Reviews of Lao Café
M. T. (.
Came here for a late lunch and left very satisfied. The hot pot makes for great comfort food, the pork neck was seasoned and cooked perfectly too. Very authentic- would definitely come again.
S. O.
A bustling cafe that offers an assortment of authentic and delicious Laotian plates. I believe most of the dishes offered are of the Lao Isan regions which typically border neighbouring countries, which is likely why I was surprised at the level of spiciness! I will definitely visit again but ask for level 1 spice.
P. J.
This is the place to be for spicy food that is bursting with flavours. Come in and have a taste and I can assure that you will be addicted. For those who are not so fond of spiciness, you can definitely let the staff know your tolerance level and they will adjust accordingly. Book in advance if you don’t want to wait in line during peak period.
O.
Authentic and delicious Laos/Thai food. Food can be quite spicy by default so , if you cannot handle handle too much spice , let the staff know. My favorite was the liver spicy salad and the papaya salad. Would go back for sure
M. C.
Really delicious food. Warning: food was really really spicy. We asked for level 4 spiciness and was already burning, you can go up to level 10.
M. M.
Nice little Thai place the menu is fairly small but makes up for it in flavour. Worth a visit if your in the area.
L. T.
Wow, the cafe was amazing truly authentic. My Partner is from Khon Kaen where the style of cooking is the same and she was also in agreement how good the cafe was. Friendly and helpful staff. We cant wait to be back in London and go again
K. T.
Love the foods here. But, I when I ask to make papaya salad with out sugar or no sweet and it come out always sweet 😭
M. C.
Make sure to arrive with time no time pressure as the speed of service is relaxed. That aside the food was delicious. Sweet, salty, spicy and savoury. Make sure you instruct them on the level of heat you prefer. We had the pork neck, bamboo shoots, Thai style papaya salad and whole grilled sea bass. The food was authentic and rich in flavour and I will be returning frequently.
E. S.
Not very adventurous so we just got the grilled pork neck and fish and both were seriously great!! Grilled sticky rice gd too.
T. S.
Sooo goood! Just like in Thailand…maybe even better! A bit pricey but worth it when I’m craving some authentic spicy, intensely flavored Thai/Lao food. 😍
L. C.
Best Laos/ Thai food I ever had !!!! The ice tea milky flavour is just the best to end this amazing meal. !!!! Thank you so much !!!
N. Y.
the spicy sour pork rib hot pot is godly. best i have tasted. the ribs are succulents and the spices just keeps you going. They recommended to share the soup but i’m sure once you had it you just want to keep it to yourself.
S. J. (.
TOO AMAZING AUTHENTIC NORTH-EAST THAI FOOD!! They look amazing, they taste amazing like OH MY GOD, I just wanna live next to the restaurant. 😂😂
Grilled pork neck (ko moo yang) is highly recommend for ppl who cant eat something spicy. But if you do love spicy, you would definitely love spicy soup with pork (tom zap kradook aon) cuz it was the best soup I ever had in many years tbh. And somtam ofc! Dont you ever missed that dish, they served freaking delicious somtam here. So make sure to order that!
Y. U.
The taste was authentic Thai and delicious; However, There was limited choices of menu. Price was quite high compare to size of dishes (small dish). Service was average. Some staffs look asia but they aren’t Thai or Laos. A Thai man staff was nice.
T. E.
Love trying different places to eat and the idea of Lao cafe from items on it’s menu appealed to my try something new theory. The food has immense flavour and waitress checked how foot we would like dishes as some can be quite spicy.
Loved the concept of sharing and picking at bits as it was bought up, it comes out at different times.
Really recommend the pork neck grilled meat
L. K. (.
The best Thai Northeastern foods I’ve ever tried in London. Ideal location right in Covent Garden. The taste is authentic Thai so you can request if you want less spicy 🌶🌶 Friendly and very polite staffs :) Definitely will come back again!
A. D.
We enjoyed our meal with friends here very much. The food tasted exactly as it does in the Isan region of Thailand - quite remarkably so!
M. S.
It was my time trying cuisine from Laos. We tried Sai Gork Lao (fermented sausages), Sai Oua (herbal northern sausages), Om Hed Bai Ya Nang (Mushroom curry with Ants eggs), Pad Mee Lao (Prawn Noodle), Nam ToK Kor Moo (Pork neck) and Bee Gai Tod (chicken wings). All were really tasty and had distinct combinations of flavours. Service was excellent and friendly.
D. 9.
Pros:
-Very flavorful sauces and dressings, with changeable levels of spice
-Very nice atmosphere
Cons:
- Not great service.
- Bit pricey, especially if you compare with portion size.
B. X.
It’s understandable that the taste is off for some, but I love it. Balanced and right amount of spice, sourness, and freshness. A good place to try before taking a journey towards South Asia.
We ordered a big sharing plate, with grill, salad and soup. The taste is just right, and full of adventure if I may add.
F. J. B.
First time having Lao food and it’s unique and delicious. Highly recommend this place.
