Reviews of Wygston's House Bar & Restaurant
H. M.
Lovely building to be in. Had sunday lunch. Staff were great. Food overall was reasonably good although our party sent one mushroom starter back and they forgot items in my order. Mussels were slightly gritty and some cracked. Carrots not properly cleaned. Gravy was bang average however and disappointing. There was plenty though. These are things any chef ought to get proper sorted given Sunday lunch is a key part of their service. Improvements needed for sure but it is a fairly good.

Eat in our eat outside. Either way it's a great place to dine and enjoy a drink. I was particularly impressed with the burger. Tbf calling it a burger is a massive understatement. The food here was fabulous. Service very friendly. Nice location on the square. I'll definitely go there again next time I'm in Leicester. 👍🏾
S. C.
Very old building, partly Tudor and partly Georgian I think. No information about the history of the place on their website unfortunately.
We ordered Gammon and chips and Cod and chips. The Gammon was well received but my Cod and chips wasn't too good, fish wasn't very fresh, batter not very nice, chips not very appetising, disappointing.
Toilet had a broken soap bottle, so no soap, and an empty bottle of hand sanitiser, not good either.
Nice roaring fire however on a very cold day.
Not for me I'm afraid.
W.
Nice place to enjoy good beer in a clean friendly atmosphere, the staff are very helpful chatty and friendly, just what you want whilst enjoy a social moment. Try the food, looks good. Outside sitting is good to take in the new improved square, all down to King Richard IIIs popularity.
At this time of writing 2022 the cathedral is closed for much needed improvements so check. Other interesting places will take up a good day out in a city full of interests.

Enjoyed a lovely mother's birthday lunch with my daughter, granddaughter and two great granddaughters aged 2 and 3 yesterday. The food was plentiful, well cooked, with a good variety of vegetables. Nothing was to much trouble for the attentive friendly staff. We were offered a complimentary drink on arrival as it was mothers day, which was a lovely gesture. I would certainly recommend this place and will definitely come here again, to this unique old building.

A truly wonderful place to meet. Log fire! (How often do you find that in the City Centre - well maybe it can be done). This place is just fab. Why? Relaxing environment, caring staff, a very well run venue, historic. We found it very Covid aware and we felt safe. Menu is a lot more than OK and fairly comprehensive, the food is good. We have our Christmas Day arranged but if we hadn't I think this may well be a good place to be. Do not lose this venue Leicester!

Service was really good, friendly and fast. We came here for a Sunday roast and their portions are very big. I ordered the three roast meal (chicken, pork belly and sirloin strips) along with all the trimmings. I expected to only be served a little of each meat, but I think I actually received the same sized portion of meat as someone who ordered just the chicken for example.
I couldn't finish all my mains, so they offered me a container to take some home, which was nice of them. And they accommodated a few changes we asked to our desserts, which was really kind of them.
D. C.
A lovely piece of steak cooked beautifully, lovely sauce and very good service. One gripe still playing Xmas songs 21st Jan.
But highly recommended
K. G.
Came here for the roast and was outstanding. Really have no words other than you need to try it. Also came here on a separate occasion for dinner and was amazing too.
S. J.
Well presented pub within Leicester city centre, an old building with lots of interesting features, I especially like the room the the wood burning fire and tall backed seats. Choice of British and Belgium ales for the beer drinkers and the usual selection of wines and spirits. The staff knew their job so no waiting to get served, prices in keeping with the location and environment. Worth a visit.
K. B.
We ate here lunch time today a table of 5 we had a lovely lunch the best we have had out in a long time. The food was hot well presented and tasty and really well priced. Even though the bar was chocca with drinkers we were looked after really well by the lovely staff 2 of us are in the trade and appreciate how hard it can be to keep customers happy well we were thank you
L. P.
Lovely Mothers Day dinner here. Food was beautiful and the service was brilliant. Nice little treats for Mums too which was nice! Definitely made the day and glad we came here for our dinner
C. L.
Great place to eat and drink set inside one of the oldest buildings in the city centre. Close to the cathedral, King Richard exhibition, Jewry Wall, Castle Gardens and Highcross shopping area
Excellent service as well
Highly recommended
P. I.
Lovely real ales. Wide range of other beers, good wines. Not all drunk by me was with others who agreed haha. Staff friendly, lovely building. Sat outside. Eaten there in past but not recently, was good food
E. B.
Went for my bday june 5th. Had the mushrooms on toast starter. Unreal. Had the 3 meat Sunday roast. Unreal. Had the apple and cinnamon crumble with requested cold custard. UNREAL. 😂. It’s the tastiest food I’ve had in a long long while from a restaurant. Staff were so helpful and polite. I’m going back soon. Thank you for a lovely afternoon
N.
