Reviews of Kate's Cafe and Restaurant
S. S.
I have been here a few times and recently it took quite long for food to come out. But the food is well worth it. Jollof cooked to perfection and the kelewele basket is delicious as always especially the crispy slight burnt bits. Highly recommend if you want to try Ghanaian cuisine.
Local area but difficult for parking.
G. B.
Amazing delicious. I've been coming here for years and the food is consistently great
S. A.
Great food. I got a takeaway last Friday, the prices are a bit higher than last year but the portions are fantastic. You can also mix and match items on the menu (even if it's not on the menu). Nice service. I ordered jollof with chicken (got 2 pieces), Jollof with chofi (got a separate container full of chofi), fufu and peanut soup and waakye with meat. All great.
J. C.
Best African restaurant in da ends by far. Really by far. Went to the venue and it's spotless and no lie all dese other places shutting for hygiene. Went there today and will go back tomorrow it was that good. Plus saving my poor walls from my take on jolloff
S. A.
The service is always terrible, but the food is incredible and keeps us coming back. The portions are big and although some of the dishes seem expensive, many can be ordered to be shared for the table.
G. A.
The BEST Ghanaian restuarant I’ve EVER been to. The jollof rice was SERIOUSSSS!!! The portion of food was just amazing. Classic Fanta from Ghana topped it all off. Aunty Kate is a genius! I will most definitely be coming back for more flavours! Whoever reads this, you NEED to visit Kate’s Cafe. You won’t be disappointed!
Y. M.
Great food but you have to wait a while, so don't go when you are too hungry. Also it can get very very busy. Looking forward to going again soon ☺️
N. M.
Food was delicious, it's a must go to experience some tasty Ghanaian food. Only four stars though as tables, floor and chairs where we sat were not cleaned. We also had to wait a while for our food but I guess that's because its so busy and popular. Definitely worth the wait however :)
D. B.
If you are a Ghanaian and you have not made a visit to Kate's Cafe you are missing out. This restaurant has the atmosphere and food to keep you coming back on a weekly basis. The food is more than authentic, you can taste the love and care that they put into the dishes. The prices and portion size at Kate's is also something that will keep you happy. The food is cooked fresh so the food doesn't come out to your table instantly and the servers can be lacking in some areas of customer service. However, I would definitely recommend that you should at least give Kate's a try because you won't be disappointed. I have eaten here several times and I have yet to be dissapointed.
R. A.
One of my favourite African restaurants in London tilapia on point though portions have reduced. Food is still good quality great kebabs. expected wait time atmosphere very nice and toilets very clean. Definitely A
W. D.
Great jollof, helpful staff and good atmosphere.
G. k.
Very tasty Ghanaian dishes and good customer service, I will definitely recommend it.
L. A.
Great place, family friendly environment to explore tasty dishes from Ghana, the food is delicious!! Highly recommended!! Take away or eat in, will recommend to reserve a table!
S. K.
I visited on a Thursday evening to have dinner with a friend, when we arrived we were welcomed into it's warm, cozy, cultural space, we informed them we would be eating in and took up seats in the centre of the restaurant with two menus. Similar to Nandos, once we had decided on our meal we went back up to the counter and made our orders and paid same time. We both ordered Fried Plantain, Tilapia and Jollof rice with 2 bottles of Supermalt. Before our meal arrived we were given bowls of warm water and soap which is to wash your hands after you have had your meal. When our meal had arrived it was delicious! But I would not reccomend for somebody that cannot stomach much pepper or chilli as it is very spicy and the portions are very large so if you want to take away you have to pay 50p per container. Overall the ambiance, food and service receives a 5/5 from me. It was very much enjoyed and I will be returning.
S. T.
Food was not fresh but still had nice flavours , the lady taking our order had a bit of an attitude.
A. Y.
Always nice to have some good authentic Ghanaian meals. Tsofi and fried yam always goes down a treat but the akonfem (guinea fowl) is also a big hit. The wait for the food is quite long though, and auntie still calculates everything in her head. Impressive, maybe, but for speed, better to just get a till/system in place to take orders etc
C. A.
My first time there. Bought fried yam and chofi. Loved it ❤
a. e.
