Reviews of Valvona & Crolla
S. D.
What a great experience! Couldn't have been nicer food; the staff were fantastic and the atmosphere in the restaurant was So so relaxing. Would definitely recommend and we will definitely be coming back in the future.
R. S.
Tucked amongst a row of shops is this must-visit deli, wine-merchants and restaurant.
There are a range of premium italian meats, cake, cheeses, as well as fresh pasta and much more when you first enter the store. Continue further back, and the establishment opens to an incredible range of wines, all sorted by region at reasonable prices through to a few hundred pounds for a vintage bottle of wine. If you're unsure, the staff are attentive and helpful.
Then, just as you don't think there can be anything else, you'll find the well staffed bistro/cafe at the rear. Offering a well planned menu including paired wines, again at a good price for incredible gourmet food.
This truly is a hidden gem in this city, do not miss out.
M. B.
An amazing range of produce - fresh, cured and more. Helpful staff. We had breakfast here and it was lovely. Freshly made pastries, continental and full breakfast. The coffee was some of the best I've had.
L. E.
Amazing experience from start to finish.
We originally went there to get a Crema Pasticcera Croissant but they had sold out. Joseph said they have fresh ones every day and offers to put two aside for us.
We returned the next day and had breakfast which was fantastic. We already had lunch plans but after talking to Joseph we decided to cancel and book in for lunch.
Lunch was fantastic as was Giovanni who looked after us.
If you're looking for authentic Italian cuisine then this is the place for you!
T. U.
A treasure trove of a deli. An absolute must to visit if you love food and wine. There's a cafe hidden at the back
J. C.
Amazing shop with plenty of choice of Italian products. You can find anything ranging from wines and liquors to sweets, fresh pasta, balsamic vinegar and much more. I would say it’s slightly expensive but I would definitely pay the money to get some of my favourite Italian products here in the UK in a physical shop rather than having to order online.
They also have a restaurant inside which unfortunately I didn’t get to try, but will definitely do if I’ll go back to Edinburgh!
A. B.
My mum brought me here from when I was born when we lived across the road back in the 80s and it still stands the test of time all these years later. An Edinburgh institution full of the best and most delicious foods for every budget.
J. S.
Amazing Italian deli in the front, Osteria in the back. We had Antipasti & pasta, it was excellent. Quick service, friendly and efficient. Rightfully an institution.
I. W.
Excellent produce and customer service. We also used their service for Christmas deliveries to friends and family and the parcels arrived quickly and were very well packed and presented. Strong recommendation. (The take-away coffee was wonderful, too.)
R. M.
Great deli with superb cafe offering authentic Italian meals with great produce.
O. T.
The best Italian food I have tried outside Italy. Staff are very nice and friendly. The shop has a great selection. Amazing and will be coming back
C. M.
Great food and friendly staff. Meatballs amazeballs.
K. F.
Stumbled across this place, drawn in by the bread in the window! The shop keeps going back, and feels like you’re in Italy!! Gift shop is super cute and the restaurant managed to squeeze us in for breakfast which was lush!! Highly recommend a visit!
L. R.
Thank you to the guy working here. What an experience we had trying hams and cheese for our homemade charcuterie board. Extremely helpful, friendly and full of knowledge!! Highly recommend 😍 from the guy visiting from Melbourne and his girlfriend
F. M.
Wow what a shop. Also lovely Caffè. Had hot chocolate and a croissant for breakfast yum.
G. B.
Authentic selection of Italian cooking for lunch in the cafe restaurant. Great shop with a great range of products to satisfy all your Italian food needs.
J. L.
Brilliant shop, if you like Italian food you'll love this shop. Prices reasonable for the quality extensive range and a very friendly and knowledgeable staff make a visit a pleasure.
A. C.
As soon as you entered this cozy shop run by Italians, my wife and I immediately breathed the air of home! Local products and delicatessen on the ground floor and restaurant / bar on the first floor. Excellent food, polite and friendly staff. Highly recommended!!!
C. E.
What a range! Coffee, chocolate, cheese. All the best things to splash out on! Excellent for gifts or special occasions/treats. Also gave us some great advice for buying a gift even though they were quite busy!
