Reviews of Joe Allen Restaurant
E. C.
Wow! Fabulous food, cocktails and service ar Joe Allen. This was my first visit but definitely won't be my last.the ribs were to die for. The cocktails went down a treat and the baked cheesecake was divine. Atmosphere matched the food. Thank you.
J. C.
Fantastic cocktail bar and restaurant. American influenced decor that leans in to the West End theatre area.
Great cocktail menu, although they will make you whatever you want. The food is also really good. Hearty American fare. They have an off-menu hamburger as well, but get your order in early - they sell out pretty quick!
Everything about this place is great - the atmosphere, the drinks, and the food. Could become a regular haunt I feel!

Came here on Valentines and so glad we did. The food was amazing, full of flavour, great portion sizes and good presentation.
The staff were very attentive but not over the top.
The lovely lady we had serving us made sure we had everything we needed, gave us time to go through the menu and even came to check that the dish we ordered was going to be ok due to the nature of it.
She also sorted us out with a drink on her because ours had not arrived on time.
Even with the restaurant being really busy we were not rushed, the atmosphere was perfect and I loved the music being in the background by the pianist.
Would definitely recommend this place. If you are In London, book a table. You will not be disappointed. I will definitely be back

Went there last Saturday night, the food, service and the atmosphere were amazing! Live piano performance was absolutely great, made the whole experience better! Thumb up for the pianist! Would recommend Joe Allen to more ppl.

There is a huge difference between the staff - they are either very friendly or rude !! Came across the rudest cocktail male member of staff ever and our waitress was dreadful. Shame as the lady that showed us to our table was lovely. Our meal came out in dribs and drabs and we had finished our meal the time the condiments appeared. Shame as I took friends as I had been before and last time the staff and experience was fantastic - won’t be rushing back.

Was great for a pre theatre meal. Service was attentive and quick without feeling rushed. I loved the vibe. Loads of photographs of stars from the past, theatre posters etc. Sort of dark cosy feel to it. Food was very tasty and they catered for our allegies in a way that gave me confidence without making me feel like an inconvenience.
K. B.
Lovely bar, welcoming staff and great ambience. Only popped for a drink but will be returning to eat very soon! Restaurant was very busy with guests that seem to be regulars.

Table booked for meal before the theatre. Nice friendly greeting, asked if we were off to the theatre & so our order was taken promptly & food served in good time, without feeling rushed. The vegetable tempura starter was ok, not a very light batter & a couple of pieces were only batter, the veg had done a runner ! The tuna starter was delicious. Mains was the mushroom Wellington, definitely recommend this, a really tasty dish. My partner had the beetroot ravioli special which sadly wasn't so special. Ravioli was nicely cooked but the beetroot lacked that lovely earthy taste & was bland. Service was spot on. Everyone who served was chatty, smiley and helpful, really made our evening & thank you Ben for sorting our bill promptly at the end. All in all, loved the place, will definitely eat here again....and again . Great staff

Love it here. Waitress treats you like a long lost friend. Great atmosphere and good food ☺️

Came here randomly as my husband and I were just looking for a nice dinner place to chat. All I can say is that we loved it here!! I ordered the grilled calf liver and he ordered the steak frites. We enjoyed our meals. Service wait time was not bad at all. I don't think we waited, each course seamlessly came in at the right time. The only thing I didn't like wad the mocktail but that could have easily been luck, maybe the others are good. I'll like to visit here again and will strongly recommend.
Two starters, two mains, two drinks, two desserts and our bill was ~£85 (including service charge).

I celebrated my PhD earlier this evening in this great place. I am glad to say that it was a cool evening and the venue was certainly one of the reasons for that fruitful evening. The team helped in a splendid manner, the food was extremely good and my friends were very joyful. We shall definitely return for more celebrations. Thank you very much.
A. C.
Had THE BEST Hemingway cocktail there tonight. Some serious talent behind the bar. New place also looks great - thumbs up for new decorations that still have that old feel and ambience like it always had before.
D. M.
As usual a lovely dining experience.

A warm welcome backed up with excellent food and superb cocktails in lovely setting, highly recommended

Hurrah for one of London’s most historically theatrical restaurants. It has moved from its original location & brought to the new location its charm & ambiance. Since the 80’s I have dined here, with my show biz friends, first dates with my latest crush & business partners to close a deal. With the gentle piano music, still photography on the walls of some of entertainments best artist on the wall & posters from shows that turned the fortunes of some of our greatest producers, both in the west end & Broadway. When you go to the bathroom, you will see some of London’s finest collections of still photography with the great Joe Allen himself from the New York Restaurant. The bathrooms are a joy to visit. The menu is well thought out, as this is a place to talk, dine & drink. It is open late into the night, as many performers & theatre staff will come here to relax after the show. With the Strand Palace Hotel attached to it, you don’t really need to go home after dinner. You could book in there & in the morning on the Strand there are clothes shops & a pharmacy for toiletries if you have not planned your night there. Very surprised this is not a five star rating on this site. Just goes to prove some are very hard to please even in the best places in London
G. B.
Loved Joe Allen and can't believe this was only my first visit. It won't be my last.
The sweetcorn and crab soup is divine and a brilliant steak tartare too
Lovely, personable service and more amazing atmosphere
V. D.
The food was really great. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to enjoy great food in a friendly environment
A. W.
Went here for lunch on Sunday. Food and service really good. The menu is a bit different and does not have the biggest choice, but still really good. Atmosphere also good.
G. H.
Nice cocktail. Quick service but place was almost empty. Steak tartare was excellent. Eggs Royal was ok. Would have been better if hollandaise sauce was warm. Dessert of apple tart and ice cream started well. Then after finding 6 pieces of apple core I gave up. When I told our server/manager the reposnse was "I'll pass that on". Nothing was taken off the bill, disappointingly. I commented on having to pay for an unsatisfactory dessert and was told , robotically "I have taken your comments on board". We won't be back.
R. r.
A great menu. Food was lovely. Staff are wonderful. Very attentive and pleasant. We will be returning very soon.
W. W.
Good atmosphere, the decor is a bit pastiche, but it’s lively and warm. Food is great and it makes a difference having live music at the background.
I’d recommend a meal here!

