Reviews of Apero Restaurant & Bar

Loved brunch at Apero. Extremely well priced for South Kensington and great food - would have posted more pictures but it was so good that we started eating as soon as food came!
Relaxing atmosphere and great decor. They also have two private spaces that would be great for a dinner with friends.
Service was so friendly and efficient, and importantly they didn’t judge when we ordered the same things twice 😂
Hope to be back soon and strongly recommend if you’re in the area.

Nice place, almost hidden off the corner around the V&A museum.
Good decor, great host, quick and friendly service. We only came in for a quick drink but ended up having 2 and staying for some food as well as the place started to fill up.
Cocktails were first class and really not that expensive; great looking and tasting.
Also try the antipasti board, very good quality meats and cheese.
Nice work guys 👍👍👍👍

I've been here a couple times and decided to write a review because it's really great - atmosphere is super cosy, food is tasty, tapas-style, so perfect for sharing and suits both for a light eat but also full dinner if you wish.
Cocktails selection is excellent and price-quality ratio is very good, especially for the area. Location-wise it's pretty good also.
One thing I would say is that while the service is good (polite and friendly), it can take a bit of time to grab the waiter's attention. Didn't really spoil my experience though, because of the food.

Amazing food and service. The sharing menu which cost £22 per person (excluding VAT and service charge) totally exceeded my expectations for its quantity and quality. Would definitely visit again.

Decor and setup is lovely, staff is friendly. The menu is simple - breakfast / brunch and burger mostly and yet the output is very average. Burgers are over cooked and food is pretty slow. A good backup option but would not come back.

We went in to Apero on spec today and really enjoyed the lunch special menu. Delicious food and wine, great service and very reasonably priced. The bar is cosy with modern med. decor and our Spanish waitress was super efficient, attentive and friendly. Highly recommended and we will definitely be back! Thank you to all the team at Apero for a great experience.

I love this place! We visited a couple of days ago to escape the cold and rain. They served a very nice aperol spritz and some very nice snacks. The staff were the friendliest and so welcoming. The atmosphere of the whole place was great. Will definitely seek it out again when I'm in London!

Signage is discreet for this Mediterranean restaurant.
A bit dark walking in and unwelcoming but once inside, it is quite warm and comfortable. Pleasant atmosphere. Food is served on plates to share - family style. I thought the portions were a bit small for sharing except for the beef cheeks with pasta. Interesting cocktail menu. I enjoyed this restaurant. Recommended. Thumbs up if you like my review please.

Decided to have dinner here while in the area, after noting the high rating on Google maps. We were shown to a nice, quiet corner table away from the bar, which allowed us some privacy. At around 7pm, candles were lit and placed on each table, and the lights were turned down which created a romantic mood. The menu suggests 2 or 3 dishes per person, so we went with 5 to share. We chose the flatbreads with a trio of dips, the gnocchi, courgette cannelloni, sea bass and the braised oxtail. We also tried a couple of the cocktails - the Dippy (yum!) and Snowy Peak. My favourite dish was the gnocchi with pesto and mushrooms. The texture and seasoning were just right. I also loved the sea bass which was cooked simply but perfectly, and tasted delicious with the seaweed butter and a squeeze of lemon. The courgette cannelloni with spinach and chestnut was not the pasta dish I was expecting, but a very delicately flavoured vegetable construction. The oxtail just fell off the bone and came with a rich, smoky sauce, potatoes and rainbow chard. The bread was warm and dips great, particularly the guacamole. Overall the entire meal was excellent. My only critique is that none of the dishes were delivered with serving utensils, meaning we had to use our own cutlery to divide and serve. This wasn't an issue for us, but I think it could be a little uncomfortable if you were eating with someone you weren't particularly close to. A special mention must be made for the service we experienced which, from the start, was very professional, yet natural and attentive. Each staff member we encountered was welcoming and courteous. It really makes such a difference! The total cost was £87 including service. We'll be back soon.

