Stopped on our way home from a girls weekend and was met with a warm welcome and friendly smile! Huge selection of fresh baked goods, delicious looking cakes and breads. Sat outside to enjoy gorgeous views. Food was amazing, even provided with a fluffy hot water bottle each ro keep us warm as we enjoyed our coffee, hot chocolates and cakes. Will absolutely be back. This place is fantastic and has such a lovely, friendly vibe.

Great Bakery and restaurant. Just outside of Balmoral. The baked goods are great, monumental scones!! Stuff sells out so don’t come too late. Also great for a burger (Angus beef or vegetarian) or a top notch Hot Dog, see pics. Nice seating area outside/inside, parking out front. Well worth a stop!

Lovely time at the Hihglanders Balehouse. Best cheese scones I've tried and the local pastry (whose name I forgot:S) were absolutely to die for. The lady and owner was super nice to us. I really recommend! Would have loved to try their hot dishes, we went a wee to late for that😁

What an absolute experience. Worth every penny and more. The burger was incredible and that HOTDOG was like none I've ever had. Everything was next level. The owner was funny and hospitable, can't say enough about this place except I wish we had one back home!

Stopped here for a quick bit after coming down of the Lochnagar mountains. Got a (massive bowl) of piping hot apple and parsnip soup with a mountain of bread and a coffee.. which was fantastic.
Staff where warm and friendly this is a great wee find. 10/10

Best damn food around. Clever, quality food in the homiest, warm/welcoming and personable of environments. Each detail is well thought through. Had we found it earlier, we would have skipped all the cafes in Ballater. Looking forward to coming back!

This is the most amazing little cafe! Amazing food, amazing service and hot water bottles as standard! The selection of homebakes are beautiful, a tea selection, chocolate based hot chocolates and freshly baked bread on offer... A MUST visit!!!

Go! don't wait, if your in the area just do it!
I was riding through the Cairngorms with some friends and after finding our route blocked by a closed road we found ourselves passing the Highlanders Bakehouse. Leading this section of the run I quickly swung the group round to investigate in the hopes of it being another diamond in the rough location, We weren't disappointed!
Having started the day in Ullapool and only having stopped for a morning coffee and cake, it being mid afternoon on arrival a warm late lunch was required. We pilled in, motorcycle gear and all and took over a large table and a spare for all the helmets, it was no qualm, and they quickly saw to us ordering and paying one after the other.
The space is unique, outdoors meets indoors, the seating space is protected from the main elements whilst still being sort of outside, the advantage of this is that you could walk in dripping and not worry about flooding the place or damaging anything. The downside being if it's cold you will still need your layers, but they have thought through this, with either a blanket or sheepskin on every chair. They even have some hot water bottles available if needed! Little touches like this really make a difference and add to the vibe of a place.
The food is fantastic, all freshly prepared on site with wherever possible locally sourced ingredients, the pastries are fabulous! I not to hungry went with a cinnamon swirl that came served warm (definitely the way to go) and with cream, which was delicious, this is with a well made cappuccino to warm me up, saw me right. Others in my party had soup, bacon and egg baps or hot dogs amongst other things, which were mouth watering and all went down very well with big grins all round. The servings are a good size and the quality is top notch.
However whilst all these things will always make a great cafe location, what really made the Highlanders Bakehouse was the atmosphere. This, from my experience, comes directly from the lovely couple that run it, whilst I only had the pleasure of meeting one half of the duo, it is clear they have a passion and love for what they are doing. It shows in every aspect of the quirky, down to earth and artisan location and this naturally flows into your experience there. It is hard not to smile whilst there.
After having a wonderful late lunch and speaking further with the gentleman there (so sorry not to have caught his name) about the bakehouse and its origins whilst I took some photos, we wandered out to the bikes to get ready for the final leg down to Perth. It was with this that a final parting moment that he came out after us and presented us with a bag of 'Butteries' as a gift with a smile for further along our journey.
For me I am lucky enough to spend more time than most in places like this, but this one stands out amongst so many. I will no doubt be back, in fact I can see a trip being planned with this being the intended destination at some point a location like this is easily worth a 1000 mile round trip.

Phenomenol place with a great atmosphere. Excellent food, coffee and very friendly staff. This was our first introduction to a Buttery, and we looked out for them after this for the rest of our trip, but none compared to that first one.
There's space to park campervans along the lay-by outside too.

Great wee cafe. Home made warm scone with butter and jam, with a cappuccino on the side. Highly recommended 👌 🐺. And dog friendly 👌

While visiting the Scotland last year came across this lovely place. The food, cakes etc were fantastic. The owners were very cheerful and friendly. Told all my friends about it.
So when had chance of going to Scotland again this week, couldn't wait to call in again on way back home.
Maltese hot chocolate fantastic. You must also try their scones, would highly recommend.

