Reviews of Homies On Donkeys
A. B.
A small little 'hole in the wall' that serves up the best Tacos in London. If you've ever been to Mexico then you know this place is legit!! All my Mexican friends can also confirm. I love that they have specials every week, and sometimes in the week too. Their usual menu is limited and done well, my favourite are the shrimp tacos. Very generous portions and very filling. Love this place!!
S. E.
Great style and vibe. Personally I wasn't that keen on the Soy Al pastor (the only vegetarian option if you want tacos) - it reminded me of pasta sauce.
The place can get busy; I waited for 20 minutes before I got my order.
S. S.
They don't skimp out on spices, chillis or oil so the tacos are served proper street food style. If you like your food as flavour bombs, Homies on Donkeys is for you. Very reasonable prices too.
Get a cocktail from Homies on Drinkies that's bang opposite, they usually have fun watermelon or other margaritas.
V. G.
Hands down the best place in London for tacos. Smokey is a legend, a scientist, a culinary genius. Now they have beer I’m there every week. Highly recommend the shrimp and the soy. The octopus special is amazing too 🥰🥰🥰
H. L.
Very cool little spot but tacos didn't live up to the hype. Festive turkey taco was nice but not knockout. The classic pork and chicken tacos are fairly indistinguishable from each other and are actually too big / overfilled, which caused both tacos to tear when picking up (also due to moisture, maybe double layer them). The meat was very tasty but overly shredded so the texture is a bit mushy. That said good value given the size of the tacos.
A. T.
I don't like spicy food. The tacos were extremely spicy for my paladar, but they were so good. Tears were falling through my face because of the spicy stuff, but couldn't stop eating because they were so damn good. I was so confused, the whole situation was very emotional. Definitely 5/5, and the people working there were amazing. Probably the best tacos I had. But also the most spicy food I've eaten. I don't understand what's going on.
K. H.
Tasty tacos. They were full of flavour. The shop is within the market, there's two entrances/exits.
S. C.
Amazing amazing amazing! Tacos will never taste the same again to me haha! I now know the real deal, these were seriously delicious, as well as the tortilla chips. Highly recommend
H. M.
Traveled over from west London just to try out this place hearing that this is the place for authentic Mexican food in London. It did not disappoint. Real corn tortillas, great flavours. 100% worth the hour journey. Already plotting to get back to Walthamstow to get my next fix from these homies.
I. P.
These tacos were simply delicious 😋 I enjoyed them too much specially the spicy sauce and the chili prawn. 100% recommended!
C. O.
As usual, the Homies provide the best tacos this side of the Atlantic. Prawn, Baja fish and soy al pastor. Magnificent!
D. H.
Awesome concept tucked away off woods street in the in stores market....serving next level beats Mexican food. Who would ever have thunk it! Yummy grub!
S. J.
Without a shadow of a doubt the best tacos in the Upper Walthamstow area. You'd have to travel beyond Vallentin Road to find a finer, more authentic taqueria. I'll be back (soon).
F.
Tiny place with a short menu. But what they have is so good! Cochinita pibil special was the standout.
J. A.
Good food is hard to find in the local area and I must say I think I have found one of the best food in the wood street market area, found this place recently and I must say its restaurant quality food as low prices. Tacos are made fresh right infront of you and in a steady time, everything taste fresh and nothing taste store bought. Nachos are really simple but good and worth every penny, it's only one guy there and if it gets busy trust me just wait it is worth it and prices its reasonable. Honestly it's a you will not regret visiting this place.
P.s. he does take care and cash and also have seating to eat.
F.
Had short rib special. Was busy at opening. There's also a seating area out the back of the shops to busy. I'll go again. Service is with a smile.
R. C.
Very good tacos wish the chilli sauce and taco toppings were on the side like a traditional taqueria as some people can't eat spicy food. I enjoyed it but my partner is not able to eat spicy chilli due to medical reasons.