Joe Allen located in Covent Garden is a slice of New York in London, featuring a brasserie style menu serving from breakfast until late (open until 11.45PM) in a wood-panelled basement. Split across two levels Joe Allen's walls are covered with posters and memorabilia of theatre productions, offering on certain select days events such as a piano brunch and comedy hour. Joe Allen's involvement in the London theatre scene since 1977 is deep - sponsoring the Stage’ Best Newcomer award every year.
Dishes like fluffy Ricotta pancakes and maple syrup with poached strawberries and mascarpone; classic American Waffles topped with blackberry compote and crab bisque provide tasty food that is reasonably priced. The service is American style - friendly, efficient and well drilled. The drinks selection is something special as well offering non alcoholic drinks and unique creations such as the Triple Rum Punch.
Having been at Joe Allen's for breakfast, lunch and dinner the consistency of the food, drinks and service makes it is a sure bet for theatre goers, early risers or those looking for late supper seven days a week. Finally their policy around the payment of staff is exemplary with service charge not used to pay minimum wage - is added to each member of staffs wage to ensure they earn a good fair guaranteed income.
D. D.
Never disappoints. Great surroundings, friendly, attentive staff, great menu, good selection of non-alcoholic beverages for dry-Jan too.
G. S.
Lovely food, great service and full of atmosphere for a night out seeing a show. Great cocktails too!
S. K.
I loved the atmosphere.Food was good-not extraordinary for the price.I realised I was charged an extra 4 pounds for the wine!( was charged the price of the one below mine in the wine list) but it was late when I realised and felt bad to say (ordered Barbera which is 41 pounds but charged 45).The discretionary charge was not obviously discretionary so an extra 16 pounds was added to the bill without being asked.I would have liked to have the liberty to decide the tip I wanted to give. I found this extremely unacceptable and kind of against the law.Basically, the reason for not coming back 😒
B. P.
The best restaurant in Covent Garden. Great food, good staff and understated quality 👌
A. J.
Very Broadway. Strong service. More scen-y than food-y. But still tasty.
J. H.
Ambiance and service is good, but 7 ribs and a small lump of coleslaw for £21 is poor value and unsatisfying. At the long established Maxwell's in the same area, £19 will get you a full rack.
K. W.
We arrived late for our reservation and close to last orders. The staff were very helpful and helpful and relaxed us . Good food and good service. Thanks
S. N.
Gorgeous food and nice pre show atmosphere but we were given a dinky table in a narrow passage
R. E.
I Loved this Restaurant for the atmosphere and the Food was pretty good too. Sadly the service was not as good as i would have expected from a brasserie of this standing
C. C.
Excellent service.
In the notes on the online booking I had said that we were eating before attending the theatre so were on a tight schedule. Normally restaurants don't seem to read the notes. At Joe Allen's that's not the case.
The front of house manager confirmed that with me then made sure the team knew this. All the food and drinks came out at a speedy pace and the bill was dealt with promptly, unlike other restaurants where you spend forever trying to catch the waiter's attention to get it.
This was my first time at the New incarnation of Joe Allen's. It looks and feels like its predecessor. For those that don't know it prides itself on being a 'theatre' restaurant. I spotted one or two West End faces.
For food we shared the bacon and cheese croquettes and the vegetable tempura as starters. The tempura was delicious, the croquettes were OK but I couldn't taste the bacon nor the truffle in the truffle mayo.
My fellow diner had the pork belly which was devoured in no time. I had the hotdog. This was absolutely delicious. My only criticism was that the chef had decided to cover it in a sea of cress (see pic). I have no idea why. It detracted from the look and taste of the dish. Some chives would have been a much better and more logical solution. I am being a little picky but also honest.
I would thoroughly recommend Joe Allen's and intend to return for one of their musical brunches.
K. P.
Always my choice for a nice dinner night. Unpretentious, relaxed atmosphere and a good service.
G. C.
With wonderful ambience and wonderful food, this restaurant has been at the heart of London's West End for decades and the walls are covered with brilliant photos and theatrical memorabilia.
Also the lunchtime set menu is brilliant value. The restaurant is a haunt of theatre people and performers so star-spotting is a possibility as well.
The staff are also super-friendly and helpful (my friend had a baby in a pram and wasn't made to feel like a pariah). I supposed it helps that he's won an Olivier Award.
Z. D.
As great as London is for food, it's quite hard to find a good place before heading to the theatre (or even just a nice venue this centrally to the city) but Joe Allen's is a touch of class at a comfortable price. The piano plays every day of the week for dinner and at brunch, the service is top notch (love how the kitchen staff bring out the food but the waiters are required to set it down on the table). The service in general is excellent, as is the exemplary decor, the whole place oozes style.
The food itself is also very good in my experience, if you haven't been before it's worth noting there are no burgers on the menu but you'll see plenty being served around. To order from the secret burger menu, you just have to whisper to one of the wait staff - they are fantastic and probably my favourite thing to get. It's not especially expensive unless you get one of there cocktails (in my opinion they're nothing special but the price is fairly good and the champagne classic is excellent I'm told). Overall I'd absolutely recommend it, the atmosphere with the music is top notch, and it's the right volume to talk which I think is always important. Get yourself down there!
C. W.
Small steak overpriced fat chips 4 potato sticks seriously if you want fries you need to order sides but it said steak with fat chips service was OK wasn't asked if everything was OK, trying to get attention was hard the guy wearing the black waist coat completely ignored us shame as had high hopes for this place.
E. S.
What a fantastic restaurant!!! We were going to the theater so we didn’t have much time but the crew were so helpful and the food came fast. It tasted amazing, best beef I’ve ever had!
I. W.
The secret off-menu burger at Joe Allen is called one of London's best and I'm really glad I stopped in. Delicately flavoured with the perfect juiciness and a firm, explosively tasty bacon.
