Reviews of Sous Le Nez
T. B.
Had drinks here before shooting off elsewhere to dine . Nice bar area and lovely staff. Great wine list too. Would have stayed for food but had somewhere else booked. Great place for a drink though and the dining experience i would anticipate it being great
J. D.
We went for my Partner's 60th Birthday 2 days ago .
My first visit the Staff were welcoming and friendly.
The food was amazing.
H.
Very nice dinning experience! Went at lunch time for the lunch set menu which worth every penny of it. The roast duck salad was delicious, perfectly cooked and seasoned duck meat that I'd be happy to have it as my main! The rump steak is perfectly cooked and the peppercorn sauce is simply outstanding! Never had any sort of pepper sauce like it! The sticky toffee pudding, very very nice, tiny bit sweeter than my like but still top quality desert!
K.
Absolutely stunning. Was really pleased to finally visit this place. They reopened the restaurant on 16th June so I thought it would be chaotic but everything was perfect. I couldn't fault the service, the food, the staff or the restaurant. Would definitely visit again.
Set menu was good value (3 courses + wine for £32, no wine for £26). A lot of choice and everything was delicious.
M. O.
Wonderful food. I had fillet stake in peppercorn sauce cooked perfectly rare, but it was not the star of the show. The dauphinoise potatoes, minted new potatoes and cauliflower cheese were bursting with flavour. I think the new potatoes might even have been cooked in butter they were beyond good, better than any potato I have tasted in my 45 years. Next time I will want to go with something more flavoursome than fillet steak so that it isn't overshadowed by the side dishes. I will come again without doubt.
R. N.
Lovely restaurant, great setting and ambiance.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. Very good value especially if ordering from the menu before 7pm. We were celebrating my daughters graduation and it was perfect, thank you x
M. G.
Great restaurant. Lovely sticky toffee pudding.
Would highly recommend a visit for some authentic dining and decor. Not sure about the roof tiles though which do feel a bit like a canteen at school
h.
Excellent extensive wine list& adequate portion size. Nice place for gatherings. However slightly more expensive than other family restaurants about 20-30%.
Liked it, will definitely come back

Love this restaurant every dish is delicious and the earlybird special is amazing value. The fiskcake starter is to die for, not had a bad meal here ever. If I could rate higher I would. Staff wonderful and attentive always.

This was the first time I've been here but my wife raves about it so when your Wedding Anniversary comes around what's a chap to do....have to say I can see why she's so smitten! Food was excellent as was the service!!
They have an A La Carte menu if you want to splash out but we opted for their Menu du Jour (available 5:30 - 7pm on Saturdays).
For £36 each you get a 3 course meal plus a half bottle of wine (Red, White or Rose) and there's plenty of choice too.
Fancy a drink at the bar? No problem - prices here seem reasonable too.
All in all, an enjoyable experience which I'm well ip for repeating.
M. H.
Not been for years but went for lunch with some friends. Ordered from the menu du soir and every course was very good. The house wine was excellent, as was the service. Lovely experience.
G. M.
First time at Sous le Nez for me, although my partner has been many times before with friends. Booked for anniversary dinner and chose the Menu du Sour fixed menu for £30.95pp including half a bottle of wine each. We started with Fishcake and Warm Salad with black pudding, ham hock and apple. Both were sublime and bursting with flavour, setting us up nicely for mains - belly pork with black pudding and Toulouse sausages with cassoulet. Desserts were a trio of ice cream (toffee chocolate being a particular favourite) and dark chocolate bread and butter pudding. Excellent quality food, great service and atmosphere. Hope to visit again soon.
E. H.
Visited for girlfriend’s birthday and the food was exquisite. There is a lengthy wine list, as to be expected, but even some of the cheaper wines are of a far superior quality as to what you would get at most other restaurants at a similar price.
S. M.
Really enjoyable lunch, not been for ages. Same friendly welcome, fantastic tempura prawns with a devine sweet chilli sauce and a fab steak which was cooked to perfection with some lovely peppercorn sauce
B. F.
Very delicious and worth visiting for either lunch of dinner when you’re in Leeds! The staff was very friendly and the service was impeccable. Recommend the Tempura Prawns or Fried Brie for your starter. You won’t regret it! The risotto was delicious as well!
