We chose the YoKOYA for a birthday dinner and had a great time!
The YoKOYA is a cozy and comfortable restaurant with friendly staff and unrivaled food quality. The design is simplistic and clean. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely come again, when we visit London the next time.
They are specialized in whiskey and beverages but our highlight was definitely the food!
The tempura were cooked evenly, crispy and tasty, served with a sauce which complement each other in a sweet way.
The crispy chicken was tender and soft, still rich in flavor. The lemon amplified it's taste. Equally as good was the salmon, with it's soft texture and juiciness.
The mushrooms had a nice beautiful bite to them and great flavor, which kept us wondering about the way they were cooked.
Important to note here is the quality of the rice. You can feel the difference in the grain of rice, compared to other restaurants. The quality you get here is excellent.
For the desert I chose the homemade Matcha Cake. The firm Matcha layer with it's unique taste was laying on a crispy and crumbly base.
The owners were very friendly, professional and put effort into making our stay a pleasant experience.
Overall the quality, service and flavors you get here are exceptional.

It’s really a wonderful lunch experience. First, the foods are soo nice and authentic Japanese sushi. The ingredients are fresh and tasty. The chef is a Japanese who is so dedicated in sushi. Second, the ambience is so cozy. It really feels like those Japanese small restaurants where people chill after work. Not too tidy but clean enough. Excellent surprise for me on the birthday cake. Really highly recommend this restaurant.

Iv been to this place a few times and its really enjoyable. Food is always good and saff are so kind. Please don't listen to the negative comment made about there licence (sky's comment) short grumpy looking guy. Don't over look this place as a east Asian style chef myself I recommend this place 👌🏼

I'm a big fan of Japanese izakaya in general including its countertop settings, small chats with owners/bartenders/random people sitting next to me, private/intimate atmosphere, nice food... etc.
Every single time I travel, the first thing I do is finding the go-to izakaya place in that area.
In London, for sure, I visited at least 8-9 different places to find the hidden gem.
And, here's my pick.
Food items, servers, owners... they have the authentic Japanese izakaya vibe.
If you want to experience legit Japanese izakaya bar, this is where you need to check.

Small Japanese tapas restaurant, with many authentic dishes. Slightly pricey for what you get.
The restaurant was kinda messy when we went with boxes and papers all over the kitchen on the first floor and cups and plates all over the dining area in the basement.

Very friendly and welcoming staff! Reasonably priced for delicious tapas. I’d recommend getting 4-5 meals if you are two people. Recommended place if you’re craving some Japanese dishes :)

Honestly a hidden gem. Not our first time here, but first time after lockdown for a little snack and a drink and we were thoroughly impressed! Book in advance, order and pay in advance - eat and go so minimum interaction with the super friendly staff (better to be safe!). Staff were wearing masks, provided hand sanitizer, we just felt very safe.
The FOOD of course is incredible, we only had some mentaiko squid which was just so perfect, and double portion of fatty tuna sashimi which was probably the best we had in London EVER (and we have sampled quite a few places!). We definitely need to come back for a bigger meal or do takeaway!

Very tasty, authentic Japanese cuisine. Friendly staff. Felt like being back in Japan.

Had a fabulous meal here the other night. No food photos I’m afraid…my camera’s battery was low…but the food was all excellent - this chef clearly knows what he’s doing. The odd thing about this place is that, due to COVID, you have to order by WhatsApp before you arrive….they’re paranoid about getting sick so are minimising unnecessary contact in the restaurant. So we did that and it was easy. Don’t let it put you off trying this unique little place.
When we arrived, you can see the chef upstairs and descend stairs to the restaurant below. It’s a basic place but you’re not here for a beautiful venue, you’re here for delicious Japanese food…and the chef does not disappoint. Starter with a bowl of miso soup…hard to screw up miso soup and they didn’t, it was awesome….so we were off to a great start. The sashimi that followed was delicious…they through in a freebie piece of really excellent tuna, whose name I forgot (sorry). They had a wide range of traditional sushi rolls too…and the shrimp tempura roll we chose was delicious also. Had some tempura shrimp and vegetables next - with great, very light batter on it…fantastic. Probably my fave dish was the Karaage Chicken…mouth-wateringly good.
So don’t let the weird COVID measures put you off…this place serve great food. The chef is part owner and the other owner is front of house (Yokoya)…and she is the most charming host you could find…very reminiscent of many of the meals I have had in Japan. Overall an excellent evening.

