Reviews of Marksman
J. H.
Loved our Sunday lunch here. Our server, Kat, was very helpful and attentive and gave a good rundown of the menu before we ordered. All the courses we ordered were delicious - from the pickles snack to the devilled crab soup and duck liver parafait to our cod/mussels/monks beard mains. Topped off by great dessert and coffee. Only small niggle was that the playlist was very short and we heard the same song 3
times in our less than 2 hour visit. Overall a great experience and we’ll definitely be back!

The Marksman, it hits the mark, man.
This is not your usual Sunday roast, heck it's not your usual pub food. This is fine dining Sunday roast where you're not going to be undoing the top button of your trousers, nevertheless it's still as satisfying and comforting as a big ol' roast at your Nan's.
The vibe whichever floor you sit on is great, with friendly and helpful staff ready and waiting.
The food itself is fresh and subtle in flavour and although you may think "is there enough?" by the end you're thinking that was just right.
I had the beef which was tender with a squash puree smoother than my bald head. My better half had the celeriac tart which was next level (she wasn't even jealous of my Yorkshire pudding, which is unusual).
I could go on, but you should just go check it out and be happy with your life choices.

Need to try the Sunday roast here if the bar food is anything to go by. Highly recommend a nice dry Croation white wine they had. Dogfriendly in the downstairs bit.
P. T.
Weeknight dinner for 4 people = £190 for food + £160 for drinks including service charge. We sat upstairs. Service and food were both very good (although probably overpriced for a gastropub). My main issue was with the drinks. My 3 friends all have wine qualifications. They ordered a beer (didn't like it), a martini (less dry than expected), and 2 £60ish bottles of wine (both below expectations). That doesn't seem right. For food we got the signature lamb buns, oysters, curried crab, devilled cockles, pollock & cuttlefish main, wing rib sharing platter, and 3 sides.

First time at the Marksman.
The best crab soup ive ever eaten, and overall great food.
But, Felt a bit robbed being charged extra for roast dinner sides, plus it was hard to fit them on the plate as the roast dinner plate was a side plate... The plates also have an arch on it meaning when you try cut anything the plate tips up. Sooo annoying. The plates which the desserts were served would’ve been perfect.
The roast was under seasoned and the yorkshire pudding lacked everything.
Dont understand the hype for the beef bun? It was cold and lacking in flavour.
The brown butter tart incredible.
Perfect service.
The drinks and wine were perfect, but a real let down were the old pub bathrooms, which are awful for a medium to high end place.
S. F.
We went for Sunday lunch - the menu is largely limited to 3 courses for £40 on a Sunday.
The food was great. Not just your standard pub roast.
Unfortunately, we were a walk-in and the only space available was at the bar - not a comfortable place to be sitting! But still, lovely surroundings and good service.
C. J.
Not a bad boozer… good vibe, food menu looked good but wasn’t available when we were there… average beer offering
Worth a look if you are in the area…
L. B.
Incredible roast, great service in a nice neighborhood. We always enjoy our time there.
a. r.
Very nice local pub with a very cosy vibe. The interior decor is that of vintage wooden Victorian pub. A must if you are in the area.
The staff is super friendly and nice and thus one extra star for them.
Would definitely come back :)

If you're just looking for a 'bog standard' Sunday Roast then this is not the place for you.
This is fine dining with the added advantage of being able to have a pint in a friendly pub atmosphere.
It's not cheap, but then when you take into account that it was the first pub in London to be awarded the Michelin Star Pub of the year within it's first year of being taken over by Tom and John, the current owners, then you can't really call it overpriced. Tom is a Michelin Star Chef, and John previously worked for Jamie Oliver.
So, if you want to eat top quality freshly cooked food that is light years ahead of anything else you might find in East London then give The Marksman a call and reserve a table. Just bear in mind that you will need to book in advance as this place is pretty busy. But that's not surprised considering the quality of the food and drink on offer.

Fantastic food and great service! The descriptions on the menu don't do the dishes justice. Everything we had was so delicious, will definitely be coming back again.
H. S. (.
Excellent food, staff gave us great advise. Loved it
T. M.
Amazing experience and meal ! Everything was perfect from the staff so nice, helpful and efficient, to the food and atmosphere !
I had family visiting for the weekend and wanted to give them great and enjoyable Sunday roast.
We ordered couple of starters (Jerusalem artichoke and lamb buns were delicious!) and then got the short ribs to share coming with potatoes, celeriac purée and roasted carrots, Yorkshire pudding and gravy. We added the cabbage as sides. And couldn’t resist to order the duck and wild leek), simply gorgeous!
Few words about the dinning room. You have 2 different place either the pub or the dinning room (Nordics style). Too really different vibes. Dinning room feels lighter and relax.
Marksman you hit the spot ! Huge thumbs up to the team behind this place. (Special shout-out to the Canadian waitress 😉) Will definitely come back.
F. K.
Big fan of the vibes here and the food usually, but they got a few of our orders wrong, which was disappointing. Their wine list is almost prohibitively expensive too, the cheapest rosé was listed at £48 per bottle.
S. S.
Absolutely banging Sunday roast, one of the BEST , delicious cocktails and very friendly staff .
10/10.
Will go back and recommend this place.
A. K.
Really good food overall. The rabbit pie was excellent. The brown butter and honey tart is worth the hype. It's heart-stoppingly good. Service was a little slow though the waitress was quite apologetic. Worth a trip
P. S.
Amazing pub food! Came here on a Friday although a friend recommended Sunday roast the most. I had cockles with cherry tomatoes, turbot with brown shrimps, and a fantastic dessert comprised of barley mousse, chocolate ganache and sour cherry. Top! ...and the best oyster I've tasted in London. Real surprise! Must try pub!