N. C.
I've loved going to Valvona and Crolla for years. As a child the towering shelves full of unfamiliar goods fascinated me and not much has changed. Every time I go in it takes me a while to have a proper look around. I also love to eat here as the food is usually simple but very tasty. Would highly recommend a visit if you're in Edinburgh.
B. C.
The real italian experience with the best food I've ever tasted. Lovely place with worm welcoming and nice stuff.
Go there and be an italian for 1 day, enjoy the food and the place... Don't rush!
L. T.
Fresh ingredients from italy and cheese selections and many more. Their cafe was amazing. I would recommend for italian food lovers.
M. T.
This is a heavenly deli. The cafe at the back is wonderful. The stock in the deli is extensive and exhaustive. Loved it going back tomorrow!!
G. L.
Ancient deli, mostly unchanged drive the 80s, very good quality food and drink and a nice cafe tucked in the back of the shop
E. C.
Shop as incredible after a long time visit. Staff welcoming, helpful and bought items.
Cafe a bit flat, lacks atmosphere and initially staff no welcome. Booked, no tables set.
It did improve however, breakfast menu lacked imagination. Coffee great.
J. M.
I recently placed an order for some wine via Valvona & Crolla's website which was processed promptly & dispatched to me via dpd courier service. This is where things start to go wrong with dpd being unable to locate our property. I immediately contacted V&A & got a very helpful lady, Francesca, who contacted dpd local depot & passed on my telephone number, so that I could talk to dpd's driver & offer directions if necessary. Unfortunately dpd, in their wisdom, didn't try to redeliver the parcel, but sent it back to Edinburgh from Sussex! I rang Francesca explained the situation, she was extremely apologetic & dispatched another parcel for overnight delivery which duly arrived. This showed exceptional Customer service for which I would like to thank her. It was not a problem caused by V&A, but the professional manner in which this issue was resolved was first class.
J. H.
Great place with a cosy resto hidden behind an amazingly presented deli
If you want a pizza they will just make what you want 😋
V. V.
Looooved this place! Feel like I just had some kind of Harry Potter experience. Got lured into the shop whilst walking past due to it's unusual look. After loads of 'wows' looking at the produce, ended up in the restaurant at the back of the shop where I just had the best pasta!
A. A.
A fantastic shop and an amazing restaurant.
K. M.
Love the store and restaurant. The restaurant is a must, food is always delicious and the staff are friendly and helpful. We buy the fairer trade filter coffee, very good every day blend. There is always something tasty in the deli to tempt no matter what you are in the mood for. First time I have been able to visit in over a year, thank god for vaccination and easing of restrictions
H. B.
Delicious food, friendly staff and pleasant atmosphere. The shop is great!
F. S.
Valvona & Crolla is not only an great deli, but a beautiful shop. The staff are so lovely and really helpful. The inside of the shop is like being transported into a different place. The outside of the shop is awfully deceptive. I felt everything in there was appropriately priced, but expect to pay a little bit more than your average super market price. I would recommend this place for anyone looking to get authentic Italian food, spices or wine.
A. P.
I love the shop but dropped in to the Cafe. We had a coffee and a hot chocolate and they were both tepid. Very disappointed
A. Q.
Fantastic delicatessen with very friendly and knowledgeable staff, superb range of food and a great place to find wonderful fresh Italian produce.
A. B.
Really amazing products and food. I think they could do more with the eat-in area. The deco felt more like a cheap cafe- the food and nice wine felt out of place!
L. B.
Went in to spend a voucher that had been gifted to us. And came away with a bottle of Tuscany Red wine. Wrapped and presented back as a gift to me. Top notch!
R. H.
Best Italian in Edinburgh. Hands down. Gorgeous 3 course lunch, friendly staff, lovely shop and a true taste of Italy!
J. O.
A place where you can find the finest Italian products in Edinburgh, the food was really amazing!
C. T.
Fantastic choice of products. Cheese, ham, paté, oils and wines. The fresh fruit and veg are worth checking out and if you need dried pasta they have lots to choose from.