The best cafe we’ve ever been to!
It was so lovely and friendly. The food was really nice, amazing hot dog and puddings to die for!
So many special touches too. A dog bed and treats, lots of blankets and a cosy hot water bottle bought over by the owners! Such a great place to visit. We will definitely be back one day.
S. F.
Lovely bacon and egg roll. Good cup of coffee. Will be back. Recommended. Not sure about salad with my bacon roll but that's maybe just me. 😂 Hard standing outside for motorbikes all within easy sight of seating area. …
C. A.
Visited today for the first time but it won't be our last. We had the immense hot dogs accompanied by the lovely rolls they are in and nice salad, very tasty😋.
As others have said nice relaxed atmosphere and very welcoming.
We also got some butteries, a scone, slice of lemon cake and carrot cake to go.
We have just had the cake and both were absolutely lovely.
We will definitely be back to see you.
Ps thank you for the extra buttery x

A most incredible cafe. The soups, pancakes, bacon, latte, baked goods are from out of the world!!!

What a fantastic little gem of a place - Excellent, well recommended.
A group of us dropped in for lunch. The staff and owner were just amazing - friendly, service. Interesting story on how this place started up, and I wish them all the success they deserve.
All 10 of us will have no hesitation coming back when touring Scotland and NC500 on our motorcycles.
I'm looking forward to visiting again.

Never written a review on Google before - but never been to a place so worth it.
Outstanding butteries, bread, pastries and coffee. Good chat and laughs from the owners/staff. Been a half-dozen times in the last 3 months, and never, ever disappointed.
J. S.
Tried this place for breakfast and it was great. Owner was very nice and chatty, food was on point. I tried the sugar donut, hot chocolate (real melted chocolate !), cinnamon roll, and the pancakes. All of it was quite good and filling!
K. A.
We just stumbled on this place on our way home from a week riding (motorbiking) in the Highlands. The service was really friendly and welcoming and the scones were awesome! We are starting to plan our next trip so we can go back 😁
K. K.
Probably the best hot chocolate in the world! And everything else was equally delicious, topped with a warm welcome and hot water bottle!
S. A.
Absolutely amazing service and very friendly owners. Hot water bottles and blankets on a rival! Especially enjoyed the hot chocolates with cream, classic hot dog and the spicy chickpea burger. Great spot if your visiting Balmoral castle
N. B.
Had a lovely lunch at the Bakehouse on Saturday, one of the best we've had in a while, especially for service! Lovely cosy atmosphere, blankets on every chair and we even got hot water bottles brought out to our table! Really couldn't fault it, the Hot dogs are to die for and we absolutely loved the focaccia and flavoured mochas 😋 thanks again!!
L. P.
Great lil family run business.
Great cakes, food and coffee. Care has definitely placed into the food. We saw another table have the hotdog and we were jealous.
Slightly over priced in my opinion, but good food is worth it?
c. l.
Great food, probably the best I had in Scotland, surely the best espresso ! Really warm welcoming and fantastic staff, your son is a star ! hope to see you again next time, greetings from Italy.
M. K.
Fantastic place. So highly recommended. Great team. Gorgeous food. A lovely place to be. Lovely to accept my dog being there too. Thank you.

Absolutely amazing food, service and atmosphere!! We ordered the rosemary bread, Carmel apple danish, bacon, cheese breakfast roll, biscof danish, cheese & jalapeño scone , and hot tea to wash it down..Andy added butteries to our order for us to try Plus each of us received a hot water bottle and blanket to keep us toasty.. we will take this wonderful experience back with us to Tennessee.
4 Barbers and a Fisch

Wow, wow and wow!! Amazing scones, didn't try the cakes unfortunately as I'm fat enough, but they looked amazeballs! The owners were incredibly friendly and welcoming.. and finally, the bathroom is a must visit, trust me lol 🤣
L. H.
Really friendly place, bought some pastries to take away after our walk at Balmoral ( very close). Lovely pastries and breads etc. We will be back to sit in for lunch.
S. P.
We came here on a wonderful sunny winter day. As soon as we entered we felt an immadiate sense of warmness. The place is very welcoming and everyone who works here is very friendly. The food is incredibile and the atmsophere makes you wanna stay there for the whole day with warm blankets keeping you cosy. Need to try their hot chocolate (made of real chicolate) with marshmallows and cream. This sets the standard so high it will be hard to find another good hot chocolate that can compete with this one. Also would recommend any other food and pastries they sell, like cinnamon rolls and croissants! Will definetely be back!!
L. S.
Got there today to warm up a bit. Super friendly guys with amazing drinks and baked goods. Can't recommend it enough :)
S. B.
Best coffee shop EVER, we had coffee, hot chocolate and some of the fresh bakes then couldn't resist the fresh bread to take home. All absolutely delicious.