Set in the heart of the Hackney Road in East London this is very much a traditional old pub with the downstairs looking like it's been kept in that style but the upstairs has been turned into a quirky and slightly retro dining room. You can just pop in for a drink and try one of there great local ales & lagers as we did a few weeks ago but it's mainly a food place. While we were here last we looked at the menu which is changed daily , plus in seeing some of the food being served made us want to come here for lunch and yesterday that's exactly what we did. When you book there is no guarantee where you'll be seated but on this occasion we were seated upstairs. Which was nice and a totally different atmosphere to downstairs especially yesterday as it was very busy. When you look at the menu you'll see that the dishes are certainly different to any where else , but after they were explained but one of the very friendly staff we made our choices . Firstly we started with some Olives & Black Treacle Sourdough Bread . The we had our starters which were Devilled Mussels & Monks Beard and to say the Mussels were amazing is an understatement and my Tamworth Blood Pudding & Parsley which was heavenly Then it was time for our mains of Braised Lamb , Peas & Wild Garlic (sadly no pic) but was fantastic and my fabulous Roast Hereford Rump of Beef which was simply stunning as were the Yorkshire Pudding , Roast Potatoes & Veg. These were matched with a delightful fruity Red Wine from Portugal After a little rest it was time for desserts a delightful Sheep's Yoghurt , Rhubarb & Rose and a delicious Chocolate Burnt Milk & Barley matched with a nicely chilled Banyuls a French Sweet Wine This brought an end to a truly memorable Sunday Lunch and I can honestly say it won't be to long before we return as the food was amazing and each member of staff was so warm and friendly.
M. J.
The place to go once you have done Columbia road. Top up on their delicious Sunday roast, but do give their starters and desserts a try as well! Prices are fantastic for the quality and produce on offer. Don't forget to look at their wine list as well. Highly recommend!
G. L.
Excellent Sunday roast. Highly recommend - from start to finish - sourdough & butter, lamb bun, the crab soup, and for dessert, the brown butter tart.
A. K.
One of the best Sunday roasts I've had. I chose the beef option and the meat was excellent, and came with a giant Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, veg and pumpkin puree. The dessert however was very average and slightly disappointing for the price paid.
T. K.
Just wow, blown away by Sunday Roast at the Marksman! We ordered rump roasts, plus an extra side of greens and starter bread (highly recommend both!). The meat was high quality, potatoes crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, perfect yorkie, greens buttery and delicious, and the real show stopper was absolutely the carrot puree. It is a little on the expensive side for a roast, but comes as a two or three-course. We certainly didn't need the dessert, but the chamomile ice cream with poached pears were a refreshing, sweet finish to a wonderful meal. Thank you Marksman team!
R. S.
Heard a lot about the food in this gasto pub, so booked it for lunch on a Saturday. Went to the first floor dinning room which was a little plain looking. The service was friendly and knowledgeable but a bit slow. The food itself was really nice and very filling.
D. B.
What an unexpected find. The food is refined and everything was just perfect. Get the curried bun, just superb. Service is great too.
S. C.
We went here for Sunday roast and it was delicious. The beef was well seasoned and perfectly medium rare and the broccoli was very nice. I would definitely recommend based on food and ambiance! It was quite expensive though and the service could use with some improvement.
S. V.
Was good, slightly bland chicken roast all other food was nice. Overall very good! They had a really nice rum there.
J. B.
Delicious food, very friendly and knowledgable staff. Loved the dining room upstairs. It’s local so I will be visiting again for sure.
A. R.
Good food, good vibes. Just awesome.
We went for brunch and had an incredible time. It was a sunny day so the staff offered to move our table to their roof terrace, they helped us with a pram, the service was attentive and the food (esp the kedgeree) and drinks were consistently great.
E. H.
Giving four stars because the food is normally excellent, and the atmosphere downstairs is really good. But as soon as you go upstairs it's a different story. Service seems to be in another world, waiting 20 mins for drink orders and then a frosty reception when you enquire, or cocktails arriving after mains have...we ordered them to drink before the meal. It's small things but they can ruin a meal and when you're paying that much you shouldn't have to put up with it. Sort out the communication between upstairs and down or sort out whoever is managing the FOH upstairs.
S. H.
I was lucky enough to watch Jon Rotherham talk recently at an event on Modern British food. Found his point of view fascinating and have now finally eaten his food which was absolutely top notch on all fronts.
I had a drink at the bar first which was beautifully nostalgic. A ‘proper pub’ seems like the appropriate terminology, but a proper pub with homemade cordials and spirits (such as the horseradish vodka used in the Bloody Mary).
When we sat in the more modern and breezy upstairs dining room, the service was perfectly polite and never intrusive. We ordered all sorts but the real highlights were the Rabbit Pie for two which had such continually rewarding depth of flavour bite after and bite and with moist rabbit, mushroom, herbs and flaky pastry.
The dessert pictured below is their famous Brown Butter Tart and it lived up to all expectations. An absolute triumph - it dissolved into sweet buttery liquid once it hit the tongue. I adore it, it now ties with The Goat Milk Ice Cream and Liquorice at Sabor for best dessert in London (in my own private ‘Best ofs’ of course).
M. T. (.
This place is like a modern touch on a throw back of a 70s wine bar with one exception.the food. The food is sublime and local produce.. I reccomend getting a few plates to share.
m.
Go for the holy grails beef buns, pork belly butter and honey tart
L. S.
I love this pub, great atmosphere & food BUT terrible gravy on the roast - my friends that go there a lot agree its always been the same. I'm quite perplexed why the pub doesn't know this.
N. L. M.
Great place to eat not quite so good as a pub but impressed with the drinks variety all the same.
T. W.
When I see a restaurant with a 4.2 on Google, I like to check the negative reviews first. Not because I think I'll learn anything important that will change my mind about going, but to be consistently surprised by how privileged and idiotic people can be when eating out. (4.2 usually means a lot of 5s and some really bitter 1s.)
Here's a fun game - guess the number of stars the following two reviewers left the Marksman Public House.
"We were also stopped on the way out for not paying the full DISCRETIONARY service charge, we left what we felt they deserved."
"but the quality of food is outstanding. Comfortable and cosy."
Maybe the first one a 2, and the last one a 5? TRICK QUESTION. They both gave a 3.
So many of these negative reviews read like the diner had either never been in a restaurant before, or had worked out a "clever" narrative for their displeasure and then forgot if it made sense at all. Like this happy camper:
"When I got the bill I was shocked at the cost of a "Sunday roast"."