Fantastic food and perfect service, had a great night thanks.
We will be back

Dinner on the way to Albert hall. Good selection for a meatless meal. Squid risotto was the best. All food appealing to the eye and fresh. Flat bred was the only disapointment, but it was good value with dips coming with it. Very nice staff and smart feeling in the place. I recommend Lesc 2017 white wine, very good for the price 👌

Apero is a gorgeous all-day Mediterranean brasserie and cocktail bar, within the Ampersand Hotel in South Kensington. It is light and bright, with a modern, minimalist and sophisticated interior and radiates the mediterranean vibes with its bright primary colours, off-set with metallics, and tiled flooring. The friendly service and overall atmosphere give a welcoming and relaxed aura – just what you’re after for a slow afternoon bottomless brunch in Kensington.
The “Pranzo Della Nonna” brunch is translated to ‘An Afternoon at Grandma’s’. You are meant to feel as though you’re with family, enjoying plenty of food and drinks! We can confirm, plenty of food is exactly what this menu provides.
The menu is inspired by seasonal ingredients and is designed to be shared (£22.50 per person). It currently features:
a homemade focaccia with olive tapenade and oil
Burrata with chicory and blood orange
a charcuterie selection
mix grilled vegetables
mixed leaf salad
polenta, fennel sausage & radicchio
seafood risotto
tart of the day
The homemade focaccia with olive tapenade and oil was served warm in a cast iron dish. It was salty, with a fab texture and taste. The olive tapenade in the oil was absolutely delicious. We couldn’t get enough!
The Burrata with chicory and blood orange looked beautiful and tasted fantastic. It was deliciously creamy, and complimented well by the drops of blood orange. The crunchy, fresh chicory and small slice of bruschetta completed this starter well. We really enjoyed this dish!
The charcuterie selection was larger than expected. It was piled with a good selection of delicious fresh cold meats, as well as arancini, cheese and cauliflower. Unfortunately, the arancini wasn’t really anything special, but the cheese and meat, as well as a delicious sweet onion chutney definitely made up for it.
The seafood risotto was deliciously creamy, yet rich and spiced in flavour. It was a great risotto, with plenty of shellfish and squid, all cooked perfectly.
The polenta, fennel sausage & radicchio was a little different. The polenta, served as a semolina-style dish, didn’t have much flavour. However, the rich, herby fennel sausage was super tasty and packed with flavour, and alongside the radicchio made this dish better.
To finish off, the tart of the day is a sweet option. When we visited it was a delicious, creamy, red cherry-style tart, with a caramelized sugar top. It was incredible! Served with a little vanilla ice cream, it really rounded off the brunch, finishing on a complete high.
Alongside all of this food, the menu offers the option to go bottomless (£37.50pp). This offer covers prosecco, mimosas and Aperol Spritz. We loved the fact you could opt for Aperol Spritz which we haven’t seen elsewhere, and you can mix and match so you don’t have to stick to the same drink. The Aperol Spritz is made perfectly – it had that signature taste which all too often do people get the ratio wrong.
It really is bottomless too – the hosts were always checking in. If we felt they hadn’t popped back for a while we just left our empty glasses on the end of the table and they soon noticed.
Apero is a beautiful, relaxed location where you really do feel at home. We had a private booth which was a great touch. The food was fantastic, the drinks choice was great and the service was super friendly and attentive. It’s definitely a fantastic and affordable bottomless brunch in Kensington.

Overall a decent experience. Stopped in here after seeing the Cirque de Soleil show Luzia. in Royal Albert Hall. It’s a quaint brassiere located in the basement of a Graded building. Didn’t know it serves as essentially the cafe of boutique hotel Ampersand. Caveat emptor! Do be prepared to be slapped with a hefty service charge on top of the bill….
A. D.
Amazing drinks, friendly staff. Cozy atmosphere. This basement bar is the perfect place to have a drink with your friends or just a romantic date. Try the PowPow if you like smokey taste and smell in your drink. Come here before or after dinner. The furniture and the design of the bar is really nice and clean.

