Reviews of Asakusa London
A. K.
The perfect place for a Japanese izakaya experience. Staffs speaking in Japanese, menu with plentiful sake selection, the modern izakaya-like interior design, all were perfect until you get to the food.
They kept elevating your expectations and all of the sudden pushed you off the cliff. What a bummer.
Especially the sushi, plain, cold rice under sashimi that’s barely fresh. Not to mention that supermarket grade wasabi. If I want mediocre sushi I’d go to Waitrose. At least I’ll have the right expectation.
N. Y.
For a second, I though I was back in Japan! Sitting in the sushi bar, watching the chef prepping the dishes, and hearing the staff talking to each other in Japanese. Authentic izakaya experience just some minutes away from Camden Town Station. Food was delicious, menu is really extense, and staff was lovely. Will come back.
Y. T.
Went with a friend for her birthday. Good service staffs always kept their eyes on every table and reacted quickly with request. Liked the taste of udon and sashimi don, skews were nice as well the only down side were the tamagoyaki from the don and chicken skin skew
R. S.
Probably my favourite Asian restaurant in London. Can't go wrong whatever you choose on the menu, we were a group so we got to try a huge portion of it, and I personally was satisfied at each dish. Great atmosphere also and friendly staff. BYOB.
M. G.
I was looking for some good Japanese restaurant in Camden and I found it.
Sashimi is amazing. Sushi is a bit oversized - very generous pieces of rice and fish. :)
All tastes great. Will definitely come back.
K. Y.
5 star on their food and ambience, typical izakaya style. Great spot for all kinds of small plates to larger grilled dishes. Great selection for their highballs as well. Friendly staff and efficient service.
A. R.
Delicious food, wonderful atmosphere and great service make this place absolutely wonderful. Make sure you book, seems very busy.
T. M.
A fantastic place for dinner: really authentic ambience and great food. The sashimi was particularly good, and we also liked the great selection of Japanese drinks.
K. C.
Real Japanese food.
Better make reservations before u go.
Z. S.
Exceptional Japanese food! The sushi are very fresh and full of Unami! Sake tasting flights are good combinations with the great food!
P. C. C.
I only ordered the deep fried octopus and the takoyaki balls to take away, they were very tasty and very well packed. The lady at the counter was really friendly. I peeked the restaurant from the entrance and looks like a traditional Japanese restaurant, I can't wait to go again when the lockdown is finally lifted.

Second time I’ve been to this place and I can’t not give a review anymore. If you come, you MUST try the Nasu Dengaku (deep fried aubergine and miso). This place was recommended by a Japanese friend who was very keen that I tried the food and I am passing down this recommendation. The food is authentic, with quality ingredients and a very good service and atmosphere. The only BUT I’d say about Asakusa is the price, which is steep. Nonetheless the food is worth it.

Loved it, loved it, loved it! Crazy busy and loud, but that's how I like it. Authentic food, the best chicken liver skewers I've tried in along time. Additional pleasure was watchin sushi master preparing food.
U. B.
Great sushi. They've had the same sushi chef since forever. This place is not about the bling, it's about the food and it just feels, casually like restaurants in Japan do. Always busy though so worth booking!

Maybe I was unlucky the day (Thursday 7pm) I went but it took almost 20minutes for our order to be taken and more than an hour for all the items we had ordered to arrive:
One udon soup
One unagi rice
A set of tempura
One set of gyoza
One set of maki sushi
I was disappointed when told that the chicken couldn't be removed from the Asakusa Udon soup I wanted to order and that no veggie or tofu or fish alternative was offered for it.
The food we had was delicious, the atmosphere was great and I felt as if I were back to Japan. The waitresses who helped us were kind and pleasent. I will be happy to return to Asakusa but after experiencing such slow service I will think twice before doing so. Maybe on a weekday lunchtime?
D. R.
Top quality fish and rice. The nigiris were a bit too big but their freshness, excellent fish cut and their great taste made this detail insignificant. Yakitori were excellent too. Really good quality for value and the service was fine. Thanks, we had a great time!
J. B.
One of the best Japanese food I had in London. Fresh and authentic. The staff was a little bit lost - we asked 3 times to get tap water. Overall good, I will come again.
C. B.
Really great sushi and Japanese food. When the bill arrived we were amazed how cheap our meal cost. Will definitely be returning! Only reason for 4 stars and not 5 is because we did have to wait about an hour for the sushi to arrive whereas the pork Katsu came with the starters... but it was worth the wait!
D. T.
We came based on a recommendation from a friend and foolishly did not make a booking and was unfortunately turned down. The restaurant was small and cozy but more importantly- it was filled with Japanese businessmen so we knew we were onto a good thing and immediately made a booking to come back. We were not disappointed and must say this will be my go-to restaurant for authentic Japanese food. The sashimi was excellent- thickly sliced, fresh and melt in your mouth. We got an extra portion of salmon sashimi. The nasu dengaku (grilled eggplant) was flavorful which prompted me to eat an extra serving of rice and the chicken katsu was crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. Prices are extremely affordable for the quality of food and service is top notch!
E. N.
Great selection of dishes. I wanted to try again after a long time because I heard the change of ownership but it was great. Service was great but sad to hear the included service charge doesn’t go to the staff and not sure how the meat/fish is sourced as that wasn’t explained on the menu. Otherwise, definitely recommend.
K. P.
The best sushi we’ve had out of Japan!
Delicious, super fresh fish and perfectly cooked rice. Great service, and overall authentic experience! Must go in London!
A. T.
Authentic Japanese Izakaya, feel like I'm back to Japan. Ordered chicken skewers (yakitori) and they also have chicken skins or hearts, which I didn't expect to find in London! Tempura is really tasty and grilled salted yellow tail is fab too.
Also ordered kaisen don, the sashimi is fresh. Price is a little bit for some items (given the location also) but definitely worth a visit!
R. S.
One of, if not the best Japanese restaurant in London.
Very unassuming from the outside, but once you step in you (pre-COVID!) bustle into as close to a Japanese Izakiya (Japanese pub) as you can get. It was always extremely busy so booking in advanced was standard practice.
The food is great. Authentic Japanese food - if in doubt, consider that they have Hamburg Steak on the menu, which is just the most Japanese you can get!
There is a sushi chef preparing food and you can occasionally sit at the court to watch him.
The menu can be a little intimidating if you are not familiar with Japanese food, but the staff are helpful.
5*
N. H.
The menu is extensive and the service is attentive. Particularly liked the chicken hearts and the yakitori. Ambience is cosy, I like the curtains they have between the tables - you can definitely hear your neighbours but it doesn’t feel intrusive.