Do you... do you not check the price before eating somewhere? It's called a menu. The Marksman has one.
"The doorman didn't smell my feet while I was leaving." "The waiter made us wait while he breathed and existed." "There were so many empty tables and they said they had none!" (One or more of these might be made up.)
RESERVATIONS people. They're called RESERVATIONS.
Look. I get it. Food shouldn't cost anything, right? And when it does cost some amount it should arrive in quantities that would kill a robust horse. And it sucks when that doesn't happen! Sucks so bad.
The Marksman is a lovely pub that makes very good food which costs more than some people think anything should cost. The staff is fine if you remember they're humans. They do something super special to the potatoes. Definitely worth going.
W. Q.
Absolutely excellent customer service, particularly during a busy Christmas time and shortages within hospitality workforce. Best sticky toffee pudding ever (not too sweet).
D. A.
Service and food good but I found it to be very overpriced. It’s £40 for 3 courses at lunch but then there’s a £5 supplement for a pie and then it’s £5 extra for roast potatoes and another £5 extra for some bland spring greens.
The starter was lovely and the dessert too.
The roof terrace needs some tlc - it’s very drab and the tables and chairs are really uncomfortable. And if it rains the cover is very haphazard.
Glad I came but much better roasts for much better value to be had in London in my opinion.
e. b.
Totally worth it for the food but the service was really disappointing, we waited nearly an hour for a drink before the waiter took our food order, and it's a set menu! The first course is bread, wouldn't be impossible to bring that to keep us going for the hour wait. The bread was delicious. Then they brought the main course before we had the starter. OK the terrace was busy but not full and there were only a couple of tables in the restaurant. Felt like the service was letting the kitchen down.
P. M.
One of the best gastropubs in East London. Great menu. The kedgeree with crab and curry leaves and omelette with mushrooms were amazing
M. G.
Had the 3 course Sunday roast lunch in the restaurant upstairs. Lovely food, wonderful restaurant setting, extremely friendly and efficient wait service.
K. N.
Solid and seasonal food, in well designed simple surroundings. Less of a pub and more of a brasserie feel, the food is wonderful. Simplicity but perfectly executed. Friendly and accommodating staff, great wines.
A. D.
Service is amazing, when come to food you need to be ready, absolutely over price for the quality, frozen langoustines...over cooked steak. 8£ for a side salad?? Over 300 pound for a poor meal and it supposed to be one of the best pub in London.....
S. T.
The best boozer in London - unbelievable food, drinks and service I can highly recommend
J. C.
Came here for Sunday roast with a group of friends. The food was delicious but the service was super slow and the waitress kept forgetting our drinks. If you want a really long Sunday lunch then it's the place to go.
J. H.
Overpriced for the food served, service also extremely slow and they forgot items (like drinks ordered) multiple times. Crab starter and dessert were good but the roast was too small a serving for the price and sides were an extra cost. Would not recommend.
L. W.
What an amazing pub...fab food, great drinks, and lovely loos. Slightly on the small side and not enough cubicles for the ladies, but clean, stylish and handwash. Keep it up!
S. R.
I had a great Sunday roast here, on the terrace! Super nice place and friendly staff.
a. r.
Love this little traditional pub in Hackney now gastro pub wonderful for Sunday roast. One of the best pies in town. Lovely atmosphere and service.
C. S.
Fabulous bacon chop brunch.. hash browns rather dry and overly 'crisp' for my taste, but chop and egg cooked perfectly. Great service.
J. N.
Great pub, but pretty poor veggie options.
J. P.
An upmarket gastropub with a Bib Gourmand rating from Michelin, that manages to retain an authentic "boozer" feel with punters at the bar, and is infused with a slight North American hint thanks to the requisite quality customer service and choice of piped music, is an admirable feat. Table staff are finely turned out and very friendly. Rudolfo, the friendly bartender was patient, kind and knowledgable.
10 taps (9 in service); 3 hand pumps (2 in service); and an extensive wine list. Beers are largely local and, other than Guinness, there are no megacorp labels which is great.
Fantastic atmosphere.
Bring your wallet, though. Red Ale: £5.50. Brick Lane Lager: £6. Prices seem a bit bonkers for Haggerston.
C. D.
Excellent food, beautifully cooked and presented.
D. C.
The place looks lovely, but it was super loud (even before they added loud music to the mix) and the service was incredibly slow and not very pleasant. The food was nice, but nothing more. Not worth the more than 80 pounds per person we spent.
L. M.
Good food but overpriced. £45 for the set menu might sound alright, but potatoes as a side come at £5 extra (the main doesn't have any sides so you have to order them). Bread is also in that region. Add drinks and you're at £90+ per person. Again, food is nice and service is attentive, but just a bit over the top with the prices.
L. T.
Cute pub, friendly staff and great food 👍
H. P.
Excellent food and drinks. It can get fairly busy but the waiters still give great service!
R. C.
Nice vibe but the menu was... odd. We thought we were getting a set menu for £45 but instead it was lots of small plates with some "mains" and a couple of plates to share between 2. If you want something substantial I wouldn't come here. Very minimalist, plus it was £16 for an omelette sooo I think that says all it needs to.
C. Y.
Good, tasty food with nice twists on traditional Sunday roast dinners and home comfort meals. In my opinion the staff are a little stuffy, front of house lady seemed disinterested. We were also stopped on the way out for not paying the full DISCRETIONARY service charge, we left what we felt they deserved. So if you want nice food but don't mind prickly service I would recommend this place. If you want a nicer all round experience I would go elsewhere.
E. A.
Excellent food and perfect service👍Thank you so much.
D. W.
Cute little terrace space upstairs. British fare with good flavours, though menu is surprisingly expensive.
A. N.
Cozy pub for a beer with your partner or friends. We enjoyed our visit tasting (a few of) their selection of beers on tap. The place is very nicely decorated and the atmosphere invites to stay for long. Staff was quick, helpful and polite. If I lived nearby, this could quickly become one of my fixed places. We did not order anything to eat, but it looked great (on the tables nearby). Worst: they lacked soap (or the tap) in the gentlemen's restroom. Best: cozy atmosphere and plenty of people having a nice time.
