Reviews of Behind Restaurant
F. O.
Pros: The room design is unique and chefs will make you feel like a king with a fairly personalized service; flavours are pretty good; lunch menu is quite affordable too. Having said that, some cons you need to consider: 1) lots of downtime between courses, all guests are served at the same time, you can't leave earlier; 2) some dishes are more academic exercises (e.g., oyster with foamy cucumber) than extraordinary ones; 3) chefs will have to finish off their work during the service, so you won't have much chance to discuss the dishes. Besides they always whisper, in a rather noisy environment it's non-sense 4) shared table means you have the opportunity to meet new people but also much less privacy than other starred venues. In conclusion, a fish-based menu seems a challenge to consistently prepare dishes worth the hype. The experience can be rated 4, food and downsides as above push for a 3

Amazing Dinner, outstanding service, My out of town guest was very impressed. Every dish on the menu was carefully designed to match the highest standard and exceeded our taste buds expectations.

Superb. beyond/behind superb meal. Wonderful to watch the chefs prepare the food and serve it so deftly and in a chilled way. Fish and seafood for 2021. Book early and enjoy. Fully worth the price (and get the wine pairing).

East London is spoilt for choice with regards to fantastic eateries and Behind is another welcomed addition to the scene. Fantastic seafood focused tasting menu, and their sardine on toast something out of this world. Cannot fault anything.

Wonderful dining experience. All the dishes tasted amazing. Love the relaxing atmosphere. They have a small team of chefs and staffs, yet they are all very friendly. Great value for money. Highly recommend this restaurant!

Food was absolutely incredible and overall a wonderful experience from Andy and his team. Personal and Intimate setting. A hidden gem in East London, everyone must go. A well deserved Michelin star!

Absolutely loved this place. Every course was amazing which is rare to hit it all and also very reasonably priced. Very seafood heavy but I love seafood and the mash was just ridiculous! Thank you for the best evening!

Great restaurant with charming and passionate chef - great intimate experience, lovely fine dishes and superb service - one of the most lovely restaurants of London (and of East London for sure!)

Perhaps the best meal I’ve ever had.
Loved the intimate horseshoe table setting, the interactions with the staff and explanations of each of the dishes and of course the course the mouth-watering, delicious food.
If you love seafood, this is like going to heaven.

This is truly a worthwhile great experience. Beautifully prepared food finished and served by the chefs themselves. Relaxed contemporary decor with only 20 covers each evening. Lunch is served on some days. The Michelin starred fish based restaurant is owned by Andy Benyon who spreads any credit given to him to his many sous chefs. A wonderful evening which I shall repeat again very soon. If you appreciate good food GO.

Andy Beynon's restaurant is a wonderful space that reflects his passion and drive. There is an 18-cover copper horseshoe counter encircling the kitchen with a couple of rectangular tables almost in the kitchen space itself, all with fantastic views of the meal as it is being prepared. The ceiling is warehouse bare and the music reflects Beynon's personal tastes and is balanced to the course being offered. Beynon is an accomplished chef and a charming host. The chef and his brigade are part of the service at Behind, talking to diners about each dish as it is presented to them.
I have sampled some of Beynon's creations at City and Pollen Street Socials, when he was Jason Atherton's development chef, as well as at Hibiscus where he supported Claude Bosi. He has imagination and flair and it is little surprise that he landed a Michelin star within 21 days of opening his own place.
We enjoyed the 8 course tasting menu as a surprise (i.e. we did not want to know in advance what we would be eating). The whole room gets the same meal, with slight adaptions for dietary requirements. We also asked for the wine pairing. It is clear from the wine list that Beynon values artisan producers and is ethically inclined - there are many organic options from small vineyards across the globe.
The main focus is on seafood, sustainable, best-on-the-day produce that is served with care and a keen attention to detail. The brigade are not trapped at a particular station but move according to their role, as well as coming out of the kitchen to present their creations. On our visit we enjoyed fresh peas, smoked trout and pike garnished with trout roe, served in a paper thin fine pastry shell with pea shoots - a wonderful, textured mouthful; native oyster taco and oyster with cucumber, buttermilk, horseradish and oyster foam; crab pannacotta with white meat and sliced sharp gooseberries from Beynon's mother's allotment - a successful combination that has made more people than just his mother smile; another crab dish with ajo blanco and melon and cucumber balls with a warm crab broth and fine sardine toast; scallops with pickled fennel; wonderous hake, roasted, in a sherry sauce, served with fish croquettes coated in crisp scales and a silky, smoky mash scattered with seeds (the wine pairing to this was sublime - a glorious Spanish Red tasting of smoked Ribena); tender 7 day-hung guinea fowl accompanied by a superb South African granache from Wellington; a potion of rhubarb served in a tall glass with a foam to cleanse the palate; a subtle herb sorbet (basil, tarragon and verbena) served with lemon curd custard - quite sublime with a sharp raspberry and calamari sorbet with white strawberries as a refreshing finisher; a white chocolate and cardamom bomb; and a going home gift of freshly baked brioche pastry to go with coffee next day - a delicious reminder of the night before.
Beynon is a cool Hackney resident running a very cool Hackney venue. That he finds time to be a loving father and husband on top of steering his culinary dream is amazing. He recruited one of his brigade when the pair of them were taking their kids out for a stroll and recognised each other and got talking. Great to live and work locally at such a fantastic restaurant. Thank you for wonderful evening.

