Reviews of The Jews House Restaurant

Stayed to celebrate in Lincoln just for one night, so we wanted something special.
We had high expectations, and that place still overdelivered.
The portions are very interesting, but also substantial. You won't leave hungry, I promise.
Sorbet was the name of the game. Horseradish sorbet, coriander sorbet, melon sorbet. Absolutely amazing.
The service was very friendly, but extremely precise.
Overall, immensely enjoyed the visit. Probably the best dinner we've had in the UK this year.

Simple the best in Lincoln. Makes the scamper up and down steep hill worth every step.
Great service, warm abs attentive staff in a beautiful setting.
Having been here multiple times and heard the sameoif others, we would definitely recommend the Jews House!

Located in a beautiful 12th century stone house on the famous Steep Hill, I was told this is arguably the best restaurant in Lincoln. Based on my experience, I won't be the one disputing that. I absolutely loved it!
It is sympathetically restored and beautifully decorated. Modern additions of light stained framewood contrasts with the much older darker beams. The white painted ceiling between the beams and white walls brightens the place, but not too much, just enough, as it is combined with rich ochre and exposed stone walls. The palette of rich, bold ochre and red colours continues in the choice of materials, the velvet chairs and wall sitting area wonderfully complementing the darker wood of the tables.
At the same time, the dimmed lighting provided by the lamps carefully positioned, almost requires a few minutes for your eyes to get used to it and take it all in. It is then, when sitting at the table that one can really appreciate the beauty of the place: stylish, upmarket, very elegant and classy, almost with a feel of a stately home.
The way in, through a narrow and low ceiling side passage, is wonderfully quirky and totally belies what is to come. It almost has a theatrical way about it, opening into the compact entrance where you are met by the superb Samantha and staff.
The food is absolutely delicious. I went all fishy on the day: cornish turbot as starter and seabass as main. I loved the imagination of some of the elements on the plate and the combination of flavours and textures, as well as the presentation.
I chose the strawberry n elderflower jelly dessert on the day, with champagne consommé, white chocolate mousse and a rapsberry sorbet. Sweetness and acidity perfectly balanced and a fitting end to a wonderful meal.
The atmosphere is great, very relaxed, so much so that I established easy conversation with some of the dinners, some regular customers driving over an hour to come to this restaurant as, according to them, it is not only the best restaurant in Lincoln but one of the very best in the area.
And if you are into wine, fear not, the wine list is extensive and Samantha's knowledge phenomenal.
A beautiful restaurant with delicious food, great staff and exceptional service. Unmissable!

Why don’t we come here more often?
I have lived in Lincoln all of my adult life and enjoy eating out a lot, Lincoln doesn’t have too many fine dining restaurants so when my wife suggested that we would go out and celebrate my birthday we had the usual discussion “where shall we go”
The decision was made to go to Jews house and sincerely what a decision, we arrived slightly early and had the option to sit in the lounge area or go to the table we decided to go directly to the table and enjoy the atmosphere of the room.
We ordered our first drinks Fabulous gin and tonic perfectly served. As we arrived early we had to wait a few minutes to order which wasn’t a problem and was told as we arrived due to a large table who had just ordered all handled very well. We ordered our food I was so impressed with the waitress who explained the whole menu in detail which massively impressed me.
My beetroot terrine arrive with horseradish sorbet was amazing the presentation along with the taste of the dish was genuinely outstanding. The mains arrived which was sea bass along with seasonal vegetables which again was amazing. I have used so many superlatives in this review because the food was so good.
We decided against the taster menu but listening to the explanations of the wine and food means we will definitely return for this very soon.
Go and visiting this restaurant it is fabulous !

Small, intimate, high-end restaurant set in a wonderfully characterful old property halfway up the hill in Lincoln. Offers a la carte dining and a 5-course tasting menu with wine pairings. Exceptionally friendly staff. We tried the tasting menu and while two dishes were excellent, there were several noticeable blips in quality (including a pancake that was clearly burnt to look at let alone taste), and overall the menu wasn't particularly imaginative. If you have the luxury of being able to go further afield, there are better experiences to be had for this price. If you're limited to Lincoln, though, I think there's nothing else that competes.

We arrived for our anniversary dinner at 8pm on a June evening not knowing what to expect. The restaurant is very cosy, only about 6 tables (but possibly a private dining room upstairs?), but with around 4 waiting staff so service was flawless, and they didn't feel intrusive at any point. We had the taster menu which, while not cheap, was flawless. A great meal.