V. D.
A must place to shop, there cafe has some excellent food, first class coffee and wine.
A. R.
First meal out since Feb 2020 and it was SO lovely to be welcomed into V and C once more. Everything was perfectly arranged and the food was delicious as always.
P. R.
Great selection of Italian deli items. The chocolate tart we bought at the till however was old and dry.
J. W.
A true hidden treasure. On a recent visit to Edinburgh I persisted in finding this place as I had read good reviews on it. It has an unassuming exterior and is in a slightly run fown part of town but this adds to its characture as it is the oldest Italian deli in Edinburgh. Once inside it is like an Aladins cave for foodies with hung hams and huge Pecorino cheeses. The deli countrr is a riot of colour with very pleasant staff. The atmosphere is amazing. At the back and up a few steps is the cafe/restaurant which is wonderful and has well priced food/drinks. A lovely experience and find.
A. F.
Came here on a Saturday morning for some brunch. Nice staff, very nice food. What more could you want? Will be back next time I'm in Edinburgh.
T. R.
Good quality products but the prices are through the roof. Guanciale at 45 £ a kilo is theft
A. E.
Great coffee and meal.... Will definitely visit again
J.
Amazing products and service, thank you! I've visited a few times recently for myself and for gifts for others. The range of food and drinks available is brilliant and so is there the service and recommendations. Such a great shopping experience, and locally owned which makes it even better.. I'd recommend here for buying gifts for people who like their food and drink
A. D.
Superb delicatessen and cafe/restaurant. A gastronomic delight.
E. K.
When I first walked in this place I fell in love with the decor. It makes you travel back in time! Also the staff is always eager to help, always with a smile. The food tastes great,of course, and it reminds me of home ^^.
R. L.
An Edinburgh classic. Some great coffee, lovely baked goods and the bacon roll with sweet cherry tomatoes is a winner.
M. P.
An amazing deli with a great selection of foods and gifts.
M. R.
Giacomo was a very helpful employee. Very happy with the service!
P. B.
Difficult one this... Great staff, knowledgeable and kind. Lovely range of Italian foodstuffs, but wickedly overpriced if you know what you're buying. Great for a treat.
M. B.
Bringing a big shopping bag next time! Great selection...
K. H.
Great Italian grocer. Limited selection of fruits and vegetables but great pantry items like pasta, tomato sauce, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Lovely deli with cheese and meats. Excellent coffee which they make there and you can buy ground coffee to make at home.
T. V.
I travelled 10miles to get myself a selection of coffee beans for Christmas. To my disappointment I was only able to buy 2 kinds. The last time I went I was welcomed with a lovely greeting and offered to smell all the coffee. This time only 2 were available. The cafe shop coffee at the strongest setting is like tap water. The other offering on my lowest setting is like glue. What happened here? A shop for rich tourists now unfortunately
C. H.
Lovely place for lunch. Good distancing and great service. Light and airy. If you cannot walk up stairs I think they have a chair lift.
T. T.
Stunning shop. Very good restaurant. Excellent staff very reasonable prices.
T. T.
Always fresh tasting Italian produce and excellent take away coffee, of course accompanied by the best almond croissant I've ever tasted. My most favourite shopping indulgence by far.👌
J. C.
Quality is not cheap - this place is amazing. Very high quality service and produce. If I lived in Edinburgh, I'd be in this place every week (or more!)
P. V.
Be prepared with bags and a backpack, once you are in this place everything will drive you nuts. They have amazing food and ingredients and feels like, for a second, you are out of the city and into a beautiful pantry. Stop by, you won't regret it!
R. E.
Lovely food, coffee and service! The store itself is unbelievable, that amount of variety and good product and wines they carry! Will come back for sure! Keep it up!
K. M.
Did an online order for my daughter, who cannot travel home just now, as a little treat. Wonderful selection to browse through, simple ordering process, extremely efficient delivery service and my daughter assures me the food was all delicious and excellent quality. My contact with the store and afterwards with a query was promptly responded to by very pleasant, friendly staff - cannot recommend highly enough !!
m. k.