J. H.
Great service and lovely food enjoyed by nine of us for a birthday treat. We all had the fixed price menu and there was plenty of choice.
J. M.
Early bird menu is brilliant value. But book ahead
J. B.
A twist on French dining in the heart of Leeds. Service great, food substantial portions of tasty food if somewhat lacking the total 'joie de vivre' we are used to when actually eating in France. Noticed a number of house wines are not French and more choice of French wines on this part of the menu would be welcomed.
P. F.
Amazing food, went for lunch menu for my 40th. Fantastic service, huge selection of wine.
Classic french menu from this long standing restaurant.
Highly recommended
C. C.
Booked for a family birthday on Saturday afternoon. The staff were friendly and welcoming, an excellent wine list and a mouthwatering menu which wasn't over expensive AND good portions too! Would definitely recommend and would love to go again. Only dropped one star because the accoustics made conversation difficult due to competing noise from other tables.
S. E.
Amazing food, very friendly & attentive staff .
A. E.
Went for Christmas lunch works do.
I think the food is still amazing and the waiting staff are really good.
Its not the same value as long ago when the early bird was £14 but times move on.
Starter for me was duck and goose terrine. Confit duck and goose including a few chunks in a terrine. Lovely gamey taste.
Belly pork. Again confit with a small black pudding bubble and squeak. Gravy was really really tasty. Small portion but all very good.
Mango parfait. They do puddings really well. Creamy mango parfait with a black forest combo of cherry and dark chocolate biscuit.
Still can't fault it. Just not quite as good value as it used to be. But that just probably me forgetting inflation.
K. K.
Absolutely loved Sous Le Nez, especially the 3 course menu. We were in Leeds for 3 nights and the restaurant was so good we went there on 2 of the 3 nights.
L. I.
Oh my, this was perfection. Perfectly cooked, perfectly flavoured, perfect balance of textures and food groups, just 👌
I had the Pan-Roasted Salmon Fillet, Creamed Cabbage, Spinach, Leek & Samphire, Celeriac Rosti & Fennel Hollandaise, and then the most delicious bread and butter pudding I’ve ever had. Everything was just so expertly executed. And good value as well!
j. M.
The food and service was really good. We were s party of 12 friends who really needed this night out and we were not disappointed.
D. W.
Excellent meal and good atmosphere. Lots to choose from and very good early bird menu.
R. J.
Excellent French restaurant. Attentive, funny, friendly staff. Superb food. Nice ambience
A. P.
Outstanding food, a little expensive but so worth it. Beautiful service and lovely restaurant
R. B.
A popular French restaurant and well deservedly so. Went on a Tuesday and was quite busy. If you judge the quality of a French restaurant on the length of its wine list, depth of its creme brule and rareness of its meat you won't be disappointed.
G. C.
Great atmosphere and service. Food was excellent as usual.
N.
Splendid as always.
I love this place I have been going for years. Great food and service. Hidden gem in Leeds.
s. l.
Five minutes from the train station and a world away from the chaos of Leeds. A subterranean delight for all senses, not just the nose! This was on our bucket list for ancestral reasons, this has been a haunt of relatives of olde. My initial thoughts on French meeting Yorkshire food was skeptical, if only our relationship with France was settled here. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming and a pleasure. I ordered sea bass but the need of a black pudding from another menu item had piqued my interest, although questioned was accepted and was a very fine addition to a very fine fish.
Fine food, fine wine and a pleasure to enjoy.
N. F.
What a great place, good honest food, great dining experience at a reasonable cost and what a sensational cellar.
G. W.
We often go to Sous Le Nez for their early bird menu which is absolutely cracking value at £29.99 which includes half a bottle of their very good wine. The atmosphere is lovely and the food devine, we have never had a bad meal their. Everything is done to the highest possible standard.
Go on, book in there and treat your taste buds.