J. D.
Tip top. With three people at an early Sat dinner it was brilliant. We had pheasant pie, curried lamb heart and beef shin. All were very good with the curried lamb heart being a proper surprise. Decently spiced and with a good amount of heat to it. Pie was decadent and the beef just so. I'll definitely be back for the spring menu.
S. F.
Really nice place to chill out. Good seating area and great customer service. The lady took out order outside and brought beer out for us. Will be back there when I'm in the city again.
D. H.
Omg! Myself and my partner visited here after lots of friends recomended it to us! The pie was AMAZING! the potatoes omg... Delicious & the pie for pudding ❤️ v friendly staff and nice ambience.
B. M.
I love the food. I love the drinks and the great wine list! It is a pub, but much more than a pub. Better to book a table especially at the weekend. Perfect spot for a Sunday roast or just to try the scrumptious beef bun or the rich desserts. The right place to understand that British cuisine is getting to a whole different level. Fortunately.
J. D. R.
The food, decor service and ambience were excellent. I must remove 2 stars because having paid over £20 for a main you would expect to be full! The portions were small, the pie had no base or sides (just porcelain not pastry), and the accompanying £5 potatoes were very nice again, but just a tiny portion. I had to eat something else after.
T. H.
Had a great meal here with my father. Yes, it costs a bit, but this is London - your wages are probably overpriced as well. The oysters with shallots and butter tart were particular highlights from the menu, we had a few dishes to share which worked well. The waitress was attentive and knowledgeable, which more than made up for the slightly patronising email exchange I had with the manager beforehand. Recommended
p. w.
Total value for Sunday roast. The staff is friendly and helpful, especially to a new London transplant who wasn’t familiar with many of the things on the menu. Feels like a locals spot- although couple of the locals were celebs. Really yummy and a great experience for the $
G. A.
This place is a tad unorthodox - on ground level, there is a quaint standard local pub, with an open-air terrace above half of it for drinking.
However, upstairs inside, they offer an amazing (especially for the price) prix-fixe menu, with a completely different, bright and homey decor and mood. Reservations are almost mandatory.
We bring our out-of-town foodie friends here, and they have always left impressed.
Wine options are good, all inside the meal price-range. Decent craft beer selection as well.
T. M.
The place very nice and service was good, enjoyed our cocktails but the main course which was a duck and leek pie for two was really awful - gravy was really runny and really it was more like a soup in a bowl with a few pieces of duck. Absolutely not worth 40 quid. They did let us send it back however, thankfully!
L. P.
Truly awesome example of an elevated take on traditional English Sunday roast. Pheasant and bacon pie for two was our most memorable dish in London, along with the brown butter honey tart (tart shell alone worth studying). Pressed pigs head, mussels and autumnal soup first courses all exceptional. Decent wine selection and very nice cocktails. Expect to spend around 50 pounds per person. Service memorable to boot! Will be sending friends on holiday here and will return myself next time around.
B.
Great beers and wines - bartender clearly knows her stuff! Upstairs is restaurant with roof terrace; food is delicious gastro pub fare. Docking it a star for overall poor service - while food is delicious service is very slow and sometimes oblivious. I stood teen minutes at the bar waiting for service, only to be told that I had to order for at my table, and could do drinks there too - any one of the staff who walked past me while I stood at the bar could have taken the time to tell me that. While eating, trying to get a waiter's attention required vigorous semaphore. Adviser you to bring a road flare in order to be assured of speedy attention...
A. W.
Food was good but expensive and a bit out of step with the pub itself. It's definitely not the traditional pub food that sticks to your stomach. Got home after dinner and ate my home cooked leftovers because I was hungry still. You definitely need to be literate on current food trends because I had not a clue what anything on the menu was. Service was quick although a bit chilly.
N. G.
It wasn't what I expected or hoped. We went for a weekday dinner. I ordered the partridge, which was tough and tasteless. The skin on the bird wasn't crisped up, so it wasn't edible.
For dishes that expensive, to not have any real accompaniments with it, feels like a bit of a cop out. That said, the cabbage and confit potatoes were lovely.
It was a busy evening that clearly took the staff by surprise, so they did pretty well considering. Only one or two things were forgotten from our orders, which could have been helped by writing the orders down.
We spent £200 for 4 people including drinks. It's expensive and didn't feel like value for money.
S. E.
Disappointing . Mainly due to the service. Seated quickly enough but then waited for over 20 mins for someone to come and take our drinks order. Food was mainly good. Would have been nice to have the nibbles to accompany drinks rather than at the same time as the starters. Starter for one person forgotten. Main food good but could have been hotter. Cocktails, single measures and served in different sized glasses... all fine for a good pub or gastro pub even but for £450 for five for a Sunday lunch, I was hoping that they would pay more attention to detail. Shame, nice enough and one really good waiter who knew about and seemed passionate about the food but let down by everyone else. That said, both the buns and the treacle tart were extremely good - such a shame to be be let down by the experience.
M. M.
Everyone raves about this place - for good reason! A great pub and a specialist for the quintissentially British "Sunday Roast." Delicious food and drink, a warm atmosphere punctuated by the burbling of happy diners, and attentive service in a traditional English pub setting make this a winner.
I recently went for a Sunday roast - had the slow cooked lamb in a bed of stewed white beans which was delicious. The starters - pressed pigs head, mussels - were the standouts of the evening: fresh, light, full of flavour. All topped off with cocktails to start and a few glasses of great wines by the glass.
There are a ton of great pubs in the area and many of them do amazing food, but the Marksman Public House is a cut above
I. C.
Absolutely delicious gastropub. The exterior hides an extremely well thought out menu that delivers on execution & flavor every time. The food is worth the trip on its own, but I suggest taking some friends so that you can order more.
D. O.
Bit strange. Ate at a booked table in the pub. Loud music and dim light meant we struggled to read the menu. Waiter seemed a bit unhappy that we weren't ordering more and was a bit pushy about trying to get us to order a vegetable side that turned out to be from an old menu, and then when asked to point it out started trying to push another one instead. Took me a while to eat the brill as the dark lighting meant it was tricky to see well enough to take the bones out. Bill came with an extra £60 of food that we hadn't ordered. When challenged, the waiter blamed it on the system, produced a correct bill, and then disappeared for a good 10 minutes so we paid at the bar and left.