Stumbled across Wygstons House while looking for the street art festival, but what a great surprise. Great pub, great beer and even decent value pub food. Now go back every time we can.
t. f.
Very nice bar with choice of drinking and eating in or outside, and a cosy real fire on last visit. Plenty of seats and perfect on a sunny day.
d. l.
Great beer, great atmosphere, great pub find, staff were extremely helpful.
J. P.

Y. P.
Great food good prices the cocktails was so nice 😋
K. G.
My fave pub in town, oozing with history, lovely selection of beer, dog friendly and decent food.
I don't give 5 stars lightly!
d.
One of the oldest pubs in Leicester. Really homely good atmosphere, good beverages, ideal meeting place or place to chill for an hour or two
J. W.
Another fabulous Sunday lunch. Festive menu is onat the moment. To start we had the baked brie and salmon pate, delicious! For mainsHubby and myself had beef brisket with creamy mash and all the trimmings. Our son had the porchetta again with all the trimmings. Too full for a pud. Set prices for 1, 2 or 3 courses. Good value for money and lovely staff! Can't seem to add any photos which is a shame.
M. C.
Great venue for drinks, not tried the food. A great place for sitting outside in the sunshine
C. M.
Made to feel very welcome
The inside is amazing decor is fantastic.
The food is out of this world highly recommend.
a. r.
Lovely place great staff went for Sunday dinner food great, pudding was delayed due to being busy and understaffed but it's worth going food was lovely, and the staff worked hard to keep customers happy, I will definitely go back again, need a gooseberry and apple crumble 🙂
A. N.
Staff were very helpful, good food. Made for a pleasant evening, hope to go back.
J. P.
Wonderful Mothers day lunch with a glass of prosecco and chocs for mums. Didn't feel rushed and the food was excellent
D. B.
Lovely place! Lovely staff! Lovely beer! Would highly recommend!
A. J.
First time visiting, probably won't be the last. We didn't have meals but chips were lovely. Good range of drinks on offer and an enjoyable atmosphere, even when it became busier throughout the evening. Also a nice venue for playing a murder mystery game!
V. V. G.
It's amazing to sit outside, went with a friend and had a lovely time drinking gin!
k. f.
Had Christmas Day lunch here and the food was amazing! Thoroughly recommend it. Lovely pub with fantastic bar staff. Thank you! 🤗
T. F.
Beautiful place, decent beers. Great open fires, very welcoming.
S. B.
Good selection of ales and cozy seating with wood fires in the front rooms. Great place on a cold night.
A. B.
Lovely pub, close to DM University, great decior, ooen fires and the staff are welcoming and warm.
We had three meals, fish and chips and mushy peas which my wife said was one the best she had in a long time.
My meduim rare sirloin was cooked perfectly, and the hot spicy chicken wings were a beaut.
Dog friendly and prices were good too, three beersand three meals with sude, just over 70 quid, so overall, very happy with our visit, id always head here now when in Leicester.
S.
Been here a few times for the Sunday roast, lovely venue awesome good with plenty to eat. It is more pricey than most places but it's worth it. See you again soon!
N. G.
Lovely building and ambience, friendly staff and great food
J. K.
Great to have real fire in the rooms, great Sunday Lunch, but not cheap. Also surprisingly empty but it was right after Christmas/New Year
D. G.
Great pub, great service with a smile, sitting there right now with a perfectly poured pint of vixen!
c. b.
Great building and a fantastic selection of cocktails. Would recommend xx
C. W.
Disappointed as they hadn't got a licence which we didn't know about when the meal was booked. The food and service were jut okay. I think it was overpriced 👎
J. S.
Lovely meal beautifully cooked and presented, helpful staff and a good atmosphere made for a very pleasant evening. Fabulous old building too 😊
D.
We had our team Christmas lunch here - gorgeous food, stunning building, great staff. Will definitely be back!