A. B.
Great vibe here. Very chilled, old timey American style. Bar staff know how to make a damn good cocktail, very impressive. Drinks are gorgeous. £7 - 9 per cocktail/specialist drink but well worth it. Their Whisky & Amaretto Sours are to die for, girlfriend is a big fan of the Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri. They also make a good Old Fashioned.
Not tried the food but looks and smells the part. Never uncomfortably busy, great ambience, lighting, decor and conversation just seems to flow with whoever you are with. Comfy bar stools. Very clean.
Pianist is a lovely guy too, really enjoys what he does and is good at it.
If I lived in London I would visit regularly. Going to start making a point of going here every time I'm around though. Its very, very good.
P. S.
As always great atmosphere, lovely food and excellent service
S. H.
Seemed nice. Very posh and very theatrical. Were in danger of being ignored, despite sitting right by the bar
D. O. T.
First visit to the restaurant’s since its relocation and happy to report it is difficult to spot the join. Joe Allen’s is as good as it ever was and the pecan pie ... apologies but impossible to type while dribbling
J. I.
Always has a warm, friendly atmosphere and incredible food and drinks.
Z. F.
I admire this place very much. It has a friendly mood. The food is exeptionaly good. the service is efficient and the team is polite. The pay is decent. profoundly recommend.
R. R.
Off-menu burger was decent and definitely worth a visit but i wish they did theirs less well done and more in the medium range. Prices are fair for the area and ambience.
V. T.
Classy joint, lovely food and attentive staff
N. M.
Good food at a reasonable price in a lovely atmosphere
b.
I can't comment on the food as I didn't have any.
Polite staff, small restaurant, pretty dark, very expensive.
Holds my record for the expensive beer I've ever bought.
A. B.
Great atmosphere. Tasty food. Efficient service for pre-show dinner. Portions a bit on the small size but that's London for you!
M. N.
Lovely place, great atmosphere and the food was superb. Colleague had the liver and he couldn't stop saying how great it was. Which collided with my unstoppable "Wow, the fish cake, you should try the fish cake"
We could both agree on the mashed potatoes (side order for me, included with the liver) - heavenly.
And the staff was super friendly and fun.
Thanks, guys!!
D. M.
Loved it. Great ambience service and food
N. S.
This is by far one of the best restaurant experiences I've had! The ambience when stepping into the restaurant is amazing, we visited during lunch and were greeted with a lady playing grand piano. The cellar 1950s inspired decor is tremendously intricate and you can't take your off your surroundings. The staff were brilliant and catered to our every need. The food was average but because everything else was so grand it didn't matter. Will definitely be revisiting❤️
K. A.
Yes yes yes! I'd recommend to book at least a week in advance as this place is in high demand and with good reason! If you like an upscale American diner this is for you. The food is delicious, decor is really warming and interesting, staff are friendly and efficient, lots too choose from on the menu. Look out for the specials board too. I had the highly rated ceasar salad which was HUGE and really tasted good and the ribs were so moreish - I'll be back for more.
S. C.
An excellent go to place for dinner that I occasionally use when I'm up in Strand area of London. It can get busy so it's recommended you book. Good service, food and atmosphere. I bought a friend with me this time as he had never been before and thoroughly enjoyed the place and food - he had the duck. We'll worth a visit.
S. L.
This has got a great atmosphere. If you're lucky you may see an actor or 2, although we've been going for years and only seen someone once! The food is great and not bad value either. They definitely squeeze as many tablea in as they can with as many sittings as possible so not a place to spend all night in but as long as you know that before you go then great. Suits eating around any shows matinee or evening shows. Great place
N. M.
THIS IS THE BEST !!! PLACE...THE FOOD IS SCRUMPTIOUS...THE STAFF WONDERFUL...AND AN EXCELLENT (NOT SNOOTY) BAR....
M. C.
We love this place. The hostess is always super friendly when we arrive as well as the waiting staff who are also very patient and attentive. We’ve always enjoyed the food and they do the best Amaretto Sours in London! So good. And we love that they let our friend bring her little four legged friend.
D. J.
I love this place! They have tasty meals, their menu is rich, The chief cook in that spot is an expert, I enjoy very much eating all their dishes. The dishes are consistently good, the service towards the customers is friendly. I often go to this restaurant and I not even once was unhappy. I recommend it with no hesitation.
O. M.
The NY themed restaurant is perfectly located around the Covent Garden theatres. Nice food.
M. R.
Wow meal / staff excellent piano player a nice touch
K. F.
Excellent food, wine and friendly service
J. B.
Had a wonderful meal at Jo Allen’s, great food, polite, professional front of house, great atmosphere and decor. I would highly recommend this Restaurant
L. W.
Marvellous as always, pre or post theatre it never disappoints (unless you get the awful table squashed at the intersection of the bar and the route to the loos)
R. P.
I frequent this special place often because I like the good air that is unique to this restaurant. The crew is very helpful and experienced. The service is very quick. Not to mention, the food they prepare is first-rate. I have been there often and I was always delighted. The rate is reasobable. I suggest this restaurant to all my friends.
N. F.
This place was a last moment find pre theater and I loved it. Live piano player, cocktails and pictures everywhere. It was like stepping back in time. The food choices were great and really yummy. I'll definitely go back next time I'm in the theatre district!
R. S.
Came for our anniversary dinner and honestly some of best service (from Karl.. he's an amazing server and try your best to get him!), food and drinks we've had. Would highly recommend and we shall definitely be visiting again! Honestly if you want a pre theatre dinner this is the place.
A. W.
Wonderful greeting and such friendly service. The food is delicious and the staff are fantastically attentive. The surroundings are wonderful. I know there's a bit of an issue with the fire alarms going off in the hotel above and we were evacuated BUT it was dealt with so brilliantly it would be ridiculous to hold it against the venue. Well done team.