Food was very good though, beer selection pretty good too if you're just drinking. Personally had no issues with the size of the meal unlike other reviewers. Bar staff helpful and friendly.
A. M.
The food was lovely; the wine was excellent; and he service was quick, warm, and welcoming. I only remained downstairs so cannot comment on the dining room, but the pub atmosphere was just right. Obviously a bit on the pricey side, but this is to be expected this part of town, and the quality did deliver. Would definitely recommend
P. K. O.
Lovely place with great Sunday roast
A. S.
Amazing staff and best chicken ever! We were with 4 kids and a wonderful a
Girl found a table for us in a crowded Sunday evening and a the best waiter ever helped us with the choice in the menù and was very patient. Recommended to get a true London experience. Thank you
T. A.
Great food, excellent chicken pie and desert, and nice atmosphere. Strong wine list with plenty of options of different price ranges.
D. B.
Whilst it has gained a reputation for it's food, the bar at the Marksman retains a pub feel albeit with a fine selection of local craft and cask ales.
Our meal in the upstairs dining room deserved it's reputation. The chicken pie was perfection but the real highlight was the dessert menu.
Start were attentive and on hand with excellent suggestions for both food and drinks.
I'll be back
A. L.
First time out for dinner in 2021. Cosy covered terrace upstairs, fresh but warm! Delicious food and charming service, a really lovely evening.
J.
Nice place in a great location we went on a sunny Saturday - has a terrace but when we got there they weren't letting any more people upstairs apparently...they were quite busy so not their fault I suppose. What I did find shocking was the price was of a beer/cider at £6.50 each! Maybe these are just "London prices" but that's pricey for average beer and cider, not worth it at all.
A. R.
Great gastro-pub, food was really good and although not cheap (as most nice pubs) it was tasty. We had a rabbit pie for dinner that was delicious! Great staff and service too. Better to book in advance
S. K.
The pub downstairs is really lovely, and there is a terrace upstairs as well which is nice when the weather is nice! However went for a meal in the restaurant and the vegetarian option was disappointing (even though we warned them beforehand that I was veggie) - it was just spelt with a goats cheese curd for an outrageous £17! Starters were very nice though.

Reservations recommended on the weekend, especially sunday. Pricey for a pub but the quality of food is outstanding. Comfortable and cosy. Service can be variable depending on the day/ staff. We've been coming for years and have had both great and poor service experiences.
H. T.
Was here during the Euros where they have setup a couple TVs and only allow you to stay if you pay for the set menu, which I thought was great as it kept the numbers down. Barley bun, oysters, and steak very nice, ice cream sandwich to finish was so-so. All in all good little pub with a nice terrace, will be back post-tournament to check it out.
N. R.
We came here with high expectations after reading raving reviews about the Sunday roasts but we were disappointed! The portions were absolutely tiny for the size, and the meat was very tough. I expect a lot more if you're going to charge 70 GBP for a roast for two!
J. T.
Came for a Saturday dinner - food was amazing. From reading some other reviews I was worried the plates would be really small / bad value for money, but it was actually fine - maybe that's a Sunday issue?
Great atmosphere
H. R.
Cosy pub short walk from old st or Dalston. Food was excellent. Potatoes, oysters, chicken pie all delicious. Wine list was good. Service was friendly and attentive. Gastropub so prices are a little higher. Will visit again.
M. B.
Only had a couple of pints, classic pub with lovely atmosphere. Decent prices!
M. J.
Used to have the best roast in East London. Now okay but over priced. You have to order two courses and the portions are a bit stingy. On the other hand, the food is nice and it's a lovely little pub. a shame it's not as good as it was under previous ownership.
J. C.
A great pub with friendly staff and amazing food. John and Tom who own it are both top quality Michelin star chefs who have worked in some of the best establishments in London.
The first establishment in London to have won the coveted 'Pub of The Year' award. And amazingly achieved this within their first year of taking over the pub.
A lovely atmosphere and we'll worth a visit, be it for just a quick pint, or to make an evening out of it.
It also has a roof terrace and a resturant/function room, but book well in advance as it can often be very much in demand.
Highly recommended.
B. L.
disappointed to be sat on a rocking table that really didn't fit 5 people, next to a draughty front door. Definitely overpriced. Fried potatoes are amazing, as is the bread and the curried lamb bun. However my partridge was very tough and chewy, flavours were good however. the chocolate mouse dessert was far too bitter, and the salted caramel and hazelnut slice was quite underwhelming. The menu needs to be more descriptive (£4 for 'greens' and then getting a few salad leaves is misleading) and being sat downstairs next to the front door is not acceptable at those prices.
R. S.
I booked a table here for my family to have a Sunday lunch on the strength of some other reviews. When we entered, after walking around Columbia Road Flower Market, I was a bit disheartened as it wasn't what I expected. In my opinion, far from a standard gastro pub, it was a bit dingy and was stocked with local men in watching sport on TV. We took our table though and were pleasantly surprised by the nice food and good atmosphere as lunchtime rolled around. I had the roast pork belly which was great, especially the creamed cauliflower, but I did get jealous of the HUGE Yorkshire puddings served with the roast beef.
Overall, a functional pub lunch; increased prices that might suggest gastro pub grandeur; handy situation close to Columbia Road but not on it.
G. I.
Great food insecurity traditional pub. Looking forward to come back to taste the pies.
A. V.
I really wanted to rate this 5 stars as when it was good it was exceptional, but unfortunately everything was inconsistent. The service, when it was there, was warm and friendly but suffered from being sporadic - we ignored for extended periods and struggled to attract attention. Most of the food was outstanding - but some was just mediocre. Not bad - just not exciting. Same with the drinks with the exception of the coffee which was undrinkable.
j. w.