A. M.
Went in for a drink as usual. They had a full glowing fire on lovely on the cold day.
c. m.
This is a lovely place to have a drink. Staff were super friendly, they had real ale (hard to find at this moment in time) and the venue is beautiful. Wish we had started our night here. Looking forward to coming back and sitting in the sun.
L. R.
Wonderful setting. Had festive meal good choices all very good and good value. Friendly helpful staff
T. M. -. Y.
Service is fast, attentive & friendly & can't beat the outdoor area to have a drink in the afternoon sun. The cocktails I've tried have been good and the guinness is decent too. Beautiful old building, win all around.
T. C.
Really nice pub, good food and nice atmosphere
J. W.
Best place in leicester for food or drinks even with covid restrictions! Whole team should be proud! Thank you, we will keep coming back!
A. H.
Smashing pub and restaurant, had a lovely Christmas menu. The staff were great. Thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon
S. B.
Been here a few times for food and I am never disappointed in the quality and presentation, I love this place because staff are friendly and it is the perfect place for all ages and for food or just a drink, highly recommended!!
J. P.
We have visited this lovely pub many times
The building is stunning both inside and out, the staff are always friendly and the owner always makes us feel very welcome. Added to that, the music is to our liking and most importantly a perfect pint of Guinness!
On this occasion we opted for medium rare steaks which were cooked to perfection, served with chips and a well dressed salad. Complemented with a bottle of red wine and a Guinness of course made for another lovely afternoon in this pub.
A must place to visit!
R. P.
Great pub, lovely interior and loads of space outside to chill out, including a space in Jubilee Square which is great for people watching. Food is top notch too, with a good chef and excellent staff - recommended
J. D.
Really friendly staff had us seated and served after a short wait in the queue! Drinks were great and the food was amazing. Highly recommend anyone to visit this beautiful pub/restaurant !
H. (.
Great food. Perfect Sunday Roast. Great waitress.
C. M.
Great meals great selection of drinks great location. It's quickly became my favourite place in Leicester due to its summer and winter versatility!
B. B.
Nice bar decent beer plenty of seating outside
B.
Not much under £15 for three pints was a bit steep I thought!! The old building is fantastic, social distancing was being maintained and the outside area is pretty good. We are back down for work again all next week but not sure we would rush back to this pub unless the weather is good.
G. M.
First place I visited after the pub gardens opened. I really like what they've done with their outside area. Drinks were really nice. Food was amazing! Service was excellent!
S. S.
Beautiful pub great Belgian beers and a lovely terrace
A. F.
Fantastic quality Sunday roast in this lovely rustic building, quickly becoming the weekly favourite!
I highly recommend the pork belly, moist and crispy to perfection and every accompaniment just as nicely prepared, from the Chantenay carrots to the red cabbage and Yorkshire pudding, and of course homemade gravy.
All credits to head chef Stephan who does a wonderful job!
K. E.
Quite nice old vibe. It's one of the more expensive pubs in town. Disappointing real ale selection with only 2 hand pumps and no 'real' cider. Ordered the chicken bacon caesar salad, perfectly tasty but technically not a caesar salad as it contains cucumber, radish, red pepper, rocket and tomatoes (I usually order a caesar salad as I don't like several of these things so it saves having to ask for them to be removed or picking them out) and at £10 it's not a cheap salad (more expensive than a burger) on the subject of burgers these do not come with fries which have to brought separately at an additional £2.95.
Very helpful with a celiac guest, chef came out to help guide what they could and couldn't do, but veggie selection very limited (one sandwich and one burger only) which disappointed a vegetarian friend. Overall I would visit again but guests with dietary limitations may be disappointed.
M. M.
What not to like about this place. Stunning real fires. Amazing staff and beautiful beer.
A. S.
Situated on the left side of the cathedral. I visited yesterday evening to have a meal. Staff was very courteous and kind. Food was lovely, especially the burgers. I highly recommend it.
M. C.
We were taken here by friends we were visiting and really enjoyed it. We were seated upstairs because downstairs was full. There was a "Festive menu" available which was excellent. I had roasted scallops followed by pork belly. My spouse had squash and carrot soup followed by roast turkey. We were too full for a dessert! The food was excellent!