We stayed at The Ampersand Hotel in Oct 2018 and ate at Apero several times. Everything was delicious! The atmosphere is cozy and romantic. The waiters were very friendly. Highly recommend.
S. C.
The atmosphere was perfect. We got several items to share and we loved them all. The drinks were fantastic too, with great creativity.
A. A.
Cozy and quiet. Loved the food overall. I was sad that their takeaway box was made in cardboard and they had no other plastic containers to take my leftover yoghurt.
C. M.
Great place with awesome cocktails, nice atmosphere, reasonably priced and surprisingly it wasn't busy at all. Would go again if I wanted drinks in the area.
D. C.
What a great place - food was bloody marvellous, with a relaxed atmosphere, full of a total variety of people. The cocktails are superb and the staff lovely - very highly recommended.
G. P.
Always had a great experience at Apero. Most of the staff are very kind and helpful, the tapas are very good and quite “innovative”. The wine list is great and overall the price is good.
I recommend it for a nice family or celebratory dinner!
Y.
Great place. A bit hidden as it is inside a hotel. A nice quiet place where you can hear each other talk. Great cocktails and perfect for a small group.
L. Q.
Delicious food with fabulous service. Great place for early dinner before a show at the Royal Albert Hall.
D. L.
Negatives: could use better hot sauce than tobasco. Little pricey.
Positives: everything else. Very good food quality, prompt and professional service. Great breakfast options. Highly recommend it.
M. G.
Good food. Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere. Lunch menu was great value and very delicious.
P. B.
Lovely setting, you could easily lose a few hours here. Very good quality breakfast, definitely not a greasy spoon set up! Also very clean individual toilets. 5 star all the way!
E. R.
Fantastic spot. Great service. Hidden gem under the ampersand hotel. Everything is fresh from the breads to the tartare. Try the smoked mackerel pate. Laszlo at the bar is the nicest guy and will craft you some amazing cocktails and recommend great food for you tastes. We stayed at the Ampersand and never knew this was here until our last night. Promise you it's worth checking out from a foodie and sit at the bar with Laszlo.
C. G.
Great location, cool and trendy interior, good atmosphere. Staff professional and attentive. Nibbles were very good. Main was very expensive for a small portion of pasta so wouldn't recommend that. Maybe try the tapas?
K. G.
Great good and cocktails in the basement of the Ampersand Hotel in South Kensington, The food is amazing very interesting small sharing plates using seasonal ingredients that are very well presented
C. M.
Nice restaurant. Food a bit tapas style but very good enjoyed the stone bass particularly.
T. S.
Stunning spot, great service, delicious food, tiny portions
J. L.
Great place for a drink before going out. We have a shared platter, which was decent, but didn't really try other food.
P.
The smell of smoke.. they need to fix the kitchen ventilation - As a client you leave brunch with a heavy Smokey smell otherwise. Shame!
J. B.
Went for dinner, great food! Service attentive, friendly and efficient. Great location and will definitely come back next time I am hanging out in South Ken!
G. R.
Atmosphere, quietness, food was nice. Good service. Awesome. Would recommend.

I booked for my husband's 50th birthday on Christmas Eve, and we were the only ones in the restaurant due to the early time. Our waiter was super friendly, the food came super quick after being ordered. At the end of the meal, the chef had prepared a special treat for my husband despite us being too full to order dessert, and we received complimentary champagne which was so appreciated. The food itself was incredible. This is going to be our Go To place for dinner now in South Kensington. Thanks Apero team, you made my husband's birthday super special!!
G. T.
Wonderful evening spent at Apero. The food is absolutely delicious, fresh and extremely high quality and the cocktails are delicious.
C. J.
Great cocktails, cool location, wonderful atmosphere AND the background music wasn't too loud so we could actually talk without shouting AND hear each other. Very nice waitor Fabio was cheerful, friendly and knowledgeable. He was really understanding when we wanted our bill divided up differently, he changed it quickly and efficiently with a nice big smile!
G. S.
Great food, great staff! Highly recommended!

Incredible food/drinks, attentive/friendly service, wonderful atmosphere/decor...highly recommended! Will be back for sure.

A great South Kensington find. Excellent food (many small plates for sharing), good wine list, and friendly hosts and servers. Really cool design as well-- nice ambiance. Would definitely return.
R. L.
A very nice cocktail bar. It's not easy to find a nice bar around here, much less one with good cocktails and this is both. I'm very happy I stumbled across it as I always end up either on a long walk to a nicer pub or a not very nice pub. This is definitely on the repertoire now. It is however, pricey so don't come here expecting a cheap bill!

Hello Apero! Well we are impressed. Wow. Tempted not to review for the selfish reason of keeping the find to ourselves. Had a stunning selection of delicate and exquisitely flavoured dishes with friends, washed down with impressive cocktails. Relaxed, cosy, up market, good value - definitely our new favourite place to dine when in town. Now just need an excuse to book a room..
m. T.
Good spanish tapas ,good atmosphere, the cocktail is a little bit pricey.

The four of us had dinner at Apero last night as walk-in customers, we did not have a booking. It did not matter, we got a table in the bar area which was very nice. The cocktails were excellent and food was perfect. I had the squid risotto and others had lamb and rib eye; all cooked to perfection. The service is smart and prompt, with no pressure to move on. Prices not bad considering west London. Will return with a booking so we can get one of those little niche rooms to ourselves!
E. A.
Excellent dinner.
- Prices are varied & the tapas element allows for sharing.
- Decoration is smart & welcoming
- Service was prompt & our waitress was very friendly, good choice of food & interesting cocktails.

