Excellent food and excellent service. Baked crab appetizer was tasty, grilled shrimp great and the fried cod was amazing too. Best chips and Mediterranean grilled vegetables too. Sticky toffee pudding with custard also delicious.

Had the most fluffy fried cod in my life. It was so light and tasty. Massive size too. It was let down cause the bottom of the fish got soggy. Not sure if this was condensation or the lemony sauce that was over the fish. Chips were also very nice. The dessert was the star. Got the custard and ice cream with the pie. All so good. I'd come again and try another main, but sticking to this dessert. Staff were helpful and attentive. It gets busy so book ahead. Parking is free onsite but very few places. There's single yellow line parking after 6 ish or free Sunday.

The resturant was quite noisy, we sat next to the bar which I wouldn't again as it feels like your sat in on the staff meetings but overall 5* we are looking forward to returning!

A nice dining experience, staff are fairly nice and they adhere to Covid rules very well. We ordered Mediterranean Grilled Prawns which were very nice as well as dressed crab. We didn't like the dressed crab as much as it lacked flavour. The soft drinks that came tasted very watered down and wasn't so nice. The mains were nice we tried the halibut which was delicious as well as skate. Both were cooked and deep fried very well, tasted great especially with chips. We also ordered a cheesecake to share, however it didn't taste fresh. Overall we did enjoy our meal and look forward to revisiting soon.

Came here for dinner with my friend. It was her treat to me for my birthday. The restaurant has a lovely decor and vibe and I did really enjoy my meal but I found the staff to be really disinterested to the point I could tell that they were tired and just wanted to be at home. I do feel for them if they do feel exhausted but it’s a shame that customers have to notice this. My friend has allergies and when talking to the waitress about her allergies I could tell that the waitress just wanted to end the conversation and get away. It’s really hard for someone with allergies to feel accepted in restaurants and to not feel as though they are being a nuisance which they most certainly are not being but my friend just likes to express it to people. I noticed that when my friend asked for no butter on her vege she said perhaps you could put some olive oil on instead. She then said actually if it’s too much don’t worry and the waitress just said ok when what she really should have said is no problem we will Put olive oil on instead. She was nice enough and took a photo for us which I thought was kind but I just felt like I had to comment. We never know what is going on in someone else’s life and perhaps it was just a tough day working on a bank holiday for long hours but I really do not believe that a customer should be made to feel as though that’s their fault or there problem. I have given 3 stars because I would like to return and hope that this was all just a one off. Thank you.

Disappointed with food...nothing was seasoned. Dressed crab was overpowered with cheese.Staff were inattentive and rude. They also refused to take off bill the bread and butter that we did not receive. Sad as was looking forward to this and travelled a fair distance to experience this.

Fancied a change and decided to go for fish instead of the usual Friday night curry. Haven't been here for a while. The food was good and portions very generous. I had skate. Wine was good quality and the service friendly and efficient. Next time I'd probably share a starter .

Great seafood as always with generous portions. I have couple of gripes though. As someone who likes to visit same restaurant as food is good I find that they are being bit lazy with their "Specials" as it seems the Specials are just an extended menu. There is more excitement when going back to see the offers on Special board and its a massive disappointment when you see same items on every visit. My 2nd gripe is when ordering fish and chips surely tartar sauce should come with the food rather then having to request this and when busy it could take time to arrive!

We recently went there for dinner as we are really keen to support small local businesses and had never been. What a lovely place! Absolutely gorgeous sea food all round. Nicely cooked, very freshly sourced and great portions! Great portions! You don’t get seafood in good decent portions. I couldn’t fault anything. Tasty and served warm. Good choices of wine too. The salmon was glorious as with the scallops, prawns and fish pie. It was busy. It’s always busy and I can see why. It’s a great restaurant. Staff were polite but under a lot of pressure so initially not always smiling or friendly but the waitress who served us relaxed a little and came around eventually. We were lucky to get a table with decent social distancing measures and it felt comfortable. However If I sat elsewhere in the restaurant I wouldn’t feel very comfortable. I would suggest they remove a couple of tables to allow for a wider social distance between customers. Tip : don’t be late, you would be lucky if they kept your table. Fortunately we were able to inform them we were running late and we got in. I will certainly be going back there.

Solid, reliable, unfussy cooking of high quality fish which just lets the fish sing. Long time patron thrilled to be returning after 18 months. My son was heartbroken to see that the new menu excluded the amazing sticky toffee pud, but luckily it was on the specials. Was full because it was Father's day Sunday, but sincerely hope that their success continues apace.

Returning customer after lockdown, I can’t believe how much I missed the food in this place. I don’t really like writing reviews but this place definitely deserves attention. We were a table of 5 and our starters and main courses were absolutely delicious. Our fish was cooked to perfection none of us left anything on our plates, it was mouth watering. After our meals we had a few more drinks and left as happy customers. I can definitely rate the Food & Staff 5 stars, it was worth every penny. Keep it up guys!!!