T. H.
Love this venue!! Seriously it's like you are sitting in your own living room!!!
Relaxed ....real fire...cosy furnishings too.
M. f.
Lovely old building, beer choice not bad
J. G.
Wygston’s House is the oldest house in Leicester. It has been here since medieval times and the road it stood on, High Street, was the widest and busiest thoroughfare in the town.
We don’t know why this house survives when others, which may have been significantly grander, have not. It would have been close to the meeting houses of two powerful medieval guilds, Corpus Christi and St. George, and the house may have had a religious role.
K. C.
Beautiful old pub so cosy by the fire on a cold day. Menu good variety
d. m.
Quirky pub great staff great food well worth a visit
T. F.
Had a great Sunday lunch with very good beer
K.
Lovely old place , we had drinks was welcomed in by lovely staff very attentive to us would definitely recommend. Foods good as well .
C.
Decent place but needs work. Downstairs bar service was incredibly slow. They had 3 people on and still took forever to make a very simple order. Restaurant staff were really friendly. Starter was good but don't get the gnocchi main. There's an incredibly funky tasting minty oil doused over the whole thing which dominates the flavour and destroys it completely, and isn't mentioned on the menu. Also for a place that is trying really hard to be fancy, you'd think they could invest in a card machine upstairs, because if you're paying on card you have to go back to the incredibly slow bar downstairs and wait to be served, just to pay your bill!
C. B.
The food was of average quality and only just warm enough. I think that the price of £23 for a 2 course Xmas meal was too high for the quality of the meal. Service was fairly slow. The building exterior and interior are both beautiful hence 3 stars instead of 2. I might come back for a coffee but would not bother with a meal and would much prefer to eat at 1573.
I. P.
A very good pub
.very good real ale.very good bar staff.my favourite pub in leicester
C. B.
Great drinks + staff but it was bloody cold in the bar
P. D.
Plenty of under canopy seats whilst Covid restrictions still in place.
Good service quite quick.
Very tasty food. Nice location.
D. S.
Quaint timbered building built c 1490. Old tree too not sure if it's a Strawberry Tree.
B. H.
Bar service was quick and friendly. Nice food, very large group so food was slow. Forgot my colleagues cheese course and didn't bring it until we'd all finished our desserts. Packed up another dessert to take home.
J. G.
The building is great and it's so nice sitting in front of a stove fire with some of the best food in the city. Can't wait to go back for their happy hour or gin nights when the lockdown lifts and can go out. First stop on a night out
M. C.
We visited Wygston House for the first time on Valentine's Day.
Firstly and by far the most important thing to say is the food was superb. Although a relatively restricted menu there was a good range of dishes and everything we has was fresh, full of flavour and very well cooked. The chef certainly did a great job and deserves complementing.
The second thing I'd say is the building is magnificent. Possibly the downstairs bar is a little cold, in both senses but, the upstairs dinning room is spectacular. A great venue.
Thirdly however, a couple of constructive criticisms. If I'm paying £45.00 per head I don't expect paper napkins of the standard you'd get in a fast food joint. Also, I've read the previous reviews that comment on staff training. I have to say I don't expect to be handed a bottle of very warm rose wine with the top still on it with a shrug and the words "should I be pouring this out?" and then have to ask twice to get an ice bucket. Maybe an old style maitre d might sharpen up the act and even get the staff to smarten-up their appearance and skills.
As I said the food was really special so why spoil it with such small things that are easily fixed. Do that and next time I'll give you 5 stars and maybe next year you'll be full on Valentine's Day.
D. R.
Great vibe and atmosphere, a good selection of drinks and cocktails, would definitely come again.
M. C.
Visiting daughter at Uni with our dog and stumbled on this dog friendly pub for lunch. Friendly staff and best fillet steak ever
E.
Had a lovely Christmas Dinner here last week. Would very much recommend.
C. B.
Lovely Tudor building with the main bar and restaurant and two Georgian rooms at the front.
In a brilliant location overlooking jubilee square.
Great choice of real ales Cider and spirits.
I haven't eaten there yet but im looking forward to as everyone speaks very highly of the food.
M. O.
Lovely seating area (especially in covid times) and stellar staff service (the two pint stein's are alright aswell). 10/10 definitely going back.