Been here many times. I used this restaurant for business meeting and working lunch. Service is always good and set lunch is very good value for money. Food is very mediterranean and healthy. I like the atmosphere even though it is technically a basement restaurant. If you come ask for the special secluded table for 2 in the middle of the restaurant by the window which offers privacy and feels slightly naughty !

Open until really, really late, with a great drink list and rather delicious gnocchi, it's a really good pic for date night. The wait staff is super friendly, and the environment is warm and inviting, and it had a really quiet crowd, making it perfect for conversation.
J. C.
Pleased to find a nice restaurant in South Kensington that is actually worth the money. Choices in the area are generally substandard but Apero bucks the local trend (or lack thereof). The pomegranate glazed duck was delicious, highly recommended. Lime and sesame chicken wings were nothing amazing but a decent portion size made up for it. Service was attentive and efficient. Atmosphere relaxed, laid back, a lovely departure from the hustle and bustle of South Kensington.
S. A.
An amazing space, with perfect contemporary Mediterranean decor, but the brunch wasn't exactly life changing. The "Med Mary" (a Bloody Mary made with Mediterranean Gin) was a stand out, one of the best I've had in London, but the Eggs Benedict was quite plain, and the muffin was under-toasted. The side of field mushrooms was equally bland, while the hand-cut chips were quite tasty, but also nothing to rave about.
In sum, a nice atmosphere, good service, nice cocktails, but mediocre food.
J. S. B. D.
The four stars is for the food. The service would recieve two, maybe three stars. Pressure and over management of the head waiter has created a pressured environment where you are expected to order drinks the second you sit down, with some olives and bread etc etc. Two mins after viewing the menu you are expected to have made up your mind. After being approached four times by different wait staff within the first 10 minutes, I had to make the statement, "I will call you over when we have decided what we would like" I can say, the food makes the pressured service worth the experience. Nice decor and the staff are really only following orders from their 'stressed out manager'. I have been several times and would go again.

Coeliac Thumbs up! Great location and atmosphere, the staff are friendly, welcoming and helpful. The food is excellent! Options of a fixed price fresh continental buffet, or reasonably priced a la carte menu. Eggs florentine for the win! The French toast with peaches came a close second.
M. A.
I was impressed by how simple the dish looked and how it was able to tickle my nitpicking taste buds! I ordered Mushrooms with poached eggs on a muffin with hollandaise sauce and it was perfect. However, the cappuccino I ordered was just average, drinkable I would say.
L. A.
Lovely little bar that offers a decent wine selection and good cocktails. The food is also noteworthy, being a mix of small plates as well as more substantial dishes. Service is friendly and relaxed.
S. P.
Such a great place to have tapas with friends. Alternatively, amazing to organise group dinners, birthday, etc and taste the wine menu. Great food, great service, and not stuffy. What’s not to love? Will organise another big dinner party in the story soon !
P.
Very charming staff in a characterful basement (there's a great semi-private room at the back that could seat about 10 around a single big table) with tasty fulsome plates of Italian food. Very good for the area which is low on non-chain restaurants.
B. A.
A wide selection for breakfast, offering both a la carte and buffet options. Lunch and dinner are also remarkable and not over-priced for this type of venue. The decor is chic and informal. You may see some hotel guests as this is part of a hotel, but it is worth a visit.
b. p.
Great atmosphere.
Small portions, taste was ok. Seems the serve is lacking.
Maybe our choice of the menu was not successful, the place seems to offer interesting food.
Maybe worth another try

Fab, the staff is super friendly and professional. The food is GREAT.

Great service, and fresh, tasty food.

I visited Apreo many years ago and loved feel for the place then, but visiting today I was very impressed to see the modern touches have made this resturant bar even better than I remember.
Great food, not overpriced for Kensington and some excellent recommended cocktails. Staff are friendly but firm, this is not like the hotel bars you may have visited before.
J. R.
Cocktail menu to start. Tapas style entrees accompanied by amazing bread. Great selection of small bites. Just choose 2 at a time, no rush!

