Reviews of Mother Hubbard's East Ham
A. G.
Fish was very tasty and nice detest batter on fish, but this was not tasted exquisite but cooked to perfection The chunky chips also were delicious. Staff are friendly enough, They should start taking cards at the moment they accept only cash .
They have quite an extensive menu for a fish and chip shop and if you want traditional tasting food, then this is the place to get it from despite their being numerous eateries in close proximity.
Highly recommended. Will be going back to sample more of their menu.
Place is nice and clean 🧽
A. S.
1st time ordering from this place. Fish had a nice crispy batter, chips were ok, portion size was maybe a tad small for my liking. Place was clean and tidy and staff were friendly
J. B.
Lovely place. Nice, clean, spacious, very well presented. Staff are friendly too.
We had the fish and chips, with mushy peas, and gravy too. Price is very reasonable. Fish and chips is as good as you will get anywhere. Mushy peas also very nice and fresh. Gravy was awesome, best I've had by far. Overall very good quality, presentation and value for money.
The only negative I have is they don't take card payments, as this day and age, and with the current Covid climate, I find it outrageous that's a restaurant only takes cash. Especially even when most market traders take card payment. Disappointed.
I would 100% give this place a 5* .. but have to reduce 1* for the payment limitation. Definitely recommend this place, worth a try, I will definitely go back again.

After waiting about 20 minutes for my curry, fish & chips, with me as the only customer in the restaurant, I must admit I very nearly walked out on this my first visit, but then realised I had already paid and to be fair they were busy with other orders. I'm glad I stayed, but that's where they lost a star in this review
For £7.45 you'll get the best fish & chips around, and for a few pence more you can get spicy chips or cheesy chips for something different. I opted for the curry sauce at 95p. Oh, and you can pay contactless now!
The fish was delicious: fresh crispy batter - as many on here have already said - and quite a large piece of cod it was too! (Or maybe it was Icelandic haddock, not sure). Chunky chips, and plenty of them, served in a fancy takeaway box rather than on a plate was a nice touch - though I didn't like the plastic cutlery much. In short, currently the best chippy around East Ham, and for those who prefer it, you can order online and either collect the order yourself, or have it delivered to your door
The prices are reasonable, and the menu extensive: not many other chip shops around here offer the likes of scampi, onion rings, peri peri pasties, homemade pies - try the cheese 'n' onion - and a kiddies menu that serves fish (or chicken) bites, or fish fingers (and beans) for the little ones for about £4.25
Located in what really is a very clean restaurant that seats about 50, Mother Hubbard's is neatly furnished with photos of London in days gone by: there's ample seating with tables for two, four, or six people, the decor all nice and bright with an easy to read menu above the counter, and friendly and welcoming staff. Oh, and if you're the type that gets cold easily, you'll be pleased to know it was lovely and warm on this cold January night! I have no doubt the air-conditioning will be just as good in the summer
Just round the corner from West Ham's old Boleyn ground in a well-lit area, served by lots of buses and nearby Upton Park Station, it's open till 11pm every night - not sure about Sunday - and best of all, there's not a burger or kebab in sight - a refreshing change for the area!

First visit, pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and great service. Ordered the fiery fish and chips also regular cod and chips. The food took about 10-15 minutes to be served. The food was nicely presented and was fresh. Chips were perfect, very crisp. The fiery fish was crispy and fresh. The fiery flavour was a tandoori style masala, it looked great tasted nice but didn't have the fire which I was after. The regular cod was perfect, crisp all around, no soggy bits and the fish was clean and tasted perfect. One star lost to the lack of spice in the fiery fish also a can of coke is £1.25!! which is a massive bump for the area the shop is based.
Definitely recommend you to try.

One of the best fish and chips we had!
The battered sausages and curry sauce was unique and was very tasty!
Portions were big too!
D. D.
We bought the super large jumbo fish and chips served in large pizza type box it was really tasty at around £17.50 this portion is more then enough for 2 people also shop is very nice and clean, the staff are very nice and are pleased to serve you with a smile.

It looks like the McDonald's of Fish& Chips (uniforms, videos on big screens, pre-prepared food) but with better standards. Good value at £7.45, even the standard meal - drink is not included - is pretty big. Batter is great, fish is not bad. Self-service for drinks, go grab yours from the fridge while you wait for your order. Table service if you eat-in. Downsides: quite greasy food, wait can be longer for larger orders and CASH ONLY.

Having heard a lot about this place I was eagerly looking forward to trying it out. It is a nicely lit busy setting with lots of people working behind the scenes, ample salt and vinegar on all the tables. The workers require a bit more training in my opinion as the lady behind the counter struggled to understand my order, despite me pointing to it on the printed menu leaflet. We got there eventually and I got my order without waiting too long.
I went for cheese and onion with chips. It was a generous helping of chips. The chips were crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, good signs but they were very very thick and so tasted very plain despite lashings of salt and vinegar. My pie was very good but about 15% of it was burnt from the inside, perhaps from being on the warmer for a few days, I don't know, but that was a bit of a let down.
Overall it was nothing special but £3.65 for a sit down pie and chips is decent value in this day and age. I think if they made their chips slightly less thick they could take on more flavour, and if they had a broader selection of condiments, some kind of chilli sauce and some pepper, that would help push this place up.