We had a very Nice dîner. Service okay. Food was Nice and tast but the restaurant was not very clean i almost tripped on dirty tissus on the floor
M. S.
First time I visited and I will be back! Polite staff, big portions and I even took some home!
I ordered the talipia with kenkey and a side (massive) of joloff rice- what a tasty, filling and flavoursome meal!
I loved the Ghana Fanta they had too and the service was great with kindness and care and I cannot wait to return!
M. T. F. R.
Quality food I rate this place 9/10
z. у.
Amazing Ghanaian food but superlong wait, >40min for bean stew and chicken wings although to be fair it was a busy Saturday evening.
A. S.
Kate's serve lovely authentic Ghanaian food. Main meals are generous proportions. Servers are polite and helpful. Endless queues when we were there on a Sunday from midday.
s. m.
Nice atmosphere and good food definitely recommend.
S.
Very nice food, and very nice staff
S. B.
I go here at least once a week because the food is sooooo good. The portion sizes are good too. Definitely check your order if doing takeaway
P. T.
Loved the hot bofrots as we call them in Ghana.
A. A.
You queue to place your order and pay before you seat.
Make sure you get everything you ordered. Sometimes to omit an item paid for.
S. S.
Just came back from this restaurant and so glad that I experienced it I just had to leave a review. I got the kebabs for starter which were delicious, well recommended. The spinach stew and pounded yam, is a required taste. Great atmosphere but be warned the que never ends. Keep going guys 😋

Kate’s Kitchen literally saved the day for us, coming through with food for our wedding day with only 2 weeks’ notice! Not only was the food completely delicious but it was far, far better than we could have hoped for when trying to arrange something during 2020 for our wedding! Our plans had to completely change, this meant venue, which meant food! The staff at Kate’s kitchen, primarily we dealt with Emma and Sally, were so kind, gracious and their efficiency was beyond amazing. Even when on the day, there were a number of delays (the sun came out so we took some photos and then I surprised everyone with an icecream van!) and they rolled with it, making sure that as soon as we turned around ready, they were there with our next utterly scrumptious course.
Thank you so much, for everything. We are already recommending you to everyone who will listen.
J. S.
Fantastic food, friendly staff, happy to offer great suggestions on what to try if you have never had Ghanaian food before, and generous portions for the prices!
J.
My favorite African cuisine local to plaistow...
D. P.
Amazing food, friendly people, nice atmosphere and guess what? Sunday they have a Dj 😊 😍😍😍
E. A.
I like this place very much. I’m Togolese born with a Ghanaian parent and I sometimes miss the food.
If they added the home delivery option to their services it would make it perfect, and more during this Covid-19 time. I’m self isolating and can’t leave my home, but aching for some of your tasty dishes!
C. N.
Lovely place, lovely food. Waiting time a bit long but food makes up for it !
R. J.
I have heard very good recommendations for this place so my expectations were high. I had waakye with fish stew. I wasn't impressed. However I have never had waakye before and have nothing to compare it too. Next time I will try the jollof and fried fish because the pictures look great.
m. L.
Portions are amazing. And the food is outstanding. Customer service is A1. And the wait time is not bad at all. Especially considering it is fresh African food which sometimes takes long to cook. I highly recommend Kate's!
g. b.
I am not the type of person that would normally write a review about a restaurant unless I feel people need to know about the bad service or the good service and it's the latter one! This is the first time I heard about Kate's Cafe so I wanted to try it. I ordered food on the phone to take home. The lady that took my order was so friendly and helpful with my choice of food as it was my first time. When I got there I could tell that it was busy but It only took about 5min and I was served. I thought it would take ages before the food would come but to my surprise it came within the time frame they gave me so I was SHOCKED! When I got home and saw the Banku and Okro stew that they gave me I couldn't believe how nice it looked and they gave me plenty of mixed meet with crab which was amazing. The Banku itself was big so when I finished it I was so full up and the soup wasn't spicy at all so I could enjoy and taste the quality of the food unlike the usual spicy African food that you only taste pepper. Honestly this is the best Ghanaian restaurant in London I've been too and if you want quality food then please go there because its amazing. I will send all my family and friends there to eat from now on!! Mr George Boateng
S. T.
Customer service was great they were very friendly. We were served in around 15 mins. The food was delicious!!! So yummy 😋.I cannot wait to go again tbh.