J. N.
We haven’t stumbled upon many Lao restaurants in London before. Lao Cafe was quite authentic and the food was tasty. We had the Laos sausage, Thai style papaya salad and grilled pork neck - everything was good but pork neck was probably my fave. The salad was really spicy even though we got mild and I would have preferred if the papaya was sliced a little thinner. Would definitely come back to try more of the menu.
J. H.
Tasty food! Friendly service. They have a version of Thai iced tea if you like that (if you're not sure - try it!) And the pork was perfectly seasoned and prepared. Chicken wings super crispy! The rice comes in a banana leaf which gives the rice a very nice subtle flavour.
J. H.
First time trying Lao cuisine and we were very satisfied. Our dishes were jee moo (grilled pork skewers), jee kor moo (pork neck), pla pao gluer, puu papaya salad and beek gai tod (chicken wings) to share between three people. Pork was very tender and these have to be the best wings I’ve eaten in London! The pla pao was grilled just right. We were able to secure a table within 10minutes of turning up on a Friday evening. Service was pleasant and prompt.
P. L.
Great food; their spicy sausage and larb are delicious. Go there early as their tables were full by 17h15 on a Saturday!
K. H.
Isaan and Laos food here is amazing. I love grill pork neck and grill sea bass the most. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Highly recommended!
I. W.
Delicious Thai-style dishes. Very very hot and spicy. All my pictures contain locations. If you would like to know where I took my pictures, just save them and see the pictures' info. Enjoy!
h.
Absolutely my favourite authentic Laos food. Really love their som tum/tum taad. And the price is really worth a place to come back many more times.
D. R.
Had the lunchtime special, chicken and butternut curry with rice and salad. Delicious, quite spicy, so bear that in mind. Free refills on sparkling water. Suitable for individual lunchtime eating as well as couples or groups. Large step prevents easy access for wheelchairs as well as no access to same level toilet.
M. “. K. A.
Very authentic!
The food was amazing.
S. K.
Authentic Laotion food with brilliant service in a relaxed atmosphere.
t. p.
Were there several time during the past few months as it is the only place in London who serve this style of food ( eastern thai food). What u can missed is the ice cream with bread.
S. S.
Authentic taste of Thai food, great service and fair price!! Although food serves in a small plate but it’s enough for sharing.
Y. S.
Chicken curry was absolutely delicious. Right amount of heat and great balance of flavours. The chicken was perfectly tender and juicy and the large variety of mushrooms was delightful. The aubergine salad was well balanced. The prawns in all of the dishes were fresh and cooked just enough (not tough at all). We enjoyed the prawn vermicelli as well. All the dishes came out hot and service was prompt. Will be back!
J.
Wow - had lunch here today, it's just opened and has some fantastic food. Really recommend the fish (grown in London) and the fried insects! Finished with coconut ice cream - great location, great ambience and great food that you won't find anywhere else in London.
H. S. M.
Authentic Laos food. Amazing flavours and has the authentic flavours. Worth paying for, the grilled fish is amazing!
S. S.
Super Amazing Thai food... I forgot the name of the dish but there was this hotpot soupy dish that was delicious and the papaya salad....the food was not very chilly small seating area quite cozy and quick service...not very far away from the station
k. S.
Delicious Thai food in London that really close to the real taste of Thai !. we’re surely going back again whenever we visit london. Really enjoyed here 🥰
B. C.
Delicious, spicy, great spot for lunch during these cold winter days.
Nice decor with lights. Was not very busy so service was quite quick.
Keen to try again.
J. T.
Food was amazing but pricey and very few options provided.
K. C.
Really delicious food akin to Northern Thai cuisine. Spicy and sour flavours are the main protagonist, well balanced so you can still taste the other herbs and protein. One of my favourites in London.
K. K.
Super authentic Lao restaurant; It felt I was traveling back to Laos...!
service was lovely and the food was simply amazing! Lao sausage sai oua, pork salad laab moo, tasty pork neck, papaya salad thai style, soup...! Just be careful on spiciness levels! :)
And they have durian ice cream?! Love the place!

Recently visited London from Bangkok Thailand over the Easter holidays.
My family and friends were looking for an early evening meal and my kids especially were missing food that tasted from home. As we were in the Covent Garden area we headed to Lao Cafe which my sister in law had recommended.
Despite the name of the restaurant much of the menu is made up of food that would not look out of place in a Thai (Isaan - northeastern) restaurant.
The menu is pretty petite but all of the dishes we tasted were genuine flavours you'd find in SEA and well executed.
As I said the taste is genuine and so can get spicy - you can always ask them to turn it down with the number of chilli (usually we stick with only one or two) but the food they serve would not be out of place if you bought it from a street stall in Bangkok (this is not Thai or Lao-lite food that other places serve).
Of what we ate I'd recommend the Moo Nam Tok (sp) and the similarly flavoured minced Larb duck version. The papaya salad was beautifully balanced in flavours successfully balancing the holy trinity of sweet, sour and spice. Although for myself I'd preferred if the papaya had been pulverized a bit more so it had a little less bite to it but I was the only one who grumbled.