The shine is coming off for me. When it opened it was fresh and a step ahead, bold flavours, simple but delicious food done well. Feels a little lacking in vibrancy these days and newer places nearby have surpassed it. Loved it before, still decent but no longer has a wow factor
P. F.
Best food I’ve had in a very long time and definitely the best food I’ve ever had in a pub. Cosy feel, still maintains the pub atmosphere but serves food way beyond a pub’s expectation. Perfect for a group or couple. One of London’s best. Can’t recommend enough. Always go for the full 3 courses. Great value too
H. L.
Delicious high quality food and nice setting but service really slow and not as attentive as this level and price should be; we were rushed to our seats, which had been reserved, seated at a corner near a door, then left 35minutes with no one coming to us, had to ask for our order to be taken and even after that it was minimal contact. I would return for the quality of food, despite the high price, but if the service and attention to detail continues to be poor would not be worth it.
P. P.
Great food and cocktails. The most delicious and spicy Bloody Mary that blew my hangover away in an instant. We ate on one of the five or six tables on the roof terrace which was bliss in a rare London heatwave. Service was slow on the terrace but if you go knowing it's going to be a long lunch, it's great!
K. B.
With its wooden paneling, soft lighting and leather seats, Marksman is the perfect place for a cosy evening meal on a dark, Sunday evening. The pub was featured in the Times best venues for a Sunday roast and the food didn't disappoint, it's not exactly a hearty roast, with the portions being a tad on the small side but the quality was great, beef was perfectly cooked, pink and juicy, the potatoes were super crispy and the greens were a nice accompaniment.
F.
Great casual dining with good wines. Service quite attentive.
We (tried) to have a last beer downstairs before we left. After 3 sips in, the bouncer asked us to leave. 😕
M. B.
When I came a couple of years ago this place knocked my socks off. I would have hands down put it in the top 10 for London. That I wouldn't do so now is as much testament to the super rise in quality amongst London pubs attempting to emulate the likes of the Marksman. The fact is, you still can't do much better. It is a great, great pub/restaurant. The food is of exemplary quality. There isn't much else to say: if it doesn't knock me back quite as much now, that's because it raised the game. Purely excellent gastro pub food.
P. M.
Lively atmosphere, even on a Sunday evening, and the main course food was good, service was by very informed staff but let down by very poor puddings which we part of the 2/3 course pricing. I would suggest if they were priced individually as part of a normal menu the restaurant would have most of them left so why offer them as part of a fixed price offering, it devalued the whole experience. British Sunday lunch menu should have traditional offerings not cheap "angel delight" covering some bits of honeycomb. A little more effort guys!!!
B. E.
Old pub that was kitted out to cater for top quality dining. In the refurbishment they didn't lose sight of the fact that it takes regulars to make a pub special. Top quality food and good beer are the backbone.
f. s.
Obscenely overpriced food and drinks. Don’t get me wrong, the food is perfectly decent, but the prices are just madness. 20£ for a pork chop accompanied by 3 grams of some random chutney. 24£ for a bottle of cheap wine which would be overpriced at 8£. Atmosphere is a bit uptight (borderline pretentious), ok service.
W. M.
Food is excellent. The Tamworth entree was bursting with flavour and the main Hereford rump was wonderfully tender. However the service severely let the place down. Despite having a 2pm booking, our table was only ready at 2.30pm. Our mains were forgotten about and they only discovered this when they tried to place dessert spoons on the table and we looked perplexed - around 3.40pm. Then after the meal finished we had to ask for the bill twice and ask to pay the bill another two times. It wasn't because it was too busy - by that point the server was just standing there when he was gently reminded. I still paid the 12.5% service - part of living here...
G. M.
Expensive!! Nice atmosphere and interesting menu but £20/portion for brunch.
A. O.
Yesterday I visited this pub for Sunday lunch with two friends having heard several recommendations but ended up being very disappointed. The "discretionary" service charge is apparently far from discretionary. I asked the waitress to remove it from the bill explaining that we wanted to decide on our own tip. At which point she demanded to know why several times. I explained that I wasn't happy with the service and she stormed back then continued remonstrating and raised her voice to the point that she was shouting at me in this busy bar. In the course of her tirade she mentioned that she had been really busy all day, that she had started at 11 that morning, and that we were "lucky" to get a table - I fail to see how this is relevant to the service we received. I asked to speak with the manager and he was at least good enough to refrain from shouting at me but did not apologise or it seems try to calm down his irate staff member. I'm sure not everyone has this experience here but I will certainly not be returning.
I suggest that they either remove the "discretionary" suggestion from their menu or adjust their prices to reflect the actual cost and pass on to their staff accordingly. Certainly they should try to employ people with more realistic understanding of what customer service entails.
A. O.
Vegan Sunday roast is absolutely delicious!!
A. P.
Mehman. Delicious cocktails, food is generally an overly rich greasy letdown with little acidic or fresh foils to this fat fest (overcooked broadbeans do not play this role). If you only had to eat a single bite from each, you'd probably think it was okay, but trudging through these rather small plates is hard and heavy. I will say the goat's curd with peas was fantastic, as were the deep fried potatoes (but aren't they always?). The milk buns which were touted as their speciality are seriously underwhelming (crunchy but also raw dough?). All in all way too much moolah now with the small plates and this level of execution--the composition made us ill. Make sure your order the side salad.
B. J.
I visited this pub for Sunday lunch. The service was excellent and the price of the food was reasonable. As for the food, the meat tasted lovely however there were too few vegetables and they were too salty, the yorkshire pudding too dry and everything on the plate was cold. This was a shame as had the food been a little warmer it probably would have been a lot tastier!
A. W.
Excellent food but the service wasn't great. Went here for Sunday lunch and ate very well. The food was great and reasonably priced given the quality and quantity. Service was slow and we missed out on a few sides/trimmings that I noticed other tables received. Also a few extra items appeared on the bill that we had to question.
Y. S.
With its focused and tasty menu, this gastropub deserves multiple visits. The smoked cod's roe and chicken and leek pie are to die for. Try to get a table in their small patio upstairs in a sunny day and you don't regret it.
F.
Nice food, a bit pricey on Sundays (set price for the meal), nice wine list. Cozy space, friendly service BUT inattentive. We've been asking multiple time for dishes and some of them never arrived (!).