Update 14 April 2022. The price of the menu du soir has increased slightly to £34 during the week but this still represents fabulous value. The good is always consistently wonderful, portion sizes are spot on. Still our favourite restaurant and cannot recommend it highly enough.
A. J.
Excellent place to eat and drink. The food was fantastic. We had the menu de soir which offers great value for money. The only downside on the night was that we were sold a bottle of still water that we thought was going to be tap water. Service was excellent despite this inconvenience, and we would visit again without hesitation.
L. W.
I absolutely love Sous Le Nez. Their private dining room is quiet and an excellent place to celebrate special occasions. Food excellent and great customer service.
W. P.
Excellent food in a nice atmosphere with discreet efficient service.
J. M.
Great food and surroundings. Friendly helpful servers.
R. G.
Great meal, fantastic service and the best Champagne choice in Leeds.
K. F.
Such a wonderful place to eat. We had the 3 course option with half a bottle of wine for £28 pp. The french onion soup was delicious. I honestly can't complement this place enough. The staff are really superb. We will definitely be returning.
L. A.
We had a finish at home meal delivered and it was superb. Instructions were clear and easy to follow and the food was delicious, their attention to detail was great ,right down to the provision of napkins and the packaging and delivery.
Thank you Stephen
R. M.
Restaurant is basic, but don't be fooled, the food was superb.
L. H.
First visit here for us. Introduced to us by my sister and her husband who discovered this fantastic place a little while ago and visit when they can.
Cellar type feel to it but fashionable setting.
We had the early bird meal costing £30.95 each for a 3 course meal and half a bottle of wine each. Worth every penny. The food was perfect. The wine was good.
Staff were very efficient and friendly.
Would highly recommend. A must to book.
Will be going again.
G. T.
Love this place, great food, Great atmosphere, great staff. My only concern is due to current staffing issue of the industry, the menu has been greatly reduced so choice isn't as good.
T. O.
Cracking restaurant, nice to see it back and running. Menu to suit everyone's tastes, been visiting this gem for years and never disappointed. Value and service assured.
d. p.
Great service, good food. Best dinner I've had in a long time!
M. S.
Nice traditional restaurant with deep roots in Leeds, food was good, obviously French courses were better but the restaurant could do with an update, lick of paint perhaps.
L. M.
Cosy and quality! Food is delicious and service - impeccable! Pricey for Leeds, though quality has a price. Great for a business lunch.
A. T.
Amazing food very friendly staff warm and atmospheric. Outstanding wine list. Highly reccomend a visit.
C. M.
Been going for 20 years, amazing food, great service and good value. Very highly recommended
K. M.
Fantastic restaurant and always excellent service. I've been eating here for many years and it's a go to place that has stood the test of time.
P. H.
Well worth a visit. The restaurant is generally busy though so it's advisable to book even at lunch time.
J. C.
Having just come from Paris this is a very English feeling French restaurant, however the food is definitely French and definitely worth coming for.
As a group of 9 we requested a quiet table and were seated at a great spot tucked in the corner. All of us chose to order from the three course menu which includes a half bottle of wine and is good value.
Across all three courses the only complaints were minor ones and many of the dishes were good enough to be memorable for a long time.
The service was both friendly and relaxed while staying professional and helpful.
On the whole I'd highly recommend eating here and would happily come again.
J. R.
Really friendly helpful staff. Nice surroundings and delicious food.
G. S.
Beautiful meal lovely atmosphere
The service was excellent
D. B.
Never disappointed with this fab restaurant. My friends and I decided to go last night to treat ourselves and because the early bird menu is worth its weight in gold.
Excellent staff as always, superb food and that half bottle of wine each is the icing on the cake.
T. A.
Food was amazing, I was stuffed! Very cramped in there but not sure if it was because it was a Friday night.
A.
Beautiful meal at reasonable prices. Will definitely come back again.
V. W.
We went here a month ago (I realise this is a late review). A group of 4 of us had the early evening menu and each of us were so impressed with the food and service! A perfect evening with lovely food and great service. We have been here several times over the last decade and it never fails to impress.