The poussin was also tasty but it's a two person portion and we didn't think it was vfm to order another. I understand the reasoning behind poussin but I think if they sourced fresh free range chickens they could get similar succulence and flavours but also more meat which could be easily shared among more people.
But please don't let those minor gripes make you give it a miss. We all enjoyed the food and the service and probably the best benchmark for authenticity was that both our young boys ate their food without a grumble and asked for seconds.
J. W.
Food was good and tasty. Thank you Yui (lovely waitress) for the professional service. One star less because of Tum Paa Raa. It was too sweet.
E. R.
Lovely atmosphere, great service and delicious food. Our first time at Lao Cafe and trying the cuisine, and it was a great evening!
L. L.
Authentic Thai food recommended by a Thai friend. Some dishes were pretty spicy and I specially loved the fried sea bass! Yum!
G. C.
I think foods quality and taste aren't the same as before. I think it us under new management. Previous chef had left . That’s why taste had dropped. A little bit disappointed.
M. K.
I discovered this place by accident but the food was quite delicious. The menu consists mostly of small plates to share. The mango salad and aubergine salad were both very good. The chicken curry was flavourful and unlike Indian curries, it comes in a clear broth and the chicken comes with the bones (so slightly more complicated to eat).
The place seems to be frequented by what seemed to be South Asians (Laotian?) people so they must be doing something right. Service was friendly but a bit slow. Prices were reasonable for the location.
W. L.
I love the chargrilled pork neck from Lao Cafe and their sticky rice was really good to have with the meat dish too! Though other meat dishes like grilled beef needs to be more tender, the one we had was grilled perfectly but the meat itself was very chewy. Their homemade iced tea was pretty good too!
S. T.
Fab food served in a friendly atmosphere. Loved the service and we were really happy with our selection. Some dishes are really spicy but you can dial back the chillies if you ask. Particularly enjoyed the papaya salad and pork skewers.
M. L.
Back to Lao cafe twice during our weekend stay. Food ( the grills) is so good! Small dish though.
G. G.
Best papaya salad I never had in Europe, very close to Thai taste. Good service too.
a. p.
simply the best food we ate during our 2 week trip in UK. i eat southeast asian food almost on daily basis, so i know a really good one. all the dish we ordered, nothing disappointed. even the ice tea lemon tasted better there.
updated Aug 2017: just arrived in London again and this is the first place we visit. as good as expected, satisfied!
S. S.
Everything i order was amazing .... cant believe its so yummy ! Feel like i am back eating this in Thailand at my home town (North/east Thailand) ..... hmmmm its just amazing !!!!!!!!!
S. M.
A little gem. Authentic northern Thai/Laos cuisine. Cafe atmosphere rather than fine dining as you might expect. Food was excellent and already thinking about what to try on return... and fortunately bugs are optional! Friendly staff. Not busy on our lunchtime visit despite close location to busy Covent Garden, but mostly Thai's/Asians using so that must tell something. Some extra seating downstairs. Clean toilet facilities available.
P. S.
As a Thai, I guarantee you great authentic taste of Esarn food. Be careful with spiciness as it is how we actually have it back home. Not for the faint-hearted!
Good experience but pretty pricy.
F. M.
Hectic but charming cafe serving Laotian food - expect bugs and fermented sausages on the menu. We loved it, but you may have to queue
m. y.
Excellent Excellent I lived in Thailand for over 10 years and this is the best North East Thai food in UK by a mile
J. A.
First time trying Laos cuisine and really enjoyed it! Full of flavour and the ingredients seem very fresh. There was quite a bit of grisle on the pork but apart from that, the food was great.
l.
Amazing exotic spicy food in this gem nearby Covent garden. Fast service, great prices and decent amount of food per dish. Totally recommend.
N. C.
In my mind the taste of food it is not ok for me because it is too sweet. Also pricey if comparing with another restaurant.
M. R.
The only Lao place in London is a little disappointing. They don't take reservations and there are not many tables so you are likely to have to wait to be seated.
The food is tasty and interesting, but it is incredibly spicy and fairly small portions. We had been to Laos recently and expected the heat so asked for mild, but it was still way too spicy and we heard other diners saying similar things. I would advise them to tone it down for falangs unless they ask for heat.
The worst thing however is the price - ewch main is about £10 and you need at least two to feel remotely satisfied. I am fine with paying for the more exotic dishes and complicated creations, but one dish was basically a small pile of fried noodles with veg which should not cost £5 let alone £10, even in Covent Garden. We had beerlao which is a lovely beer, but £5 for 330ml is very steep. I'm not expecting 20p a pint like in Laos, but something a little more reasonable would have convinced me to have another.
Overall ptobably worth a visit if you have been to Laos and want to relive your experience, but I wouldn't go again or recommend other people to go.

Good test and Good price

Lao Café is a really nice place to eat Thai cuisine in London. Highly recommended!