Lovely lunch, beautiful deli.
S. S.
We had a marvelous dinner show here as part of the 2019 fringe festival. Such a nice and special venue!
A. S.
Great variety of cold cuts, cheeses, olives, pasta, sweets, and many more. Excellent wine selection. Superb service! We shopped there several times during our three-day stay in Edinburgh :)
M. T.
Top quality food and a great choice of cheese. Also, forget sad supermarket gnocchi and pick some of the stuff they sell by weight. So far these are the only ones close to homemade in quality and density. Highly recommended.
K. F.
Absolutely the best original Italian style meal I've had in a long time. Best coffee too.
The shop range is amazing for cheese, wine, cured meats and coffee lovers.
Service is wonderful too.
F. N.
Wonderful place, excellent lunch.
N. K.
1st time I stepped through the door was the late 60's if you want quality some things over priced like fresh hot sausage but I've loved this place as a kid and still do
L.
No other shop smells as good as this. You don't have to spend a lot - the pizzas and quiches are really good value. Not expensive at all considering how good the food tastes. Lovely staff too. They've given me so many foodie tips.
C. S.
The space is so cool. It looks like a deli when you walk in, but walk to the end, turn the corner and there's a restaurant just beyond the wine room. Our server was very friendly and the food was great. I ordered the pizza with blue cheese and zucchini and really, really enjoyed it. I never order vegetarian dishes, but this was highly recommended. It did not disappoint. I loved the ambient light provided by the windows in the ceiling. I want to go back...craving that pizza right now.
D. D.
One of my favourite stores in Edinburgh! Great selection of premium products you will not find elsewhere in the town. Monthly wine tastings are great - Francesco is impressively knowledgeable!
C. C.
Lovely lunch for two with 2 glasses of wine for less than ,£50 !
A. H.
Like stepping into another country!
P. A.
Their Italian honey is amazing, especially the chestnut and honeydew. The queen is buying her food from here, but we have not bumped into her yet.
R. T.
Cafe (2 stars): The coffee was nothing special. Very few gluten-free options on the generally quite limited menu. Comfortable enough, but seems hugely overpriced. Deli shop (4 stars): expensive but fantastic, worth every penny! A good place to shop for treats.
A. B.
Another on my list of favourite shops. Having lived in Italy I missed certain products and this place has everything. Still need to try the wine night but you will love the selection and you can spend ages just taking in the smell and atmosphere
M. R.
Excellent deli with a great range of cheese, fresh and cooked meats, and Italian dry goods. There's also a selection of wine and a number of Italian themed items like cookbooks.
C. H.
A shrine to Italian cuisine and a heavenly place for foodies. Spent way too much on cured meats and bread and olives.... Everything really but wow the produce is second to none.
The atmosphere inside the store was that of a classic Italian deli I could imagine going in to as a kid. Sinatra on the stereo was a plus. Friendly service.
T. G.
A superb Italian deli with a fine cafe in the back, serving excellent coffee as well as breakfast and lunch. Top notch pasta, cheese, bread, wine and more for sale. Great service too!
P. J.
Fabulous as ever. A great place for breakfast and great deli shopping
A. P. F.
This place was a most popular Italian delicatessen, truly marvellous.
Has been modernised in step with the times, boasts a restaurant, a excellent wine choice albeit not that affordable to most people, and a reasonably good stock display found in most other deli's.
Overall a tad overpriced!
R. W.
My wife took me here as it is mentioned in the Alexander McCall Smith novels, and I love literary venues.
It is tucked away behind the deli and wine shop at the front, just keep walking once you are in.
Apart from its literary connection it is a great coffee shop with a nice history.
M. N.
A must visit in Edinburgh. Like being in an Italian grocery. Wonderful cafe. Great wines.
J. T.
Very nice deli of a standard I would expect of Valvona and Crolla. However interesting experience with our order of cheese scones..or should I say 'cheesed scones' Waitress said she would check their shop for cheese scones and returned with 'them' in bag. We asked for them to be warmed. They arrived warm on top and cold in centre. Melted cheese on top of a sweet bun.( Hidden in a bag) Tut tut Valvona and Crolla.
