Reviews of Oldroyd

It is the most unlikely of restaurant. A small space tastefully done up to feel like a wood cabin. A even smaller kitchen producing spectacular food. The ingredients scream quality. The food is nuanced and cooked with car. The lunch menu is excellent value for money. And a big thank you for the waitress and chef, who really made sure that the food was gluten allergy. A brilliant place if you have food preferences, restrictions or allergies.

Fantastic little place, all of the food was cooked incredibly well. We visited on meat free Monday and found all of the dishes (bread, potatoes in aioli, artichoke and leek, mushroom tagliatelle and spiced cauliflower) all fantastic. Finished off with honeycomb mousse. Two full up and satisfied customers. Highly recommend and very good value for money!

The menu is creative and shows a lot of effort put in. The menu changes quite often so you're unlikely to try anything you see in the pictures. We loved the grilled baby gem and smoked eel. The skate wing in brown butter was tasty, but perhaps a tad too oily. It needed something sour to cut through the oil. The steak was good as well, but could be more tender.

I highly recommend this gem of a place. It's in a great location on Upper Street, just a couple of mins from Angel Station. It's a very unassuming looking place, I've lived in the area for a couple of years and never noticed it. It's a clean and minimal setting but the food is truly excellent. The menu isn't big and is designed to share so you can taste lots of things. I believe the menu changes frequently but if the croquettas are an option when you go, get them!
R. R.
Very very underwhelming experience, especially for the price we paid. The food was presented in such an underwhelming manner, I didn’t even feel like touching some of it. Taste wise I can see the chef trying to be experimental and innovative with styles but they too felt flat. The only redeeming dish was the stuffed pasta. I’d skip this place honestly.

Really small place with unexpectedly good food. We ve been there for a quick monday lunch and found their meat free 10 pounds lunch offer.
We ordered:
Starter(5£extra)
- peas and mint croquettes with (probably homemade)mayo :3/5
( good tasting and smooth texture, show of technique but very small portion )
Mains
-peach,raw and roasted zucchini, peashoots , grated almonds, light basil pesto and sour cheese sauce : 5/5
( portion was small too but very nice balance, this dish tells a story, if i wanted to be really critical i would say it just needed the zucchini to be roasted on a harder flame to retain same texture but deeper roasting and some maldon salt on top)
-tagliatelle with parmesan/garlic sauce, roasted leeks, parsley 4/5
(Again nice taste, not as eclectic as the peach dish but equally satisfying ,very rich sauce, to raise criticism level i would cook the tagliatelle one minute less)
The lunch was too brief to evaluate floor service
we will definitely be coming again :)

Delicious food, looks fresh, well dressed, fair portions. The place is small or cosy, you decide. Good service. I loved it.

