Reviews of Orford’s Fish & Chips
L. d. M.
Will start by saying I'm not British, but I live in London for 12 years and have been to many fish and chips places. Some really nice, some not so much.
I find this one very nice, fish taste quite fresh and and chips are delicious! The batter is crispy I recommend as a good quality tasty food. I've been recommended this place by a British person that lives in the area and now we come here quite often on weekends.
Portions are generous and we share 1 chips for 2.
Tartar sauce comes in a Heinz package and it's 50p each. It's not great as I prefer fresh sauce, but still does not put me off as the fish is delicious.
They also don't mind if you to buy buy drinks nearby so that is a plus as the E17 shop across the street has a great selection of craft beer, juices and drinks.

I was recommended this place as really good British Fish n Chips. Coming from New Zealand I was up for the experience. I expected to be disappointed as having lived in UK for 4 years, I had never had what I call good fish n chips.
I just ordered one piece of cod (9.50pounds) which huge - equivalent to 2 portions back home. The batter was perfect & I was impressed that despite adding vinegar it stayed crispy. Fish was moist, fresh and really delicious. There was no way I could have eaten chips but what I saw looked great.
The place & the fat used was exceptionally clean. It was nice there were clean tables to sit at inside & out.
I would give 5 stars if the was no skin on fish and if I had tried more that was on offer but super impressed.
Post note: I have upgraded my review to 5 stars due to the quick & helpful response from the owner.

This is by far the best fish and chip shop in London. The food was so tasty and piping hot. The price is decent and the portion was very generous. I am a very happy customer 😊

I've been a few times and the haddock is very fresh and tasty (slight quibble is that last time I went they had left the skin on which I'm not a fan of). Chips are good but slightly dry - although the mushy peas do the job on this. They cook to order, which helps - although it would be great if you could phone ahead for collection. Not cheap by any means but all round definitely one of the better fish shops in London.

The best fish and chips locally but then the competition is pretty awful.
New to E17 Orfords Fish and chips are situated in trendy Orford Road. They have clearly gone to some trouble to market their wares to the young local clientele.
The positives are crispy batter without the uncooked sludge so often to be found lurking under the surface. The portion size is generous with decent sized portions of fish and portions of chips which will readily feed two people
The downside to this is the fish - whilst crispy coated - was overcooked and was therefore fairly dry. The other problem was the oil used had given both batter and chips a slightly unpleasant aftertaste.
If these criticisms were to be overcome the end product would improve no end. However given the rather captive audience I doubt the incentive to do so will prevail.

This is the place to use if you have a big order. Don't know how they do it but they turned up with 80 meals freshly cooked and piping hot. Every one adored their meals thank you so much.

Great tasting fish and chips plus battered sausage. Batter on the fish and sausage was just about right! Chips were perfect for me, soft and crispy. Good portions as well (shared between two people). Menu as of 25th November 2020.

Good grub, quite oily, was thrown off when I was asked to pay for ketchup and mayo, a small sachet at 60p each which is ridiculous. Condiments at a chippy should be complimentary and free, especially basics like ketchup and mayo.

Really great place, good quality, crispy, perfectly battered fish, just the right level of crunch. Nice crispy freshly cooked chips.very enjoyable meal, will deffo be visiting again 😊

This place got off to a bit off to a bit of a bad start – soggy fish in greasy batter, chips not quite cooked through, limp squid…..blanks looks when (as a northerner) I asked for scraps!
But as time gone on they have redeemed themselves and their delivery, process and food has got better. I still go and collect rather than get a delivery, as the service takes a while, and the food seems to be fresher when you pick it up. Thankfully they seem to be on top of things and have sorted out the teething problems when they opened. A decent addition to the road.

The restaurant is very modern-looking and extremely clean. The staff were polite and the food was cooked to order. The haddock was so tasty and the chips were perfect. I echo the other reviews... definitely the best fish and chips in Walthamstow and the surrounding area. Excellent first experience, highly recommend and will be returning.

Best fish & chips I've had in London. Cracking chips, thin batter which isn't too greasy, fish cooked to perfection and a generous portion. Big fan of the curry sauce too. The staff were friendly and chatty, despite it clearly being a really busy night. Definitely going back!

Fabulous fish and chips. Nicely cooked fish and perfect chips. They’re understandably always busy and it’s well worth the short wait.

We came across this lovely fish and chip shop on an evening stroll, it seemed nice and quiet and looked clean and well presented from the outside.
We decided to try on a Friday night, the wait was around 25-30 minutes and was busy outside- which must mean it’s a popular choice!
What we ordered: Fish and chips, mushy peas and curry sauce.
Portion: Good and enough to share.
Taste: Yummy! Fresh and lightly battered fish. With a tasty home made curry sauce!
Cost: around £15.00s
Would we go back? Yes one of the best fish and chips shops in Walthamstow :)

This is a nice place, very clean and modern but retro. You can sit outside and watch the world go by on fashionable middle class Orford Road, which is a USP of sorts. The food is good but noticeably dearer and no better than other local chippies, like Bonners or Wood Street.