What an amazing experience. Came here for a friends birthday and we both absolutely loved every minute of our lunch. The menu is very seafood heavy - something she loves but whilst I enjoy, I don’t love. So imagine myA surprise when I loved nearly every single dish. Only one didn’t quite hit the spot and that was the dessert (the berry disc - and more because of the texture than anything)
The restaurant is run by a very small team - the head chef is very hands on and you can enjoy them create every dish. Was an amazing experience
Also their homemade bread rolls are to die for. Omg.
Would recommend highly - great food, great vibe and very reasonably priced

Everything about Behind was perfect. The intimate horseshoe table setting with full view of the kitchen and prep. The attentive and friendly staff, and most importantly the incredible food! Every course was absolutely delicious - which is unusual, there’s normally one I’m not so keen on but every of the 10 were delicious! Very seafood focused which is partly why we went (I’m pescatarian) and everything is locally sourced which we loved.
They only have one seating per evening and so you aren’t rushed and it felt like a very relaxed experience. Very reasonably priced as well. Would highly recommend, we will definitely be back!

1 Michelin star spot with a great sweeping wooden table top counter dining that seated 14 around it. Very close to brat at climpsons arch in London fields. Firstly the staff were all fantastic - the chefs served all the dishes and were really approachable and great to chat about the food and menu with. The sommelier was also particularly friendly and knowledgeable and just a lovely person. Really nice to see Andy Beynon himself taking time to chat with all the diners in the restaurant and clearly took pride in his food and the restaurant.
In terms of the food itself, it’s a surprise seafood focussed tasting menu (you get the menu at the end as a takeaway), with c.14 courses which means each is relatively small and ultimately very “fine dining” if you know what I mean, but not necessarily in a good way. Whilst everything was cooked well with ok flavours, it’s hard to classify many of the dishes as truly standout that you are going to be yearning for over the next few days/weeks/months or raving about to friends and family. It was all technically proficient cooking for sure but would love to see some more innovative ideas on the plate and more knockout flavours. Crab, hake, and guinea fowl dishes were the highlights for us. Total bill c.£208 for two with a couple of drinks each. Overall 13/20

This was by far the most enjoyable dining experience I had in a long time. I loved the open kitchen where you see the chefs preparing the food.
The food and the wine pairing were amazing, every dish was well thought through. I loved the fact they didn't waste any of the guineafowl.
I can't wait to go there again.
P. P.
Pretty amazing place, seafood orientated tasting menu with really fresh different flavours… favourite was cod with mussel that is super strong, guinea fowl with mash and coated with guinea fowl skin … really worth trying !
M. E.
Truly outstanding. Course after course all delivered by the chefs themselves (along with an excellent sommelier).
Great environment and wonderful food.

My overall grade for Behind is: A+
While watching the Michelin stars for Europe being announced, I quickly made reservations at Behind for our upcoming trip to London. So glad we were able to secure a seating.
The restaurant seats everyone in a large circular "bar" type of area. Where everyone can see the chefs do their magic.
The offering is a large menu that mostly spans seafood. Each course was absolutely perfect and quite inventive with a very nice variety. There was one meat dish, but for the most part, seafood was in the spotlight.
I had the wine parings and the only thing I might consider changing is pouring slightly smaller wine pours and changing them more often as that has been what I've experienced most with tasting menus.
I will come back and update this review from my notes of all the courses, but for now, suffice it to say, that this is a real gem.
It is a bit out of the way from Central London, but worth the trip.
If you are adventurous and are ok not knowing exactly everything that you're about to be served, you will love Behind.

