch menu was very good!
D. M.
Amazing wee restaurant with loads of alternative tasty cuisine on offer.
I loved this place as the dishes were slightly different than you’d usually see in your run-of-the-mill classy Scottish restaurant. Loads of delicious choices on offer as well as sharing mains, we had the meat one and it was quality.
The service was fantastic and they were rushed off their feet but still found the time to attentively see to us. It was really busy and quite small which I feel adds to the dinning experience as it makes it a great atmosphere and really relaxed and welcoming.
It’s also very reasonably priced for such high quality original cuisine.
C. J. T.
Excellent staff. Relaxed yet politely urgent. Lovely food and ace wine. I'll be back...
P. K.
Tucked away along a side road and with a simple doorway and window we thought this was a great find. The staff were excellent and really helpful. The chef was able to easily cater for gluten free and vegetarian needs. The quality of food was excellent and not over priced. The venue is small and fairly tight for space but is well worth it. Don't expect to turn up and get a seat as it's always busy, phone and book. Car parking is an issue as it's side streets but it's worth the few minutes to find a space.
K. A.
Best eggs benny I town
I. B.
First time dining here. Menu varied which suited the different range of dietary requirements. The dishes we ordered were very tasty and couldn't be faulted. Reasonably priced. I would definitely go back and wouldn't hesitate recommending it.
F.
Nice food but was over priced.
J. W.
Very nice small restaurant. Outstanding and imaginative cooking. Lovely atmosphere, friendly and unobtrusive service. No piped music. Reasonable prices. Portions ample and no need for doggie-bags. Even after the recent excesses of Christmas and the New Year, the idea of an evening with friends here tempted me out and we all enjoyed it enormously.
R. H.
Excellent independent small restaurant. High quality and imaginative food . Staff helpful and knowledgeable. Chef willing to accommodate dietary requirements. Wonderful. Just make sure you book as it gets busy.
Z. S.
Love this place. The food is always amazing. They have very unique dishes and at times you look at the menu and wonder how they thought things up and whether it will really work - always tastes great! The staff are always lovely, helpful and friendly and they are always very good at catering for specialised diets and will answer any questions regarding the food without issue
M. G.
The place is nice and the food is pretty good but the prices are a bit high
G. C.
Discovered and visited first on third week of opening for lunch (? years ago).. Visited many many times for family gatherings, taking friends or a cosy meal out. Varying menu. Owners and staff delightful. How to describe? Small friendly restaurant with good range of Mediterranean style dishes. We visit every time we are in Edinburgh.
N. M.
Quick service. Tasty food with an earthy flair. Some dishes can a bit experimental and need adjusting but I like going to this restaurant because you never know what's on which is exciting. I love the shabby air with accent on the food and the wine list is very reasonable.
D. W.
Great for gluten free (almost everything is) and staff very attentive over my low fodmap diet. Reasonably priced and tasty food. Would definitely go again. Thanks for a good lunch!
P. T. R.
Great food, great service and really good wine... My only issue is that I can't eat everything in one go! I'll definitely be going back. The duck breast was incredible but the "Big Cow" is calling my name...
K. C.
Consistently busy, it'd be easy to suppose Three Birds offered a dining experience par excellence, but instead it's reliably fine. The food is never exceptional, but never terrible - usually of the "I could make this at home" variety. Pricing is a little high, given this fact, though the staff are utterly delightful and the cosy nature of the place makes it an enjoyable venue to linger at.
D. R.
A very special experience. The menu was varied and original. The dishes were beautifully prepared and mouth-watering. Reasonably priced.
E. B.
What a gorgeous wee place! Locally sourced food with fantastic creativity with the dishes. Absolutely lovely, friendly thoughtful and efficient. The hand soap is from a wee local business and smells delicious.
The only downside is that if you are stuck next to a family of misbehaving children there's no way to avoid them!
V. F.
Such a cosy sweet little place. Food is interesting, perhaps unusual but very tasty. The atmosphere is lovely... Starting from the name. Just a little bit on the pricey side (but I'm a student). Perfect for couples or close friends.