Amazing food, lovely service, go for it if you have the chance you won't regret it! Haven't had such a quality since I lived in Japan !

I've stopped by twice now and I love the atmosphere. It feels like a true Izakaya atmosphere where it's cozy and underground. All of the employees greet you when you walk in. And you know when a business is owned by Japanese people, it's going to be authentic Japanese food. Service is excellent, drinks are my favorite since I love Japanese whiskey, and the food is excellent quality and shows up piping hot. The owner chatted with us and was very friendly. She even gave us suggestions for other Japanese restaurants to try out.

Nice and quite Japanese restaurant. Service is great. The black cod fish is outta this world, so succulent and mouth-watering. Really nice experience. Highly recommended!

Always a wonderful experience - incredible food and delightful service indeed. This place is truly special.

I’ve loved this place for years and just tried their delivery. It was such a treat to have food of this standard brought to my door. The grilled aubergine with sweet miso and fresh tuna were just gorgeous. Don’t hesitate just order!
W. B.
Well worth a visit -- great atmosphere, probably the best service I've ever had anywhere, and fantastic flavour. The belly pork in particular (grilled in teriyaki sauce) was absolutely divine, and among the most delicious things I've ever eaten.
Also conveniently placed for gigs in Camden Town. Will definitely be coming again.

A heart warming izakaya tucked away from the busy streets. We come here almost every week.
E. S.
Great and super traditional, felt like i was in Japan as the hostess and the regulars were speaking in Japanese. The Skewers were grilled on request too a little over 20 minutes but was well worth the wait. In my opinion it’s not expensive as you get what you pay for; the food was of the highest quality and the Katsu was delicious and you can tell it was home made. Loved this place ♥️
S. C.
The owner chef Kuwaki-san was originally trained and worked as a "Kaiseki chef" (Kaiseki is a style of very high quality, traditional multi-course Japanese dinner) for many years in Japan and has cooked for celebrities. He has also provided First-Class meals to Japan Airlines (JAL). So, despite its rather casual and stylish tapas bar-like atmosphere, you will encounter real Japanese meals with authenticity and integrity, which are missing in many 'Japanese' restaurants in London. In addition, their Japanese whiskey selection is the best in town.
B. B.
* Excellent service - kind and polite.
* Delicious yakitori - I highly recommend getting the chicken thighs in both flavors. If you're feeling adventurous, I the hearts and gizzards are delicious too, but may not be for everyone.
* Very fresh fish, reasonably sliced.
* A great selection of Japanese whiskey.
* A very intimate (hole in the wall) atmosphere. If you've ever been to a small bar in Golden Gai, you'll feel right at home.
P. A. L.
An absolute delight introduced! Every single dish was absolutely amazing starting from sake tataki to soft and spicy salmon roe. The service was top notch as well.
One of the best dining experiences in London.
Will be coming here again!