S. A.
The best tacos and nachos I've EVER HAD. Affordable but you get what you pay for "ITS WORTH IT YUMMYYY" I will be back to eat regularly 10/10
H. H.
Food is great, fresh, and full of flavour. Meat is so tender, shrimp cooked perfectly, and the tacos are noticeably of great quality. I go here as much as I can. Totally worth the money.
K. E.
Lovely service and delicious fresh ingredients and tasty tacos
S. W.
Taste explosion of delicious tacos. They have mulled wine now too which is very good. Friendly staff, highly recommended 🌮

Great taco place, and really good value for money. I took advantage of the current offer; 2 tacos for a fiver. I went for the prawn one which was filled to the brim. This is a hidden gem located in an indoor market, there are 2 entrances, you can either enter via the wood street market (located by the bus stop and next to forest tandoori) which is further down 98 wood street, or look for number 98 wood street which looks like a antique place and walk in using this entrance round to the other side, it's not visible from the main road and can be easily missed. The place itself has seating for 4 people inside but has seating outside for another 4, it's counter seating with stools, the chef cooks everything in front of you.
The owner is a lovely gentlemen who is friendly and knows how to make a mean taco, plenty of salsa and chilli sauces available on the counter to add as you please. If your looking for a quick fix then this is your place, they don't do takeaway so be prepared to get taco hands!
L. R.
A hidden gem in the Wood Street Market. Quality is fantastic, price is more than fair, and the staff is wonderful. Do yourself a favor and come with a friend so you can split tacos and try one of each!
J. K.
Awesome tacos - stopped for a quick snack but can't wait to go back for more. Expertly seasoned fillings which don't skimp on portion sizes.
S. H.
The best Tacos in London. Honestly, check it out!
My favourite place to eat, cute little place that reminds me of a Japanese counter service restaurant.
Smokey is a legend and always good to chat to and super accommodating.
S. C.
two days ago was our first time in this magnificent restaurant. But It is obviously not the last time. We enjoyed the evening very much with the efficient service, with the first-rate cooking and booze and with the comfortable payment. We will absolutely return there in a short time.
K. M.
Amazing bold and fresh flavours prawns cooked and seasoned perfectly, chicken and pork beautifully cooked and the hot salsa just right and the pico was great also it's terrific value for money awesome tunes well return again and again
D. L.
I had the Soy Al Pastor tacos, and found myself thinking about how many Mexican joints there are in the UK now, and how few of them serve truly authentic Mexican food. Then I found myself thinking: 'hang on a minute, you've never actually been to Mexico...' For twenty minutes on a Saturday morning, in the corridor of an old antiques market in Walthamstow, I briefly believed that I had.
A. D.
This place is a good bit of street food, good portions and taste.
I'll be coming back to this one
f. c.
Such delicious food, with authentic flavours and a wide range of ingredients. Veggie, vegan and gluten free options make it an ideal place to eat if you have a mixed group, and the service is always great with Smokey doing an amazing job of spinning plates! I highly recommended this place.
K.
Took my better half on her birthday and it was absolutely incredible. Love the attention to detail on each taco!!! You must go!!!!!
M. R.
Finally made it today for the first time to try these tacos. I have eaten many tacos in my life but these are definitely one of the best. Absolutely delicious. The owner is super friendly and portions we’re generous. Can’t wait to go back and eat these again soon. Thank you so much!
J. A.
Big up HomiesOnDonkeys for the best Tacos in London!!😎🙌 I travelled 2hours to eat here and really worth it. Keep up the good work 👏
W. T.
Best Tacos in London hands down! Small but perfectly formed local spot 👌🏻 The pork taco was insane
J. G.
Food absolutely out of this world, as a mexican living in the uk this place is by far the best taco place in london
D. O.
Glad I live 15 mins walk away otherwise I wouldn't eat anywhere else. Amazing food, very friendly staff
C. T.
Best Tacos in London, if not this side of the Yucatan
P. H.
Amazing little stall run by a mexican American. Truly authentic tacos with a variety of fillings. The sort of inexpensive st food that I've only ever tasted in Mexico. Be nice if he took this concept out of the stinky market and made a proper resteraunt out of it. But then, it would porbably lose some of the chalm!