D. C.
Literally one of my favourite markets in the world. Of all the cities I've lived in or visited - in North America and Europe - this is my favourite market. It's quite niche, but it has only the best and most delicious products. I visit every time I'm in Edinburgh, but also order online for delivery to London. It's worth every penny
T.
Great food selection. Great for gifts and for some high class ingredients. A truly unique shop that you won't find in any part of Scotland other than Edinburgh.
S. M.
Dropped by here for the first time yesterday and enjoyed a wonderful lunch (gnocchi with pancetta!), staff are very friendly and service is top, incredible wine selection and a huge range of authentic Italian cuisine in the front of the shop! Will be back!
G. Y.
Lovely little place
R. D.
Scotland's oldest delicatessen and Edinburgh's least noisiest cafe.
C. G.
Unbeatable for Italian produce, even better for wine as their wines are not regionally specific as in Italy. It is a paradise for Italophiles and also for Italian ex-pats. Ciao!
L. O.
Was delighted to get gift vouchers for here for my birthday and had so much fun spending them :0)
I bought their own brand prosecco which is delicious and highly recommended. Also stocked up on pasta, olive oil and chocolate.
The shop is so nice to just have a wander around.
T. O.
Excellent Italian deli selling cheese, cured meats, fresh meat, pasta, fresh fruit and veg, oils, vinegars, condiments....everything! They sell the best, so prices are high but quality is excellent so you can't complain. Mozarella was £8.99 which I was a bit taken back by but the guy behind the counter gave me a discount because it was my first time and I was buying some other bits too (parmigiano , tomatoes, aubergine, cannoli). Having researched the mozzarella online however, it's made on a small organic farm in Italy in small volumes, using traditional methods and to the highest standards. It tasted delicious too so I'll definitely be be going back whenever I need top quality Italian food. They also have a restaurant/cafe at the back but I only went for groceries.
E. M.
An Edinburgh landmark. Great selection of produce, especially the cheeses. Very friendly staff who were full of knowledge and happy to let us taste samples before buying. The restaurant at the back is small but cosy, with a reasonably priced menu. Service was very fast and food excellent.
R. C.
Best shop in Edinburgh for high quality Italian produce
W.
Great hidden gem in a busy tourist city. If you crave real Italian food or a coffee and dessert this is it.
The cafe is in the back of the deli, you can also find cheese, meat and all great things Italian
D. D.
The 3 stars are for the sheer range of fantastic goods available.
The staff? I haven't a clue because they totally ignored us other than asking if we needed a bag for the things we bought.
Too busy chatting to each other, it felt that we were mere inconveniences. In places like this, the staff seem to think that they are far too specialised to warrant engagement with us general public.
I thought Edinburgh had escaped this sort of behaviour years ago. Apparently not.
L. J.
Had a few days in Edinburgh a fortnight ago, and being an avid fan of Alexander McCall Smith, I couldn't wait to visit Valvona & Crolla! It certainly didn't disappoint, it was everything I'd hoped for. We had a lovely lunch there, and made another trip to buy goodies to take home to Liverpool. I shall be ordering so much from there for friends and family's Christmas presents - just perfect!
C. S.
The best place I have been, I recommend it! The best breakfast, Caffe, cappuccino is absolutely unbelievable!
N. F.
Excellent lunch. Thoroughly recommend. 1st class
D. R.
A great place to go if you're going to cook anything Italian A great selection of dried pasta ,fresh vegetables, olive oils wine's and vinegar's Also some lovely cakes and cheeses
R. S.
An Edinburgh institution - very traditional with good coffee shop to the rear. Prices are top end - though you pay for quality. Shame though that the traders in this parade of shops don't insure the outside area is kept clear of rubbish and that old grafeti is painted over. There is a point when shabby chic moves into run down and that will effect trade
T. V.
The discerning place to have lunch , coffee or some vino in Edinburgh. Through the shop, along shelved corridors lined with comestibles and viandes of every type to tempt the palette and great to peruse afterwards or even take home as a reminder or keepsake of your visit to this grand lady of old.