E. R.
We ended up here by chance and had a great meal: pheasant pie and honey tart. Our waitress Amanda was amazing too. We'll definitely come back
E. D.
The staff were great, it has a great pub atmosphere, the music was not too loud and the food was generally very nice. I've deducted one star because the beef shin pie (one of the mains to share) was a real dissapointment. For the price (£38 for 2, the most expensive pie I've ever had) there was very little meat and the meat itself, whilst decent, couldn't itself justify the price and portion (for instance I've had nicer beef, venison and boar within other pies)
J. W.
The food is delicious! I love this pub for a great meal.
J. K.
More than just a pub, has a dining room upstairs offering great uncomplicated modern food. Well thought out menu and prepared food and good service. But gets busy so book table in advance if you want seats.
M. W.
Trendy pub. Fabulous fun and a great selection if libations.
The price of a drink may be a little in the higher side, but pubs come at a cost. I'll certainly go again, a lovely place.
J. B.
The best Sunday Roast I've ever eaten! It was a huge challenge to make my father like English food (as a French) and Marksman cuisine just smashed it! Delicious and a really authentic decoration!
D. D.
Lovley and cosy Bar with great food! This is the real thing if you are Looking for an authentic exprience.
T. P.
Dined upstairs. Food was amazing. Decor was really well planned and suited the surrounds of the pub while still giving the place a unique feel. Comes highly recommended.
T. C.
Nice pub, great cocktails and home made gin syrups. Food is only for evenings and weekends really. Menu looked superb, we will be booking for a try.
Friendly staff.
S. I.
Lovely restaurant upstairs with great service. Its great to be able to go a restaurant and not be on a timer. We were able to while away an evening without ever feeling ruched. The chicken & girolle pie is fab.
C. L.
Service average; waited well over 30 mins for mains. Food expensive but the quality is good. £30 set menu on Sundays for 2 courses. Can't just have one course which is a little annoying.
S. g.
Glorious meal at the Marksman!
The fresh seasonal food is incredible, atmosphere to match and staff brilliantly attentive. An easy London gem. We’ll be back.
S. H.
Bit pricey, but interesting food, good beer, and excellent service, so probably worth it.
J. M.
Good service, nice pub vibe. But food very underwhelming for the price.
Was hoping for a traditional roast, but it definitely wasn't. The gravy was the most disappointing. But the portion size was good.
D. T.
Managed to get a last min booking for the Dining Room and it was one of the best meals I've had in London. We shared a selection of snacks, small plates and mains between the 4 of us and almost every dish that came out tasted fantastic! Highlights include the girolles & cured tamworth on toast which was melt in your mouth, squid, white bean & sea purslane, treacle tamworth belly and all the desserts were also to die for. Can't wait to come back!
S. W.
I can't think of a time I've had a better Sunday roast. Other than made by family, of course! Delicious food, interesting menu, good service, reasonably priced, and in a good building with outside space
D. S.
Thoroughly enjoyed my Sunday lunch thankyou very much to the waitress from Leeds for the amazing service 10 out of 10 will come again . made me feel very welcome.
L. W.
My local and it’s amazing. Went for Sunday lunch (04-03-2018) and the staff were as lovely as always and the food was as delicious as always - the mushroom roast is amazing for veggies, and the parsnips are to die for!
V. M.
I like the spirit, the food & the place! Super staff too. Bravo!
K. C.
This is a great bar with great food. Perfect spot for a pint with friends as an old school pub but with the added benefit of an outstanding menu of great local food. Highly recommend for a visit if in the area.
J. S.
Amazing food in a cozy pub setting love it
N. N.
The location is a little out of the way and price isn’t cheap but the food here is exceptional so decidedly worth it. Really delicious nibbles as well as Sunday roast.
D. E.
Wow - delicious food. This place has become much more up market since I visited a few years ago. Good selection of beers, great food.
... not cheap though!
S. S.
Lovely place, with really good food. Had the Sunday Roast meal, and went with the lamb. Amazing. Thank you for a great dinner!
Y. B.
One of the Best Modern European British Food you can find in East.
Rabbit pie is one of my favorite x. Highly recommend.
A. C.
It’s just a bit too pricey for what you get. When you have to pay £20 for a main and another £5 for a side you expect this to be a bit more substantial.
It was tasty though, service was friendly and the place is lovely.
M. P.
Really great pub with really nice food, but the vegetarian option was incredibly disappointing.
Just completely dull and uninspired. Everything else was great but would not recommend to vegetarians.
M. R. H.
Had a wonderful dinner. Food was delicious and the staff was very nice.
A. S.
Had a great Sunday roast in the chic dining area upstairs. Delicious, locally sourced ingredients. Good portions; expensive!
O. B.
One of the best sunday roasts I've had in my multiple London visits. Don't skip the creamed leeks or steamed bacon bun, and the honey tart for dessert.
D. S.
Definitely overpriced. The beef was lovely, but not sure about the pumpkin puree, came with lots of potatoes but possibly the worst gravy I have ever had.
R. H.
Completely delicious food! Stylish dining room upstairs, cosy pub downstairs and a lovely roof terrace too. I always love this place!
J. B.
Fantastic food and great drinks selection, in an beautiful old pub with a rooftop terrace. There's not a lot of room, I'd suggest booking or getting there early if you can.
C. R.
There is the real possibility I'll never visit here again, but not because I don't want to, but because I moved.
I usually came here for a cheeky one after my haircut at rockit. No care as to time of day, if newly cut and Marksman opened I'd go for one or two.
Great place, missit, lots of love.
D. B.
Lovely food. The wine list, whilst very good, is a flabbergastingly overpriced. £73 for a £13 Pinot noir isn't acceptable sourcing inflation.
D. B.
What a wonderful dinner and pub! It is a little pricey but I felt it was totally worth it. Get the pie for two and a pint and enjoy yourself.
B. S.
Seriously impressive Sunday lunch, this place is a real gem! There were so many winners on the menu we had to over order but we did not regret it! I will be going again soon
L. G. B.
Great food amazing service.
j. r.
Nice bloody Mary’s but no terrace cause it was privatized …
M. W.
Really nice relaxed vibe in a beautiful bar. It's really nice at night, the dark interior matches the dim lighting. Well set up for social distancing
K. P.
London has a wealth of pubs that deem themselves 'gastro', fewer that actually produce great food and only a handful which can claim to be on par with the Marksman. The Bull in Hampstead being one of few that can rival it.