A welcome sight after our afternoon trek up to Prince Albert's Cairn. Excellent service and extremely cosy, thanks to numerous throws and surprisingly, hot water bottles. The hot chocolate is to die for (nice added touch with roasted marshmallows!!). The lemon meringue swirl was deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelicious. Cant rate highly enough
G. M.
Visited Prince Albert's Cairn today, the bakehouse came recommended and I can truly say it didn't disapoint. The hot water bottles are pure genius on a cold day 😊. The hospitality is outstanding. The baking is outstanding 👌
V. C.
We met this place by accident. But we can highly recommend it. Nice service and great cuisine!! We will definitely come again ❤️
T. R.
Stopped off for delicious pancakes and butteries on our cycle. Great friendly local place with excellent set of pastries!
K. H.
Stopped by for lunch today. Absolutely fabulous! So friendly and welcoming! The hot chocolate is delicious! I ordered the spicy veggie burger. It was one of the best veggie burgers I’ve ever had! While sitting for lunch, they have blankets and heaters to keep you warm…and even brought around hot water bottles to keep your lap warm! Never have I had this sort of experience. Unique, very tasty, lovely people. Going back for breakfast on our way out of town. A must stop if you are in the area!

A great place to stop for a bite to eat if you're visiting Balmoral Castle. It is a 1 minute drive / 5 min walk to the Balmoral car park. Wonderful fresh baked goods and good burgers and hot dogs. Really nice family runs the business and takes great care of their guests.
R.
Amazing and friendly wee cafe near Balmoral Castle. We cycled here for lunch and took away some butteries and scones which were all delicious. Looking forward to the next visit here as it's great to support a lovely independent business.
K. H.
This place is A Happy Place of the grandest proportions. From the festive welcome, to the cozy seating, charming decor, fun conversation, outstanding playlist, and the simply stunning food. We weren't even visiting Balmoral -- rerouted our journey after stumbling upon word of that famous hot dog, but ended up sampling nearly every thing on offer that day, with everyone in our family trying something different. That epic dog with it's wild toppings, the piled-high burger, the bright, perfect soup, all the wonderful different buns and breads that accompanied them, the fluffy pancakes, the perfect side salads, local bacon, etc. and the makes-you-swear-when-you-take-a-bite pastries and breads we took to go... every single thing was memorably outstanding.
When someone gets things so right, you can tell that they love what they do, and you can't help but root for them to always be doing what they love, where, and how, and just hope to have the good fortune to get to experience it. The Highlanders Bakehouse will live on in our family's travel legend, keeping us dreaming of a some-day return.

From one Dalmatian lover to another.
Friendly, welcoming, and very yummy food. Couldn’t recommend highly enough!
See you guys again in the summer.

I absolutely love this place. We usually end up out Deeside on the motorbike at some point each weekend during the warmer months and always drop in for a break when we pass. Super friendly staff, the coffee is good and the food is very tasty and to a high home-cooked standard. The "buns of the day" are always a treat - you never know what exciting combination the baker will come up with next. There is seating is inside (well ventilated) and out. Blankets are provide for your lap if it's a little chily. 10/10
N. M.
Lovely spot for a light breakfast or a hearty lunch. Great hosts too. Would very highly recommend.

Remember to tell how much sugar you take.

You need to stop here. No, you need to go out of your way to come here. This place is a gem and I was blown away by how good the food was. A simple burger and hotdog that was anything but. We took 4 pastries to go and I wish I got more. I can’t believe it’s place on the side of the road out of a guys house. I’d eat that hotdog everyday if I could. Open a shop in Boston.. we could use some better food
G. S.
Amazing place food was delicious and host was lovely. Highly recommend
e. c.
Friendly staff, good food, soup and lots of fresh baked made tasty warming lunch. The decor is quirky, lots of recycling Going on. Doggie friendly. Seating is outside but undercover. Toastie heaters, blankets and hot water bottles if required.
A. B.
Amazing Scones and pastries. Their own coffee blend is extremely good and the Terry's orange hot chocolate is stunning. I like the rustic quirky style of the cafe, no pretentions, just quality food and drink.
G. R.
My husband, daughter and I were headed for Prince Albert's pyramid but needed lunch before we set off. We were greeted by the friendly owners, ordered food and sat at a table. With blankets on chairs, hot water bottles available and heaters, we were made to feel cosy and welcomed. The food was delicious! All of the bakes were so tempting. We bought some tantalising foccacia and a Stilton and rosemary cob - fabulous! Highly recommend!
S. M.
Late visit today, but a warm welcome and The Sconnaisseur was most impressed with your fruit scones.
J. W.

Great wee find! First time visit for us but won't be the last. On our way home from a walk and stopped for coffee. Sadly all savoury food sold out as we were late in the day arriving but scones were delicious as was the coffee. Great place. We'll be back to try a Sunday roast!
F. C.
Didn’t eat food but apparently this is good. Friendly staff but coffee wasn’t good

The Highlander Bakehouse bakes their loaves; the bakery is visible on the premises. It has always been busy and clean whenever I have called there.
There us a cafe which serves - I don't know what to call them - delicacies, lovely sweet bready fruit rolls unequalled elsewhere.
We also enjoyed their all day breakfast, good ingredients, plentiful and nicely cooked and presented.
I look forward to visiting the Highlanders Bakehouse again soon.

Lovely friendly staff, lovely bakes, really great lunch ( note: the portions are massive). Didn't give 5 stars only because of no actual plates, cups and cutlery. All of these are compostable but real reusable would get you a 5 star!!