Tucked beneath The Ampersand Hotel, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Apero is run of the mill. As you descend the polished wooden staircase, you soon realise that it’s anything but. A curio of Mediterranean bowls, wooden utensils and conch shells are all warmly backlit to welcome you into the vaulted cellars of one of South Kensington’s most interesting hotels. ‘An all-day neighbourhood brasserie’, Apero is overseen by Head Chef Chris Golding whose mission is to serve up unpretentious, seasonal food in a relaxed atmosphere. And deliver he does.
The restaurant is perfectly intimate with coffee-coloured wood furniture set against white tiles and brickwork. Small snugs are cloaked by heavy velvet curtains, but if you’re feeling a little informal, you can sit up at the bar and chat to the barman as he shakes you up one of their delicious cocktails.
We started with the Frescobaldi (Sipsmith gin, Limoncello and Fino sherry) and the Quattro Fiumi (aged bourbon, Cointreau, lychee, strawberries, rose syrup, lemon, black pepper and balsamic syrup). Intriguingly named, all Apero’s cocktails are influenced by artists found in the nearby Victoria & Albert Museum, and their quests for enlightenment. With an achingly fresh citrus burst, a perfectly balanced fruity cocktail that had a bit of a kick, and lashings of warm, homemade rosemary and onion bread with apple balsamic vinegar, we were certainly of the same school of thought.
Ravenous, we turned to the menu. Channelling Mediterranean influences, the food is designed to be shared. They recommend two or three reasonably priced dishes each or instead, go for the chef’s selection of his signature dishes like us and be prepared to eat like kings.
To start, stracciatella (a cheese similar to mozzarella) with beetroot. Cubes of delicate yet tangy beetroot and swirls of vivid, fresh pink worked perfectly with the creamy cheese was a perfect way to open the meal. We had ours with an Aperol Spritz on the side - a fizzy little number with a bittersweet warmth.
Then came the fish course. A beautiful plate of seared yellow fin tuna, with avocado and lemon, and a salad of fresh French beans and kohlrabi. This dish was perfectly balanced - the succulent tuna coupled with the citrus zing of the pureed avocado - but perhaps a touch underseasoned. We devoured it greedily, though, and would have happily asked for seconds.
For the meat, lamb. A very generous dish of braised meat, cooked the exact right shade of pink, roasted baby fennel, artichokes and chanterelle mushrooms, topped with crunchy, sweet pomegranate seeds. It came with the smoothest and butteriest of mashed potatoes that were the perfect accompaniment to the main affair. If I’m honest, I’m not a big fan of lamb and I did struggle to eat my share but my companion (another who’s not entirely sold on the meat) dove straight in and admitted he was a total convert. Points for Apero, indeed. I will say that the veggie accompaniments were just perfect and I’ve taken away a couple of ideas to recreate at home.
At this point, as you may imagine, we were no longer ravenous but who could resist the allure of pudding? Definitely not me. A toffee mousse with a dark chocolate crumb, served with the freshest of rosewater sorbets, and a piece of gold leaf, any initial satiation was completely forgotten, of course, as this was one decadent dessert. Accompanying was an enviously ripe wedge of Fougerus, a cheese from the Brie family, that came with the thinnest of oat biscuits, quince jelly and tart apple slices.
As we sipped our coffees and loosened our metaphorical belts, we thought back on the feast we’d consumed. A wickedly satisfying journey through Europe, the menu at Apero touches on different elements from different countries and combines them with an attractive playfulness. Fresh, seasonal ingredients are Golding’s forte and he’s taken care to show off what he can do with them. We began as naive tourists and left as enlightened experts.

Excellent sharing menu, highly recommended with different wines. Fish and beef cooked to perfection. Great service. Will come again!

We were late for our breakfast ((( Sorry. But Chris and his team looked after us and gave us hot tea and coffee to start with and afterwards served us with one traditional, one amasing vegetarian breakfast and one porridge with fresh berries. It was so tasty that I forgot to take pictures. Thank you Chris!

Had the three course sharing set menu and it was absolutely delicious. Every meal that came out had great flavour bringing out richness of tiramisù against the starting freshness of the grilled peppers. I very much reccomend the steak which was cooked to perfection.
The place has a lovely atmosphere and decor set up which makes for a good environment for a conversation over food. The staff are very attentive to your needs and food comes relatively fast. Overall would definitely reccomend checking it out.

(Translated) After a great night of wildlife photography of the year at the Natural History Museum, this is the next place, this is the place is the underground bar outside to be, without exotic vegan menu and cocktails to wash it . Quite affordable unlike its easy location in La Société de Classe Contemporaine

(Translated) Good Mediterranean food. We shared many light meals. Fast and pleasant service. A little too fast, because sooner had we had our drinks on the table then came the cold dishes, and then the hot.
We never managed to order wine, but the food and atmosphere was so good that it didn't matter.
Food for wood, drinks, dessert, coffee and a glass of red wine eventually came to £ 110