What sets the Marksman apart are 2 thing. 1. The environment is great, friendly and local 2. The staff, friendly, knowledgable and helpful they really do elevate the Marksman.
J. D.
Its changed since I was a local there in the 80s. The deactivated gun in the main room is no longer there & I suspect that behind the bar has also been....cleaned. Still a good place for a pint tho!
E. J.
Very good roast, I had the pork and it tasted sensational. The only downside is it doesn't have a great outdoor area and tends to get very stuffy inside during summer.
A. P.
Wonderful service and food. Had a great experience, not too expensive either. Loses a star due to very small cheese portions! Otherwise, perfect.
S. R.
Good food and drink but small portions and expensive
P. J.
Love this local. The staff are super friendly, there's a good selection of beer and wine and most of the time you can get a seat at the bar.
n. f.
Great pub, amazing roast on Sundays.
B. R.
Comfortable pub in upholstered library green leather and brass fitments with roof terrace. Dining room is a restaurant in its own right, fantastic food.
G. f.
First time with my children grown up by the way. I loved the relaxed atmosphere the staff were great and knowledgeable. The food was great especially the dessert. Try it.
J. P.
Visited the Marksman for the second time and was just as impressed with the quality of the food, the knowledge of the waiter and the atmosphere and decor. Outstanding.
J. A.
Sunday roast,Good food, great ambience, great price, however there should be a gravy without any pork influence.
A. S.
Absolutely excellent food, wonderful service, great wine list. All reasonably priced. Perfect place for a casual meal.
J. D.
Great - delicious - food. Service downstairs a little out of sorts but generally good. Clean. Great selection of food. Awesome sunday roast.
S. B.
Nice traditional pub feel but in a cleaned up gentleman’s club feel. Good Sunday dinners and good selection of gin and beers.
A. G.
Good pork roast, service not as good but overall a nice experience. They have a small terrace I can't wait to try on a sunny day.
C. l.
As always, the food was amazing and I'm always so happy to order with faith that any dish will be put together perfectly and delivered to the highest standard every time.
R. A. K.
Roast was amazing. Service was great. Only reason not 5* is they allow dogs and I have dog allergies.
Food, atmosphere all great. Will go again
P. G.
Incredible food! They had options for my allergies.. strongly recommend!
E. T.
Perfect local pub. One where the wine list is on a different level to most. Brilliant, proper food from the two Chef-owners.
K. A.
Great food, nice interiors after the refurbishment. However beer is expensive. £6.50 for a pint? Too much
J. V. G.
Super overpriced. Not worth the hype... just disappointing.
R. M.
Mixed feelings since revamp! Food brilliant... But atmosphere not as good for drinks. Consider this a restaurant and you'll be very happy...
T. F.
Great food and atmosphere in this superbly run pub. Small enough to be cosy but also plenty of seating space.
P.
The food is very tasty but expensive for what you get, I would say about 30% over what it should be. All the staff were lovely and attentive.
S. H.
Used to be a good pub, locals now forced out by trendy diners , menus could do witjbsome work but gets great reviews in the press
A.
The decoration is impressive, the food, the service and the beverage selection is exceptional, plus they have a great small terrace upstairs.
Q. C.
Great food but try not to go there on Sunday (to busy). Great atmosphere but others is just another local pub
w. l.
The roast beef was very tasty... roast potatoes were a little too crispy for my liking but overall it was enjoyable and I would recommend it.
S. S.
what a place. the breakie/brunch menu was amazing. loved the bacon. great coffee and beers too
F. H.
Great service, very nice classic pub
N. N.
Food was ok. Very slow serving. To much noise for me. I couldn't ear my friends talking. Maybe I am to old for a pub?
C. A.
Best Sunday pub lunch in London, hands down. Great service and impeccable food.
E. M.
Fab food. Small menu but quality. Nice service. Wine list a bit pricey!
A.
Great gastro pub. Friendly staff and really really good food and atmosphere. Highly recommended.
T. P.
Delicious food and good atmosphere. Service can be a bit slow at times but staff are great. A bit pricey too.
M. L.
Amazing food. Staff are great. One if my new favourites places
N. O. M.
The food was sublime, the attention to detail unsurpassed and my credit card doesn't feel too sore by the whole experience either. Win win
J. W.
great little bar for a night cap.
A. E.
Great food all prepared fresh on site even down to the cured ham. Possibly the best desert offered in Shoreditch.
H. G.
Excellent food- some of the best you'll taste in London combined with great ales and wine and unfailingly friendly service.
I. R. J.
One of the best places I have ever been in London!
N. H.
Favourite roast in the city, always have a delightful time here.
S. G.
A traditional looking pub in the nicest way. Friendly staff and good choice of beers.
M. D.

A. C.
Delicious Sunday lunch, good service, pleasant surroundings. Starter - mussels, yum!
N. B.
Great neighbourhood pub with an excellent menu and selection of beers. Small but comfortable.
J. S.
Lovely food, great drinks. Overpriced if going only for drinks
D. M.
Amazing staff, great food and strong selection of beers and ales. A bit pricey.
J. H.
Not the same pub I popped in with my dad as I was growing up but too proud to show they have fosters on draught. Just ask ;)
A. D.
Waiters not that attentive. Food very good but bit pricey. Good atmosphere
D. M.
We where part of a large party of drinkers who had all ended up at the Marksman after a funeral. We where given a friendly reception and made really welcome.
C. N.
Was a great Sunday session at this pub! Food was ok and nice as it’s near a park!
J. H.
Delicious food and friendly staff. Beware though - it's so hip that there's no name out front so you have to know where you're going!
R. W.
Food is amazing. So much so, I almost want to give it an awful review to keep punters away.
A.
Expensive but the chicken is possibly the best I’ve ever had if you’re prepared to pay up (and also pay extra for potatoes... in a roast)
J. M.
Great food, nice terrace to sit on in the sun, good beers. What more can you ask for?
J. S.
Really tasty meals and interesting choices. Great staff. Highly recommended.