N. P.
Wonderful place. Been coming here for 15 years and it's never anything short of outstanding. Great selection of food and a vast selection of wine. Service is excellent, the staff very helpful and friendly. Best brasserie I have been to in this country.
S. C.
Nice "french" location. Very very very complete and high quality selection of wines. Food and service on the average quality of this kind of restaurant. Promoted for a long dinner with friends and colleagues with taste of wine and time for talking. Not suggested for quick and fast dinner.
J. B.
Arranged to meet college pals here for a reunion for lunch. Friends travelled from Essex, Cheshire and East Yorkshire. What a great venue for us all. Great welcome, efficient but relaxed service and delicious meals all round. We all chose the three course menu including a half bottle of wine.. Everything was just perfect, made all the better as we were not rushed away from our table and thoroughly enjoyed our get together.
Will be returning very soon.
Thank you Sous Le Nez.
M. R.
First time at this centrally located basement restaurant. Great atmosphere on busy evening with excellent value menu du soir - 3 courses for £30.95 with half a bottle of wine. Prompt service with a smile, all staff busy and working altogether to give smooth service - wine glass kept topped up and pace of courses was steady and not hurried. Suggestion made to help with dessert choice and became the perfect end to a wonderful meal.
D. A.
Can't beat it for a quality "bar meal". I've never been into the main restaurant. Steak and chips is always good. The pigeon last week was excellent. Can get quite busy and if you're not wearing a suit you'll look out of place at lunchtime.
d.
High quality food and a welcoming rustic style inside. Early evening menu is excellent value with 3 course and half bottle of wine for under £30. Pigeon is excellent, onion soup is hearty but delicious, fried brie is tasty but a bit too chunky (it is a block of fried cheese after all) and the confit duck is excellent. Worth it.
B. B.
Fantastic food, and in portions that satisfy, this won't be a plate of pretentious foam. Despite the busy evening, service was friendly, quick and knowledgeable. A star missing only due to the price, but still worth it for a small group on a special occasion, not sure if it suits a couple on an intimate night out, as it is understandably busy and buzzy.
a. r.
Went for the early evening menu which was excellent value and really tasty food. £30 for a large French onion soup, delicious pork shoulder and a sticky toffee pudding to finish, all with half a bottle of wine. Good food and friendly staff, will definitely go again.
e. g.
Love this place, staff are lovely really attentive and polite. Food is beautiful second to none, 3 course meal with half a bottle of wine(decent stuff) only £31. Cannot fault it, we often go after the theatre matinee. 😍😍
J. H.
Lovely atmosphere, great food
A. H.
Lovely restaurant that we have visited many times. The staff are welcoming and friendly. There is an impressive wine list from which we were given helpful tips on which wine would compliment our meal. The food - as always - was sublime!
A. W.
Chic French restaurant. Excellent menu, not too long, not too short. Food was rich and delicious. Just what you want from a French bistro. The wine list was a delight too! My wife certainly enjoyed it. 😁
G. W.
Just £29.95 for three superb courses - plenty of options on each course too - and half a bottle of wine. Great value, delicious food. Will definitely be back.
J. Q.
A favourite, a local legend of the Leeds restaurant scene. We try to go every couple of months. Still, by far, the best food in Leeds. Wonderful friendly staff also, who always remember us even if we haven't been for a long time. Will dine here forever.
B. D.
Great, traditional French Restaurant. Always busy, always a warm welcome and good service. Immense wine list, but would suggest asking for a recomendation from the knowledgeable staff, who take delight in bringing you z hidden gem of a wine...
P. J.
As previously; excellent. The food is truly exceptional.
Service is friendly and good humoured.
The early bird is really good value.
The black pudding starter is divine, melts in the mouth like chocolate does, bit good as is the dark chocolate mousse.
P. R.
This restaurant is absolutely unbelievable!! The menu is balanced and provides for all tastes. The food is prepared with wonderful ingredients and served in a delightful manner. Full selection of wines and beers. An absolute must for a long lunch.
C. W.
Excellent service, quality meals and has been for the last 30+ years!!!
N. B.
Very good stake and loved the fries. All 3 of us had the same rib eye stake and fries. And sticky toffee pudding was to die for. Pleasant helpful staff.