Takoyaki
Asakusa Udon
Calpis Soda
Hit the spot in every way. Umami, sweet, and wholesome.
On these cool and blustery evenings, a piping hot broth with layers of flavour and texture delivers an island of warmth and satisfaction, transporting us, however briefly, from some of the drudgery of working life.
Looking forward to my next visit!

Overall nice dining experience, but slightly pricey, service is friendly and it’s an authentic place, would recommend
-Katsu is a bit oily though
-octopus is great, also the unagi don
A. C.
Completely devoid of any palatable decor and without a single ounce of comfort this place typifies my favourite breed of restaurant. There's no need for such grandeur or performance when the food is so simple, honest and exquisitely executed. The menu is a bewildering tome, yielding the odd curve ball for the uninformed but the staples are uncompromisingly good that you'll only end up blaming yourself for exploring too far out of your depth. Came for the pumpkin croquette, left stuffed full of nigiri. Topped off with a chocolate éclair receipt companion, don't tell too many about this fortress else you'll have to share your sashimi with the masses
E. L.
Best Japanese restaurant I've been to in London! Very authentic experience and the food is delicious. The place is always packed, so make sure to make a reservation.
M. L.
Amazing Japanese restaurant! The food takes time to arrive but it's worth it. Everything is made upon order. The brown rice tea was a great surprise I discovered tonight
A. S.
The food quality here is pretty good, loved the unagi don and the chicken teriyaki. Slightly pricey though but I guess that's what you get when you live in Central London 🥲🥲
P. M.
Real japanese food
Hidden gem - you are in for a treat!!!
No frills attached but the food is the best I have come across in London
K. H.
Awesome takeaway! We ordered online from their website. Was ready to collect when I arrived at the restaurant. It was totally delicious! Thank you Asakusa and hope we can come and eat-in soon!
D. K.
We were lucky enough to get a walk-in table for two on a Tuesday night before going to Barbican (though I would definitely reserve a table next time as it’s fully packed when we were there). The dishes we ordered are mixed sushi plate, yasai tempura and tonkotsu bento. The nigiri are slightly bigger than I wanted (making it difficult to eat it in one mouthful) and the sashimi on top could have slightly more oil in it. However, it still feels fresh and awesome!
M.
If you have ever been to Japan and been to an Izakaya this place is the closest thing to that. It is like if you had jumped into the tardis and landed in Japan. Food is delicious and staff is all japanese. Really cool place! Will comeback
S. M.
Quite authentic. Surprisingly busy on Friday. Showing of lack of reasonable Japanese restaraunts in UK this place seems fairly priced and quite unpretentious but seemed to lack some of the more common menu items such as curry-rice. Did not try the sushi but as I was sat at bar was able to see it was well presented.
J. T.
Still one of the best Japanese restaurants in London. Very authentic, very reasonable priced for central London.
S. S.
The best. The absolute best Japanese food in London. Make sure you reserve a week in advance and don't forget to ask for a table upstairs. The tables downstairs almost ruin the experience 😕
E. W.
Really good environment .. Very local japanese food
h. l.
Asakusa has now become a new favourite! Food was delicious, staff friendly. I would definitely recommend!
E. P.
Really great sushi, exceptional quality exceptionally well prepared.
K. N.
Very reasonable price and authentic taste, a bit too crowded and busy but will be back to try more dishes. Cooked foods are better than their sashimi
R. S.
Great authentic Japanese food; my partner and I love coming here. Booking is advisable as it always seems to be full when we go (have seen people turned away). Food is fresh, reasonably priced and very very tasty. A must visit!
Y. L.
Frequently visit this Japanese restaurant because of its Asakusa Udon and desserts (highly recommend these two dishes below)
The location is also easily accessible, which is just 3 min walk from the Mornington Crescent station
S. Q.
They have the very popular Japanese drink Calpis...
Food was ok but the portion was small considering the price
m. l.
Cosy place where you can enjoy great food!
Big menu and daily special mains available during dinner.
Worth to try!
a. s.
It was probably the best mackerel sashimi I have ever had. Great job
F. H.
Absolutely delicious takeaway. Mixed Sashimi platter was fresh and flavourful. Okonomiyaki Stick was hot, delicious and covered with all the trimmings. Pumpkin Croquettes in the bento were freshy, crispy, and portion size was excellent. Delivery time was long (per their deliveroo delivery window), but it was WELL worth the wait.
G. B.
Loved this place! We had scallops, gyoza, sashimi, pumpkin korokke, soba noodles, warm edemame and all were delicious. Our favorite was the nasu dengaku- fried aubergine with miso. Service was flawless (a well-communicated short wait over a beer for a great table). We will be back!
D. Z.
This place has been an absolute lifesaver during lockdown! Delicious, fresh, affordable and authentic Japanese food. Every single dish I’ve ordered thus far has been great - the unagi don, inari, and Asakusa udon have been standouts. They’ve also been great on accommodating special requests and requirements. Happy to support small businesses in these challenging times and can’t wait to come by once lockdown is over!
S. M.
Best sushi I've had in London, lovely atmosphere, good choice of sake
J.
Food was amazing - forgot some food but they sorted quickly
J. W.
Many choices for Japanese foods, but service was a little bit slow.
N. G.
Fantastic food. The Nasu Dengaku (aubergine) was particularly special.
Dishes are quite small so do order more than you think you'll want.
A. I.
I really like this place! I just moved to the area, and I had a very specific request and was upset because I couldn’t find it anywhere. I was having a really bad day, and I just wanted food reminiscent of breakfast like my parents made it.
I searched and searched, but nobody had the combination that I was looking for, and I found Asakusa and realised that they served smaller versions of Okonomiyaki (on a stick), so I called and asked them if they would make me Japanese omelette and rice too, despite not really offering that as a whole, and definitely not in a vegetarian form. They were really kind and patient, and they sent me exactly what I asked for and I’m so grateful! They did everything that I requested despite the specificity of my requirements.
The food is lovely, and I felt really comforted ordering from here. If i could give them a 10/10, I would! The menu is great, and I look forwards to eating here in the future.
Thank you again Asakusa, wishing you all the best!
P. N. C.
Authentic Japanese food. Excellent quality of Sashimi. If you like Japanese food. This is a must visit.
A. R.
Found this gem by accident and the food was astonishing. Really like the authenticity and price list is quite affordable. Will be back for more
U. S.
Probably the best traditional Japanese restaurant in town!
S. W.
One of the best Japanese Restaurant I've ever been to , and the Asakusa Udon is a must.
X. Z.
Authentic and affordable Japanese food in London. Reservation in advance is extremely recommended
A.
A pleasant surprise, recommended by a friend was able to sneak in without a reservation luckily and it was absolutely worth it. Great food!
S. A.
I feel compelled to write a review having just read some fairly moronic posts regarding this restaurant. I’ve been coming here regularly for over 10 years and it’s been consistently great - and last night was actually the best yet. The people complaining about the food getting worse since the new management takeover must have some weird agenda as it’s the SAME chef. That’s worth repeating: the chef has NOT changed. If anything I think the chef has upped his game since my last visit here. The agadashi tofu was amazing and the sashimi as good as it always has been.
The criticism is all very strange - I’ve been to Japan many times and I feel I know what good Japanese food should taste like and, to me, this definitely qualifies. It’s by far the best Japanese I’ve had in London, and the service is good and mainly efficient but really the service is neither here nor there when I think about a restaurant. It’s all about the food: and the food here is really, really good.
My only concern is that the prices have risen far too much. It’s at least twice as expensive as it used to be, which is a real shame. And the price hike does feel a little exploitative, somehow. And although it won’t stop me coming back, I may perhaps I start looking for alternatives when I wouldn’t have needed to before.
T. T. R. L.
Ordered a takeaway from Asakusa. I tried the chicken teriyaki bento set which was good. The chicken teriyaki is well seasoned and the rice is soft enough. However, for the price, I expect the portion to be slighlty bigger.
The miso soup is a little salty and does not taste as good. Moreover, I had to wait around 18-20 mins to get my order ready which is quite slow. I hope they can improve on their service.
P. S.
First went here with a friend in 1999! Shows my age... :) It's been on the "favourite restaurants" list ever since and has consistently been excellent over the decades. Black miso cod isn't always on the menu but is fantastic... The simmered pork belly is my husband's favourite thing. Gyoza amazing, tempura amazing. The sushi and sashimi takes a while on busy nights but is worth the wait. Can't wait to get back there when lockdown is over - we LOVE you Asa Kusa!
M. M.
Top quality food and at a great value. Staff are friendly and can't fault the meal. Will be back!
K.
Lovely little place. Very busy on a Friday night. The plum wine tasted lovely. The food was nice; I'm glad we weren't in a rush as it took a long time for it to come out, especially the sushi sets which came out right at the end 1.5 hours after we ordered. The food didn't even come out all together. The good is lovely as long as you aren't in a rush and are happy to sit around chatting. Great service though!
J. L.
Seating is tight, atmosphere is energetic and the menu is authentic. Having lived in Japan for 6 years I can attest to the menu offering classic favorites such as gyoza and tempura, to more specific dishes such as the several preparations of seaweed and yakatori items such as tongue. Judging by the number of Japanese speaking clientele, the place measures up. Service got a bit scarce when the crowd reached its peak, but over a high level of satisfaction.
L. L.
It was ok but didn't have much flavour. The octopus was bland, the fish cakes were ok. Salmon was a bit better. Didn't have the sushi but it may be better.
I. H.
A truly welcoming oasis from busy London life conveniently located right next to Mornington Crescent station. Service here is heartfelt and impeccable, and the ingredients used are fresh throughout. You might have to wait for your food, but if anything that's a plus considering the relaxing ambience. Prices are definitely on the steep side, but there's a limited lunch menu on Thursdays and Fridays with very good deals. Can get very crowded on weekends. If you go, don't miss their delicious Takoyaki!
N. P.
I love this place. Authentic cuisine and not at the price of an arm and a leg.. The decor is nothing to be admired but my God, who cares when you sever the best scallop nigiris.. Even the chicken wings are simply and cooked to perfection. Pork belly a delight. Decent selection of sake. Service a little warmer than what most find in Asian spots to eat. You will not be rushed out of your seat. Go go go! Oh and you'll have to book first. Yup. Don't forget to order the agedashi tofu starter.. Yum
m. c.
I have eaten once before the change of ownership, and more recently again last Wednesday. I called at 5.30pm on the day and got a table at 8pm. Food (yakitori) was fine and maybe even slightly better than before. The waitress cautioned that sushi would take one hour to prepare, so if that's what you're here for, maybe call in advance? Service was fine. Based on food/service alone I would give 4 stars. However, the reason for my rating is hygiene. We sat in the basement this time round and I could smell the stench of pee from our table. Once the food came the smell was not as strong but it was off-putting for me, just knowing that the smell was there. To conclude, the food here is great! but next time I would call at least a few days in advance so that I don't get a table downstairs.
D. K. T.
The food was great, the dishes are very authentic.
The service could be a bit better though. For example, the waiter forgot about our tea and my ochazuke and I had to remind them that they were missing.
I did not have the chance to try their sushis and sashimis, I was already very satisfied with what I had gotten. I will come back to try other Japanese dishes, and their sushis and sashimis too.
It's a small place so make sure you reserve in advance so you don't have to wait too long to get a table. Overall the experience was very good.
M. T.
I’ve been living just around the corner from this restaurant for far too long before eventually going this evening for my anniversary and WOW, I’ve been missing out. Deliciously fresh sushi, mindblowing yakitori, gyoza... I highly recommend the beef teriyaki set meal, which comes with rice and miso making it great value for money. Really reasonable prices, friendly and attentive service, and did I mention the yakitori? I’m going to be dreaming about the yakitori. I’m not stopping going back until I’ve tried everything on the menu twice.
T. S.
Excellent Japanese food; not huge portions, but they offer a variety of dishes, and it is not too expensive, so it is possible to try several ones. The decor of the restaurant is just decent, with whiteboards hanging on the wall where they write the menu, but don't let you be mislead by the appearance! Best to book a table beforehand, especially on weekends, as it is always packed full.