S. R.
Amazing food, imaginative combination of flavours
D. S.
Nice small artisan restaurant. Reasonable prices for both food and drink. We were a group of 4, arrived at 12.00 and left after 15.00 without feeling pushed to leave. Friendly service. Recommended.
W. A.
Great food with a great atmosphere. The staff there were very helpful and put up with us staying quite late. The food was delicious and the dishes cater well for a range of different dietary needs.
G. K.
Good service and great food.
The crispy pigs ear and Pistachio dip were my favourite sides/starters.
If you're feeling hungry (and like your meat), go for the 3Birds & Beasts platter to share between two. It's massive but doesn't cut any corners on quality.
E. B.
Nice food, but quite disrespectful and surprising for a restaurant that while customers are eating they clean the room (it was 8:15pm). To eat while seeing the garbage pass under your eyes, eat your desert while brooming or storing dishes was really unpleasant.
C. M.
A cozy and adorable little restaurant that's great for brunch or a fancy evening meal. The staff are very friendly, the menu is unique and the prices are very affordable (£9.50 for two courses - including specials). There were a wide range of specials available when we visited including lots of vegetarian options which was a plus for this area of town. Even though it's a little hidden away from the busy streets, this place can get super busy, so make sure to make a reservation.
I. M.
Have eaten here a couple of times, as well as at their sister restaurants Educated Flea & The Apiary. I would recommend all three for top notch, creative cooking and excellent, friendly service. Prices are good and as there's three restaurants in the group, no reason to not keep going back again and again!
D. M.
We were staying around the corner from Three Birds and decided to give it a try on our last night in Edinburgh. I'm so glad we did because our meal was top-notch! This is the neighborhood restaurant of my dreams, and if I was lucky enough to live nearby, I would frequent it often. The service was attentive, warm, and friendly. The food was delicious - tasted like a wonderful home-cooked meal with elevated presentation. Everything about Three Birds was wonderful. I'm definitely coming back next time I find myself in Edinburgh.
b. p.
Wonderful food in a relaxed setting. Creative but well matched combinations of flavours like the pear with venison carpaccio. Loved the trout main too with chilli and roasted vegetables. Was skeptical about the garlic ice cream with apple & rosemary compote but it really worked. Short but well choosen wine list at fair prices - went with a good US Riesling & a very nice Tokay with dessert.
S. C.
Echoing the other positive reviews, a great location for a nice meal out. Best suited to a couple or small group as the place isn't huge but feels nice and cosy. A good selection of dishes and everything was delicious. Looknig forward to returning!
G. W.
Excellent food and gluten free. Lovely staff. Will definitely return
A.
Simply tastey unpretentious food, prices are a bit lower than other places in the areas which is appreciated
H. C.
The food is always innovative and delicious! The staff seem to enjoy their work which creates a warm atmosphere. One of my favourites!
S. A.
Good food, nice people.
M. H.
I think I've eaten just about everything on Three Birds seasonal menus and all of it was delicious. These guys churn out great plates of food that keep me coming back again and again. The two courses for £9.50 lunch special can't be beat for taste and quality of ingredients. Or come for dinner and devour the birds and beasts sharing platter. Stay for dessert and you're sure to find a speciality ice-cream on the menu. Seating is limited so book early to avoid disappointment.
C.
Great service. I had the pork belly and Mississippi mess. Wonderful flavour however the quaver felt out of place. Portions very small.
J. K.
Absolutely delicious food, friendly staff and cosy atmosphere. Highly recommended.
E. R.
Just lovely, great food, great people, great environment
C. A.
Really nice food and brilliant staff! Love it every time we visit. The wine is very reasonably priced also 👍
H. J. D.
The best food, locally sourced and amazing prices. Great, knowledgable and accommodating staff too! Love it.
A. E.
Just off Bruntsfield Place, Three Birds is a lovely little neighbourhood bistro. I visited for lunch with a friend during their Menu Taster Days, and was not disappointed. The service was friendly and welcoming, there was a great atmosphere in the restaurant for a Wednesday lunch time and the food was excellent. Looking forward to returning to try out one of their sharing platters.
C. K.
We absolutely love Three Birds!! The food and drinks are great and the service is top notch. It's my favourite restaurant in Bruntsfield. Its got a friendly and cosy vibe. 100% recommend this joint.