Noisy like all Leeds restaurants but good choice of seating
M. M.
A very good menu and cooked to perfection. Very friendly staff and great service. I'll definitely be going back several times to experience the entirety of the menu as there isn't a single item on there that doesn't sound delicious.
N. J.
This sub terrainian eatery has been here for many years, it must be doing something right.
We opted for the early-bird menu, three courses including a half bottle of house wine each for £30.
Our starters were lovely, fish soup, mackerel & salmon pate and fish cake - all good.
Mains were pigeon, confit duck leg and lambs liver. All served with good quality vegetables and sauces, there was just one disappointment - the lambs liver was over cooked. Had there been a mid-course quality check I might have mentioned this, but with a lady guest in tow there’s no way I was sending it back anyway - a last resort only used for inedible disasters!
Puddings were lovely, a noteworthy mention for the Husband’s croissant bread and butter pudding!
The house wines were very pleasant if not sophisticated, but I’m not complaining as they are included in the good-value menu.
Service was mostly good, perhaps a little over-familiarity from one chap but otherwise efficient. The low-ceilinged cellar gets very noisy when busy, but it’s great to see a successful restaurant being well patronised.
L. T.
We enjoyed ourselves immensely and thought the food excellent, although it is definitely not a bargain. The food is really a mix of English and French, all done very well and very thoughtfully. If it were more appropriately priced, I'd say five stars. The prices cause you to expect a different experience. I was very happy with the wine selection and the recommendation of the sommelier who recommended an excellent and (relative to the expensive list) inexpensive French Malbec. They have an early prix fixe that is probably the way to go.
C. F.
If you don't mind starting your meal before 7pm, the Menu Du Soir is excellent value - £24.95 for 3 courses and half a bottle of wine. The portions are generous and the food is delicious. Can heartily recommend the pork shank and the seared pigeon breast for a main meal - beautiful flavours.
Whilst the decor is simple, and not in a rustic way, the service is warm, prompt, but not intrusive.
C. G.
Been here once on a Saturday. Food good. service good. Located downstairs.
While you are in the area take a look in the Liberal club reception area, just down the road. Huge stained glass widows etc...it's like a set from one of those high class James bond movies!
A. B.
Fantastic quality & lovely service. Pricey though
L. F.
Good food, a little on the expensive side.
G. B.
We came late with no reservation and they fixed a very nice table for two. Real French food, very tasty and good, and a selection of wines on glass. Recommended!
J. B.
Never disappoints. Quality French cuisine with reliable service and worth every penny.
J. M.
The best restaurant in Leeds bar none and something of a food institution. The food is absolutely first class and so too is the wine list which is all served at the right temperature.
It ain't cheap but it's not crazy expensive either and has none of the pretense that other places in Leeds does although the restaurant is generally quite quiet so don't expect a party. You will struggle to find a better eatery in Leeds.
K. B.
The place serves large portions and for fair rates. helpful staff members. Great work.
C. T.
Been here many times, for the menu du soir during the weekdays. Costs 29 pounds including half a bottle of the house wine. Large choice of dishes, with a menu which does not change much from year to year. Well presented, interesting food
T. W.
I went to Sous Le Nez in August 2013 as part of my sisters / mums birthday. I don't need to say too much in this review as it was simply outstanding. The food, drink and service were all top-notch and the menu has a good variety so there should be something on there for everyone.
Be aware that this place provides 'rich' food and what doesn't look like much will really fill you up. I had the Venison main course and it didn't touch sides!
The only negative, and this is being very picky, is that it's in a basement so it's a bit dark. Some natural light would be lovely, but they do manage to make it feel cosy and homely with the lighting they have in there.
5 stars from me.
a. j.
Excellent centre of Leeds restaurant. Convivial atmosphere / varied menu / efficient service / tasty fair.
S. S.
Been going here for decades never had a bad meal. It was good as ever for my birthday
H. K.
Food was amazing, wine was delicious. Only thing I took a point off for was that we were seated and no one gave us a menu - waited a while and lots if staff walked past and had to prompt someone to get them for us.