E. D.
Great option for Laotian food. The som tum was tasty and the mushroom stew was nice and hearty. Plenty of options for vegetarian or pescatarian. Cozy atmosphere and attentive service.
C. D.
Ate here with a friend, food was very authentic. Great taste, fresh flavours. Recommended for something different
D. H.
Food was authentic and delicious. Given the pricing I would expect the portion sizes to be bigger
T. T.
Really Recommended!! Not expensive all 5 dishes only 60 GBP
F.
Delicious, spicy, authentic food
M. C.
Love this restaurant they serve simple foods, in an easy+ relax atmosphere but their foods are flavoursome 😍👌👍
G. D.
Very popular with Thai and S.E. Asian diners
P. B.
Really lovely food and service, enjoyed the combination of flavours going on and was unlike anything I have tried before. Would recommend the pork neck and Sausage for some really unique flavour combinations.
G. K.
Delicious Laotian food- great place for Laab! Lovely atmosphere and the staff are great, very attentive.
A. W.
Good food, good prices, just missing a bit more variety in meat/vegetarian options
J. B.
Amazing authentic loatian & thai food. Lovely staff. Highly recommended
C. V.
Authentic food with legit spicyness!
O. J.
If you're a Thai person missing food from home, this is the place to go. The papaya salad, tom zaap, northern sausages, grilled pork neck, namtok, fried chicken wings – everything just hits the spot.
E.
Delicious food. Lots of spicy options. Staff were very friendly and service was quick.
D. J.
Excellent. Get the pork neck, it’s fabulous.
P.
Superb Laotian food. It is a 'fancied' up a little when compared to what I had in Laos but it makes it better
J. S.
Delectable Lao and Thai food. Good service. Recommended.
j. g.
Really fantastic little restaurant, that successfully recreated the tastes I experienced whilst in Laos! Staff were really attentive and friendly too.
М. F.
I love it good taste north thai & Lao food
c. k.
We loved your amazing stir-fry. We realy loved our visit and your massive painting.See you Soon
J. D.
Tasty food. Small portions and very spicy. Nice furniture.
C. Y.
Nice food! Very authentic!! I dare you to handle their spicy food 🌶
J. C.
The steak wasn’t good. The best thing was their chicken wings.
C. J.
Mostly enjoyed our meal, but thought the menu could have done with further description of the dishes
L. A.
Food was tasty but expensive for what you get..£14 hot pot which was just some bones..poor value for money.
t. r.
Jee kho moo is excellent!! But sticky rice is so so so hard and dry! Tum tad isn't that good, only spicy and sour
x.
Wonderfully authentic food that really brought back memories of Lao. Love this place! Will be going back soon to sample the rest of the menu!
E. P.
We were able to walk in around 6:15, by 6:30 there was a queue. Got to sit by the window, which was atmospheric and warm. The hot pot was very spicy, in a good way, would definitely suggest sticky rice with it to absorb a little of the heat. The portion size for the sausages is excellent as a sharing starter for 2. Perfect food for a winter's evening. You may need to wave at the staff to get the bill when the restaurant is full.
J. A.
Recommended Papaya Salad, pork ribs, nod and sticky rice.
E.
Flavorful dishes, great service, but the portion is very tiny for the price paid (priced as a main, but portioned as a starter).
M. H.
Smiling staff and a menu which gets the imagination going. Really liked the pork neck with sticky sauce. The other dishes included fried chicken which was unfortunately tasteless, a curry which was more of a soup and a salad so spicy it became inedible. I like and can handle spice, but not the straight up eat a chilli variety. Photo of a crab, which gave flavour to the salad (until the taste buds are overwhelmed with heat!).
K. W.
Yummy spicy foods for reasonable prices
Not crowded and lovely decors
T. S.
Lao Café serves truly authentic Lao and Thai dishes. As a Thai person, this restaurant provides excellent food even compared to restaurants in Thailand. Dishes are well prepared and cooked with traditional methods, although some ingredients may vary due to import restrictions. Highly recommended for authenticity. An important note: many dishes are very spicy, so tell the waiter if you prefer less or no chili.
J. S.
Have never had Laotian food but every dish here was fantastic. Very much central London Covent Garden prices, and would seem pricey for what is simple and authentic home food - the cost of taking authenticity to London. Especially enjoyed the pork neck salad and the fried vermicelli. High recommend trying both those dishes.
m. d.
This i such a great place, not sure where else you can get Lao food in London and its so tasty, fresh, well priced, love this place
C. O.
If you miss authentic Thai food, please come here. It is such a great place to eat Thai food here. But the store a bit small, if you come here more than 6 or 8 people. Please make sure to do the reservation before you go.
A. V.
Excellent food. The mushroom curry was delicious
M. C. (.
Food was okay, good atmosphere with average London price.
M. M.
Lao Cafe serves typical Lao and north eastern Thai food in a small cosy restaurant. The food is very good, small portions and a little pricey but worth it.
Only downside was the service. Friendly but shoddy and lazy. Tried to order for 20 minutes before we literally had to grab someone, same when it came to paying.