D. M.
Came here for Sunday lunch. Ate downstairs in the bar area. The drinks are a great price and a massive selection. As for the food oh my god! This place knows how to nail a Sunday roast!!!! Best in Leicester town centre for sure!
F. C.
The location is very nice as well the place. It is very good for both having a meal or just a drink or coffee/tea even outside.
R.
Lovely looking bar, we didn't eat. So this is 3 stars for the bar.. But 3 drinks, 2 lagers and a whiskey.. £13.50. OK its not wetherspoons, but still at the very top end of pricing
M. S.
Excellent food, friendly staff
K. M.
I have been told this is the oldest building in leicester, and it oozes character. Never had food here, so can't review that, but the atmosphere, decor, staff and beer are first class. They have a lovely log burner in one of the rooms too, great place.
C. H.
This is a great place to spend a summer's day. It's also a nice chilled place on an evening, where it never seems too busy. Probably has the best beer garden in town - it's huge. You won't find a more historic venue to drink in Leicester, it's situated in a very quaint old wooden building with warped beams and wattle and daub walls (so I'm guessing).
E. F.
Unfortunately members of our party, being of senior years, couldn't make the stairs of this wonderful building. We had a lovely, well presented, tasty meal amidst a very happy, loud party of students which spoilt it for us.
R. B.
Great staff paired with amazing food and service. Food is priced amazing, yet delivered with fine dining specification. Even though the venue is a 10/10 it's nothing compared to the staff food and drinks served which is an amazing 100/10
M. R.
First time there and liked it. Good atmosphere, good music, fast service and nice location. Will come back.
D. C.
A unique place to enjoy some of the finer things in life! One of the oldest buildings in Leicester has been brought back to life offering delicious food and an extensive selection behind the bar. Stunning timber framed building with a leafy outdoor area adjoining jubilee square, a must-visit for those looking for something a little different.
M. D.
Amazing food and reasonable priced with a good selection of drinks
I. W.
Used to be Leicester's Costume Museum but was closed for many years. Now reopened as a cafe bar serving several real ales in a nice cosy environment. Roaring fire going in the room where we sat. Not a huge building but a very pleasant and warm for a cold December evening.
R. G.
Had dinner from the bar menu and loved it, fantastically thick serloin steak and melt in you mouth calamari. Can't wait to return.
L. M.
Wygston's House is a truly amazing pub and restaurant. A beautiful place to spend time, the incredible main hall is timber framed in heavy medieval Oak beams, dating from around 1490, arguably the prettiest in the City centre that isn't a museum! Every visit feels like an occasion just to be in there. But you can drink and eat here too! The roasts here recently are quite simply the best I have had anywhere in the country. Every component is cooked and seasoned to perfection, crunchy roasties, rich proper meat gravy, tender meat with crispy edges, the nicest pigs in blankets I've had. This place deserves to thrive and be booked out for dining! Keep up the good work and don't lose the informal, friendly tone of the staff, let their personalities out! It helps keep the atmosphere real and inviting. Mardy, fomal staff can ruin a place. Want mainstream and trendy? The blandly branded homogeny so prevalent these days? Go elsewhere! Want character, beauty, quality, relaxed and pleasingly leftfield atmosphere? Look no further. I even heard Dylan on the speakers. Older blues, folk and Jazz seems to suit the place. Support and enjoy this splendid piece of Leicester Folk history. Bravo! Book early...
I. R.
Lovely restaurant very good food and service. Not keen on downstairs bar area. Feels like a city pub doesn't make enough of the timber framed building
M. K.
The most important thing I learned is that this is The Oldest House in Leicester dating from the 14th hundreds.
Very friendly staff. I didn't really feel like I was in town anymore even though the location is in city centre.
R. D. D.
Sunday roast on my birthday was Beaut! Apart from 1 little problem, the soup my mum had she said it was very nice but the bowl wasn't even half full.
J. H.
Great place for a drink and food... Just a litte dusty in some place... Might be due to the open fires!
A. P.
Lovely venue. Beer fine. Outstanding outside garden in the city centre. Tables and counters a tad "sticky" at times.
T. V.
A rather lovely quaint building and a nice warm atmosphere. We enjoyed our sandwich and chips by the fire. What's not to like!
s.
Nice Outside in the veranda where Friendly Staff circulated to take Orders - No need for all that Texting In Business