B. C.
Lovely French restaurant in a cosy basement location in central Leeds. Good value if you can get there before 7 for the early bird menu. House wine is fine.
R. M.
Excellent food with very good service
S. S.
Had a gorgeous lunch, great, attention to the service and the food was excellent.
T. W.
We had a delicious lunchtime meal today, every course was wonderfully presented and tasted fabulous. Attentive staff and a restful, calm atmosphere, 5/5.
S. L.
Love this little gem and would recommend a visit. French restraunt with a great menu even there early bird has plenty of choice . Very helpful friendly staff relaxing atmosphere. Must be the best one in leeds. Sticky toffee pudding to die for.
G. P. (.
Amazing experience. Wine selection is outstanding. Not a huge fan of French cuisine but this place magical . Staff is extremely professional
S. K.
Food was OK, a little disappointing with how long I had to wait each time for service. Nice decor. Could do with a little heating and music so not cold and silent.
M. S.
Fabulous food and such friendly staff. They have the biggest (and best) wine list (well book really) tuat I've ever seen. I can't wait to go again 😊
E.
One of my all time favourite places to eat and still fabulous after all these years. Love it here!
L. S. W.
Had a fabulous evening with friends at Sous Le Nez on the early bird menu. The welcome was warm and friendly and I felt like a regular customer which endeared me to the team. The décor is lovely, it is like a fabulous French bistro and has bags of ambiance. The three of us had 3 different starters and were equally impressed with our choices in taste, quality and presentation.
I would have preferred to have some crusty French bread rather than a small dinner roll, it would just seem more fitting in my opinion.
The main courses were delicious and generous. I chose the rib-eye steak which was gorgeous, the steak had lots of flavour and was cooked to the perfect medium. The vegetables served were a lovely mix and again cooked to perfection. My friends had the Dorade with Purple Gnocchi! We could not help but have dessert, we ordered Creme Brulee and Sticky Toffee Pudding, if I have had the room I would have ordered a second Creme Brulee.
Overall I am really looking forward to my next visit as the food and service are excellent.
H. K.
Good: fish soup, Ceasar's salad, Halibut.
Not so good: the dry-aged beef filet was quite dry (no pun intended), not juicy at all, and looked like boiled meat. When we politely voiced this, the waiter explained as per the chef's definition that state to be due to the dry aging.
I would have normally rated the restaurant a 4; -1 for the beef and for not taking the complaint seriously.
e. r.
Beautiful! Great service and great food.... no signal though oh golly gosh what am I going to do??? Oh yes that's right enjoy my meal with the company I am with..... just lovely, can not wait to go back !!!!
M. H.

Despite the circumstances the staff of Sous Le Nez were able to maintain the same excellent level of service they provide. The food was exceptional as always.
T. W.
Excellent set menu meal and fabulous services
R. L.
As always - fantastic atmosphere and place to be. Lovely food as always but this time we were slightly disappointed with portion sizes, especially the steak which attracts a £3 premium.
C. A.
Went last year for my birthday and the food was such high quality. The wine we had was also amazing.
Great as a romantic meal for 2
C. W.
Excellent service and good food
N. M.

T. F.
Faultless meal out - great service, exquisite food, good ambience and we felt really safe as hygiene and safety taken very seriously.
A. H.
The best restaurant I have been to so far in Leeds. Great classic hearty French food. A bit on the pricy side, but you get what you pay for.
D. L.
The food and wine was excellent. The staff were friendly and very accommodating. This is now my favourite restaurant in Leeds.
G. H.
Amazing meal for a large group booking, highly recommended!

M. G.
Great food, friendly service
C. M.
Good but not great. Table service is excellent. One of the better meals I've had in Leeds albeit expensive and no phone coverage when seated
T. S.
Staff seemed to be on the up sell as soon as we arrived. Not sure if our wine preferences were completely taken into account. Wine average, food good, very expensive.
C. W.
Great atmosphere and amazing food. Love that you can't get phone signal here. Great for going out with friends or a romantic meal.
L. X.