C. B.
Bowled over by how good these are. Ate them so quickly I don't have any photos!
Gluten free tacos also an option.
I tried the prawn - huge, juicy, v generous amount of delicious prawn - and the soy, which was genuinely exceptional. Staff are lovely too, and everything cooked fresh to order. Get takeaway to eat in Epping Forest. Ill be back!!
J. M.
Best tacos I've had in London.
Update: After a couple of years, I can safely say these are the best tacos I've had outside of Mexico.
I. S.
Best tortilla chips ever! Plus the chicken tacos were amazing!
C. R.
Seriously the best tacos I've had in London!!! A must go. Tiny little place great for takeaway or a quick bite.
E. P.
Beautiful shop close to the wood street market. A must stop if you are around Wood Street.
L. G.
This is the best Mexican place outside of Mexico! The food is incredible, I treat myself most Friday lunchtimes.Thoroughly recommend it
R. H.
Staggeringly good. The best tacos I've ever had, for really reasonable prices. The shrimp tacos are excellent, but the pork is just sublime.
They do just tacos on weekdays, and tacos plus specials on weekends. It's small so it can be tricky to get in at the weekends - they let you order and then come back later when its ready. If you're free on a weekday then it's well worth dropping in while it's sleepy since the guys who work there are super chill.
S. S.
Very friendly owner, lovely community in the market. Friendly cat and amazing tacos!
M. C.
Excellent tasting Mexican style food . Awesome flavours.
Regards
Aussie Mick
B.
Amazing!!! Best tacos place in London with a great owner, service is top and love the area! I'll come back for sure💯👌👍👊
L. &. T. I.
Hidden gem! The only fault we could find was that they don’t sell alcohol. The tacos are incredible. The owner is super friendly too. Worth pointing out it’s a very small place with limited seating, more of a quick eat then sit down meal.
t.
My husband and I are obsessed with pork tacos!! Melt it in my mouth! I'll try prawn one for next time :)
H. G.
The food is delicious and consistent. It's very difficult to find genuine Mexican food in London. Smokey's menu is small but contains everything you need and there are often specials at the weekend e.g. Tuna, salmon, octopus. Lovely people who always make you feel welcome. The UK doesn't have a large Mexican community and I've never been to Mexico, nor anywhere else in Latin America. So my benchmark is New York and my old Californian flatmate.
E. W.
Wow. I have been here before a while ago and was massively impressed... today is the first time we have been back since lockdown and by god that was some of the tastiest food I have had...ever...the prawns were succulent, the pork rich, the coriander, the red onion, the guac so fresh. It's like three hours since I ate it and I came on here to write this now.
E. B.
The best tacos I've had in London. Probably the best I've had full stop. Really reasonable for deliciously fresh food. The refried beans were astonishingly tasty. I'm still craving them
A. M.
Lovely staff and the nachos and corn tacos were great, but thought the fillings were a bit samey, they were all in a heavy spiced tomato based sauce... the prawn one tasted more Indian than Mexican! 😕
L. P. T.
Epic salsa. Ask for shrimp taco if available. It's delicious. They had a mushroom vegetarian taco once and it was divine! It can seat at most 5 pax so best go off peak or wait. it's worth it!
B. D.
The prior reviews say it all...what more can I add? I actually visited the market to check out Fabulist Costume which is directly across from this place (great shop see separate review) .....had never heard of this taco stand but it was recommended by the costume shop manager. Delish, fresh and flavourful, i enjoyed the big and juicy shrimp tacos, with a hefty side of nachos. For less than £10 I was well satisfied.
A.
This place is great. By far the best tacos I’ve had outside of northern California. It’s counter service with 5 seats and takeout. I arived at 1pm ish, there was a seat left. This is a small, chilled and intimate spot serving that hard to find authentic taco. Superb.