OUTSTANDING SERVICE & FOOD!!!!!!!!!
We dined here with my boyfriend and his family for a special occasion and now we have left with fond memories. A special shout out to Ben who actually sang "Happy Birthday" from the top of his lungs and solo too! What a natural born entertainer. He didn't hold back. No request was too big or too small either. He was accommodating and genuine. Nothing felt too formal or too forceful yet done in a very professional manner. Second shout out goes to Kat. The way she manned our table when the food arrived was explained it to us proved that she is in control, confident, authentic and kind. Honestly it was the best service I have had! Please give them the recognition they deserve!
M. S.
Outstanding service and the amazing food! We were looking for a casual restaurant to have a dinner with our family(9 of us)... and we decided to venture to Joe Allen without reservations on a Saturday evening. The hostess was super friendly and more than willing to accommodate us. The service and the quality of the food were amazing. We tried their steaks and they were perfectly cooked. Will definitely come back.
B. O.
We like Joe Allen a lot. Good service, Quality food to reasonable prices (the sausages are best) and you dress as you like. Interior of the restaurant is so cool, and reminds us of the a typical New York bistro. The athmosphere of old movies and especially musical-theatre is easy to feel. And the location is great, this is the old breakfast saloon of Strand Palace Hotel, close to Covent Garden, Savoy Hotel and the different theatres. And last, but not least, the "piano man" plays every evening (live)!
A. S.
Great food great company waiters were little bit quick to remove empty plates before other people at our table had finished. Beer far too pricey, £6.25 per half pint bottle £12.50 a pint☹️
S. P.
I arrive at this outstanding restaurant many times as I enjoy the good mood that is part of this place. The personel is exceptionally welcoming and skilfull. The service is exceptionally quick. Not to mention, the food they serve is first-rate. I came more than once and I was never disappointed. The pay is fair. I highly suggest this restaurant to to everybody.
K. W.
Really like this place. Not too expensive but great food done really well with decent sized portions. Good selection of good and drink with the exception of no cider. Service pretty good but occasionally a bit slow... Would recommend and roll go back.
A.
First time in the new place... they have done it really well. It felt like the old place, but different. Staff were warm and welcoming as ever; attentive & friendly & they know the menus very well. Cocktails are great- recommend the rum punch. I'd also recommend the liver, lobster roll & the chicken parmigiana. Desert has to be the brownie. Very reasonable for the West End.
j. p.
I had tortellini and my partner had the steak, both were brought out really quickly, impeccably cooked, service perfect! Lovely restaurant with great puddings aswell. Highly recommend!
R. B.
I haven’t been since they moved, but have been going on and off for thirty odd years. The space is much smaller, a bit like visiting swanky friends who’ve fallen on hard times to be honest but it kind of looks the same. Try and avoid the tables for two, they’re a bit squished in. The barman and the woman with the very impressive tattoo on her back seem to have gone and the waiting staff now dressed in green instead of white. The whisky sour’s are still good though. The food? It was okay, but to be honest nobody ever went to Joe Allen’s for the food. I had a nice steak and the darling Julie said her sole was good and the pecan pie is as lovely as ever. Still can’t have it with ice cream though. They don’t have burgers on the menu but of course they will sell you one. To round up, not as good as it used to be, but then it’s always been a bit that way. Would I go back? maybe, maybe not.
R. F.
Amazing food, great atmosphere too!
M. E.
Excellent evening. Very helpful and charismatic waitress, good food (lots of fish dishes) but the thing that sells Joe Allen is the ambience and vibe. Pianist knew what to play to keep the background alive in a full restaurant. They've been around a very long time at Joe Allen so they have the formula spot on.
T. R.
HAPPY AT ITS NEW LOCATION! I have been visiting Joe Allen's at its previous Exeter Street location since the 1970's. It has now moved round the corner and still retains much of the same atmosphere. Food is still good!
D. L.
The food is comfortable and good but nothing exceptional. what you will go here for time and again is the atmosphere and the service. there is always a chance that post-theatre you will find yourself on the table next to the very people you saw on stage an hour ago. the staff are very friendly and the pianist is a real star of the west end. lovely spot for luvvie spotting.
R. S.
A real shame to have to give this 3 stars as I think that this place has potential. Personally my food selection was good, however this was let down by poor quality meals for my other accomplices, and also clueless waitressing.
I had the baby back ribs which were decent, nice bbq sauce and the meat was tender. Mrs had the fish cake which was dry, and there was supposed to be a poached egg on top, which somehow came hard boiled. Who on earth likes a poached egg that’s overcooked? This is school boy stuff. I also had a look at the other tables, a few of them ordered burgers which looked drier than Madrid in August. I have to say that the cheese and bacon croquettes were decent so I’ll give them that.
Now let’s talk about the waitressing. First thing that came out were the croquettes, my lady just plops them on the table, I have to ask what it is, and only then does she look at this piece of paper and says “croquettes”. Seriously? There’s 4 of us, use some common sense. Then they forgot our side portion of fries. And then the waitress who actually took our orders kept on doing this weird thing with her face where she kept grinning and showing her teeth as she wrote down our orders and took our card payments. For the price that this restaurant is charging and in this kind of location, they really need to up their service and focus more on actually making high quality meals.
P. G.
Been here many times. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, the staff are attentive and the food is excellent. You don't get huge amounts but always perfectly cooked. Last time we dined here was for my parents 70th wedding anniversary and the staff could not do enough for us.
J. A.
Best Liver and Bacon I've ever had. Liver was cooked perfectly, still pink and soft, the bacon was crispy and smokey, the onions deeply caramelised, rich and jammy, with welcome extra crispy bits on top. Properly excellent and worth five stars for that alone. Also loved the decor, the live jazz piano, the friendly staff and the Joe Allen pilsner. Will definitely return.
M. C.
Joe Allen is so much better in its new location. They've kept all the best features - like the showbiz pictures - and added lights that brighten the atmosphere (and mean you can now read the menus!). We had a great front of house welcome from Maxine, and the food was good too. Just the place to meet and eat before a play or a show.
D. E.
Ask for a Sidecar (brandy and orange juice). Terrific cocktail, terrifically done. Food is reliably solid and service friendly. Sometimes it feels a little too pricey but it's one to come back to over and over. Comfortable.
J. G.
Really good food and really good, attentive wait staff. Whether here for a long meal or a pre-theatre feed, they serve at the appropriate speed and are patient and brilliant when asked for recommendations.
Never had problems booking a table and the decor and setting is discreet and private.
Love the Mac and cheese.
M. S.
I Love Joe Allen's Restaurant so much. I have been visiting here as a regular for about two years when I visit Drury Lane. The ambience here is perfect for the theatre "Lovey" crowd. You are always greeted warmly and made to feel welcome right away from the lovely team made up of Stuart, Debbie, Francesco, Mani, Maxine and Maria. The menu is varied and offers a good choice for all tastes, my favourites are either the Rib Eye or Sea Bass. The waiting staff are all lovely and attentive. Food usually arrives quickly, well presented, hot and very tasty. It is great for a pre theatre meal or a post theatre one as well. They offer an excellent pre theatre set menu as well. Also, pop in for a breakfast if you are passing, that is a treat as well. I have read below a couple of criticisms, in my opinion mostly unfounded. Like all restaurants they sometimes have a busy shift where they are rushed off their feet and there may be a bit of a wait. Price wise they are competitive with other restaurants near by, not vastly expensive ( It is Central London after all) What is included in the meal is clearly on the menu and the "Extras" are clearly marked if you so wish. I am yet to visit a restaurant in London that offers free Sparkling Water, they are happy to oblige with free tap if you so wish. I have lost count how many times I have been to Joe Allen's and can honestly say I have never had a bad meal there. It is advisable to book in advance as it does get busy especially on Friday and Saturdays.