Eventually you reach the very top of the building and in serried ranks sit Edinburgh's great and good at repast safe in the hands of good food, expansive chat and polite efficient service. Very Edinburgh!
j. m.
Not much to look at from the outside but on entering you can't help splashing the cash on the massive wine selection, chocolate, coffees and the many deli delights. The cafe at the rear is also excellent. This place is a must for anyone visiting the capital.
W. L.
Amazing selection and very friendly staff
L. K.
Hi love this place staff helpfull and friendly.
Always go now and then to get some goodies lovely fresh pasta fress pesto and some snowballs gorge.
S. F.
An Edinburgh Institution, this Italian deli and specialty foodstore is decadent. The cafe nearer to the city center is alright, but the shopping here is worth the trek when you want something special. Excellent meats and wines, and the back dining room is perfect for intimate events and gatherings.
D. B.
When you enter this long established Italian family business you find yourself in a long corridor packed from floor to ceiling with pasta, *panettone, chocolate, cheeses, cold dried sausage, virgin olive oil, a great selection of wine and many other products, too many to mention. At the rear is a cafe, where one can enjoy a coffee with cake or lunch. Friendly service and worth a look- you'll be surprised at what you can find!
D. M.
Famous Italian cafe and shop renowned for its authentic Italian cuisine.
Through the back is the cafe and the front of the shop sells lots of traditional Italian food and drinks. Great place for buying some authentic Italian food for takeway.
I like to go in just to have a wander round at the food on offer as it all looks amazing.
The cafe is good although reasonably expensive when compared to nearby cafés. Highly recommended though, the best place to purchase Italian produce in Edinburgh.
S.
Been many times to the shop, but today I visited the cafe for the first time. Definitely will be back!
D. M.
Fantastic deli for Italian specialties. Great cafe/restaurant for light meals. Wine shop has some interesting finds although the Tignanello is very expensive compared to europe.
A. M.
The shop is great, five stars, but this was my first visit to the caffe bar and I was disappointed. It was an afternoon visit and dolce, tea, coffee, etc were offered. Some prices seemed high especially compared to other Valvona and Crolla outlets - polenta cake served with cream as a dessert much higher than polenta cake in their Jenners outlet. Tea was served in a small pot and was ok, no more. Service was friendly. I do recommend the shop, which is very well worth a visit.
B. P.
Good Italian food. Amazing wines and friendly staff. Not cheap but if you want good quality you need to pay for it. Definitely coming back
J. G.
Wonderful Italian deli for very good quality hams, sausages and cheeses and so on. Nice caffe upstairs where the breakfasts are enormous and very Scottish.
D. C.
Love going in here for a latte and the best bacon and tomato rolls in town. Also great to find authentic Italian produce, meats, vege, bread and wines.
Great place to visit and enjoy.
T. P. F.
Lovely place, friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff and gorgeous produce as well as fab coffee.
S. B.
Perfect place for a browse and to pick up some delicious foods. An authentic Italian deli with all the great food you would expect and also some nice gifts for foodies. I especially like to visit around Christmas where they have a special room for festive gifts.
g. m.
First visit in years. It has not changed thankfully.
Still vast choice of all foods Italian. Will make sure it is not so long till we return
P. P.
Been on Elm Row for decades, quintessential Italian deli but with a cafe thru the back. Love the frittata breakfast roll with nice strong coffee to go with it. Lunch has some lovely choices.
H. D.
So good. I honestly can't stop thinking about this meal. Perfection. Such a nice deli too. I don't think I'll be eating anywhere else in Edinburgh for a while.
R. R.
A shop and cafe specialising in Italian produce. We were not in the cafe but there is a good range of Italian produce and wines and the quality of what we purchased was excellent. The shop has been long established and is an Edinburgh landmark.
j. m.
Great variety of choice, lower shelf labelling was awkward to see as I'm in my late 60s and don't have the sharpest of sight as labels only in a smallish print unlike your average supermarket labels. waiiting time at the till was a bit long with a queue forming before someone notice us.