A few choices of starters and mains, only one dessert, but everything is fresh and beautifully cooked. Nice service.
R. D.
Great little place in Angel, small but tasty menu mainly composed of modern British and European dishes. Cozy though you end up sitting very close to your neighbours. Nice to be able to see the chef's cooking. Lentils and croquettes are great for starters. The malfatti for main have a bit too much spinach and could be smoother. The Babette steak is good. Overall good quality for adequate price.
K. N.
Very delicious and creative food, a gem for the neighborhood. For the price and ambience, would prefer slightly larger portions. More suitable for couples, small groups rather than big parties.
A. L.
Delicious food! Had a great lunch there and would definitely come back.
E. U.
Fresh ingredients and super tasty dishes. Had wild mushroom croquettes with truffle aioli for starter - highly recommend! The squid ink risotto was one of the best I tried in a while. Courgette fries is another must (when available as they do have a seasonal menu)
S. F.
Had a gorgeous veggie tasting menu here, the food is incredible! Lovely staff and great service, too.
D. F.
Absolutely fantastic! Delicious food. Delight staff. Great place to sit and watch the Angel go by. Recommend very highly.
A. V.
Perfect every time I go for dinner.
Nice and seasonal menu, curated in every single detail.
The desserts are always a favourite, but the croquettes are a must.
If you're reading this and wondering if going, order some!
They also do meat free Mondays with a very good veggie menu.
Also great service from the staff, friendly and professional.
Best restaurant in Angel
L. H.
Disappointed.
We went for lunch on Monday. Starters very small and underwhelming. Small is fine if backed up by taste but the carrots had very little taste and the 2 small croquettes lacked subtlety. The mains were slightly better but still nothing very special. On that basis, the lunch menu is bad value for money and does not promote coming back for the full menu.
What also put a soured note was the 3.5£ for a small carafe (not branded bottle) of sparkling water. Same price as a full branded bottled water in some stared restaurants.
Came for something different but unfortunately found a standard new restaurant focused more on hype than cuisine.
Service was good however.
T. K.
Delightful and tasty food, but the portion size on the "£10 lunch" was not sufficient. No way that could fill you up: 3 delicate and lovely slices of pork, 2 slices of tomato and an anchovy couldn't feed a 2 year old. Very tasty but needs either to come with some gratin or similar or not be called a £10 lunch, cos it ain't lunch for a tenner.
Food top quality, and place is lovely though.
B. T.
Tried the Ala carte menu on the weekend. Quality is good but portions are way too small, not worth the price. Some dishes are creative but do not taste that good (the purple vegetables with the trout was way too bitter). Perhaps the set lunch on weekdays is better value but probably will not try again.
C. C.
Really fun restaurant with some great tapas food options and an awesome lunchtime set menu. The service is fast and friendly and the atmosphere is really chilled. The drinks are good but some of the wines are a bit pricey, thankfully there is a good selection so it doesn't matter.
My one complaint is the temperature! This restaurant has no air con and as a result it gets unbelievably hot in the summer. I mean like sauna temperatures! Eater beware!
A. M.
Very very good food, unusual, small British eats, a foodies heaven. I was so excited, that as there were five of us we had the whole menu and it was all very good. Perhaps, a little too salty here and there but overall delicious. The service was perfect and deserves five stars, I am not a huge anchovy fan and after explaining this, they kindly subbed it for a delicious wild garlic sauce. The restaurant was cozy, the wine was exquisite. All in all the evening is around £40 per head, mid range value, but worth it. However, I don't know if I recommend it to big groups of people, of course, the food is amazing although the way it was presented meant it was quite hard to share especially when there are five people on a small table, we ordered the entire menu and I still came out feeling not hugely satisfactorily full. Saying this, If you are in the area on a date to impress, this is worth it.
R. W.
Great food, really good value and very nice staff. The wild mushroom croquettes are amazing, we had a venison dish and a squid ink risotto with grilled squid which were also really good. It's small so best suited to 4 or less people. No complaints at all.
S. D.
This is a lovely little place very close to Angel Station.
Staff has been very polite and helpful. If you have any intolerance, just talk to them, and they will ask the chef to mark which dishes you can eat!
I tried a fixed menu for lunch , starter (bread/meat) plus main (gnocchi), for £16 + £2 service charge. Both dishes were delicious.
The starter is small, so not recommended as a meal.
K. K.
Absolutely adore this place! It was some of the best Italian-inspired food we've had in London. We're serious Italian food lovers too (visiting Italy a few times a year) so we have a lot to compare the experience to! We especially loved their Umbrian style truffle pasta and seafood risotto. Also, the wine is delicious and the service is impeccable! Highly recommend to anyone wanting an authentic tapas style Italian feast :)
K. M.
The best meal I’ve had in London. They were able to seat us at the bar without reservations. The staff could have been nicer. There was not a single misstep in the menu. I loved everything I ate.
C. W.
The set lunch is a tremendous steal for the quality of the menu.
I had a duck liver parfait on toast with red onion compote for a starter and the sea bream over fennel and blood orange on my last visit. Wonderful with a glass of white.
The service is intimate in a good way. There's one person serving the upstairs room. Downsides are the room itself. Our table wasn't quite 2 feet square and we shared a corner dining with one another. Great with your girlfriend. Awkward for your business meeting. Another downside is that the toilet is behind a closet door upstairs, so you have a fellow diners coming up through the upstairs room for a slash while you're eating.
R. H.
If I could give this 6 stars I would. It is tiny but perfect.
The set lunch menu is a bargain. The veggie options were fantastic and I reckon some of the best food I've eaten recently. Staff are v welcoming, and even the background music is great! Loved it :)
N. T.
Really enjoyed my meal here. The atmosphere was great upstairs, very small so you are sat very close to the other tables, but if you're into that kind of cosyness, which I am, you will like this, it's cosy. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. Simple decor and relaxed.
The food was overall delicious, and definitely something new for the taste buds. The spinach & ricotta main would have been better hot (assuming that it not being hot was intentional). Howevr the croquette starter (I would order 2 plates) and cheesy gnocchi special were particularly delicious. I'd say for 2 people ideally order 2 smalls, 1 medium and 2 large plates, more if you are hungry.