T. M.
Super friendly and understanding staff. The chef went out of his way to cook us a delicious dinner around some odd food allergies. I highly recommend.
A. H.
There's really nothing not to like about Three Birds. The staff are lovely, and the food is incredibly tasty. The atmosphere is cosy and the music was calm and not too loud. Would absolutely recommend.
G. C.
Imaginative and well executed menu with good vegan options but plenty for the carnivore too. Superb service. Highly recommended.
S. S. (.
The 3 birds and beasts platter is gorgeous!
K. C. P.
Love the avocado toast! ;)

H. D.
Scallop starters and Venison mains were delicious. Warm friendly service.
M. R.
A great welcome on arrival. Had three excellent courses here accompanied by very attentive and friendly service. I'd recommend the ice cream slider dessert.
B. M.
Friendly straff, cozy feel and truly amazing food. Been there a lot and never been disappointed in the slightest. But make a brunch reservation, it gets full quickly.
E. F.
Independent, individual, intimate restaurant. Delicious dinner last week - kindly accommodating us at 6pm for pre-theatre food. Lovely waitress called Gowan.
b. 3.
A cozy restaurant with great food! The waitresses were attentive and the food impressed me through the whole evening. I highly recommend the sharing platter for two. Enjoy!
T. J.
Very friendly atmosphere in this lovely restaurant. Very simple decor. Nothing simple about the food though. I started with duck ham, with a mouth-wateringly lovely vanilla bean and apple ketchup. So good. I then had the spicy llama - yes, that's right, llama. Not sure there are any other restaurants in Edinburgh you can get llama! Just the right amount of spice and flavour in the llama dish, which was accompanied by lentil dhal. I topped my meal off with a portion of the peach and pistachio cake, with raspberry and lemon frozen yoghurt. The cake was perhaps a smidgen dry in places, but the frozen yoghurt went really well with it and helped to combat any dry bits. Overall, a very enjoyable and tasty dinner experience. Would definitely recommend.
A. S.
Delicious lunch. Most of the menu is gluten free, but don't let that put you off. Locally sourced food at reasonable prices.
P. B.
Five stars for the atmosphere alone! The food is very very good, and very good value for your money. Nice staff, nice location. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
J. K.
Tasty, original food at reasonable prices (especially at lunchtime). Relaxed atmosphere and good service. Constantly changing menu, and really friendly staff.
D. M.
Very nice breakfast with a varied and interesting menu. Relatively expensive for a breakfast, however the quality of the food left us feeling happy!
J. M.
Fantastic and original food. Absolutely worth a visit and you can guarantee you will be leaving satisfied!
P. C.
Loved this place. The staff were lovely and the food was delicious!!
Z. -.
The staff was very friendly. Food was Ok, we had the terrine as a starter and it was nothing extraordinary. The day fish was not particularly fresh although ok overall.
K. H.
Lovely little neighbourhood restaurant specializing in the more unusual side of things. Kangaroo anyone? Great for veggies and meat-a-holics a like. Try their sharing platters. My favourite is the big cow. Mooo!
J. H.
What a gorgeous find! Excellent service and delicious food. The vegetarian/vegan options were really impressive. Would highly recommend.
K. A.
Brilliant hidden gem in Bruntsfield. Menu changes every few weeks so it's great as a regular visitor. Staff are clued up on the daily specials and helped me make a great choice last time I was in. Small and cosy place so booking ahead is essential.
A. G.
One of my favourite restaurants! The food is gorgeous and the Staff are so welcoming. The prices are also great!

Love the 3 birds and have for ages. Great staff, great food (though sometimes I'm not totally convinced by their experiments), and lovely drinks.
A. D.
Absolutely amazing, service was a bit slow as we anxiously waited for them to take our dessert order but everything was so amazing we didn't mind.
J. R.

(Translated) I'm here, we tried appetizers of a unique balance, contrasting flavors that give harmony to the palate. So is the second, an excellent meat served with sauces, one with pepper and the other with cheese, delicious to say the least. It is not a tourist spot, it is not in the usual tours, but it is worth a visit. Friendliness and professionalism are the perfect setting for a beautiful masterpiece. I haven't paid yet, but I don't care because it's worth it