Located in the leafy suburb of South Woodford, is the beautiful looking Ark Fish restaurant. The good portions of Calamari and succulent Cod and perfect chips and of course mushy peas. All well prepared and presented. Friendly Customer service. Reasonable prices.

Revised Oct 2021 Since coming back after the reopening, glad to say the quality has returned and enjoyed our meals once again here. May 2021 As a regular diner at the ark over the years was really looking forward to returning after lockdown. I think they must had lost the chefs. The skates were not very fresh and the fried fish tasteless. Really strange. Prices also went up a lot. I spent near £250 for 6. I do hope they regain their quality and will put this down to a blip. But on this showing they need to do more to keep customers returning after lockdown.

Changed hands recently. Clearly there's a chef who can cook fish well: Battered haddock was crispy and beautifully cooked. Skate was perfect. Chips were a bit pallid and meh. Very nice place generally, but the owners really need to train their people a little better; You just can’t rely on the fact that the food is good, when the staff are really not that interested, they don’t want to be there and wish you weren’t there either; Also, sort out your chips; they should be crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside - maybe try ‘double cooking’ because the last lot we had looked as though they were anaemic;

I have always loved The Ark and couldn't wait to for a meal there again. We booked in for Saturday evening. I initially called as we hit abit of traffic a lady answered the phone and then shouted someones name 3 times before putting me on hold - dont answer the phone and then call a waiter/waitress- Our starters came before our drinks arrived no one asked if we wanted any condiments and the wiatress just put our food down in front of us not asking whos was whos food and gave us each others meals. I cannot fault the food it is always tasty but the service wasnt that good. Lastly sole has been taken off the menu i hope it will come back.

Food and service were really good. However, the place was packed and the staff seemed really stressed. We felt uncomfortable from the off when the woman 'greeted' us with a hard, unsmiling "Name?" - a good evening or even a hi would've been nice! We felt a bit on edge after that and couldn't relax so didn't enjoy it as much as I think we would have. However the meal couldn't be faulted & our waitress was friendly and efficient.

As a regular customer this restaurant is my all time favourite and the quality has always been there. After reading the last two reviews and hearing of a change of ownership I thought I give it visit and was I impressed I fell in love with it all over again. I would like to take my hat off to the new owner he did a superb job with the place, the new refurbishment was outstanding. I arrived at around 7PM and it was extremely busy there were no free tables, so the friendly staff asked me there was about an hour wait and if I wanted to wait at the bar until a table freed up , when I looked up and saw the bar area it was very inviting there was actually seating there. High bar stools in leather and very comfortable, there was plenty of space to enjoy a pint of beer while waiting. The food as before was fresh and delicious, I just can't have enough of it. The quality is still there and I think I can comfortably say that they have improved in all areas, what else can I say I'm in love with the place. While I was having my meal I saw all the customers having a great time and staff was working very hard to serve every customer in the best possible way. The prices have not changed at all it was the same with the previous owner, I wouldn't mind paying a little more because the quality is there and now it's more inviting. From what I saw the new owner has turned the place around to a more popular seafood restaurant. I don't know why the last two reviews I read was that harsh because that Restaurant really don't deserve that, from what I saw the staff and owner was working very hard to please the customers and I think this Restaurant will always be extremely busy and very popular in the coming months. Great Job guys keep it up, ignore the bad reviews you get the odd ones sometimes you are doing a excellent job!

Very good service and some items in the order were good. But some problems: 1. For a fish/seafood restaurant, they got the Mussels dish so so wrong. We ordered 2 portions, and almost a third or more mussels just did not open, and couldn't be pried open either. Anyone who eats mussels knows that those that don't open during cooking are usually dead mussels and should be discarded before serving. To get half a plateful of dead closed mussels was just a put off. My partner and daughter both got major stomach pain and runs at night as they were the only ones in the group to eat them. 2. Prawn chorizo dish: The chorizo were hard as stones and completely tasteless, prawns overcooked. Very disappointing for a £10 starter 3. No social distancing of tables. The place was packed, tables literally next to each other and packed to capacity due to eat out scheme. The fish items were fine, nothing to really rave about but no complaints either. Overall have to say I do not recommend a visit as they messed up important seafood dishes and the place is too crammed up.

I've been coming here for years. The quality of food has been excellent every time. Service very friendly and they do recognise regular clients :) They have done a refurbishment recently and it looks great and very classy. A great improvement and I am happy to say that the standards have not dropped. Food is still great even with a new management. They even take bookings now. A great place if you fancy some fish.

We have been coming here for years and the fish is always fresh and so well cooked but.....3 people, one bottle of wine, two courses each £101 it's pricey but very good. I do think the front windows need double glazing though, if you sit near them it's cold. It's loud and vibrant. I do love this place. I had bits of shell in my dressed crab and I should have sent it back but the waiter was so nice etc I felt I couldn't do that. Don't be put off though the food is excellent. They have a very small car park. You cannot book a table so just turn up and hope for a short wait. Enjoy.