B. G.
The bistro is always excellent, with a small range of well prepared meals provided with great ingredients. The great ingredients may be because of the deli which it's attached to which is simply divine and has been an Edinburgh shape for generations.
M. B.
An Edinburgh institution, brunch was excellent in the airy cafe with very good coffee. Too many edible and potable treats to mention in the shop.
s. R.
Beautiful tardis of a shop that goes on forever and packed with some amazing food and drink good. Charcuterie and cheese counter is something else.
A. K.
Wow! What an amazing place. Quality products. Friendly and helpful customer service. Can't wait until I go back.
C. F.
Wealth of great produce but comes at a price. Staff are generally happy to assist when having a browse of the cheese and meat counters, often get to try a little bit to persuade you to buy.
M. H.
Valvona is an institution. When you walk in you'll be greeted by and incredible deli counter where you can get all manner of meats. Beyond that, however, is a little sit down restaurant housed by a number of wines by the bottle. Incredible.
J. D.
Six of us recently spent a wonderfully relaxed 'couple' of hours here, catching up over lunch and a bottle or three of vino (including a surprisingly good Prosecco and a good value, gluggable red). Our starters included a tasty radicchio, pear and blue cheese salad from the regular menu and a special of hot, crunchy courgette flower fritters. My main of Sicilian taglierini was generously slathered with pistachio pesto and freshly grated Parmesan. I couldn't really taste the promised lemon zest but no matter; it was still good. My husband though, was disappointed with his dried out somewhat dull chicken dish. Thankfully his mood lifted at pudding time; the orangey chocolate torte (which we shared) was to die for. Or because of.
L. R.
Loved the cafe for macchiato and amazing polenta cake.
G. J.
V&C is an Edinburgh institution which divides people. I think I am unusual when I sit on the fence.
It's very expensive, it's a bit dated and the customer service is seriously hit and miss (I've waited for a good ten minutes tone served at the deli counter, not completely sure why I wasn't being attended to by the second staff member when the first was busy). However - the quality of the deli is great, and it's one of those spots you go to because you suspect they'll have something hard to get hold of (pasta flour, or a particular liqueur) and they always have it.
A. C.
I was really surprised to see this shop but glad to see so many delicious things and cants be found anywhere else. They offers a huge variety of Italian typical food, biscuits, oil etc. And on the back there is a restaurant/cafe.
A. W.
Always nostalgic when inside, the smells and ambiance is first class.
J. T.
A wonderful deli! It's like walking into an Aladdin's Cave, treats and jars and spices are packed floor to ceiling. They've got a great bread and cheese selection, and have a great selection of wines. Yum!
V. X.
True Italian produce, including fresh veg and fruit, good selection of wines and whisky. One of the last old fashioned grocers in Edinburgh. Have a sit in area too.
P. M.
Wonderful Deli and Caffe. The produce and wine are first rate and the selection is wide. The Caffe produces enjoyable meals and snacks. The coffee is good and the service is excellent.
M. C.
What can you say about Valvona & Crolla? It's possibly the best Italian delicatessen outside of Italy, with an amazing range of cheese, cured meats, fresh vegetables (truffles in season), wine and olive oil. The balsamic selection is a little disappointing, the only condimento being a light, sharp vinegar rather than the rich, sweet, smooth ones I've bought in Italy, but the aged DOP balsamic is the real deal. They also sell the best pasta flour in town...!
R. E.
A good lunch menu and decent food that is let down by exorbitant prices; £15 for a small serving of lasagne, or a slither of polenta and half a sausage, on a Tuesday afternoon is not good value.
F. D. F.
Authentic Italian grocery, good selection of products, right prices.
E. M.
Fabulous food. Highly recommend this place. It's a delicatessen shop but walk through to the back of the shop there is the cafe/restaurant. Quaint food is excellent .
J. T.
Just been in here, an it's a hidden gem!! It has a decent size cafe/bistro hidden straight at the back, would've given 5 but the staff never asked how our pizza was. Shame
D. S.
Good selection of Italian food products. Friendly staff. Great for Christmas food gifts.