AMAZING 🤩 VERY TASTY 😋 FISH 🐟 & CHIPS 🍟 10/10. HIGHLY 💯% DEFINITELY RECOMMENDATION, THE CHIPS 🍟 IS SLIGHTLY TOO THICK. BUT EVERYTHING IS BANG ON PERFECT 👌🏼 WILL COME AGAIN

I have visited other Mother Hubbard's up north and I can safely say that this did not dissapoint. Fresh fish in a tasty batter. Perfectly fried chips. Loved the Onion rings. Big Thanks
W. I.
Our 4th visit .Each time we have gone the service and food have been steady and same .Portion sizes are fine.Fish is well cooked nice meaty texture chips are good not greasy. One problem we have is their cutlery should be better the plastic is too soft even for F&C. Today's visit food was good but for some strange reason they were playing Indian music which did not suit the atmosphere? RADIO. Would be better if they need extra sound in the shop? Also mushy peas were very dark and runny not their norm?

Excellent food with excellent service. I have been looking for a Halal fish and chips for years. Now finally I have found one. The food is delicious and the place is spotless. Staff are smiling and only too happy to help. Fish is very good.

Once the rush of the opening week died down, my partner and I decided to give this a try. Caveat though, it is deceptive as to how busy it is if you look inside. They have an ordering system where people can go about their business with a device which buzzes when their order is ready. They also take orders over the phone. So you could be waiting up to 30 minutes for your order to be ready. However, it is definitely worth the wait.
Whilst this is a franchise, they use some fantastic suppliers of Icelandic Haddock and frying oil. I usually detest batter on fish, but this was not only cooked to perfection, but tasted exquisite. The chunky chips also were delicious. Staff seem friendly enough, however caveat number 2, as of now they don't have the tils properly configured so it's cash payments only.
They have quite an extensive menu for a fish and chip shop and if you want traditional tasting food, then this is the place to get it from despite there being numerous eateries in close proximity.
Highly recommended. Will be going back to sample more of their menu.