Go for the food and you will enjoy.
A. A.
We went at the end of August for dinner before a show nearby at Adelphi Theatre. The food was pretty good, I would say fairly authentic (we had travelled through Laos before). The only thing is the portions could be a bit larger but the flavour was great. Our kids enjoyed the fish but couldn't partake too much in the spicy foods.
J. M.
Original Esarn Food available in London.. love the food
C. B.
Visited as part of London Restaurant Festival. A sweetcorn dessert was served here which I could palatable but not great. My dining companions found it barely edible at all. I have been to Laos and didn't really like the food there so I guess it is authentic in that respect. I don't think I'll be heading back.
O. S.
The restaurant full of oriental clientele should be the testimony to the place's authenticity. But the menus are quite pricy for the portion you get, and the bill goes up quickly if you order several dishes as their menu recommands.
The menu may sound similar to that of Vietnamese or Thai, but be prepared to the quite different flavour in actuality. They are much earthier with lots of fermented fish and other seafood sauces.
Good place if you want to experience authentic Lao cuisine, but not if you're after a care free light lunch.
R. S.
Crowded and bustling, this was our first visit and it won't be our last. Food just as in Laos, my laab spicy and fresh, chicken soup just right. Sticky rice, not steamed, authentic. Loved it.
J. S.
Best Thai/Laos food in London. The atmosphere is perfect and price is affordable. One of the best options along with a great dosa place nearby that offer affordability, great food and enjoyable ambience. Almost every dish is brilliant and I couldn't choose a favourite
R. K.
Enjoyed the food. Downstairs was a bit hot and had very poor ventilation. Check out the bugs on sale too.
I. L.
The food is really good if you are open to have flavours your tounge has never tasted before. Sweet, salty, sour, spicy etc
The fried cricket n silk worms were surprisingly good (the fried bug as side dish), it has similar qualities to shrimp head paste with deep umami flavour.
If you cant eat spicy food, let them know as the food pack a big punch.
C. H.
We enjoyed the food there a lot. However, the pickled crab salad was so spicy for us even we ordered it mild for chili. The deserts choices were limited ice cream only so we did not try it.
B. M.
Good atmosphere, delicious food, kind service. We asked for the spiciness to be mild thinking we could handle it, be aware it is still very spicy. But so tasty it did not bother me. Will definitely go here again!
L. Z.
This place has potential. The food is different and exotic. I have been here 3 times. First time, it was quiet and service was good. Second time, I went for lunch with colleagues and my dish came when they nearly finished their dish. Third time was with friends for dinner and the service was poor - slow and very minimal effort! Go for the food, but don't expect much from the service.
B. C.
Small homely restaurant serving great Laotion food. Very different to the popular Asian Fusion high Street restaurant. Been here about 3 times in as many months as I love the flavours of the food here. Portions are a bit small, but bursting with flavor.
P. L.
Before was many more thai lao in menu but now not too much choice,it ok but before was great.
S. C.
Cosy little spot with a good selection of dishes. Will be back to try the other dishes!
R.
Selection of dishes was small, but that actually made choosing easier, and it was very good! Staff were friendly and polite and the food was served quite quickly. Perhaps a fraction pricey especially the sticky rice portions which were very small for £3.
K. F.
Amazing fresh food, never had anything I didn't like! Lots of spice for those who like it, and I took a friend is isn't keen on spice and the staff/chefs went out of their way to recommend and make something non-spicy for him. Love it here!
L. J.
Ohhhh...definitely a must-try! The dishes were authentic! We had the sticky brown rice, bamboo shoots salad, grilled poisson, and many more....the price is reasonable too! We were so lucky to get a table right away!
N. J.
Spicy and delicious! This was my second visit to Lao Cafe, however this time I was with a group of colleagues. Making the reservation was simple and the table was set-up perfectly, however service was disappointing. The hostess we had was rude and unfriendly. When a colleague noted her salad had seafood and that she was allergic to it, our hostess became defensive and blamed us for not making it clear in the beginning - yet the menu is very minimal and not all ingredients are listed - this was especially the case with my colleague's chicken dish which came with a side salad that happened to have shrimp. The situation could have been handled in a much more pleasant manner, especially if they want to retain customers. Individual bills would also be a welcome improvement.
H. R.
Located a short walk from embankment or Charing Cross or covent garden this restaurant was easy to find. Lots of other bars and restaurants near by. Arrived at 5:50pm and the place filled up quickly. Service was fine and food was nice. Found the papaya salad chilli a little too hot but curry (has bones) and pork neck both great. £60 for 2 people including drinks. They take books for over 6 people.
3.75 stars.
S. E.
great authentic food at a reasonable price with great service
Z. W.
Quite an underwhelming experience - food had some hints of brilliance that were unfortunately hidden by 1) small portion sizes, 2) cold and aloof staff and 3) overpriced dishes.