Amazing authentic Japanese food and Sushi
A. L. S.
Amazing Japanese restaurant! Super polite staff, best Japanese food in London so far. Sushi and sashimi are not cheap, but it's high quality. The hot meals have a good price and are really good. Love the baby squid and shimeji starters!
C. S.
The owners changed but the chef didn't. The only issues I have now is that the service has become slightly less efficient, the prices have gone slightly up and downstairs you can sometimes smell the toilet. I have been going to Asakusa for almost 10years and its hands down the best Japanese restaurant in London.
M. K.
Doesn't get more authentic than this place. From food, over staff right down to the music! It's been a while that I went to an Izakaya in Europe and heard Shonan no Late (a Japanese reggae/hip hop band). And in addition you get incredible value for your money. The food is delicious and the real Japanese sakes, beers and highballs was a great. Just bring time and patience as orders do take some time. But it's all part of the experience. Loved every minute I spend here! Thanks Asakusa, I'll be back!
L. S.
The food is absolutely delicious, with loads of amazing dishes to try (many are small and are a Japanese equivalent to tapas). With some wine/Saki it's usually about £20 per head (cheap!).
It is extremely popular, so getting tables without a booking can be a challenge, even on a Monday night. Service can be pretty slow unfortunately, and the wait for sashimi when it's busy can be extremely long- sometimes up to an hour and a half. If everyone in your table orders from different sections of the menu, expect to get your food at different times.
With such amazing and cheap food, putting up with a bit of a wait and sluggish service isn't a problem for me.
L. J.
Great Japanese Restaurant! Maybe the best in town ❤️
J. G.
First of all, the decor is perfectly old school Japanese right down to the J-pop they play and the clear plastic folder for the menu. It's not flash but feels really comfortable, but who cares about the decor? The food is amazing. Perfect sashimi, every single dish is presented brilliantly and flavoured just right. Crunchy tofu that melts in the middle, tender delicious bits of chicken on the skewers and roasted charred aubergine which was fantastic.
You'll walk away feeling full and at a really decent price too.
A. S.
Lived up to its reputation and then some. Gorgeous, fresh sushi. Also had a divine sticky aubergine starter. Ordered way too much for 2 and had a bottle and a half of wine, bill came to £80 total. Well worth it. Great service too.
S. D.
I understand they’ve changed owners. The new owner seems lovely and attentive.
The chefs are still the same. Food is lovely. Service is acceptable due to them constantly being busy.
I will still choose to eat at Asakusa as it’s a rare authentic gem in London. Sad to see the bad reviews on here recently.
G. M.
Very authentic Japanese restaurant. You have to try it!!!
R. B.
Ill cut to the chase. This is the best casual Japanese restaurant in London. Its a big claim but there is no Londoner who'll disagree. It's authentic. The chef who's worked here for 25 years remains amazing. The sushi is fresh made (obviously). I'd recommend you order that first as it takes a while to make and there's an order queue for it. The hot dishes also all amazing. Recommend getting the scallop sushi. Get the soy sauce aubergine and the tofu starter. The asakusa udon noodle is also recommended.
u. w.
Our absolutely favorite restaurant in London. We were here almost every week for 6 months. Very nice staff and amazing food for an affordable price. Try the rustic cut Wasabi with avocado and the inside-out sushi with eel, and you will be hooked as well! But the aubergine with miso paste or the udon soup are just as great.
S. K.
It is a really nice place in London. Very good food and quickly prepared. Attentive staff who will go the extra mile to make it a great customer service experience for their customers. Many people come back here regularly. No doubt because the food aand selection of drinks are really great.
S. H.
Just the best place for Japanese food that I've been to in London. Modest small surroundings, it does get busy so good idea to book. Try the octopus balls!

Came here for dinner last night after being able to make a reservation a few hours before (they were so busy so don’t think we would’ve got a table without it!). The service was really friendly and the food was delicious. We had chicken yakitori skewer, miso soup, gyoza, def fried aubergine with miso paste, tuna rolls and salmon rolls. With a shared ice cream for dessert and some sake it came to around £40 for two people, which I thought was really reasonable!
J. B.
This is if not the greatest, certainly the most authentic Japanese restaurant in London. Completely Japanese to the very core, with its unconsciously unassuming shabby chic atmosphere, you step into a world quite unlike the Western stereotype with its pristeen assumptions. This is what a normal, quietly competent local restaurant is like in Japan. And the food is, and always will be, the most honestly Japanese you will ever eat. Perhaps I exaggerate, perhaps it's just me, but I am amazed this place exists and proud to live in a city in which it can.
G. B.
Sushi and starter were very good.
Tables are a small and very close to each other.
Beef teriyaki was very tough and we didn't even eat it. They still charged us for it though.
K.
My favourite Japanese food in London. Do not miss this place, and you must reserve.
Ive been returning for 3 years now and go back every couple of months despite having moved away from Camden.
100% worth experiencing!!

Returned to Asakusa Restaurant after being away from London for a few years. As always a great variety on the menu. The quality is top notch as always. Staff is very friendly and helpful. I always have a good memory of this place. I would rate it 10 stars if i could.
Remember to book before you plan to go there and book a week ahead as it gets quite busy!