J. B.
Meal:
Jeloff w Beef/Plantain/ x2 Fanta = £11.50
The food was genuinely 10/10
All staff wearing masks and gloves, they were kind, polite & friendly.
Although the staff member assumed I was there for English food as I'm white she was lovely and seated me immediately at a table with hand sanitisation lotions and creams.
As I was the first customer of the day I only had to wait between 15-20 minutes which I had a large screen TV to keep me company as well as my own devices if necessary.
The staff member prepared me a cutlery plate with napkins whilst I was waiting.
The food came and the rest is history. This is my new place for Ghanaian food, no more Tasty restaurants for me.
I'm surprised the reviews aren't at LEAST 4.5 on here but I'm hoping over time Kates restaraunt will get the scores it rightfully deserves.
S. A.
Fantastic Ghanaian food, cooked with love.
K. D.
Have had many great experiences in this place and the food is always delicious and service great. I've enjoyed every moment of my time at Kate's and try to go whenever I can for their lovely food and service
B. D. K.
Fantastic place to eat or take away. Delicious Ghanaian dishes
D. H.
A friend of mine took me to Aunty Kate's in 2016 for the 1st time and I've been eating there ever since I never knew this restaurant existed so close to my house. The food is DELICIOUS, and prepared with Love... I have so many favourite dishes I can't even choose...everytime I go I'd order my usual plus try something new , My Son Loves the Tsofi & Bofloat. The staff are always very friendly and knowledgeable ;)
Thank you ... with Love
P.s I'll be popping in today
M. J.
1st Review.
African restaurant/cafe. Often busy but the food is great and well worth the wait.
This review is written 3 years after my 1st. It seems strange to come to Kates and find it empty as there's usually such a buzzy lively atmosphere...I'm having a takeaway tonight.
I've eaten here since it was a small takeaway (which used to be sited opposite it's current location) Kate's has maintained the same high standards and generous portions over the years. Love the food 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙋🏾♀️
D. M.
Great service, nice scenery, friendly faces, tasty food, good prices and they actually have a card machine.
Went here for the first time in May 2018 and was pretty happy with what this place was all about. I recommend this restaurant.
I would've given this 5 stars, however, like most African restaurants, the service was a little slow but the food is worth the wait.
C. Z.
Had the peanut soup. Delicious. The place felt a little dark and different to the pictures, not sure if it's because I went at lunch time. The front of house could do with some improvement but I will still go back to eat there again. Great food.
E. M.
Very good portions of food. Service is timely too. Good seating.
S. W.
Really like the fish, fried yam and plantain dish from here. I got it as a take away and it came nicely packaged and presented. Only thing that I wasn’t a fan of was that the gills are left in the fish - would prefer for it to be taken out as part of the cleaning the fish process.
K. D.
Their food was nice but they took too long to serve us.
S. A.
The staff are nice, and your food is always ready on the dot. They follow the government's guidelines which is amazing.
F. M.
Kate's cafe provided food for a corporate diversity event and very much stole the show!
Every aspect of their service, from the spot on time delivery to presentation and authentic flavour, was without fault.
Would use again without hesitation.
S. G.
3 🌟 because I can't fault the food, I enjoyed my meal. However the service was lacklustre, long time waiting for the waitress and menu, more time spent looking for her to take orders. There was stock on the tables. No video or audio entertainment. Its an ok place. If you are new to the menu I'd advise you ask for description otherwise you'd be lost.
R. T.
Friendly Ghanaian Restaurant for family and friends - Jollof rice is amazing 👏👏
J. A.
Their services are very good and the place is very clean. Good food and nice people
J.
Whenever I organise a party I order my food from Kate's cafe. I'm very pleased with their services and the food is totally AMAZING!!! The best Ghanaian restaurant in town. Well done Auntie Kate, auntie Hannah and all the staff.
E. Y.
The food is good but the service is really slow.