(One highlight was that one of our dishes was served in a cooking pot that looked like it was from IKEA - rather than the nice clay pot it was supposed to come in. Staff said they ran out of clay pots. We had to tell them we were fine with waiting a bit more to have the clay pot rather than eat a £13 soup from a dank IKEA pot)
If you’ve had Thai food - stick with it, you’re not missing out. At least if I eat this in Laos I’m paying 1/5 of the price.
It barely passes the 60% mark because of the uniqueness of the flavors, which saved it. I said uniqueness though, not much in actual tastiness. Might just be my personal opinion though.
V. F.
Amazing food! This restaurant is a real find.
a.
Oh My God!! Found a place which the wife from Isan Thailand loves, plus they sell Beer Lao. Had all the top dishes, yes we had Som Tam too, perfect. A point to mention the place has only a few tables so you better book. We will be back again. Lovely people working their. Top Bananas!!!
I. M.
Food was really nice and we would probably eat there again. Just watch out for the service charge, 12.5% is pretty high. When we said we did not want to pay it we were asked why and given a dirty look, made us feel slightly uncomfortable. We should have the choice to leave a tip or not which we did. :)
P. B.
What a terrific spot. The food is spicy, with amazing depth and different enough to make me look forward to my next trip there. The som tom Lao style was amazing with a great umami hit that you don't normally get in Thai versions and the mushroom soup was just incredible.

Best authentic Isaan and Lao food in London
N. G.
Unbelievably tasty food at what is apparently London's only restaurant dedicated to Laotian cuisine. We visited on a whim (it doesn't take reservations) and were delighted by the tasty fermented sausage and spicy salads. Don't worry is some of the dishes sound unusual, everything we had was delicious. Only one note of caution - it's possible to tailor the chilli levels of some dishes and I'll admit that the medium was hitting the top of my capsaicin tolerance!
I. M.
Small, cost place to eat, good food, great for sharing, nice spice! Worth a visit...
p. l.
Food was nice but 1.5 hr in the waitress just put the bill on the table as a sign requesting us to pay up and leave, at the same time took our unfinished dish of chicken wings away without even asking.
It’s okay if you want a quick meal and not fuss about service but it certainly does not justify the 12.5% charge.
S. S.
Nice Thai Isaan-Lao gastronomical restaurant in the heart of London. The meal can be very spicy sometimes, you might have to specify what level of spicy you want. There are also some vegetarian dishes. Tum taard is highly recommend. Nice waitresses. You might have to wait to be seated. The price is a bit expensive. Be careful, the price in menu does not include service charges
C. K.
First time trying Laotian food and it was pretty awesome. Staff were great. The pork neck was ridiculously good. They even have insects if you're feeling adventurous
A. Z.
Very strong and rich flavoured food. Loved the spicy and sour soup, grilled fish and the sticky rice. Great atmosphere, fast and pleasant service.
And sometimes you could get pad kra pao at lunch specials.
E. K.
Just okay, liked their brown sticky rice. Their grilled pork was undercooked, and they also forgot some of our orders. their nam tok was pretty dry as well, the waiters looked pretty grumpy the entire service so was a bit odd
P. S.
Mae tow (grandma) would approve! Thai tea is amazing! Service was awesome and the Tom som Lao was spicy enough to make you cry. You know it’s good when there is real crab and Thai elephants. Highly recommend!
R. F.
We have not been disappointed yet. The food is consistently great and authentic (my wife has been to Lao and she is very impressed). The place is a bit small (although there is space downstairs) and I hope they open up more restaurants. Brilliant.
J. L.
Went with a group of five, the food was ok, but didn't seem to hang together particularly well as a meal. Portions were a little insubstantial. The bugs were interesting! Service and venue was good.
M. T.
The food was quite spicy yet really tasty. We really enjoyed rib soup and som tam. The staff was friendly and helpful. There is a live Instagram "like" counter, that will update the number of Instagram "likes" in front of your eyes. The location was great, right in the middle of Soho.
R. B.
Excellent food, friendly staff, central location, well worth visiting.
R. F.
Came here on Wednesday night with my lovely girlfriend. Deliciously Spicy, loved the sausages and tum taad. Great friendly service as well. Really recommend it especially if you like the hotter side of life!
L. H.
There was a bit of miscommunication about items on the menu. The medium papaya salad was so hot that I couldn't taste anything and the crab meat was in two small crabs rather than fresh meat as i thought she had said.
B. W.
It was alright. We asked for mild spice and it was nuclear, like unbearably hot our mouths were in pain we couldn't hack it. So we just had it without putting the sauce on and after said it was a bit hot (should have done this during tbf) and they said just ask for no spice next time. Imo the level we were at should have been hotter than what I would say was 'hot', ah well
C. M.
Very friendly and cute place with well presented food. Unfortunately I couldn't really get on board with most of the flavour and food combos. The ice cream was amazing tho! And the pork shoulder (or neck?).
T. H.
Perfect, authentic, full of flavour. Totally a South East Asian gem in London.
R. “. M.
One of my most favourite Thai restaurants in London!