Hidden Japanese gem in Camden with delicious food and great drinks. Lovely owner Yoko is very friendly and has good recommendations. The truffle pasta is to die for and the menu is truly extensive for a small place!
L. S.
Randomly came across this place on a free Japanese magazine that I picked up in another Japanese restaurant. Was pleasantly surprised by how delicate each dish is - delicious and down-to-earth Japanese dishes that have a home cooked feel to it. My only issue is with portion size - we felt like we've ordered loads of dishes but we were actually only half full! If they could make the dishes bigger or reduce their prices slightly I'd love to go back.
l. e.
Lived round the corner for nearly 5 years and always wanted to see what this place was like. A strange setup with the kitchen the only thing visible from the street, but finally, cleaned windows and a more ordered kitchen inticed us in. A pleasure from start to finish. Welcoming staff and great well prepared food. I'd recommend anyone take the plunge and try this place. It's not big portions but the quality is excellent!
G. R.
Lovely people, great food and a cosy place. I really enjoyed it, especially the tuna sushi and the sea bass sashimi. They also offered some very tasty Japanese spirit in the end.
C. K.
Authentic grilled chicken skewers with a lovely selection of Japanese fruit liquor. Despite the slightly expensive prices it was well worth every penny! Recommend their grilled duck (day's special) and very fatty tuna sushi. 😍👌
B. N.
The food is gorgeous, they have a great selection of drinks, but my absolute favourite thing... I love the atmosphere! It's so chilled out. Casual set up, lots of happy noisy people, not sterile or posh. ❤️❤️❤️
K. Z.
Definitely the best yakitori we have had in all of Europe thus far. The sashimi was also quite good. I recommend skewers you might not already find in Japan such as duck. Their yakitori sauce is definitely homemade as well as their soy sauce which shows you they make their food with a great deal of care and love.
My son really enjoyed their chicken skin. Make sure to make reservations if you plan to go there Thursday-Saturday as they can get quite crowded.
J. Q.
Very cosy and friendly place. Amazing authentic Japanese food. Favourites are chicken katsu curry and deep fried aubergine. The whole family including my little son enjoyed it!
K. N.
Our second visit and we were again blown away by the standard of the food and the friendly, attentive service. The sushi and sashimi were so fresh and tasty. Can’t wait to come back!
l.
Really enjoyed this tiny izakaya!
Was served by the owner (Ayoko) - friendly & fast service. Our suntory whiskey came with the usual whiskey block of ice (with a suntory imprint on it - nice touch).
Had a few yakitori: chicken meatballs, peppers, lamb, wings. All were tasty. Also ordered the seared salmon, chicken katsu & karaage as the mains - all were delightful.
Bill came out to £80 for 2, with 2 drinks. I'd imagine it's busy on weekends; on a Thurs night service was pretty quiet.
Z. N.
Unfortunately they no longer serve yakitori which they were known for as they have changed their menu recently.
However, the food is still tastes really good and the staff are very friendly. Though overall it is quite pricey for the portion sizes.
L. M. B.
Really cosy little gem snuggled away from all the energy that you'd normally expect from Camden- nice to know as a local that there's a real nice, relaxed and authentic hideaway which has really tasty high quality selections to chose from. We felt as if the prices were reasonable for such a independent and local feeling business, and everyone there was extremely down to earth and welcoming. Will be aiming to come back! ^_^ One of my most favorite places in Camden now, thanks again. :-)
M. Z.
It's almost like you're actually in japan. The food is impeccable and you can tell they use properly sourced ingredients to make really authentic food. Really nice selection of drinks too. All for fairly reasonable prices.
J. G.
Great little Izakaya with an informal feel and a wide selection of Suntory whiskies. This is a great place to go for traditional Japanese sushi, tempura or yakitori.
M. B.
Superb food, nice and quiet with very nice and personal service.
J. K.
Lovely staff and fantastic food. With Japanese chefs you know that all the food is bound to be good. Highly recommend getting the tempura prawns :)
R. Z.
A really interesting engagement with Yokoya. Small plates style but every dish was of high quality and careful preparation. The vegetable tempura was well fried, crispy layer but kept the softness of the vegetable. The surprise was the beef in butter sauce. It wasnt the usual diced beef with black pepper sauce. It was a whole strip of beef, perfectly cooked. Yokoya was also really interesting in its layout and the overall experience.
S. D.
This is one of the best Japanese restaurant I have ever been to. Highly recommend the Monk Fish and the Mackerel. Make sure to get the Yuzu at the end of your meal!
E. W.
Walked by and serendipitously decided to eat their in a group of 3 on a Saturday evening. Had some of the best sashimi I've had in a long while - ask the owner for suggestions :)