This place is awesome. Walked in and felt like I was in another country, Japan. The layout, presentation, staff and most of the customers here are Japanese. Talk about authentic, this place is a gem.
Just got out of a concert and needed food badly, found out this place opens late. Walked in at 10.40pm and they still took orders.
Has a wide selection of sushi, sashimi and set meals. Meal sizes are just nice and the prices are decent. High quality meat, tastes lovely Lovely staff, quick service and lovely ambience.
It's a nice place to chill, and have drinks. Enough seats for couples, groups and families. I wouldn't say it's kids friendly cause it feels like a place where adults come in to let go some steam after a long day (maybe it's because I'm here at almost 11pm). Also no space to park a stroller.
I'm going to come back here to chill out lol
N. L.
Really authentic japanese cuisine, relaxed and laid back with some of the best japanese food I've ever had! Including actually being in japan. Servers were happy, helpful and incredibly charming. I recommend this place for everyone. Will be happy to come back!
A. B.
I take my family to this lovely place from time to time! This is my favorite place to have a bite. I go to this spot frequently. The cooking is just great, the staff is polite and the prices are fair. I enjoy eating in this spot over a nice dinner.
B. L.
A pretty boutique family run Japanese restaurant, with excellent quality hot dishes but warm sushi which is not to my taste.
Best tempura udon I've tasted in my life so far (a bold statement I'm happy to stand by).
Need to book in advance in busy hours.
But to avoid sushi if you are not used to eating traditional luke warm sushi. Plus the wait for sushi is exceptionally long (1 hour+ at times).
L. G.
Amazingly cheap prices - some of the lowest I've ever seen in London. Fantastic value for delicious, authentic Japanese food in an intimate setting. Definitely recommend if you like to eat lots!
J. T.
I planned to go here for quite a while due to the good reputation and it certainly didn't disappoint.
The sushi was great - some of the better ones that I've had. Although you do find better quantity to price ratios it is not too expensive and it was very good quality and well balanced. The tempura udon I had was great too and came in good portions. However, I was a bit disappointed to find the tempura in the udon rather than on a plate next to it. This meant that the tempura was soggy and slimy after a few minutes and started to spear through the whole udon.
Our experience was unfortunately a bit spoiled by the slow service. We had to get the attention of the staff after 30 minutes to be able to place our order! The food then took quite a while to arrive. Being sat on the sushi bar we could see that there was quite a long backlog of sushi orders with only one person preparing them. It also took over half an hour and asking three members of staff to get some tap water, which we then received just as we were about to leave.
It was quite busy but we just managed to get two seats so booking is probably best. Overall it was a good experience and would hope that the issues with the service was just an unfortunate one-off.