J. R.
Amazing food, friendly staff. Hot pot is spicy, so don't opt for a lot of chillies, unless you like it really hot. That said, everything was amazing and freshly made at a reasonable rate.
B. X.
I popped by to Laos Cafe in Covent Garden for a late lunch last week and it was pretty amazing! Being Thai and having lived in Thailand for nearly 3 decades, I am very familiar with Thai-Laos food. I ordered "Larb Ped" (spicy minced duck salad with roasted rice) and sticky rice wrapped in pandan leaves. The dish was like an explosion of flavours in my mouth--very delicious, satisfying and authentic! (I give them extra point for making the duck skin crispy).
Definitely a must-visit if you are a fan of Thai-Laos food. They have a good range of menu selections too--some are not for the faint-hearted!
D. H.
Very friendly staff, simple menu and the pork skewers I had were spicy & delicious served with sticky rice and washed down with a Beerlao. My only quibble is that the price is a bit high for what you get, but then it's in Covent Garden.
J.
Super spicy!! Do not underestimate. Overall food was fair and although quite unique to be "Laotian" food in London did not make a big impression. Recommend for an experience.
C. M.
Food is good. Hadn't ever tried Laos food, so, that's a plus. The place is nicely decorated and the ambience is very traditional and cute.
S. A.
Always have lovely food here . Xx
P. H.
Laos food is my favourite and finally we have a central place like this to dine in. Lovely, spicy and exotic food with variety of Thai tea. Definitely recommend the grilled pork neck, all types of somtam, pork ribs soup, Laos sausages
M. L.
In between Vietnam and Thailand lies a small country of Laos. But Laotian food is unlike any of the above. Check out the papaya salad (spicy), grilled skewers if pork neck (trust me on this one) and the grilled sticky rice. The home made coconut ice cream is also a must. The brave ones should go for ant eggs (you've read it correctly) and crispy fried bugs (yep, insects). Don't forget the Laotian beer! A must visit again to try even more things - and share!!!
T.
THE BEST YOU CAN GET FOR SOUTH EAST ASIAN FOOD! I'm Thai and this is literally the best restaurant I have ever been to. Been twice now and definitely going back again and again when I miss food at home.
B. D. K.
Their spicy dishes are indeed very spicy, beware! Otherwise great vibe and food. Lovely experience that was recommended by a Thai friend living in London!
T. J.
Very nice cozy atmosphere downstairs. No A/C. Lovely food from the region provided here, however go easy when ordering the spicier stuff... Overall a lovely restaurant. Staff very friendly and welcoming.
P. T.
I just love the food here. It's very strong and has a balance of sweet and sour in nearly everything. The grilled fish was superb along witha selection of seafood, also grilled.
S. R.
Such an amazing find!! Just happened to walk in because it looked interesting, we were seated immediately. We were blown away by the food! Do yourself a favor and go here before more people get to know about it... this place is "queuing" good!! Plus service was attentive and warm. I'd go back in a heartbeat! Wishing you well Cafe Lao!
S. Z.
Food is tasty, but the menu options are limited. Had a hard time deciding what to order. Service is quick and friendly. Not a very large place and can be quite busy.
L.
Authentic Lao food. I like that they have unusual dishes that you can’t find anywhere which is a great experience to try. I had ant’s egg soup, grilled fermented pork sausage and pickled crab papaya salad
T. L.
This food at this place made me think of the awesome time I spent in Laos way back in 2010. It also made me miss all the friends I met during my trip. And yes, they serve beerlao. Enough said.
B. L.
Fantastic. Very authentic Laos food.
D. V.
We try to visit Lao restaurants to see how Lao food is interpreted. We decided to visit this restaurant in the Covent Gardens area. As we entered the waitress, in Thai, asked if I spoke Thai or English. I let her know that I spoke Lao and she proceeded to usher us in in English. Well, that was weird. In the US, some Thai restaurants are owned by Lao people (who speak Thai) or employ Lao cooks. So when introduced with a Thai person at a Lao restaurant I was a bit taken aback, but definitely wanted to give this place a chance as there is a region of Thailand whose food matches that of Lao food. We put in our order of papaya salad (tum mak hoong), sticky rice (kow niew), Lao sausage, and fried rice salad (nam). All were tasty, were definitely not authentically Lao and more of a Thai version of Lao food.
T. B.
Spicy and delicious! Love the mushroom curry and the hot pots. The salads are all tasty. My favourite restaurant in London.
S. C.
A small restaurant in central London where you can find the authentic Northeastern Thai foods, similar to Lao foods. The price is quite expensive but reasonable, as the ingredients are rarely found. For Thai, we recommend the Tum Taad (with Plara, a traditional fermented fish).
A. K.
First time in a Lao restaurant. I really enjoyed it. Especially the chargrilled pork skewers. Be aware that medium spicy is very spicy and decide accordingly. Seating upstairs is preferred.
C. K. P.
Nice enough food, friendly staff but a touch expensive. Be warned, food seems authentic and hence spicy! 12.5% gratuity was added by default, which I thought was a bit 'cheeky' for a cafe!