Very experimental cuisine at high price level
Excellent Service. The tasting Menu contains dishes Like pork Belly with apricot Sorbet which exceeded my scope of taste. Others dishes Well prepared and served. Historic Building with nice Ambiente.

Lovely food and atmosphere for a fancy meal. Food was nice but nothing stood out as being fantastic. My partners cheese board looked super and I wished I'd gone for that. We paid £100 per head including wine and tip.
E.
Simply wonderful. From entering the restaurant , to saying goodbye, the entire evening was superb. Food was exquisite. Service superb.
They must be due their first star soon.
Thank you for a great time.

We booked the 5 course taster & full flight wine menu and it was fantastic without fault. Gorgeous pairing of flavours with complimenting wine. Hope to come back again soon.

An amazing location and stunning food that does the historic building justice. Really should have a michelin star, the food was delicious and the wine pairings were spot on. Staff were really friendly and we had a perfect evening here.

An excellent venue. The tasting menu was absolutely fantastic. The food was really lovely. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the food and wine. We highly recommend this historic restaurant.

Having read the previous bad reviews I was quite sceptical about dining here. My wife and I went for Sunday lunch today and I was blown away! Amazing flavours in every dish and the service was exceptional. Will certainly be returning in the near future.

Fantastic quality food and wine.
Service was professionally and Informative.
Highly recommend if your looking for a fine dining experience.

Is this the best restaurant in Lincoln? If it isn't, it is certainly fabulous enough to be.
As a familial visitor to Lincoln, I tend to stay and eat the the home of my relations. On this occasion we had cause to celebrate and a friend of my Cousin's recommended the Jews House restaurant.
The Jews House is set in a medieval house with some considerable history, so it it is no surprise that the layout and feel of the building is cosy and unique. We were received with elegant grace by an immaculately presented team and invited to the ante-room upstairs, where we were offered a choice of wines as a pre-dinner drink.
The warm evening's choice was a very pleasant Rioja Rosé wine. So pleasant, we finished their stock of this particular wine before the end of our meal.
The menu may appear limited in quantity but it is exquisitely designed to cater for a broad range of tastes. How is that? when you receive your first course, you realise why it is so. The presentation of the food, the delicacy and range of flavour, the perfection of the textures and absolute attention to detail all but leave you in awe of the team working in the kitchen.
I was so inspired by the home made Focaccia, that I asked if I could possibly trouble Chef for the recipe. I don't expect I will receive it. If fact, I am not certain I would share it if it were mine!
The taster menu is tempting and as we watched the couple sitting next to our table travel through a wonderful and exciting culinary road trip, we considered it. But in the end, we each chose a different dish for starter, main and dessert. Without exception, everything was presented with style and elegance. Each and every bite released a unique explosion of flavours and textures, never to disappoint.
So, the verdict you know. 6 stars of course! But Google does not provide that option.
I judge a good restaurant by the atmosphere, the service and the food. Most provide a good mixture of two - I am seldom blown over by the food and often think on how I can improve it to fit my taste.
The Jews House Restaurant excels in all counts; The service is elegant, formal, precise and extremely professional. How do I judge this? I grew up in Vienna where service is always at the height of the profession and staff are professionals in the field.
The building, décor and atmosphere are simple, stylish, elegant and merge extremely well into a medieval building that is part of the unique history of the city.
The food and drink cannot fail. I cannot think of a single thing I would change to my taste. Not one element. Every mouthful a complete delight.
As we left to walk up the hill towards the Cathedral, we found ourselves satisfied but not replete. Happy and pleased with our find and a determination to return when I next visit family in Lincoln. I retain a slim hope of obtaining the recipe for the focaccia...
Thank you all for a wonderful evening.

Thank you Samantha and Gavin for this lovely experience! Samantha was very attentive, service was good and her descriptions of the food and wine pairing were on point👌 which really made the full experience. The full wine flight pairing was perfect with the 5 course tasting menu that we took. The atmosphere was very cosy and nice. And the homemade bread was amazing!! 🥰 (Forgot to take photos of all the food🙈 but it was💣)

Great place for those special special occasions. Lovely surroundings in the oldest building in Lincoln, attentive staff, great service lovely and well presented food. Some may say it's a little expensive, but when you put the package together it's a great value dining treat.