I'm knocking off a star because you really do not get a lot of food for the price. I understand the small-plate thing is intentional by many good chefs as it forces you to really savour each bite of the food, which we did. But it's hard to ignore that natural reaction of 'that's a small plate' when a £14 main arrives. £14 for 5 tortellinis is expensive, regardless of how nice they are.
A. N.
Simple and fresh food, well prepared with a great taste. Wandered in with my girlfriend and had a very nice and cozy meal. Staff are very friendly, helpful and chill. Will come back again as it looks like they rotate their menu often.
Z. D.
NOT A BRUNCH PLACE, I know that's a weird way to start but this place seriously looked so much like a kind of chilled place for eggs and avocado or something similar, and a few people have comment to me it looks like it would be a good brunch place. When we went in, it's not that at all! Its like fine dining, which was delicious! But not at all what we wanted... I feel the image of the place is a bit off, but for a sophisticated dinner it would be really nice. The service was great, and the price is not cheap but equally not expensive. I probably wouldn't go again, but it was really quite good.
F. L. G.
You won't find much better food in Angel for this price. Staff are VERY friendly and make you feel at home. The idea is to pick small, varied dishes and share together which allows you to experience genuinely different plates and flavours. Everything from the starters to desserts looks appetising thus i've returned three times already and have always had a great experience. Lovely for a meal with friends or a date.
K. N.
Angel's best kept secret! The food and wine is always excellent and we love the intimate and welcoming vibe. We always ask for menu recommendations and are never disappointed. Book a table downstairs if you can so you can watch the chefs work their magic!
T. G.
A small plate sharing restaurant. A very good selection of meat, fish and vegetarian choices to suit all tastes.
The plates at the beginning of the menu are a bit like starters and those nearer the end more like mains.
They recommend each person choses one or two from the beginning and one from towards the end.
All very tasty. Excellent service. Very friendly staff.
A. A.
Very good selection of small dishes.
S. B.
Food was delicious - crisply fried artichoke with aïoli, porchetta, roasted beetroot all beautifully prepared. Intimate ambience. I think some upgrading of the loo wouldn't go amiss, but that's my only criticism!
R. C.
Was not blown away by the quality of food. Slightly overcooked. They are going for the boutique style restaurant and the only meat selection was fish, pork or bird (mallard). Overall food experience was average but with good service.
M. D.
Thoroughly enjoyed my night here. Good food and wine, however, didn't find that the flavours doesn't quite match others in the price range and style like Popolo in shoreditch. Could also just be the dishes I ordered on the night
S. J.
Great food. The zucchini fries is to die for. You get to order a number of small dishes to delight your palette.
Small, intimate venue albeit a little cramped, but it adds to the rustic atmosphere.
R. S.
Went there 530pm Sat eve as we were seeing a play at 730 and the menu looked good . Didn’t disappoint on any level. Delicious fried mackerel with a sweet berry base (it worked) . Service drinks etc all top Impressed.
D. S.
6 of us attended following the good reviews. Front of house were REALLY kind, welcoming and helpful... but the food was a disappointment with everyone sharing the same opinion. No flavours stood out apart from the fish plates that were unfortunately overly fishy.
Maybe we were just unlucky.
M. L.
I've only been for brunch in this tiny restaurant but that was enough to get me to make reservations again. The bacon and egg pasta is so good - a fancy carbonara but the crispy bits of bacon are what really put it over the top. The little corner tables upstairs are my favorite.
A. J.
Went here for a Christmas menu and truly impressed. It's a tiny restaurant that easily passes you by but the food is truly delicious. Would come back here in a heartbeat!
C. C.
Lovely small dishes with very fresh ingredients. Restaurant has a first floor but overall space is very limited; book in advance and would recommend keeping party size to 4 or less.
C. G.
I love this little place! Small plates which are great to share - unique dishes! Great buzz about it - always super busy for dinner. Staff are lovely and really helpful.
Q. W.
Superb. Excellent food for all tastes, order a couple of dishes and share! Tasted a couple of things that were all delicious! Very nice setting and staff too
J. M.
The best restaurant in Islington at the moment by far.
It's small, which is part of the charm, so you will struggle as a walk-in/last minute, definitely book.
The lunch menu is incredibly good value together with excellent service and creative, quality food - you cannot find better.
Guys, you've knocked Trullo and Drapers off the top spot to eat in Islington for me.
A. H.
Really nice (if very small) restaurant in Islington. Really good food and pleasant service. It is very small however and even when not busy you're constantly squeezing round people of being bumped into. Hopefully they can find bigger premises soon
M. Z.
Very friendly staff. Very good food. Small restaurant but that's fine. Won some cool awards that can be seen on the door.
S. G.
Best restaurant in N1, the food is always on point and seasonal.
The service is second to none. Often pop in for their lunch special and Fabrizio is always welcoming and truly charming.
R. H.
Very quaint establishment with good food. Definitely worth a visit.
S. D.
Downstairs is a bit too tight for my liking, and the staff squeezing past you gets old quickly. The menu is refreshing however portion sizes are small so one dish my not satiate you fully.
P. K.
My latest discovery in Islington, have been there 4 x over last month. Amazing atmosphere, top quality food and nice people. Will be definitely coming back frequently.
R. V.
Great service and outstanding food. Only downside is if you're sitting downstairs it could be cold by the door. Ask for seats upstairs! Very cute.
V. C.
While there were a couple of issues with our starters, the large plates were fantastic overall. It's definitely a nice addition to the area, so stop by and order a bunch of plates (especially the tagliarini and pork!).
M. R.
Seriously £10 for lunch! A bargain, a steal. A total no brainer. Lovely food. Try it. A small but perfectly formed restaurant.
G. B.
Sharing plates at a very London price. Some dishes were great. Really nice atmosphere if a bit stuffy in the summer months
J. F.
Had dinner there last night. The food was wonderful, the atmosphere cosy and warm and the staff super friendly. Will definitely return.
A. M.
Cosy, friendly and relaxed. The food was freshly made, very tasty and came quickly after we ordered. The staff was very pleasant.