One of a few places I've been to in London where it's possible to get an authentic taste of Japanese cuisine. Well priced and enough space for even big groups (around 10) if you book in advance.
D. B.
This is an awesome restaurant. Lively and buzzing, filled with Japanese people happy to find good Japanese food in London, all of the dishes we tried were top quality (particularly the takoyaki, which was incredible, but also the beef teriyaki, the gyoza, the Nasu Dengaku and the sashimi).
A. B.
I love Asakusa. It's the most authentic Japanese place I have been to in London. Delicious food and varied menu with plenty to choose from. Definitely a regular. You need to book before eating down there, it's extremely popular.
R. B.
Delicious, authentic Japanese food at a very reasonable price. Don't be fooled by the slightly run-down facade - the interior is immaculate and the service flawless. Their Tori Karaage will likely be the best fried chicken you ever taste. My standard order is a chicken or pork Shogayaki set (inc. miso soup, rice and pickles) and a portion of Tori Karaage - though this is quite a lot of food for one person!
Booking in advance is advised for peak times, but at less typical hours there will probably be a table available, since the exterior helps it stay a "hidden gem".
D. M.
Excellent!!! Rarely I've tried such good sashimi in europe, and udon soup was exquisite as well. Portions were plenty enough.
Was lucky to get there modweek at late hour (10pm) so it was not too busy, fast service, nice and friendly staff, good price.
J. L.
I had really high expectations for this place since a few friends recommended it and overall it was a good place to try but not sure if I would go back.
We went on a Sat and it was packed so good thing we made a reservation. Surprisingly we started with udon noodles and chicken teriyaki, which is so weird because usually you end with that. Then the sushi and sashimi came after a very long wait and by that time we weren't so hungry after the hot food! :( The sushi was mediocre, the sashimi was a lot better but their was something wrong with the tuna as it was a bit stringy. I got the sesame ice cream to end.
The staff were really friendly but you have to wait a while for the food. Not the best date place I have to say but happy I tried it.
A. B.
Asakusa is the best Japanese restaurant in London. Service can take ages but its got an excellent menu and everything is made fresh. Make sure to make reservations before you go and try the seaweed salad - heavenly! I recommend going with a big group of people and have some of their umeshu (plum wine) and enjoy the evening!
D. M.
I have been there twice. Once in the early evening I sat at the sushi bar. The second time it was late in the evening 9pm and I had a table in the main entrance of the restaurant. Both time I had GREAT food and it is very good value for your money for Japanese food in London. The service can get a bit slow at busy times and book in advance if you want a guaranteed table.
K. H.
The foods good and the people are friendly. The service might feel slow if youre not used to izakayas. As is typical of izakayas they have a huge menu. The place is pretty cramped even by london standards. You should probably make reservations since walk ins seem like a wait. Downstairs is pretty much all japanese businessmen and upstairs looks like its for everyone else. The only thing that would make this place better other than space is if they had the call service button on the tables like they do in japan. Otherwise getting the attention of the waiters/tresses can be a challenge but thats moreso if you're in the back rooms.
J. R.
Sashimi salmon was beautifully fatty, wonderful texture and taste. The rice on the maki rolls was rather dense and sticky tho, so they weren't so good. Yakitori was good, spinach with sesame (always) simple and tasty. The karaage was decent. Would be nice to have a little kewpie mayo with that dish, as there often is. It's drumsticks which may surprise you as it did us, but it was moist and flavourful all the same. The pork thing was tasty but a tiny bit more dry than you might expect, but I suspect it would take a lot longer to prepare if it were to be as fresh and juicy as possible, and it was still really delicious. Good selection of drinks available too, sake, shochu, chu-hi, Japanese beers, and so on. Overall everything was good and we'd come back again.
m. z.
I have visited many great Japanese restaurants in London and this one tops my list. Fresh and authentic. Their consistently excellent food keeps me going back.
K. H. L.
A decent Japanese restaurant. Much more better than any Japanese restaurants out there but I wouldn't say it is the best. Sushi Hiro/Atariya in my opinion still the best with a wee bit more in price. Overall it was good having spent £70+ but was let down by one waitress who seems more interested in clearing every items on my table and wanted us out asap. Trust me, we are just enjoying our food all the time and didn't spend much time chatting.
L. S.
Authentic japanese izakaya with late closing (until 11.30pm) so it's great for a very late dinner. On our last visit late at night everything else was closed and we were so relieved that this cute little place was still open! Some might say the decor is old-fashioned or dated for me this is very authentic Japanese and sitting at the basement floor it felt as if I was in a small family-run restaurant in Japan! Hot dishes are delicious but sushi/rolls usually take quite a while to arrive - maybe they only have one chef who can make sushi?
g. o.
Fabulous food and efficient friendly service all at a reasonable price. The addition of the COVID safe layout and additional booths at the back has been done really well. Highly recommended.
B. R.
My Japanese teacher recommended this place to me - it's a great little restaurant. This is the only Japanese place in London I've been to where all the staff are Japanese. Their mackerel nigiri are really good (actually, all the sushi we've tried there has been tasty). My only (minor) criticism is that it gets very crowded most nights so service can be a wee bit slow, though still very friendly and attentive.
M. S.
From the outside and if you don’t know it, it may look a bit anonymous but actually the food is super delicious and authentic. I’ve been here in multiple occasions and every time it was a great experience! I would Definitely recommend the pork belly and the black cod fish. Sometime they also have fresh grated wasabi, the real wasabi .. nothing to do with the grated parsnips and mustard that many chain sell you as wasabi.
陈.
Very friendly staff and I ordered two bento boxes which are excellent. The taste is amazing! I will definitely visit again and try some other dishes!
A. R.
Probably the best sashimi I've eaten in London. Super fresh and velvety cuts, and superior techniques like the scoring of mackerel to express more oil and flavour. Palate cleansers other than ginger are a nice touch. A real-deal Japanese restaurant run by real-deal Japanese.
S.
