Reviews of BAO Kings Cross

They were fantastic. We had the private room booked for the lunar festival dinner and despite being late because of a mix up these fantastic poeple kept the restaurant open for us an hour after they would normally close... Who does that these days?! We were frankly moved by how considerate and nice they were to us. That doesn't even get into the fact that the food was authentic, creative and show stopping or that their cocktails are being made by some kind of mixologist genius. We are more than fans - we're loyal customers now. Book this place and you won't regret it

What an incredible place! (Really happy Kim chi restaurant closes early/ otherwise I wouldn’t have discovered this gem of a place!)
Truly hipster- brightly lit with ultra modern decor. Retro music. Great vibe to the restaurant. Upstairs bathroom facilities. A very modern fusion menu with authentic Taiwanese feel. Reasonably priced. Good portioned plates. The serving staff will explain the menu to you in depth if it’s your first visit.
Each dish looked like a work of art. Arriving piping hot and well presented. Quite a novelty to have bubble tea during a dinner meal. Great late night treat.
Staff are super friendly and nice. Thank you for providing me with a lovely dinner and experience.

Went solo on a Tues evening & was surprised to see it packed with a small Q at 830pm.
Lucky to get a seat rather quickly & £23 got me 2 baos & 2 starters. The fried chicken was delish (as taiwanese chicken always is!), scrambled tofu with century egg had surprising texture & umami, & the fish was my favorite bao out of the fish & shrimp.
A tad pricey, but it's BAO so that's expected.
AND to top it all off, Daniel, my server, was incredibly kind & helpful with the menu! I wasn't expecting super attentive service, but he totally made the dining experience!

The staff went above and beyond to make our first experience a memorable one. A special acknowledgement to Daniel at Kings Cross who especially looked after us, as we were celebrating a special occasion. The service is enough to warrant a 2nd visit, but the food was also outstanding - particularly the prawn bao! Thank you!

Staff are lovely there. So helpful and attentive. Chilli rice is ok (try something else instead as it’s not mind blowing). Pancake is amazing and chicken is very tasty (only 4 pieces).
Prawn bao is quite rich (the bun)as shown
Don’t go too hungry as it’s not so cheap.

Hard pass from me. Arrived and was dismissed as having mistook the restaurant for somewhere I could dine. For context, I’m a Black female. I then gave the name on the reservation and the time, and I could see a wave of recognition wash across the waiter’s face. Despicable.
Food: 3/5
We ordered lots of small plates, which were all decent, but nothing spectacular.
Drinks: 4/5
Also ordered cocktails - the sake shot was the best out of the bunch.
Service: 3/5
Aside from the presumptuous server at the door, the rest of the wait staff were super helpful. There was a mini spill at the table which they helped with asap.
Overall: 1/5

Dining in here was overall a great experience. We hadn't booked a table as we only decided to go in after walking past it yet we were able to be seated by the window. (Great for people watching if you're into that) the staff was lovely and their service excellent- we also got a good recommendation on how much food to order for two! The food itself was absolutely incredible. Every bite was heavenly and although this restaurant is a bit pricey it's absolutely worth every penny!

If you want to experience new and refreshing flavors, go to Cafe BAO!
Upon entering the restaurant you feel like you’re on holiday. Everything, from interior to music was so thought through that it felt like I was in Asia on holiday. we experienced refreshing flavors and I think this is what differentiates BAO from other Japanese/Taiwanese food places. The chef who came up with these fusion dishes deserves a frickn’ medal. Dish after dish we were surprised with creative recipes.

Delicious food! The sticky rice steak was sooooo good also the dessert. I was bummed out that the restaurant was empty but fully booked at the same time they gave us the side bar table while literary non of the table were occupied. ( I would have been happy if they told me we give you the table for 1 hour only or 90 minutes because that what it took to get the restaurant full with plenty of space outside. Any I didn’t book in advance because the booking required credit card details which I found it unreasonable for booking for two people at 5:30 on a weekday!

Totally understated, this light and airy space is another great extension of Bao. Go for the aubergine fritters, Taiwanese chicken and any of the baos. The Caesar salad was a great twist on the classic especially with the salted egg. Highly recommend finishing off with the Baoprofiterole!