S. v. (.
Surprised at the amount of bad-vibes towards this place on here.. People say it might have lost its touch and maybe I'm just ignorant to that fact, but I still think this is one of the best places in Leith to pick up your cheeses/meats/breads/seasonings/ANYTHING. The range they have is great and while the prices are above average, the quality is much the same. So it's as expected.
I am often thrown into impromptu Italian lessons upon shopping here when they force some of my shockingly-pronounced Italian words out of me - so make sure to give yourself an extra 10minutes to be mocked if your Italian is rubbish. All in jest!
I. H.
Wonderful wines and cheeses, and Italian delicatessen. But will I pay 17 pounds for a tiny bottle of Balsamico? This is a place for other people.
D. O.
Not sure about the old reviews on here, but when I went the food was delicious. We had a light lunch here with a really tasty bottle of wine. The service was excellent and the atmostphere was very relaxing. I cannot fault this place - lovely!
M. M.
An institution that still delivers the goods. Wonderful. Good cafe/bistro too.
J. E.
Amazing Traditional family run italiano delicatessen,in business for longer than any other, everything an ITALIAN knows to be 'cuisine',whatever it is...it's here...a feast for the eyes & for the palate. j.e.
S. O.
This is foodie heaven. Great little cafe at the back too.
D. C.
One place to visit a old style Italian deli. Amazing top noch food you could spend hours in there
A. F.
Excellent Italian produce! Wide range of cheeses, cured meats and pasta, amongst other things. A little on the expensive side but, if say, you want to make authentic spaghetti alla carbornara, they do sell guanciale and pecorino Romana!
A. M.
First meal out since lockdown. Airy, spaced tables, hygienic. And the food was good too. Booked again without demur.
D. S.
We always enjoy our shopping visits to the marvellous V&C - it's an Edinburgh institution. An amazing selection of food, wine and other fine things.
A. R.
What more can be said about this fantastic shop, massive stock top products and wonderful knowledgeable staff. Good coffee etc in coffee shop. Overall defiantly a 5star
T. M.
Very nice deli if you’re looking for specialty foods and preserves, wines, oils etc. Stuff you really can’t get in supermarkets
C. P.
It’s a question that’s quite frequently asked; if you had to choose a last meal, what would it be? Ok, so, this isn’t a meal as such, and I am being a little greedy, but I would pick a trip to Valvona and Crolla on Elm Row for a last splurge on all the delicious meats and cheeses that grace its glass cabinets.
Growing up in an Italian family, visits to Valvona and Crolla happened every Saturday. I watched mesmerised as slices of prosciutto were laid perfectly on the counter, and wedges of Taleggio were prepared for us to take home. This is where it started, my love affair with this shop and everything it has to offer.
The quality of the produce at Valvona and Crolla is second to none. Yes, you do have to pay for that, but it is worth every penny. Plus you are likely to come across something you hadn’t seen (or tasted) before. Whether a pasta shape, or a new salami, the choice is vast and incredibly tasty.
If you wander further up the back of the shop, you will find yourself at a small café. Using produce from the shop, the menu is varied, having everything from soups and salads, to antipasti and pizza.
So, it’s a favourite of mine, and I’m pretty sure after one visit, it will become a favourite of yours.
J. A.

Very expensive. £27 for 2 coffees, 2 slices of cake and 1 ice cream. If you compare, you can have 3 times that in Mimi's for the same price and quality.
S. F.
One of the best Italian delis in the UK. So why four stars and not five? Could be more spark, more fresh imports. Get in Porchetta and next time it might be a 5!!!!
D. N.
Wide range of traditional food and drinks, really enjoyable to look around. Not cheap, but a great variety of products to peruse. Beautiful store.
P. S.

The show " I've got you under my skin " with Philip Contini and his "Happy Band " was wonderful and incuded Philips great rendition of Cole Porter songs and the story of his colourful life. The musicians were all very professional and the arrangements were first class.
I was going to come back on Thursday but sadly learned it was sold out!! Boo hoo but totally deserved.
Irene Sime (and Jane Mawdsley )