Busy fish and chip shop providing most of the classics - cod, haddock, fish cakes, mushy peas and pickled eggs. I didn't notice any cod's roe, but they do calamari and some burgers and pies.
Portions are big (especially the chips) and the fish is ok, though sometimes a little dry. They are just doing takeaways and outside dining at moment, which is probably best - the interior is clean and efficient, almost clinical. That, plus the ebb and flow of takeaway trade might not make it the most relaxing venue on Orford Road. Plus I don't think they're licensed...
Prices are on the high side, but they are in the village. And you can take advantage of their one for two deal - one large fish and chips feeds two people, if you add the mushy peas.
M. M.
Big portions. Thought there may be a bigger variety of fish, e.g. skate, especially as it's in the Village!
A. R.
I am not a Fish and chips huge fan so when I go for it, it better be good and it surely was... A huge piece of cod with delicious thin batter and a very generous portion of large fries that we ate on a bench near by! Nice staff as well! Very good valu for money !
L. H.
Great fish and chip shop - lovely chunky, tender cod, and non-greasy and light but crispy batter. The chips were perfect. Mushy peas were delicious. The curry sauce was slightly unusual - in-between katsu curry sauce and normal chip shop curry sauce - more fruity. Didn't mind it though - very tasty.

Finally got to try our new local chippy today. All good. Cod and chips, battered saveloy and chips. Chips great, fish good, saveloy good. Got free mushy peas as our order got 'lost', top marks for customer service (the peas were bland though...). Not the best we have had (Aldeburgh Fish & Chip shop). But a very welcome addition. Will obviously be back for more. Peace.
E. S.
Best chips I have ever had and their vegan pies are great too.
H. R.
Quite pricey but can't find fault so can only give 5 stars. I've struggled to find decent fish and chip shops in London so this is a nice addition so close by. Chips were excellent, fish was very good though I prefer my batter a bit crispier
H. P.
Perfect chip shop chips - crispy and fluffy at the same time - and delicious fresh fish with crispy batter. Also very good sized portions! Couldn't have hoped for better fish and chips in the Stow!
T. C.
Best fish and chips in walthamstow, we always buy take away and it takes us 15 minutes to get it home. Always fresh and delish even after out travel well done guys.
G. V.
Not amazing, especially for the price. £11.50 for cod & chips. I went in the first week of opening. They were very unprepared, a 25 minute wait. They ran out of calamari and didn't put a notice up for customers. I've had better fish and chips in E17.
R. H.
It's great to have a fish and chip shop in Walthamstow Village - the ones in Wood Street, Leyton and Higham Hill are all good, but just a little too far away for it to be hot when you get it home.
I went on the second night they were open, and there was a short queue to order and 20 minute wait after ordering. Combined with them being out of a few things because they had been so busy, I thought that I'd be giving them a 3 or 4 star review with a note that I'd re-review later when things had calmed down a bit.
Then I tried the food and knew it had to be 5 stars. Portions are generous, with an order of chips easily feeding two people. The chips are exactly the chip shop chips of your dreams - thick but not doorstops with solid outsides and fluffy insides. The fish was huge, and the batter was crispy and airy, without a hint of sogginess or greasiness. I'm looking forward to coming back many more times.

The best fish and chips that I can remember eating. My partner and I picked ours up at around 6:30 on opening night and ate them on the walk home. The food was hot, fish very tender and tasty, with fantastically seasoned batter. The chips were perfect chip shop chips - a slight crunch on the outside but light and fluffy on the inside. The batter even held up all the way from the Village down to Lloyd Park, which is a real achievement. Walthamstow has several decent chippies, but this is now very much at the top of our list and while it only opened less than a week ago, it's been quite hard to resist going back for seconds. After maybe going a bit too far into the land of regular weekly takeaways in order to get us through the first lockdown, we've now trimmed our rotation to a monthly order from either Gokyuzu, Green Grill, Tiffin Tin, Italian Bakery, and now Orford's. I'm only really writing such a long review in order to keep me from putting my coat on and walking up there now.

Best fish and chips in Walthamstow and best fish and chips I have had to date. Batter is crisp to perfection and not greasy and the curry sauce is AMAZING!!!
Highly recommend.

At long last, a good chippy in walthamstow. Tasty chips, flavoursome fish, rich mushy peas, all coming in a well-sized portion. Not cheap, granted. But the quality speaks for itself

Had a fish chips at this place was told it’s cook to order so first impressions were good when I got the food was so tasty crispy batter and the curry sauce is amazing to highly recommended
S. M.
Very tasty. Fish seems fresh and full of flavour and the chips are properly cooked. Plus very nice staff
T.
Best fish and chips I've had all year!
Usually the chips play a supporting role but the chips are just as good as the fish
A. Z.
So amazing! I thoroughly enjoy ordering from here once a week and the staff are super efficient. It's a little pricey though, so it's a treat for sure
F. 9.
Fantastic fish and chips everytime
A. M.
Amazing chippy - just what the area needed! Food was fresh and so yummy. Portion sizes are on point and fair prices. Highly recommend!
C.
Nice enough but quite expensive, the chips are overpriced and not value for money. Still no rival to Bonners. Bonners is still no.1 for quality and value.
G. A.
Great fish and chips. I'd recommend the fish burger !! Absolutely yummy :) and the service is always friendly
L. H. L.

Worth the 10 min wait. Fish, chips and sausage all done really well. Coming back soon.
J. L.
So good! And great veggie options. And they threw in a piece of cheesecake - so thoughtful. Will order again.
r.
Friendly service, cod burger was very good and the chips cooked to perfection. Will be a regular here
J. D.
Sensational food ! Try to avoid 'fish n chips' due to being on a diet, but this is certainly going to be my go to when I am after a cheat day :)
T. L.
Food a bit disappointing - neither fish nor chips hot enough and only live 90 seconds away - am hoping this is just an opening week issue and things will settle down in due course
J. C.
Most succulent fish I’ve had in years. Wonderful!
H. M.
My new local chippy, just what the village needed.