Food at the jews house. Just fantastic ..in particular the pork belly/miso starter...and the chocolate dessert. But everything that came out of the kitchen was fab , we couldnt fault it. Chef is from Glasgow. Names Gavin . His partner is front of house. The attention to detail was fab. We were looked after really well ....
J. L.
What a treat the food is absolutely divine. Presented beautifully and the flavours complemented each other .A warm friendly atmosphere where attention to detail is all part of the experience and what a truly wonderful experience it was .thank you all team Jews house.Just looking for our next booking .

Just organised a 50th birthday party and it was the absolute best evening! Food was just insane and the service outstanding! Massive thank you for making the night so memorable. We all agreed we would walk over hot coals to have the pecan chocolate tart again. Xox

Where is the michelin star?
Every time we go here the food is amazing. The service is exceptional. Fantastic. Yes, it's pricey but it's worth the cost. Never once left thinking "that was expensive", always just thought "what a superb evening" and that's exactly how it should be.
Nice one Jew's House.
G. F.
Unbelievable food and superb front of house. Thanks for making our trip to Lincoln such a memorable experience we'll be making another visit!!!

Excellent food and a well balanced menu, served by friendly attentive staff.

First experience of the Jews House and a very good one. Excellent cooking and attentive staff. Great to see a cheese board listed on the menu. Definitely returning.

Had the taster menu on Saturday evening. This restaurant is really first class. Staff are excellent, full of enthusiasm and knowledge. Food and wine are top quality and beautifully presented.
S. H.
This must be the best restaurant in Lincoln. If you are looking for excellent food, wine and ambiance with an wonderful front of house, this is it. You have to try the 4 course tasting menu.
C. T.
Amazing food and service. Experimental fine dining at its best.
M. P.
Loved it. The A la Carte menu, whilst with only three options during the daytime for starter, main and dessert, was fantastic. The chefs were friendly and approachable, staff the same and were very attentive and professional
Can’t fault it. Fine dining with excellent service in one of the most historic houses in the country. Lincoln should be very proud of this restaurant. We’ll be visiting again.
S. L.
Fabulous meal in a beautiful dining room. Menu was very good as were the dishes presented. Wine list was extensive...slightly disappointed that my first choice wasn't available but that's life!

Fabulous tasting menu, better than several Michelin star restaurants I have eaten in recently. Great service with a lovely pace to to the meal.
P. B.
Absolutely stunning, an amazing experience, the food is superb and the wine was excellent, cannot praise them enough and although it was our first visit it definitely won't be our last.
C. Z.
We had the most fantastic meal here last night, if I could give them more stars I would! The food was absolutely stunning and reminded me of a meal I had at the Michelin restaurant The Kitchin in Edinburgh. To think that we have food of this standard in a small city like Lincoln is very exciting. Samantha is the perfect front of house and all the staff were lovely.
H. D.
Service was fantastic, couldnt fault it. The team work really hard to make it a great dining experience. Had the set valentines menu. Food was average, i think given the amazing photos on the website my partner and i had too high expectations as we felt that the food wasnt presented as well as we hoped for the cost. Nice evening for the service experience but unlikely to return.
S. A.
We were a party of four who dined last evening at the Jews House Restaurant. The service offered by Sam and her team was exceptional. We were blown away by the taster menu created by the Head Chef / Co-owner Gavin. This was a special evening of fine dining in lovely surroundings. Fine dining at its best
G. C.
Lovely building and interesting tasting menu.
Most of the courses were very good but hot belly pork with an overly strong Miso glaze with a prawn didn't complement icy melon sorbet on the same plate.
Service was a little slow at times, staff were friendly.
D. S.
Ate here at the beginning of August. Food was amazing. Portion size appeared a little small but I left feeling full not stuffed. This is moderately fine dining, definitely above average type of establishment. Service was good. Decor good. Highly recommended.
S. M.
Myself and the wife loved this place last night. The food and presentation as well as the attentive staff was excellent and made the evening very enjoyable with a relaxing atmosphere. If you like your wines then your in for a treat. Advisable to book in advance as well.