This place made me really nostalgic about my time in Japan. Literally the only foreign there !
The food menu is huge and a bit all over the place, but so are most places in Asia where language barrier is real, but the food is yum!
R. B.
>went camden town for craft beer with two mates
>wandered for food, found YOKOYA
>ordered wagyu in dashi soup, bonito sashimi, urchin sashimi, deep fried jumbo prawn, deep fried pork chop curry
>GREAT sashimi and wagyu 👍👍
>small portion (bar snack size)
>the quality of food made me forget it's a bar so damn good OMG!
>they serve Japanese whiskey, sake and beer
>didnt order drinks
>helpful staff keeped filling water for us
>around £28 per person for food
>quite pricey for a student like me
>really worth to go again
J. W.
Brilliant Japanese food, feels like mama’s home cook. Black Cod was pure perfection, definitely recommend. ( ˊ̱˂˃ˋ̱ )
M. W.
Cosy underground Japanese eatery that transports you from the heart of Camden to the centre of Tokyo. Lots of small plates mean you can try a variety of dishes, whilst of course sampling some of the choices from the extensive sake and shochu (Japanese vodka) menu.
M. E.
Authentic and delicious Japanese food with an unusually good wine selection.
S. M.
Love this place! It feels very Japanese and most of the customers are indeed Japanese. The food is of very high quality. I will be going back here again very soon!
A. P. F.
Very good and authentic Japanese restaurant. Calm and quiet ambient. Quick and detailed service. We come back again.
A. M.
Questionable with such a high star rate - it was good but the quality was adequate not beyond the 4 stars... The thing I did not like was toilet sign it says Out of order in English but in Japanese it says it's working fine, I found it bit strange.
S. W.
Really friendly and welcoming. Great service with authentic Japanese food and beverages.
S. M.
A very nice Japanese restaurant in Camden Town. The eel on rice was delicious. People are friendly and the atmosphere is cosy.
O. R.
Authentic tasty Japanese fair. Friendly and generous host. Always a lovely experience and would recommend anytime!
R. M.
Proper japanese food, great sushi, lovely service and attention to detail, I pooped in Late-ish on Saturday night as a single customer and had a lovely time, my only slight raised eyebrow was the price, its not the cheapest.
Apart from that i had a great time
V. P.
Lovely quaint Japanese restaurant with exceptional sushi and super friendly service.
J. H.
It felt very Japanese to me (and I believe I speak from a position of authority, having lived there) - very reminiscent of the sort of little bars I used to go to when I was living in Tokyo, where chatting with the owner was all part of the experience.
G. W.
Lovely atmosphere of a family-run restaurant with excellent customer service. Food was carefully suggested and delicious. Couldn't ask for anything else!
H. H.
Great bar - don’t expect to leave sober!
The food is a limited menu, but all great - classic drinking food
The katsu curry is fantastic, too
K. Y.
Really authentic Japanese Izakaya on a high end. The chu-toro (middle grade fatty tuna) they served literally melted in my mouth.
V. C.
Absolutely brilliant. Best Sushi in London and the owner of the restaurant is very friendly indeed. Love it

I ate at YoKOYA restaurant on my birthday and it felt really special. Yoko was very kind to me and my boyfriend all the time for dinner.
She prepared our dessert with a birthday candle! It was very good.
The food was great. This is my favorite sushi place in London. The fish are of high quality and taste very fresh. The fried food was also perfectly cooked!
I highly recommend this restaurant, it's definitely one of my favorites. Thank you very much 😊

(Translated) Before Corona, I used to go like a regular when I lived in England. There are quite a few restaurants in London that claim to be Japanese, but this is the only place where you can eat real Japanese at a reasonable price. When I was invited for the first time because of my work, I looked at the homepage and thought that it was like a bar, but the food was also authentic. I would like you to visit us in the sense that you want the expatriates to go and at the same time you want the locals to know the true Japanese food.

(Translated) The price was a bit expensive, but overall it was delicious, and the service and atmosphere were both good. I also liked that most of the visitors are Japanese. It feels like it proves that the meal is delicious ... :-)