Lovely space and atmosphere. Enjoyed the seating arrangement where you can watch the chat with the chefs. Enjoyed the fish based concept and the wine pairing was amazing.

Wonderful dining experience in a relaxed atmosphere. All dishes tasted amazing by a friendly team of chefs and staff.
A. W.
Can’t fault it! Amazing seafood-based tasting menu with combination of great flavours. Modern open plan set-up but feel very cosy. Chefs introduced each dish to us when serving and it was a very enjoyable and personal dining experience.

Une explosion de saveurs. The food was astonishing and the staff fantastic. Not only are the food and wine of the highest standards but the chef and staff have created a warm and welcoming atmosphere. This restaurant definitely deserves another Michelin star :)
M. B.
Incredible! Best Michelin star experience have had in London (and paris…!), so original and intimate. The chefs really spend the time to talk to you about all the food and the wine so feel they are invested. Definitely booking again soon!
P.
Amazing experience, one of the friendliest welcomes I have had at a restaurant, all the chefs were so friendly and gave amazing descriptions of each dish. Each dish was a delight, familiar flavours with new combinations dancing around the mouth. The applejack foam was insane. The wine selection was top notch and the atmosphere, music and vibe surpassed my expectation. Massively recommend, cannot wait to return.
J. K.
Beautiful food and experience being served directly by the chefs. The passion and creativity shone through in every aspect of the meal. It feels like an incredible privilege to have this restaurant so local, and so reasonably priced. Thank you ♥️
B. S.
Delightful food and interesting wine pairing!
A. C.
Fabulous dining experience! Love the concept of basically everyone sitting at the chef’s table. The interaction with the chefs makes it feel like a supper club. Everyone‘s super friendly, professional and passionate about the food they’re serving. And they should be. The food is excellent!
S. L.
Fantastic restaurant with an amazing tasting menu and tasty wine pairing option. It is a great combination of a down-to-earth Hackney style and up market dining.
P.
Almost reluctant to leave a review as the surprise of finding this secret place is part of the experience! Most amazing food in friendly intimate surroundings, welcoming team of chef's who deliver their expertly prepared dishes and share their knowledge enthusiastically with every course. Superb wine and a really faultless evening ending with the most delicious white chocolate dessert with background music 'fools gold' - every detail was perfect.
In response to previous reviews we did have to reduce the size of our party due to some people isolating at home and we called in advance to explain, the situation was handled graciously and caused no problem at all.
This is not eating out, this is an evening of delightful new experiences.
G. C.
Recently added to the Michelin * list, Behind doesn’t disappoint. The tasting menu is well balanced, with clever product associations, and the wine pairing perfectly accompanies the cuisine.
While the location of the restaurant in itself isn’t particularly thrilling (sort of tucked away on the lower ground of a newly built building), the inside space is pleasant and the open kitchen and bar service definitely adds to the experience.
J.
Great chef’s table experience, delicious food and attentive service.
A. Z.
Fantastic culinary experience, with each course building onto of the previous.
Beautiful array of flavors presented in an innovative and almost experimental manner. All complemeted by fantastic hospitality.
Can't wait to return for the 8 course dinner tasting menu.
P. G.
Absolutely delightful. The food was perfect - packed a punch and each dish was well thought out and unique. The environment felt inviting and the people running it really nice.
Honestly, I don't know if it's the lockdown effect but I wish there were more places like this one and would recommend it to anyone looking for what British cuisine could be.
I've only left a handful of reviews on Google and this restaurant was so incredible that I felt obliged to share the love.
G. O.
Probably the best eating experience I have had to date. My tongue was spoilt with the different flavours. It was very nice to have the chefs come round and tell you what was in each dish, and being able to taste exactly that was great!
Thank you Andy and Co, it was an absolute pleasure!
J. H.
Incredible experience and best dinner we’ve had in London in years! Loved the open seating design that was intimate and not overcrowded. Tasting menu had surprise after surprise coupled up with a generous wine pairing. We will definitely recommend to others, and will definitely be back as it’s in our neighbourhood!