Quite simply one of the finest dining experiences in Lincoln. I have sampled the lunchtime menu on several occasions and on each have been impressed by the high standard of both presentation and taste. Having eaten at Michelin-starred restaurants, I must say that the Jews House Restaurant compares most favourably without the pretence one sometimes encounters at such establishments. In fact, I would say that the culinary delights on the menu are amongst some of the finest I have tasted both here in the UK and on regular visits to France. If you are in search of a fine dining experience in the Lincoln area then look no further than the Jews House.
S. D. S.
Food was delicious although a star is lost for the very small portion size, I'm not a big eater and could have definitely eaten more.
Service was outstanding, and the wine recommendations were fantastic.

We went for the four course taster menu and added on a cheese board to share. Everything that was brought out was beautifully presented and tasted even better than it looked. All of the staff were very polite and attentive, making for a lovely evening. Would highly recommended, but if you plan to go you will need to book in advance!

The Jew's house is a historical building in Lincoln currently serving as one of the cities better restaurants. As one would expect, the food, winelist and service is faultless, with quality being the priority. It's not overly pretentious though and dress code is fairly relaxed. If you enjoy your dining you can be sure of a good welcome here.
J. S.
We always have e a good meal here, even though we hadn't been for a number of years the owner recognised us and gave us a warm welcome. All the staff were very helpful and knowledgeable.about the menu and explained you dish when they served you.
M. W.
Having been staying in Lincoln, on and off, for around a month and eating out every night I can say that this is the best restaurant I have yet come across in the area. It is a little more pricey than most, but the quality of the food is unmatched. I had the Gressingham Duck Breast and it was perhaps the best duck dish I have had.
Highly recommended for a special night out.
D.
Lunch time deal is incredible value for money. Wine is great - house white by the glass is lovely. Service is attentive but not obtrusive. Very pleasant lunch experience.
R. T.
Samantha and Gavin catered for our small wedding reception a few days ago and they couldn't have been more amenable to our needs. Their food and service was amazing ,the room we ate in was private and attractively decorated. We couldn't have been happier and will certainly be back to enjoy Gavins excellent dishes again.
S. P.
Service was stellar! From the host to the waitstaff everyone representing the restaurant was truly wonderful. The tasting menu was good and maybe a little overpriced, but for New York City it's probably right on target. Great place for friends or special occasion!
A. R.
We often eat here when visiting Lincoln. This visit there was nothing on the menu I could eat and the waitress checked with the chef and very kindly cooked me a chicken breast with the same veg they served with the duck breast. Lovely building with a great atmosphere and fab staff
G. W.
Lincoln's top restaurant for fine dining. We had the 4-course tasting menu. The roast Lavingtob lamb was the best I've ever had. The Trifle Elements dessert was cr have, fun, and delicious. Chef Gavin Aitkenhead is inspired.
T. B.
Really excellent food and service on a recent visit. Can be a bit quiet at times, feeling like you have to whisper otherwise you'd be too loud in quite a small dining area. Still the food is well worth the visit.
G. L.
Tasting menu this time, getting towards the end of summer but they continue to present simply superb seasonal dishes. What can you add? Lovely atmosphere, tasteful decor, understated quality service.
D. R.
Fantastic/out of this world food, you lucky people living in Lincoln, if you have not eaten at this place you are missing the best food you will ever taste, I have been to some of the best restaurants in the world, believe me this chef is the best.
The staff are all amazing, the place is historic and needs more flair, but the food is that good you would eat it in a cellar.
Best of Luck to you, you certainly deserve it.

Really nice place half way up Steep Hill. It's not cheap, but you well and truly get what you pay for. The food is local, interesting and of very high quality, and the service is impeccable. The building is pretty atmospheric too. Highly recommended.
E. A.
This was quite possibly the best meal I’ve had. It’s expensive, but well worth it as a special evening out. Very friendly staff and absolutely delicious food. Thank you!
L. C.
Fantastic, sublime food but very small portions
P. W.
Absolutely incredible. Food and service, both outstanding.
K. S.
Our first visit to The Jews House. Excellent food, and very attentive staff.
R. W.
Delicious food & top class service. 48hr short rib of beef to die for!
P. G.
Didnt eat in the restaurant as it was closed. We stood outside and marvelled at the building. It almost seems a miracle that it is still standing. Doesn't seem to be a straight line in any of the walls. Suppose as it has stood for hundreds of years its not going to fall down now
E. R.
Beautiful and interesting food. Amazing atmosphere as well, although we could have done without the table next to ours being stripped and disinfected at the end of the night
D. S.
Very good meat and fish dishes! One of the best in Lincoln. Maybe a bit expansive, but quality is not for free right?