F. J.
I ordered the chocolate waffles and he got the breakfast sandwich. for a place that's not even a bbq spot, the pork in his sandwich was better than most bbq places we have even been to!! I'm usually a more savory type of gal, but the waffles were calling to me and I regret to say that none survived.
D. X.
Lovely atmosphere, food was authentic, excellent potions. Overall I will recommend to anyone looking for authentic west African/Ghanaian dishes. My favourite spot to eat this year
B. O.
Neat, cosy, smart West African restaurant on Balaam Road, East London. I was taken there by a Ghanaian friend for an early dinner Friday. The staff are polite and attentive and food cake promptly. I had fufu with their signature okro soup. The food was delicious. I shall surely be visiting again to test the jollof rice 😀
E. A.
Lovely restaurant. Kate's has kept on with her excellent service and food for years now and keeps getting better. will def recommend. The environment is very cozy too
J. A.
Great selection of Ghanaian dishes although there was not great table service and the menus had seen through a lot. Lovely selection of drinks including Fanta and alvaro 😍😁.
S.
Fantastic traditional Ghanaian restaurant and food with fantastic and friendly staff
C. T.
The food Is really good !!! The staff is very welcoming and friendly!!! Although it is a busy spot, they will make sure that you're satisfied !!! Recommended 👍🏽👍🏻👍👍🏾
P. S.
Where the food is absolutely delicious especially the tantalising tsofi. Their lackadaisical service during busy times is the reason for the three stars. On some days you can wait up to an hour for your food whilst watching others who came after you get theirs before you. 🙃 They hardly answer the phone. So if anyone is looking for a job as a waitress and looking to make a difference at Kate's cafe. Please apply. They need you. In fact we all need YOU! So we can get our food on time. Service is ok when it's not busy though.
E. A.
I go here often for my warm African meals. There is a great ambience that makes you feel at home. Smiling staff and quick turnaround time.
M. A.
I have always been promoting this resturant until recently had some food poisoning from their tilapia which wasn't nice. In all in all their food is very nice and service is good just need to step it up a notch by serving fresh food.
T.
Nice food, although the tsofi isn't always fresh. Eat in service can be quite long compared to take away but the vibe is worth it if you have time.
P. S.
I had the fried yam it was really tasty and the portion were massive man..... My friend had the Jellof rice he said it was nice...Yhe only downside is dat we had to wait bare long for our dishes....and also pay first b4 we got u meal...But still i will breeze there again....
S. F.
One of the best Ghanaian restaurants in London. The food is great, the price is great and the portions are great but the service is rubbish. You spend 1hr just waiting.
D. J.
Visited Kate’s after work for a home cooked meal and it didn’t disappoint... varied menu and you can order items not even on the menu which ensures you always have what you want.
Starter - Tsofi platter and kebab (3 pieces) ... Meat was tender and opened up our palettes.
Main... Nkatekwan with fish and meat, red red with rice and extra plantain.
Portion size was like being at home ... it didn’t disappoint and overall value was spot on with a top to our waiter. Wait time was just right not too long and allowed for conversation i.e. 10 mins for starters and mains followed 3/4 into starters finishing. Ambiance was relaxing and a friendly atmosphere and nice to observe a black business that catered to all creeds with a healthy take away service along with seated patrons.
M. O.
The place is quite nice
Could use some improvements here and there but all-around cute place
I like the plates a lot lol
The food was good the waakye was really good the jollof I had was a little burned but still good.
Stuff is really nice
It just takes quite some time for you to get your food

We live outside London, all the way in Bedford, but we travel to London often and love going to Kate's. We've been there about 10 times now over 3 years & the food is amazingly delicious every single time. The customer service is also very good. We have no complaints whatsoever about this great restaurant. We've been to many west African restaurants, but Kate's tops all of them by far. If only we lived closer so we could eat there more often.

I enjoyed the light soup and fufu so much!!!

Freshly cooked meals. Kate's never disappoints, always on point. It's honestly the place to go with friends and eat your heart out. I just love the freshly cooked meals and the friendly staffs. They make Enish and other near by restaurants look stupid... YEAH I SAID IT AND ITS TRUE