The best Japanese food we've ever have in England. The price are so reasonable for good quality like this. Love it so much. The problem is we need to book coz it is always full.
D. P.
If you are looking for a delicious and huge selection of Japanese foods, this place is the best spot. Lots of authentic and tasty foods, and really overwhelming in every portion. The sushi and the sashimi are really delicious and flavourful. The décor is perfect and adds to the authenticity of the menus.
G. C.
I often find frustrating what's branded as Japanese in London is actually not. They are more similar to bad Peruvian fusion.
Out of the many Japanese restaurants I have been in London, this is probably the most authentic one I could find since Mitsukoshi shut.
This, however, is not one of those and while the quality and freshness of the seafood may not be the top, it is still better than most Japanese restaurants in London.
H. F.
One of the best (if not the best) Japanese eateries in London! make sure you book in advance as we turned up at 6.02 (2mins after opening) to get a table for 2 and they were fully booked!! Decor is very traditional Japanese cafe and although it has had a refurb in the last year, still looks pretty outdated. The food comes as and when it's ready and all in perfect share size portions. We always overorder and bring it home to have some the following day, Be sure to order the sashimi - it won't dissapoint.
M. G.
The restaurant is very cosy, but ensures you feel like you have been transported to a restaurant in Japan. The food was very delicious and a good price. Recommended! Remember to book first, otherwise you'll never get a table!
S. K.
Japanese food isn't quite my thing, but this seemed a pretty good example of it. Clearly very popular with those familiar with Japan. The saki was delicious, while the food was also pretty good. I can't say I'm an expert and I have no idea what most of it was (a friend ordered in Japanese!) but it was more than decent.
B. R.
Top notch sushi, tempura and appetisers. This is the real Japanese experience, so don't expect girls' nights out picking at individual pieces of fish. Do expect a feast and to over-order because of delectable food and subtle, easy-drinking sake!
T. S.
Excellent authentic Japanese restaurant. Good food and great service Booking is a must as it's full every day of the week. Would get five stars but only for so much of the menu in Japanese only.
d. V. z.
Ate sushi here. Very tasty and fresh. The nigiri pieces are, however, very large and hence too filling - this is a matter of preference, as some such as myself will insist nigiri should be small and bite sized. Further there is only a small selection of sushi dishes - no chirashi for instance. It is also very expensive - £19.60 for an 8 piece nigiri set with 2 pieces of Maki... Staff were lovely btw.
C. B.
Great little sushi place. The nigiri and tempura I had were pretty good. Beer selection is as you'd expect (Asahi) and you absolutely have to book in advance. Only open in the evening.
D. F.
Asakusa. It's been on my main list of places to visit for some time. I took a friend who was over from LA. Now, if you've been to LA you know that they get very good Asian food. Korea, Thai, Vietnamese and of course Japanese (esp raw fish). I took her there knowing that Asakusa was highly rated by locals. I was lucky enough to get a last minute booking very early in the evening. 6pm when it opened to be precise. It looks very lacklustre from outside. Bit old hat you might say. And inside it's no different really. But, and eventhough I have an eye for decor and design, when it comes to eating out, it's all about the food for me. Anything else is a bonus.
I ordered for us, being the OCD person that I am, scanning reviews the night before and knowing what to get. The baked aubergine is sweet and large. Good to share. And best to have with a starch or protein as on it's own it would be too sickly. I had to get prawn tempura. Which was very fresh and light. A winner for me. The Karaage chicken was good, but not the best I've had in London. It was not oily at all. But that's where I was kinda disappointed as it almost looked too healthy. No glistening. It was a big portion of 4 pieces on the bone. But I do prefer my karaage (like Korean Fried Chicken) boneless.
Onto the fish...the black cod is something I read to be a certainty to order and I really liked it. Sweet undertones on the the cod it was good. The horse mackerel was not in, but the server kindly explained there is not much difference! So mackerel nigiri it was. I love mackerel. One of my fav fishes and this was good. The spicy tuna rolls were more coarse than some you might find but this did not detract from the dish. Very good maki rolls.
So all in all it was good. Not great but good. But this was my first visit and I'll be back for another try for sure. And the service was lovely and attentive. They even got me Japanese Mayo for my Karaage chicken when I asked for some. So good work. A solid 7/10.
E.
Delicious and great selection if a little pricy
I. C.
Don't let the large menu scare you. Every item is as authentic as it is in Japan. Not the best decor, but it's the food that you'll be eating, not the walls.
S. B.
Hands down the most Japanese place in London. Gets rammed so book a week in advance for weekends. Brilliant Japanese owners run the place, takes me back to time in Japan. Try the sake flight tasting and the tuna sashimi.
L. W.
Absolutely delicious sashimi! Fairly priced and very friendly staff. They particularly have some dishes which are not everywhere available!
D. O.
I am absolutely in love with Asakusa; definitely my favourite japanese in London at the moment. I've been a few times with friends and we've had most of the set meals, as well as sushi and sashimi - all of them are sinfully gorgeous. Prices are really affordable and shockingly low for the quality of the food. It's styled like an authentic japanese izakaya and has really cute decor. Love it. Only bug bear is that they have no japanese curry rice... whyyyy!
D. K.
One of the best around Euston station. Much better choice than Mai Sushi near KGX. Sushi were extremely fresh and flavoursome. Service was nice. Getting a table without booking is pretty hard.
S. C. T.
They serve great food. Highly recommended with a reservation
C.
A reliable and good value japanese restaurant similar to those I've frequented in Japan. I added the restaurant phone number to my contacts because I ate there so often when living in London.
F. D.
Food is delicious, great atmosphere. They brought us fresh wasabi to go with our Sake !!
J. C. H. W.
Nice and autistic Japanese restaurant but really hard to book! I keep coming back often. The food never disappoints me. Absolutely delicious! Highly recommended.
J. L.
I want to give it 5 stars, definitely the best izakaya I've been to in London - but the service can be painfully slow. I know they are crazy busy all the time but surely you'd just hire a couple more chefs.
A. B.
I love sushi and this is great authentic sushi. The best cuts of Maguro that I have ever had. Delicious! Great service, reservations are a must! Very reasonable prices!