J. L.
Well prepared, full of flavour, felt home cooked. Warning : two chillies in the papaya salad is quite fiery. We shall for more, and to try out the rest of the menu !
T. H. R.
AMAZING!!!! Super fresh and delicious!! The service was also great! Will repeat 100%!!
v. b.
A small restaurant.the deccore was lovely. The food was pricey but very tasty. I loved their papaya salad.it was a small amount for the price, maybe because i asked for takeaway but tasted so good
S. S.
Nice cosy little Thai-Laotian cafe with one of the most authentic spicy fares in London. A bit pricey and the portions are quite small.
L.
Papaya salad was very good ( the thai one), the rest of the dishes (stir fry and another one from the lunch menu) were so so.
S. R.
Tiny place and full of Thais. Really good food and as close to Thai food as you can find in London. Not a lot of elbow room as they really cram in the tables.
m. t.
As deliciously authentic as Luang Prabang cuisine can be out of Luang Prabang!
T. P.
Didn’t expect Lao’s salad to be like this .. Main courses are okish.
D. W.
Awesome food, great location and setup ... tastes just like being back in Lao! Price wise it’s great for its location, but seriously don’t go expecting Lao prices in central London.
A. M.
Amazing food! Worth a trip. Ribs hot pot , skewers, salads, all excellent
L. S.
Papaya salad was too spicy even we told to have less chilis. the service charge was 12.5% a bit high though
H. F.
Tasty and quite different. Nice selection of dishes, though some better than others. Good value.
R. S.
Fantastic & authentic Laoatian food
J. K.
Cool place, different and original cuisine. Staff are friendly and helpful but stay away from the durian ice-cream unless you're brave!
P. M.
Nice tucker tending toward the spicy end. A bit on the expensive side but there's not a lot of Laotian restaurants in London.
W. H.
Love this friendly buzzing place for lunch. Try their lunch menu options for red curry dishes, soups and stir fries! Delicious!!!
S. S. (.
Newly opened Laos cafe located near Covent garden. It's the traditional Laos food. Good price and very local
A. K.
Friendly. Always busy. A bit of a wait, but the food is tasty. Even when not described as spicy it definitely has spice to it.
P. C.
Superb food, very tasty I ordered the pork neck and it was delicious, same as the mushroom soup (don't remember the exact name) Recommended
L. P.
All good but nothing special. Interesting food that is very hot. Good service and reasonably priced. Worth going just to try Lao food
T. “. M.
Every dish we tried were fantastic, the best v south East Asian meal I've had out of south East Asia. It's not cheap but it is with the price.
S. P.
Nice little Laotian spot that's not afraid to feed you insects if you're so inclined. Food was good, make sure to heed the spicy warnings.
S. G.
To put it simply, the grilled pork neck was one of the best dishes I have ever eaten. Everything else was good as well.
H. S.
Really authentic food ! Which is so rare in London. Loved the pork neck. Quite small portions...but that is authentic !
J. M.
Good good but we were not served together. Great Price for Covent Garden. Différent. Give it a try. Homely.
n. s.
Wow, happy to discover this fantastic place. Great food, reasonably priced.
Service can be a bit more organized.
E. P.
We went to lunch today and service was excellent, we had never tried lao street before and our waiter was very helpful and the food was simply lovely.
J. M.
Very authentic, my fav
K. “. B.
OMG! The most authentic cuisine I've had outside South East Asia. Long may this restaurant survive.
M. R.
Delicious! Everything was very tasty, the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, staff were nice. Looking forward to returning.
S. R.
Great food and kind people. Really great discovery not far from Covent Garden.
I was there with kids and they don't push for consumption. Really appreciated !
S. S.
Food taste way too sweet to our liking. Service is a bit poor because they are very short handed.
B. H.
A superb Laotian restaurant in Covent Garden. Highly recommended. They serve delicious fried insects :)
S. P.
If you're looking for something different this is the place for you. The atmosphere was friendly and the food was delicious. I would thoroughly recommend this to a friend.
T. R.
Really exceptional
Do pay attention when they tell you the food is spicy, we got the mild option and it was just perfect.
C. B.
Amazing and unusual flavours! Best meal in a long time
M. H. H.
Love this place. Som Tum is so good and the fried fish dish (laap pls?) is AMAZING.
H. T. C.
The food is ok, but it's not my taste. And our seat at the basement was hotter than a tube during a hot afternoon/evening
L. F.
A real find! Delicious fresh spicy food and a great atmosphere. Looking forward to going again.
K. C.
Lovely informal Lao cafe in Covent Garden - get your fix of Isan Thai food here. Best som tum and laab in town
N. S.
Great food. Good service. Can get busy so better to book a table in advance
N. D. (. R.
Food is good spicy so if it's a tad too much ask for mild as it is still flavoursome
P. J.
Tasty food!
n.
Lao food in Central London. Food is tasty but a bit on the sweet side, maybe tweaked to suit local taste.
B. O.
Delicious food, especially the grilled meats. It can be busy so consider making a reservation.