Best fish and chips I’ve ever had. I cannot eat fish and chips from anywhere else after having mother hubbards. The crispy batter fried to perfection and the taste is immaculate 10/10 from me
a.
I haven't even eaten at this branch yet but I know mother Hubbard's will take over London, they are in the top ten for fish and chips in the uk definitely recommend 10/10
Z. C.
Best fish and chips in the area! The staff from
Bradford are there for the opening and are really nice people.
I think a lot but not ALL the bad reviews are friends of the fish and chips shop a few shops down.
On opening day they gave out first 1000 fish and chips for 45p and the ques were still really long so they carried on selling fish and chips for 45p until they run out , hence why they closed early.
In conclusion Lovely fish and chips not too oily and really crispy.
Really nice gesture on opening day!
V. W.
Very nice battered haddock. Chips are lovely, but they're overpriced for the portion you get. £5 for a large portion, that'd barely be a small portion in other places nearby.
Whilst the haddock is good, i find the lack of choice of fish really odd. No plaice, skate, rock etc.
L. M.
Great comfort food. I love the selection they offer on their menu.
Fish and chips isn't too oily and are always well cooked and seasoned.
Only thing to improve is to take card payments and improve their curry sauce! Sometimes it looks like barbeque sauce and tastes watered down.
M. D.
Very tasty and fresh food. Clean store, staff friendly. Just in the beginning, the large portion of fish was huge like, literally huge. But now it shrunk a bit and there's no big difference between the special( large one) and normal portion. Overall, I recommend this place as the food is good and fresh.
H. N.
Really nice fish and I ordered the battered chips was fantastic and nice and fresh.
K. F.
fish is 10 out of 10 best fish.
however chips were to big need to be cut smaller
S. M.
First time trying this so called "famous chip shop". First irritation: the prices at the shop for the standard fish & chip was £7.45 not the online menu price of £5.95. Second, it was CASH ONLY.
While the portion of fish wasn't too bad - taste or size wise - the chips in my opinion were too fat and lacked any flavour. To my suprise they didn't do a staple diet of any fish & chips shop - the Cod Roe!
All -in-all not a great experience or value for money.
L. 8.
This is top quality fish and chips best I ever had, good price I paid 45p it grand opening.
G.
Lovely fish and chips, freshly made. I found the curry sauce quite salty but otherwise ok. Good service especially from Nishita who was happy to help, efficient and friendly, serving with a smile. Always makes your earing experience so much better. 😊
T. R.
My first time at this place. It's clean and has a fresh feel to it.
I was pleased to learn they fry their chips in separate oil to their fish and chicken.
I bought two portions of chips which were delicious. I was however disappointed with the portion size.
C. N.
I enjoyed the food from here. The batter on the fish was delicious, the chips were cooked to perfection! The keema pasty didn’t live up to my expectations, there wasn’t much filling inside and it lacked flavour.
I’d definitely return to try the rest of the items on the menu! The menu was reasonably and well priced.
Make sure to take cash as they don’t accept card.
S. P.
The best fish and chips in East London. I live in Romford but this is now my third time I've been there in 6 weeks. Very friendly staff. Cooked to order fish so perfect. Good in house dining facilities and very clean.
G. S.
Excellent crispy fish and fat chips. Good portion size. Excellent staff. Batter on fish so crispy. We sat there and enjoyed our meal. Masala Fish was great too.
M. 0.
Love their food lucky I've got them right next to me but besides the food the service from the brother Billy is always immaculate. So humble and kind and it goes towards everyone. His defo an asset there and always a pleasure to be dealt by him. Food is on point tho and they do accept card payments!
A. M.
Some of the best fish I've ever had - light, fluffy and crispy at the same time. Let down by the chips which are like big lumps of half cooked potato, swimming in grease.
D. A.
Proper Northern fish and chips. Fresh fish fried to perfection in crispy batter. Fat golden chips. Love it!!!
I. A.
Amazing fish n chips.
It's the best quality fish I've had in ages.
Been a couple of times at this new branch now, can't wait to go again soon.
U. A.
The chips are really nice with the traditional taste.
Most negative reviews are from people salty about the launch day.
Newham we have to do better than that. Just because you were not able to get 45p fish and chips it's not grounds for a new shop to get a one star rating.
G. N.
Keep returning just to have the battered fish, I don't have the chips (I only like battered chips which they don't have). They need to keep an eye on the oil and change it frequently, sometimes there seems to be burnt taste to fish which is due to the oil not being changed. p.s. they need to change 'cash only' policy, I pay everything with google pay. With the huge numbers of customers and cash only policy... Inland Revenue will soon come calling
F. M.
Best fish and chips I’ve had for some time. Portion for regular fish and chips pretty big. Only waited 10 mins for fresh food (7 meals). Definitely will be going again.
A. A.
Spicy Fish has really good flavour. The regular fish and chips were also delicious. Wasn't impressed with the Sausage but will be visiting again.
B. G.
To sum this place up in three words: overrated overhyped average.
To be fair it is the best fish and chips in the area currently beating the nearby Ercan, but can't say for certain that it is better than Queens market fish and chips will have to go back there and decide.
The fish here is decent very nice batter and nice flaky fish. However quite tasteless probably because it is a low quality fish. At time it was like chewing melted styrofoam.
The chips are definitely the best in the area no fish and chips can compare but only better by a few points mainly because the chips are fresh and barely any oily or greasy.
DO NOT get the onion rings, they were so oily there was even a puddle of oil inside my box it was so nauseating to eat but I had to try it for my review. It definitely did not go down well. It was like biting into a snail shell. Very crunchy and the inside is gooey because of all the oil.
Scampi was nothing special and below average, definitely bad quality scampi as it misses that soury zingy fishy scampi taste.
Tartar sauce they sell is terrible so best stay clear of that!
I.
Amazing fish. Made fresh each time, on order. Clean place. Plenty of seating. Nice, friendly staff.
F. K.
Immaculate place, good size venue, large menu, great fish and chips. Looking forward to trying other things in menu. Delicious food needed a good fish and chips joint in East London.
S. A.
Very good experience with friendly staff and awesome haddock & chips
A. H.
Food was tasty service very good but for me personally the fish could have been bigger as in chunky as I opted for the large special
P. T.
The best fish and chips in East London. Cooked fresh - my cod was cooked perfectly and the batter was crisp and light.
h. m.
Excellent place for your traditional fish and chips very tasty staff always helpful recommend going again
S. R.

B. T.
Cooked fresh to order. Great fish with crispy batter, super hot chips, nice mushy peas but awful cup of tea.
F. H.
Very large portion hope you're hungry. Quality fish. Also chip shop chips with the curry sauce hit the spot.
H. p.
Clean and nice food, the service is good
W. C.
I love this place best fish and chips in town.
Amazing sizes and so fresh couldn't wish for a better place to eat with my family. AMAZING
H. K.
Decent fish but no clear signs indicating this is CASH ONLY. Pretty ironic considering they’re a franchise and clearly have invested in their store interior with digital menu boards. The service wasn’t great either.
J. m.
Have been buy from their branches up north for years, and safe to say it still hits the spot! Fantastic fish and chips
V. A.

Avoiding this place as they saw another patron attacked a man and didn’t do anything. Person attacking said they are family of the owners. I will be avoiding this place like the plague. Spreading false and slanderous lies. Disgusting.
P. R.