We booked here for our pre-show lunch on Sunday... it really got us in the theatrical mood!!! Great theme, hundreds of stage photos around! Our food and drinks were fab and the staff were very tentative even though the whole place was fully booked.
The lady on piano really topped off our experience. No faults, would defo come here again!
W. M.
Very good food and attentive staff, thanks
L. T. R.
We went for the Thanksgiving dinner, and the food was good. It wasn't what I considered traditional, but it was enough to connect us with home. I would've given a 5, but our poor server was quite stretched and it showed on his demeanor the entire night. I felt bad for him, but not enough to give a 5! However, the piano player was phenomenal.

Had to leave for Heathrow at 1. Walked onto Joe Allen at 12 and they were great! Helped us choose dishes that could be served quickly and gave us a table though we didn't have a booking. Spent a lovely hour there. Great food, excellent service and attentive staff. Loved the atmosphere. Memorable last meal in London. Would definitely go back and recommend it to everyone.
S. D. C.
This beautiful restaurant is nestled in a quiet street in Covent Garden. The staff here are always amazing with a wine menu to suit all tastes and wallet flexibility. The food is OUTSTANDING, the cocktails are special - all of this with a fantastic atmosphere.. Make sure you book your table in advance or you'll be hungry sat at the bar!
S. G.
Great atmosphere and lovely staff. The service is swift and the food very tasty. I had the famous hot dog last time I was there and it was very nice. The chilli however was sensational. The wine is also delicious with a wide range to choose from.
A. L.
Fantastic service and amazing live music by the wonderful pianist Gilly.
Went for a birthday meal and they made the effort of singing happy birthday with the piano, so friendly.
Food was superb and staff were efficient and friendly. Visit this place for if you want great service, relaxing atmosphere at a great price.
Did I mention the Great Gilly the pianist?
Thankyou Joe Allen's.
K. H.
A New York inspired restaurant in the heart of London. Playbills, a live pianist and old movie posters greet you underground here.
It is a busy, bustling, American style atmosphere. The food (also American) consists of a lot of steak, fries, fish - typical USA grill stuff. The quality is good and the portion sizes even better. My plate was bursting. I would say it is good value for money too; you can have two courses for £15 depending on what time of day you go.
The drinks are another story, the cocktails being tiny and highly priced (£7.50 for a glass about two inches tall). I think that is just part and parcel of being in the theatre district though.
The staff are fast and friendly enough. I would say that this is a good place to go before or after a show, especially if you are showing someone around London as you will get to show them Covent Garden in the same trip.
H. E.
I visit here regularly and always have the bar steak. It never disappoints. Atmosphere is great, particularly if you are around for the pianist to be playing. Someday I'll be adventurous enough to check out the rest of the excellent looking menu.
A. M.
First restaurant in London. From the US, and traveling from Paris, our expectations were low (as told) but Joe Allen's was so perfect, especially before a National Theatre show. Service was impeccable, we had a quick turn around time and he made it work gracefully. The swordfish, veg tempura should never leave the menu. Thank you for a great first impression!
T. C.
Great night and food. Staff very attentive with a smile. First visit and will definitely be going back. The place was busy when we ate, it had a good atmosphere without being too noisey or crowded. Couldn't hear the pianist that was playing.
D. L.
Great atmosphere - a bit like a trendy speakeasy with vintage film and theatre posters and photos of visiting stars plastering the walls. Staff were a bit aloof but efficient. I ordered a burger (not listed on the menu, you just ask the waiter for it) which was very tasty, although by no means the best burger I've ever had (I'm becoming a veritable connoisseur in that area!) Cocktails were delicious and well-priced, and wine comes by the glass, carafe (500ml) and bottle. My only gripe was that the food, although very good, was certainly overpriced. However it's a nice alternative to all the bland chains and sub-par tourist traps in Covent Garden.
L. G.
Went with a group of 9 people - all in late twenties. Decent food & decent price. Very nice ambience. Lovely live piano playing during most of our meal. Attentive & pleasant staff.
S. E.
The venue itself looks wonderful, dark, cozy and stylish however the food leaves room for improvement. I had a hot dog and it didn't have any taste. The chips were good but everything else was just ok. Final Bill without drinks or starters 26 pounds
C. W.
Nice central location for the nearby theatres - with incredibly attentive, lovely and welcoming staff. Highly recommended for a quick bite. Note, restaurant seems to be very popular, so if you know you'd like to dine there, book ahead to make a reservation! x
L. M.
Delicious lunch and lovely atmosphere. Friendly staff and several dishes on the menu which were very tempting. Short wait for a table, would have been 5 stars otherwise.
M. A.
Lovely service and atmosphere but don't order the Prawn Cocktail . Appallingly bad, appeared to be very small shrimp used, as opposed to large tiger prawns or similar.
Lots of shredded lettuce and very expensive .
Disappointed to discover that the 12.5% service charge forms part of the staff wages. Not a practice I support and requested it to be removed from the bill. I prefer to tip employees for great service and would hope that it acts as an incentive, as opposed to underpinning employers wage bill.
Otherwise enjoyable but mainly due to the lovely service.
T. L.
Friendly and unique in London, great New York style food and bar.
G. C.
Surprisingly good for a fast pre-show dinner, and the retro posters everywhere made it quite interesting.
R. G.
Positives first... the staff in the relocated venue for this previous Covent Garden stalwart are much friendlier than I recall from the old Joe Allen, and pretty efficient too - another uplift cos service could certainly be a bit of a lottery in the old model!
The pianist has been retained, and offers a reassuringly nostalgic musical accompaniment to the general restaurant buzz. The menu too is pretty good, consistent with Joe Allen in recent years, but not a patch on the choice and variation available before the takeover. And the wines are pretty well chosen, and decently priced.
And then some discordant notes... the decor has sort of been reproduced to try and re-create the atmosphere of the old site... but the rooms are half the size, and the atmosphere is more oppressive therefore, with the faux-period decor sadly reminiscent of a well-known pub chain, for all the theatrical memorabilia seeks to leave a different impression. They've even managed to dumb down the toilets... the old site was among the first in London to introduce the fabulous Dyson blow dryers... gone, and we're reduced to tawdry - and thin - paper towels. Not fun.
My ribs were overdone and dry-ish and chewy as a result, with a lack of barbecue sauce... not inedible, but not luscious and fantastic either. The slaw was thin and vinegary. Great fries though. My colleague's meal was good and we'll presented. 50%... could do better.
Overall, this new location seems to be trading on a name it didn't earn, and not bringing much that's new to the party. It was busy though, so... others may well disagree. I wouldn't rush back, but I wouldn't avoid it either.
P. V.
It was a real pleasure to dine here. The staff were very attentive and the food was devine. Went there to celebrate my husband's birthday and without even asking they bought him some icecream with a candle.. it's the little extras they gave that earned them thier 5 stars!
J. R.