W. D.
Amazing food, great staff and a very relaxed and informal atmosphere. The pea croquettes with truffle were out of this world!!!
T. M.
Great food at a pretty reasonable price. Bit tight for space for our table of 5 but aside from that no complaints at all
A. B.
wine superbly chosen and complimentary to the beautiful food, great atmosphere. been 3 times always leave impressed.
H. B.
Great food and really friendly and helpful staff. Were sat at the bar and got a lot of help from the girl at the bar with wine and what was good in the menu.
C. B.
Truly delightful food, service and drinks and extremely reasonably priced. Had a thoroughly enjoyable evening and have been recommending to everyone.
E. K.
Good value. Small but pretty much perfectly formed restaurant. Fill up on mains as the desserts were a little disappointing.
O. G.
Been there three times for lunch. Food is good, not excellent, but the service was very very slow. It took more than 1.5hrs to wait to be served 2 plates and espresso.
D. B.
Simple lunch menus, both unusual.and very enjoyable. Good value for the heart of Islington
C. M.
Had high polpo hopes for the food, but nothing mind blowing. And the lamb neck we had on the night was over chewy. Nice cosy setting and service though.
L. C.
My favourite place in London. Tapas style with daily changing menu so there's always something new. Never disappointed.
A. T.
We had a super great lunch here. Good for small groups ideally as the place is a bit 'pokey' but great

(Translated) It happened to be meatless Monday. The gnocchi with artichoke cream and the spinach ricotta malfatti were super delicious, and the dark chocolate pistachio tart was also great. Also worthy of praise is the soft drink ~ earl and elderflower iced tea are equivalent Delicious! Must find time to eat again~
very delicious and nice service, will come back again definitely!