S. D.
Make sure you book well in advance. Decor is bit shabby but it's the best Japanese food in London. Don't do the mains just get the smaller dishes to share. Chicken yakitori, ebi tempura, sashimi, assorted sushi are amazingly good. They let us share the Asukusa Udon with small bowls and that was among the best Udon I've ever had.
P. T. (.
Nothing fancy but it felt like a real Japanese restaurant, which I hadn't yet experienced in London!
Food was good and the price was usually fine apart for some sushis which were surprisingly expensive.
E. J.
Authentic Japanese food with a huge selection and nice izakaya atmosphere :) Staff were lovely too!
R. F.
I just returned from a week in acTokyo and chance would have it that the first restaurant I visit returning to London was a Japanese one near Mornington Cresent called Asakusa.
The food here is great! In any way comparable with the quality food we had in Tokyo.
How could I have missed this brilliant Japanese restaurant only a mile from where I've lived for the past 7 years?
S. K.
Numerous choice of small plates, mains etc. Amazing flavours. Price is pretty decent too. Staff are great and friendly.
Definitely recommend this lovely little place.
J. T.
Not the best Japanese food. The yakatori was ok. The beef shogayaki was meh. The chicken teriyaki was bland. The miso was really good. The service was below average. It was packed though!
L. T.
I truly hope that this restaurant will survive this pandemic and I will definitely visit it again after the lockdown. Very cosy place and tasty food! The price is so cheap!
A. G.
Pretty good with reasonable price.
s.
Lovely, authentic Japanese restaurant. Very friendly staff. I don't think it's the best place for sushi, but all the rest is delicious!
d.
Excellent fresh, thick, juicy sashimi. Very friendly staff. Personally I wish the interior space could be a tad bigger, but others might find this more cozy I guess. A matter of personal preference only. Highly recommend this place.
L. M.
A small quiet treat. Less than 10min away from Euston station a little corner of Japan. Staff is tremendously friendly and efficient. Food is amazing and cheap. A little hidden gem.
G. T.
'interesting' j-pop, lots of Japanese paraphernalia, good food and waitresses that have a hard time pronouncing English words. But all makes for a great dinner, highly recommended!
C. C.
one of the best and oroginal Japanese restaurant in the City. Excellent food, fresh fish. Professional service
M. M.
Went here for a friend's birthday - food is delicious and there is plenty of interesting dishes to try. Pricing is pretty reasonable. I ly reason for 4 not 5 start is the fact it's pretty cramped.
J. L.
The food is authentic and delicious- I would recommend the ox tongue if you dare to try it. However, it's always very busy and you would have to wait for at least a good 30 minutes before you get your food. And definitely call to book beforehand.
L. C.
A very great food! that you can surely enjoy it! This is the place that I will surely return to.The sushi and the sashimi are really delicious and flavourful and good. Price is reasonable.
A. S.
This is one of the greatest Japanese restaurant that I've never tried. It is an authentic Japanese, the staff is very kind the food is excelent and the price pretty cool. Do not miss to try it.
t. a.
Shhhhh! NW1's Best kept secret, authentic Japanese food, great food, good prices. It gets busy and sometimes there can be a bit of a wait for the sushi, but definitely worth it!
A. K.
No complaints; service was amiable and fairly quick, food was good. A little on the pricier side but worth it. Be sure to make a reservation, otherwise go early, because it's quite a popular spot.
A. K.
Just eaten at Asakusa, was really yum sushi and well priced, which was what I was looking for. Decor was a bit tacky but who cares when you get cheap, yum food!
B. Z.
Lovely restaurant serves delicious authentic Japanese food! Sashimi slices are thick and fresh, udon definitely must try!
G. H.
They are open for takeaway... we had some great salmon and tuna sushi tonight. A little more expensive, but worth it!
N.
Authentic Japanese. Service a bit slow but the chef was alone on a Saturday evening so it makes sense.
C.
Posaibly one the beat sushi places in London. Traditional sushi and sashimi made with very fresh fish
M. X.
Best Japanese food in London! I love all the food I ordered that day. Authentic Japanese restaurant!
U. W.
Authentic Japanese food at its best, full up to book ahead to avoid disappointment! Highest quality sushi and the prawn tempura is to die for
C. G.
Best Japanese restaurant in London. Small, a bit dingy and a million miles away from the likes of Nobu but I'd eat here over the posh places any day of the week
K. A.
Nice place, I recommend to visit
N. Y.
Very interesting place. I alway enjoy the food but don't want to take my friends / colleagues there..... already too crowded and the place is not too clean (which is by the way, their style, I think!) There are plenty of similar place around you. So if you can get in then please enjoy, if not..please go elsewhere as you are not missing anything ;0)
S. M.
Very nice, delicious food, really japanase traditional !!!!!
J. B.
Fabulous small Japanese restaurant. You'd miss it. Eclectic mix of characters, friendly service, delicious food.
J. O. C.
This is my favourite restaurant in London. Authentic Japanese chefs and staff, you can't go wrong with anything you order but sushi is to die for.
L. B.
Great quality food, a lot of choice and friendly staff
D. J.
Extremely good food. Talented and professional wait staff. Downstairs facilitates big groups, street level small groups. Would recommend
S. B.
One of the best traditional Japanese in London. Fresh ingredients and skilful cooking in an unpretentious atmosphere (maybe a tad too much but that’s its charm)
L. C.
this place hasn't changed an inch in 10 years. serving mouthwatering sushi, and at rather reasonable prices. don't dare turn up without a reservation...
V. M.
Genuine Japanese restaurant, fresh fish and wide choice. Recommend all the fish selection.
S. W.
I simply love this place!
The food is great especially the salad and grilled fish!
The restaurant is very crowded and requires reservations.
a def recommendation!
S. B.
One of the few remaining authentic Japanese restaurants. Delicious food, good choice of beverages, friendly and polite customer service.
A. A.
Amazing food, amazing ambient, the gohan and the sake is regular but its my new favourite Japanese restaurant in the area.
巫.
It’s still my favourite japanese restaurant, the room for seats is always small, but great food, just need to book a table in advance to avoid waiting.
S. M.
It brought me back the nostalgia of Japan! Authentic dishes, nice staff as well as variety choice of dishes. Reservations mostly required.
W. C.
Great value food, definatly try the asakusa salad. its amazing.
Its takes a bit longer for food if you order raw fish but otherwise service is really fast and the food is good value and taste great. Definatly recommended