Still one of my favourite places in London to eat, despite the changes since new ownership. Burgers should go back to being the worst-kept secret in London and stay OFF the menu, and the chips need to go back to being thicker! The staff feel the same so I do hope the new Management listen. Thank goodness the staff remain the stalwarts they are - they really are the heart of the place, including the best Pianist in London :)
J. R.
We used to like the old London location of Joe Allen and the new one is just as great. It seems like a bigger place now but retains the same atmosphere and feels like the it has been there for years. Highly recommended for a pre-theatre meal.
C. H.
Classic American diner. Lovely atmosphere in the heart of theatreland. Burgers to die for. Lovely staff. Sensibly priced house wine. What's not to like?
V. P.
Great decoration and ambiance. The menu is simple, and the food is filling. If you are seeing a show or want to feel a little glitz it is a worth a visit.
A. B.
Food was good, ambience enjoyable. Staff need better training on how to serve food and drinks. Preferably walk round to a guest rather than lean over one guest to give the other their food or beverage.
A. M.
You gotta love this place just for its setting. A basement with flamboyant interior but also kind of cosy at the same time. I guess it makes the perfect choice for a rainy day. The food is not excellent but is decent, albeit the prices are high, so overall value/money is not very good. The service was excellent though and it is definitely worth checking out for the atmosphere alone.
H. G. V. M. P.
Fantastic food great atmosphere working until last client. Great choice.
S. C.
I had a nice Thanksgiving lunch here. Food was very good, though I’d argue a little expensive for what it was. Service was good too, though there was very little flexibility beyond the set menu - bread was apparently quite a big deal, while chips were out of the question.
T. W.
Lovely food. Great choice fantastic atmosphere.
B. W.
The food here is pretty great, though a tad on the pricey side. Have an eye on their events though as they have live music to accompany your meal at times.
Great for brunch or dinner.
C. P.
Great service and good food.
J. P.
Came here for my birthday lunch last week and it was amazing. The decor is cosy with a touch of glam. Friendly, warm service and delicious food.
N. P.
Excellent. Good food. Great atmosphere and good service. It is worth seeking out this London dining experience as it is a very civilised alternative to the normal London chains.
S. T.
Good food. Amazing pecan pie. There was live piano in the background but it was so quiet that it was a non event. Having said that I hate loud dinner venues so I am really surprised that I thought the piano was a bit nothing.
C. K.
The food was ok. I ordered the burger, and the bacon was burned so it tasted weird. My partener ordered the ribs and the sauce was too bitter. We really liked the fried squid and the ambient was very nice.
T. &. h.
Really pleased to find this restaurant has survived the move from its old location, with a similar ambience and decor! Food just as good as ever with the same pictures on the wall and friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
B. R.
I love Joe Allen. Proper hearty American food in a genuine, relaxed atmosphere, frequently with live music. Their burger is one of the best in London. To be honest, with their well-established, tried-and-true menu you can't go wrong whatever you order.
R. H.
This has fast become our favourite London restaurant. Friendly staff, a great vibe and a real pianist at a real piano set the scene for delicious and well prepared food.
M. D.
Lovely restaurant with great food. I had the duck which was lovely. Staff were great and we didn't feel at all rushed. Good for groups of friends and families
J. G.
Lovely atmosphere and my friends all complemented me on our choice. Plus I booked last minute for a table of 9 and it was all very smooth and very accommodating on the same day.
M. B.
One of my favourite Central London haunts. Excellent food, great service and really electric atmosphere. It's also just off the beaten track so feels that little bit extra special plus they always manage to get me a table :-)
S. F.
Overall Very nice meal with very good service, my lamb was well cooked although slightly small in size, lemon tart was a little disappointing flavour wise didn't quite get that zing, calfs liver and ribs were very good.
J. T.
Busy but great atmosphere. Drinks a little costly but the food was about right and more importantly very tasty!
Good service and attentive staff would recommend and will be going back.
T. M.
Booked a table Tuesday for 14.30 really busy food was good nice atmosphere and the service was excellent. Not cheap yet you can make it as expensive as you want. Do have a SEO Christmas menu.
S. J.
A great place to have a pre or post theatre meal. Book well in advance as can het very busy. If you are lucky you may spot a well known face. Great food and wonderful staff. *****
R. W.
Have been to Joe Allen's on and off since the late 70s. It used to be the place to go (if you could get in), and you'd always see a lot of actors as it's in the heart of theatreland.
More recent visits haven't reflected quite the same experience, but it still has a great atmosphere: underground, with 'New York loft' decor and theatre posters, red gingham tablecloths, old furniture, slick waiters, etc.
Favourites include the black bean soup and the burgers, but there is a changing variety of menus.
There are many other restaurants nearby now, but Joe Allen is worth a visit as it's still a little different. Good for group parties, too.
M. T.
Visited for the secret burger and sat at the bar -- disappointing unfortunately. Was hard to make out what was supposed to be stand out about it. However, the place does have a good range of beers, including the San Fran Anchor Steam Beer. Also one hell of an atmosphere with all the clutter on the walls. If you're nearby, worth a quick seat at the bar but again, not necessarily all it's cracked up to be.
A.
Great place for post theatre dining! We arrived at about 10.40 and had a lovely slap up meal, didnt feel rushed or pressurised to leave. GREAT BIG PORTIONS too! Yum!
K. D.
Favourite restaurant for lunch and meeting family. Great atmosphere, superb food and friendly efficient staff who are always ready to help in any way. Great pictures and photos line the walls.
J. R.
Packed full at 7:30 on a Wednesday but quick and efficient service nonetheless for booked table of 12. Surprisingly small menu but something for most tastes. Plates average cost (£15ish) but drinks more pricey. £30 a head overall.
R. H.
Nice restaurant, attentive staff, good food. The beef ribs were the best we have ever had. Great position near theatres and Covent Garden.
A. W.
Always a delightful and excelkent restaurant with 1st class food and menu choice as well as great staff who welcome a customer's return or a new person/s, paying a first visit. Well done all at Joe's. And thank you too.
O. F.
Christmas Dinner. Quite disappointed. Small portion cold veg and just not enough of it. Attentive service but over charged an was a real ordeal sorting it out. Sorted out in the end and atmosphere was great, hence the 3 stars.
p. m.
Last visit was a disaster but glad to see a great improvement at the new location. Enjoyed delicious fish. Still a great London dining institute.
M. J.
Great atmosphere, service and food, it strangely conjures up the best of the West End and Broadway at the same time. Long live the special relationship! A great tragedy that it will be forced to move through redevelopment.
K. M.
Basement restaurant with a lovely atmosphere, bare brick walls, long wooden bar, show posters and nice lighting. You actually get some space around you if you want something a bit more intimate unlike a lot of the huddled restaurants in the west end.
P. P.
A great restaurant in every way! Brilliant food, service and atmosphere. Really reasonable prices given it's in theatre district too. Will definitely be going back.
B. W.
Enjoyed meal and because it was a Monday I asked if we could keep the table for longer than usual and they were very obliging only thing I could say was a couple meal dishes both for main and dessert
R. B.
The food was great. But boy it was way to cold inside.
D. B.
Fantastic food Fantastic team. 😋
R. D.