S. M.
Tiny hole in the wall tacos place, run by a super-laidback and lovely guy. But it's the tacos - best tacos I've ever eaten, including in Mexico. I can only vouch for the veggies, but all the people I see eating the meat ones seem very happy too!
N. D.
What a gem (apologies for the overused foodie figure of speech). Smokey (the proprietor) is the man. Exactly what a taco joint should be like - food is fresh; it’s casual (you sit on a stool and eat at the bar); get to watch the kitchen create; cool decor; authentic feel; good tunes. Small but very tasty menu, and great value. My only wish is that there are more genuine taco places like this across London and the U.K.
Highly recommended.
P. T.
These are real deal tacos. One of the best taco places in London. If you live in walthamstow this should be a regular. If you live outside walthamstow, this should place shoukd be a reason to visit regularly.
N. L.
These are easily the best taco's I've had in London. A real gem of a place and just around the corner from me. If you haven't tried them yet, you're missing out!
J. S.
Tucked into a slim spot into the Indoor Market, this joint provides ton of Mexican flavour in its tacos. I got the camarones enchilados and was impressed with the blue corn tortilla, the amount of camarones included in the taco and the generous toppings. I also liked the spice mix used to coat the camarones- not too spicy just bursting with goodness. The tortilla is also not too flabby on its own. I thought the camarones could have been cooked a bit longer to make them more tender but that’s a slight point. Anyway enjoyed my time there as well the decorations with Mexican frontera slang. A good ride of nostalgia for this former Rio Grande Valle resident.
C. G.
Awesome tacos - truly the best I have had in London! Great atmosphere and great people running the place. Be sure to ask about their Saturday specials, the two I have sampled were great
P. M.
It's the best taco place in Walthamstow right now. Go for the shrimp tacos and the chips and guacamole. The owner is super friendly and knows his hip hop.
I. P.
Best tacos in London ❤️🌮 you won’t be disappointed you went, the only dangerous thing is you will become addicted. And Smokey the owner is a lovely guy who’s always welcoming.
N. S.
Pork and chicken Tacos are amazing, full of flavour and nice spice. If you have not been here you are missing out. Highly recommend #Besttacosever
D. M.
This place is really fun. You'll end up sitting next to all sorts, having a pleasant conversation and lovely food. That's if you can get a seat! Apparently 1 until 2 pm gets very busy.
C. F.
Great food, very affordable. Limited seating but it’s a small setup. Staff very friendly and welcoming.
H. K.
Best tacos in London and amazing customer service.
R. B.
Delicious and really good portions for the money. Some of the best tacos I've had!
Z. G.
Tacos were delicious. Had to wait around 15m. There is a maybe space to eat for 5-6 people and it's max and literaly any space left.
B. H.
Absolutely delicious tacos and the Saturday specials are a proper treat... very lucky to have this gem local but would be worth a trip if it wasn't
A. K.
BEST tacos in London. One of the best places I’ve ever eaten in my life!! I get the roast vegetable tacos and the nachos with guac, pico, and refried beans. AMAZING!
O.
Great spot, very fresh, very tasty, authentic tacos. The prawn was especially great. Defo give it a shot.
C. H.
Super yummy and authentic tacos! Got the blue corn and all the flavour...go, go, go. Haven’t had tacos this good outside of Mexico 🌮
C. M.
This place is it-the food is delicious, fresh and not expensive-the vibe is awesome and the guys running are sound. Can't recommend enough!
E. Y.
The Tacos were very tasty and reasonably priced. They were very popular and there was a queue forming outside. It was surprisingly spacious inside.

R. L.
Incredible tacos, prepared by friendly staff. A nice little treat, hidden away in the market. Worth seeking out
M. D.
Really good tacos and at great value for money. It's a small place so I'd bet it gets busy at the weekend, but I'd gladly queue.
S. S.
Fun place, very good food. I am sure they are aware of their timing and searing issues. This cook deserves a bigger audience!!
J. P.