This place was recommended to me by my japanese supervisor. Indeed whenever I go here I notice that most of the customers are japanese. If you are looking for authentic japanese food this is the right place.
P. C.
What a delight !!! Not much more to say ...
than ... FAB!!!
A. W. J.
Authentic Japanese food at a cheap price. It can get busy usually, so make a reservation and be prepared to wait.
J.
Underwhelmed to say the least. Sushi very poor albeit not terrible. tempura rather greasy. House wine poor. Not sure where the rave reviews come from
M. H.
Very good food. Very good service. A bit more expensive than your usual Japanese but totally worth it.
E. T.
Amazing Japanese food, but if you can't speak Japanese or don't have a Japanese friend, you will miss on most of the best dishes
T. Z.
Fresh, tasty, good service.

U. B.
Excellent sushi and authentic Japanese atmosphere but always busy so make sure you book!
F.
Food is superb and staff very kind. As it's quite popular in peak times there might be a bit to wait. Nothing a good conversation can't fill.
A. V.
Best traditional Japanese in London.
M. M.
The place is alright, the food is great. The only reason why I couldn't give it five stars is because all of the furnishings are old and it doesn't look impeccable nor deplorable.
M. d. F.
Simply the most Japanese restaurant I have eaten at in London.
Who would suspect such a modest storefront hides such delicious food?
R. H.
The food's really good but ...... had to give 3 stars... came here at 9:30... & it's now almost 11 and we've only gotten an appetizer and a side soup your service is barbarically slow
I. G.

(Translated) For a moment I forgot I was in London, and I returned directly to Japan.
Quality of cuisine and excellent raw material, it is eaten as it is eaten in Japan, in a typical environment of the Rising Sun, and often inhabited by autochthonous people who, talking to each other, can transport you thousands of miles away.
Strictly necessary to book, even with reasonable advance, the place is very small, but it will be worth it!

(Translated) A real Japanese person is handling sashimi and can order in Japanese. The tuna sashimi is delicious.

本当の日本人のひとが刺身さばいていて、日本語で注文できます。マグロの刺身美味いです。

(Translated) Really Japanese restaurant. The sushi is good, the quality of the ingredients as well. Therefore nothing to say about the kitchen. The restaurant is ugly, in the basement the smell of the bathroom is felt in the dining room, the expectations are sometimes unnerving. The restaurant is always full so book better.

Ristorante realmente giapponese.

(Translated) Very good Japanese restaurant very close to Camden. It is of good quality and the proof is that there are always many Japanese eating there. In addition, although typical dishes can be found on the menu, they also include others that the Japanese love and that Westerners ask for less, such as salmon head for example, and so on. Highly recommended
