R.Great portion size and delicious food! Mess cafe is the perfect spot for a delicious breakfast/brunch with a great atmosphere. It is very clean, has modern decor and the staff are lovely. There are fair prices. I’ve visited for years and I always have a great time.

C. B.Amazing breakfasts, we go whenever I'm in Hackney! Has been 'gentrified' a bit since I first started going, breakfasts now have fruit and all sorts on the side and it comes in a frying pan. But it's good quality food for a decent price and friendly staff.

M. M.Visited again for the first time in about five years as we had noticed the food quality sliding. Was pleasantly surprised with the food quality which was okay.
But the staff were quite rude given that they got the order slightly wrong (which we mentioned but didn’t bother change as life’s too short and wasn’t that big a deal) and then didn’t bring my son’s food until we’d otherwise almost finished and waitress grumbled “yes but chicken takes longer to fry” like it was our fault for not choosing an easier cover for them to cook.
Thirty quid for two basic fry ups, a chicken burger and attitude. Not really worth it...

Very welcoming to children and provide some clean sturdy highchairs, will accommodate buggies. However no dogs allowed or outside seating.

Tea/ coffee no longer included with a £8.90 breakfast 😮 and I was charged extra to scramble my eggs ... unheard of.... bring back the original owners!!!!

Lovely food, clean and cooked well, friendly staff and cosy atmosphere, this is better than a "greasy spoon" but does better food, still at a very reasonable price for the portions. A family feel atmosphere which can get quite busy as it does do good food, locals return time and again due to it being better than the less quality "proper greasy spoon" down the road, thanks to all for the breakfast

I DID SAY I spent £26 and i told NO LIE regarding my scrambled egg ( which did NOT have mushrooms) you should have confirmed not the rest of our meal but the £6.50 egg (per meal ) = £13.00 instead of making out I'm lying!!!!
B.Been eating here for many years. Service, quality and price have always been consistently exceptional. So refreshing to still have a traditional cafe in such a central location.
One star off for not accepting card, although cash point is very close by. Otherwise absolutely faultless business, which I often recommend to friends and will continue enjoying their traditional cafe meals. Favourite is the Mess Burger with chips and an Oreo Shake! 😍

M. S.Quick, tasty, big portions of quality food stuffs. Well worth the cost. Small but comfy booth type and table seating. Can be busy during rush hours but otherwise quite nice, clean, easy access by public transport directly outside and nearby off road and estate car parking and has a public toilet with washroom.

F.Is it possible that this is the best greasy spoon in the world? This is the first one I've tried so please let me know if there is somewhere even slightly more impressive. My only caution is be prepared for paralysis when attempting to choose between the 10+ breakfast options which are not particularly descriptively named.
M. K.Grrreat fairly priced cafe. With decent tasting Food - it use to be excellent but they have gone down in quality, why 3 stars. They cater to Vegetarians & alternative milk drinkers like me which is always a goodun.
D. L.This is the place to be!! We love it here! It's the only place left in Hackney now that offers a really warm and genuine welcome to everyone. There is no them and us vibe here. The food is good old regular cafe food with no fancy names or posh labels.
It is lovely and clean and if you come at the wrong time you'll be left standing!!
Prices are realistic and they do the best tasting chocolaty hot chocolate ever.
Don't ever change mess...you guys are so polite and friendly. One of Hackney's finest!
Update: Sept 2018
This place has recently been refurbished and is under new ownership. The refurb looks great and bright and cheery.... however...with great beauty come great responsibility.
Sadly the new owners decided to increase capacity which has resulted in an uncomfortable and overcrowded eating environment. The last breakfast we ate there ended up being our last as we were literally on top of each other!
The menu and services remain the same - good portions and very friendly and welcoming.
So if the overcrowding isn't a problem for you then this place is still worth a visit.

Hmmm...not sure if the owners read my review but some of the new tables have been removed creating more space again bringing back the pleasurable experience eating here once was!
We are back and soooo happy as it really was hard finding somewhere with the everyone welcome vibe that we were looking for!!
N.Tbh I couldn't wait to pay my bill and leave. We went at 3 0'clock in the afternoon so it was far from busy. Sure enough we were greeted, seated and given a menu but everything after that just seemed to drag.
People who came in after us had their orders taken first, big no no. It was hard to get her attention as there was a table of loud teenagers behind us who seemed to be running the waitress into the ground with their demands so she was back and forth.
As we considered getting up to leaving she appeared to take our order, cool. When the food arrived she just put the plate down and left, no confirmation of whether we had everything, so I had to get up and walk to the counter to inform her the toast was missing. The food for me was just meh, yeah theres a good variety and priced well but it's the small things that matter to me when I'm spending my money.

O. W.Affordable and friendly and not as greasy as your usual breakfast cafe. When you eat here you feel like the local community is eating with you as theres a real sense of it being a local hub. Weekends you can see the traces of hangovers being soaked up by hungry revellers fron the night before, weekdays there's a broad mix of locals just enjoying good quality unpretentious food. Closed on Mondays.

L. S.Decent simple food, friendly staff, good value. A handy spot. I have been here a few times now. Really like the kids meal options - simple foods that little kids like and super value. I’ve had a sandwich and an English breakfast, both of which were tasty. The coffee is sturdy. Good vibes overall. I look forward to my next visit.