Quaint restaurant with excellent food. We had a pre theatre lunch, with a pianist playing behind us. Great value for money.
D. H.
A large group of us met for a reunion. Negotiated a set menu with excellent options. Food came out looking and tasting great. Interesting venue downstairs and out of the heat above...
G. K.
Part of Covent Garden history. Been eating here for years and it never disappoints. Great bar to sit and wait for friends, good selection of food and wine list and as always genuinely friendly staff.
S. N.
Perfect for brunch before a matinée. Delicious, reasonably priced menu.....and amazing mojitos! Atmospheric and the bonus of a pianist at weekend brunch time.
F. F.
Went for Sunday brunch with friends. Excellent service, superb food and fantastic price. Couldn't fault it in any way. The braised beef was divine and the peach dessert to die for!
A. D.
Great atmosphere. Great food and great staff! A rare combination these days. Highly recommend
A. M.
Very nice atmosphere, fabulous food though not all that cheap. Good selection of wines. Most of the staff is very friendly. Was on a Sunday evening - not busy at all - had a great time!
S. T.
Excellent service and good food. Had pre theater lunch for granddaughters birthday. Lovely pianist and special cupcake surprise with music organised by supervisor made this a very special day 🎶
a. d.
A great place to go with friends or if by yourself, comfortable to sit at the bar. Loved the live music on a Saturday night. Theatre memorabilia interesting around the place.
B. R.
This spot sure knows how to treat their customers. Constantly with a very kind attitude. The food is conveniently priced, regularly delicious and clean.
A. E.
Good place to go for reliable food and service. Staff are friendly and helpful. Menu clear and should offer something to suit most tastes.
R. S.
The first time I went on a Saturday, it was fantastic, five stars. The second time I went for a Wednesday lunch and it was disappointing. I think reviews suggest there's a lack of consistency here.
L. M.
I first tried Joe Allen's burger at a Burger Monday (held at Camden Town Brewery), and loved Joe Allen's simple take on it.
I found the restaurant in Covent Garden offered similarly simple yet effective food. I had a creamy and fulfilling Mac and Cheese to start with, followed by a lovely Joe Allen Cheeseburger and a Chocolate Brownie which I absolutely adored.
Looking forward to returning there soon!
J. P.
First time at the new Joe Allen. Nice decor and ambience. Food and service was excellent as always. Try and get a table in the lower ground area, not by the front door!
C. T.
Joe Allen has speedily become one of my favourite places to nip in for a truly delicious cocktail. Around the corner from some of the largest theatres and stages in Covent Garden, it's not hidden but is tucked down a street off the main strip. Pass through a single door and down some stairs to enter a dark wood restaurant filled with performance memorobilia. It's hardly memorabilia in a TGI Friday sense, but full of posters that really add to the place. It feels like a timeless place, and to top it off the cocktail I had (a Strawberry Fields cocktail) was easily one of the tastiest I've had in London. We went around 5pm on a Sunday which meant we nearly had the place to ourselves. I've not eaten here so can't comment on food, but for it's a really special spot for a quiet drink.
N. L.
As pre theatre dinners go its a great place. Would i go otherwise? Probably too much meat for me but I am sure others would love it
S. S.
Been going for years, miss the bar from the old place but I think the food has improved! Staff brilliant, love the atmosphere.
R. F.
Have been coming here for 30 years but the show biz buzz is not there anymore - the food was never top notch so atmosphere was everything. Note 12.5 % service added to bill
Still worth a visit however.
N. W.
Real fun staff. Good food with lots of taste to an extent not usually seen outside of Belgium or France. Remember you pay for what you get. Nic
S. C.
Joe Allen's remains as good as ever in it's new home. So much so my guests couldn't believe it was not the original!
Great service and food.
R. H.
Theatre themed and a great location. Service was good. They do squeeze you in there, but otherwise a nice restaurant.
J. S.
Thought the food was excellent but the staff could have better interaction with the customer ie was the food ok would you like everything else with that would like a drink or coffee with that or just talking to us didn't think he spoke English until the very end because he didn't speak to us must of been having a bad day
But having said that the food was amazing
C. S.
Joe Allen is a basement bar and restaurant, modelled after so many downstairs retreats in New York and complete with jukebox, dinner pianist and tons of theater memorabilia over every conceivable wall. What intrigued me was a chance to sample the Joe Allen Secret Burger; an option that is not advertised on their menu or anywhere in the restaurant. It would be churlish of me to suggest that the reason it is kept secret is to hide it away from their customers, but at least it is a solid effort of a burger, plus the rest of the menu looks enticing enough to come back for another look.
H. F.
Top place. I miss the old venue but the steaks are still good. Last dinner before lockdown. I hope it reopens.
F. V.
Best burger, ever!! The place is so famous for its burger, that it's not even on the menu! Lovely environment, American style! Perfect for theatre goers
k. b.
Perfect service.
Breakfast:
Food was amazing,
Portions the perfect size,
Reasonable pricing,
Phenomenal atmosphere,
Amazing interior design,
All around amazing experience
J. M.
The best food ever. Loved it. Had calarmari starter it was fresh and tasty plus steak main was delicious.
T. W.
Fun restaurant steeped in theatrical history. Staff were wonderfully friendly and v v efficient. Food was scrummy...I know I'll be BACK!!
R. S.
Nice place, difficult to have a conversation though and not sure if I would return. Good food but just didn't feel it was my kind of place.
D. D.
Theatre land, round the corner from The Lyceum Theatre. Nice American diner, playing soft jazz music. Walls covered with stars of the theatre and film world. Nice basement feel to it
A. B.
Beautiful restaurant lovely staff and great food. Very efficient and knew we were on a tight timescale so looked after us very well
R. H.
A good dining experience with fun cocktails.
E. K.
Lovely venue. Great good ange atmosphere
P. D.
Old favourite new location. A must for the theatre crowd both on and off stage. Order off menu and get the burger.
M. P. (. P.
Had a work Christmas dinner here, the food was good, nothing out of this world.
I'm looking forward to going back to sample some of the standard menu and the burgers that I've heard so much about
T. “. B.
Delicious food. Lovely staff. Wonderful atmosphere! Would recommend to everyone!
B. L.
So this place is like walking into new york in the 1980's.There is some amazing food on offer which changes everyday, jazz pianist in the corner and its set iin the heart of the west end. If you want something special all you need to do is ask.
C. C. L. M.
Great food, excellent service, and impressive timing from the kitchen! Very happy and would definitely go again!
T. S. L.
Residing in it's inconspicuous Covent Garden spot since 1977, Joe Allen has garnered a stellar reputation in London. Walk down it's dimly lit staircase, you'll discover the refined and relaxed atmosphere, complete with ambient lighting, hum of conversation and soothing piano playing that ooze class. Their menu is a perfect mix of hearty and healthy choices, with mains setting you back around £15.
Read more about Joe Allen over at Twenty Something London.
S. “. M.
Good value set menu as well as á la carte popular with theatre goers and tourists . Quick service and pleasant atmosphere.
H. K.
Great atmosphere. The food is good. If you're a veggie, ask for the green menu. Shame they're closing down. A London institution.
T. K.
Went for my graduation with family, in October. Great food, some of the best steak I’ve had, enjoyed by all
A. D.
Good service, nice atmosphere with a varied menu, good for pre theatre meal, 3.5-4 star quality food.