Went there for my 40th. Difficult to put in words. Totally blown away. Food was extremely good, the wine pairing was sublime, the chef and his team really looked after us, with the chef walking around pouring wine himself, talking about the wine and produce…the whole experience was exceptional. The layout of the seating area is very cool, and to be able to sit literally close to the chef’s cooking and plating and watch them in action was amazing. One of the best dining experiences for us, in London and anywhere! I now understand how this place got its first Michelin star within 20 days of opening 🤪I thank my wife for finding this absolute gem. Will definitely be returning very soon !!
A. T.
Outstanding dinner, with creative (but not overly extravagant) flavours. Starters highlight the freshness of produce, while the mains demonstrate technical expertise with excellent understanding of balance.
Also, what an experience with the head chef being the maitre'd and the sommelier.
M. G.
Incredible food, but I booked this place based on the Michelin star and the beautiful setting when a long circular table for all the guests to be seated around. This expectation was shattered when the maitre d joked we didn't have to walk far too get to our table. We were seated away from all the other guests, at a low table on the side. I think the other guests had a far better experience.
J. B.
Probably the best value 8 course menu you’ll ever eat. Absolutely banging wine pairings and wonderful service. Can’t wait to go again!
A. C.
Loved the informal, open design with the kitchen and the chefs being an integral part of the experience. The food was exceptional. Every single plate was a joy. The vibe is chilled and the pace of service was perfect. There are plans for a wine bar with small plates - I hope this happens as it would be a great addition.
R. G.
Delicious, beautifully presented food in an very attractively designed space. The staff were a delight and it's difficult to argue with that table. I'll definitely be back.
L. R.
Awesome experience, great tasting food
J. S.
Amazing, unique food and tremendous service in what felt like a private dining experience. The creativity and flavour combinations were simply incredible. Without doubt one of the best restaurants in London.
S. R.
Got the take away menu with my partner today and it was sublime! Easy, no-fuss experience, but at the same time out of the ordinary. Will be talking about the gnocci, fish pie and the almond tart for a long time! (Amazing wine pairings too.)
C. L.
One of the best dining experiences in London. Andy and his team have created an amazing setting with gorgeous food and incredible wine. Can’t recommend enough.
C. K.
Wonderful experience. Seafood focused menu was sublime; service attentive, knowledgeable, friendly and unstuffy. Brilliant soundtrack. Can’t wait to go back!
T. M.
Very good. Interesting menu and wine list. Delicate (and tasty) cooking and fun and unpretentious chefs table. Room and decor are a bit odd for the location - quite corporate, in ground floor of an apartment block. But highly recommend the food and experience.
J. B.
What a great place. We were greeted by the chef at the door which was a nice treat and seated in the round facing the kitchen. Brilliant personal service throughout inc from the owner / chef. He’s clearly put lots of thought, heart and graft into this place. Menu was diverse, super tasty and warming - just as well as it’s wet and cold out! They don’t waste anything here and we had a delicious and unusual snack made of fish tail! Wines were a great: an original capsule collection that seemed really well curated. Sommelier was friendly, knowledgable and passionate. Some of our party had an issue getting here and so were late but the staff were entirely unperturbed and took it in their stride and ensured we were well looked after. It was a brilliant show throughout and I highly recommend. We’ll be back soon.

I went to Behind with my husband and we were pleasantly surprised about how good this restaurant is. We live in the same building so having a restaurant that good just downstairs is priceless! The food is extraordinary, the flavours are elegant and to be honest, we couldn’t fault it. The wine is excellent too and the best thing is that they sell wine to take away too so we have gone there to buy couple of bottles this weekend as we run out! So handy ;)
J. H.
Wow! Just wow. This is incredible food and theatre combined. The food is ridiculously good and like nothing else in East London, but what makes it even more special is being in the privileged position of watching the kitchen and the chefs at work. Chef Andy is breaking down that barrier between the kitchen and the table and it is brilliant! Go, everyone go!
B. T.
Wonderful inspired cuisine. A real joy to be looked after so well. Thank you for a wonderful evening.
A. V.
Simply amazing. Phenomenal food, beautiful setting, wonderful atmosphere and just the friendliest, most professional restaurant staff. Couldn’t recommend this enough - an all round perfect culinary experience. If you’re considering booking, don’t wait, just book, you won’t regret it.

My wife and I went to Behind on Saturday night and had one of the best meals that we have ever had. The food (a taster menu focused on fish) was fantastic (innovative and interesting), the wine excellent (sommelier made some great choices), the set up different (a 3/4 moon seating area) the team friendly and the overall feeling was of really special dining in an unpretentious atmosphere. Great to watch them at work and really feel for them in this Covid pandemic as they have only recently opened but it was so good that we will back post 2nd lockdown. Sincere kudos to Andy and the whole team.
J. C.
Terrific evening at this wonderful restaurant. Concept was delightful, authentic and unpretentious. Food was divine - really innovative and flavoursome. And the service from Andy and the rest of the crew was lovely. Wishing them every success.