This restaurant has always produced excellent food and drink. We were told that the original owners sold the restaurant to a Turkish family who will continue serving fish meals. The staff are very friendly and helpful and where possible, willing to cater for large groups, however it's best to book in advance.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! I go to this restaurant quite alot with friends and family. Recently this Sea Food restaurant The Ark has progressed. I felt so welcomed as they have built a easy access ramp over that high step at the entrance. The restaurant has been refurbished and it is much more comfortable with the new soft chairs and the up to date decoration. Mainly i like my fish and every Time i go they have a new set of specials (starters,mains,deserts). It is so enjoying to experience new dishes every week. Overall i have to say Great job with the hard work. Thanks guys.

The new owners need to up their game. Waited 25 minutes for a booked table. Waited 45 minutes for food where the fish portions were unusually small and some were only luke warm. The restaurant refurbishment was good and unsurprisingly, the prices seem to have risen to help pay for it, which wouldn’t be a problem if we went away happy. I was disappointed that the owner in attendance did not work the room and talk to customers, some like us who I know were regulars. He still didn’t come over after we very softly explained our disappointing experience with our waitress.

Been here a few times always spot on with the food and usually a lovely atmosphere. Me and my boyfriend decided to eat here tonight for the first time since the refurbishment, we aren't the usual type of customer that visits The Ark. Lets just say we are from an urban background however we've never felt thats dulled our experience here in the past. Upon our arrival we were greeted by a lovely lady at first and shown to our table. We then were served by another waitress and our experience just went down hill from there. For some reason it felt like she just did not like us at all from the moment she came to get our drinks orders, wasn't helpful at all when asked about the wine selection. When asked about the soups available she could've simply told us instead she says look at the menu and when we said we cant seem to find it she said look harder. We ordered our starters and again the constant rolling of her eyes and the way she huffed at the fact we didn't order our mains at the same time we ordered our starters was really making my boyfriend feel like he had done something to this horrible woman. Anyway the food was great as usual no complaints there with some great specials on offer. but the woman serving us was a drag and really ruined the evening. I really don't want to say her name but if you go there its the woman that looks like she has constant baby daddy drama and probably twerks at church on Sunday. When we got some attention from the other two ladies it was lovely and friendly. To conclude the food is amazing we just hope you are lucky enough not to have her serve you. A well establish fish restaurant with an excellent reputation that is well deserved. I have been using this place for some time now and have never been disappointed with anything either myself or my guests have ordered Meal portions are generous particularly the standard "fish and Chips" offering but there is nothing that could even remotely be considered small. One slightly irritating thing is that the restaurant does not take bookings which could mean that there would not be any tables free. Unimportant if you are with friends who can wait for a while but difficult if you are considering taking clients There is a small car park and some on street parking outside. Highly recommended

I got haddock and chips and some calamari to take away. Greeted warmly and shown the take away menu. You absolutely get what you pay for in this place. I've only had fish taste as good as this from one other place and that was in Orkney (in a national chip shop winning place). Lovely people, lovely fish and chips, well presented, even for takeaway. I've eaten in the Ark on many occasions and always had a good experience. Todays visit however was very different. We've not been for a few years since our move away and I was surprised to see the restaurant so empty. In the past its always been very busy. I ordered cod grilled with brown shrimps in butter and new potatoes. The dish looked good when it arrived but the cod was tasteless. My daughters cod was also tasteless and without any prompting from me, she commented on the fact. I tried my wife's haddock,fried in batter and it was much better but not as good as in previous years. I wonder if its changed ownership recently. It really was a superb fish restaurant but todays meal and service were way below par. Lastly the new potatoes were overcooked.....

Great neighbourhood style place. Service very friendly and attentive. Food was lovely and take a lot of care in presentation. Between us we had: - Moules: starter, good portion, creamy sauce was fab, plenty of bread so it doesn't go to waste. - King prawns with chorizo: tasty, chorizo didn't take over. - Mediterranean king prawns: done lovely - Seared scallops: nice, but was expecting seared to mean a bit of crisping / burn on the outside, and the salad it was on didn't really do much for it. - Chips are like the better chip shop chips you get. - White chocolate and fresh strawberry cheesecake lovely way to end the meal. We loved it. Good sized menu, and everything that came out for everyone else looked great too so we absolutely will be back.

Went here on Saturday night last minute. They don't take bookings so its a case of put your name down and wait. It is worth the wait though. We've been more than once. On this occasion we only waited about 10 minutes. There is a bar where you can get a drink while you wait. The food is absolutely delicious. A little pricey maybe but well worth it if you want something a little more special. The staff are friendly and service is good. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will definitely be going again in the future.

Can get very busy and they don't tend to take bookings. There's a small car park by the side of the restaurant or you can park in adjacent streets for free.