Have always loved this place, vibrant atmosphere, food has definitely got better since they moved to new premises, great place to meet with friends.
M. P.
very nice, great food, selection of beers and wines. topped off with a live pianist. What more could you ask for.
C. R.
Great atmosphere and good varied food. Nice choice of wine by the glass
C. G.
This was decent enough for the price, pre-theatre dinner was efficient and good. The service was as you expect, nothing special (interestingly they were all Spanish speaking!)
S. G.
Fantastic food and service.
J. J.
Excellent atmosphere . Lovely food.
The staff are really nice .
I'm so glad I went their .

M. D.
Good service and food. Couldn't fault it. Lovely atmosphere too although freezing whenever the door was opened
D. G.

M. V.
Absolutely loved it! Excellent food, great price, great service. Definitely going back.

We enjoyed the christmas menu, service wasnt rushed and was the perfect venue to catch up with two good american friends
N. M.
A great standard of thetreland.
E. M.
Fantastic service. The set menu was very reasonably priced and the food was delicious.
B. R.
The Joe Allen restaurant shows a lot of character. The Joe Allen special is something meaty that even Luis Suarez would be willing to sink his teeth into. I would definitely recommend this place to everyone at LFC, especially the world's best centre-half Dejan Lovren. I miss you all x
R.
Really fun, lively place. Menu selection not massive but food is excellent quality.
A. M. G.
It was very nice we had to go to a show after and they made sure we came on time and the food was very nice!!!
J. V.
Food is really just okay. But it's convenient if you're seeing a show. My hake was pretty fishy.
S. L.
Fantastic atmosphere lovely surroundings but Christmas set menu distinctly average the turkey was very dry and it was very expensive

Generally friendly with a good drinks list but the food was really disappointing. Worst burger ever.
